DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE It is the fifth year of UOIT Ridgebacks hockey and we expect bigger and better things from the blue and white at the Dog Pound after back-to-back playoff seasons!!! As we move ahead, we look to continue to provide the best staff, coaches and students at our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities. All of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students. Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which becomes an annual contender in the OUA and CIS. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The OUA is an exciting brand of hockey and we think once you have witnessed a game, you will keep coming back. Head Coach Marlin Muylaert and his coaching staff are back for another season, as they look to build off the momentum generated from last years’ success. The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound, is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwell’s on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage. This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the high caliber of coaching staff assembled along with a highly talented roster we have in place. Pasztor had an excellent first season with the Ridgebacks, as he was named the team’s and overall freshman athlete of the year. The commerce major finished third in OUA Western conference freshman defensive scoring and second in UOIT defensive scoring. He led the Ridgebacks in plus/minus while UOIT had the second best power play in the OUA at home. Pasztor was a workhorse for Grande Prairie of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2009-10, playing in all 69 games for the Storm including nine playoff games. Prior to going out west, Pasztor played one season with the Aurora Tigers of the OPJHL (2008-09) and two seasons with the St. Thomas Stars in the Western Ontario Hockey League (WOHL). Playing in the WOHL from 2006-07 to 2007-08, Pasztor played in 91 games throughout the regular season, recording 55 points, 26 of which were on the power play. Pasztor was selected by Mississauga in the 2005 Ontario Hockey League draft. Year 2010-11 Totals

Patrick MORAN

Moran joins the Ridgebacks after a three year career in the OHL in which he played for the Guelph Storm and Windsor Spitfires. He played in over 100 games in the OHL including five in the postseason. He is a steady defensive defenceman who spent the last two seasons in the OPJHL where he had back-to-back 26 point seasons for the Georgetown Raiders and the Aurora Tigers.

Noyes had his best overall season with the Ridgebacks in 2010-11 as he was named the team’s MVP. He led the defence in scoring with 13 points and was a consistent force in the team’s own zone. In 2009-10, Noyes led the Ridgebacks blueline in points with four goals and eight assists. In his freshman year, he emerged as the leading rookie defencemen in scoring for the OUA and second overall in the entire league with eight goals and 15 assists. Noyes earned provincial recognition with a spot on the OUA all-rookie team. Noyes is the Ridgebacks all-time leader in power play goals with 11 and leads all defencemen with 48 career points. Prior to joining UOIT, Noyes was named the Caley Cup player of the year in the Western Ontario Hockey League playing for the St. Mary’s Lincolns. Year 2008-09 2009-10 2010-11 Totals

Jeremy WHELAN

Whelan brings an abundance of intensity going into his fourth year with the Ridgebacks. His fierce speed and quick shot have allowed him to play both on the wing and also a few shifts on the blueline for the power play. Whelan is the all-time leader in postseason scoring with three points. Whelan missed almost half of the 2009-10 season with a separated shoulder, but bounced back in 2010-11 playing in 26 games and recording 12 points. In his freshman season with the Ridgebacks, Whelan led the team in penalty minutes with 82 (a single season high), punishing opposing teams on the forecheck with his strength and speed. Whelan is second all-time in Ridgebacks penalty minutes with 161 in his career. In 2007-08, Whelan averaged over a point per game splitting time with the Hamilton Red Wings and Huntsville Otters. Shawn CONNORS

Connors had a solid freshman season with the Ridgebacks as he played in 16 conference games. The stay at home defenceman also made two playoff appearances against Laurier in the opening round. Prior to joining UOIT, Connors had plenty of success in two seasons with the Niagara Falls Canucks. The blueliner was one of the league’s top scoring defenceman, recording 92 points in 95 games. He was also a dominant physical presence for the Canucks recording 283 penalty minutes. The Chatham native was drafted by the Kingston Frontenacs in the fourth round of the 2004 OHL draft. He played for the Frontenacs in 2005-06, where his team finished with a 37-24-4-3 record, good enough for second place in the East Division. He was plus one in 51 games.

