A First Year’s Guide

WELCOME TO NOTTS!

MEET YOUR COMMITTEE…

Nottingham MedSoc is an all inclusive student run union that every medical student here in Nottingham is automatically part of. It is designed to support medical students of all years in making the most of their time at university. Whether it be providing extra support and tutoring for students who are struggling academically, or putting on the best socials the university has to offer (NOTE: Medic's Cocktail Party is COMING!!), MedSoc is here to support YOU!

COMMITTEE CONTINUED…

YEAR REPS ST 1ST YEAR REP

Could be you??!

3RD YEAR REP

Mark "Hands" Burnett is a loveable guy always happy to help! Whether he's showing off his skimpy shorts on the dance floor of Ocean or his dodgy shoulders on the rugby pitch, Mark is always up for a laugh! He's the perfect choice for 3rd year Rep as his distinctive Ilkley accent can be recognised by everyone, and his ice cream making skills are also perfect for brightening up any dissertation blues!

2ND YEAR REPS

This cheeky chappy loved MedSoc so much the first time he’s back for a second year! Often seen performing stunts in his gymnastics sessions, Talkeen is equally nimble on the dance floor, pulling spectacular moves in Ocean. A confident presence around the med school, seemingly everywhere and involved in everything. This young man is about as keen as you can get – it’s even in the name! You’ll see a lot of Luke at the beginning of the year; whether he’s doing shout-outs in your lectures or swinging his shirt around in medics corner of Ocean. Born and raised in Milton Keynes, Luke is a real life Action Man. He is a keen surfer, traveller and musician (he sings AND plays guitar!). Luke loves fancy dress with previous costumes including roman soldier, cowboy and zombie. Look out for him tearing up the dance floors of Ocean, Oceana and Crisis next year!

4TH YEAR REP

Basketball legend and gym fanatic Cam is a MedSoc veteran. Having been our Sports Sec last year he’s returned to be our 4th year rep. Often found in riding the waves in Ocean this super keen medic has done it all being an ex-karni rep and overall keen medic BNIM (Big Name In Medschool), there is no-one better to add experience to this year’s committee.

5TH YEAR REP

Despite being a medic elder, Izzy sure knows how to maintain her fun and crazy lifestyle. When she's not busy spending time on clinical placements, Izzy will be there to bring the banter! Having once accidentally booked a holiday to Belgium after a night out who knows what spontaneity this troublemaker could have in store for MedSoc!

WELCOME WEEK

21st – 25th September 2015 Your first week – Welcome Week – is amazing, and so is being a Medic, so Medic Welcome Week should be incredible! There’s loads going on for everyone to get involved in, like the Welcome Festival on University Park where you can sign up for sports and societies or join a volunteering group, and of course the legendary nights out! Welcome Week is the warm up to what should be an amazing first year of Medical School for you with Cocktail Party, Meet Your Family and many other fantastic events.

Welcome Mentors

Keep your eyes out for our QMC Welcome Mentors, they’ll be easy to spot in B Floor Café and on A Floor outside LT1 in their colourful t-shirts. Come and introduce yourself to them, have a chat, and ask them any questions you have during Welcome Week. It’s their job to get to know you and look out for you – they want to make sure you have the best possible first week! Your lead Welcome Mentor is Joe Heath and he and his team are really looking forward to welcoming you to Nottingham in September! QMC Welcome Mentors include: Clare Allen, Alex Gibson, Sophie Hammond, Anna Larvin, Claire Mulvenna, Hayat Nadama and Hannah Saunders.

Walking Bus

There will also be some friendly second years waiting to walk you to the QMC from your halls on the first Monday so look out for them – you’ll find out more about this before term starts! WELFARE Dear Future 1st Years, Welcome to Notts Medical School! Supporting all students through the five years of medical school is one of MedSoc’s main aims. Medical school is lots of fun but can be a challenge at times. The phrase “work hard, play hard” is certainly applicable to most medics! For when times get a bit tough there are plenty of people in and around the medical school to help you out.

