Instructor Notes
“It’s been said that leadership can’t be taught but it can be learned. Interesting concept … and not something I believe. Leadership, in my opinion, can be taught, and if there is a flame within that reaches out to lead, then most definitely there are skills, tools and competencies that can be taught to the willing. In my experience leadership learning must be relevant, practical and contain a balance of experiential practice and theory to be successful.”

Contracts are negotiated road maps that guide parties through all kinds of transactions enforced by law. They are complete private codes of rules, expectations, standards, deliverables and deadlines. The course will explore real life cases for a valuable overview of the law and practical management of contracts.
Course Outline & Objectives • Formation of legally-enforceable and binding contracts • When does a contract have to be in writing, and what is “writing”? • Standard-form contracts and how the law adjusts for imbalance in contract power • Negotiating the fine print • Practical legal remedies for breach of contract performance, including alternative dispute resolution methods

Economics of Trust
with Robert Porter Lynch Did you know that high trust organizations have a 25% competitive advantage over their low trust rivals? High trust companies run much more efficiently and have far greater levels of innovation that enable them to adapt to change more quickly. Every senior executive and financial professional knows the importance of increasing competitive advantage and profitability. Risk management is critical for success. Few realize that the biggest risk any leader can incur is having a work force that is not aligned, motivated, and focused on common goals. Distrust creates enormous resistance to change, stifling efforts to innovate when it’s needed the most. Every business leader and entrepreneur is seeking to create a competitive advantage. Some do it with great strategy, technology, marketing or speed. Regardless of the strategy you use to build your business, it can be accelerated by adding a good ‘chemistry’ - high trust.
Course Outline & Objectives • You will learn how trust is critically linked to innovation programs. • Successful implementation of LEAN Management. • Review evidence on how high trust companies generate more profit. • Review strategies, principles, policies, processes and programs high trust companies use to develop a competitive advantage.

Evaluation
In developing a customized executive education solution, our first priority is to understand your organization’s needs. We undertake a thorough needs assessment, engaging all stakeholders, in order to specify learning outcomes. This typically involves human resources from your organization, managers and directors of end users for whom the education is directed, our instructors, and members of our programming team. Our experience tells us that setting up this collaborative relationship at the start of planning means we can ultimately meet, and exceed, your expectations.
You are in good company Relationships are important to us. For over a quarter century we have been working with Canadian organizations to assist them in further enhancing the skills of their people and their organizational bottom lines.
24
Over this past year, and within an ever changing economic environment, we have continued working with Canadian organizations to find innovative and creative ways to ensure learning, discovery, and citizenship continue at world-class levels. We proudly remain a partner in helping private-sector and public sector organizations strengthen the capacity of their people, projects, and communities.
From our three locations in Alberta – Stollery Executive Development Centre, Enterprise Square, U of A Calgary Centre – and throughout northern and western Canada, we provide leadership and management development to some of Canada’s leading organizations. Locally, nationally and internationally, we have the resources to work with you in building your business.
Coaching & Consultative Services
Coaching A number of faculty and consultants provide insight in the area of coaching, whether this is individual or in group format. The ability to ask the ‘right’ questions through interpretive inquiry while encouraging an environment of trust, team collaboration, and accountability, are necessary qualities of a great coach. The end result is transformation, not only of the person being coached, but the organization as a whole.
Consultation When building a new course or program, our Executive Education team brings together a number of different stakeholders to ensure the final product is relevant, while still serving an educational gap in the business world. We collaborate with a number of advisory committees, management consultants, and expert faculty within the Alberta School of Business to ensure each program will be well aligned to meet, and surpass, organizational goals.

Many successful organizations recognize coaching as an essential tool to engage, develop and retain employees in a competitive environment. Leaders of tomorrow require a refined skill set to make time sensitive decisions with confidence, motivate their team, and exceed business targets. In a ‘coaching culture’ all team members support a respectful, candid discussion to move their objectives forward. Improvement of working relations between individuals and teams is essential to enhance productivity within a ‘high trust’ corporate culture. Through sharing best practices with our industry peer network, we have found a combination of coaching and consultative services, to guide and enhance these daily conversations, to be two of the most effective tools in advancing our next generation of leaders.

Master of
Financial Management
The Master of Financial Management (MFM) is designed for individuals who aspire to the role of Controller, Treasurer or Chief Financial Officer in for-profit private or public sector organizations. The MFM delivers the skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful financial management professional at all levels of an organization.
34
About the Program The Master of Financial Management (MFM) program is a 13 course program, exclusive to the Alberta School of Business. It is designed for individuals who aspire to the role of Controller, Treasurer or Chief Financial Officer in private or public sector organizations. The MFM delivers the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful at all levels of an organization. It provides both applied and conceptual knowledge, develops technical skills, and integrates and embeds them within a strategic focus. The MFM is aimed at the financial management function that enables organizations to successfully produce and market goods or services, rather than the investment industry itself. The program will complement the skills of individuals with a CFA or a professional accounting designation. Regardless of background, the MFM provides an opportunity for financial managers to fully develop their abilities, thereby enhancing prospects for success in leadership positions.
“Initially, I was intrigued by the practical curriculum of the MFM program that, in my opinion, would benefit finance professionals at every level of the organization. The weekend delivery method with a lineup of quality professors enhanced the learning experience. I would highly recommend this program to individuals looking to advance their careers in finance or simply looking to close technical gaps. I found the program to be challenging, rewarding and a great place to network. Terry Olexyn Current MFM Student
Why A Master of Financial Management? The MFM program is a specialized degree program. In each topic area, technical skills are taught from a strategic perspective, allowing you to make financial decisions within the context of organizational strategy; thus, the MFM program will assist on each step of your path to more and more senior financial management positions while providing the comprehensive understanding necessary for success.
Program Overview MFM students enjoy the benefits of learning from their fellow students as well as from the PhD professors through dynamic interaction in the classroom.

“As someone changing career paths, I found the executive format of the MFM program ideal for making a gradual transition into finance. The MFM program format allowed me to maintain full-time employment in my original field while accumulating quantitative training necessary for employment in finance. The small class sizes and condensed format of lectures provided me with the opportunity to build personalized relationships with my instructors. A valuable (and unexpected) outcome of being a part of the MFM program was the lasting professional networks that developed between myself and with my classmates. Not only do I feel better equipped to make finance related decisions, but I feel better connected to a collective of aspiring financial managers, controllers, treasurers and CFOs that I can call on in future.
