This year marks our 25 year Anniversary and we could not have done it without your loyalty and support!
Founded in 2000 by Dr. Donald and Mary Richey, Rejuvené strived to provide state-of-the-art treatments and the finest products to create beautiful healthy skin for life. When I was handed the baton 10 years ago, I knew that I had something special. Like the driver of a premier, world class sports car, I knew that my biggest challenge was to resist the temptation to “oversteer.”
My goal was first to acknowledge the incredible business, and the employees and community which has contributed to its successs. I felt that any changes made should be purposeful and in line with my mission to inspire, empower, and create “wow moments” for our patients. That philosophy, of doubling down on what’s working and being fully accountable for what could be better, has allowed us to survive many challenges and ultimately thrive in this community.
I am grateful to all of our patients; for all of the feedback, the compliments and the criticisms; to all of our employees, past and present; and to this wonderful community. Cheers to another 25 years!
Dr. Kafele T. Hodari
SCAN HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR STORY
The start of the New Year is a time for rediscovery, renovation, and rebirth. We could elect to chase any of these on any other day of the year, but the start of a new year provides a universal impetus to take action and make those dreams of positive change a reality.
Our glow-up issue seeks to embolden those ideations each year, providing advice from experts in home, health, style, and business to pursue those goals more effectively. It also spotlights those who have not only taken the dive into making those changes but also maintained their drive, eventually manifesting whatever change they sought to attain. We're happy to say this issue is full of both.
One of those stories, and certainly one of the most poignant to the theme of this issue, landed on our cover this month. Marc and Shuree Wesley have been featured in the magazine numerous times over the years, and through those features, we've had the opportunity to get to know them well. As a couple, they built their first business, M&S Wesley Tree Service, together and used it to better our community in several ways. They and their family survived the Camp Fire but lost everything. They rebuilt their homes, their businesses, and pulled each other out of crippling devastation. Rather than throw in the towel, they decided to become the healthiest versions of themselves they could be. When they achieved their glow-up, they set out to help others do the same, and in the process, they provided a second chance at life for several individuals and businesses alike in town. Cryo Skin and Body, their current project, is one of those. Through their efforts, the community has become a better place to live, and we appreciate all they continue to do for it.
Though I aim to end these notes in an uplifting way, our community experienced back-to-back tragedies in December, and I'd like to use the space to ask for your help. Though the loss of the Bidwell Mansion shocked and saddened us all, it unfortunately overshadowed the shooting of two children at Feather River Adventist School, 6-year-old Roman Mendez and 5-year-old Elias Wolford. Their families are struggling to cope with their sons' injuries caused by this senseless violence while also attempting to cover the costs of their recovery. I know I'm not alone when I say I cannot imagine what they are going through right now, but I do know we can help them through it. Below, you'll find two QR codes linking you to each boy's fundraiser. Please consider donating to them. Though their funding goals are set, it'll take far more to make these boys whole again, and as a community, we can help make that possible. Your help is sincerely appreciated.

On Downtown Chico’s Main Street, just across from The Upper Crust and Bookstore, is the newly founded Second Cousin Gallery. As I peek in through the window of the old Mr. Kopy Building, I see exhibited: strange bright furniture, glass blown into unfamiliar—yet organic—forms, and a multicolored array of miniature ceramic obelisks, among other things.
This downtown block, specifically, is sentimental to me. During the endless days of youth, in the sun or the rain, I often found myself at the intersection of Second and Main Streets. Four dollars or so purchased an interesting title off the shelf at the Bookstore, and a few more bought coffee to sip as I sat flipping pages at the nearby café, Naked Lounge. I’ve fondly kept this tradition into adulthood, and I can’t overstate my excitement to add a peek into the nearby art house to my ritual.
To learn more about the gallery, I contacted Mattie Hinkley, Second Cousin’s curator and director, and asked, “What is the history of Second Cousin?” Hinkley responded, “It started as an idea in grad school. I was part of a low-residency program, so while doing my research and coursework, I lived in Chico. I thought about art constantly and wished there were more contemporary art spaces in town. If you daydream about something enough, eventually, you can’t help but want to actualize it.”
Regarding the location of the space, Hinkley states, “I’m super excited about activating the corner of Main and 1st Streets; it’s a perfect location near CSU Chico—where I work as an art professor—and downtown. I hope that Second Cousin can become a space that draws people to downtown.” They also express that Second Cousin could become a type of “third space” where “It’s
not home, it’s not work, but somewhere people can look, listen, sit, talk, think and feel.” To improve functionality and better suit the gallery’s needs, it will be undergoing construction in 2025. “We’ll have a large exhibition space, a lounge area, workshop and classroom space, and one resident artist studio.” Hinkley explains, “I want the space to be highly accessible and adaptable to handle all the exciting stuff we have planned.” Acknowledging construction schedules can be unpredictable; they ask Chicoans to follow their journey @secondcousingallery on Instagram.
Second Cousin pledges to highlight emerging artists and showcase engaging contemporary art. Hinkley states, “I’m interested in artists experimenting with material and color and incorporating a strong awareness of craft and design. I’m especially interested in work from voices historically marginalized in the Western art world.” With a commitment to education, they acknowledge that a gallery can be more than just its space; it can be the gathering place of local culture. Conceptually and functionally, the design of Second Cousin is intended to cultivate a sense of welcome and inclusivity for all. The gallery’s overarching purpose seems to foster a relationship between art, craft, and design while rejecting hierarchy and embracing interconnection. Second Cousin also acknowledges it stands on the unceded lands of the Mechoopda Maidu people and pledges to support indigenous-led solutions.
The art space hosted its inaugural exhibition, Teaser Trailer, in October—a group exhibition operating as a preview to the future of Second Cousin. It was open to the public throughout the month and featured artists familiar with the local scene, including Wyatt Hersey, Tamara Murphy, and Jacob Troester. Following the gallery’s desire to dissolve traditional boundaries between art, craft, and design, the work’s mediums were varied, including “painting, ceramic, glass, metal, fibers, and rubber.” Many pieces showcased in Teaser Trailer are available for sale on Secondcousin.org, along with Second Cousin t-shirts, stickers, and postcards. With this initial exhibit setting an example, Second Cousin promises to continue introducing new ideas and playfully challenging preconceptions.
On January 24th, 2025, Second Cousin will
host the Chico Zine Fair. Free to attend and open to the public, the event will “celebrate the spirit of DIY publishing” and bring together our growing community to celebrate independent artists and writers. A zine, shorthand for magazine, is typically a hand-made limited edition publication. The Zine Fair boasts their topics will range from “art, poetry, and comics” to “politics, personal stories, and weirdo niche interests.” The event picks up the torch and pays respectful homage to “Zine Fest,” hosted at Blackbird Cafe in 2019, continuing the spirit of Chico’s cultural movements and proving Second Cousin intends to use its space for the benefit of our community.
