Dr. Ron Bordessa

As UOIT wraps up just its eighth academic year, everyone within the university community truly has reason to celebrate not just our academic and research achievements, but also the many new milestones reached by our student-athletes. Our growing varsity program continues to help UOIT gain tremendous recognition locally, provincially and on the national stage. We are proud of the dedicated students who wear the Ridgeback colours and challenge themselves to compete at the highest possible level. As UOIT’s full-time graduate and undergraduate enrolment surpassed 7,400 students in the 2010-11 year, we also saw our list of varsity program offerings expand again. The universities we compete against are taking notice of UOIT, and the opposition knows that they will have to bring their best in order to match the strength and spirit of Ridgeback athletes. This year, UOIT teams have established a number of new records and our athletes have posted personal bests that will set the standard for the Ridgebacks in the years ahead. The life of an athlete and a student is obviously a busy one, and success requires a total commitment to academics in addition to practices and competition. We salute all of you for the sacrifices you’ve made on behalf of UOIT and hope you have acquired lifelong good memories of UOIT. On behalf of everyone at UOIT, it is my pleasure to thank all our athletes for another fantastic year. Sincerely, Ron Bordessa President

As a UOIT varsity athlete, you are a recognized student leader on our campus. Your determination, initiative, teamwork and superior athletic ability earned you a position on our varsity team. You have demonstrated outstanding athletic abilities in tennis, rowing, hockey, soccer and dance that will raise the bar for our future athletes. As a young university, UOIT strives every day to build a reputation of program excellence and commitment to student development. Our varsity program is an example of where we exceeded all expectations. This year we expanded our UOIT varsity program by launching our men’s varsity soccer team, both our men’s and women’s hockey had their best season yet, our tennis team were finalists at the 8th Annual Sydney Hermant Memorial Doubles Tournament and rowing achieved their first OUA Championship medal. This is a tremendous accomplishment and well worth the acknowledgement. With that, I would like to pay tribute to all our coaches – your determination and drive to succeed has built up our fine reputation and I thank you on behalf of the students, staff and faculty. I would like to congratulate Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics and Recreation for his UOIT varsity vision and ability to deliver every time. These accomplishments are the result of recruiting the recognized expert coaches and dedicated staff who are committed to making the student athletic experience a significant part of our students’ university education. If you are a graduating student, I believe your experience in varsity athletics will contribute significantly to your career success. If you are a returning student, we look forward to seeing you as a senior member of our varsity program next year and supporting the UOIT Ridgebacks! Sincerely, Margaret Greenley Vice President, Student Affairs

Ken Babcock

It takes a great deal of dedication and commitment to play a varsity sport, and varsity athletics is an important part of any top University and that includes UOIT. In such a very short time UOIT has established itself as top-flight university in Canada as well as a school that boasts top-flight varsity programs. We are extremely proud of all our Ridgeback student-athletes, coaches, team staff, and supporters as we complete the fifth season of OUA and CIS competition. In doing so our teams continued to move forward and establish new high marks including play-off contention and OUA Championship success. I am very confident that this success will continue to rise with the top calibre of coaches we have in place along with the top calibre student-athletes committed to our programs. UOIT Varsity Athletics is a special thing unlike any other. Once you are a Ridgeback you will always be a RIdgeback. It is all about team at UOIT and the tradition of success built on hard work and training will prove to be the key ingredient in reaching the ultimate goals on the OUA and CIS sports stage. Not to mention the other new sports we are planning and hope to add in the near future. We hope you enjoy the pages that follow outlining and profiling each of our varsity teams as well as the many individual and team accomplishments recorded during the 2010-11 season. Lastly if you are a graduating Ridgeback this spring we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours and hope that you will support the Ridgebacks Alumni initiatives. If you are a returning student-athlete we wish you an enjoyable summer and we will look forward to seeing you in the fall for another exciting Ridgebacks season. Sincerely, Ken Babcock Director of Athletics University of Ontario Institute of Technology

Our UOIT Varsity Tennis Team has shown steady improvement every year. Competing against larger schools it has been a challenge for our Varsity tennis teams but this past season our Men’s and Ladies Varsity Tennis Teams competed at their highest level yet. With more practice time and Varsity players showing a keen interest in improving we are definitely headed in the correct direction. We look to see returning Varsity players practice throughout the off-season. With the introduction of our new UOIT/DC tennis club we hope to give our players even more opportunities to improve and expand their tennis games. 2011/2012 will be an even stronger year for UOIT!

The dance team had another exciting season of competition, training, showcases and varsity event performances. The team worked very hard throughout the year choreographing routines for their major competitions in March. The team this year competed and showed very well in Niagara falls at Dance Odyssey, in Guelph at Terpsichore, and in Brantford at STRIVE. The team also was provided the opportunity to perform several half time shows at the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships and continued to build their exposure on campus by hosting their 2nd annual showcase event at the Regent theatre in downtown Oshawa. The Team will be graduating a number of dancers this year and are truly appreciative of what they have done to establish this team. On the flip side the team is very excited with what the new dancers have contributed in 2011 and how they will take the team to the next level of competition throughout their UOIT career. 9

This season was an exciting one for the UOIT Women's Lacrosse team. Not only was it their first year competing as an official team within the OUA, but the 2010 season also saw many inexperienced players learn the game, and veteran players demonstrate amazing skill and leadership on and off the field. Overall the season was a great success. We improved over the course of the season and proved to OUA Lacrosse that UOIT was a competitor. We capped off the season with a great showing at the OUA Championships in London, Ontario and a prestigious OUA All-Star nomination in our attacking end. The coaching staff and returning players are looking forward to the 2011 season!

VASO VUJANOVIC, Head Coach

What a year, what a challenge……we went through some ups and downs …we played some good games and some bad games but overall it was a great year for learning. Let me reflect on some key factors of the season: We had some talented players from 2009 and we had recruited some talent during the 2010 pre-season program. My main focus was to establish a team with the players that pose a technical ability, tactical knowledge and mental toughness to be able to compete in the very tough and physically league. As the new kid in the league, we were expected to be bounced to the point that you take it and crawl as long as you can……and did we ever crawl. We were bruised, knocked, injured, broken bones, but having inexperienced and young players, that is what you get. We came away with a lot of hard earned lessons.

Overall the season was a great success. New rowers entered the program as novices, learning the sport in a matter of days and winning a number of medals throughout the season. Our first OUA placing occurred as a result of a strong novice women’s team. Our novice men similarly had successes, making it to the finals at OUAs and placing in various regattas throughout the fall.

KAREN NYSTROM, Head Coach

“Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Vince Lombardi 2010-11 was a break out year for “ The Team”. Coaches and players alike focused on further developing our program and building as a team both on and off the ice. While there were accomplishments this year with individuals; notably Jessica Larabie named OUA Athlete of the Week and our two graduating captains, Megan Friel (never missed a game in 4 years - Iron Women) Rikki Palmateer (all time points leader) these milestones would not have been achieved without strong team leadership, commitment, support and work ethic.

With accomplishments comes confidence and with confidence comes belief. It has to be in that order. – Coach K

This year’s progress, results and achievements along with the addition of new recruits and a stronger core of experienced veterans, will position us for further ascension and bigger achievements in 2011/12 by the team collectively.
