DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Year three of UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey has arrived! We are looking forward to another great season of fast paced University hockey at the Dog Pound!!! As we move ahead, we look to continue to attract the best staff, coaches and students to our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs combined with top flight athletic facilities, all of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students. We are very excited to introduce Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom as our new head coach. She is a natural fit for the program and her knowledge of the game at all levels is exceptional. We look forward for her to step into her new role with the team and we are certain that the program will continue to grow and reach great heights under her direction. With the pillars put in place over the past two years, coach Gary Pitcher left the program in a great situation to move forward. He simply did an outstanding job putting together a competitive roster of 22 eligible players from scratch, which requires all of the players to be full-time students at UOIT, a daunting task. Now entering year three, the team is in great position to move towards contender status under coach Nystrom’s guidance, when our student-athletes move into their third year with the team, combined with our strong recruiting class. Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which mirrors the reputation and success of our existing intercollegiate programs. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The sense of pride will also be emphasized within varsity athletics as it creates an active and vibrant atmosphere on campus.

This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the caliber of coaching staff assembled along with the plan we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters. We hope you enjoy year three of Ridgebacks hockey! LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS! Ken Babcock Director of Athletics

2009-10 UOIT RIDGEBACKS WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad - size arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwell’s on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

2009-10 UOIT

RIDGEBACKS

OPENING NIGHT - 2007

Opening Night September 29, 2007 It was an afternoon to remember for the UOIT women’s hockey team and their newest fans, as university hockey officially arrived in Durham Region when the Ridgebacks skated to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Western Mustangs, during their historic debut in OUA action. The Ridgebacks hit the ice with energy and momentum, boosted by a big crowd at the Campus Ice Centre. The first ever regular season Ridgeback goal happened at 5:27 of the first period, as assistant captain Sarah Carter opened the scoring. Unfortunately the lead was short lived, as Western was able to tie the score on the power play with only seconds remaining in the period.

2009-10 UOIT RIDGEBACKS WOMEN’S HOCKEY

After falling behind 2-1, the Ridgebacks were able to tie the game with just under ten minutes to play on a nice passing play between Carling Jeyes and Rikki Palmateer sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy and eventually the game into overtime. In the overtime period, the Ridgebacks got their signals crossed at their own blue line and Western made them pay at the 1:06 mark.

20

“I was very pleased with our team’s effort; all the girls really understood how special the game was and what it means to UOIT varsity sports,” said head coach Gary Pitcher. “These girls will forever hold a place in our program’s history as the first to lace up for the Ridgebacks and they are representing UOIT incredibly well. It was great to see fans in the stands, cheering on these skilled and talented young women. I couldn’t be more proud of them.” The women’s OUA debut is the result of three years of planning and preparation for UOIT’s entry into both men’s and women’s varsity hockey. The Ridgebacks of UOIT were officially accepted as the 19th member of the OUA in early 2006. “This first game of the women’s hockey season represents a new chapter in varsity sports at UOIT,” said Ken Babcock, Athletic Director at UOIT. “With the men’s team ready to take to the ice for its first-ever game in October, UOIT students, staff and faculty, and hockey fans in Durham Region can take pride in these hockey teams for many years to come. The OUA is widely considered to be among the highest levels of sports competition available in the province. This is a real opportunity for Durham sports fans to catch some tremendous hockey.” The momentous game kicked off with a ceremonial puck drop featuring UOIT president Dr. Ronald Bordessa, UOIT Student Association president Fraser McArthur and Babcock. Joining the UOIT dignitaries was special guest Glenn Coady, whose suggestion of the Ridgebacks as a varsity team name for UOIT was chosen from more than 300 submissions.

OUA - WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

OUA Women of Influence Jessica Bosse - Rowing UOIT Ridgebacks women’s rower and Oshawa resident, Jessica Bosse, was recognized at the OUA Women of Influence Luncheon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For the last six years, the OUA recognized the top female scholar-athletes from across the province who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study. At the gala, two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek was the keynote speaker. Bosse is a UOIT student-athlete who strives for excellence, as she is highly dedicated to both her education and to the sport of rowing. Currently enrolled in the challenging Health Science program and on the varsity rowing team, the Oshawa native is upholding an ‘A’ average. Once on the water, Bosse is all business. She has proved her versatility on the team as the coaching staff has used her as a rower and as a coxswain, being a leader in both capacities. She rallies and drives her crew to more exertion and effort in practice and at regattas. Bosse also plays an active role in the local community. She has helped spearhead a number of community initiatives involving the Ridgebacks. UOIT TRADITIONS

Ridgebacks Nickname

The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A Ridgeback is a large and well muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus. Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

Hunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.

Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

The BLUE CREW

The Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets. Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pre-game burgers and hot dogs available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.

2008-09

The UOIT Ridgebacks inaugural season was a huge success! Head coach Gary Pitcher and his Ridgebacks took to the ice for the first time on September 29, 2007 in front of a capacity crowd at the Campus Ice Centre. The team skated to a 3-2 overtime loss against the Western Mustangs on the memorable afternoon. Assistant captain Sarah Carter scored the team’s first goal at 5:27 of the first period. The Ridgebacks first win came on November 3, 2007 with a 4-2 road victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Melissa Scott was in net for the win while Jennifer Campitelli picked up the game winning goal.

In yet another season of firsts for UOIT, the Ridgebacks picked up a 3-2 shootout victory over Brock University for the team’s first ever home win on October 10, 2008. Freshman goalie Emma Thompson stopped all three Badger shooters in the win while Sarah Matthews scored the lone goal. Thompson also recorded the Ridgebacks first ever shutout with a 3-0 victory over Queen’s on January 10, 2009. After two years with the program, head coach Gary Pitcher stepped down at the end of the season and Karen Nystrom was named the second head coach in Ridgebacks history.

DR. JUDY MCCAW MEMORIAL TROPHY The Women’s Ice Hockey Championship team is presented with the Dr. Judy McCaw Trophy. Originally awarded in 1922 as the WIAU Ice Hockey Trophy, it was rededicated in 1972 by the University of Guelph in McCaw’s honour. McCaw was a feisty center forward on Guelph’s women’s hockey team. She is fondly remembered for her exceptional leadership qualities, aptitude in the classroom and her overall athletic ability. The well like veterinarian died an untimely death in the mid 1960’s.