Hinkley says they have “endless dreams” for the gallery but are focused on “four major things: curating group exhibitions, offering financially accessible small works, developing a calendar of workshops and classes focused on craft and design skills, and instituting an artist-in-residence program.” As a nonprofit, Second Cousin relies on public generosity. With an option to donate on their website, secondcousin.org, support from the public will help them continue sparking “dialogue about contemporary art, craft, and design.”
Looking ahead into Second Cousin’s future, Hinkley states the big challenge “will be building a consistent audience and encouraging people to step outside their routines.” Citing the Coronavirus lockdown era’s “culture of isolation,” they want “to be a space that helps people rediscover the joy of gathering and experiencing something new.”
In a final summary, I believe Hinkley says it better than I ever could: “Chico has an incredible arts scene, rooted in DIY culture and traditional crafts, especially clay, glass, and printmaking. Spaces like 1078 Gallery, MONCA, Janet Turner Print Museum, and the Chico Art Center are evidence of that. But it can always benefit from more spaces dedicated to art and dialogue. You can never have too many art spaces, coffee shops, bookstores, or public parks. These are vital institutions that shape a town’s culture. I want Second Cousin to exist within this framework but offer a different perspective. We are a space dedicated to contemporary art, craft, and design work from all over. One of our sayings is, ‘Reject hierarchy, embrace interconnection.’ I want Second Cousin to help foster connections between people, ideas, and cultures while contributing to Chico’s identity as a thriving artist community.”
Inspiration can spring from anything that brings joy. A favorite vacation spot might conjure visions of tranquil blues or vibrant oranges. A treasured keepsake could be the centerpiece from which a color scheme or theme grows. Focus your energy on one room or area to start, as this will help you complete each project and keep you from becoming overwhelmed. Review what you already own to begin the process of deciding where change is needed—what to hold onto and what to let go of.
Purge what does not suit you any longer.
Donate or discard, pass it on, but absolutely get it gone! Organizational storage systems tame disarray and control clutter. Look for underutilized spaces beneath furniture and in neglected corners to incorporate additional storage options.
Finding what works for you will transform your space into a functional oasis of calm from which to envision further transformations.
Color is one of the most defining elements of design. It can scream, “Look at me!”
It can also whisper, “You don’t see me.” Choosing colors for your environment is a very personal decision. You can search current color trends online or in magazines for ideas, but trust your feelings and go with what calls to you!
Painting a wall or an entire room will certainly refresh any space. Peel and stick sample sheets, available at your local paint store, are a great way to live with a new color throughout the changing light of day to night before committing to any new shade.
In addition to paint, color can be introduced through fabric elements such as throw pillows, window coverings, and rugs. These soft furnishings provide textural interest and can unify a room when they share a common hue. Start with one of these items and coordinate those that follow to complement each other. Choose one bold print to grab your attention and be the focal point. Vary the scale of the prints or patterns from large/bold to small/simple to harmonize these elements into a coherent look.
Selecting art in any form will bring personality into every space it inhabits. Paintings, sculptural objects, and framed photography/prints that resonate with you will enliven and invite conversation and contemplation. Surrounding yourself with what you find beautiful and interesting will nurture your creative spirit.
Elevate your lighting options to make the most of your chosen design elements. Adequate lighting is crucial to the function and enjoyment of any room. Adding layers of illumination by combining overhead, task, and mood lighting will define and refine your space. Choose a color temperature range and be consistent in all your fixtures. Mixing soft white (2,700–3,000 Kelvin) and cool white (4,000 Kelvin) creates unnecessary disharmony. LED technology offers various colors, from cool daylight to warm white across the rainbow spectrum.
A consciously designed space provides an engaging environment to rest, learn, entertain, and grow. This does not require an expansive budget or significant investment in time, only a desire to create a space as unique as yourself.
The start of a new year is often seen as a symbolic opportunity for fresh beginnings. It is a time to reflect on the past year, assess accomplishments and challenges, and chart a path forward. Setting goals and resolutions provides an excellent way to approach this process, offering both clarity and motivation. However, organizing these aspirations into actionable plans requires that you really want it, are ready to make changes, and most importantly stop procrastinating.
Before setting goals, it is essential to reflect on the past year. What worked well? What areas need improvement? Be honest with yourself. Reflection provides valuable insight into patterns, habits, and choices, serving as a foundation for growth. However, the key is to prioritize and stick with it. While creating an extensive list of resolutions can be tempting, focusing on a few meaningful goals ensures better follow-through. Consider what truly matters—improving health, advancing in a career, strengthening relationships, or pursuing personal passions.
Once goals are established, the next step is to develop a plan. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, if the goal is to save a certain amount, create a monthly savings plan, track expenses, and identify areas to cut costs. Use planners, calendars, or goal-tracking apps to stay organized. Revisiting the plan ensures accountability and helps adjust for hiccups that may happen.
While structure is critical, flexibility is equally important. Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may shift, requiring you to pivot. View setbacks not as failures but as opportunities to recalibrate. Maintaining a growth mindset fosters resiliency, ensuring progress continues even when the path deviates from the original plan.
The success of resolutions often hinges on creating sustainable habits and being ready. Goals provide direction, but habits form the foundation for long-term success. Start small to build momentum. For example, if the goal is to eliminate things, commit to just 10 minutes of decluttering daily. Over
time, these small actions compound, leading to visual success. You start seeing your environment change, and it's addicting.
Accountability and support can make a significant difference in achieving goals. Find a friend in a similar position or talk to your family about what they want to see differently. Share resolutions with your village, or join groups with similar aspirations. Celebrating milestones along the way is equally important. Recognizing progress reinforces motivation and provides a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small the achievement. Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back when you achieve something—you deserve it!
The new year offers a powerful reminder of the value of self-improvement and growth. Individuals can transform resolutions into lasting change by reflecting on the past, setting goals, creating actionable plans, and embracing flexibility. With intentional effort, the start of the year becomes not just a time of hope but a launchpad for getting your spaces in order. You would be surprised how far ahead you can get when truly ready.
Why do we often drift away from the things we love to do? Is it because of time passing, other commitments, or maybe it’s become more challenging to enjoy those things?
Heather Stone understands how difficult it is to stop doing the activities you love and how life-affirming it can be to start again. After years of falling away from the outdoors due to weight gain and work stresses, she is back to whitewater rafting, playing softball, and hiking in her spare time.
Heather is a physician assistant working with Dr. David Alonso at Magnolia Health and Wellness. She focuses on obesity medicine and the practice's all-encompassing weight loss program.
