Edito 25. It is the number that for a few months invaded my mind. And it was not because of the nerves of having to develop a special magazine or with different content; because we know that we are on the right path. It was more the pressure and responsibility to realize what I had in hand. Memories came to me when I collected different surf magazines in paper format, and I saw that already had the number 95, or 120, etc...And I said: “Buaaa ... they have a lot of published numbers”. It’s true, we do not carry as much as these, but we’re talking about Stand Up Paddle and we know the time it takes in our lives. There is a lot of work, time and money invested to achieve 25 publications. But the happiness that overflows me while I write these lines, has no expiration date.

Yes, you are already seeing it. For the first time, the ¨Edito¨ is being written in the first person. I’m Nicolás Arnedo, Up Suping director and I have to tell you ¨THANKS¨ for joining us during these 25 numbers, or those you have read. THANK YOU to all the collaborators, photographers, editors and other colleagues. THANKS to the brands and companies that give their granite of the sand with their advertising, they are the blood that reaches the heart of this project. THANKS to all the people for give life to this sport and to all who will come. Now we will go for more! Ladies and gentlemen...Welcome to Up # 25!

PABLO ANIA The Mediterranean continues to harvest great riders and Pablo Ania it is one of them. Let’s get to know him a little more... Up Suping

Schofield. ISA. Pablo Ania. Up Suping

Hi, Pablo! Not long ago you went to a SUP board and everything has been good results. How and when were your beginnings? Although with the SUP race I started two years ago, for the windsurfing club we al-ready had tables for years. We only used them to lower waves and, from time to time, to walk. And now how about you start the 2019 season? After the ISA World SUP in China, I had to rest and do a reset. Now we had the first test at home, in Burriana, and the truth is that there was a fair bit of preparation, although it is true that the level was very high to be the first test of the year. You have already participated in defending the colors of Spain in a European Championship and in the ISA World Championship in China. How were both experiences for you? The truth is that it was a pleasure and pride. I had already participated in international windsurfing championships but, doing it collectively as in the SUP, it was a very nice experience.

Schofield

Like other great riders you also come from windsurfing. What is the change at a physical level and what are the advantages of practicing these great sports? The physical change is really big. In windsurfing, in my opinion, technique, knowledge of the material and tactics are more important; being the physical part much less important. In the SUP race, if you are not trained, it does not matter how good you are or paddling...you´ll not win. Regarding the advantages, it does not matter if you’ve done windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking ...I think the main advantage is having practiced water sports and having that “feeling” with the sea.

ISA

How about the Stand Up Paddle environment throughout the Mediterranean? Between that wonderful circuit and the very good weather conditions...it’s a paradise! The truth is that it is great, precisely the Mediterranean Circuit was what made me interested in the race. After talking to Dani Parres, he told me how many tests they had and that most were in the Valencian Community. And a week ago I was participat-ing in the first one. How have you been noticing your progression between workouts and different events that you have participated in? Have you been achieving your goals? 2017 was my first year, but I think the big evolution was last year. At the beginning of the year, my goal was to make a podium in the CMS and try to be among the top five of the Spanish Championship, participating with the national team was not even among my objectives. So, as you will see, the goals were more than fulfilled. This year I think it will be very interesting because one thing is to arrive and another is stay. I think we are going to have a lot of competitiveness in the national events, without clear favorites, which will make I have to be very careful in all the championships. A.Laborda

Jimenez

It is clear that the SUP has entered fully into your family, we know that all of them like to go rowing. How is it to share trips, adventures and championships with all of them? Well, my father and I started as a way of going out to exercise when it was not windy and now we are the four of home, plus an aggregate, paddling together. Also, this year I have my brother training very hard, which is perfect for me to have a training part-ner who also has the same team as me. That makes competition trips much more comfortable ... we take it as a family vacation. What are your preferred conditions in the SUP? Downwind, upwind, waves, etc... To compete the truth is that I really like that it is flat and without wind, but to train or have fun I think there is nothing better than a downwind. I have not had the opportuni-ty to do many, but I think the best of this sport. It is an incredible feeling.

Up Suping

What are your favorite places to go paddling and enjoy the surroundings? The SUP is a complement to disconnect from your daily life? Burriana it´s ideal, we can leave with conditions in front of the Club or go paddling to the port and train flat water. Going out to paddle serves me a lot to disconnect from work and evade a few daily responsibilities. How do you see Stand Up Paddle nationally and internationally, and how do you see yourself in it in a short future? I believe that the SUP is growing exponentially, however, we must take care of the quarry that in the end is the future of this sport. Internationally, in my opinion, there are too many circuits and championships; It should be unified a little more, but I think it disperses a lot. Even so, this is a sign that there is interest in organizing and partici-pating in tests.

Thanks to… I would like to thank WET TARIFA (FANATIC & ION), since from the first day they trust-ed me and helped me as much as possible. Also to the City Council of Burriana, Di-putación de Castellón, Infisport and CLADES COMPOSITES (with whom I just signed recently and have bet strongly for me). Obviously also to my family, my girl and my coach who have made all this possible.

GlaGla Race. Up Suping

Possibly we start repeating the same words as the chronicle of this event in its edition of 2018. But the reality is that: the GlaGla Race is one of the events that grows most in participation from around the world! Neither the cold stops it, because perhaps that is one of its virtues, going against the current model known for a SUP Race competition around the world thanks to its climate and environment. It is not easy to stay among TOP events worldwide, but Benoit and his team have already achieved it. It is inevitable to think of going to Talloires, the French Alps, and not to be aware of the weather forecasts prior to this event. Winter in Europe has not been as cold as previous years, and an anti-cyclone offered us a great sunny day during the day of the competition. The snow was perched on the high peaks and not as close to Lake Annecy as it was last year. Even so, all the images that entered our retinas were true postcards.

The day dawned cold, with -3ยบ of temperature that as the day went by and with the help of the sun, it was very enjoyable. More than 650 competitors were prepared in the entire area of the event, the same as in previous editions and very well organized: giant heated tent, area to leave the material, brands exhibiting their material, coffee and hot tea, etc. Being the 1st major SUP race event in Eu-rope, the reunion of riders and friends is very noticeable; exchanging talks and catching up with the world of Stand Up Paddle. The deployment of media has been impressive, with the assistance of photographers and cameras from different parts of France and Europe. And of course the great work of Christopher Parker of SUP Racer and all his team, in addition to our live broadcast and other media of this sport. You have already seen the videos and images after the event ... awesome!

Up Suping

Watching the start of the competition from the water has been something incredible. No words for us, since we had never seen anything similar with so many riders in the water. In this edition more competitors from different parts of Spain joined, it has been wonderful to see them enjoying themselves in the water. Throughout the competition we have retained wonderful images, but the first and the most beautiful has been to see everyone turn on the first buoy. As if it were a long line of people taking out to see a music concert when there was no buying online, or one of the drone that was in the lake, which gave us images where they looked like ants looking for a better place to survive . And of course, all this adorned with hundreds of houses at the lake, we even spotted several cas-tles. As the minutes passed, that line of competitors grew longer and longer...even though the top 20 would set their pace apart, until they almost reached the finish line. But those who also made the difference were those participants who had those big smiles on their faces. With all kinds of clothing, either neoprene or special suit to avoid getting wet, in each row you could see them enjoying themselves. And since it was not going to be like that! They were rowing and participating in one of the most prestigious events in the world. Here we must highlight

Up Suping

Up Suping

the large number of amateur participants...buff...it was amazing! And more girls and younger than in previous editions, either on rigid boards or inflatables. Last year the bad weather in the second part of the day prevented to see the rest of activities, but this year the sun and stability reigned without hesitation. So we could see the competition of the Dragon Tables of the Red Paddle brand and the technical race, where we could see a high number of participants and with a very demanding course, where all the attending public could enjoy on the shores of Lake Annecy. This route has a portage that entertained people a lot, where the rider had to get out of the water with his board and rowing, to pass near a flag and then return to the water; usually they did it at full speed and this generated an occasional accident with water, perfect for the enjoyment of the public. Of course, the post competition environment was very good with the food trucks and the drinks stands for our delight. Delicious craft beer in the area, unfortunately we do not remember its name but we will find out. The support of many brands from the Stand Up Paddle and the Talloires area is fundamental in this event, giving it a very “alpine touch and different to any SUP event we know.

