Student and alumni profiles Polina Medvedeva

BA International Media and Communication Studies, third year My name is Polina. I was born in Moscow, Russia, where after graduation from a Spanish school I have started my studies at Moscow State University. I did two years of a bachelor programme in Spanish Philology. However, I then decided to change course and got accepted by The University of Nottingham. That’s exactly when I was able to complete my dream and become ‘international’, partly thanks to my course of international media and communication in the Department of Culture, Film and Media, and partly thanks to the unique international-friendly atmosphere at our University. I therefore speak four languages: Russian, English, Spanish and French. I also aim to learn Hebrew and Italian later in my life. As for my extracurricular activities, I was a course representative last year and now I’m on the committee of the Creative Student Network (CSN). I adore singing, art, big cities and travel.

Roneeta Gupta

BA Economics, graduated 2013 Business analyst, Accenture Studying at The University of Nottingham was undoubtedly the best experience of my life! I believed that I could design the pathway for my experience of studying 4,500 miles away from home. Consequently, I was involved with all societies that I was interested in, later streamlining to ones which would benefit me from a career perspective.

04

I tried to actively participate in every company event that I could attend. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak to leaders from different industries. I also had a part-time job and was on a committee for one of the societies. Additionally, I was involved in training the committees at the Students’ Union along with participating in the Nottingham Advantage Award and taking advantage of the international experience.

Dr Pierre-Alexis Mével

PhD French and Francophone Studies, graduated 2011 Lecturer, School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies I’m currently a lecturer in translation studies at The University of Nottingham, and launched a new MA in Translation Studies in 2012. I teach (among other things) translation theory and audiovisual translation at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. My experience as a freelance translator working with both subtitles and websites has given me solid foundations in audiovisual translation, and I completed my doctoral thesis at The University of Nottingham in 2011. I also hold an MA by research (The University of Nottingham, 2007) and a PGCE (University of Leicester). I have a particular interest in the representations of non-standard varieties on screen, and on the theoretical underpinnings of juxtaposing two linguistic varieties in films. My latest project involves using a narrative theory framework, in order to analyse the cross-cultural dynamics of representations of Otherness in a corpus of multilingual films.
