BOOK REVIEW - CATCHING FIRE by Suzanne Collins Scholastic Press; Reprint edition (June 4, 2013) Jessica Kates In honor of the new movie release of Catching Fire, I started reading The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. After devouring the first book in a matter of two days, I knew that I was on the bandwagon and there was no getting off. Catch ing Fire is a compelling continuation of The H u n g e r Ga mes t r i logy. T h i s b ook p i c ks u p r i g h t where the first book left off. After winning the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta live their lives as any other victors of the games. What they don’t know is that their victory will spark an uprising of rebellion against the capital th roughout the 12 districts and the odds will not be in their favor. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. By the last chapter you will have gone th rough a whole range of emotions. This book will leave you wanting more and luckily there’s still another book that awaits you. Like Effie Trinket says, “May the odds be ever in your favor.”

Losing Sleep Over Losing Sleep? Dr.Razavi Has Solutions
A
nyone losing sleep over loss of sleep is not worrying without reason. Sleep deprivation can lead to a host of medical problems from irritability, memory loss, impaired metabolism, a weakened cardiovascular system and, in the worst case scenarios, early death.
Dr. Mehrdad Razavi, a board certified neurologist and sleep specialist, has dedicated the last 10 years of his professional life to finding solutions to problems associated with sleep disorders. He is the Medical Director of Sleep Diagnostics in Chico, Paradise and Yuba City. He is also partnered with Dr. Richard Knudsen a Board Certified Pediatric Sleep Specialist from Paradise. For the longest time, Chico had only sleep apnea testing facilities (IDTF), but not a Comprehensive Sleep Center, where the focus is not just on testing, but rather on treatment and longitudinal care of these patients. For the first time, we offer such a center. Dr. Razavi’s sleep centers offer not only testing and diagnosis, but also treatment and longitudinal care. “For the first time in Chico area, we offer a Comprehensive Sleep Center,” he says, “treating sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmares, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome, as well as pediatric sleep care to help children get off sleeping pills.” Dr. Razavi’s is never happier than when treatment results in getting patients off medications. “Many patients can get off sleeping pills and other drugs they’ve taken for decades,” he says. “Once a month or so, I hit a homerun and get a patient off all their medications. I’m very stubborn. I don’t want to give up until I find the right solution for each patient’s problem.” “Most sleep disorders are either misdiagnosed or not detected,” Razavi says. “Many patients are just not aware of what is troubling them. The way they are feeling seems normal to them after awhile. Though our bodies relax when we sleep, our brains remain active, processing the data we gathered through the day, organizing it, analyzing it, and storing it. Lack of sleep disrupts this process, so once a sleep disorder is corrected, patients have enhanced mood, better memory, and are generally more pleasant to be around.” Dr. Razavi is about to launch an Insomnia Clinic, which includes a series of four one-hour treatments for insomnia. “We’ve done these sessions before at our facility in Redding,” he says, “but that service hasn’t been available before in Chico.” “When we get a referral,” the doctor says, “we do all the legwork on the insurance, minimizing the work for the patient, the referring physician, and their office staff. When I began my practice, I worried about how to charge people who had little money. I decided we’d charge Medicare rates, which are the least costly. That, we hope, will put people at ease about getting the help they need.” Dr. Razavi’s Comprehensive Sleep Centers have also been chosen for an upcoming research study into issues related to snoring. For the first time, we will bring clinical sleep research trials to Chico. Visit your local Sleep Diagnostics and start the year refreshed. Mushroom Adventures Living in an area surrounded by orchards and farmland, we love to learn about the local farms and farmers around us. It’s always interesting to learn about where your food comes from and we are lucky to live in an area so rich with resources for growing food. This month we are excited to look into the world of a man who is making it possible to bring the farming inside and grow your own food at home.