Heather joined the clinic a year ago after embarking on her own weight loss journey. Her high-stress job in emergency medicine and other similar specialties resulted in high cortisol levels, so when she tried to lose weight solely through diet and exercise, those elevated levels made it nearly impossible. She shares, “It’s pretty common to see life get ahead of you when you work a very fast-paced, stressful job.” She lost over one hundred pounds through nutritional counseling, weight regulation medications, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The weight loss program at Magnolia Health and Wellness is comprehensive in design. It includes a complimentary initial consultation, followed by weekly or monthly visits, which consist of nutritional
advice, exercise recommendations, and treatment with a GLP medication. They are one of the few programs that work with compounding pharmacies and insurance companies to cover the cost of these branded medications to make them more affordable. Heather explains, “Obesity is now considered a disease. You could have a perfect diet and exercise program, but if you suffer from metabolic syndrome, it’s almost impossible to lose weight even if you do everything right. The GLP medications allow us to help patients diet for a long period of time for a slow and healthy weight loss experience.” Membership in the program ranges from several months to years, depending on the patient’s individual goals. Once those goals are reached, their GLP medications will be tapered off and monitored. Typically, those patients who don’t have a lot of weight to lose will taper off, stop the medication, and keep the weight off. However, some individuals who may have comorbidities, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes, will remain on a tapered dose for extended periods and sometimes indefinitely.
Before joining Magnolia Health and Wellness, Heather spent years working in urgent care, emergency medicine, and primary care. Following her weight loss journey and the resulting freedom from blood pressure and cholesterol medications, Heather was eager to join Dr. Alonso’s practice and share her successes with others. She says that practicing in the weight loss program is the first time she feels like she is actually making a difference. “Now I’m finding I can help people and see life-changing results. That’s the most satisfying thing you could ever experience as a healthcare practitioner.” Heather’s newfound satisfaction with her career and health has enabled her to re-embrace her active outdoor lifestyle of trail building in Yosemite and white water rafting.

Roller coasters, motorcycles, and skydiving are a few of the adventures that Kimberley Cardenas has been able to experience in her new life. But running her first marathon through the streets of Los Angeles was the most meaningful.
Kimberley, originally from Southern California, had been significantly overweight since childhood. Stresses at home led her to use food as a crutch, and that pattern continued into adulthood. She explains how she tried every diet out there, and she’d lose some weight but always gained it back. Her obesity eventually led to diabetes and high blood pressure. Lifelong dreams had been set aside, and her health was suffering. She said, “I realized through counseling that I needed to make life changes, and it wasn’t just about weight loss.”
Kimberley had known about Enloe Health Bariatric & Metabolic Services as an employee of the health system but always told herself, “No, it’s not for me. I can do it on my own.” Eventually, she realized she
couldn’t. Seven years ago, she reached out, attended the introductory seminars, and decided that bariatric surgery was right for her. She speaks of her post-surgical nurse, Susan, who had undergone the procedure a year before. The mentorship program and online resources are all pivotal points in her success. Surgical candidates attend six months of nutritional education before and after surgery, and patients are regularly seen to monitor their nutritional progress. Kimberley took the program very seriously, did everything by the book, and kept most of the weight off by focusing on a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Erik Simchuk, Medical Director of Bariatrics at Enloe Health, explains that the 18-year-old program has been regarded as a Center of Excellence in bariatric surgery since 2007. Visiting surgeons often ask how Enloe can get such positive results. Dr. Simchuk shares, “I think our relationship with patients is better than you will find in most programs nationwide. We as surgeons establish a very close relationship with our patients and care deeply about what we do, about their outcomes, and their wellbeing.” He emphasizes that their whole
team is integral in each patient’s journey. They have two nurse practitioners, Anna Coates and Shauna Price, who he says, “are extremely well-trained and caring. They’re bariatricians—those who take care of weight loss surgery patients.” The program has two registered dieticians with over 15 years of experience in bariatric weight loss nutrition. Anne Montoya, RN, is the bariatric services coordinator and runs classes covering preoperative and postoperative pathways. In addition to the health-focused staff, the office personnel work to ensure the entire program runs smoothly.
Kimberley shares that her weight loss journey came full circle as she returned to the city she had grown up in as an overweight child. She ran her first marathon on those streets and conquered them as a self-assured, healthy, and strong woman. “I let my weight stop me from doing many things, thinking I wasn’t worth it. As I’ve come through that, I realize that I am worth it. It completely changed my life.”

Originally from the Central Valley, Sarah Trent worked in various industries before landing in Sonoma County. While working for Cline Cellars, she was tasked with leading sustainability initiatives across all facets of the business, including vineyard, cellar, bottling, and tasting room operations. Newly christened, The Ancestry Inn and Suites is conveniently located, accessible from Highway 32 and near several food and shopping venues. The hotel is located on a short cul-de-sac where the Cleveland Family basically owned every dwelling. Tiffany Cleveland, owner of The Ancestry Inn with husband Jim, says the location, with its low traffic ratio, is perfect for the 6,000-square-foot business. It includes the Clevelands' home and the eclectic six-unit hotel, where you will find the usual amenities, such as a refrigerator, microwave, bathroom, and private entrance. What you won’t find are televisions. Tiffany says, “The lack of TVs adds to the retreat-like atmosphere we try to provide for our guests.”
One absolute difference with their rooms is the decor, which includes antique furniture, hand-finished wall moldings, and some beautiful wall enhancements. The rooms are different from your average hotel layout, too. A covered veranda encircles the buildings, and a forested creek runs behind the business, where the Cleveland sons, Jackson and Sterling, like to play. You can also find outdoor seating and a garden out front. The entire complex is painted a light green shade, which embraces the foliage surrounding it.
In a business of this size, you will rack up utility bills. The average monthly PG&E bill was thousands of dollars, though it varied significantly from month to month. “You could never count on the bill being a set amount,” said Tiffany. “The bills varied wildly depending on our guest bookings and how much energy the guests used.” Just the laundry’s energy bill added hundreds of dollars. That all changed when the Clevelands decided to go solar. After entertaining bids from different companies, they chose to engage the services of Urban Design.
Tiffany’s degree in economics and her past experience dealing with sales representatives prepared her for the negotiations. What she discovered was that Urban Design stood out in terms of transparency and fairness. “The owner, Sean McCreary, came out right away and inspected our setup,” said Tiffany. “They didn’t try to upsell us or make offers for things we didn’t need. “Sean came out and told us we needed 72 panels to fit our needs. Urban Design was transparent with their bid and turned out to be extremely efficient with putting the panels in.”
Tiffany’s accolades go on and on. Urban Design worked around the rainy weather they experienced at the time. The crew
members were nice and polite and even became concerned about the family dog running around out back. They had a positive attitude with each other, as well. One person whom Tiffany specifically appreciated was Natalie, the solutions person at Urban Design. “Natalie helped us in so many ways,” said Tiffany. “She helped us navigate through the entire process, from the applications to the lag time between utility bills. She ensured we made the filing deadline, which was a huge relief.”
Another huge relief is the money The Ancestry Inn is saving on its utility bills. “We are saving thousands of dollars a year, and Urban Design has also been available for other needs such as electrical and plumbing.”
When Tiffany was a young girl, she dreamed of becoming an innkeeper. These dreams have been fulfilled with the creation of The Ancestry Inn. If you need a single-person room or a family suite that sleeps six, be sure to contact them on Instagram @ancestryinn or email ancestryinn@gmail.com. If you want to save money on your energy bill, look no further than Urban Design. Visit them online at www.UrbanDesignSolar.com for more information.