Mike MONTGOMERY

Montgomery suffered an injury in the first half of the season, limiting his play to the second semester. He scored his first OUA goal on a penalty shot against York University. He also excels in the classroom as he earned the men’s hockey Top GPA award. In 2003, Montgomery was drafted in the third round of the OHL draft by the Peterborough Petes. He played for his hometown Oshawa Legionaires prior to joining Peterborough, where he made his physical presence known recording 212 penalty minutes in 63 games, while scoring 42 points. He later joined Peterborough, playing in 48 games in two seasons for the Petes. In 2007-08, Montgomery scored 36 points in 35 games with the Welland Junior Canadiens. He was a key component of their power play unit scoring eight goals and five assists with the man advantage. He also netted three game winning goals while recording 134 penalty minutes. Kyle WETERING

Wetering enters his fourth season with the Ridgebacks. In 2010-11, he was third in goal scoring (9) and fourth in points (16). In the playoffs, he scored the overtime winner in game one against Laurier. In the 2009-10 season, the Pickering native had two multi-point games and recorded the team’s first ever hat-trick against the Brock Badgers.. His work ethic and ability to see the ice clocked him a tremendous amount of ice time along with 12 goals and five assists for 17 points. Wetering can be looked at to continue to be a crowd favourite, and as a player who comes through at the right time with the right play. Wetering joined UOIT after four seasons in the OPJHL with the Toronto Junior Canadiens and Wexford Raiders. In two years with the Canadiens, he averaged almost a point per game with 91 points. Devon ROEZLER

Roezler is a speedy, energetic centreman who spent the bulk of his career playing Junior with the Chatam Maroons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. His last season in Chatham, Roezler played 50 games tallying 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points. In five years with the Maroons, he recorded 135 points including 54 goals.

Annetta is a steady defenceman who has junior experience playing with Orangeville of the OPJHL and Port Hope Junior C. The freshman will add plenty of depth to the Ridgebacks solid blueline this season.

Brendan WISE

Wise had an outstanding start to his OUA career as he led the Ridgebacks in rookie goal scoring (9) and second in points (14). The Stouffville native had six points in his first four games with UOIT, including a three point game against the Windsor Lancers. The 6’0 winger joined UOIT after a three year career with the North York Rangers of the OPJHL. Wise was no stranger to the score sheet as he tallied 145 points in 143 regular season games with the Rangers. In his final season as team captain, Wise led all scorers on the Rangers with 31 goals and 34 assists in 48 games. On the power play, he registered seven goals and 12 assists. In addition to his junior career, Wise also found success at the high school level, leading the Stouffville Spartans to an OFSAA championship in 2006-07. Year 2010-11 Totals

Josh VATRI “A”

Vatri is the Ridgebacks all-time leader in goals (46) and penalty minutes (187) heading into the 2011-12 season. Last year, Vatri led the team in goals (14) and was second in points (21). For two seasons prior, Vatri earned the team’s top scorer award. He scored the Ridgebacks game winning goal in their first playoff game against Western. . Other successes include the 2008-09 UOIT freshman of the year and being named to the OUA all-rookie team. Vatri continues to amaze everyone with his ability to find the net and his teammates. Vatri had an excellent junior career playing with Erie and Kingston of the OHL and Huntsville of the OPJHL. James WOODCROFT

The addition of Woodcroft brings a fast skating left winger with good puck skills to the Ridgebacks line-up. He spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as a member of the Memorial Cup back-to-back champion Windsor Spitfires. After his career in Windsor, he split time between the Milton Merchants and Brampton Capitals of the OPJHL where he scored 52 goals and 49 assists for 101 points in 48 games. The coaching staff expects him to become a big offensive contributor once he adjusts to CIS hockey.

