On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, Dr. Richard Padilla will be at the University of Louisville to talk about his longtime career in Student Affairs. The event will begin with counterpart discussions at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Activities Center (SAC). After a light lunch the lecture will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Floyd Theatre (SAC). Dr. Richard Padilla had been the University of Texas at El Paso’s Vice President for Student Affairs from March 1994 to September 2011. He and the staff of the Division of Student Affairs provided comprehensive programs and services to university students that assisted them in developing themselves academically and personally. The Division also worked with elementary and high school students to prepare them to enter and succeed in college. In addition to leading the Division of Student Affairs, he was the Project Director of the university’s Title V Grant and Chair of the following university committees: Customer Service Committee; Tuition and Fees Advisory Committee and the Student Service Fee Allocation Committee. He was the co-chair of the Centennial Commission Task Force on Campus Climate. Before coming to UTEP he worked at the University of Houston from 1982 – 1988. At Houston he served as an Area Coordinator in the Department of Residence Life from 1982-1985, Assistant Dean of Students from 1985-1987 and Associate Dean of Students from 1987-1988. He became Dean of Students at the University of Houston-Downtown in 1988 and served in that capacity until from 1994. Dr. Padilla has served as chair of the Council of Student Services Vice Presidents, a statewide association of the chief student affairs officers for public universities in Texas and was the chair of The University of Texas System Vice Presidents Committee. He recently concluded a two-year appointment to the Board of Directors for Region III of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Additionally, he served on a national task force for NASPA’s Health Education and Awareness Program that was funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Padilla is the immediate past chair of the El Paso Local Employee’s Committee of the State Employees Charitable Campaign and has been a board member for the past 11 years. He holds an Ed.D. in higher education administration from the University of Houston, a Master’s of Divinity Degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and a bachelor’s in English with a philosophy minor from Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky. He also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University. He is married to Mary Helen Padilla and they have two children, Rick and Lisa and three grandchildren, Janie, Julia, and Ricky.
