At Home with Cathy Stubbs

Cathy Stubbs has seen thousands of beautiful homes, while representing home buyers and sellers for more than 30 years. But the most beautiful home to Cathy is the one she shares with her husband of 28 years. The home she raised her two children in. The home she goes back to every night after a long day as the most trusted real estate agent in Fort Bend County.

After making a thoughtful decision to settle in Sugar Land in 1987, Cathy never left. “I know everything there is to know about Sugar Land and Fort Bend County,” she says, “and I bring that to the table for every conversation, negotiation, and transaction I’m involved in.”

Why Sugar Land?

It’s the 49th largest city in Texas, with a population of approximately 111,000 residents and almost 40,000 homes. “We’re truly a city in our own right, not just a suburb of Houston,” Cathy says. “But it still feels small and cozy, and everything is a quick drive away.” Houston is only a 15-minute drive up Hwy 59.

One of the great things about the city is the variety within its population. “We have a dynamic kaleidoscope community,” she says. “I love how different everyone’s background is, but how similar we are at the same time.”

Because of this kaleidoscope, the city has a vibrant entertainment and arts community. The Smart Financial Center offers everything from Tejano to Bollywood, Classic Rock to Disney, and everything in between. The Crown Festival Park hosts kite festivals, music festivals, and events like the Red, White and Boom and the Holi Festival of Colors. The city also boasts the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, the art museum TX, and the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center.

With an average residential value of more than $450,000, Sugar Land has something for everyone. Looking for a family home on a wooded lot with a water view? Sugar Land has it. Want a modern brownstone without a yard to care for? Sugar Land has that too. How about a custom home in an established golf course community with all of the amenities your family would enjoy? Yes, Sugar Land has it!

And the Fort Bend ISD schools offer a great education – FBISD students outperform the Texas and national mean on both the SAT and ACT tests.

“I’ve been singing Sugar Land’s praises for decades. I become more impressed every year with the enhancements and developments made by my hometown … the improvements feel made to order for my family and for my business,” Cathy says.

For Cathy, it’s Just Home

Cathy feels extremely fortunate to live and work in one of the most beautiful communities in the world. “Both my children swam on our neighborhood swim team and played in the lush playgrounds that were within walking distance from our house,” she says. “My kids, now grown, are still living and working in Sugar Land.”

As far as Cathy is concerned, she plans to stick around, helping people settle into the beauty and comfort of the city she loves. “I just love what I do,” she says.

Tstronger about that sentiment than Classic Chevy. “Our Classic family wants to help other families celebrate the spirit of the season,” says Tony Gomez, Classic’s general sales manager. “We’re excited to sponsor the Classic Chevy Toy Drive, benefiting Nery’s Promise, this year.”

“Our vision is to meet the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of each child in our community with God’s love and provision,” says the president of the board for Nery’s Promise, Doug Goff.

The Nery’s Promise children are invited to a party in Classic’s showroom where they’ll enjoy cookies and hot cocoa, music and holiday entertainment, and receive gifts from the big man himself – Santa!

If you wish to donate a toy for this event, Classic is accepting new, unwrapped donations for children ages three to 14. Collection boxes are located in the dealership lobby.

“Children are the future of our community and we must invest in them,” explains Nery Salazar, the selfless leader of Nery’s Promise. “Personal connection and love are the most effective ways to encourage healthy development. We’re so thankful that the folks at Classic Chevy are willing to take part in this personal connection that will make every child attending feel special.”

“At Classic Chevy, we support the goals of Nery’s Promise and hope we can make a difference in these children’s lives during this spiritual time of year,” Tony says. “Help us help the kids – drop off your toys for our Classic Christmas today!”

Get ready for some new Big Leaguers in town. Women’s Volleyball is about to hit the scene, and it’s going to be fierce.

“I love being part of a team,” says Jordan Thompson, one of the first players to commit to League One Volleyball’s Houston team. “It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself.”

Teammate Micha Hancock, also a founding athlete, adds, “There is a lot of volleyball talent in the United States and we wanted to spread that national talent across the country.”

Micha and Jordan are familiar with working as a team and sharing their athleticism with an audience – they’re both Olympians. “We played together in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024,” Jordan says. They have the medals to prove it. In Tokyo, they won gold, in Paris, they won silver.