Find Donald at one of the four Farmers Markets every week. Chico: Saturday, Auburn: Saturday, and two markets in San Francisco on Sunday.
Visit their website: mushroomadventures.com
to see the farm and mushroom kits for sale.
I will apologize ahead of time for any bad puns but getting the opportunity to do an article on mushrooms really brings out the “fungi” (or gal) in me. See, it’s happening already. Donald Simoni, began his mushroom adventure in 1996 growing out of a basement garage in San Francisco. As a young boy of 7 years old Don was in a 5 & 10 Cent store with his father. He saw pictures of vegetables on the little packets of seeds for sale. “I asked my father what are those packets? He said they were seeds to grow the type of vegetable pictured on the front. I purchased and planted the seeds and then soon after, a plant grew! I thought, my God this is magic. When I place a seed in the ground and water it, lo and behold: food. Who would have thought it was possible. That was my first experience as a farmer. I was hooked from then on.” Around this time one winter quite a few years back, Don had some time off and decided to
try and grow mushrooms for fun. He joined a local mushroom club and one of the club members taught him some of the techniques for growing. He soon found out he would need more than $400 for a new pressure cooker to continue growing, so Don made a few mushroom kits to sell at the local mushroom fair to make some money. His kits sold incredibly well, and he quickly made the money for his cooker! So began the story of Mushroom Adventures. Each of Don’s kits contain everything you need for multiple crops for 6 to 12 weeks. You plant the seeds and “shroom” you will have all the mushrooms you could possibly want! There are a variety of types to grow ranging from Portobello, to Oyster, to Dense Whites. Customers absolutely love these kits and describe them as being incredible easy to set up and maintain. Most never want a store bought mushroom again! There is something about watching your own food grow, and we all know eating it fresh is always far more enjoyable. Now after moving the product portion of their operation to a farm in Marysville, there’s “mushroom” to expand and grow. Large factory style mushroom farms can grow enough mushrooms to wholesale, but the problem with large farms is that they have little control of their product after it is sold. Many times major stores refuse to remove older product from the shelf until it is sold or rotten. Customers unknowingly often get very old mushrooms, Donald says. He recommends storing

HOME SWEET HOME
Whether you were born and raised in our area, found yourself in Chico for college, or followed a loved one here, it doesn’t take long to realize there is just something about this place. It always draws back those who have left, and holds on to those who have discovered the friendly small-town, big tree way of life. Traffic-stopping pink winter sunsets and slow-paced creek swimming summers are just part of the local charm, and all of us who stick around know we are choosing that warm, comfortable, simple feeling of home over a big city lifestyle.
When Ric Powers, designer at New Again Kitchen & Bath moved here from southern California in 2010, he didn’t know what to expect. He didn’t know he would be quickly accepted and embraced by a community who supports its local businesses, likes to get to know people on a personal level, and holds in high regard art, design and craftsmanship. When you get to know Ric and the rest of the folks at New Again Kitchen & Bath, it is easy to see why they have so quickly been adopted into the fabric of our community. In a valley full of people who love feeling at home, Ric and his team are here to help bring a special element of individualized design into your home to make it that more specifically tuned in to your comforts and needs. Although they mean business when they get to work on demo and re-construction, always finishing their jobs incredibly quick so you can enjoy your new living space without the inconveniently lengthy in-between period, they won’t rush you into a decision or roll their eyes at your vision of a dream kitchen. They are friendly, fun to talk to, interested in your vision, and committed to bringing their customers’ dream spaces to life. We have had a great time following their path of beautification through homes in the area, and are impressed by their dedication to always making improvements, both in the homes they work on and in their own craft and service as a business. With the new year, New Again Kitchen & Bath is getting back to basics-- but don’t worry, they’re not leaving the sparkling granite and seamless construction behind! As they continue to bring design, function and new life into their customers’ homes, they are making an extra effort to genuinely accommodate and appreciate each person they work with and for. They want to get to know their clients not just as customers, but as people who share a common sentiment: a love for the comfort of home.

