BIOGRAPHIES

Noted by The New York Times for giving “the proceedings an invaluable central tread of integrity and stylishness” and having “played with soulful flair,” violinist Ariana Kim made her New York recital debut at Carnegie's Weill Hall during her graduate studies at Juilliard and is now a tenured professor at Cornell University. Together with the Aizuri Quartet, she was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2017 Osaka International Competition, the 2018 M-Prize, and a 2019 GRAMMY nomination for their debut album, Blueprinting. At 16, Ariana made her debut with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, at 24 was appointed acting concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans, and has since become one of the most respected artists of her generation. A recipient of a Cornell University Affinito-Stewart Faculty Grant and a Society for the Humanities Grant, Ariana released her first solo album Routes of Evanescence in December of 2015. Ariana marks her 14th season with The Knights, a New York-based imaginative and diverse musical collective that performs programs ranging from string quartets to bluegrass tunes and Mid-East folk music, to the great chamber orchestra masterpieces of the 20th century. In January of 2015, the group released its seventh album, …the ground beneath our feet, a collection of live performances from a recent U.S. tour. Raised in Minnesota, Ariana finds another musical home in her native Twin Cities as she is now in her 14th season with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota. She will join her father Young-Nam in a CoArtistic Directorship of the CMSM beginning in the 2019-2020 season. Ariana received her masters and doctorate from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of the late Robert Mann, her undergraduate degree from the San Francisco Conservatory with Ian Swensen and Camilla Wicks, and currently co-resides in Ithaca and New York City.

Since making her professional debut at age 13 performing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, pianist Kyung Kim has performed widely to critical acclaim in concerto, recital and chamber music performances throughout Asia, North America, and Europe. Recent concerto appearances have been with the Winnipeg, St. Cloud, Madison, Milwaukee, Lawrence University, University of Minnesota, and Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, and the Jeonju and Korean Symphony Orchestras. Other concerts have included solo and chamber music performances for the Niagara (Canada), Heifetz, Bartok, and Salzburg Mozarteum summer music festivals, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, and the Colonial Chamber Series; and repeated solo recital invitations for Wisconsin Public Radio and Television, Chicago’s Live from WFMT, Brandon University’s pro series, and the University of Winnipeg Virtuosi Series. Dr. Kim will also appear with the Quad Symphony this season. She has been heard in radio broadcasts for NPR, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Korean Broadcasting System. A popular clinician and adjudicator, she has presented master classes throughout the U.S., Canada, South Korea, and China, also serving as chamber music coach at the Green Lake Summer Music Festival and resident pianist and artistic advisor to the Brandon Chamber Players. Dr. Kim is a graduate of Seoul National University, and holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her students have garnered top competitive awards throughout the U.S. and Canada.