Andrew RANDAZZO

DEFENCE 5-9 • 218 • 1 • Business • Hamilton, Ont. • Drummondville QMJHL

This past season in Drummondville, Randazzo earned top honours as he was awarded the Kevin Lowe Trophy as the league’s best defensive defenceman. The Hamilton native registered 34 points with a plus-30 rating this year for the Voltigeurs, who finished in second place in the TELUS west division with a 45-15-5-3 record. Drummondville went on to sweep Chicoutmi in the first round of the playoffs, but lost to Gatineau four games to two in the second round. In ten playoff games, Randazzo had three goals and one assist and was a plus-5 rating. In 2008-09, Randazzo’s first year with the team, Drummondville had their best season in franchise history winning the Jean Rougeau Trophy as the QMJHL regular season champions. The Voltigeurs went on to win their first league championship beating Shawinigan four games to three in the conference finals. At the Memorial Cup, Drummondville fell 3-2 in overtime to the eventual champions, the Windsor Spitfires. In three years with the Voltigeurs, Randazzo played in 197 games and scored 23 goals and 69 assists. He also played in 43 playoff games where he registered 17 points. Prior to heading east, Randazzo spent the 2007-08 season with the Hamilton Red Wings in the OPJHL where he scored 40 points in 44 games.

Ryan OLIVER

Returning to Canada after spending a year in Vermont, Oliver settled right in to the Ridgebacks lineup playing in 27 games, recording four goals and four assists. He also played significant minutes during the Ridgebacks first round of the playoffs. During the 2008-09 season playing for Norwich University, Oliver appeared in 18 games, as the team posted an 11-5-3 conference record and made it to the ECAC East quarterfinals. From 2004 to 2008, Oliver played in the OPJHL for the Wellington Dukes, Stouffville Spirit and Lindsay Muskies. Over four years, he played in 176 games racking up 118 points. In 2007-08, he averaged a point per game with the Muskies. Oliver was drafted in the fifth round of the 2004 OHL draft by Sault Ste. Marie.

After playing the 2007-08 season with the Port Hope Predators of the OPJHL, Stoughton was immediately picked up by Sarnia in the OHL. During his three seasons with the Sting, he logged a significant amount of ice-time playing in 150 games in a defensive role. Stoughton scored 19 goals and added 33 assists in the three seasons with the Sting while racking up 97 penalty minutes. Playing with the Predators was a natural stepping-stone into the OHL for the Bobcaygeon native. In Port Hope, he scored 28 points in 48 games, which included scoring five shorthanded markers. The Predators finished with a 3013-0-6 record and advanced to the divisional semi-finals. Stoughton returned to the same franchise (now known as the Trenton Golden Hawks) in 2010-11, where scored 32 points in 23 games averaging 1.4 points per game. Despite playing less than half of the season, Stoughton finished sixth in team scoring.

Steve SPADE

After suffering a serious knee injury in 2009-10, Spade had a bounce back year playing in all 28 conference games for the Ridgebacks. In three seasons with UOIT, Spade has been able to establish himself as a tough, physical blueliner who found his home on the penalty kill unit. His ability to patrol the net area made him a real asset, especially in penalty kill situations. Spade spent four seasons in the OHL after being drafted by the Barrie Colts in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2003 priority draft. The big defender saw a lot of ice time in the league playing in a total of 227 regular season games over four seasons for the Barrie Colts, Belleville Bulls and St. Michaels Majors. Kody MUSSELMAN

Musselman was Sarnia’s first round selection in the 2004 OHL draft after playing 34 games with the Oshawa Legionaires in the OPJHL. The Whitby native was with the Sting for two seasons, playing in over fifty games each year. Prior to the 2006-07 season, Musselman was traded to the Oshawa Generals where he played in 42 regular season and nine playoff games. Musselman played in total 210 games in the OHL, 13 of which were in the postseason after finishing his junior career with the Brampton Battalion in 2006-07. Known for his strength and toughness, he racked up 313 penalty minutes over four seasons.

Kevin GEORGE

George had an outstanding rookie year with UOIT, leading all freshmen in scoring with 15 points in 26 games. He had three multi-point games for the Ridgebacks and five multi-game point streaks. Fans of junior hockey in Lindsay became familiar with the hard working style of play of George, as he has spent the three seasons with the Muskies. In 2009-10, George was eighth in league scoring with 74 points in 50 games. The playmaking forward averaged 1.16 points per game in his career, scoring 36 goals in 2008-09 and 41 goals in 2009-10.