“Volleyball is huge overseas … it’s one of the most popular sports,” Jordan explains. “The time is now for volleyball to be on the professional stage in the United States.” League One Volleyball (LOVB) is making

that happen. LOVB (pronounced “love”) is a first-of-its-kind community re-imagining the future of volleyball. A grassroots endeavor, built from League One Volleyball’s foundation of junior volleyball clubs and led by the world’s best professional players (including several Olympians like Jordan and Micha), the games promise to be exciting.

With six pro teams from Salt Lake City to Atlanta, competitions begin in early January. LOVB Houston Volleyball will play its home games at the Fort Bend County Epicenter on the Southwest Freeway in Rosenberg.

“We’re still learning our team, but when we hit the court in January, we’ll be ready,” Micha says. “We’ll be playing against athletes we know well, which will make the games even more exciting!”

“The structure of this league has never been done before,” Jordan says. “It’s great to be a part of history being made.”

Be there when it all begins at the Fort Bend County Epicenter on January 9th. Season and single-game tickets are on sale now.

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents A Pediatric Dentist

for Everyone

Brittany Thomas sometimes brings in three or four kids at one time to see Dr. Faisal Khan and his team at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. They’re not all her own kids … she works for an organization that provides youth services.

“Everyone needs to go to the dentist,” Brittany says. “I want to be sure these kids get their teeth cleaned regularly and have exams to catch any problems in their teeth.”

Since Dr. Faisal Khan launched Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental 12 years ago, the practice has grown to be able to handle multiple patients at one time. Back in 2012, it was just Dr. Khan and two employees. Today, this dynamic pediatric dental office has 23 members on staff and serves a population of thousands of little patients across Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Fulshear, and Katy. “Dr. Khan loves kids, and kids love Dr. Khan!” says Dr. Khan’s wife, Samiha.

“It is a great place to take children,” Brittany says. “Dr. Khan and all of his staff know just how to put them at ease and get them through the process quickly.” The children can often be treated all at the same time in the big treatment room full of surfboard dental beds.

“Kids are my whole life,” says Dr. Khan. “They’re so much fun. Every patient is different … children keep things exciting and fast-paced. My own kids, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, visit the office all the time. They love talking to the employees, and they help out by making goody bags and shredding papers.”

In addition to treating multiple patients at one time in a fun environment, Dr. Khan maintains a fondness for treating children with special needs. “Individuals with special needs have greater dental needs, and they’re at higher risk for developing dental and oral diseases. We do not recommend delaying routine dental care.”

Dr. Khan explains, “We can accommodate most special needs kids in the office. My

staff understands that some kids are sensitive to touch, new people, or a change of environment or routine. Tell us about your child’s limitations, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. We can do simple things like ensure your child is seen by the same dental hygienist, who will wear the same outfit as their prior visit, while also treating the child in the same room and chair. Depending on the situation, we have mild sedation options available. For kids with needs that just can’t be met in a dental chair, we offer hospital dentistry. Sometimes it’s the most compassionate approach for children who struggle with medical or emotional challenges.”

Whether one child, multiple children, or children with special needs, Dr. Khan and his team are committed to making your child’s dental care as comfortable and easy as possible.

Short Stay at Encompass Health Rehab Hospital Boosts Independence for Young Stroke Patient

Tiffany Razzo never imagined she would have a stroke at 39 years old. “My husband, George, and I attended a family reunion in Florida in 2021. Thirty family members attended and 30 of us tested positive for Covid the next week,” says Tiffany, now 42. “I thought I had it easy with no symptoms … until 2 a.m. one night, when I woke up with a facial droop, slurred words, and slow speech.” George, a healthcare employee, knew he had to act quickly. He employed the FAST procedure and recognized immediately that Tiffany needed emergency care. At the hospital, George’s fear was confirmed – Tiffany had a major stroke. “I was right-handed and lost use of my right leg, arm, and hand,” she says. “It took away my independence. But I try to find the silver lining in everything. I’m just grateful to be where I am today. A lot of people don’t make it through a severe stroke.”

Tiffany had a lot to fight for. She and George share two dogs, Obi and Anakin, one cat, Yuki, and a leopard gecko, Walker. She is close with her parents and her in-laws. She has six brothers and sisters, with 27 nieces and nephews. All were awaiting her homecoming. She picked Encompass Health Sugar Land for her rehabilitation because it was the closest to her home. It turned out to be a great decision.

