Alumnus Perspective

David France M.M. 2003, violin

Professor O’Reilly’s class is still part of my life today—as is the community of musicians in the Twin Cities. My lessons with Ms. O’Reilly and the opportunity to study with members of the Minnesota Orchestra taught me how to prepare for an orchestra audition. They set me up to flourish and took interest in my progress. Very few situations can match that experience.

Students in the University Orchestras, Wind Ensembles, and Choruses have the unique opportunity to study and perform the great masterworks in ensemble literature. Exploring these works, mastering not only the practical playing and singing aspects of performance, but more importantly, living in the spiritual and psychological realm of each piece is some of the most important work we do at the University of Minnesota. We learn from each other, from the master composers, and from great musicians past and present to give performances of the highest level. Expectations are high, and so are the rewards.

Students in our music therapy program will enter a profession that utilizes music to address non-musical goals. Board-Certified Music Therapists (MT-BCs) can work in schools, psychiatric facilities, hospice settings, medical hospitals, long-term care centers, private practice, and rehabilitation centers. Our students can expect a rigorous education with an emphasis on utilizing the best available research. In our On-Campus Music Therapy Clinic, students are able to observe music therapy and treat patients. Our faculty and students are actively engaged in clinical research at the University’s Medical Center and in the community. The Twin Cities offers a plethora of clinical sites for music therapy student experiences.

M.A., 2007, composition

There is a real culture of commissioning new music in the Twin Cities, and that extends to the University of Minnesota. When a School of Music voice student decided to commission a song cycle for her doctoral recital, my composition teacher recommended me. Together, we were able to secure funding from The Schubert Club in Saint Paul. That piece, Nattsanger (Nightsongs), a seven movement song cycle for soprano, clarinet and piano, just won me a McKnight Artist Fellowship.

Student Perspective

• As a public institution the University of Minnesota offers residents the opportunity to get the most out of their tax dollars.

When looking at doctoral programs, I researched nearly all of the major voice programs from coast to coast. The U stood out above the crowd for many reasons—rigorous academics, outstanding faculty, performance opportunities both within the school and in the local community, and a program that was flexible enough to meet my needs as a scholar, teacher, and emerging artist. From my strong relationship with my mentor and advisor to the ensembles and peers with which I have performed, my degree program has helped me grow in every aspect of my craft. I don’t think any other school would have been such a perfect fit for me!

Fabulous Location The School of Music is located in the Twin Cities on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank campus (see photo at right). The Twin Cities area is recognized as one of the best locations in which to live and is renowned for its cultural output and depth. The Twin Cities: Cultural Epicenter The Twin Cities are the home of the world-class Minnesota Opera and two internationally acclaimed orchestras—the Minnesota Orchestra (see top left photo) and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Minneapolis has more theatre seats per capita than any other city besides New York and features more than 30 venues and nearly 100 theater groups, including the Guthrie Theater (see bottom left photo) and the Children’s Theatre Company, recognized as two of the country’s best. Some of the finest art and design museums in the country can be found in the Twin Cities. There are outstanding collections in newly expanded, or about to be expanded, museums by such internationally recognized architects as Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (Walker Art Center—see middle left photo), Frank Gehry (Weisman Museum), and Michael Graves (Minneapolis Institute of the Arts) along with a bevy of cutting edge galleries.