New Year, New You
This year’s New Year, New You makeover winners were fun, compassionate, strong, inspiring people who we were honored to get to know. With the help of StyleMindChic’s Heather Lindstrom and local salons, spas and boutiques, we loved being a part of each person’s transformation. We were touched by their stories and excited to help give the participants a new grasp on their inner beauty, along with a new look to show the world. You nominated them and we fell in love with them. Upgraded Living is proud to present our 3rd Annual New Year, New You Makeovers! Briana Lindstrom and Alyssa Worley Michelle Camy, Bree Chun, Joel Fricker, Briana Lindstrom 49
Nominated by her friend, Wendy O’Neil: “I would like to nominate my friend Athena Dryer because she is a very hard working single mama who didn’t choose her life circumstances but has not given up and deserves some pampering that she doesn’t have to pay for. P.s. I’ll watch her kids while she’s treated if she wins.”
Before
With a name like Athena, it is no wonder she is such a beautiful, strong woman. Three years ago she was suddenly left alone with her kids, no income and nowhere to live. With the help of friends and family, and the determination to carry all the suffering without letting
it reach her children, she was able to start from scratch and make a new life for herself and her kids. She came to us with a recently obtained bachelor’s degree from Chico state and a sweet smile as she triumphantly admitted “parenting is becoming fun again.” We were happy to see her through a day of much-deserved pampering and her kids witnessed the final elements of Athena’s transformation. “I almost didn’t recognize her!” Her son, Michael told me as we walked to the final photo shoot where Athena was full of light and absolutely stunning.

FACIAL AND MAKEUP:
Metamorfoz Skin & Beauty 341 Broadway St. Suite #208, Chico (530) 570-5184
Sherri and Chloë are the perfect mother-daughter pair to make you look and feel beautiful inside and out. As Athena settled in for her facial, we all had a tearful moment talking about her nomination. Typical girls: in a spa, laughing, crying, and hugging! “Tears are the fountain of youth,” says Sherri, “if you hold it all in, it makes you bitter and ugly.” She encourages Athena to let her true beauty shine through and revives that beauty with Osmosis products made with gentle natural botanicals. Tiffany Smith
Nominated by herself: “I’m a full time stay at home mom of two (3 year old girl and 9 month old son). I work four part time jobs from home and the majority of my days are spent caring for my son who has been classified as “failure to thrive” since three months old. So my “spare” time is usually spent with doctors and specialists all working to help him gain weight and thrive. Needless to say, having time to do my hair or even put on mascara is a rare luxury these days, particularly with Christmas around the corner and trying to make enough money to give my kids a memorable holiday. The husband and I have decided not to give each other gifts and instead put whatever we can towards the kids and family this year… a few hours away for myself just to breathe would be a dream come true. Thank you for the opportunity to enter your contest.”
There’s a diva hiding somewhere in this timid on the outside hard-working mama! “Sometimes I feel like Marilyn Monroe, sometimes I feel like Stevie Nicks,” says Tiffany about her ideal personal style. So when she was able to have a day for herself, we were happy to see she really went for it! She went for blonde, she went for sparkly platforms, and she achieved her goal of wanting to “look sexy, not like an old mom.”
HAIR AND MAKEUP: The Poison Apple 313 Walnut Street, Suite 100, Chico (530) 899-7875 Kim is always an expert at knowing what’s hot in the world of hair fashion. “Current styles are loose, soft and feminine. A lot of people are embracing
thei r own natu ral tex tu re,” she explained as she evened out the back of Tiffany’s grown-out bob to make it easier to wear straight or naturally wavy. She brightened the color and heightened the glamour by adding blonde color and lots of shine. Morgan used a combination of Youngblood mineral cosmetics and a few of her other favorite brands to highlight Tiffany’s cheeks, eyes and lips and even out her skin’s classic ivory glow.
STYLING: Labelz 974 Mangrove Avenue, Chico (530) 345-1615 Jordan helped Tiffany up her glam factor in a gorgeous peach dress with a classic silhouette and a bit of bling on the cuffs and collar. A touch of sparkle in her earrings and gold glitter platform heels left Tiffany’s fear of looking “like an old mom” as nothing but a distant dream.