After 2 consecutive years watching the GlaGla Race live, we still recommend that you have to do this test on occasion. Your organization, the number of participants from different parts of the world, the essence of the Alps and its surroundings, gastronomy and many other things make you want to come back again and again after trying it. We are already counting the days for 2020 and I’m sure we will see the participation records again. The images in this article say it all, you have to be there and live it.

W hen the winter presses you inside with cold and rain for several days in a row,

it is inevitable to think about changing the chip. Let the humidity dry, change the air. And if to all this you add a need to change the chip and get new strength, then I just thought of southern Spain. And curiously there was an area that was between the eyebrows and that he did not know. Surely you are angry when someone says to you: “But do not you know this place? You do not know what you’re missing! ¨ And a thousand more reasons that make you end up pissed off and decide to go there once and for all. Well, that happened to me and my family. We took the trip to attend the Costa del SUP Gala and the presentation of its 2019 circuit in Benalmádena, to escape a few days from one of the southern paradises ... Meca’s Years! There is much, much, much to see in this land. So much so that this article aims to ignite a spark within you to know Caños, its people and everything it offers them. And if you already know, simply enjoy our experience. It has fitted us with such a good climate, that we have had the opportunity to do crossings and also enjoy very good waves sessions (always respecting the locals). Crystalline waters on bottoms of stones, I already start to wonder....

A s I said, among many trips that can be done in the area, we take advantage of the ideal day to gather a

few friends, and enjoy and know from the water the cliffs of La BreĂąa. Dani, Juanlu and I were captained by the great Antonio Morillo for this excursion. As soon as we started we stopped, taking advantage of the low tide, on the reefs where Antonio went in search of some hedgehogs and delight us with his spectacular taste of the sea. A delicacy!...we only lacked white wine (laughs).

Moving towards Barbate, we will see the different pine forests that this natural park has; Many just flush with the cliffs. And this accompanied by a sea with a gentle lift, spotting the bottoms between sand and rocks (I will never stop hallucinating with the color of the sea in this area, it is a marvel). High walls of rock, earth and trees made us look away and contemplate spectacular nature.

Of course, Antonio was informing me of every piece of history where we were rowing. And another

very important thing: seeing the African continent on the horizon at all times. At that time I was just thinking that I was paddling over waters with high mixtures of cultures with many centuries of history. As we proceeded, the water began to have a more greenish color ... and curiously we were facing the Green Beach, where we stopped under the famous “Water Curtain”: a spring that comes out of the cliff to land on the sea. Almost automatically and with the idea of freshening up a bit, we left our boards and paddles in the sand under the cliff, and we took a dip under the waterfall ... pure magic!

At that time they join the group Paco and Marina, who were paddling from the area of the lighthouse of Trafalgar. Then, we move a little to see Punta Paloma, a very beautiful enclave inhabited by these birds. The ¨levante¨ wind continued blowing and we decided return made a pleasant downwind. Atention, We have been told that a very clean downwind can be made from Caños de Meca, area of the Trafalgar lighthouse to Conil. And you can also take the ¨poniente¨ wind from Caños to Barbate.

Some of you already know the waves of Caños, but just tell you that the ¨Club Cangrejo Moro¨ has a high partici-

pation of surfing members in these waters and it is wonderful to have shared with them many hours of surfing. Always respect with the locals and security with our SUP in each wave. I repeat, the color of the water and its transparencies have made me crazy, for me it has been like transporting me to some point of the Canary Islands. I have been lucky to surf practically every day, there was one that the sea gave us spectacular waves and also coinciding with great friends from the south of the country. And once again, accompanied by the sun, water temperature and spectacular environment, an awesome lighthouse at our feet and endless adjectives... Nor can I forget other “SUPers” in the Cadiz area with which I have shared good sessions and nice talks. The potential that SUP has here is really big and future generations are already realizing it.

B esides the SUP, the sea and all its essence, I have been able to enjoy with the family the local gas-tronomy

and the wonderful tuna of Barbate. Wow, men...what a delight! And I recommend you visit Vejer de la Frontera, a beautiful village on the banks of the river Barbate that was in the hands of both the romans and muslims, and christians on several occasions. A lot of history on walls and castles on top of a mountain. And our home during these days in Caños was in “La Casita”, a spectacular bungalow on the beach with the best possible ameni-ties and well cared for by Antonio and her family. I leave the link for more information here.

O n our last day in this paradise, and with the sea practically flat, I made a short trip to the shores of the

Trafalgar lighthouse, passing through the different surf points of the Caños. It is also something impressive the reef that is at low tide near the lighthouse, no wonder that good waves come out in this place, much lovely by longboarders from all over the country. Of course, I do not recommend paddling to the beach of Trafalgar, because it is an area of high currents, and try to get out of them, you can leave your lungs there...so do not try. But you can leave the material on the beach and go for a beer in the Ohana to cool off, and return to the sea. I have written all these lines with my heart, and I have stopped quite a lot. They have been glorious days lived in Caños de Meca, and having done it with the family, then much more special for me. I have great images in my eyes of other glorious moments with Antonio and friends. You will have to go to Caños de Meca and discover it. The south is necessary. Absolute therapy. The Congost de Montrebei has been the venue chosen to premiere the SUP season. A spectacular environment that has left without words the riders who have descended by the famous canyon. The test began on Saturday March 23, with the checking in a hotel in Lleida, where the official dinner of the test was also held. The following morning, at 10:00hs, the start of this first SUP event took place, which according to its organizers, “was the first of many”.

King’s Canyon has had two route. The shortest one, of 6.4 km., It left from the Masieta, the northernmost point of the Congost, and crossing the high walls, it arrived until the Footbridge of Montfalcó, where it was turned to return to the initial point. The long route, loaded of some of the best national riders, was 17,4 kms., that arrived until the pier of Corçà. The first to complete the long journey has been the young Tomás Sánchez Vecino.

The organization has qualified the test of resounding success, with a participation of about 70 riders. Undoubtedly, the natural and wild environment have been one of the factors that most liked the participants of the contest. The 2020 edition will be held on the weekend of March 21 and 22.

¨ES A VERY BIG PRIDE TO BRING THE COLORS OF THE PERU FOR THE WORLD AND THAT THE NAME OF MY COUNTRY BE HEARD OUT ...

GIANNISA VECCO Up Suping

Schofield. ISA. Vecco

Hello Giannisa! Pucallpina of heart, tell us about your beginnings in sports and your introduction to Stand Up Paddle. Hello, I am proud to be pucallpina, to be “charapa” (as people in the Peruvian Amazon call us). I started doing professional sport when I moved to Lima, 11 years ago. I started playing Field Hockey at 33, an unusual age in the sports world. This experi-ence took me to the sport that would mark my life: the Stand Up Paddle. In 2013 I at-tended a beach hockey meeting and saw people doing SUP, since I saw her, I knew I wanted to be there. Remar was not an outside experience, when I was a teenager my grandmother gave a canoe to me, my brother and my cousin. I grew up in the jungle and that gave us the privilege of having lagoons at home and using the canoe every weekend. This experi-ence allowed me to feel comfortable with the rowing from the start. The initial chal-lenge was to maintain balance despite the movement of the waves, I tried it little by little on a board all around, each time I rowed it went further. When I felt more secure I did my first race, without knowing it I had registered in one of the selective ones to the ISA world cup in Nicaragua in 2014. I finished a marathon in a table all around 10’ x 35¨ and thanks to that I was invited to to be part of the national team and to travel after 2 months to my first world ... since that day I did not stop to practice this incredi-ble sport! Schofield

How is the SUP in your life How was the support of your family from the first mo-ment until today? The SUP is part of my day to day. I train in the water 6 times a week and exercising in the gym. My family understands what I do very well and has always supported me. Many times my daughters accompany me to the beach and we share nice moments. I try to maintain balance with my family life, I think without that understanding, competing would not be easy.