“Going through this taught me to learn to lean on others,” Tiffany says. “My family was a big support. I had a whole care team at Encompass and everyone was amazing. They saw past the stroke

A Nice Smile is a Work of Art

“Ilike to smile,” says Richmond resident Eugene George. “I like talking to people. When I had bad teeth, I noticed that people would end conversations early or just stare at my mouth.”

The journey to finding the right dentist wasn’t easy. Eugene visited several dentists in his native New Orleans and after moving to Texas, “but nothing felt right,” he says. Until he met Dr. Asha Patel of Smile Solutions, located off of the Grand Parkway

in Richmond.

“I was driving by and the name – Smile Solutions – got my attention. When I met Dr. Patel, I just knew it was right,” Eugene explained. “Dr. Patel is a wonderful person and a wonderful dentist. She made me feel very comfortable. I knew I was dealing with someone I could trust.”

Eugene’s smile needed extensive work and Dr. Patel made it her mission to fix it. She explains, “After a comprehensive oral evaluation and analysis of his radiographs, I determined that Eugene would benefit the most from having his remaining teeth extracted, implants placed on the lower arch for a semi-removable prosthetic, and on the top we would fit a fully removable prosthetic. With this solution, Eugene now has the capability of removing the prosthetic himself, cleaning it at the end of the day, and then inserting it back onto the implants. This semi-removable prosthetic was also agreeable to Eugene’s budget and financial parameters.”

Eugene is soft-spoken, but smiles easily. “I’m from New Orleans, where food is our culture. Before, I couldn’t eat everything I wanted to,” he says. “I hadn’t had a taco in two years! It was great to eat a taco again.”

A third-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo, Eugene brings his rich NOLA background and passion for martial arts into his work as an artist. “I was at Tulane

and just talked to me like a regular person.”

“Recovering from an injury like this is hard for someone who is young and independent. Tiffany couldn’t walk on her own, speak clearly, brush her hair, or feed herself,” says Dr. Roshni Durgam, one of Tiffany’s physicians at Encompass. “She was incredibly hard working. She never complained, even with an intense schedule of three hours a day of physical, occupational, and speech therapy.”

“Tiffany came in requiring 100 percent assistance. She left three weeks later, walking on her own (with a walker),” Dr. Durgam continues. “She really put in the work. It was a huge difference in a short amount of time.”

studying to be a pediatrician… until I won an art scholarship. That’s when I changed my major to art. I look at Dr. Patel as an artist herself.”

“As dentists, we have the capability and skill set to change a person’s life. My goal is always to provide my patients with the very best options and technology available. Through implants, we gave Eugene the gift of a smile!” Dr. Patel says.

“You can see the WOW in the results,” Eugene concludes. “It was a great, life-changing experience.”

AIS Knows Fort Bend

“I’m raising my family right where I grew up. I lived in Sienna before Sienna was Sienna. I was actually in the first four-year graduating class of Elkins High School,” says Jaison Thottumkal (JT), owner of AIS Remodeling. “I’ve lived in Fort Bend County for decades and have had my own remodeling business for 20 of those years. We love updating kitchens because kitchens are where everyone gathers, especially during big holiday get-togethers. Right before the holidays is our busiest time because everyone wants the perfect kitchen to entertain.”

JT knows a little bit about busy kitchens and busy families. He and his wife, Preena, have two active, growing boys – Joshua is 10 and Jaiden is eight. Add to that their huge 100 lb. American Akita, Korage, and there is a lot of activity in the Thottumkal home. “Our boys love growing up in Ft. Bend County. They attend elementary school in the neighborhood and are busy with Jiu Jitsu and soccer,” JT says. “In a full-circle moment for me, I used to go to my dad’s construction sites with him, and now I sometimes take my kids to work with me.”

You may run into JT and his family at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church right here in Missouri City, or at an Exchange Club of Sugar Land fundraiser – he’s been a member of the club for years. The family business also donates

to the Houston Humane Society, has a business membership with The 100 Club, and donates to Child Advocates of Fort Bend.”

