Welcome to the Law Fair It is great to see you at this year’s Law Fair. With more than 70 firms attending, you can find out about a wide range of legal practice areas and sector opportunities with local, regional, national and international firms. Many of the firms attending will have work placements, open days, insight events and training contracts available. Here are some ways in which you can make the most of the fair.
As well as law firms attending, representatives from course providers will have information about the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), the LPC and the BPTC. They can also tell you about the destinations of students who undertake their courses and the employment they have secured on completion, for example paralegal, trainee solicitor and pupil barrister. This will be particularly helpful to those of you who do not secure a pupillage or training contract prior to commencing the courses.
If you are thinking about a career in law, then some background research on the firms and what they do will help you get much more out of the day. A little research goes a long way and will make it easier for you to decide whether or not the firm is right for you.
In addition to the information provided by law firms and legal education providers, you will also be able to collect your personal copies of legal directories at the fair such as Chambers Student Guide and the Training Contract & Pupillage Handbook.
When talking to representatives, be confident, smile, shake hands and make eye contact. Be yourself and don’t waffle, have some purposeful questions to ask. If you can’t think of any right now, these questions will help you get the conversation going:
And after the fair, what next? Remember, we the Careers and Employability Service do much more than organise events like this; we are also here to help you with your ideas, plans and applications, even if you are not sure what you want to do next. If you would like to talk to us, then book an appointment at www.nottingham.ac.uk/careers/appointments

Anthony Collins Solicitors is a great choice if you’re looking to join a principled firm and want to take the lead on high quality work. We are committed to helping you develop and succeed as a trainee, and we provide the support and resources to help you achieve your potential. You’ll be allocated an appraiser at the start of your training contract, as well as a trainee manager for each seat. Your appraiser will offer support and guidance about which areas would complement your plans for the future, making sure you gain the necessary experience and skills.
When we asked our trainees why they chose ACS over other firms, they told us it was because of our excellent client care and because we have a social conscience and are actually prepared to do something about it. They also said they were given more hands-on experience and considerably more responsibility than their peers at other firms.
• A good work/life balance. • The approachability of senior colleagues, including partners. www.anthonycollins.com
We asked what they considered to be the firm’s best features, and these are some of their responses: • the chance to do high-level commercial work in one seat and publicly-funded private client work in another.

We have one client: the British Government. Whether the Government is creating new legislation, procuring goods and services, employing people or defending its decisions in court, it needs significant levels of legal advice. To carry out this work, the Government needs its own lawyers who understand its business. The Government Legal Service (GLS) comprises 2,000 lawyers working in the legal teams of 30 Departments of State and other Government organisations. GLS lawyers advise Ministers and officials on their powers and responsibilities to litigate on their behalf and ensure that official decisions comply with the law.
Our lawyers’ work will be determined by the business in which their departments are engaged but will typically involve the widest possible range of public and private law matters. These range across issues of national and international significance and across public and private law, embracing advisory and legislative work, litigation and prosecution and a wealth of specialist areas. The GLS legal trainee scheme offers you the chance to conduct your training contract or pupillage in a government department. The broad structure of a GLS training contract or pupillage is similar to that elsewhere. The nature of the work you will undertake during the training period
and the level of responsibility you will be given is beyond comparison. www.gov.uk/gls
