THE GRADUATION CEREMONY THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE FANFARES In mid-1994, staff and students of the University’s Faculty of Music were invited to submit entries for a competition to compose the University Fanfares. The composition had to be capable of being performed either on organ or on brass. The winning entry by Professor Robert Constable, was first played publicly at the University’s overseas graduation ceremony held in Singapore in August 1994. The Fanfares are performed at all ceremonial functions to herald the entry and departure of the Chancellor and other members of the Council. HONOURS The award of Honours is given to students who complete an additional year of study after the completion of a bachelor’s degree. Some bachelor’s degrees, such as engineering or education, have Honours embedded in the four year degree program. An Honours year generally consists of part coursework and part research requiring submission of a thesis. Honours can be awarded as Class I, Class II Division I, Class II Division II, or Class III. WITH DISTINCTION A bachelor or master degree is conferred with distinction in cases where a candidate has achieved a Grade Point Average of 6.0 or above in the degree, out of a maximum of 7.0. COMBINED DEGREE A combined degree is one where a student studies for two separate degrees at the same time. It is possible for the student to complete the degree requirements for one degree ahead of the other. The student receives a testamur for each degree. Places for combined degrees are very competitive and offered to the highest performing students who apply.

OCCASIONAL SPEAKER Dr Allen Cheung Wai-lun Dr Allen Cheung Wai-lun is Director of Cluster Services at Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority, the statutory body managing all public hospitals in Hong Kong. Dr Cheung’s major responsibilities include overseeing cross-cluster coordination and performance, reviewing drug standardisation and utilisation policies, as well as ensuring optimal business support services across the Hospital Authority’s hospitals and specialist clinics. Dr Cheung also oversees the Authority’s medical, nursing and allied health grades management and development. Since taking on his role in 2005, Dr Cheung has been active in equipping the Hospital Authority to meet the modern needs of the vibrant Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Under his leadership, the Hospital Authority has pioneered a public-private partnership project that offers more choices to patients. The project is in line with the Hong Kong Government’s strategy for healthcare reform and has led to an overall improvement in service quality. The project has helped improve the region’s response to infectious diseases such as SARS and Avian Flu - an area of special interest for Dr Cheung, an expert in emergency medicine whose advice and expertise was sought across Asia after the devastating SARS outbreak that gripped the region in 2003. Dr Cheung shares his extensive healthcare management experience with several government committees concerned with reform, peak industry bodies, and community projects that help improve Hong Kong citizens’ access to healthcare. A University of Hong Kong graduate of the combined Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, Dr Cheung started his clinical career in 1981 at Queen Mary Hospital. He has since held a number of senior medical positions at public hospitals in Hong Kong. Dr Cheung is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Community Medicine), the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Emergency Medicine), the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Surgery), and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Accident and Emergency), UK. In 2009, Dr Cheung was awarded the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