“I started this business because of my family ties with the construction industry. My dad is a custom home builder and commercial developer, and my family imports stone,” JT says. “My dad actually built the house where we lived in Waterbrook West, before Sienna surrounded our neighborhood.”

“In our area, many homes are 20, 30, 40 years old – they’re ready to be updated,” JT continues.

“In addition to kitchens, we also handle bathroom remodeling, flooring, and carpentry.

We’re a full service remodeling company.”

AIS has updated homes in some of the most established communities in our county.

“We work on homes in Greatwood, New Territory, Quail Valley – you name it and we’ve done a home there,” JT continues. They also travel as far as West University, River Oaks, The Woodlands, Lake Jackson, and everywhere in between.

If your Fort Bend County home needs a facelift, choose someone with a lifetime of experience in our community. Choose AIS.

Fighting Holiday Anxiety

Anxiety during the holidays can be common. Some people may feel isolated, especially if they’ve recently lost a loved one or don’t have a close network. After the holidays, it’s also common to feel a letdown, which can leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained.

“My family’s go-to when feeling anxious or overwhelmed is physical activity,” says founder of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph. “Just getting out and exercising can help change your

mindset. You should also ensure you get adequate sleep, and can practice mindfulness and confide in others.”

If you’re still feeling anxious, you may consider prescription medications to get you through the season. The Campbell’s Compounding team works hard to make sure that you’re getting the right dosage amounts and the administration techniques that meet your needs. “Most of us are accustomed to taking pre-fabricated pharmaceuticals in standard dosages and delivery systems – the one size fits all approach,” Dr. Campbell says. “That doesn’t always work.”

If you have very finely-tuned needs in terms of dosages, have allergies, or require an alternate delivery system, these pre-fabricated pharmaceuticals may not be the right medicine for you.

“Many people are allergic to inert ingredients such as lactose, sugar, and gluten, as well as the dyes and preservatives used in the manufacturing of many standardized medications,” Dr. Campbell

Lone Star Floors: a Family Focus

It was the late 80s. Cousins Ziad Naser and Imad Manour had been in the flooring business for a few years. When their cousin Mohamed Naser said, “Let’s work together and open a store,” Ziad and Imad were on board. “Thirty-five years later, here we are! Still operating Lone Star Floors in three locations,” says Ziad.

During that time, Mohamed and his wife raised five children in Sugar Land. Ziad also raised five children, while Imad raised two. “We’re a traditional family – my wife cooks all day on Fridays for family dinner,” Mohamed says. Their family-focus spilled over into the cousins’ flooring business. At Lone Star Floor’s three Houston-area locations, they treat their customers like family. “I had an elderly gentleman who reminded me of my father, who passed away last year. He was so thankful for our service, he gave me a big hug,” Mohamed said. “I just treated him the same way I hoped people would treat my own dad.”

continues. “At Campbell’s Compounding, we can create the exact pharmaceutical compound that you need, while eliminating the inactive ingredients that may cause allergies or trigger sensitivities.”

Dr. Campbell continues, “Some oral medications have an unpleasant flavor … we can improve the palatability of your medication without compromising its efficacy. In some cases, patients with difficulty swallowing might prefer to absorb their medications in a liquid form.”

Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy prides itself on customer service by providing a family feel. Dr. Campbell says, “We work hard to help your family feel their best!”

The cousins’ Sugar Land store is 12,000 square feet, and carries all flooring types, from carpet to hardwood to laminate and tile. “We also do full kitchen and bathroom remodels, with access to subcontractors like electricians and plumbers,” Mohamed says. “It’s easier for our clients to deal with one company, without having to handle the subcontractors themselves.”

As expected, the store is full of laminate, hardwood, carpet, and specialty tile options. But it’s not just flooring on display – the store boasts luxurious lighting fixtures, modern wall panels, cabinetry, cabinet hardware and tons of shower wall and backsplash tile in distinct shapes with modern visual appeal. $400,000 Earned for Sugar Land’s First Responders!

It was an evening of giving at the Talyard Brewing Co. on October 25th! The Finest & Bravest Foundation welcomed Sugar Land police officers, firefighters, and EMS to the spotlight as the city’s grateful residents showed up in force to thank them.

