UOW PHYSICS ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2014
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL Physics was a foundation department of the University of Wollongong in 1975 and the School of Physics today is one of six Schools within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS) at UOW where physics is core to all the EIS disciplines (http://eis.uow.edu.au/physics/index. html). The lean School of Physics has the smallest academic staff complement (13 in 2015) in EIS, being one-third to one-half the size of other EIS Schools. Undergraduate and postgraduate students very actively participate in many aspects of the School of Physics’ academic activities through the UOW Physics Society (http://unicentre.uow.edu.au/unilife/clubs/UOW095498.html). The degree programs currently offered by the School include undergraduate with end-on and integrated Honours, Masters by coursework and research (Master of Philosophy), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). All of the undergraduate degrees are accredited by the Australian Institute of Physics. The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine have accredited all of the medical physics related undergraduate and postgraduate degrees on offer. The School of Physics has a highly visible and robust teaching program (http://coursefinder.uow.edu.au/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=UOW_Main) that adapts to both internal and external changes in the student environment and cohort. From a teaching perspective, the School aims to facilitate a greater awareness and engagement of society in physical science through continued exploration, development and usage of human and technological capacity for the benefit of its region, the nation and the international community. Our prize-winning teachers have a demonstrated track record of enthusiasm and active involvement in the development and running of new teaching and course initiatives within and outside EIS, supported by internal and external educational grants and published in peer-reviewed literature. The School of Physics provides high quality, hands-on education and training for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of Physics, Photonics and Medical Physics. In addition, the School undertakes significant service teaching for the Bachelor of Engineering in the first year and has a large number of students enrolled in subjects of general physics in areas of Astronomy, Environmental Physics, Biophysics and more recently Energy Systems. These attract students from all University Disciplines demonstrating that our tight internal integration does not preclude wide interaction.
Physics research areas are Medical Radiation Physics contained in the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP - http://eis.uow.edu.au/cmrp/index. html) and Condensed Matter Physics, a main campus sub-group of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM - http://isem.uow. edu.au/index.html) with an emphasis on terahertz science and technology, superconductivity and magnetism, and thin film technology. Since 2012 our postgraduate numbers (MSc & PhD) have continued to grow and in 2015 we have a higher degree research (HDR) equivalent full-time student load (EFTSL) of 78. The School has been able to maintain its research income over the last three years, at approximately $2 million dollars per year. The high number of NHMRC funding dollars brought into the Faculty through CMRP research is of particular noteworthiness as this is the most NHMRC grants attracted by any research unit within the University of Wollongong. In terms of publications per staff member the School is one of the highest in the Faculty. The most recent Australian Research Council’s (ARCs) Excellence in Research Assessment (ERA) results from 2012 indicate that the School’s research is at or above international levels, with Medical Radiation Physics having a ranking of 4 (out of 5) which is the highest rank in the country for Other Physical Sciences field of research code (0299 FOR) while the Condensed Matter (0204 FOR) group had a ranking of 3 and contributed significantly to the 5 in Materials Engineering (0912 FOR). Such recognition is achieved through our active engagement with a significant network of local, national and international industry partnerships and collaborations that continues to grow every year. The vision for the School of Physics is to enhance its position as an internationally recognised, research-focussed School with an international reputation for high quality, innovative and student-centred undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs. I believe that this report demonstrates that the School of Physics is well on track to achieve this vision and hope you agree with me. I personally would like to thank each of the academic and support (technical, professional and administrative) staff whose continued effort and professionalism combine to not only make the School very viable unit, but also a most enjoyable workplace environment. I am very proud of the School’s achievements and feel very honoured to lead such a dedicated team of people.

