TIERRA SMITHSON Political Science '22
While I left my home community of Sparks, Nevada to come to Pacific, I have quickly found a new home in the Speech and Debate team. When I tell people I’m on the Forensics team, they usually ask if I like to argue. I always laugh, because while the intellectual challenge is something I enjoy (and feeling a little more prepared for class presentations), I am most appreciative of my teammates. The topics we grapple with can be extremely personal and having understanding people around provides a comfortable and accepting space to explore difficult topics. We spend an enormous amount of time together each week and work almost non-stop on the weekends for tournaments, so it truly takes dedication and trust in each other that things will work out. With COVID-19 and our tournaments transitioning online this semester, the long days competing virtually has meant redefining what it means to be “together.” One of the worries in an activity like Forensics, which centers on public speaking and in-person interaction, is that there will be less engagement with and accessibility to each other. But despite those concerns, the Speech and Debate community is rising above. This semester is unconventional, but what I’ve learned so far is that our support for each other and the commitment to the activity, is larger than the obstacles COVID-19 has posed. I’m excited for the rest of the year and am so thankful for this team that has become my family.
Choosing Pacific was a very easy choice for me. The small class sizes, unique programs at the School of International Studies, and abundance of student organizations & activities surpassed my expectations. I have become a part of multiple organizations and severed in several leadership positions. These leadership opportunities have not only helped me grow as an adult and boosted my self-confidence, but they have provided me with invaluable career skills that I can use along side the knowledge I’ve gained in my academics. In both my social sorority and co-ed service fraternity, I have gained a strong support-system and life-long friendships. After this difficult semester for everyone, I want to applaud you all for your accomplishments this semester, whether they be big or small, and hope that you make the most out of virtual learning!