Tony RIZZI “A”

In his first three years with the Ridgebacks, Rizzi has established himself as one of the top power forwards in the OUA. He ranks third in career assists (33) and points (57) and is fourth in career goals (24). Known across the province for scoring, Rizzi is an offensive threat every time he is on the ice. He also scored the Ridgebacks first playoff goal against Western in the opening round of the 2010 playoffs. His nine power play goals ranks him fourth on the UOIT career charts. Drafted third overall in the 2003 OHL Priority draft by Kingston, the right winger played three seasons with the Frontenacs before being sent to Peterborough during his fourth and final year in the league. Prior to joining the Ridgebacks in 2009-10, Rattie played four seasons with the Niagara Falls Canucks. In 2009-10, Rattie appeared in 37 regular season games, posting an 18-9-2-3 record with a 3.41 goals against average. The team made a deep playoff run, with Rattie starting in all 12 playoff games with a 7-5 record. The 6’1 netminder had a 62 save performance in an overtime victory over Welland.

Guy had an impressive sophomore season with the Ridgebacks, leading the team back to the playoffs. He set team records in wins (10), save percentage (.903) and goals against average (3.21). He also became the first male athlete to be named the OUA athlete of the week. In his first season with UOIT, the league recognized his outstanding performance in his freshman season as he was named to the all-rookie team as well as being named an OUA second team all-star. With nine wins under his belt after his first season with the Ridgebacks, the Whitby Native won big on awards night be honoured as the men’s hockey freshman of the Year award, and overall freshman of the year award. Guy joined UOIT after an illustrious OHL career including stops in Guelph, Kingston and London. Appearing in 109 regular season games and seven playoff matches in the OHL, the Whitby native has plenty of big game experience between the pipes. Dawson had a breakout game in the 2010 preseason, where he stopped 51 shots in the Ridgebacks 3-2 victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs. It was the team’s first victory over an NCAA opponent. He has led the Ridgebacks to points in 13 games and has a career save percentage of .877. Dawson joined the Ridgebacks after the holiday break in the 2008-09 season and played net in every game following, helping the Ridgebacks hit the .500 plateau in their second half of the season. The Bracebridge native joined UOIT after a successful junior career with Huntsville of the OPJHL. In 2007-08, he had a 31-6 record in between the pipes with a 2.11 goals against average. Luke VANMOERKERKE “A”

VanMoerkerke had a solid freshman year after being named the Chris Kostka leadership award winner. He finished fourth in freshman scoring with nine points. In junior, he split time between the London Knights and Brampton Battalion playing in the OHL from 2006 to 2009. In total, he played in 102 games, racking up 131 penalty minutes. VanMoerkerke was known across the league as a gritty forward with a lot of physical presence. During the 2008-09 season, he joined Brantford of the OPJHL and had an immediate impact on the team as the Eagles went on to win the 2009 Sutherland Cup. In 2009-10, VanMoerkerke guided the Eagles back to the Sutherland Cup finals. The 6’4 forward finished his OPJHL career with 80 games played, 34 goals, 47 assists and 134 penalty minutes during the regular season. He was also selected as UOIT’s first OUA Champion for Life. Purves has been named top defensive player for the UOIT men’s hockey team in back-to-back years and has been named the fifth captain in the history of the team. Purves suffered an injury in his freshman year, but has had two seasons playing 25 games and making six playoff appearances. Last year, he had career highs in goals and assists. Being a strong skater, Purves remains extremely physical in the corners during each and every battle. Before joining UOIT, Purves spent time in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires and Barrie Colts. 2011-12 COACHES PROFILES Marlin MUYLAERT