IN MEMORY OF DOCTOR DAVID MARTIN For over 35 years Dr David Martin devoted himself to instilling a sense of rigour, and respect for evidence and reason, in his students. His life was devoted to the study of physics, and sharing the understanding gained through that study with others. For many of the students who studied physics at the University of Wollongong he epitomised what it meant to think like a scientist. David’s idea of time well spent was a lengthy discussion with a student or colleague on some aspect of physics, and he excelled in helping others find flaws in their reasoning and weaknesses in their understanding of subtle concepts. In 1970s Dave was the first person to carry out spectroscopic measurements at liquid helium temperatures at UOW. Using cryogenic and far-infrared spectroscopic equipment that he had assembled from components that Prof. Peter Fisher (a former Head of Physics at UOW) had shipped over from his laboratory in USA. David also developed customized computerized digital data acquisition and processing for the system at a time when this was not routine (as it is today). The measurements were the first comprehensive quantitative ones on hydrogenic acceptors and donors under uniaxial stress in semiconductors. Of course the research was under the guidance and instigation of Professor Fisher and Dr Phil Simmonds (a retired academic from Physics at UOW), but Dave carried a great deal of the work in these early stages. This work hence launched what developed into the major line of research investigation in Physics Department for many years. Dave earned some prominence in the field of low-dimensional semiconductors physics and devices. Using a clever electronic technique he was the first anywhere to trace out directly the full current-voltage characteristic in the bistable overhang region of the quantum mechanical tunnelling resonance observed in some semiconductor double barrier structures. The devices were specially designed (elsewhere, in a collaboration) to exhibit enhanced bistability in the resonance region at low (at and below liquid nitrogen) temperatures. The technique allowed us to study previously hidden tunnelling characteristics pointing to some interesting physics, especially in high magnetic fields. To quote Prof. Laurence Eaves, an internationally renowned leader in this field of research from Nottingham University, UK “His work on the voltage overhang in the RTDs (resonant tunnelling diodes) involved a brilliant idea and a great deal of technological skill – a tour de force, which is still being cited”. 13

RESEARCH STUDENT PROFILES Maegan Gargett Maegan completed her Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics Advanced (Class 1 Honours) at the University of Wollongong in 2012, and is currently undertaking a PhD in the field of radiation oncology medical physics. Her project is conducted at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics, under the supervision of Professor Peter Metcalfe and Professor Anatoly Rozenfeld and involves collaboration with Dr Brad Oborn at the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre as well as medical physics personnel at the Ingham Institute of Applied Medical Research. Maegan’s research is guided by the MRI-linac facility currently under construction at the Ingham Institute, Sydney. One of just a handful of such prototypes worldwide, it combines magnetic resonance imaging and external beam radiation delivery in one hybrid machine. The aim of the system is to provide real time imaging with superior soft tissue contrast during cancer treatments. This, in turn, should improve treatment outcomes for patients by maximising the precision of tumour targeting and minimising healthy tissue damage. Her role in the project involves researching detectors developed by the CMRP for use at the facility, as current detector technology lacks accuracy when measuring radiation dose in the presence of a magnetic field. So far, Maegan’s project has focused on using Monte Carlo simulations to investigate possible irregularities in the dose response of a silicon array detector due to the presence of magnetic fields.

COLOMBO PLAN VISIT TO JAPAN Japan Student Research Trip Review
On arrival we immediately immersed in the Japanese culture and saw many novelties unique to Japan such as coffee vending machines, strange fashions, even stranger foods and extremely animated advertisements. We were introduced to the National Institute of Radiological Science facilities at Chiba and given a tour of the charged particle accelerator and the neighbouring treatment facilities for various tumours using the latest technology. We were also provided with presentations on the fundamentals and technologies behind the heavy ion and proton research and treatment modalities which was a great way to reinforce what we had seen and consider current research in the field.
Amongst our studies we also were given the opportunity to tour Tokyo and take in many cultural sites and experiences such as getting our fortunes read at the high temple, appreciating the dedication and design of the grave sites in the city, learning about Japan’s history at the museum, appreciating the architecture of the Imperial Palace and getting a birds-eye view of the city.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
In September 2014, 10 students studying medical radiation physics at the University of Wollongong were given the opportunity to visit Japan. The trip allowed us to experience another culture, meet new people and develop a greater understanding of the potential future directions of cancer treatment overseas and in Australia. We came from a variety of learning levels ranging from 1st year physics to 3rd year, all with the motivation to learn something new about the upcoming heavy ion and proton therapy treatment and for some of us, this was our first time overseas.
Then travelling to Gunma we saw more clinical applications of heavy ion therapy and proton therapy and their treatment facilities there as well as getting pampered at a natural hot spring.
Overall, the short week in Japan was a great way to learn about heavy ion and proton therapy, as we could understand the physics and its application through our own experience of it. The trip also was extremely enriching and very eye opening in terms of the Japanese cultural experience, gaining a new perspective of the people and their customs in this part of the world.