To power myself up to write about selfempowerment, to better oneself, or to “glow up,” as the saying goes (a saying I had never heard until Aveed, our fearless publisher, told me was the subject of this issue), I only need to evoke the powerful memory of my wily old real estate mentor, Ken DuVall, otherwise known as KDV.
KDV was a powerhouse of declarations about self-improvement and personal transformation. He described himself as someone on a life-long quest to rise above a bad beginning and become a better person, and he was determined to inspire the rest of us along the way. I doubt if KDV ever heard the phrase “glow up,” either. A KDV phrase in that vein was more likely, “Let’s get your mojo working, babe.”
KDV sent me a memoir he had just written in 2006. He was 74 years old at the time. He gave me explicit instructions to keep it private. “No one else will ever see it until I’m taking the long dirt nap, as they say in showbiz!” he wrote in an accompanying letter. KDV was a stuntman in Hollywood in the 1950s, and he knew showbiz.
“It’s primarily a catharsis/tell-all kinda treatment. You can see it’s a motivational pitch like I’ve done all my life as a sales manager.”
I have honored KDV’s instructions, even after he began that “long dirt nap” in 2012.
Now, however, I will quote some excerpts from the memoir.
“In the early days, I was tempted to blow my brains out on more than one occasion,” he writes. “It was really grim. I’m going to lay the story on you of how I pulled myself up from the pits to a miraculous recovery…”
KDV lays out his childhood of oppression under an abusive mother. The first chapter of his memoir is titled “Born At An Early Age—Then Things Got Progressively Worse!” He refers to his mother’s “fabulous backhand,” which she would routinely administer to his face and head, knocking him flat.
KDV tended toward delinquency but worked his way up. “The wise guy finally wised up,” he writes.
Throughout his memoir are phrases that KDV attributes to his road to the glow:
“Attitude is everything…” “Don’t be hostile…” “A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone…”
Finally: “Omnia Vincit Amor, or Love Conquers All!”

While winter may evoke lovely feelings of joy and wonder, it can also induce a host of not-so-pleasant skin conditions. To quote the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones, “Winter is Coming.” We should all prepare!
“Well, why winter?” you may ask. The lower temperatures and drier weather can cause or worsen such skin conditions as atopic dermatitis (aka eczema), perleche (aka severely chapped lips), and seborrheic dermatitis (aka dandruff). While these conditions have some differences, they share the common symptomology of dryness, flakiness, and itching. The additional combination of shorter, darker days and—often— more stress during this time of year can further contribute to these and other skin conditions.
So, what can we do to alleviate or prevent these various maladies? First, moisturizing is key! Moisturizers, which generally come in the form of ointments (thick and greasy), creams (thick but not greasy), and lotions (more watery), should be applied daily. They’re best used immediately after a bath or shower to slightly damp skin. I recommend ointments or creams instead of lotions, especially in the wintertime. Lotions may feel good initially, but they are generally less effective than thicker moisturizer formulations.
Second, moisturizing is just as important as avoiding overwashing. Overwashing includes not just washing too frequently but also using products that are too abrasive or harsh. Many cleansers for the face or body employ fragrances, beads, or scrubs that can be too drying, especially in the winter. Cleansers that we may tolerate in the warmer and more humid summer months may be less tolerable in the winter and can contribute to dry and itchy skin during the winter months. This applies to the skin of the face, body, scalp, and hair.
Seborrheic dermatitis, which presents as dry, flaky, irritated, or itchy skin of the scalp and face, can be especially prominent in the winter. It is thought to
be triggered by changes in the weather and our body’s adjustment (over or under correction) to the climate. It is also believed to be triggered by stress, which tends to increase during finals week or when we anticipate some of the demands of the holiday season. In addition to stress management, using an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo or even seeing your dermatologist for a prescription-strength shampoo can be especially helpful for treating seborrhea.
Perleche is another condition that is quite common in the winter due to the drier conditions. In addition to the seasonal contributions, this condition can be triggered by insufficient intake of fluids or water, which is common in the winter when many of us are less active. Decreased fluid intake can make our saliva more concentrated, which can be irritating or even caustic to our lips or the surrounding skin near the corners of our mouths. Hydrating correctly with 3-4 liters of water daily and using a moisturizing and hydrating lip balm can be especially helpful for treating this condition.
For more information, please visit your local board-certified dermatologist's clinic. Some of my favorite winter products are the Triple Lipid Restore moisturizer from SkinCeuticals, the Youthful Lip Replenisher from Revision Skincare, the No-Show Mineral Sunscreen from ColorScience, and the Gentle Antioxidant Soothing Cleanser from Rejuvené.

For the past 17 years, Marc and Shuree Wesley have made it their mission to enhance health and wellness in Butte County. In 2008, they launched M&S Wesley Tree Service, intent on safeguarding our area's trees and the supply of fresh air they provided. Rather than simply remove sick trees, they launched initiatives to treat them, keeping them healthy and ensuring their continued service of cleaning the air we breathe.
In 2019, the couple began a new health journey, determined to find the best version of themselves through fitness and nutrition. In 2021, they purchased Nutrishop Chico to assist others in achieving the same positive life changes they had through better nutrition and supplements. In 2023, they furthered that commitment by purchasing NSFit gym in Chico, rebranding and renovating it into Lions Den, an affordable gym experience for those dedicated to seeing results. Not only did they achieve their own personal glow-ups during this time, but they also made them possible for
countless others in Butte County. To top it off, they saved two struggling businesses affected by the pandemic and gave them glow-ups of their own.
This October, they saved another struggling business—Cryo Skin and Body in Chico.
“We heard the owner of Cryo Skin was planning to close the business, and as users of cryotherapy ourselves, we thought it would be a great complement to the rest of our health and wellness offerings.” Shuree said, “Our membership at Lions Den has grown exponentially over the past year, and though we have several ways for members to recover from workouts at the gym, we didn’t have anything quite like this.”
Marc and Shuree purchased the dying business and again set out to give it a glowup of its own, adding products and services to provide residents with a full-featured destination for total recovery and relaxation. It reopened its doors last month, offering just that.
“We’ve made some sweeping changes to Cryo Skin.” Marc said, “It’s now a true recovery spa and the only one of its type in Butte County.”
At the heart of Cryo Skin and Body is the cryo chamber, a specialized device designed for whole-body cryotherapy. It involves briefly exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures, typically ranging from -145°F to -175°F, for therapeutic and recovery purposes. It can also burn up to 800 calories in just one session. This is significantly more effective than a cold plunge, where you’ll experience temperatures between 50-60°F and lose up to 90 calories in 10 minutes. Sessions in the cryo chamber usually last two to four minutes, and participants wear minimal protective clothing, such as gloves, socks, and headgear.