Husband and wife team, KK and S. Scott West, were the Presenting Sponsors and 2024 Event Chairs. “The best part of the evening is when we, as a community, come together to acknowledge and thank our first responders and their families for all they do,” said KK. “It’s the most meaningful moment of the event, seeing everyone express their gratitude to those who protect and serve Sugar Land.”

Funds raised will benefit Sugar Land’s Fire, EMS, and Police departments, meeting ancillary needs with the purchase of equipment to enhance the efforts of our first responders and benefit our community, including the potential purchase and training of a new K-9 unit and outfitting a Chevrolet Tahoe to function as a mobile blood unit. Additional funds will support the standing Education and Compassion Funds.

“In today’s climate, it’s more crucial than ever to show our first responders that we stand behind them, beside them, and with them,” emphasized S. Scott West. “The work our Police, Fire, and

EMS do on a daily basis deserves so much more than we can ever offer. Supporting those who support us is the least we can do. Sugar Land already goes above and beyond to support its first responders, but with budget constraints, there’s always more we can do. That’s where the Finest and Bravest Foundation steps in, providing additional resources for life-saving equipment, educational opportunities, and even a fund for urgent needs.”

“We were thrilled to partner with Talyard, one of Sugar Land’s newest and unique venues,” said one of the event planners. “The weather was perfect, and the casual yet fun atmosphere added something special to the evening.”

Vice president of the foundation Gary Becker added, “The band was absolutely fantastic! SIXWIRE put on an incredible concert filled with classic hits that had everyone on their feet!”

Plans are already underway for the 2025 event. Stay tuned to finestandbravestfoundation.org/ for updates.

Cluck Yeah!

Ali is a long-time software engineer. Salma is a teacher. As their children have gotten older (they have a 19-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter), the couple started thinking of ways to fill some of their newly found free time.

Here’s where their path takes a sharp turn. Chicken certainly wasn’t on their radar. But when they came across food that was not only fresh and delicious, but also halal-prepared, the decision became obvious.

Ali and Salma Rizvi opened the country’s first Cluck Clucks Chicken and Waffles restaurant, right here in the heart of Sugar Land! “We have fun and

youthful menu items, all with cheeky names,” Salma says. “It gives me an 80s vibe and is just a cool place to hang out.”

The franchise originated in Canada and is known for its crunchy, yet juicy, fried chicken items, its savory jalapeno cheddar waffles and its unique plate presentations. “The Cluck Yeah is a customer favorite,” Ali says. “With boneless chicken fried to perfection, a perfectly browned jalapeno cheddar waffle, chipotle aioli, dill mayo, and coleslaw, it’s a masterpiece.”

“It’s definitely an Instagrammable sandwich!” adds Salma. “It hits every taste bud in your mouth.”

Besides the amazing food, the couple is excited

to offer an all-halal-prepared menu. “Houston’s halal food scene is well-known in the U.S. and Canada. We’re excited to be a part of that with Cluck Clucks,” Salma says. Sugar Land residents for 20 years, she and Ali are embedded in the community. “I love living here and feel like we can give back to the community we love through our restaurant.”

With menu items like Hot As Cluck, Mother Clucker, What the Cluck, and Holy Cluck, your sense of humor kicks in when you walk in the door. “You have to be young at heart to enjoy this tonguein-cheek food,” Salma concludes. “It’s some of the freshest and most unique food you’ll find in Sugar Land. You’ll be glad you came, and will come back again and again.”

Donations Needed for Santa’s Exchange

Of the many organizations serving Fort Bend County, the Exchange Club of Sugar Land is just the right fit for attorney Juli Fournier, managing partner at Stephenson Fournier. “The Exchange Club is for service-minded volunteers who just want to make our community a better place to live,” she says. “We raise awareness and financial support for local organizations that are making a difference in the area.”

Exchange is a national organization with many clubs. The national service project for all Exchange Clubs is the prevention of child abuse. The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, with over 100 members, has three additional focuses: Americanism; community service; and youth causes.

In November, the group combined all three focuses into one big event, the Field of Honor, a

display of 2,000 American flags honorably waving in a field near the University of Houston’s Sugar Land campus. “This event gave proud Americans a visible platform to honor their heroes by dedicating a flag to them,” says Camille Edwards, president of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land. “The proceeds benefit the many organizations that our club supports, including women’s and homeless shelters, food pantries, scout groups, and more.”