STUDENT AWARDS Three Minute Thesis 2012
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Kevin Loo from the Faculty of Engineering’s Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) took out the honours last night in the final of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. He had three minutes to explain his PhD thesis- something that has involved years of work and dedication within the CMRP which is one of the Research Strengths of the University. Kevin’s thesis is ‘BrachyView: A Novel In-Body Imaging System for Prostate Brachytherapy’. He is the recipient of an Australian Rotary Health Scholarship for his PhD. Kevin’s primary supervisor is CMRP Director Professor Anatoly Rozenfeld. Higher Degree Research (HDR) students literally raced against time in the final of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. It was an event in which entrants had three minutes to deliver compelling orations on their thesis topics and its significance without slides or visual aids. While it is by no means an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing down’ research, it aims to force students to consolidate
their ideas and crystalise their research discoveries to explain their work in a language that is appropriate for an intelligent but nonspecialist audience. The competition aims to develop academic, presentation and research communication skills as well as support the development of HDR students’ capacity to effectively explain their research to others. SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Large, Controllable Spikes of Magnetoresistance in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3/SrTiO3 Superlattices
RESEARCH
We have investigated superlattices consisting of up to 30 epitaxial nanomultilayers (3–7 nm thick) of ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) hybrids. The superlattices demonstrate dramatic shifts of Curie temperature, indicating the possibility of its tunability. The metal–insulator transition (MIT) has been observed around 140 K. Below the MIT temperature, the superlattices have shown sharp drops of resistivity, facilitating the largest and sharpest magnetoresistance peaks (>2000%) ever observed in LCMO films and superlattices at low temperatures. The observed experimental results can be explained in the frame of the phase separation model in manganites with well-organized structures. The results of magnetic and transport measurements of such hybrid structures are discussed, indicating a magnetodielectric effect in STO interlayers. The magnetic and transport properties of the superlattices are shown to be technology-dependent, experiencing dimensional transitions, which enables the creation of structures with prescribed magnetoresistance characteristics for a broad range of applications.

Enhancing properties of high temperature superconducting step-edge Josephson junctions by nano-multilayers with a small mismatch In this work, we demonstrate a new straightforward, but effective multilayering approach for fab¬rication of high temperature superconductor (HTS) step-edge junctions with significantly enhanced characteristics. The alternation of main YBCO and interme¬diate NdBa2Cu3O7 (NdBCO) superconducting layers was shown to dramatically improve surface morphology of 1 μm thick films. Furthermore, this architecture resulted in considerable enhancement of flux pinning and current-carrying ability over a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures. We have suc¬cessfully managed to apply this technology to YBCO step-edge junctions and to demonstrate significant enhancement of trans¬port and structural properties in these junctions. This approach is preferred over the fabrication of thick film, because it ena¬bles structural tailoring with simultaneous adjustment of trans¬port properties required for junction performance. Thus, the multilayered deposition is offering a new promising approach for applications in HTS-based electronics.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Significant tunability of thin film functionalities enabled by manipulating magnetic and structural nano-domains The influence of laser frequency on the structure and physical properties of thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been studied. Different types of thin films, hard ferromagnetic FePt L10and quasi-single crystal superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO), have been used for demonstration of the effect. Significant structural modifications have been obtained for the films with similar thicknesses. These modifications are shown to dramatically control their corresponding properties (e.g. the 20-fold increase of coercive field in FePt films; the reversal of the critical current density in YBCO films), providing an instrumental ability for tuning the practical characteristics of the films for applications such as data storage and recording by changing the laser frequency of their deposition. Figure shows magnetic force microscopy (MFM) evaluation of ferromagnetic FePt films. In these images, light (yellow) and dark (purple) regions represent domains polarised in the up and down directions, respectively. By overlaying the MFM phase signal on topography, it is clear that the films deposited at 2 Hz and 6 Hz form single domain structures that correlate exactly with FePt islands. The 1 Hz film has a percolated morphology and forms multiple magnetic domains. Scan size 1 Âľm. Acquired with the MFP3D AFM.
Igor A. Golovchanskiy, Alexey V. Pan, Sergey A. Fedoseev, and Michael Higgins Appl. Surf. Sci. 311, 549 (2014).
Different experimental techniques are employed to evaluate the critical current density (Jc), namely transport current measurements and two different magnetisation measurements forming quasi-equilibrium and dynamic critical states. Our technique-dependent results for superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) film and MgB2 bulk samples show extremely high sensitivity of Jc and associated interpretations (such as irreversibility fields and so-called Kramer plots), which lose meaning without a universal approach. We propose such approach for YBCO films based on their unique pinning features. This approach allows us to accurately recalculate the magnetic field-dependent Jc obtained by any technique into the Jc behaviour, which would have been measured by any other method without performing the corresponding experiments. We also discovered low frequency-dependent phenomena, governing flux dynamics, but contradicting to the considered ones in the literature. The understanding of these phenomena, relevant to applications with moving superconductors, can clarify their dramatic impact on the electric field criterion through flux diffusivity and corresponding measurements.