Cryotherapy chambers operate by filling the enclosed space with cold, dry air or nitrogen vapor. This extreme cold triggers a physiological response where blood vessels
constrict, directing blood flow away from the extremities and toward vital organs. As the body warms up after the session, blood vessels dilate, improving circulation and promoting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues. Over the following 24 hours, you’ll notice a flood of endorphins and dopamine in your system.
The potential benefits of cryo chambers have garnered attention from athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and those seeking alternative therapies for health and wellness. They help reduce inflammation, alleviate muscle soreness, accelerate recovery after intense exercise, and enhance overall athletic performance. Some users also report improvements in mood, sleep quality, and skin health due to the release of endorphins and increased collagen production.
“Using cryotherapy and the cryo chamber were game changers for us during our health and fitness journey.” Marc said, “It allowed us to recover from our workouts quickly and return to the gym at full capacity the following day. As a result, we could see results faster, and those changes fueled us to keep going.”
Not only does Cryo Skin offer the cryo chamber for full-body recovery, but they also offer CryoSkin 3.0 as well—a localized, area-specific cryotherapy service that induces apoptosis to slim and tone individual body parts by permanently destroying fat cells and cellulite while tightening the skin by boosting deep layers of collagen. This 30-minute painless treatment has no downtime and is an excellent way to see physical changes quickly.
“Making lasting changes to your body takes time and commitment.” Shuree said, “Marc and I learned that early on in our health and fitness journey, but kickstarting that journey with some visible physical changes is a nice way to reward yourself for taking the first step. It can also help accelerate your goals while working out and get you to a place of physical maintenance faster.”
As any athlete will tell you, recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and proper recovery is usually multi-factorial. To ensure that Cryo Skin and Body lives up to its “recovery spa” designation, Marc and Shuree have invested in additional offerings, including HaloRed saunas, additional Normatec boots, and a new HOCATT machine. There’s more on the way, too.
“Our Halo Saunas are spacious infrared saunas designed to promote total-body relaxation and detoxification.” Shuree said, “It combines infrared heat with salt therapy, making it perfect for deep muscle recovery, improved respiratory health, and stress relief. The sauna is big enough for four people and offers guided meditation and yoga sessions. It’s truly the best way to unwind and recharge.”
“Normatec boots are a popular recovery tool used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts to enhance recovery,
reduce muscle soreness, and improve circulation.” Marc said, “If you’ve ever been to a physical therapist for a leg injury, you’ve likely seen these in use. The boots utilize dynamic air compression technology to deliver a massage-like experience by inflating and deflating chambers in a specific sequence. This process mimics the body’s natural muscle pump mechanism, which helps flush out metabolic waste, reduce inflammation, and increase oxygen-rich blood flow to the muscles. It allows users to adjust pressure levels and target specific zones, catering to individual recovery needs. Sessions typically range from 20 to 60 minutes and can be used pre- or post-workout. Athletes in sports like running, cycling, and CrossFit frequently use these boots to accelerate recovery times and optimize performance.”
“The HOCATT is our crown jewel.” Shuree finished, “It is a state-of-the-art wellness device that supports holistic health, detoxification, and cellular rejuvenation by biohacking your body. At its core, the HOCATT integrates ozone therapy, introducing medical-grade ozone into the body through the skin to promote oxygenation, boost immune function, and combat pathogens. It also features carbonic acid therapy, which dilates blood vessels and improves circulation. Hyperthermia, or controlled heat therapy, enhances the body’s natural detoxification processes by inducing sweating to eliminate toxins. It is widely used in wellness centers for those with chronic health conditions, fatigue, or those looking to maintain optimal vitality.”
To round out their offerings, Marc and Shuree also employ two estheticians at Cryo Skin and Body to provide signature services, including Hydrafacials, The Perfect Derma Peel, Cryo Facelift facials, and spray tanning.
Though there’s no shortage of spas in town, the two have created one with a unique mission that is also affordable. Cryo chamber visits cost just $40 each. A membership providing unlimited daily visits to the cryo chamber and sauna costs just $199 per month, and gym members at Lions Den receive 50% off their membership at Cryo Skin and Body. Five cryo-slimming sessions are currently available for $1,250, a far cry from most fatfreezing services out there, and five Hydrafacials will run you $795 through the end of January.
“We want to make health and wellness affordable for everyone.” Marc said, “Between Lions Den, Nutrishop, and Cryo Skin we have everything we need to promote health, nutrition, wellness, and recovery in Butte County.”
Get rid of inflammation, commit to a better you, and do a reset for the New Year. Visit Cryo Skin and Body at 1366 Longfellow Avenue in Chico or online at www.CryoSkinAndBodyChico.com for more information. They can also be reached by phone at (530) 354-2382
Dermal fillers have become a cornerstone of aesthetic medicine, offering a versatile solution to restore volume, reduce wrinkles, and enhance natural features. If you’ve ever wondered about fillers—what they are, why people get them, and when the right time to consider them might be— this guide is for you.
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected into the skin to address various cosmetic goals. The most common type is hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the body that helps keep skin hydrated and plump. Other fillers may contain ingredients such as calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-Llactic acid. Fillers vary in thickness, elasticity, and longevity depending on the formulation. Softer, more flexible products are ideal for areas like the lips, delivering a soft, hydrated look, while thicker, more structured fillers enhance areas like the cheeks or jawline with stability and precise contouring. This versatility allows for highly customizable results.
There’s no universal “perfect” age for fillers- it’s about individual needs and goals, which vary depending on lifestyle, genetic, and personal factors. Many people begin noticing signs of aging in
their late 20s to early 30s when their skin loses collagen and elasticity. At this stage, fine lines and subtle volume loss may appear, especially around the eyes, mouth, and cheeks. Dermal fillers can address these early changes by restoring volume, adding subtle lift, and smoothing wrinkles.
Others may seek filler options later in life when the effects of aging become more pronounced. As facial features lose volume with age, fillers can be a great solution to restore a youthful, balanced appearance.
Dermal fillers aren't just for reversing the signs of aging. Many people choose this minimally invasive treatment to enhance facial features or add volume to specific areas, creating a more defined and sculpted look that refreshes, enhances, and restores natural beauty.

Choosing an outfit can be tricky! Layering different pieces can add interest and functionality when getting dressed in the morning. Whether it’s cold or warm outside, one's style should always incorporate layering to show off an expression of themselves.
Mixing different clothing styles & textures can create various outfit options for changing seasons. To start any look, begin with something light on the bottom; this is your base layer. It could be anything from a tank top or t-shirt to a lightweight blouse. You always want an easy throw-on base to your outfit that will match almost anything in your wardrobe. Having some basics you love in your closet for everyday wear is always a great idea.
From there, you could style another tee or even a collared shirt; the options are endless. For extra flair, make sure your base layer peeks out for the put-together but still laid-back look you’re likely looking for.
Next comes a thicker piece of clothing, such as a flannel button-up top or sweater. This adds depth and some extra warmth to an outfit. This thicker layer will likely be your outer layer in most outfits. You could add a coat or jacket if you plan to be out and about for the day.