ISA

Your career as a competing is already strong. What things stand out of each event you go, to including the trips? What does this sport give you emotionally and sportingly? Each competition is a new experience and accumulating them helps me improve my performance, it’s not about winning or losing, but learning from each one and strengthening myself as a rider. I learn a lot from each place, from the conditions that are presented and from the people I know. The balance between being a competitor, traveling and having a family motivates me a lot, I try to make every moment away from home worthwhile, giving the best of me in each competition. How was your experience participating in different tests of the EuroTour 2018? For me it was incredible, my first experience competing on a really professional level. I met wonderful people, part of the global Stand Up Paddle family. Competing for 5 con-secutive weeks definitely marked a before and after my sports career, because in Peru we still have very few competitions. I would really love return this 2019, I hope every-thing goes in the best way to do some events. 48

What do you feel representing Peru all over the world? It is a great pride to carry the colors of Peru around the world and for the name of your country to be heard outside. I love that more and more people know that in Peru there are excellent conditions for the practice of Stand Up Paddle. Peru is an incredible country that has much to offer the world sport, waves, culture, adventure, nature.

What are your usual spots to go paddle with your board or surf some waves? I practice a lot on the Costa Verde, which is the most important circuit of beaches in Lima. Along its route unites several districts such as Chorrillos, Barranco, Miraflores, etc. It is an amazing place to practice SUP race and SUP surf. It has more than 8 km. of beaches with different conditions, so I go there looking for the best conditions according to the day.

Schofield Onexe

How do you focus your training sessions and how are the moments before the competitions? I have been training with Larry Cain&PDL Monster for over a year and also doing phys-ical preparation with Gabriel Hernandez of the Surf Federation of Peru. Right now, the priority is focused on the Panamerican Games Lima 2019, which is the most important sporting event in America after the Olympic Games. At first I usually feel calm, but as the date approaches I get nervous, however I trust in the work of so many years and that helps me to calm down.

Schofield

How is the evolution of SUP in your country? The SUP in Peru is growing, in a weekend you can see more than 20 people paddling in SUP along the green coast. This means that there are more and more sports people, but growth has been a bit slower than in neighboring countries such as Argentina, Chile and Ecuador, where there are eventos with more than 40 people. I would like the Pan-American Games to make visible the SUP in Peru and finally strengthen its growth.

What other international events would you like to go to? Do you have any in par-ticular to perform? I would love to do many races that I have not yet been able to attend in Australia, USA, and the SUP11 City Tour in Holland and the Molokai...but I will do them much later.

How far do you think this sport can go in your life? Actually, I think more about it ¨until when¨, and the answer is until the body allows me. Thinking ¨until where¨, I can not think of anything else but SUP in my life. I have many dreams to fulfill and I think I want to go after them. Thanks to... To my family, to Alfredo, Maria Cristina and María Paula...above all, for their great support on a day today basis. My coaches, my friends and my sponsors.

The Mediterranean Circuit of SUP Race 2019 it´s on

Up Suping

Central de SUP. Up Suping

attended the first hour of the morning at the Arenal beach to pick the lycra, dorsal chip and other material offered by the Paddle Surf Burriana organization, which has been impeccable throughout the day. As usual, this circuit also attracts competitors from other communities such as Catalonia, Madrid or Andalucia; and its media impact every day is more forceful.

The second edition of the Open of SUP Burriana was the introduction of the CMS 2019. Awesome SUP mediterranean circuit and with the increase of participation and evolution of the youngest riders. There was a desire to compete again, many...and that clubs from all over the Mediterranean were back together. Under a spectacular day of sunshine and good weather, more than a hundred participants 52

The competition began with the youngest guys, from the SUB8 to the SUB16 category, always with the full support of the public, coaches, club mates and families. We will not tire of saying that this is the base of the SUP and we must to take care a lot, let them enjoy and teach them the values of this sport. That’s exactly what their faces reflect when they cross the finish line after striving in the water, with a big smile and with great companionship. After all, they will learn what we teach them. Great staging of the competition area, refreshments, tents for athletes, etc...a wonder.

The tours were very attractive for all the public, near the beach and perfectly visible with different buoy turns. The SUB18 and amateurs warmed up a bit more the competition environment with large participation in these categories. New SUP race lovers are already participating in the competition with the amateur category and now it is only a matter of continuing to participate in other events and to learn a little more. These riders take it as seriously as the Elite riders.

And of course, the culmination of the day competition would be for this category previously mentioned. With almost 60 participants, adding the SUB18, the riders were waiting for 10 kms. of pure emotion. Remember that it was the first stop of CMS 2019 and of course, they had to give everything in the water. And not only between opponents, also in oneself to assess how was the pre season. Also in the Elite category we have seen new faces, from several competitors who made the jump to this category after having spent several years in amateur. That makes us very happy.

C.D.S

During the first kilometers of the competition, we have seen all the riders with a great level, standing out from the first moment competitors of Mar Balear and Parres Watersports in men and women, among other clubs.

C.D.S

But not everything was going to be easy, because this race expected a great surprise to all competitors: a portage of more than 50 meters which we have baptized ¨the leg killer¨. Every event has to have something special, and in Burriana’s is this. You already know that when we find ourselves with a portage, the body has to completely change its posture and functioning that it had been doing minutes before; where the legs are the most affected. For these riders it was very important to decide at what pace to pass this portage and then return to the water passing from one area of the beach to another. The spirits of the people were also very important for the “SUPers”, as well as those who threw water on their heads to withstand the hot day ... C.D.S

C.D.S

C.D.S

C.D.S

Then they would have another portage but softer on the finish line to return to make one more lap to the circuit. At this point, there was a great fight in the first positions with Enrique Hurtado and Aaron Sanchez from Mar Balear, Rafa Sirvent from Parres Watersports and James Van Drunen from Central de SUP. The girls who were leading the race were all from Mar Baelar: Laura Quetglas, Nuria Hurtado, Duna Gordillo and Sonia Caimari; crossing the finish line in these same positions.

C.D.S

The competition was more entertaining with the upwind sections, downwind and soft sidewind areas. We saw that James’ rhythm was being very big with Rafa very close to him. But James did not let down at any time, crossing the finish line and winning this category in the first test of the CMS2019. Rafa did the same 8 sec. later, the same time it would take Aaron to achieve the 3rd position.

C.D.S

The race pace was very high and for all the riders, where we also highlight the great result of Nando Gómez crossing the finish line between the top 6. Iván de Frutos continues to grow as a competitor, achieving first place in SUB18, and without forgetting Salva Mora, winner of the category Master 40 male and Afro Russian Master 40 female, and Michel Cardell in Kahuna +50. The ¨ImserSUP¨, as we affectionately call them from Up Suping, are a fundamental part of this sport in events to give the example to the youngest.

C.D.S

C.D.S C.D.S

After the competition, awards ceremony at the El Pilón restaurant, it was then something very nice to see the entire dining room with all the people of the event eating a delicious paella and other delicacies. Of course, the talks and the impressions of the first race of the circuit; and talking about the topicality of SUP in all its aspects. 58

C.D.S

From Up Suping we want to thank Angel Ania and the entire Burriana team for our presence and treating us so well. Pure happiness to have watched the start of the CMS 2019 and see many new faces paddling in the Mediterranean sea. Finally, congratulations once again to the clubs for their base work and to the families of those little ones who are giving so much joy to this sport. This is just beginning...now to train for Patacona!

SALVADOR MORILLO Y QUECO PÉREZ

(President and Vice-president Club Cangrejo Moro) The Cangrejo Moro Club started with our parents’ idea of preserving the environment. It is a crab typical of the area. When our parents told us that we should look for crabs, they told us that the females would have to be left for their correct proliferation. For us this is an icon, in addition to the lighthouse of Trafalgar. Starting with the club emerged 2 years ago and immediately, with 33 mem-bers and with the idea of uniting criteria and supporting youth in contact with nature. And everything related to the sea, the most important thing, which is the essence of surfing.