Collective librations of water molecules in the crystal lattice of rubidium bromide: experiment and simulation Terahertz spectroscopy of RbBr reveals four prominent absorption lines at room temperature and a further 15 lines at 10 K. Via density-functionaltheory (DFT) numerical modelling using the PBE0 hybrid GGA functional, all the absorptions are identified as correlated librations of water molecules in the RbBr lattice. Each libration mode is a combination of rocking, wagging and twisting motions of the water molecules. The number of libration lines and numerical modelling show that the C2v symmetry of water in RbBr is broken. Our modelling shows that the distribution of libration amplitudes and phases for different water molecules in the RbBr unit cell varies greatly between the different modes. All librational lines red-shift with increasing temperature. The rate of change for most lines is in the range 60–90 MHz K-1 (or (2–3) x 10-3 cm-1 K-1). Two lines shift more rapidly with temperature, at rates of 240 and 300 MHz K-1 (or (8 and 10) x 103 cm-1 K-1), respectively. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the linewidth distinguishes two groups of lines. For one group, with weak linear temperature dependence of linewidth, cubic anharmonic terms in the RbBr crystal field are significant. This group is mainly associated with fully symmetric correlated librations. For the second group, with strong non-linear temperature dependence of the linewidth, quartic anharmonic terms in the RbBr crystal field are significant. However, the distribution of libration amplitudes, as well as the type of libration modes, influence the temperature dependence of the red shift, the linewidth, and the intensity, as well. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigation confirms the necessity of obtaining low- temperature data to observe all the calculated modes; moreover, the richness of detail in the temperature dependence of the data invites further modelling spanning a range of temperatures.
Terahertz spectroscopy of 2,4- Dinitrotoluene over a wide temperature range (7 – 245 K) Previous THz spectroscopy of the TNT explosive precursor, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), has been restricted to room temperature (apart from one set of data at 11 K). Here, for the first time, we investigate the spectrum as the temperature is systematically varied, from 7 to 245 K. Many new features appear in the spectrum on cooling below room temperature. As well as the five absorption lines observed previously, we observe five additional lines. In addition, a new room-temperature line at 8.52 THz (281 cm−1) is observed. Six of the lines red-shift with temperature and four of them blue-shift. The blue shift is explained by interplay between intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The variation in line width and line intensity with temperature is not systematic, although a conspicuous decrease in line intensity with temperature is observed in all cases. Modeling with hybrid PBE0 and TPSSh functionals helps identify absorption modes.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Magnetization curves of sintered heavy tungsten alloys for applications in MRI-guided radiotherapy The measured curves show that the magnetic properties of sintered heavy tungsten alloys strongly depend on the iron content, whereas the addition of nickel in the absence of iron led to no measurable effect. Since a difference in the BH curves for two samples with identical quoted nominal composition from different manufacturers was observed, measuring of the BH curve for each individual batch of heavy tungsten alloys is advisable whenever accurate knowledge of the magnetic properties is crucial. The obtained BH curves can be used in FEM simulations to predict the magnetic impact of sintered heavy tungsten alloys.