Juli, a long-time supporter of the Exchange Club, says, “Our next event is one of my favorites as we approach the holidays – Santa’s Exchange. I love seeing so many happy children and families. This year, we will donate gifts and food to families from the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.”

Plan Ahead to Avoid

TEMERGENCIES Holiday Plumbing

he holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and spending time with loved ones. But it can also be a time when plumbing emergencies strike unexpectedly. “Holiday celebrations mean more guests are at your home, which can put a strain on your plumbing system,” says Alan Burkhalter, owner and namesake of local Alan’s Plumbing. “Prepare your home now to avoid holiday emergencies.”

Be prepared – first things first, familiarize yourself with where the main water shut-off valve is in your home. Turning off the water quickly can help prevent further damage in case of a burst pipe or major leak.

Inspect your drains and garbage disposal –

“The first rule of using your sink is to avoid pouring grease down the drain,” Alan says. “Grease and oils can solidify in your pipes and cause blockages.” You should also avoid throwing fibrous or starchy foods, like potato peels or celery, down your drain, as it could jam the disposal.

Check your home for leaks – Look for moisture and drips around your faucets. Make sure your toilets aren’t running or leaking at their base. “And definitely call us ahead of time if you see any water stains in your drywall,” Alan continues. “That means there’s a leak somewhere. Let us fix the problem before you have a big issue.”

Water heater maintenance – “Sediment can accumulate in your water heater over time, reducing its efficiency,” Alan adds. “Flush your tanks to be sure your water heaters are performing properly. This is especially important if you will be having extra guests over the holidays, taxing your water heating system from the extra use.”

The experienced and thorough team at Alan’s Plumbing can help with all of these tasks. In addition to Alan and two of his sons, Luke and Beau (third son Jake works in plumbing sales nearby), Alan’s brother, Chris, is also a fixture around the office. The rest of Alan’s dynamic crew includes long-time plumbers Jaime,

Christian, and Anthony, who work alongside Luke and Beau. Nick, Noah, and PJ are apprentices, with Alan’s wife Jennifer running the back office, assisted by longtime family friend Katie and Katy (with a y), the friendly voices you hear when you call. Helping patrol the warehouse is the Burkhalters’ beloved 102 lb., two-yearold, rescue dog, Trump, along with their shop cats, Piper and Kohler.

“Be sure to reach out to us ahead of time to ensure your plumbing is in good shape for your guests,” Alan concludes. “That way, you can focus on what really matters— spending time with family and friends.”

Solutions for Missing Teeth

In recent years, dental implants have become a very popular alternative to traditional implants and bridges. Dental implants may be right for you if you:

• Have one or more missing teeth.

• Have a jawbone that’s reached full growth.

• Have enough bone to secure the implants or can have a bone graft.

• Have healthy tissues in your mouth.

• Don’t have health conditions that can affect bone healing.

• Aren’t able or willing to wear dentures.

• Want to improve your speech.

• Are willing to commit several months to the process.

• Don’t smoke tobacco.

Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. in Stafford says, “Once you have a missing tooth, your other teeth will start to gravitate to the open areas to fill the gap ... which leads to a domino effect and misalignment. With a success rate of over 95%, dental implants are an excellent choice for replacing your missing teeth. We can do single tooth crowns, or up to three unit bridges to replace consecutive missing teeth on a single implant.”

Don’t forget that December is the time of year to “use it or lose it” – a time when your dental benefits can go to waste if you don’t use them. “If you’re paying your dental insurance premiums every month, you should be using your benefits,” says Dr. Lomonte, who has been practicing at the same location in Stafford on

One more piece of advice: if you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), that money can be used to pay for your portion of any dental work. The money you have accumulated throughout the year will not rollover at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. So plan ahead and call Dr. Lomonte’s office today to set up your evaluation or cleaning.

Partnering

to Support Women’s Health

Capital Associates is excited to sponsor the fourth annual Booze and Boobs fundraiser, to be held on January 14th at Azumi in Houston.

Founded by Star Hand and Chloe Di Leo, the event is a ladies-only, all-pink-attire luncheon where every dollar raised goes to support The Rose. The Rose is a Houston-based, nonprofit breast care organization dedicated to saving lives through breast health services, advocacy, and access to care for all. It provides mammograms, diagnostics, ultrasounds, biopsies, and more to women regardless of their ability to pay.