We are very happy for our sporting growth: we have champions of several competitions in surfing and SUP, and currently with 45 partners in the entity. To belong to the Crab Moro we have two conditions: to be or have a property in the Caños de Meca and that has the endorsement of 5 part-ners, someone who does not present antecedents and zero localism. The atmosphere inside the club is fantastic, even people from the rest of Cadiz want to be partners...we are very happy! During our trips, people hallucinate with the logo of our club and it is already a name with deep roots. We always insist that in each beach there should be a registered club, insured people, etc. 60

(Salvador started with windsurfing, then kite and then discovered the SUP at age 50. He only looked at the sea when there was wind, not now, more than 40 years ago he was one of the first to do windsurfing, competing in waves and with great results.) (Queco began with the SUP at the same time as Salvador, they were the first in this region) As for the surf points on this beach, we all get along well. We respect the surfing locals and we know that with SUP it is easier to catch waves than with surfing, we are aware of that. Here the points are diversified and there is space for everyone.

This year we will go more club members to events throughout the country, from the SUB8 to the masters and we think about going to the championships of Spain, Iberian championship and Eu-roTour tests and the Costa del SUP circuit. We are training and with great enthusiasm, where we will also collaborate with the SUP Race test in Conil. We believe that the SUP Race is a very demanding sport and we pay a lot of attention, especially in the smallest ones. It is very accessible, as you already know and the climate we have is ideal for it. In this modality, we have 3 girls competing and about 18 boys. 61

The club started with adult people who come to paddle and practised this sport like any other, as time went by we assembled a small group to training on Saturday morn-ings and without realizing in two years the group grew and we already had two groups, children and juniors... See grow the club was something very nice, we grew all together, since this sport is very young and we always try to evolve to give them the best. It has not been easy since the material is very expensive and we did not have many re-sources. Today after 7 years we can say that this season will be the first in which all children have their own board, to train and compete, so for us are something incredible... Our goal has always been to do club, play sports and enjoy these sportsmen, who prefer to be in the club than anywhere else. For us the Club is our family 66

Aida Soberbio

How is the atmosphere among your friends? Do they help each other a lot and cheer up each training and competition? As everyone can see in the competitions the atmosphere among all of us is: good vibes and we are an amazing group. I no longer consider them my companions for the simple fact that almost all of us have grown up together and spend a great part of our time in the club, we could say that we are a great family. Although we do not have the same affinity with all of us, we support each other when necessary. I feel very fortunate to be able to train in a club like this because in the training sessions we cheer up and we motivate ourselves, which helps us to raise the level. In addition, in the competitions, all the equipment is in the finish line or even moving of buoy to buoy to animate and to give support. When you arrive you are all there to give you a big hug, we had a great time and we lived incred-ible and unforgettable experiences together.

Duna Gordillo

How are the trainings with Laura and Manolo? What do you like most about them? The training is very fun and hard same time, Manolo is the one that organizes the training that we are going to do both in the water and in the gym. Sometimes, when we do something wrong, Manolo and Laura teach us to improve it...even though sometimes it’s hard to accept things. They help us a lot in both the training and the studies because, if we do not approve, we stop doing fun things. In this club, we are like a big family and although in some training we shout and insult (laughs) always from respect, we all get along very well. What I like about them, is that they are always there for what we need and they help us since we were small. But what I like the most about Laura and Manolo is that if you have a problem that you do not know who to tell them about, they will always be there to help you.

Aaron SĂĄnchez Tell us how are the trips with the whole team to different places in Spain to go compete and see the rest of riders friends. For me, travelling with the team is one of the best experiences I can experience. In my case, is a privilege because I do not consider them friends, but I feel I am part of a family. In my opinion, the trips serve me to unify with my team, it also serves to gain experience in the field of racing and meet other riders and friends from outside. In part to compare the level to which I am, but also the laughs, jokes and spend time together. The only bad thing about traveling with the team is the farewell since you have to go back to the routine. But in general, travel is an experience that I recommend living.

Lucas Simoncelli

How many days per week do you dedicate to SUP and what do you like most about this sport? Trainings, walks, waves, etc‌ We train on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 17:00hs to 19:00hs and on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00, but on Tuesdays and Thursdays can go whomever you want, there will always be someone to train with. What I like most is to go surfing with the long or with the surfboard because it is something we almost never do, because in Mallorca there are very few waves but I also like the days we do downwinds, which is something that we also do little because we have to go to another place and take the boards with the trailer. 68

Pepe Alvarez

Surely you remember when it was the first time you stood on a SUP board. What things do you think have improved since then? One of the first things that I have improved has been stability on the board, since when I started in this sport it was quite difficult and it cost me a lot. To continue, we could say that I have improved in pushing the table with the legs, since that gives you an impulse to move faster. My paddling style has been improving especially the technique of how to introduce it and get it out of the water in the best possible way and not throw away the paddle back, rather have to sink it. I have also improved to make more turns fast putting one foot on the back of the board, which implies the improvement of being able to “walk” on the table that helps us on different occasions.

Carme Mar torell

Besides SUP, what other activities does Balearic Sea offer you? What other hob-bies do you have? The Balearic Sea, apart from the SUP, offers you many other aquatic activities such as diving, kayaking, sailing, surfing...When there are waves or conditions to do a down-wind, we load the trailer and go in a van to any coastal site of the island: Son Serra, Can Pastilla, Paguera. In summer, we help Laura with a SUP campus and other activities offered by the club, it’s very fun! We do kayak, paddle or walking trips to beautiful coves, snorkelling, beach games, teach how to paddle...In addition to SUP and the other activities we do with the club, I do swimming and pilates.

Quique Hur tado

Within the Mar Barlear team, of the first teammates who took the name of the team to the top ... what was your reference? Being part of a club implies having colleagues with whom you share goals and, in a certain way, they also become referents, because when someone does something better than you aspire to do it equal or better than that person. Focusing the question more on me, I would highlight Manolo Simoncelli and Laura Quetglas, that when I started paddling they represented the greatest exponent of this sport at the national level along with Pepe Oltra and Víctor Blanes. It is also worth mentioning my teammates, especially Toni Martí who managed to place himself among the important names of the sport at a national level with only 17-18 years old, which motivated me to strive even harder to achieve my goals.

Nuria Hur tado

We have seen that you have attended international events. How has your experi-ence and what have you learned the most? When we went to international events, personally my experience was very good because I was very captivated by the atmosphere that was felt in the competition between so many international competitors and people like us who was going to compete in such an important event for the first time. Being able to attend the event accompanied by a large part of my team its fantastic, we are a reference of support and mutual motivation. What I learned the most was to interact with people from different countries and cultures, I also learned some-thing from the local language and obviously I learned a little more about what companionship and good competitiveness are.

Marc Simoncelli

How is the support that your family gives you to be paddling in the best direction? In my house, sport is considered to be a very important part of our education and that is why I have all the support I need. Besides that my father is the coach, he supports me twice and everything is easier. Not only do they support me in paddle surfing, but any sport also supports me.

Sergi Nadal

From the outside you are like a big family. In addition to your colleagues from Mar Balear...do you have more “SUPers friends in other communities or tours? Of course, more and more. Every time we go to a competition we meet new people and make new friends, we always get together and westing each other or we make jokes and laugh, in this way we enjoy competitions much more, because apart from taking the experience of having competed, we also take the one of having met new people or having a good time with competitors that we do not usually see the rest of the year. In addition, when you arrive at a competition you feel welcomed as you see familiar faces, although the community also grows because more people join to practice this sport. 70

Mille Holm

Do your teammates from other categories cheer you up from the outside while you are competing? Yes, my colleagues encourage me a lot when I’m competing and it helps me a lot to give everything. It makes me happy when I hear them cheering me up and gives me energy.

Sonia Hur tado

What has cost you the most to learn and what do you do best when paddling? What has cost me more to learn has been the technique when paddling, so that the shovels are more efficient and slide the board, however simple it may seem, is a rather complex technique. Every day our coaches, Laura and Manolo, help us to improve the small details, they do it with advice and visual examples. What I do best is paddling in flat sea, since, being more stable, I can pay more attention to the technique, which helps me to be more comfortable and faster. Otherwise, when the sea is more unstable, I have to pay most of my attention to maintain stability and I can not focus so much on the movements that I do with the paddle when I take the stroke in the water.