We employ a combination of pulsed- and continuous-wave polarized terahertz spectroscopy techniques to probe temperature-dependent spin waves in the antiferromagnet NdFeO3 . Our optical data span 1.6–467 K and reveal a conspicuous spin reorientation between 110 and 170 K, during which the lower-energy mode softens completely. Complementary inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the frequencies of the optically excited spin waves are consistent with a temperature-variable spin gap in the low-energy spin-wave dispersion of NdFeO3 . The result links the temperature dependence of the spin waves to a dynamic in-plane anisotropy. The magnetic anisotropy is calculated based on the results of the optical measurements. The change observed in the anisotropy energy along the a and c crystal axes suggests that the spin reorientation evident in NdFeO3 is driven by temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Photonic Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Photon-Phonon Interactions The Aharonov–Bohm effect is one of the most intriguing phenomena in both classical and quantum physics, and associates with a number of important and fundamental issues in quantum mechanics. The Aharonov–Bohm effects of charged particles have been experimentally demonstrated and found applications in various fields. Recently, attention has also focused on the Aharonov–Bohm effect for neutral particles, such as photons. Here we propose to utilize the photon- phonon interactions to demonstrate that photonic Aharonov–Bohm effects do exist for photons. By introducing nonreciprocal phases for photons, we observe experimentally a gauge potential for photons in the visible range based on the photon-phonon interactions in acousto-optic crystals, and demonstrate the photonic Aharonov–Bohm effect. The results presented here point to new possibilities to control and manipulate photons by designing an effective gauge potential.

Diamond microdosimeters for harsh radiation environments
45
Diamond is an exciting new material for microdosimetry for space applications given its superior radiation hardness. It is considered to be a tissue equivalent material, making it ideal for radiation protection applications. It was shown that given a suitable correction factor (C), the energy deposition response in diamond to water, for protons and alpha particles typical of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and Solar Particle Events (SPE), see J. A. Davis, et al., IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci., 61(4), 2014. The first prototype created at CMRP, utilised boron implantation to create the first 3D SV via electrical isolation. This device is described in J. A. Davis, et al, IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci., 59(6), 2012. This device was the first of its kind, and whilst successful in creating 3D SV structures, it was limited in the sensitive volume (SV) definition and charge collection efficiency. A second prototype was designed and developed to address these limitations. This device utilised the technique of laser ablation, to create physically isolated SV structures. This device is described in detail in J. A. Davis, et al, IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci., 61(6), 2014. The device was investigated using the technique of Ion Beam Induced Current (IBIC) upon the ANTARES accelerator at ANSTO.

Following the successful demonstration of laser milling in creating isolated SV structures in diamond, see J. A. Davis, et al., IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci., 61(6), 2014.2014. A new device utilising this same technique in currently being developed. Along with the aforementioned laser milled trenches, this device will also include additional features to improve upon SV size and definition. The device is constructed upon a 30 mm thick sample of electronic grade diamond. The device features a 6x6 array of 30x30 mm2 SV structures, separated by laser milled trenches 20 mm deep and 20mm wide. The thickness of the substrate, along with array structure and the presence of mirrored contacts are hypothesised to produce improved charge confinement to SV regions along with a SV size applicable for microdosimetric applications. This device along with many others which utilise a variety of different techniques, are currently under development at CMRP.

RESEARCH
High dose rate brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation treatment typically used for prostate cancer. Small, hollow plastic catheters are inserted into the prostate and a very high activity source delivers dose by moving through each catheter, completing the treatment within a few minutes. A device, known as a remote afterloader, is used to robotically control the placement of the source, by driving it to planned points inside of each catheter, for a time needed to deliver the correct dose to the tumour. Due to the very small margin of error and large risks associated with using such a high dose over a short period of time, there is a great need for verification systems that can accurately determine that the treatment delivered is matching the plan exactly. During this research, we successfully developed a novel system that was capable of measuring the quality of the brachytherapy delivery based on silicon detector technology. This world first comprehensive system was developed to assess the treatment delivered by the remote afterloader. Using the prototype system, named “Magic Phantom”, it was possible to measure and analyse treatment deliveries, with a source position and timing accuracy of less than 1 mm and 1 ms, respectively. Specialised electronics and software was designed to be easy to use, and featured automatic machine malfunction detection. Based upon the measured source positions and times, the dose in water was calculated at the detector plane and compared with planned. The high timing resolution of the system further allowed for the calculation of the additional transition dose delivered during the source movements, which is not generally considered and can be significant. The use of this system in hospitals will fill a large gap in the verification of this treatment, and give confidence to doctors and medical physicist that the treatment will be delivered exactly as intended.