Shirley Bolin
Nominated by her daughter, Meaghann Tenuta: “I believe my mother, Shirley Bolin, deserves a makeover. Not only is she a mother of six kids, but a grandmother to six kids as well. She volunteers for free for the Red Cross. Every week she handles multiple local catastrophes like providing for people in need after house fires. She works very hard and is a wonderful mother. As a family we have struggled since my father passed away in 2008. I think my mother would love a makeover and it would be something wonderful for her this Holiday Season!” Thanks to Meaghann for sending us her lovely mother. Shirley has the endearing balance of a safe, loving grandmother mixed with the innocent, happy spirit of a child. Soft-spoken, warm and earnest with an adorably shy side, we fell in love with her throughout the day and admire her spunk for rocking bangs and brightly colored hair. 54

Leah Fernandez Nominated (twice!) by her husband, Daniel Fernandez: “My wife desperately needs the new year makeover. She has not had a new look or change in 4 years and I can’t think of a more selfless person to give a new look to. She goes without new clothes so her children can have what they need and she cuts and colors her own hair to save for them. I would love to see her finally have something for herself. I am blown away every day by how she puts herself on the back burner for our children. I just wish there was a way to show her how much we appreciate her and all she does.” When Leah found out her husband nominated her for a day of pampering, she was “totally shocked!” Spending the day with her, we could easily see why her husband was in love 56

Nominated by her friend, Summer Duncan: “My friend Jessica Ryan is a hard working single mother who is currently going back to school to earn her Master’s degree, working and taking care of her kids. She always goes out of her way with the little bit of free time she has, to be a good friend. She is beautiful inside and out already, but she is very deserving of being pampered.” Within minutes of meeting Jessica, I knew three things for sure: 1: This girl is driven. 2: This girl is inquisitive. 3: This girl has a smile that makes you want to shape your hands into a heart and fill the negative space with her face. She’s so stinkin’ cute! Although she loved her day of pampering and looked amazing with her full-on Mecca makeover, she 58
was equally interested in getting to know the other makeover winners’ personal stories and was curious about the transformation of each participant; social work is definitely her calling. Lisa Garibay
Nominated by Bill Slack, Shelter Supervisor at Torres Community Shelter: “Lisa arrived at the shelter in 2012 with two teenage children. When a family break-up forced Lisa out of her home in Oregon, Lisa returned to her childhood home of Butte County.
Most people who reside in the Torres Shelter have some previous experience with homelessness, but for Lisa and her family were new to homelessness. Throughout her stay at the Torres Shelter Lisa did everything she could to make sure that it was a positive learning experience for her children. She refused to let them use the situation as an excuse to let their school work suffer; it was Lisa’s question about a place for her children to study that led to the Torres Shelter’s partnership with a couple of teachers in the area to provide tutoring in the evening. While her children were in school Lisa spent her days in search of 62
employment; some days you could see the disappointment and frustration in Lisa’s eyes as she checked her family in for the night. But even on those days, when her eyes would fill with tears, you could still sense that Lisa was not someone to give up on her dream of providing herself and her children with a better life. Even on the worst days Lisa still found the strength to be positive in front of her children. It is because of Lisa’s indomitable spirit and her refusal to give up on the dream of providing a better life for herself and her children that made Lisa our choice for this makeover. If ever a mother could use a little pampering it’s Lisa.” When we met Lisa in person, it wasn’t struggle that stood out, but strength; we saw a laid back, yet smart and sassy woman who is fun to be around and has a contagious curly-que