Sonia Caimari

Laura and Manolo must have a lot of work with all of you. What things do you like most about them? It all started 6 years ago, I found my passion in Paddle Surfing but I must men-tion that it would not be so special if Laura and Manolo did not train me. They are for me an example to follow both in the field of sport and personally. They have always helped me in everything and the fact that they have seen me grow has created a great bond between us. Manolo is a dedicated, constant and responsible person. He is in charge of doing all the planning of the training and since I was little he has taught me that I have to make an effort to get the things that matter to me, without excus-es. And Laura is a very positive and fun girl because she always trains with us and makes us enjoy training and when we go out of a competition we always learn something from her because being so many kids always has some inconvenience and she tries to solve it from the best possible way. She is responsible for planning all the trips we make.

Bruno Hasulyo A new stage ...

Up Suping

EuroTour. SUP11 City Tour. Bruno Hasulyo

How were your beginnings in the SUP with your brother and the support of all your family? Well as both my parents were pro athletes and they both have numerous sport degrees in their pockets, sport has always been a big part of my life! They showed us every kind of sports and be-cause of this we always had a healthy competitive mind with Dan-iel. My passion for water sports started when I was 7 with windsurfing, then in 2010 was the first time I stood on a stand up paddle board and straight after that in 2011 we paddled a world record. Daniel my family and ME we paddled 2000km in 38 days, from the black forest till the black sea! from then on I knew that this is the sport for me!

Beginnings of the Hasulyo brothers

What SUP technical differences are there between Daniel and you? Do you have the same style of paddling? My technique during the past few years has changed a lot. The basics were teached to me by Jeremy Stephenson in New Zealand, and broth to a world class level thanks to the SEPA academy. As everyone can see we have totally dif-ferent bodies with Daniel, so also our style of paddling is pretty different and now that we are using different paddles and boards I guess there is even a bigger difference. What type of food and workouts do you do? Your physical form is admirable! I believe in nature, so that’s way I choose natural and or-ganic products as my nutrition. I try to always go local and organic, even if it´s hard with all the travelling. SEPA’s special method is not only giving me the best trainings, but al-so helps me to choose the perfect nutrition for my everyday life for a faster recovery and a better performance! What kind of conditions do you like? Flatwater, downwind, beach race, etc... If someone thinks that I like this or that, is wrong. I like eve-ry conditions, because all of them teach me something. Some conditions helps my strength, other helps my concentration and balance but the most important is the humility and respect for nature! 73

2018 was a great year with many good SUP race competitions all over the planet. What are your favorite events? My favorite race last year was the SUP11 city, is race that gives me the most joy and suffering, so I will have to go with that one! For me is not only an event in my race cal-endar, is the EVENT! Only the world cup gets the same attention. I´m usually training especially for that event for two months, every year!

We have seen that you perform clinics in different events. Are you a good teacher? What are your teaching objectives?

Tell us about Ligth Board Corp and your dedication today with this brand and its SUP boards. When I left my old Team, I had one goal in front of me. Join a team that can make me the best paddler of the world! LIGHT-BOARDCORP not only makes the fastest, lightest SUP boards, to-gether with Nelo, but they also support me as a Team behind me. They provide me everything for a world class work! Trainers with SEPA, paddles with BRACA-Sport, incredible location for training at the Douro Academy in Porto. All them together is my secret and dedication!

I have to start with clearing that I not a coach or trainer, I´m a world champion and I can share my knowledge about how to paddle right and efficiently. During my clinics I make sure that everyone learns how to use and enjoy SUPing at it finest! My goal is to make people fall in love with this beautiful sport. Off course I also do racing clinics wher, for more advanced pad-dlers, I share my knowledge about racing and performing under pressure.

74

We know that you are currently living between Barcelona and Portugal. What is the reason? Are we going to see you in more European events? Yes, I moved back to Europe after a few years in Asia. I believe that the sport of SUP is growing at it finest here in Europe and I want to be part of this growth. I have spent some moths in Barcelona, but now I´m living in Porto. The Nelo factory is here, where we are working on the new generation LIGHTBOARDCORP rockets, and on top of that the water conditions here are incredi-ble! At the Douro academy I have every condition possible within one training session, downwind, surf, flat, everything! Do you do some kind of recovery after a hard race? Yes I do! Sleep a lot. I believe that without the right amount of rest you can not perform at your finest so that’s why I partnered up with DAGSMEJAN a high performance sleep wear that helps me sleep better and recover faster ! Is a sleep wear reinvented! How do you describe the influence of SUP on a physical, mental and emotional level on you? Many people, in many places have already described the benefits of SUP, for ME this experience is in the wide range between work and relax! I would suggest everyone, at sunrise, to grab a SUP board and head out into the ocean and look and feel the sunrise, and then there’s no question about what this sport gives us. NAISH ALANA VARIO 75

The Naish’s star paddle for girls. And not only for its design, but for all the advantages it has at the material level to carry out both crossing and surfing. Very light. Paddle 75 inch and 100% carbon in its entirety, offers more stability than it seems; that translates into comfort and fluency. It is the female version of the Naish Carbon Plus Vario 80 paddle, with a new anti twist adjustment system that prevents the knob from turning, always being aligned with the paddle. Flexible and lightweight pole, when force is applied, it holds on to the whole hand. In waves he behaves very well, especially when you are already surfing and you have to change the hand paddle; It is appreciated to gain time and agility in the surfing that develops. When you have a shovel of 75, the fluidity of the shovel quickly removes the water and you do not lose time of paddling. We have even forced her flexibility to the limit and the behavior in that is exceptional. Physically we liked it a lot, since hours after having been paddling with waves several kilometers, our body has not presented any type of discomfort, or stiffness. Its EVA rubber handle offers a lot of comfort and grip, and it hardly suffers from the skin of our hands. Aesthetically we liked its design and colors, it makes it unique for girls. The Alana is already more than consolidated in that. To highlight: with the edges in ABS the shovel is protected against blows and lateral rubbing.

80

NAISH CARBON PLUS 95

A great improvement over the previous year’s model. While it maintains the anti twist system so that the knob is aligned with the paddle and the handle of EVA rubber, the sensations when using it are of greater lightness and smoothness. With its size of 95 inch, this paddle is ideal for everything. That is, to make a trip, a crossing and even surf...especially for those who start in the SUP. Oh! Do not be scared by the size of the paddle, it does not look like a shovel of 95 because of its 100% carbon and its balance.

The flexibility of the pole is very good with 85% carbon, does not generate more effort than you should do when paddling and absorbs perfectly all tension. Very comfortably, even in upwind and downwind. At the time of printing speed, the water outlet of the paddle is very good. And due to its lightness, it goes very fast and fluid to the place where we want to take it.

In waves we were quite surprised especially with the flexibility of the pole as before we comment-ed, being able to realize several rowed in search of the wave without much effort. In surfing, it of-fers very good grip and support on the wall of the waves. Much security, and that is very important for those who start in this modality. It is very grateful to return to the peak without having to perform largeefforts, his paddle takes us comfortably. Highlight: with the edges in ABS the paddle is protected against blows and lateral rubbing. In gen-eral it is like carrying a fixed and very durable paddle. Its design and colors have also pleased us, keeping the Naish line of the entire 2019 material range.

NORTH SUMATRA

This is a trip from the Canary Islands to the north of Sumatra, passing through Kualalumpur, Medรกn, Singapour and Bali. A few flights to cover the more than 15.000km. that separate us, almost half of the circumference of the earth only to surf solitary waves, far from the crowds to which we are accustomed.

Gerovรกn Abreu

Assuming the risk, we decided to travel out of season to the island located to the north of Sumatra, where westernization has not yet devoured nature, culture or the idiosyncrasy of its people. We find ourselves with an overflowing nature with jungles, impenetrable palm groves and paradisiacal beaches. Almost all the waves break on coral with little depth, fast, vertical and with the typical almond profile that we like so much. Perfect for interlacing both SUP and surf baths.