RESEARCH
A new silicon microdosimeter with 3D sensitive volumes (SVs) has been proposed, designed and fabricated at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC). The new microdosimeter is called “bridge” microdosimeter as it has thin Si bridges between the SVs to support the Al tracks over the SVs. The charge collection study of the new device and its application for RBE determination in 12C radiation therapy at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC), Japan is presented. Fig. 1a shows the 3D bridge microdosimeter mounted on a dual-in-line (DIL) package and Fig. 1b shows SEM image of arrays of SVs where the etched region outside the SVs was clearly visible. This new technology provided well-defined micron sized 3D SVs of dimensions similar to biological cells. The charge collection in the 3D SVs of the bridge microdosimeter was investigated using 5.5 MeV He2+ ion scanning microbeam at the Australian National Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Fig. 2 shows median energy maps obtained from odd and even arrays of the 3D bridge microdosimeter. Derived RBE10 values based on the Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM) model [1] and SOI bridge microdosimetric spectra is presented in Fig. 3. The RBE10 values matched very well with those obtained from the TEPC measurements. Due to the high spatial resolution of the microdosimeter, more detailed RBE10 measurements were obtained at the end of the SOBP compared to the TEPC. It should be noted that the bridge microdosimeter measurements were done in a PMMA phantom while the TEPC measurements were carried out in water. This work presented the first RBE10 derivation in a 12C ion therapeutic beam using a high spatial resolution SOI microdosimeter and demonstrated a simple and fast method for Quality Assurance in charge particle therapy using silicon microdosimeter. SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Monte Carlo simulation of the dose response of a novel 2D silicon diode array for use in hybrid MRI-LINAC systems MRI-linac systems have been proposed to provide a new form of image-guided adaptive radiation therapy. These systems will utilize the superior soft tissue contrast of MR imaging during radiation therapy treatments to provide superior target coverage and sparing of healthy tissue. A novel 2D silicon diode array detector developed at the CMRP has been characterized by Monte Carlo simulation for its performance inside magnetic fields representative of MRI-linac systems. The detector, named the Magic Plate, consists of 121 silicon diodes (dimensions 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.38 mm3) embedded in a thin kapton substrate, and is magnetic field compatible. The trajectories of secondary electrons become altered in a magnetic field, particularly at high-low density interfaces. As a result, detectors traditionally used for photon beam quality assurance, such as gas-filled ionisation chambers, need multiple corrections depending on their geometry, and the orientation and strength of the magnetic field. The slim design and small detector size of the Magic Plate means it is minimally perturbative, and is capable of producing a response to within 1% of water dose in a magnetic field. As such, the array is expected to be a valuable tool for MRI-linac applications.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS Investigation of the use of novel ceramic oxide nanoparticles to improve the clinical outcome of radiotherapies Nanoparticles (NPs) have been shown by experimental and simulation studies to enhance X-ray radiotherapy of cancer. The effectiveness of radiation damage is enhanced in the presence of high atomic number (high-Z) NPs due to increased production of low energy, higher linear energy transfer (LET) secondary electrons when NPs are selectively internalized by tumour cells. High-Z NPs are also expected to be attractive for radiation damage enhancement in charged particle therapy. This project quantifies the dose enhancement of high-Z NPs in proton therapy, by means of Geant4 simulations. The NPs under study include gold (a wellknown, biocompatible radiation enhancer) as well as novel NP materials, fabricated at the Institute of Superconducting and Intelligent Material (ISEM) at UoW, tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) and cerium oxide (CeO2).
Figure: NP sphere of high-Z gold with incident 5MeV proton (blue track) and secondary electrons (red tracks) simulated with Geant4 and Geant4-DNA in a water medium.
RESEARCH
The energy deposition on a nanoscale around a single nanoparticle of 100 nm diameter is investigated in this project using the Monte Carlo toolkit Geant4 and the Geant4-DNA Package to model particle interactions in the water medium. Energy deposition enhancement locally to the NP boundary ranging approximately between 14% and 31% has been observed for a proton energy range between 5 MeV and 90 MeV, depending on the NP material. Enhancement of electron production and energy deposition can be correlated to the direct DNA damage mechanism. The simulation study demonstrates the theoretical potential for the application of novel ceramic oxide NP materials, developed at ISEM, for the dose enhancement of proton therapy.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS New Silicon Detector Technology for Synchrotron X-Ray Microbeam Radiation Therapy
RESEARCH
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the number of cancer cases in Australia continues to grow every year and around 50% of cancer patients currently receive some form of radiotherapy. The treatment of some cancers (e.g. glioblastoma multiforme) is very challenging with the treatment outcomes of surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy are not always ideal, and for certain variants, the long term prognosis is very poor. Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT), an exciting and very novel form of radiosurgery using submillimetre X-ray beams, offers new hope for such cancer treatment. Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT), a submillimeter X-ray radiosurgery technique, utilises the dose volume sparing effect by using highly collimated, parallel X-ray microbeams (with width 0.05 mm and pitch 0.4 mm) to deliver a uniform radiation dose to a target. A microbeam peak dose of 400 Gy, delivered in <1 sec minimises any cardiosynchronous related blurring of the microbeam X-ray paths. MRT quality assurance (QA) is very challenging due to the high dose rates (~20,000 Gy/sec) and highly striated X-ray radiation field. This talk will introduce the concept of MRT and the development of X-Tream, a high speed readout system with high resolution (micron-scale) silicon detectors for real-time dosimetry and beam monitoring, developed at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP), University of Wollongong. The System has the ability to measure the instantaneous dose rate associated at any point with micron spatial resolution and hence is able to deduce the peak dose and valley dose between microbeams, which is referred to as the peak-to-valley dose ratio (PVDR). The X-Tream system is the first real-time dosimetry system for MRT to be developed in the world.

