Practice areas include: charity and community, commercial property, corporate, disputes, employment, family, financial services, heritage, intellectual property and commercial, international private client, media disputes, residential property, rural property, sponsorship, sport and tax.

The training programme involves each trainee in the widest range of cases, clients and issues possible in a single law firm, taking full advantage of the wide range of practice areas by offering six seats, rather than the more usual four. This provides a broad foundation of knowledge and experience and the opportunity to make an informed choice about the area of law in which to specialize. A high degree of involvement is encouraged under the direct supervision of associates and partners.

We have one client: the British Government. Whether the government is creating new legislation, procuring goods and services, employing people or defending its decisions in court, it needs significant levels of legal advice. To carry out this work, the government needs its own lawyers who understand its business. GLS lawyers advise ministers and officials on their powers and responsibilities to litigate on their behalf and ensure that official decisions comply with the law. Our lawyers’ work will be determined by the business in which their departments are engaged

but will typically involve the widest possible range of public and private law matters. These range across issues of national and international significance and across public and private law, embracing advisory and legislative work, litigation and prosecution and a wealth of specialist areas.

The broad structure of a GLS training contract or pupillage is similar to that elsewhere. The nature of the work you will undertake during the training period and the level of responsibility you will be given is beyond comparison.