Welfare Website

Once you’ve got your head around moodle (I promise it’s not as tricky as it looks!) you’ll notice the Student Welfare and Support area. Here you can read personal stories about lots of problems that students encounter at university. There’s also lots of information about who you can go to for help within the medical school, within the university and also plenty of external resources.

Nightline Nightline is a student-run confidential listening service who offer telephone, email and instant messenger support. Keep an eye out for the Nightline Bear out and about – particularly in Ocean on a Friday night! www.nottinghamnightline.co.uk www.studentminds.org.uk

Tutors

I hope you have lots of fun, learn a bit, ask for help and always remember the immortal words of the Baywatch song which you’ll learn to love after spending your Friday nights in the Big O…

I’ll be ready (I’ll be ready) Never you fear (no don’t you fear) I’ll be ready Forever and always I’m always here. (Seriously I am – get in touch anytime) MedSoc Love, Mouse Barnes x

MEDICS KARNI Hello and welcome to Medics Karni!

Karnival is the largest student-run charity organization in the UK, hosting events mainly for first years and raising money for a huge number of charities. We will host several events throughout your first term, making it as action-packed, stress free and, most of all, memorable as possible. From balls to bar crawls, rag raids to sky dives and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, there’s something for everyone to get involved with. But what is a ‘rag raid’? Whilst at other universities Saturdays may be seen as time to catch up on sleep or recover from the night before, at Nottingham they mean only one thing - rag raid time. Every Saturday of your first term, we will journey to the big cities around the UK, wearing in all manner of fancy dress. After a day of doing good, collecting money for charity, you will be well rewarded for your hard work - and what’s a better reward than a bus journey home complete with challenges, prizes and a few other surprises! These bus journeys are definitely not to be missed! On our return to our beloved city the party carries on at one of our favorite venues well into the night. Last year Karnival raised over 1.7 million pounds for charity and we hope to do just as well - if not better - this year!

MEET YOUR KARNI REPS. . . Voted best hair in Karni (according to himself) George is guaranteed to make you laugh no matter the situation. This member of Broadgate Park royalty has a talent for all things Karni, from raising money to thinking of new and 'creative' ways to make a rag more entertaining. While he won't be drinking anyone under the table this year, George knows how to have a good time and if you get a seat near him on the bus, you won't regret it.

Sofia (don't spell it with a ph) is a charmingly unique combination of cuddly and mad. Her easygoing, fun-loving nature is something medics Karni couldn't do without, all topped off with her oh-so-close-to-edgy look that she continues to work on. You'd be hard pressed to find a lovelier gal on any rag bus, but arm her with a bottle of VK and some home brewed Karni love and watch her make any night out one to remember.

Charlie Pullin is known for many things. To some he is a mad enthusiastic member of the medics rugby team, for others he is the person who shaved his head like a monk for charity, however for most he’s the guy they got with that one time in Ocean. However crazy he may come across, Charlie is an important member of the medics karni team. His cross dressing skills have allowed him to become the ultimate street collector, persuading even the stingiest members of the general public to part with their cash. Although Charlie may come across a little on the wild side, he truly is a fun-loving soul who will try his utmost to give every single person on the bus, the best time on rag.

Medics Karni is full of blondes this year, and none more so than Beti Garside (yes with an i). No one has a bad word to say about her and whether it's a Crisis all nighter or slightly inappropriate Ocean Baywatch this is a face you're going to see a lot of in the first year. Very much the mother hen of the group Beti is the sweetest most supportive person in medicine, whilst also being the wildest you'll find on a rag bus. Confident, funny; you couldn't ask for a better rep to look after you, she's one to look out for!

Michael Stackhouse. Rock of the Karni team. This powerhouse of a man will stop at nothing to further the Karni cause, but behind the exterior of a shrewd businessman and philanthropist lies a soft, cuddly centre that rivals any teddy bear. He's who we come to if we ever need someone to help us out and he's the perfect bloke to turn to if you need a hand with anything Karni or Medicine related. Where the hell is Stackhouse? I'll tell you where, he's in our hearts forever.