Muylaert enters his fifth season behind the bench as head coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team. The Port Perry native has a wealth of experience coaching University hockey, having been with the University of Guelph (1988-1999), Ohio University (1984-1986), the University of Wisconsin at Eauclaire (1999 to 2002) and the UOIT Ridgebacks (2007-present). With the University of Guelph, Muylaert coached the Gryphons to eight divisional titles and two provincial championships. His teams were constantly ranked nationally in the top 10 rankings. In 1996-97, the Gryphon men’s hockey team captured the CIAU championship title defeating the University of New Brunswick 4-3 at Maple Leaf Gardens in front of a crowd of 5,733 fans. The Gryphons went through the regular season setting a record with 21 victories and only four losses in league play. Enroute to the national title, the Gryphons captured the Queen’s Cup defeating York 3-0. Goaltender Matt Mullin was also awarded the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy for Outstanding Player in the CIAU. In 2000, Muylaert was recognized by his peers at the institution as he was voted the University of Guelph coach of the decade and his championship winning team was inducted in the Gryphons Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. On Friday, February 6, 2009, Muylaert picked up his 200th overall win coaching in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) as the Ridgebacks defeated the Brock Badgers by a final score of 3-2. Muylaert also coached at an international level during his tenure with Guelph as he was selected as the head coach for the World University Games that were held in Slovakia. The Canadian team that year beat Russia 5-1 to win the bronze medal. Prior to joining the Ridgebacks, Muylaert coached the Port Perry Mojacks in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. Muylaert also runs the Ridgebacks/Scary Skate Hockey Camps along side Mary Giacalone, which is a skating focused hockey camp offering programs suitable to boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.

2011-12 COACHES PROFILES Craig FISHER

Associate Coach (2)

Fisher spent 12 seasons playing professional hockey in the NHL, AHL, IHL as well as overseas. He was chosen 56th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL Entry Draft. Rather than jumping straight to the pros, he decided to attend the University of Miami of Ohio where he scored 108 points in 76 games over two seasons with the Redskins. In 1990, he was named to the CCHA First All-Star Team. After turning pro, he scored 43 goals for the Hershey Bears in 1990-91, then joined the Edmonton Oilers via a trade involving NHL hall of famer Jari Kurri. Fisher was a solid two-way forward for the AHL’s Cape Breton Oilers, but never made it to the parent club. Fisher signed with Chicago Black Hawks in 1994 and found instant success with their IHL farm team in Indianapolis scoring 53 goals. The next season, he joined the Orlando Solar Bears and led the IHL with an astonishing 74 goals. In 1997-98, he left for Germany to suit up for the Kolner Haie club for two seasons, before returning to the AHL to play for the Rochester Americans from 1998-2000.

Alex WELKER

Assistant Coach (5)

Welker has been an assistant coach with the Ridgebacks since the beginning of the program. He has coached at various levels in minor hockey for the last 13 years. He served as MMHA president for two years, while leading his Midget team to an OMHA Championship in 2004-05. Welker spent time as an assistant coach under Marlin Muylaert with Port Perry Mojacks Jr. C 2005-06. In 2006-07, he served as an assistant coach of the Ajax Attack in OPJHL. Prior to coaching, Welker played collegiate hockey with the Fleming College Auks of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (1984-1985) in Lindsay, Ont.

Assistant Coach (1)

Legge joins the coaching staff after a four playing career with the Ridgebacks. The Chapleau native was a player with great quickness, agility and instincts who used those traits effectively to give him an advantage over his opponents. A forward when he arrived with the Ridgebacks after playing with Port Hope, Legge converted to defence and quickly became one of the teams most valuable contributors. Legge was one of only four players to play in every game for the Ridgebacks in the first three seasons with the team. A leader on and off the ice, Legge was named the interim captain in 2009-10, and an assistant captain for the 2010-11 season.

Video Coach (4)

Riseley enters his fourth season with the Ridgebacks, first as the video coach. He spent the last three season as the team’s lead statistician. He has experience as an off-ice official for 10 years in the OMHA and OWHA, serving on the provincial level for two seasons. He was also the sole statistician for the DWGHA House League, dealing with stats for over 500 players for four seasons. Riseley is in his fourth year in the Business program at UOIT.

Mark Fitzgerald, a Graduate of Bishop’s University, offers specialized training programs designed around the UOIT varsity hockey team requirements. His programs allow fitness and progress to be monitored at the beginning and the end of the program. Nutritional guidance and supplementary training programs are also provided. Each trainee is closely monitored to ensure optimal results. The training schedule can be set up around your team’s activities. Fitzgerald is also a Fitness Director & Trainer at the Train Like a Pro Fitness facility in Whitby.

