REASONS FOR STUDYING AT DANUBE UNIVERSITY KREMS

YOU WILL NOT FIND A MORE EXPERIENCED SPECIALIST FOR LIFELONG LEARNING.

UNIV.-PROF. DR. STEFAN NEHRER – DEAN OF THE FACULTY OF HEALTH AND MEDICINE

Holistic continuing education for working professionals Danube University Krems was founded in 1994 as an institution that was unique in all of Europe, a state-run institution focusing exclusively on continuing education. Thanks to this specialization, it continues to hold a singular position on the European education scene. Experts for lifelong learning create innovative continuing education formats for professionals and executives, taking into account current economic, societal and technological trends.

Instead of one-sided short-term training programs, we emphasize holistic education: to continue one's education at Danube University Krems means expanding both one's professional and personal competencies, to explore interdisciplinary connections and to develop new perspectives for one's own professional environment.

“In times of rapid technological development and transformation in our society, a basic education completed at the beginning of one's professional career simply is not enough. Professionals and executives need to update and upgrade their competencies throughout different stages of their lives in order to remain competitive. At Danube University Krems, lifelong learning is not just a slogan – we are living this philosophy.“ Pioneering concept Its success has proved Danube University Krems right: today, it serves over 7,000 students and boasts approximately 15,000 graduates. The importance of lifelong learning is universally acknowledged these days. Thanks to its innovative orientation and modern management, our University is, and continues to be, a model for many educational institutions. Its model based on many years of experience can not be simply copied.

At Danube University Krems, continuing education is not just a field of training amongst many others but rather a core competence. This makes all the difference, for the entire University is geared towards the particular standards of middle-aged professionals and executives looking for true lifelong learning specialists to guide them on their way to their next career step or to support them in their professional re-orientation.

The main emphasis of our teaching, however, is on the practical relevance and currentness of the imparted contents, another trait raising us above competitors in the university arena.

“Being a physician today requires more than medical competency. Physicians also need to be managers attuned to the needs of their patients as well as team leaders while cooperating constructively with different professional groups. That is why I chose to study health care management at Danube University Krems – here I can learn everything I need to meet the requirements of such a holistic understanding of my profession.“

Innovative, market-oriented offers Course directors at the University for Continuing Education are well familiar with the everyday professional practice and experiences of their students and know which competencies are in demand and which changes are currently characterizing various professional fields. Wherever promising new fields of work are opening up, our experts are without peer when it comes to quickly and flexibly responding to them by developing innovative offers you will not find at any other university. In the world of today, interdisciplinary cross-connections are highly relevant for professional practice and consequently highly in demand. To name just a few examples, we combine medicine with management, music with law or pedagogy with new media, thus providing our students with exactly the qualifications demanded by the labor market.

International top faculty Apart from its own professors and employees, approximately 1,000 well-know scientists and practitioners from all over the world teach at Danube University Krems. We recruit the brightest minds for all areas of expertise. The performance of our lecturers is constantly evaluated by our students to ensure high levels of faculty quality – a system that has proved successful: our first-class lecturers are the main reason for our students to recommend Danube University Krems to others (see 2012 Graduate Survey).

The best lecturers – the best students Not only our lecturers but also our students are the best, which is why you can learn much from your fellow students, too. An application process ensures that only suitable interested persons will be accepted. Additionally, course directors appreciate diversity in their groups, since different approaches and problem solving efforts by different professional or age groups will expand the students' horizon and help them break open any rigid acquired mindsets and perspectives.

“Lecturers and professors include both high-profile university professors and successful managers. Not only do they bring excellent theoretical knowledge and didactical skills to the table, they also know how things are done in real life. That is what makes their input especially valuable.“ DI HEIDI ZEHETNER, MBA – MARKETING DIRECTOR, MARS AUSTRIA, GRADUATE, DANUBE EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM

“Students at Danube University Krems demand high standards from their lecturers. I think it's an exciting challenge as well as a permanent obligation to become more professional myself. I, too, profit very much from discussions in class.“ PROF. DR. DR. WILFRIED VON EIFF – PROFESSOR FOR HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT AT MÜNSTER UNIVERSITY LECTURER, HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Innovative and efficient teaching methods At the Faculty of Education, Arts and Architecture, educational researchers explore pioneering teaching methods and the application of new teaching technologies. Their knowledge becomes integrated into our didactical concepts, allowing us to impart technical knowledge to participants efficiently and to optimally promote their leadership skills as well as their ability to reflect and innovate. Instruction takes place in small groups using state-of-the-art e-learning methods, with a special emphasis on action-focused and practice-oriented types of teaching.

012 013

Danube University Krems sets high-quality teaching standards and uses an integrative quality management approach following the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. Its strategic goal is to foster a sustainable orientation of the study programs on offer to promote lifelong learning at university level.

014 015

“The quality of the study programs offered by Danube University Krems is ensured by an integrated quality management system. Each curriculum is reviewed by a panel and the performance of our lecturers is evaluated; the results are then integrated into the constant optimization process of our study programs. Because everybody who invests time and money in intensive continuing education apart from leading a professional and a family life deserves only the best quality.“

All strategies, objectives and their implementation are controlled and coordinated by a special executive department for quality management and teaching development. The ‘Studies and Teaching' quality handbook prepared by Danube University Krems sets out the overall quality strategy and standards and defines processes and their owners. These stakeholders then integrate new relevant knowledge from their work environment and initiate accompanying quality assurance measures.

Continued systematic development is ensured by integrating relevant knowledge (e.g. from the European education scene), by scientific advisors, experienced lecturers and through student feedback. Each university course is incorporated in the quality management system of Danube University Krems.

“When I began my studies I already had this wish for change in me. The idea of starting my own business, however, only came to me while I was in the continuing education process. One of the decisive factors was the student community: thanks to discussions with my fellow students, I was able to muster enough courage to take this step – and my idea worked out.

Due to today's multi-faceted life careers, lifelong learning has become critical. There is no single one solution for a given professional career but always several perspectives. For me, continuing education means expanding my range of options and gaining more freedom. This is why Danube University Krems has become my academic home.“