Discussion on Cancer Screening by Dr. Sam Mazj
The main goal of cancer screening is to reduce the number of people who develop and die from cancer. Scientists have developed, and continue to develop, tests that can be used to screen a person for cancer. Many people think that the main purpose of these screening tests is to look for cancer in people who don’t have any signs of the disease, or to find cancer in an early, easily treatable stage. But the overall goals of cancer screening are to: • Lower the number of people who die from the disease, or eliminate deaths from cancer altogether. • Lower the number of people who develop the disease. Not all screening tests are beneficial Although some cancer screening tests have proven benefits that can help achieve these goals, others do not. When talking about cancer screening, it’s important to understand that these tests can increase the apparent “cure rate” of a cancer without
68
UPGRADED LIVING | JANUARY 2014 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
actually affecting how many people die from the disease or the risk of dying from the disease. That’s because sometimes cancer screening tests find cancer that isn’t causing a person harm and won’t cause a person harm in his or her lifetime. Because cancer screening tests can detect some tumors that don’t need to be treated, improved cancer survival rates don’t always mean that a test benefits everyone. In fact, the risks of having a screening test could outweigh the advantages. The best way to tell if a screening test has actual benefits, including a decrease in cancer deaths, is through randomized controlled clinical trials (research studies in people). Talk with your doctor about which screening tests are right for you and the benefits and risks of these tests Check back in next month’s issue for a continuation of the discussion on cancer screening. by Dr. Dina Rabo, DC You’re on the verge of making some exciting, positive, and lasting changes in your life. Then it happens….the thought of failure. What if I don’t succeed? What will friends and family think? What if I do succeed? Will I like the new me? Change is good, it’s what keeps life fresh and makes things exciting, and yes sometimes scary with the unknown. In the process of wanting to change your life for the better and live healthier, there often comes anxiety and adversity to change. So how do we overcome those barriers? Here are a few suggestions: - Confide in someone you know who will support and honor your decision, whether it be a coach, a friend, someone who realizes the importance in this decision of yours, you need someone who will not judge you, but rather offer support and listen, and not lecture you or “problem-solve” for you.
- Put your focus on the future goal. If it’s weight loss, what are the gains? Positive self- image, being able to have energy to play with your kids or grandkids? - Be real about the facts; what will you be giving up and missing and also what will you be gaining. Give yourself permission to fail at times. If you have a bad day, don’t give up, with transition comes trial and error, get back in the saddle and know the rewards of change will inevitably occur more frequently over time. - Get comfortable with change. If you’re comfortable in your baggy sweats, get out of them for one day. Baby steps, if you go to the same store grocery shopping, go somewhere else. Knowing what you should do is not the same as taking action…so as Nike says , “Just do it!” Dr. Dina Rabo, DC 530.846.6262 rabochiropracticcenter.com
Hitting the Nail on the Head by Scott Amick, CPT
Does your New Year’s Resolution include getting more active, paying more attention to what you eat, or burning off a few holiday cookie calories? If so, I recommend carefully considering the MODE in which you are planning to exercise. All of you baby boomers out there should think twice before increasing your walking or jogging activity from sedentary all the way up to five miles a day over a short time period. The repetitive impact of the movement is likely to leave joints sore, your core and pelvic floor de-conditioned and unprepared to support your spine, and your legs stiff from inflexibility. The impact factor is even more pronounced for those who have spine and lower extremity surgeries such as hip replacements, knee surgeries, and ankle fusions. My favorite image to give my clients is that of a nail being tapped into wood by a metaphorical “Gravity Hammer” as their foot lands when they walk or jog. If at all possible, wouldn’t it be great to control the effects of that hammer? Here is the Advanced Body Dynamics plan to help you gradually increase your running or jogging activity with the appropriate progressive overload. • Prepare nutritionally • Begin a daily stretching routine • Plan your recovery strategy to include active recovery sessions • Discuss progressive overload timeframe • Start walking or jogging! ABD exclusively offers submerged treadmill water walking in our rehabilitation and gait therapy programming. By starting in the water, we can control the amount of impact on your musculoskeletal system while you walk or run. advanced-body.com 2201 Pillsbury Rd, Chico, CA 95926 530.781.2639