Loyal, feisty, dependable and mad, could we be talking about anyone but Eleanor Plews? Known not only for her close, if paradoxical involvement with both the Christian society and BlowSOC, this blonde bombshell is the beating heart of the Medics Karni team. It's safe to say that nothing would get done without her. Eleanor is someone who'll help you with anything, she'll make your night twice what it would have been, and you'll have made friends with the best that Karni have to offer.

MEDIC SPORTS SPORTS TEAMS TEAMS MEDIC Medics are always over-achievers in all aspects of life, including sport. Unfortunately, due to our ‘fun’ packed timetable, our elite sportsmen and women always struggle to find time to play for the university teams meaning our MedSoc teams are always of a very high standard. MedSoc sports teams participate in the national (NAMS) league and university (IMS) league and training fits in with our jam-packed lifestyles. As well as playing in the leagues, a varsity series has been set up with the Leicester medics, which we are hoping to expand this year. The sports that MedSoc has to offer include: Badminton, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cricket, Cross Country, Cycling, Football (men’s & women’s), Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Volleyball, Squash and Tennis. If we don’t have already have your sport, feel free to come and speak to us and we can see what we can do! Although we can get quite serious on the pitch, we all know how to have a great time off it. We have many team socials throughout the year and are aiming to have even bigger, better socials this year. The highlight of every year is alumni; a day of student verses doctor matches, followed by a huge social in the evening, usually combining many of our teams. This is not a night to be missed!

BASKETBALL

Medics Basketball is a society that welcomes players of all abilities, whether you played regularly for your school team, or you’re a beginner, come along to our training sessions on a Wednesday evening. Training usually consists casual practice matches against each other, and for the more serious players we participate in the IMS league every Sunday during term time, and NAMS twice a year.

FOOTBALL

Nottingham University Medics Football Club (NUMFC to our friends) is the greatest club in the world. We have three teams of all abilities, comprising both students and doctors, who play on the weekends as well as training every Wednesday. Every year we take part in the NAMS tournament which features medical schools from all over the country and NUMFC have won it twice in the last four years. In the autumn term there is a students against doctors game followed by a big night out. The club’s tour takes place every December to a location that is not disclosed until you get to the airport (previous tours have included Madrid and Milan). So for anyone who loves socials, chants, club ties or just playing football, we have only one rule: Adepto Adigo (get involved).

RUGBY

Nottingham Medics RUFC is a friendly, welcoming club, which has enjoyed a number of recent tournament successes on the field, coupled with a strong social feel off it. There is a great history at the club, a history you are welcome to be part of. We train at Casuals RUFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. We are always on the lookout for more players and anyone interested should contact us.

NETBALL

Nottingham University Medics Netball Club (NUMNC) is a very friendly and social club. We train on Monday evenings and welcome players of all abilities with a consistently high intake of first years. NUMNC enter teams into NAMS and IMS leagues, both played on weekends. We have been hugely successful in both tournaments particularly within the last couple of years, winning IMS and reaching NAMS finals last season. As well as having great teams and fun training sessions, we have plenty of socials, which are not to be missed! Feel free to come along to try it out! Our lovely committee can’t wait to meet you!

TENNIS

Tennis is a popularly sport among medics, with over 100 members of varying abilities, we offer weekly sessions to help improve and build confidence in our players so that they take part in fixtures - a great way to meet new people. SO, INSPIRED BY WIMBLEDON? Take inspiration one step further and join our Medics Tennis club. You are guaranteed to have a good time!

VOLLEYBALL Medics Volleyball is a casual and fun medic sports club that partake in the university's intramural sports league, playing games weekly. We accommodate a wide range of abilities, but no prior experience is necessary to join. Perfect for beginners wanting to learn a new sport! We're a relaxed club with a great vibe - a perfect combination of sport and fun!

CHEERLEADING

Medics Cheerleading is a fun, sociable and relaxed society that meets for a couple of hours a week. We learn several routines of dancing and lifts throughout the year, do two performances and enjoy regular socials. No previous experience is required and we love getting new members. It’s a great opportunity to meet medics in your and other year groups. The main focus of the society is on socialising, fun and enjoyment. We guarantee that if you come along to one of our sessions you will have a great time and meet some lovely people!
