Dr. Tim McTiernan President and Vice-Chancellor

As another successful year of Ridgebacks varsity athletics draws to a close, I am delighted to have this opportunity to congratulate all of UOIT’s student-athletes who have proudly represented our university in competition against your peers from other institutions. The life of an athlete and a student is a busy one, and success requires a total commitment to academics in addition to practices and competition. You have all accepted the challenge to compete at the demanding varsity level – we applaud you for the sacrifices you’ve made on behalf of UOIT and hope you have acquired many great lifelong memories. We celebrate your many achievements this season along with the new individual and team milestones that were reached.

The Ridgebacks have quickly become one of UOIT’s most-recognized symbols. Whether you are on the water at the break of dawn, on the field, on the ice or on the court, your dedication is helping UOIT gain tremendous recognition locally, provincially and on the national stage, and in some cases south of the border. Individually and collectively, you demonstrate the greatest personal values of a university student – through hard work and commitment to your studies, your coaches and teammates. As UOIT’s full-time graduate and undergraduate enrolment surpassed 8,400 students in the 2011-2012 academic year, we also saw our list of varsity program offerings expand again, and we look forward to fielding our first women’s soccer team for OUA competition this fall.

Through my colleagues around the province, I can attest that the universities we compete against are taking notice of UOIT. The rest of Ontario is quickly becoming aware of our university’s full commitment to student success as well as our growing list of achievements in academics and research. This spirit of excellence is echoed by what you, our student-athletes bring to each and every competition.

On behalf of everyone in the university community, I would like to thank you for representing UOIT so capably. You have set the standard for all Ridgebacks sports programs in the years ahead. Go Ridgebacks!

Sincerely,

Tim McTiernan, PhD President

Dr. Pamela Drayson Chief Librarian, Dean of Students

Congratulations to our student athletes on another amazing year! You will later realize that the years you spent at university were amongst the most exhilarating that you experienced, and that you were extremely fortunate in being able to balance a student life that incorporated both academics and athletics.

UOIT strives to build on its strong reputation of program excellence and commitment to student development. This was a banner year of UOIT “firsts” and new team accomplishments at both the provincial and national levels. Women’s field lacrosse, curling and golf were added to our roster. Other highlights included the men’s hockey team defeating a top-ranked NCAA opponent, the women’s hockey program competing in the OUA’s first ever Outdoor Classic, and the women’s rowing team advancing to a national championship. If you are a graduating student, I believe your experience in varsity athletics will contribute significantly to your career success. If you will be a returning student, we look forward to seeing you as a senior member of the varsity program. Leadership, perseverance, sportsmanship—these are the qualities of a UOIT Ridgeback!! Sincerely,

Dr. Pamela Drayson Dean of Students

Ken Babcock

Director of Athletics

It takes a great deal of dedication and commitment to play a varsity sport, and varsity athletics is an important part of our University culture and experience. Through student demand and interest we are very proud and excited that our varsity program roster grew this past year to thirteen (13) teams with the addition of Women's Lacrosse, Men's Golf, Men's Curling and Women's Curling.

In such a very short time UOIT has established itself as a top-flight university in Canada as well as a school that boasts top-flight varsity programs. We are extremely proud of all our Ridgeback student-athletes, coaches, team staff, and supporters as we complete the fifth season of OUA and CIS competition. In doing so our teams continued to move forward and establish new high marks including play-off contention and OUA Championship success. I am very confident that this success will continue to rise with the top calibre of coaches we have in place along with the top calibre student-athletes committed to our programs. UOIT Varsity Athletics is a special thing unlike any other and it contributes greatly to our campus and overall student experience, as well as generating significant profile for the university locally, provincially and nationally. Once you are a Ridgeback you will always be a RIdgeback. It is all about team at UOIT and the tradition of success built on hard work and training will prove to be the key ingredient in reaching the ultimate goals on the OUA and CIS sports stage. Not to mention the other new sports we anticipate planning and hope to add in the future.

We hope you enjoy the pages that follow outlining and profiling each of our varsity teams as well as the many individual and team accomplishments recorded during the 2011-12 season.

Lastly if you are a graduating Ridgeback this spring we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours and hope that you will support the Ridgebacks Alumni initiatives. If you are a returning student-athlete we wish you an enjoyable summer and we will look forward to seeing you in the fall for another exciting Ridgebacks season. Sincerely,

Ken Babcock Director of Athletics University of Ontario Institute of Technology
