. Itis 'mYPleasureat this time to be able to wish each and everyone of you good hea lth in this festive season , and a happy and prosperous New Year. [t is 26 years since [ graduated from the Ontario Veterina ry College. For those of you who are recent alumni, you are well informed' Torn DeGeer, OVC '54. about the University of Guelph and all its outstanding activities. Those of us who are of the "old school" have found some almost unbelieva ble changes on campus. [f you a re a lready aware of these, [ certainly do not need to point out the differences to you. For those of you who have not been back a nd familiarized yourselves with our University, [ strongly urge you to do so. The opportunity to work with the University of Guelph Alumni Association is proving to be very interesting and refreshing. I hope that each and every one of you will take time to look thoroughly at this, our Guelph Alumnus Datelines '81 issue, a nd partake of as man y of the listed alumni functions as possible.
he past year was witness to a financial retrenching with respect to alumni publications. The result, a cost-saving amalgamation of college bulletins and the Guelph Alumnus, has received good acceptance fr om alumni at large who welcome the opportunity of receiving news about fellow graduates from sister colleges. May I offer my sincere John Babcock , OAC '54. thanks to the seven college a lumni associations involved and to the college editors for their valued co-operation and continued voluntary support. A lumni Weekend , Homecoming and some association annual meet ings were other activities th a t reflected change during 1980. To facilitate alumni participation , the focus of interest has been shifted to Alumni Weekend in June when weather conditions and avail a bility of overnight accommodation on campus are more favourable. To this end the Annual Meeting of the U.G .A.A. and several of the newer college alumni associations have-been switched to June. On behalf of m y staff and colleagues [ extend warm and sincere seasons greetings . Your continued participation and support of U niversity and alumni activities and programs are very-much appreciated.
Dr. Tom DeGeer, ove '54, President, . University of Guelph Alumni Associa t ion .

his dean, with nearly a decade of administrative exposure, has at least learned one thing-patience. In fact, the demonstration of exceptional patience has been a major factor in the history of the College of Biological Science. The College was spawned of experienced, but somewhat hesitant, parents. Nevertheless, the first three members declared themselves in a short time, having premeditated the future explosion of interest in basic and comparative biology. Later, other departments, after some natural soul-searching and independent decision-making, joined and the College became whole. We are to be ten years young on 81 01 01. Ten years: several lifetimes for some plants and animals, many, many generations for bacteria, but such a short space in the carved-in-stone practices of universities. In our College's life span, however, ten years has been very critical. Even in this short time, we have been able to build a substantial base for the future. In those ten years we have been associated with, and produced, many first-class students. Some came to us as first-class candidates, while others later grew into that category. Others had generalized interests and, perhaps, did not register high grades but learnt and taught us a lot. You left the C.B.S. at all levels; 6:semester B.Sc., 8-semester B.Sc. or B.Sc.(H .K.), M.Sc. or Ph.D. You are now spread across Canada, indeed across the world. You are either concentrated, as in the Maritimes, or isolated elsewhere, but usually very active and carrying out your trade or expanding your level of education . We recognize the initial leadership of Dr. R .C. Anderson from January till July of our inaugural year, when I assumed the deanship. Since then our faculty and support staff remain much the same as you remember them . Recognition must be given to our faculty members for their ability to change direction and still remain leaders in their fields. I am proud of the way all have responded to the changing responsibilities of modern education. We also recognize our support staffs ability to dedicate their lives to the C.B.S. 's teaching and research. This is not news to you, but I can inform you that the C.B.s. is still holding its own and, indeed, is generating new ideas and encouraging new people. The College of Biological Science is almost ten . What a magnificent ten! You are much a part of it. Be proud of it. We are proud of you and the College. Join us in our pride and rejoin us in our tenth year .
Professor K. Ronald , Dean, College of Biological Science.
our C.B.S. Anniversary Committee has been hard at work planning a wide array of activities to celebrate " Horizons 1981 ." Everyone has his own way of celebrating a birthday and , mindful of this, we've planned a means for each and everyone of you to participate. Beginning in January. climaxing at College Royal , and continuing into May, each event is clearly marked in the appropriate date boxes of this Guelph Alumnus Datelines issue. We invite you to attend the C.B.s. Anniversary Lecture Series featuring guest lecturers sponsored by the BiO'logical Science Student Council and by the five College departments . For those of you who are high school science teachers, a workshop planned for May 8 and 9 will demonstrate some new ideas to assist in teaching high school biology. College Royal Weekend in March marks the denouement of our celebration. A race into the future , in the form of the Dean 's Triscadecaphobia (fear of the 13th) Car RaJ!y, begins on the evening of Friday, March 13 . We are looking for individual and team entrants-very serious competitors need not apply' This will be a fun activity for everyone. The only equipment required is a pencil , a flashlight and a modest sense of humour. The fin al checkpoint for participants and friends will be the Duke of Grafton, located adjacent to the University in the Campus Estates . On the morning of Saturday, March 14, a foot relay begins from Toronto, with runners bringing in congrats from places along the route. You'll need track shoes but don't plan on using them for very long-we want everyone to have a chance to run. Meanwhile, the C.B.s. Alumni Association will hold its Annual Meeting in the late afternoon and then on to Festa CBS'ta in the evening-an event for all our alumni , students, staff, faculty and friends . We don't want to let out all our secrets, but suffice it to say there will be a wine tasting of a special C.B.S. vintage. For those of you who can' t make it (we' ll miss you) we've devised a way for you to participate. We' re erecting a display of memorabilia including letters, photographs and personal remembrances. Please send us any of the above and include your name and address and full details (if necessary) of the pictorial happenings. We' ll be following up with more details but, in case you need instant information, here's the direct hot line number to the chairman of the C.B.s. 10th Anniversary Committee-Professor Ron Subden, Botany and Genetics, (519) 824-4120, Ext. 8346. Make 1981 the year you return to Guelph. 0