ALUMNI Once students complete their degree at UOW, they become part of a global community of 120.000 alumni, a network of graduates across the world with the shared experience of studying at UOW. Below are members of our Alumni that have become very successful in their chosen career.
Toni de Liseo Bachelor of Science (Physics)
When Information and Communication Technology Illawarra (ICTI) president Tony de Liseo was a high school work experience student in UOW’s Department of Physics in 1982, he “earned his keep” by solving a mechanical problem the department was having with some calibrating equipment.
COMMUNICATION
That experience not only sparked Tony’s passion for physics, but landed him a part-time job as a technical aid in the department when he enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree after his Higher School Certificate.
81
Tony says the Physics Department was an exciting place for a young science student, with inspiring academics like Dave Martin, Ken Osborne, Peter Fisher, Jadish Mather and Lindsay Smith, while some astronomy observations of Supernova 87a he did with Glen Moore were published by the Smithsonian Institute in the US. Tony says his general science degree was an excellent grounding for his first career in process control and automation. He then started specialising in IT, spending a number of years in consulting and IT training before establishing an Australian office for a UK-based Bond International Software 14 years ago.
UOW PHYSICS ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2014
Tony is Asia Pacific Manager for Bond, which specialises in developing software and providing support services for human resources departments of large national and international corporations and staff recruitment consultancies. The 20-strong multicultural team at the Wollongong office services clients across Australia and Asia Pacific, as far away as Japan, China, Hong Kong and South America with software development, servicing and technical support, including a help desk. Eighty percent of Bond’s staff are UOW graduates. Tony moved Bond’s office from Sydney to Wollongong soon after establishing it. Tony said the manager of Bond’s Hong Kong office had joined the company after studying for his Masters degree in Wollongong. “He worked for us here for a couple of years before going back to Hong Kong to open our office there. One of the technical engineers in Hong Kong was looking to do his Masters, and chose UOW so that he could continue to work parttime while studying.” Tony was elected president of the region’s ICT cluster in 2010, and is determined to build stronger networks and collaboration between companies in the expanding sector so that they grow and prosper, benefitting each other and promoting the
region as an ICT hub. “Wollongong has so many competitive advantages for our industry, including lifestyle, lower office-space costs and lower staff turnover than the capital cities,” Tony said. “The University of Wollongong produces more ICT graduates than any other university in NSW, and many are phenomenally talented. If we don’t engage them they have to go – to Sydney and in many cases overseas.”