A good rule of thumb is to choose an exciting texture for your outfit, such as a chunky knit sweater or a denim or leather jacket. The first two thinner layers prevent the outfit from looking bulky and should always be breathable and functional.
Outfits should be three to four layers at most, or it could become too heavy and weigh you down.
Lastly, remember to add some fun accessories to complete your look. Don’t be afraid of color and prints, either. Any accessory will transform a simple outfit into a stylish look! When accessorizing, there are plenty of options. You could try a scarf around the neck, a hat, gloves, or even stacking your favorite jewelry pieces.
Using these simple tricks for styling an outfit, you can be sure to find the perfect effortless and fashionable look. In all seasons of life, when you look good, you feel good! Layering your favorite clothing items will always be in style.

It’s a little bit difficult to be the one in the family who loves winter while everyone thrives in the summertime. Every year, when the clock turns back, I get happier, while the family (and social media) seems to take a collective groan of despair.
Don’t get me wrong; I adore spring and summer's chaos. It’s nothing but complete and innocent joy with the sounds of kids’ laughter as they run through sprinklers, and the smell of fresh, juicy peaches fills the air. It’s the definition of delight.
But the peace and joy I feel as the days get slower, shorter, and sweeter is unparalleled. Voices get quieter. Walks get slower. Food gets warmer. It’s a mother’s dream for me, but being happy in the dark months can be slightly discouraging. Luckily, we can use what we have readily available to bring that happiness back around.
Using some of my favorite biohacks, we are holding onto a lot of happiness this winter, and maybe I’ll turn my family back into loving this season as much as I do.
Happy biohacks you need to consider this winter:
Go outside
So much subconscious marketing this time of year says we should all stay inside. How often have you heard, “stay cozy and warm inside” or “no need to weather the outdoors”? While this might seem innocent enough, it’s taking away from your happiness just a little. Making it a priority to spend some time outside, even just for a few minutes every day, will boost your happy hormones and make you smile.
Start a new hobby or learn a new skill
There’s nothing quite like beginning something new, especially when it’s just for fun. Challenging your mind and body is always a good idea, and winter is a great time to do it. By its nature, everything moves a little slower, giving you all the grace and room to learn and grow. Maybe it’s time to start those puzzles in the closet, use the sketchpad you bought, or pick up the guitar from your grandfather.
Eat seasonally
While a peach pie does sound lovely, our bodies instinctively know that this is the season to eat warm, nutrient-dense, and seasonal food to nourish our body, mind,
and soul deeply. Let your body naturally gravitate towards root vegetables and soups, hot fresh apple cider, and rich meats in the slow cooker. Your body won’t get this kind of nutrient dump in the summer, as it will start craving bright red tomatoes and apricots picked from the neighbor’s tree. Enjoy what the season has to offer.
Let the outside in
On those rainy and dreary days, it can be challenging to spend time outside, but bringing the outside in can be as easy as opening those shutters, pulling back the curtains, and brightening your home with some natural light. If it isn’t storming and you can safely open your windows without letting water in, do so! Fresh air from outside the home has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive function by increasing oxygen levels in your brain. It has also been shown to increase serotonin levels—your brain’s happy hormone!
These are just a few of the many ways to brighten up the darker months. Try some of the above for yourself and see how much of a change they can make!
Eyewear has evolved incredibly over the centuries. From its humble beginnings, when functionality was the sole focus, to its current status as a major fashion statement, glasses have come a long way. By the 1950s, art and fashion began influencing eyewear, and the industry never looked back. Today, glasses seamlessly blend practicality with style, offering something for everyone. Whether you're looking to refresh your look or completely reinvent yourself, the right pair of frames can give you a glow-up like no other.
The options in 2025 are endless. Eyewear has absorbed style elements from every decade, creating a vibrant mix of vintage charm and modern innovation. From timeless cat-eye designs to sleek aviators, today’s glasses take the best of past trends and build on them. Bold, thick frames are a standout choice if you're ready to make a statement. They demand attention and can turn a simple outfit into a chic, fashion-forward ensemble.
If subtlety is more your speed, metal frames are an excellent choice. Lightweight and stylish, they have an almost jewelry-like elegance that enhances your look without overpowering it. However, there's one trend to leave in the past: small lenses. The era of tiny frames has faded, making way for medium and large designs that flatter most face shapes
and offer a modern aesthetic. Switching to larger frames could be the glow-up you didn’t know you needed!
Trying on glasses can be a fun experience, so step out of your comfort zone! You might be surprised by what suits you and what catches your eye. Bath bombs have become a staple of self-care routines, transforming ordinary baths into spa-like experiences. These fizzy, fragrant delights are not only fun to use but also relatively simple to make at home. By customizing ingredients, colors, and scents, you can create bath bombs tailored to your preferences or as thoughtful gifts for others.
For those new to the craze, bath bombs are compact, effervescent spheres or shapes made from a blend of dry and wet ingredients. When dropped into water, they dissolve and fizz, releasing oils, fragrances, and skin-soothing components into your bath. Common ingredients include baking soda, citric acid, and various additives like essential oils, colorants, and botanicals. The fizzing reaction occurs when
- 1 cup baking soda
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ½ cup Epsom salt
- 3 tablespoons carrier oil
(e.g., coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil)
- 1 teaspoon water
- 15-20 drops of essential oil
(e.g., lavender, peppermint, or citrus)
- Optional: Food coloring or mica powder
- Optional: Dried flowers or glitter
- Silicone or plastic bath bomb molds
Instructions
1. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and Epsom salt. Use a whisk to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
2. Prepare the Wet Ingredients
In a separate small bowl, mix your carrier oil, water, and essential oils. If you’re using food coloring, add it to this mixture. Stir well.
3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, a little at a time. Mix continuously to prevent the citric acid from reacting prematurely. The mixture should have a consistency similar to damp sand and hold its shape when squeezed.
baking soda and citric acid combine with water, creating carbon dioxide bubbles.
Bath bombs offer a wealth of benefits. They often include essential oils, like lavender or eucalyptus, that promote relaxation and stress relief. Ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, or almond oil can be added to moisturize and soften the skin. Personalizing scents allows for aromatherapy benefits, whether you need energy or calmness. The colors, sparkles, or dried flowers make the bath visually inviting, and making bath bombs at home is a cost-effective way to enjoy a luxury product.
Making bath bombs at home is a fun and creative process. Follow this easy recipe to craft your own.
- Mixing bowls
- Whisk or spoon
- Spray bottle
- Gloves (for handling colored mixtures)
4. Adjust Moisture
If the mixture is too dry and crumbly, lightly spritz it with water using a spray bottle. Be cautious, as too much water can trigger fizzing.
5. Add Decorations
Sprinkle dried flowers or glitter into your molds for added flair.
6. Fill the Molds
Pack the mixture firmly into each half of your mold. Overfill slightly, then press the halves together tightly. Remove excess mixture around the edges.