Boehmker is in his second season with the Ridgebacks as the equipment manager. He graduated from the sports management program at Durham College and is continuing his education on campus. He worked for his local pro shop in Keswick, Ont. for three years during high school. Boehmker was also a volunteer for the Ridgebacks and Durham Lords for two seasons, as a member of the game day staff.

Mortson joins the Ridgebacks for her first season in 2011-12 as the team’s student therapist. Shannon is in his third year at Sheridan College working on his degree in bachelor of applied health science (athletic therapy).

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

Campus Ice Centre Thanks in part to a partnership with the City of Oshawa, the Campus Ice Centre opened in September, 2005, delivering a spectacular new skating and meeting facility to students, faculty, staff and the community. The arena features two NHL-sized ice surfaces with a seating capacity of 550 on the main rink, with additional standing room for 250. The Campus Ice Centre also houses ten change rooms, a sports retail outlet, business offices, a full-service restaurant (Shagwell’s), snack bar, and catering services. Overlooking each rink is a Community Room, which is available for meetings, workshops and conferences. Shagwell’s overlooks both ice pads and has televisions that carry the big games throughout the year. Their menu features their award winning chicken wings that come in dozens of flavours. It is a great place for the Blue Crew to meet, before and after the game. Fans at the arena have certainly created an excellent atmosphere; letting OUA opponents know that they have entered RIDGEBACK COUNTRY! Campus Tennis Centre The Campus Tennis Centre is located on the north side of campus just across the street from the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre. The centre is the home of the UOIT Ridgebacks varsity tennis team. The Tennis Centre just recently completed construction to make the bubble a permanent fixture on the UOIT campus, which allows all players, members, and athletes to play in a climate controlled environment all year round. The Campus Tennis Centre features six Har-Tru (clay) tennis courts, a pro shop, change rooms as well as a clubhouse. UOIT staff/students also have access to the courts including student intramurals, while lessons and league opportunities also exist. Durham College and UOIT tennis summer camps take place during the summer. Full time students at Durham College and UOIT are entitled to seven day advance booking of tennis courts, which are free when showing your full time student card. The Campus Tennis Centre was home of the 2009 OUA Tennis Championship.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

CRWC The Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics and health & fitness at UOIT. The centre piece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The gymnasium is fully equipped with a top of the line shock resistant maple hardwood floor, seating for 2,000 spectators and a curtain system to create three separate gyms. The triple gym also has three electronic scoreboards, a professional quality sound system and a complete floor covering system available for non-sporting events. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track. Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators. The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. The boardroom has a meeting room capacity of 24, and up to 36 for special event use. Another highlight of the CRWC is the VIP lounge that includes a great view on to main court action or other special events in the gymnasium. The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, the Adidas Cup and the Big 8 Classic. Sharing space with the CRWC is the Campus Health Centre. This facility is home to a medical clinic as well as an on-site pharmacy. The Health Centre is also home to an alternative treatment clinic which offers acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy and nutritional counseling. The CRWC was the proud host of the 2008 Provincial Special Olympics Spring Games.

FLEX Centre

The FLEX Fitness Centre is one of the great new additions of the CRWC at UOIT. The FLEX Fitness Centre is 10,000-sq. ft., full of the best state-of-theart cardio and weight machines. The centre also includes two aerobic/dance studios, two training rooms used for sports training and fitness related classes. Also available to the athletes is a brand new physiotherapy room, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Having these services all under one roof will allow for quicker care, which in turn will result in quicker recovery and a return to game action.