Bachelor of Medical and Radiation (Physics)
I completed the Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics at UOW in 2012 and then went on to study a Master of Science - Research, doing a project which focused on Radiotherapy Treatment Plan verification. This led me to the position as a Medical Physics Registrar at The Prince of Wales Hospital, associated with the Training Education and Assessment Program (TEAP) at the Australasian College of Physical Scientists & Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM). This role has given me the opportunity to further my education and training towards becoming a Medical Physics Specialist.
It is wonderful to see how the theory and principles I have learnt at university can be put into practice to benefit the community. Being an integral part of a team who are able to make a profound impact upon the quality of life and the health of people and families by working with and utilising state-of-the-art medical radiation physics technology is highly rewarding.
My career has only just begun; there are endless opportunities that may arise in the future. I intend on completing my registrar position at the Prince of Wales hospital and obtaining my certification as a Medical Physics Specialist. Further on down the track I would like to return to UOW as a collaborator, utilising my skills and experiences gained in the clinical Medical Physics environment to advance research in the field of Medical Physics.
My occupation affords me the opportunities for involvement in advanced Medical Physics research as well as travel to local and overseas conferences for training courses, networking with and meeting new people in the field.

It began as an excuse to study physics by the sea. I grew up as an inland kid and the appeal of moving to a coastal town was huge. The ability to study my favourite subject, and for it to lead into the medical domain was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse. The first couple of years were difficult, lots of general physics & math but there was always at least one subject or one lecturer on hand to ensure that it remained interesting and to keep me thinking about and waiting for the ‘what’s next’. True to this expectation the last 2 years or my undergrad flew by. I spent the majority of my final year placed at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital Radiotherapy department putting into practice all of the theory I had worked on at uni. I worked alongside an incredibly knowledgeable group who complemented perfectly the

excellent lectures and labs from our dedicated UoW team. I graduated with Honours and was accepted into a position at the Martyr Hospital as a Medical Physics Registrar while still working towards, and receiving my Master of Science, again with the full support of the CMRP team at UOW. The B. Medical Radiation Physics (Hons) has given me an incredible skill set and knowledge base but more importantly a way of thinking that seems to be applicable to so many areas of my professional life. Over the years I have had varied positions, all of which were accessible to me thanks to my studies at UoW. I spent the 3 years as a hospital based Medical Physicist in Sydney before looking for a sea change. I found an incredible position while overseas and spent two years in the UK working
with a small team to develop planning software for Neurosurgeons. I’m now living in Switzerland working for the American company, Accuray in a training and support position. I’m responsible for ensuring that our European customers have the knowledge and tools they need to use Accuray’s TomoTherapy treatment system to its fullest. I get the opportunity to spend most of my day working alongside health care professionals from all backgrounds and can honestly say that the UOW team and in particular the CMRP gave me an amazing foundation from which I have launched a career that I love.

I graduated from the Bachelors of Medical Radiation Physics program in 2003 with 1st Class Honours and the University Medal in Engineering and moved in to a PhD program with my mentor Professor Anatoly Rozenfeld. My PhD focused on microdosimetry and nanodosimetry for space and therapeutic applications in proton therapy, which by its very nature was cutting edge and meant a great deal of time overseas, much of which was supported through a Fulbright Scholarship awarded in 2005. The cutting edge nature of the research pioneered at the Center for Medical Radiation Physics allowed me to gain experience at many world renowned institutions including the Harvard School of Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center and United
States Naval Academy. The PhD program at the CMRP gave me the opportunity to develop skills in physics, radiation detectors, radiobiology and computer programming all of which have stood me in good stead in my career. Professor Rozenfeld and the entire team at the CMRP is focused on ensuring their work is presented and published in the wider community and this focus is translated to graduate students in their program. While many may overlook this, the encouragement of students to present and publish their work teaches them skills in professional scientific writing and also develops confidence in public speaking while enhancing their CV.
Loma Linda University Health. This advancement would not be possible without the support of Anatoly Rozenfeld and the rest of the CMRP team and it now allows me to carry on the tradition of supporting the treatment of cancer patients and training the next generation of caregivers and researchers.
I graduated with a PhD in Physics from the Center for Medical Radiation Physics in 2007 with the Australian Institute for Nuclear Science and Engineering Gold Medal for Excellence in Research. I immediately went to work at Loma Linda University Medical Center as a Medical Physicst. The training at the CMRP and the University of Wollongong gave me a great foundation on which to build on and advance within the Loma Linda Organization.
