YEAR 5 - APPRENTICES
The MArch program is designed to help students develop an architect’s critical and creative thinking to push their imagination past the boundaries.
These students have completed their first year of master’s in architecture whilst working full time, which alone is an outstanding achievement. Being pushed to excel both in university and at work, the specific program allows students to be in an intellectually stimulating environment where they constantly have to adapt.
This academic year, the students carried out the research of their choice, which tended to support the work done in their practices. They also completed their design studio module, based in London or Nottingham and, alongside this completed technical reports.
Each student has excelled this year and has found a balance between the working and studying life.

SCULPTURE IN ARCHITECTURE
Students took part in a clay modelling workshop led by Rodney Harris. As a professional sculptor, Harris has been commissioned to design many public sculptures which manipulate the relief of brickwork. The workshop began with a series of exercises which invited students to explore the capabilities and test the limits of the clay medium. This included moulding an elephant behind their backs, building the tallest clay tower in small teams, and sculpting a place they would like to visit. Following this, students explored the memory and iconography of their site or building, turning this into a piece of sculpture which would be proposed as part of their studio scheme.

THE WASTE LAB CENTRE
The UK is under increasing pressures to find new ways of recycling waste and the push for a circular economy has never been stronger.
Therefore the Waste Lab Centre will partner with the local Southwark waste facility to embed circular principles in the local economy. It is intended the the centre will be an innovative hub for collecting, sorting, re-making and selling products that would otherwise be sent to landfill. Interactive workshops and exhbitions will also be hosted to educate the community about their role in creating a successful circular enconomy.

SKATE HOUSING - SNEINTON, NOTTINGHAM
Normative living arrangements have become basic & insular due to housing demand - SKATE HOUSING questions this as the first affordable housing scheme designed for an urban skate community. It offers long leases on 9 Council owned homes and sets rents below market rates; in exchange, skaters contribute their time, working within the schemes flexible programme to benefit local people. A residential block, urban-street and community centre are arranged around an elongated central courtyard/street skate park. For dynamic and permeable space, Compression x Redaction was the key conceptual device.