I travelled with my Wasp Rush 7.0 designed expressly for this type of waves, a small, light and reactive board. To paddle, I opted for the 70 “inch2 carbon full SPS Paddles, very light and soft on the paddling, which is essential to withstand 3 weeks of intense surfing without the shoulders jumping through the air. Not far from our accommodation there was a “beach break” that they called “magnetic swell” because it seemed that magically absorbed the force of the ocean to overturn it in the form of waves on the beach. It took us a while to learn how to move around the island depending on the tides, the wind and the direction of the swell itself. We hired the occasional boat trip to surf waves that could not be accessed from land and were too far to go paddling. An experience that, without a doubt, was worth for the extremely wild and tropical landscape that was unfolding before our eyes.

We will not say that everything was idyllic because we also had to endure storms with a lot of “bumps and flat days, but we took advantage of those moments to relax, read and take walks in the area. Right in front of the surf camp broke a right wave that hollowed from the beginning to the end like a zipper, but that imposed considerable respect, not so much for its size, but because it had very little bottom and the coral does not give you a truce. It was a matter of trust and in a couple of days, we surf session after session as if we were at home.

It is difficult to define the sensations that you have when you are in a paradise like this, a real paradise, without any worry and plunged into the most sublime tranquillity, where the day to day is sleep, eat, surf and repeat... without a doubt, we will return.

STAND UP PADDLE around Picos de Europa

SURF

Manuel Ángle Toral Fernández

San Vicente de la Barquera a paradise for Stand Up Paddle Surf. And it is that this was one of those pleasant surprises that you take when you are immersed in the compilation of material for a future project, that project is the one that marks the line of my collaborations in this publication, and it is none other than the book “Stand Up Paddle Surf around the Picos de Europa “, and this location could not miss, I knew it was going to be a great place to paddling. A place with many layers or in colloquial terms: “tremendously enjoyed” for our fans and when I started reading about their history, directly “I got caught”. From the Paleolithic to our days, passing through the Orgenmescos, the Romans or arriving to its denomination of Apleca, it is strange that this place has been coveted by any civilization. modernity that is evident in that picture of small boats fishing next to large fishing vessels, we realize that the place has a special charm. A step after a small incursion into the marsh of the Pombo we rejoiced with a spectacular view from the centre of the bay, before us, the Old Puebla with two featured protagonists: the Castle of the King and the church of Santa Maria de Los Angeles. After talking and greeting with several sailors who prepared their fishing gear and boats, we directed our paddles passing under one of the 28 eyes of the bridge of the Maza, to the marsh of Rubin this way that gives us the view with two and up to the three massifs of the Picos de Europa...a great gift for these SUP fans!

Several are the remains of rafts, dams and other elements, some of the past and others in temporary rest, we are in this estuary of San Andres that will not neglect our attention, while we feed the spirit with the tranquillity that reigns...and yes, I have to repeat it again: and the incredible views we have! We exit through the same place we entered and say goodbye to a beautiful area, with a lot of history, tradition and a perfect place for a route. Back to home, but with a smile from ear to ear and the bag full of ¨sobaos and quesada¨. Neighbor Cantabria...come back and soon, THANK YOU !!

(Identification of mountain names by Ricardo and Toño)

As always and allow me the recommendation, for new routes, it is best to hire the services professions of a SUP school/guide. And also, as always, you can find more info in the relevant chapter of “Stand Up Paddle Surf around the Picos de Europa”.

¨ Whoever has followed the SUP race since its inception knows that beach races, along with downwinds, are the holy grail of SUP racing¨

RODRIGUEZ

Tell us about your passion for the “beach race” within the SUP. Your results competing in recent years have been wonderful! Battle of the paddle, Turtle Bay, US Open Sunset Beach with its demolishing beach waves, Jamie Mitchell’s “survivor” format and the new PPGAMES and Heavy Water events are the race format to which many like me, who come from windsurfing and surfing, we were hooked; dreaming of being in that type of event to break our noses without caring about the result, because what a beach race brings does not give you any other type of format, and it is the adrenaline rush. If you add to that, the more difficult the conditions, the harder it is to predict a result, you have an authentic lottery where it will not be only the strongest ones who always win, but they will be the luckiest at the time of pass the surfers and those who manage to surf the longest waves who can fight all the way to the podium. Forget about long drafts where the strongest will break the train a couple of meters before to give everything in an explosive sprint. In other words, a beach race is fun in its purest form.

100

Personally, in whichs I have participated and in which there have been difficult conditions, I could have been fighting on the podium, but I could not do anything in technical racing formats without waves where, as is evident, physically there is a very high level in the national scene.

This is the second year that the FES has opted for a Beach Race format, where there are waves and breaks, and I am very excited about this new stage because I have been waiting for this discipline for years.

What most fill you with this sport? What gratification gives you? Both the SUP waves and the race provide different things. A race table gives you the freedom to explore, train, surf, do downwinds, overcome personal and physical limits and challenges...all connected to the ocean, which is never the same and every day is there offering you new adventures. So a board of 14¨ gives you a multitude of options, something that no other discipline can give you. What are the best steps to make a great team of future riders? What kind of dedication do you give it?

Now I have started a new project from scratch in the capital of the island, a solo adventure, and I still have the same enthusiasm to create a new group, always faithful to my philosophy as a coach, seeking to convey that we have to sacrifice and fight for our goals but without leaving the fun aside.

jaran

I have been fortunate to grow as coach of the second largest national future team promises of SUP race. Club Onexe welcomed me in its beginnings and soon we had a large number of kids. As in any sport, keeping a handful of kids motivated is not easy, but the island of Fuerteventura offers you very good conditions throughout the year and allows you to paddle both in the bay, as in the open sea, and also surf, for what you keep that spark of motivation without falling into repetitive training routines. My purpose as a coach during my time at Onexe was to get us to have a benchmark in the beach race modality nationwide, and you only have to see the results of the team every time you go to events where conditions are difficult.

jaran

The climate of the Canary Islands in enviable! What qualities does Fuerteventura have for practising this sport? Fuerteventura has become during the last years instead of pilgrimage of riders from all over Europe during the winter season. In addition to the base of great athletes already consolidated. The climate, the lifestyle, the ease of access to the sea, the waves, the wind and, of course, the local people who are super cool. He who has come once repeats, and to whom he has not come, I invite him to come, which I will gladly host. How and when did the design of Stand Up Paddle boards come about? It all started in 2013 when I became SUP rider waves for the Sailboard Tarifa brand. For that year there was still no CNC machine in the workshop, so everything was done shaped by the great Pedro Vidar and the Boss, Sergio Alonso. After several years, at the end of 2015, I receive a call from the Boss in which he tells me to put the batteries with the software to create boards with the new CNC machine that was about to arrive. I could not believe it, it’s a great opportunity and today I’m very grateful because it lets me give free rein to my imagination. He had been insisting the Boss for many years, telling him that we had to make SUP RACE boards, all because at the beginning of 2014 he had started paddling in a race and was hooked. 102

Now, I have designed an infinity of models, both SUP waves, race, and touring and some models of surfboards, not only for SBT (Sailboardtarifa) but also for Foolmoon, a swiss brand with a strong international projection who has relied on me to design the entire range of rigid boards, from race to pro waves. My job at SBT is not only to design the boards, but also to try them out and get them out in all kinds of conditions. The island is perfect to test any type of board. Today, all SBT tables receive a personalized treatment on my part, since I work with the client and I adapt to their needs as a rider to take into account different aspects, volume and model according to the conditions in which go to use the board. Few brands can boast of creating boards in Europe customized in race, waves and windsurfing as SBT is doing.

Besides SUP, what other activities complete your life?

jaran

My life has been linked to water sports since I was little, until my studies, because I graduated in nautical and maritime transport. So being soaking all year is as normal for me as it is extremely necessary. When your work becomes your passion everything is complemented, and I think I can not be more involved in the SUP. Athlete, trainer, designer, tester, ambassador...so if you ask me what other activities complete my life outside the bubble of SUP and do not catch me training or enjoying other modalities such as surfing, prone, oc1, windsurf, etc...could Say that being with my partner and my family.