7. Set and Dry
Let the bath bombs sit in their molds for about 24 hours to harden. Once dry, gently remove them from the molds.
Work Quickly
The citric acid can react with ambient moisture, so avoid delays.
Storage
Store finished bath bombs in an airtight container to keep them fresh and dry.
Experiment
Try different essential oil combinations or add natural colorants like spirulina or beet powder for unique creations.
Creating bath bombs at home is a delightful way to indulge in self-care while exploring your creativity. With just a few ingredients and some patience, you can produce customized, luxurious bath bombs that elevate your bathing experience. Whether for personal use or as a handmade gift, bath bombs are a treat that anyone can enjoy. So grab your ingredients and start crafting your own fizzy masterpiece today!
One point lead vocalist Joanie Christensen made about her band Sweet Revenge is that they “are so diverse, people will be shocked.” A big reason for their diversity is the members' varied backgrounds when it comes to music. For example, Christensen sang vocals with a Sacramento-based hip-hop/funk group, and drummer Art Underwood played in a punk band but started playing music at Whitworth College in Spokane, a Christian university. One thing the instrumentalists do have in common is a history of
working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Redding, along with many years playing in bands.
Ralph Magnusson, their guitar player, is a physical therapist at the hospital and teaches physical therapy at Shasta College. Jerry Barker, their bass player, is retired, and has always focused on country music. “Jerry really loves the band and everyone in it,” said Joanie. “He sees it as a special project.” Barker, Magnusson, and Underwood have played
in many Redding-area bands—Barker in the very popular Hill Street, Magnussen in PopRocs, and Underwood in Public Enema. Christensen feels blessed to be among such talented musicians.
“Compared to them, I’m a relative newcomer,” she said. However, Joanie is a third-generation musician. She follows her grandfather—a talented mandolin player, her mom—a country singer who won the “Country Showdown” in Humboldt County many times, and her father—a guitarist who taught her her first chords. “When I was four years old, I got out my mom’s recording equipment and set up a ‘studio’ in the living room. My audience was my stuffed animals," said Joanie. She attended Christian schools growing up and sang Christian music. She was allowed to listen to country and Christian music through high school, but 90s pop wasn't permitted.
“I was always a singer and performer.” She said, “I enjoy putting on a real performance on stage.” And she does. She believes you have to put your heart, soul, and mind into the performance when on stage. She has been around many bands but warns against it taking over your entire life. “I’ve raised three kids, two of which are now at an age where they can come into a venue and see me perform,” she said. “Music helps make life better and bearable during hard times. Focusing on music helps me get back on my feet.”
In the “real world,” Joanie is employed in senior care but finds time to work at Exodus Farms outside Redding. There, she works as a horse wrangler for kids who have suffered emotional abuse or trauma. Many of the children are in foster care, and the experience of riding and connecting with horses has a profoundly positive effect on them. “It's a rewarding and positive time for me and the kids.”
Sweet Revenge has played in many Redding venues and hopes to expand to Chico at The Tackle Box. You can see them at the Three Shastas Bar and Grill, where they perform the music of Waylon, the Judds, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, and many more. Check them out on Facebook and Instagram

As the new year approaches, many of us start thinking about resolutions. Instead, why not embrace the idea of a “Word of the Year”? Inspired by Jon Gordon's One Word That Will Change Your Life, this method involves choosing a single word to focus your energy on growth and transformation without the pressure of perfection.
For years, my friends and I have embraced this practice together. I write my word with a whiteboard marker on my mirror, where it reminds me of what I want to embody. I allow it to marinate in my thoughts and influence my actions. Starting each day with that focus brings clarity and a sense of purpose.
A Word of the Year simplifies your intentions, focusing them into a single, empowering idea. Words like growth, peace, or fearlessness can inspire daily action. Unlike resolutions, which often feel daunting, a single word allows for flexibility while maintaining focus. It keeps you grounded and reminds you of what truly matters. By hosting a vision board party, you make the process fun and social and create an uplifting environment to set intentions with positivity and accountability.
Gather friends who want to start the year with intention and creativity. Keep the group small for meaningful conversations, or host a larger gathering with crafting stations. My friends and I like to sip tea from beautiful cups and snack on charcuterie or a potluck of comforting, easy-to-eat dishes.
2. Gather Materials
Create a cozy crafting space with magazines, scissors, glue, poster boards, markers, stickers, and washi tape. Include printed quotes or images for extra inspiration. Set the mood with ambient music or videos—my favorite is on YouTube. Search “Frame TV”. I love the winter cabin with a fireplace, soft jazz, and crackling logs. It transports us to a safe, cozy space perfect for creativity.
3. Kick Off with Reflection
Ask everyone to consider the past year: What went well? What do they want more of? Brainstorm your one word. Sharing past words can be enlightening. In 2020, my word was hygge, the Danish term for life’s simple pleasures, which felt especially meaningful during COVID-19. Another year, I chose sobremesa, the art of lingering in conversation after meals, and it became a year of deepening relationships. This year, my word was minimalist. I learned that less is truly more, finding peace and calm through decluttering.
4. Create Vision Boards
Once everyone has their word, it’s time to create! Fill boards with images and words that align with their word—whether related to self-care, travel, career, finances, or relationships. Vision boards are personal, but working alongside friends can inspire and motivate while fostering accountability.
5. Share and Celebrate
Invite guests to share their word and vision board if they’re comfortable. This step builds connection and sets a supportive tone for the year ahead.
Choosing a Word of the Year and visualizing it through a vision board brings clarity and inspiration without the pressure of rigid resolutions. Hang your board where you’ll see it often—I keep mine in my closet. Research suggests that regularly reflecting on your goals increases the likelihood of achieving them. So, gather your friends, grab your supplies, and envision a brighter future—one word and one vision at a time!
While there were no drunken fights around the holiday table over the pronunciation of this venerable nut, it has been a minor controversy for a few hundred years here in the United States. Assuredly, the correct pronunciation will be revealed in this article, and many of you are not going to like it. First, my old soccer buddy Greg Spears from Metairie, Louisiana, claims the nut is pronounced puh-KAHN. Then, you will find residents of Louisiana who insist the word is pronounced PEE-can. It seems that the division of thought is related to the number of voters of each party in the last few presidential elections, sort of a fifty-fifty draw.
Surprisingly, the choice is NOT a regional thing. According to the National Pecan Shellers Association, 70% of the people in the Northeastern United States say PEEcan, as do 45% of Southerners. Unless, of course, you’re from North Carolina, where they insist on puh-CAN. Around Chico, you can find people who pronounce the
word each way. Who is correct? No one. In terms of American colloquialism, say it the way you want to. Just because I say puh-KAHN, you won’t find me arguing like I do over coo-pon and que-pon (It is always coo-pon. It’s of French origin. Look it up.)