GENERAL INFORMATION UOIT Ridgebacks shock Michigan Wolverines in 3-2 victory By Shawn Cayley - Metroland Media The UOIT Ridgebacks had beaten an NCAA opponent before. But this one was different. This one carried a different level of esteem and removed any doubts regarding the team’s readiness to take a huge step forward this season and be among the top contenders in OUA men’s hockey. A 3-2 win in front of 4,322 at Yost Ice Arena against one of the most prominent NCAA programs ever, the Michigan Wolverines, will do that for a team. “I honestly don’t believe that a bad team goes down and beats Michigan,” coach Marlin Muylaert said when asked what he took out of last weekend’s experience south of the border, where the Ridgebacks also dropped a 7-4 decision to Bowling Green. “I think we’ve got a hell of a hockey team here. We’ve been building towards this team. We’ve got veterans now. We’ve got good leadership. We’ve got depth and we’ve got some great rookies. I think we are ready to start this season properly and become legitimate contenders in the OUA.” The Wolverines roster boasts 11 National Hockey League prospects, including Pickering’s Brennan Serville, and enters the NCAA season as the sixth ranked team in the nation, coming of a Final Four appearance last campaign. “We beat Ferris State last year ... but beating a Ferris State doesn’t come with the same prestige as beating a Michigan does,” said Muylaert. As impressive a feat as the win is, if not for the efforts of Jason Guy, the outcome could have been much different. The Whitby native was stellar between the posts, stopping 54 of the 56 Michigan shots. Muylaert felt the 19-save first period Guy had allowed his club to weather the early storm and settle into their game. The Ridgebacks played much better through the second and into the third, where they took a 3-1 lead at one point, before being forced to hold on. “Jay was there and gave us some terrific goaltending,” Muylaert said. “He was our first star.” The club will need more of that out of Guy during the season, which opens up Saturday night at the Campus Ice Centre when the team hosts the York Lions. Continuing the wave of momentum built from the success in Michigan and getting off to a quick start will be key for the Ridgebacks. Over the past few seasons the team has fallen into a habit of starting slow and picking its game up after Christmas. Muylaert has had enough of that. “You look at last year’s point totals, and you give us six points on games we literally coughed up because of undisciplined play, suspect goaltending or whatever, at the start of the year, and all of the sudden we’re not a seventh-place team, we’re a second- or third-place team,” Muylaert explained. “With home ice advantage we probably win a playoff round and we’re into the conference final four. We’ve got to play all 28 games.”

HISTORY OF THE QUEEN’S CUP The history of the Queen’s Cup is rooted in Canada’s rich hockey tradition. McGill University formed the world’s first organized hockey team in 1877. By 1886, Queen’s University had also formed a team and played their cross-town rivals from Royal Military College in exhibition games. In 1891, a challenge from the McGill team to The University of Toronto resulted in the formation of the Varsity Blues hockey team. Repeated attempts to form an intercollegiate league were unsuccessful because of the expense and distance of travel. It took 10 years of debate and occasional exhibition games, until officials from Queen’s, McGill, Toronto, Osgoode Hall, RMC, Ottawa College and Trinity University met in 1901 and agreed to form a union for the following year. A new era in the hockey world opened with the 1902-03 season, as the world’s first university hockey league was born. As university hockey teams were still relatively new, the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union (CIHU) officials devised two schedules, one was for more experienced teams and other for intermediate-level teams. The “Senior Series”, as it was known, consisted of McGill, Queen’s and the University of Toronto. The schedule in that inaugural season consisted of only two contests (i.e. a one-game series versus each team). The first league game was played in Kingston on Jan. 16, 1903, resulting in a 7-1 victory for Toronto over Queen’s. At that game, the Queen’s hockey club offered a silver trophy, known as the Queen’s Cup, to be presented to the eventual league champion. McGill opened their season at home on Jan. 23, 1903 with a resounding 7-0 loss to the upstart Golden Gaels. The following week, a wild 9-7 McGill victory over the Varsity Blues, resulted in a first-place finish for McGill. Since there was no playoff format in place (that would come about some six decades later), McGill was declared the inaugural Queen’s Cup champions. The trophy has been contested since the 1902-03 season, interrupted only by the two World Wars. After World War II the league expanded and the OUA now includes 16 institutions (after reaching a high of 17 teams in the mid-1980’s). Twelve different schools have hoisted the Queen’s Cup. Toronto has claimed ownership 41 times, including 10 straight championships in the 1920’s and 12 of 14 championships from 1964-1975. McGill is second with 14 titles, followed by UQTR (eight), Queens (six), Guelph and Montreal (five each) and Waterloo twice. Brock, McMaster, Western and Windsor have each hoisted the Cup once. UOIT TRADITIONS

Ridgebacks Nickname The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions. In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus. Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

Hunter the Ridgeback Hunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa. Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

The BLUE CREW The Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets. Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.