What sensations does SPS brand material offer after its 10 years in the market?

jaran

6 months ago, when I embarked on my project to open a SUP school in Puerto del Rosario, the first thing I thought was the inflatable boards for children, the 10´6 race. I had met Cesc once in an event and I knew that he was the first one I wanted to call, not only because he is a great guy, but because SPS is a national brand. Cesc offered to solve my problem and in a short time, I already had the 10´6 kid race ready. What brand does that for you?...none. Cesc created a board model that he needed from scratch, so I did not need to call anyone else. Another thing that has surprised me is the quality of their paddles, so much that I compete with them since I tried them. He has also relied on me this year to design a rigid SUP longboard that I hope will be a success.

We know that you also like SUP Surf and SUP Race. What other modalities do you still need to try or do you want to experiment? A descent by rapids in rivers would be something interesting, mainly because SPS has a great model. Cesc was explaining everything that had been innovated in the descent tables and I was blown away. But I have to say that I never cruise in river water, so I do not know how my body would react in fresh water (laughs).

Travelling and displacements to different events outside the Canary Islands is a very complicated subject. What are the most important points to try to improve this situation? Little can be done with a board of 4 meters at the time of travel, so we all know that travelling without your sports equipment and having to rent or borrow can ruin so many months of training. It would not be bad for the FES (spanish surf federation) to help with transport logistics, as it could be by establishing an agreement with a transport company. Let’s see if someone from the FES reads this and raises it in the assembly. For my part, I am already looking for transport companies to take the board to Pantín, since there are no direct flights to La Coruña and the airlines do not pick up such large boards when you have to transfer to airplanes with smaller capacity warehouses. 104

What would be your dream Trip? How far would you like to go with your SUP material? PPGAMES, SURVIVOR SUP, etc...any trip to events where there is a beach race and where one can stay a couple of days surfing. I do not have great ambitions as a rider, but rather to be able to continue enjoying health as long as I can, both competitively and professionally, and continue designing boards. What are your goals for this 2019? This year to be able to submit to several tests of the national beach race circuit will be a dream. This year be able to submit me to several tests of the national beach race circuit will be a dream. So to work hard to continue managing trips to events outside the Canary Islands. I take this opportunity to greet the ¨maturrangueros¨ from Suances and to tell them that this year I think to drink out all the beers that I could not take with them the last time.

First, to the Onexe Club, especially to Nayra Martínez for giving me the opportunity to grow as a coach with that great family of children that I will never forget. To the Hönscheid family, and especially to my great friend Sonni Hönscheid, for give me the opportunity to get on a SUP board for the first time. To Iballa Ruano, for his support and for letting me be a direct witness of his unstoppable evolution during all those training sessions together of SUP waves. To Susanne Lier, for giving me that push and for being the culprit that gave the jump to the discipline of race. Sergio Alonso (SBT), for trusting me and for giving me the opportunity to design boards. To Stephane Blanc, my coach, for showing me the values of an athlete and the sacrifice that accompany me in my day to day. Thank you for always being there. A Secret of the South, for supporting me these years. To Brunotti Spain, for facilitating my training both inside and outside the water. Cesc (SPS) for his help with the paddles, an extension of my body...do not change the shaft (laughs). To my great friend Gwen Marche, for always being there immortalizing the best moments. To my family, especially my mother and my aunt godmother. And finally to Nico (Up Suping), for giving me the opportunity to get to know a little inside this great family that we are all those who love and respect the sea and have as a means of union SUP. 105

APNEA SYNONYMOUS OF SECURITY ValentĂn Salas

Desde el mar. Up Suping

Now, sports are becoming more and more professional, the world of waves is not different, in these line of including technical knowledge of other disciplines to our sport, apnea is becoming fashionable, a discipline that It can be very beneficial for our surfing Obviously, our natural state will be on top of a wave and not under, but know how to manage those moments under them, know what happens to our body and how to act at each moment will make us face the waves, especially the bigger, in another way. 106

Apnea is a relatively young sport that has undergone a very important degree of specialization, thanks to great athletes like UMBERTO PELLIZARI or MIGUEL LOZANO, who apart from increasing knowledge with other disciplines such as yoga or medical studies, dedicate themselves with their academies to the development of their sport, making it accessible to everyone. With this article, we will give basic notions that every rider should know no longer as an athlete but on a personal level as a general culture.

We all know the importance of food for our body, how it influences and what habits are more or less healthy. The importance of hydration and the properties of water, but there is also the air, the consumption we make of it, how it affects both the lack and the excess and how to know to manage that consumption today is the great forgotten in sports. We could divide the base of the apnea into two parts, first the physical part: it is fundamental to know how our body works, what we consume and how to manage it, what are the reactions to the lack of oxygen and how to act. Second the psychological factor: how to manage these stress situations and act accordingly, we all know the importance of sports psychologists in professional sports. 107

We all know basically how our respiratory system works: our lungs contract and dilate by inhaling or exhaling air. It’s functioning also affects other parts such as the diaphragm, thoracic cavity, sternum, musculature and a very important part is the hypothalamus, responsible for alerting the brain when CO2 levels rise to inappropriate levels. Within the physical part we will give some information about consumption and how to manage it, fundamental for our activity.

The pulmonary consumption and ventilation increase 20 times from the resting state to the maximum intensity in sports. It´s clear: when there are more activity, more consumption, more pulsations more consumption...and if we were able to lower those pulsations and consume less? It’s possible. The most common and easiest way, the tool used by these guys when they go to train: to exhale twice as long as you inhale air. With this we oxygenate our lungs better, the pulsations go down and thus our consumption 108

Continuing with consumption, it is obvious that the fewer muscles we use, less consumption. If we are under a wave we already know that it is the first thing we have to do: try to relax as much as possible and not use muscles unnecessarily. It will not do us any good to fight with the force of a wave, we should try to get out when we are able to move, not in full current.

In apnea, talking about the psychological factor it´s everything, knowing how your body works, it´s consumption or reactions they are a tool to make psychological work much easier. The goal is for your mind to control your body even in the most extreme conditions and do not have panic, fear is free. What we will try is to rationalize everything that is happening inside and outside your body, trying to evade your mind in certain moments of stress to make them so less hard. 109

Within the world of waves, there are two critical moments, the wipeout and the wave series that will come later. The wipeout is the biggest immersion that we are going to suffer, we usually come from a big effort to paddle the wave when we catch it and we fall down we have a high air consumption and generally, we do not have time to inspire well. At that moment, what we have to do is try to relax all the muscles of the body by mentally reviewing each one of them, in order to keep our mind occupied and suffer less in that apnea. When we see that the strength of the wave decreases, it will be time to surface. After that critical moment of the wipeout, we will surface and the waves will continue to arrive, there we will have to pace our breaths with the arrival of the next wave so that when we arrive we always have the maximum amount of air inside.

It is essential to know where and in what orientation we are, our board will serve as a reference, your address will always be the beach. If before entering the water we have checked the escape points in case there is an accident (it´s essential how to try to distinguish the currents that exist), we will know which direction to take, always knowing that each wave that arrives will have less force than the previous one and that it is a useless expense to fight against them.

In short, data to be taken into account in our SUP sessions: analysis of what is happening at all times and act accordingly, having foreseen any risk situation to know how to act, always be accompanied. If we have big waves, carry the necessary security elements and never enter the water because your surfer friends does it. If you do not see yourself in conditions, nothing happens because you do not enter in the whater. Nobody is more or less than anyone else because you do not enter the water. 111

DO I DO WHAT I WANT OR THEY OBLIGATE ME? Majo Pellicer

Up Suping

How many times have we stopped to think about whether I do what I want or they force me...rarely, right? We are in a society where a child has to do what the father likes, or simply because of the stereotypes that life and past generations have given us: If she is a girl that she plays with dolls, kitchens, etc...if he is a boy, he plays with cars, builds things, etc...Why do not we stop and think he would like to do? Step by step, we realize that the times change, and that is the fun of progressing, changing the wrong to move forward. Many times parents, uncles, relatives, do not realize what the child wants, or needs. For that reason we have to observe rather than listen, and that if a girl likes to play football or wants to be a boxer, we have to let her be free. And the same with boys, if he wants to be a dancer, go ahead and do what he wants. Since finally, it´s her life and “not yours”, so you must give freedom and do what they “want”.