Anniversary
"Horizons 1981" symbolizes the position of the College of Biological Science as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary. We stand not only with old horizons behind us, but also with new ones before us. Thus, we see ourselves this year reflecting the traditions we have established and the direction in which they may take us. We are pleased that University of Guelph students chose to share our celebration by incorporating "Horizons 1981" in the College Royal theme"ExpandingourHorizons."
C.B.S. T-Shirts
The C.B.S . Alumni Association has ordered white T-shirts for everyone with our anniversary logo emblazoned in College blue on the front. They are available, in sizes S, M, L and XL, at a cost of $5 each including tax . Make cheques payable to: C.B.S Alumni Association. Please do not send cash. All orders should be sent to: C.B .S . Your 1981
Schedule of Alu'm ni Programs
our alumni associations have planned a busy schedule of programs for 1981 and invite alumni to participate in their college association activities as well as those of the University of Guelph Alumni Association. The programs will be more fully explained in brochures and in the Guelph Alumnus from time to time. A few of them are outlined here. Alumni are invited to celebrate Valentine's Day skiing during the fourth Alumni Winter Carnival being held at the Hidden Valley Inn, Huntsville, February 13, 14, and 15. Look forward to a weekend of fun and good times. With the coming of spring, the sap will be running, and faculty and staff at the University's Arboretum will be preparing for Alumni Pancake and Maple Syrup Day on Saturday, April II. In addition to an outdoor pancake breakfast , prepared by alumni volunteers, you'll have the opportunity to hike on the Victoria Woods, Wild Goose Woods, and Colonel John McCrae trails. Another outing for the whole family will be Green Thumb Day, Saturday, May 9. While adults attend seminar sessions on landscaping the home, balcony gardening, houseplants, etc., the youngsters will be enrolled in· their own program. Everyone will meet for lunch. To complete the day, alumni are invited to attend the Guelph Spring Festival concert at the Arboretum Centre that afternoon. Alumni Weekend , June 19-21 will provide something for everyone and, again this year, will feature a special program for our "golden" alumni (graduates of 50 or more years ago) . A special salute this year is extended to the class and friends of 1931 on their 50th anniversary. Classes with graduating years ending in "6" or "I" will celebrate special reunions. If you have not yet heard about your class reunion, contact your class president or the Alumni Office right away and start making plans to attend Alumni Weekend . There will be a Friday night beer garden and, on Saturday, the U.G.A.A. annual meeting will be held. Other social functions on Saturday include a

pancake breakfast, a picnic luncheon and campus tours. Accommodation will be available in residence and everyone is encouraged to attend. The U.G.A .A. special events committee, under the chairmanship of Peter McMullen, CPS ' 76, will be planning other alumni programs. If you have any suggestions, let us hear from you . A bus trip in late September or early October is in the planning stage. Watch your mail for more details regarding this annual fall outing. For more information about alumni programs, please write to me at the Department of Alumni Affairs, Level 4, University Centre, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario N I G 2W I, or call (519) 824-4120 Ext. 2122. In This Issue
For the past four years, your Guelph Alum nus Datelines issues have featured selec tions from the University's collection of Canadian art among illustrations accom panying the 12 calendar pages . I have departed from that arrangement. This issue contains 12 reproductions of art by alumni and members of the University community. Unfortunately, deadlines precluded ap proaching many artists in our midst. who qualify for consideration. Forgive me if you, as an artist, did not have the chance to submit your work. There's always next year. The front cover, a pencil sketch of the front campus, is by Robin Baird Lewis, Arts '73, Development Officer, Department of Alumni Affairs and Development. Ed.