And speaking of origins, let’s take a gander at the word origin of the pecan nut. According to the Ojibwe Native Americans, their pronunciation goes back to Buh-gahn. They spell it with a B. Therefore, the best match for the indigenous pronunciation would be puhKAHN. So, there you have it—the most accurate pronunciation would be puhKAHN. But it doesn’t matter. PEE-can is an American twist, and we like making things our own!
As for pecans and what you can do with them, the nut is highly versatile and very healthy. The tree is from the hickory family and is native to the Southern United States and Northern Mexico.
Pecans have been successfully grown in other areas of the U.S., and they’ve even been grown locally right here in Butte County. The first thing you will notice about a pecan tree is its height. They are BIG trees. On average, they can grow 66 to 131 feet tall, and their trunks can be over six feet in diameter. The biggest surprise is that the pecan is not a nut but technically a drupe, a fruit with a single stone or pit surrounded by a husk. There are words like exocarp and endocarp in the definition and information on the taxonomy. But who cares? What matters is how good they taste.
They have a rich, buttery flavor and are chock full of vitamins and minerals. You can eat them raw, but roasted and salted is another favorite. And who can forget their use in praline candies, pecan pie (YUM!), and butter pecan cookies? No matter how you pronounce pecan or how you like to eat them, have some soon and often. The real question is, are you a PEEcan or a PEE-can’t?
We can already hear the grumbling: "This is a glow-up issue, and you have the audacity to make the recipe a sweet treat?" Life can't be about absolutes, and we believe a small reward to close each week is the perfect way to keep the momentum going towards achieving those glow-up goals. When it comes to finding the perfect decadent snack to reward yourself, few pack the punch of a pecan praline. Sweet, crunchy, and nutty, they manage to check all the boxes. Best of all, they're super easy to make and keep for a long period of time. After a recent trip to New Orleans, we haven't been able to get them off our minds, and something tells us you won't be able to either.
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup white sugar
- ⅓ cup water
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 cups chopped pecans
1. Prepare two baking sheets by buttering them generously.
2. Heat a sauce pan to medium heat and combine white sugar, brown sugar, butter, and water.
3. Once combined, bring the saucepan to a rapid boil and stir in pecans.
4. Cook and continue to stir until large bubbles form on the surface of the mixture, the pecans begin to look sugary and the mixture just begins to color.
5. Remove from heat and drop spoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets. Let cool completely. You can also refrigerate to accelerate the cooling process.
A reader might assume I am a regular out-and-about diner, considering my time spent writing about restaurants. In reality, my home typically has enough leftovers to satisfy me throughout the week. I had not previously visited the Slyderz food truck, which I’d always heard great things about. As such, I cannot compare their previous iteration and their current brick-and-mortar restaurant at 995 Nord Avenue. After dining there, I’m completely fine with that.
Upon entering the dining room, the roadhouse interior of polished lumber, sleek black walls, and aluminum accents felt warm and sophisticated. High-rise two-tops, four-top tables, and four-seat booths evenly filled the space. A blend of soft lighting from overhead fixtures and a 90-degree panorama of tinted large windows contrasted the bright visuals of the large TVs in each corner of the room. A very cheerful Casey greeted us, and we explored the menu.
To continue the history of breaking tradition during this month of resolutions, I opted for their Grilled Cheese Brisket Sandwich, and upon noticing a clear calendar for the rest of the day, I excitedly chose the onion rings as my side.
Objective met. Not to be outdone, the mysterious man behind the camera in most of these photos went with The Dixie Chick, featuring their pickled in-house sweet jalapeños with a side of garlic sidewinder fries.
Once our meals arrived, I became fixated on the color of the Texas toast. This is no fool’s gold; their soft, crumbly bread is grill-kissed to perfection. You’ll find tender pulled brisket between these slices of heaven, a blend of provolone and white American cheeses, soft diced yellow onion, and red and orange bell pepper. The result is not the ooey, gooey mess I had imagined, but rather a well-disguised temptation-laden flavor extravaganza. To top it off, the onion rings were flaky and beautifully battered, and for that moment, I wanted for nothing.
As for the title and arriving without a 16-point turn, when you find yourself coming down West Sacramento and approaching the light at Nord Avenue, go straight into the shopping center. You may be tempted as you pass the other eateries, as plenty dot that stretch of the seemingly endless parking lot, but whatever you do, don’t turn at the light.
Ask any of Abel Sarnoski’s friends or teachers, and they’ll tell you the same thing: Abel is a genuinely nice person. You won’t find Abel badmouthing people, pouting or throwing a fit, causing problems in class, or otherwise being negative. Abel views life with a positive outlook and envisions a good future.
“Sometimes I’m surprised when people tell me I’m nice, but that’s just how I choose to be,” said the seventeen-yearold senior. A former math teacher related how Abel came up and apologized for the class’s bad behavior one day. “It was awesome,” he said. “Abel’s such a great kid.”
Along with being nice, Abel is also an excellent student. “I’ve gotten straight A’s since eighth grade. I got a C in middle school, and I was determined to never get a low grade again.” You could hear the quiet conviction in his voice and see the set look on his face.
“I plan on attending Butte College because why not take advantage of two years of free education,” Abel said. His passion is the love of the arts, especially digital art. While he can create realistic artwork in many genres, he enjoys the cartoonist world the most. He plans on becoming a storyboard artist for animation in the fantasy or action/comedy area.
Recently, Abel helped paint a massive mural in the bowling alley in Orland. It was an art class group project. He also has an entry of an octopus in the Orland High 2025 calendar and has built up quite a portfolio of artistic works.
Besides being artistic, Abel enjoys working with their horses at the ranch and caring for the six dogs. Tabatha and Nathan, Abel’s parents, encourage him to go on to college, and his sister, Keira, supports him 100%. Abel loves working with animals. “Animals have unconditional love. They don’t judge you like people can.”
This was not always the case with Abel’s life when he was younger. “I called myself a tomboy,” he said. “I loved being out with the other kids, playing sports, and having fun. I wanted to find out who I was and why I felt different,” he said.
In middle school, Abel’s feelings about self-identity became stronger and stronger. One night, he had a dream that his real name was Abel. When he woke up in the morning, it all became clear to him. “I suddenly realized I was in the wrong body. I was a boy in a girl’s body, so I changed my name.”
Abel said no one influenced his decision. No one “groomed” him. He went with his inner feelings. “At that age, I didn’t even know what LGBTQ meant,” he said. “I definitely did want to find out who I was. I knew there was something deeper involved. At the end of the day, I wanted to be comfortable with myself.”
Another belief Abel has is that young kids need to grow older before they make any permanent decision about who they are. “No one should have surgery until they’re over 18 and can make a more informed choice.”
And at the end of the day, Abel Sarnoski is just another teen navigating the ups and downs of being a teenager. But he knows who he is now and looks forward to tomorrow.
Butte County has an inordinately high number of animals in need of adoption due to a number of factors including wildfires, floods, and irresponsible breeding. Please consider adoption as an option for increasing the love in your own household. These soon-to-be pets can be adopted by calling the Chico Animal Shelter at (530) 894-5630.