114

Another important concept is “happiness”, that word we usually say. But if you stop to think, you realize that most times people do not understand its meaning. Therefore, they do not understand if that “happiness” is what parents want to achieve by having their children do what they want, or if the child’s happiness really is that they do what they really want. For me, sincerely, the most important happiness that exists is for each person to do what they want and fight for it because then that will multiply by two. At that moment that child and father can understand true happiness. From what I have learned in these years, it is important that in the world of competition or in any sport that a person starts, always have someone with whom to share their goals and illusion... Those people are the parents, those who understand you just by looking at you.

That role is key for an athlete but there are two major differences between one and the other. The role of the son towards the father is that the son makes him understand that it is his life and not that of his father and that if he makes a mistake, nothing happens. It is a person and not a machine. And the role of the father to the son will be the support towards him: the affection, in the good and bad moments, the understanding. Those two big differences, make that together is the ideal magic for a rider. To conclude, to say that this is my opinion because of the experience I have lived through these years and with the intention of helping the small sportsmen that start in the Stand Up Paddle: that they do it because they want and that they “enjoy” it. I only raise one last thing: Do you prefer to see your son enjoy or see him sad? Support it or force it?

Injuries in older ¨SUPers¨ Pablo Codesido

Up Suping

Sometimes when I write and has the privilege of being able to do so in the section of a magazine of such diffusion in the world of SUP, certain licenses are allowed. You will understand me right away since the one who signs is sometimes absolutely identified with the content of this article. In some of the previous editions, we analyzed the type of injuries of this sport and we pointed out that in some study of already certain validity, it was affirmed that the injuries in the SUP are more frequent in people of different age...concretely above 40 years. Beware of misunderstood claims. It is evident that the tissues of the elderly do not have the same capacity for adaptation, recovery and repair as a young person, and that they probably succumb before to acute injuries such as that produced by the impact of a big wave, or to overloads due to cycles of repetitive paddling. As evident, as it is more likely that the same training conditions, a young person between 15 and 35 years develop better competitive skills than someone over forty. Biology, anatomy and physiology give no respite to age, do not forgive, and although we have seen some other reference that dismantles this idea...there are few who have fallen into a pot of magic potion. 116

But today I have to dismantle the negative connotation that has the phrase “injuries are more frequent in people of more age. The scientific evidence of what has been said does not mean in any case that SUP is a negative sport for the elderly people. It’s the opposite. Starting from the premise that we perform a moderate SUP with controlled aerobic paddling or wave sessions with safety. Of the first advantages that the SUP reports to us, it is first of all that it is a sport in general with low joint impact and that therefore it favours the muscular toning and not the wear of cartilage, which can avoid many problems in old age immediate. And it does, in addition, in practically all of the muscle groups, ie upper and lower trunk, and joints such as the hip and knee are greatly benefited. More than one case with a joint injury of these joints has found a space of incredible fun and health in the SUP, disappearing even the pain that manifested itself with other activities. The control of weight, metabolic, blood pressure, glucose levels...are also fulfilled thanks to the aerobic activity that it produces and how worrying it can become after a certain age where certain health outbreaks begin that make us go to the doctor.

117

Personally, as you know, I’m still a defender of the SUP competition, and I’m glad that many events include motivation spaces and podiums for “veterans”. Competition can be a personal incentive to maintaining a certain discipline when performing routine exercise, but obviously, it is not an obligation.

Finally, there is the mental section. Recently, in a small forum of illustrious SUP riders of this country, someone questioned the mental health of the most veteran in this sport, seeing the heroic feats of this group of old people (monstrous waves, inhuman marathons, youth elite races...) Let me share this little joke with all of you referring to that group of good friends...of a certain age, a comment from which we all get a huge laugh, clear proof that SUP is something fabulous for our mental state and release of stress...even me.

THE LAND OF THE THOUSAND RIVERS

RIVER SUP IN CHILE Antonio Zapa

Adele Priestley . Translation: Carolina Sheth-Smith

After my last expedition in the peaceful waters of the River Nile, I felt the need of a new destination which would satisfy my white water necessity. As a veteran kayaker, I have enjoyed the descent of white water rivers in the five continents but there was one emblematic destination which I had yet to visit: Chile.

In 2008 I began to change the way I descend white water rivers from sitting in a kayak to descending standing upright on a Stand Up Paddle Board. River SUP has provided all those emotions and feelings which I had practically forgotten. My career during these years led me inexorably to a country considered the Mecca of whitewater. Chile, with its more than 8.000 km, an impressive geography trapped between the Andean mountain range and the Pacific Ocean, where infinity of rivers flow with a marked unevenness. 124

In Santiago, Tonet Viota, a stand up paddler and specialist in rafting, was waiting for me. Two years agohe had already shared with me an expedition for 9 days in the first descent of the Gambia River in Africa. We hired a car, loaded our inflatable boards and headed south, looking for the most popular rivers in Chile.

The first one we visited was the Cajón del Maipo, but its waters at this time of year were the colour of chocolate, which did not incite us to navigate it. We decided to continue downwards to the proper region of rivers. The Bio-Bio was the first river where our whitewater descent began in Chile. After the construction of electricity dams the river lost part of its route, although still retaining spectacular stretches. For two days we descended its abundant waters. The first day the river presented grade 2 rapids with a few of grade 3, to finish in the city of Santa Barbara. The second day, the river passed between two dams, traditionally a stretch popular with rafters. This stretch maintained grade 3 steep rapids and good waves, separated by calm backwaters, where we could recover. The Bío-bío is the forgotten river, not very frequented nowadays but of enormous beauty. In the descent we were accompanied by Simon, a kayaker who shared his knowledge of the river, and Martín, who gave us the logistical support, both working to relaunch the area.

From there we went to the city of Pucón, a tourist spot at the foot of Villarrica volcano. This city is the capital of adventure tourism in Chile. Sebastian Ovando, a Chilean river paddler, was waiting for us. Together we descended the river Trancura, another well-known river. This river has longer rapids with few pauses, cataloged of grade 3. One of the rapids, named “Pescador”, made us swallow a little water, we insisted several times but it won all the battles.

In the beautiful city of Puerto Varas, in the region of the lakes, dominated by a lake and the Osorno volcano, the Petrohue River awaited us. This river, considered grade 3, descending with fury and good flow, hardly gave us any rest, good trains of waves and some other amazing slipstreams, and pushed us to the limit of river sup to date. Here, we were given protection and safety by a kayak company called Kokayak.

In Chile you can find rivers of all levels of difficulties and sections suitable for the levels of each paddler. Its particular orography makes it a paradise for the practice of river SUP. The above mentioned rivers, with their gigantic waves, are for experienced paddlers. Their innumerable holes provide spectacular falls in their purely white waters and the force of the current makes absolutely mandatory the use of the leash, with the device for quick release, on the lifejacket. Recovery of the board as quickly as possible is essential to avoid hitting rocks and situations of anguish.

Whitewater SUP river requires constant concentration, not only when you are in the middle of the destabilizing rapid. Your sight should also evaluate and interpret the rest of the rapid and the line to follow at all times. Paddling only on one side makes you having to constantly correct the drift, whilst balancing legs and maintaining the point of gravity. In these rapids of maximum difficulty, the energy you require is brutal. Dosifying your strength in fundamental. The physical and psychic strength required to face a fall in an unpredictable and turbulent environment needs a thorough respiratory and mental control.

Knowing how to read the river is basic, cutting the diagonal wave, attacking the wave trains, avoiding holes, dodging stones, searching for depth, knowing how to fall and swimming with a paddle in your hand until you can climb on to the board, are indispensable requirements in this extreme sport. Our intention was to also descend the Futaleufu River, but the access road suffered a landslide and made it impossible to reach this beautiful and famous river. Mother Nature reminded us that in Chile it is she who governs with her telluric forces and not man. It is always good to have a reason to return, now we have the perfect excuse. Back in Spain I continue to collect experiences and rivers, which are going to be part of a book yet to be published, that brings together all the techniques of river SUP in the living waters. Chile has given me the last of many sensations so far and its rivers reinforced my passion for stand up paddling in white waters. 127