“When my brother and I were growing up, our father had a heart attack and he was uninsured at the time. We are thankful for the care he received that saved his life, so we’re always looking for ways to help people who need medical care,” says Dr. Salman Aly, medical director of Capital Internal Medicine Associates (primary care) and Allure

Aesthetics. “In our practices, we often see women who are recovering from breast cancer treatments. My brother and I share the goal of helping these patients recover well and stay healthy and happy for the long run. We enjoy partnering with altruistic people with similar goals.”

“Cancer has hit my family in numerous ways –both of my grandparents lost their battles, as did two aunts. And my 27-year-old niece is currently fighting cancer,” Star says. “I felt a strong desire to do something meaningful to raise awareness.”

Booze and Boobs is unique in that it has zero overhead – every dollar goes directly to The Rose. Everything is donated, from the flowers to the auction items to the meal. “The Atlas Restaurant Group has generously offered one of their luxury restaurants every year to host the event. They donate the food, drinks, and service costs so all of the event’s proceeds can go directly toward diagnostic services that save lives,” Star adds.

“The earlier cancer is caught, the better it is for everyone – for both patients and their families,” says Dr Sarfraz Aly, Dr. Salman’s brother, medical director of Capital Infectious Disease Associates and Capital Advanced Wound Care. “We’re excited to be a part of an event that helps increase awareness and assists all women in getting diagnostic testing that will help with early detection.”

This year’s Booze and Boobs sponsors include Azumi, Atlas Restaurant Group, Hal Martin’s Watch & Jewelry, Beluga Vodka, Star & Ivan Hand, My Drink Bomb, Gina & Benny Gates, Gena & Paul Horak, Holly & Darron Clay, Kerri & Graham Ross, Iconstrux, Domus Caviar, Roula & Ryan, Dassai Sake, and House of Blooms. Event activities consist of the luncheon, a fashion show by Houston’s hometown designer Chloe Dao, and a silent auction. Radio personality Ryan Chase returns as the event emcee.

“Although our luncheon tickets sold out in just three hours, we still have sponsorships available and are always looking for auction and cash donations,” Star explains.

“We all know people who have been affected in one way or another by cancer,” Chloe adds. “If we can raise awareness and get even one woman to receive a mammogram, we’ve accomplished our goal.”

Three Family Members.

Brother Deepak’s home, check! Mom Molina’s bathroom, check! Sister Bhoonita’s bathroom, check! What’s next?

When The Re-Modelista, Teri Gilberg, began remodeling a Sugar Land home, she didn’t know it would turn into a family affair. She first remodeled several rooms in Deepak’s home. Then with Deepak’s referral, the family’s siblings teamed up to ensure their 91-yearold mother, Molina, received the same expert treatment from Teri in a bathroom remodel. The latest beneficiary is Bhoonita herself – her jackand-jill bathroom got a facelift. It now has a relaxing spa feel with modern hardware, large, contemporary metal-framed mirrors over the sinks, and soothing tile and backsplash throughout.

“I love the new walk-in shower. It’s so much more convenient than the tub/shower combo that was there before,” Bhoonita says. “I love the muted mint green color of the walls with the coordinating tile.” The intricate tile is in a unique honeycomb shape with palm leaf accents in a pleasing light green color. “I love the color green. We used the same general color scheme as we used in mom’s bathroom – it’s very soothing.”

The family doesn’t hesitate to go back to Teri again and again for all of its home update requirements “Teri is great. She listens to everything we need and her team protected the bathroom’s connecting rooms so well,” Bhoonita says. “We had a big group text that Teri would update every night so we knew exactly what was being done the next day.”

The bathroom’s brushed chrome fixtures, including grab bars, a sizable bench, and a versatile hand-held wand in the frameless shower stall, along with its white marble-like tile, add to its spa feel. As for mom Molina, she’s still enjoying her big bathroom remodel. “I love it,” she says.

“Maybe we’ll do the kitchen next!” says Bhoonita.

If they do, you can guarantee they’ll call the Re-Modelista to complete the job. “We will always recommend Teri for any remodeling work. She’s fantastic.”
