THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH

The University of Guelph is like no other university in Canada. Research-intensive and learner-centred, our campuses span urban hubs and rural communities. We are known for excellence in the arts and sciences, and for our commitment to developing exceptional thinkers and engaged citizens. U of G has nearly 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students at our campuses in Guelph, Toronto and Ridgetown, including 1,200 international students from more than 100 countries. More than 150 years after the launch of our founding colleges, and more than 50 years since the establishment of the University of Guelph, we now have 122,000 alumni living in 150 countries.

Our students, faculty and staff pursue active inquiry and exercise creativity across a range of disciplines -physical and life sciences, arts and humanities, social sciences, business, agricultural and veterinary sciences. Known for its beautiful, safe campuses and welcoming, supportive culture, U of G blends historical and modern architecture with cutting-edge technology.

Our living and learning environments encourage exploration and the interdisciplinary sharing of new ideas, critical for meeting challenges posed by our more complex and interconnected world. Our faculty scholars and researchers provide students with groundbreaking research opportunities, in laboratories, art studios, libraries and in the field.

Student engagement is fundamental to learning and research at U of G. By focusing on the “whole student, we give University of Guelph graduates the tools and skills to make a difference in our ever-changing world. At Guelph, we turn knowledge into action.

T

THE UNIVERSITY MACE

Created by Guelph artisan Harold Muller and presented to the University by the citizens of Guelph, the mace is carried in the academic procession by the beadle. It is topped by the silver crown of Queen Victoria (reigning monarch when two of the founding colleges were established) and decorated with native Canadian stones. Below the crown are the insignias of Queen Elizabeth II, the founding colleges, and four plaques bearing the coats of arms of Canada, Ontario, the City of Guelph, and the University. The crown is mounted on pine from the former Massey Library and supported by metal forged from an old Ontario farm implement. Sixteen symbols on the shank represent the arts, sciences and various college activities.

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH CREST

The University of Guelph crest was designed by Eric Arthur and John Hall of the University of Toronto School of Architecture. The three components of the design — the crest, shield and motto — represent the University’s ties with the City of Guelph and the University of Toronto (the degree-granting body for the founding colleges before the University of Guelph was incorporated in 1964). The white stallion in the crest links U of G with the House of Hanover’s coat of arms. The name “Guelph” comes from “Welfen,” the family name of the House of Hanover, which intermarried with the English royal line. The three-part shield combines a book (symbolizing learning, the liberal arts and the UofT connection), an astrolabe (symbolizing science), and a cornucopia (a symbol for abundance and agriculture). The crest and shield are used with or without the University of Guelph motto rerum cognoscere causas, is a quote from Virgil that means “to learn the meaning of reality.”

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has continued since the Middle Ages, when the first Universities were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University to another, and within a University, according to the status of the wearer. At the University of Guelph, the Undergraduate’s and Master’s gowns are black, Doctorate gowns are blue. The colours for the degrees are as follows: Bachelor of Applied Science – blue Bachelor of Arts – white Bachelor of Arts and Science – narrow white and gold Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management – red and gold Bachelor of Commerce – taupe Bachelor of Computing – dark blue Bachelor of Engineering – dark green Bachelor of Landscape Architecture – orange Bachelor of Science – gold Bachelor of Science in Agriculture – yellow Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences – purple Bachelor of Science in Technology – narrow blue and gold Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – brown Master of Applied Nutrition – pale gold/pale green Master of Applied Science –gold/green Master of Arts – white Master of Arts (Leadership) – white Master of Bioinformatics – gold/red Master of Business Administration – grey/silver Master of Engineering – green Master of Environmental Sciences – purple Master of Fine Arts – red and white Master of Landscape Architecture – orange Master of Planning – dark green Master of Public Health – blue Master of Science – gold Master of Science (Planning) – gold Doctor of Philosophy – gold with blue cord Doctor of Veterinary Science – gold with gold cord

CONFERRING THE DEGREE / GRANTING THE DIPLOMA

The dignified ceremonials used for conferring degrees have evolved from rituals used in the 12th and 13th century church. Early students were usually clerks in holy orders, monks or priests who wore a habit or cloak with a cowl or hood. Modern academic costume has its roots in the colourful robes introduced by Oxford and Cambridge 600 years ago.

The Convocation ceremony is also an ancient tradition. The ceremony begins with the arrival of the mace, symbol of the University, and the Chancellor, our Senior Executive Officer. The Chancellor confers the degree or grants the diploma while the Beadle places the hood over the recipient’s shoulders. At the University of Guelph, the Beadle – another link between the University and its clerical roots – is the Secretary of Senate. The presentation of the parchment is the final act of the ceremony.

The Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour. The Master’s hood is the same as the Bachelor’s except that it features a double edge.

I am an optimist by nature. In many ways, we are living through what might be remembered as one of the most exciting and important periods in history. Today is not the end of your journey, it is really just the beginning of your new life.

Your time with us at Guelph has prepared you as a new generation of leaders. We are counting on you to use what you have learned and experienced to make the right choices for yourselves and for others in our world.

Life is, in fact, what the University of Guelph is all about. “Changing Lives, Improving Life” is our brand, our identity. It reflects our teaching and research strengths, our contributions to society, and our commitment to enriching the minds and lives of students in hopes that what you’ve learned will serve you – and all of us – well.

Good luck in the next phase of your journey – one that matters to you and to others around you. Congratulations!

THE GRYPHON STATUE

Visitors arriving at the main entranceway to the University of Guelph campus are greeted by a giant bronzed Gryphon statue unveiled in June 2014 as part of Guelph’s 50th anniversary celebrations and Alumni Weekend. The $300,000 project was funded entirely by donations, primarily from alumni and student groups. It was designed by FASTWÜRMS, faculty members, Kim Kozzi and Dai Skuse, and two graduates of the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM), Nicole Vogelzang and Dustin Wilson.

A gryphon — the namesake of U of G sports teams — is a mythical creature with the head, talons and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. FASTWÜRMS tried to design a creature that would convey the complexity of the University, said Skuse. “The Gryphon is a strange hybrid creature, like mathematics and literature, logic and nonsense, academia and popular culture, eagle and lion,” he said. “Our welcome message would be: expect the unexpected. At the University of Guelph, education is a transformative experience.”
