Welcome
Welcome to the University of Portsmouth’s Graduate Recruitment and Placement Fair 2014. The Graduate Recruitment and Placement Fair is a great way to meet a variety of potential employers and gather information about the graduate and work experience opportunities they have. Your aim for the day should be to make a positive impression on anyone you meet by sounding confident and asking intelligent questions. If you are not sure how to approach an employer or what type of questions to ask, then our team are on hand to assist you with your fair-related queries. There will also be a range of sessions to help you with your graduate job search in the Portsmouth Room (upstairs in Guildhall).
Top tips
Tips for making the most of the Fair 1. Read the guide!
Reading the guide can avoid questions like ‘what does your company do?’ and will prevent you wandering aimlessly. Use the guide to prioritise which organisations you want to visit.
2. Identify your own priorities.
Although you may be with a group of friends, you will get much more from the fair if you approach employers individually. What do you want to know… Skills? Recruitment processes? Work areas? Training and development?
3. Check your appearance.
You are meeting potential employers so ensure you are presenting the best version of yourself. Be mindful of any overpowering smells such as tobacco smoke or very strong perfume, and remember that a smile goes a long way.
6. Don’t be pushy or monopolise the employer.
7. Take notes.
Be enthusiastic, friendly and polite. Use this opportunity to practice your networking skills. Even if you are feeling nervous, try to be confident in your approach and handshake. You could prepare a very brief ‘pitch’ so you have in mind what you want to say.
5. Ask the right questions.
Make a positive impression and prepare questions to ask the employers. If you are unsure about what questions to ask, pick up a prompt sheet from Purple Door.
Making a note of people’s names and key points after discussions will ensure you remember the important information, and will enable you to follow up with organisations later.
8. Busy stands.
If there are queues to speak to employers, don’t give up. Wait patiently or go back at a quieter time.
9. Purple Door.
4. Get stuck in.
Be aware of your fellow students and take time to listen to the employer’s advice. It isn’t about getting a job today; it’s about making contacts and finding out information to help you make the right choices.
Use the Purple Door support available today. If you haven’t found what you were looking for, ask us; we have a large team of friendly advisers on hand to help you on stand S4.
10. After the Fair, take action.
Reflect on what you have learnt, update your CV, work on your LinkedIn profile, research other options or organisations that you found out about, or make an application. If you do nothing, you might regret it.
