DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE It is the seventh year of UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey and we expect bigger and better things from the blue and white at the Campus Ice Centre! As we move ahead, we look to continue to provide the best staff, coaches and students at our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities; all of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students. Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which becomes an annual contender in the OUA and CIS. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The OUA is an exciting brand of hockey and we think once you have witnessed a game, you will keep coming back. Head Coach and Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom and her coaching staff are back for another season, as they look to build off the momentum generated from last season after qualifying for the OUA playoffs. The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwells on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgeback team also has their own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage. This season we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the high caliber of coaching staff assembled, along with a highly talented roster we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters. We hope you enjoy year seven of UOIT women’s hockey! LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS! Ken Babcock Director of Athletics

UOIT TRADITIONS

Ridgebacks Nickname The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident as well as thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus. Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

Hunter the Ridgeback Hunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa. Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

The BLUE CREW The Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets. Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwells on the Ridge.

FIRST PLAYOFF APPEARANCE The UOIT women’s hockey team reached a program high in the 2012-13 season as they made the playoffs for the first time in program history. After a growing hockey squad and competing in the OUA for five previous years, the Ridgebacks finally made it past regular season play. The Ridgebacks posted their best numbers with a 12-16-1-2 record on the year. In a conference of 11 teams, only the top eight make it to post-season play. The Ridgebacks finished seventh in a tight point race and were paired with the nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons for their first round of playoffs. Despite a hard fought effort, the Ridgebacks were eliminated after the first round in a heart-breaking double overtime loss in their second game. Sarah Worthington scored the first ever playoff goal and Jaclyn Gibson added one as well. “We were all devastated at the goal that was scored in overtime but we were still really proud of how hard and fast we came out of the gate in front of our home crowd,” said veteran forward Sarah Worthington. “Our fans were on a level that I have never seen before in the OUA. They deserve so much appreciation and are part of the reason why we played as well as we did; they kept the team so pumped up. Scoring the first ever playoff goal on home soil is a feeling I still get chills about; I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. After four years of being a Ridgeback, this was the team that deserved the success we had; everyone was on the same page and had the same goals.” The women’s first ever playoff game at home was certainly a success from a fan standpoint. The team played in front of one of the largest and loudest crowds in history. Ridgeback senior and graduating goaltender Jessica Larabie made 38 saves on 41 shots as they were outshot 41-25 in the game The Ridgebacks are already looking forward to their next playoff run.

DR. JUDY MCCAW MEMORIAL TROPHY The Women’s Ice Hockey Championship team is presented with the Dr. Judy McCaw Trophy. Originally awarded in 1922 as the WIAU Ice Hockey Trophy, it was rededicated in 1972 by the University of Guelph in McCaw’s honour. McCaw was a feisty center forward on Guelph’s women’s hockey team. She is fondly remembered for her exceptional leadership qualities, aptitude in the classroom and her overall athletic ability. The well liked veterinarian died an untimely death in the mid 1960’s. OUA WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Vanessa Johnstone • Hockey/Tennis Vanessa Johnstone of the UOIT hockey and rowing teams was selected as a 2013 recipient. The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. For the past five years, the communications major has been a key part in UOIT’s growth as an athletic program as she was the Ridgebacks first two-sport athlete as a member of the women’s hockey and tennis program. On the ice, Johnstone played in 105 games and scored 23 goals and 24 assists. In 2011/12, she was named the Ridgebacks women’s hockey leadership award winner. Another highlight included scoring two goals in the inaugural OUA Outdoor Classic at Ivor Wynn Stadium in Hamilton, Ont. As a member of the tennis team, Johnstone played in the 2012 OUA championship hosted by the Ridgebacks. The UOIT tennis program reached new heights that year, earning their first points at the championship. Academically, Johnstone is an OUA and UOIT academic award winner. As the marketing plan designer for a UOIT capstone project, she was in charge of creating a marketing plan for UOIT’s Diversity in Leadership Program. Throughout her five years at UOIT, she also attended a number of community programs involved with the UOIT cares program. Christie Attwood (rowing), Shannon Galea (rowing and squash), Rikki Palmateer (hockey), Chrissy Tereshyn (hockey) and Jessica Bosse (rowing) are the Ridgebacks past recipients of the award.
