Why Volunteer? 1332

In the last academic year students were recorded as volunteering by the Careers and Employability Service. In 2016 Deloitte conducted an Impact Survey which looks at developing leadership skills through volunteering, they found “

82%

of respondents said they would be more likely to choose a candidate with volunteer experience on their CV” Deloitte Volunteer Impact Survey 2016 ‘The experience has helped me improve my writing and communication skills and has also helped me adapt to the professional work environment I will be faced with daily after university. It has definitely been a beneficial experience, I found that my confidence has improved and my CV is a lot more appealing. A lot of the job role and responsibilities matched the required criteria for placements.’ - Second year English Literature student

Welcome to the Volunteering Fair 2017! The Careers and Employability Service recorded over 1300 students as volunteering or completing work experience in the third sector last year, and we have started the current academic year with over 200 volunteering roles for you to choose from. Today we have 45 organisations here to talk to you about the skills you can gain by volunteering with them, along with Careers Advisers situated at the Advice and Application Zone to help you choose the best role for you. The University of Portsmouth continues to value volunteering as a career enhancing activity and our current strategy requires that, by 2020 all of you are undertaking a career enhancing activity to help boost your CV in preparation for the graduate labour market. Equally employers continue to value volunteering too. In a recent article on Reed.co.uk detailing ‘What Graduate Employers Really Want’, readers were advised ‘with almost all graduate roles attracting thousands of qualified university leavers, candidates need to stand out from the crowd in any way they can. This is where voluntary work, internships and other work experience comes in handy. Not only will it show your enthusiasm and drive, it’ll also make you that bit different from everyone else with the same degree as you.’ Each year 400,000 students graduate from their courses – volunteering is the perfect way to develop skills and experience to make your job applications stand out from the crowd! So don’t leave it too late – whether you choose to volunteer to help with your career direction, gain specific skills, build self-confidence, add career-relevant experience to your CV, give back to the community, gain a professional reference or because it is a cause that is personal to you and your family, just do it, and see what a difference it makes to you and your future. Finally, if you feel you haven’t seen anything relevant today, then come and visit the Volunteering Team at the Purple Door stand. We love nothing better than a challenge and are confident we can find a role that will work for you.

Happy hunting and enjoy! Jane, Courteney and Rachel The Volunteering Team at the Careers and Employability Service

FIVE TOP TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE FAIR! Do your research

Information on all the organisations and volunteer roles available today are listed in this booklet, so take a seat in the Advice and Application Zone and research the opportunities on offer.

Be open-minded Many organisations are looking for volunteers to support a range of their functions, so make the most of today and speak to as many stands as you can – some of them may just surprise you!

Think about your pitch Charities will want to know about you too! Reflect on what skills, experience and knowledge you have to offer, this could be from your course, work experience or social activities.

If you see something interesting – apply! Applying to volunteering roles is a competitive process, so strike whilst the iron’s hot. There is a post box for completed forms in the Advice and Application Zone or you can drop them into the Careers and Employability Service after the fair.

Use appropriate references Your application won’t be sent without them. Most commonly, students use a previous employer or university/college teacher. Take the time to get their permission and check their contact details to prevent any delays with your application. If you have any questions, come speak to a member of the Volunteering Team on the the Careers and Employability Service stand or a Careers Adviser in the Advice and Application Zone. We’re here to help!
