From family dinners and entertaining, to game night and help with homework, there are few places in the home that bring loved ones together quite like the dining room table. John and Christie Peterson, co-owners of Chico Nut Company understand this all too well; it’s why they trusted the most communal of rooms in their home to Nantucket Home, Inc. With a beautifully appointed space perfect for entertaining, they can be sure that their dining room will attract friends and family for generations to come. 11

I practiced. I wanted to know the truth about God. In my mind, the monastic lifestyle offered the greatest chance of discovering that truth. The monastery also seemed like an escape from my suffering. I imagined bland meals and chanting. I dreamed of saffron colored robes and peace of mind. I prayed these spiritual warriors would accept me. Someone just had to. At 25, I’d come to my crossroad. The conflict between who I was and who I thought I was supposed to be in order to please God – in order to be accepted in this world – was destroying any chance of real happiness. After more than a decade of trying to guilt, shame and hate myself into not being gay, what was left of me was in pieces. I was terrified of leaving Christianity behind, but something had to change. Either God could love me as I was or I was meant to live without God’s love. I needed to find out. The scale had finally tipped. I was more frightened of a life of endless suffering than a death in Hell. I kneeled beside my bed in Hill’s house and asked, for the umpteenth time, for God’s forgiveness. I couldn’t remember a time when I wasn’t sorry for who I was. I needed a new start. I hoped to find a place to worship God where His followers didn’t reject me as I was. I’d go to Nova Scotia and call God by a different name. Certainly the Creator of all things would not be offended by something as insignificant as semantics. Of course, if anyone could understand, it was God. So, instead of explaining my decision, I just begged Him to find me at the monastery. I would be waiting. Bang. Bang! BANG!! I shook off the last thought in my mind just in time to realize there was a knock at the front door. It was so late. Come to think of it, it was the middle of the night. Wait. Come to think of it, I had been lost in thought for the first time in years. I’d been thinking things through. I had made a decision to move. I wrapped the burnt orange cardigan I had resting on the couch around my shoulders and walked to the front door. My tea was ice cold. I looked at the cable network box on top of the television, and its neon green lights revealed it was 2 a.m.

Children’s Shopping Spree Holding onto the hands of their newly befriended chaperones, 35 local kids with big smiles and worn out shoes flooded Kohl’s on August 17 for a back-to-school shopping spree. The Active 20-30 Club of Chico sponsors this event yearly, using the money they make at the Margarita Mix-Off to give back to the kids of our community. Youth for Change, Boys and Girls Club, Valley Oaks Children’s Services, Esplanade House, and North Valley Catholic Social Service nominated kids who they felt could use a little extra help getting ready for the school year, and each kid was paired with a volunteer chaperone and $100 from the Active 20-30 Club of Chico. With a list of sizes and needs, each pair shopped the store for an hour piling socks, underwear, sweaters, shoes, and any other back-to-school need into baskets, trying to stay within budget, and having a blast while doing it. Kohl’s graciously added an extra 20% off each ticket, and it was nothing but smiles and high-fives as each team left the building. Former Active 20-30 Club member, Mike Lash cooked up a delicious pancake breakfast to follow, and back-to-school haircuts were donated by Dimensions Salon who set up an entire row of outdoor salon chairs and equipment to have each kid looking and feeling fabulous for the new school year. “One never stands so tall, when kneeling to help a child.” The Active 20-30 Club of Chico truly embodies their motto, and we were touched to be in attendance at an event filled with so much heart and happiness. Lloyd Liebes Local Legend Inside the door of an ordinary home in an ordinary neighborhood lives an extraordinary man named Lloyd Liebes. Many locals recognize the name as the artist of the captivating 3D flower photos that look like vivid paintings, shown in venues and businesses all around town; but he has even more of a story to tell.

Lloyd attended Burlingame High school and then the University of Miami for a year but “got tired of wasting Dad’s money,” so he went back to his roots in New York. Ready to take on the big city as an adult, Lloyd immediately began to seek work, introducing himself to several shops in the area. World renowned department store

chain, Saks 5th Avenue hired him to work clothing in the boys department. From there, he got work at Franklin Simon, which then was a chain of 52 stores, as a general troubleshoot for anything they might need. After a few years working for the bigwigs in NYC, it was back to the Golden State.

Sitting across the table, I know that I am in the presence of a photography legend. Lloyd’s eyes tell a story of their own as he organizes his thoughts to explain where he came from, and the many events and happenstances that mashed together to make his life story. Although born in New York City, most of his time was spent living in a place well known to us Northern See Californians as “The City,” a l San Francisco. His family lect arger se owned a huge clothing i o no pho business founded in togr f Lloyd’ 1864 called Women’s onlin aphy a s Ready to Wear that th e ga WWW llery is grew to take up 6 floors . .LIEB of inventory. Once it ESPH came time to expand, OTO .CO the Liebes family bought M an office owned by William Van Buren, a relative of our 8th President, which was located next door to Neiman Marcus; a prestigious location to say the least. Business continued to thrive and expand for the family and they bought one of the few homes in newly developing Hillsboro. It was the perfect location to raise a family, with plenty of room for Lloyd to run around as an active little boy. 23

An enlistment in the Korean War in 1951 left Lloyd hospitalized for 6 months. Once out of the army, it was time he went back to the family store, H. Liebes & Company. For 15 years, he worked: he went from the stock floor, to the head of furs department (yep, a whole department dedicated solely to furs: my how times have changed!), to the coats and suits section, and finally to the head of advertising. Eventually he left the store, knowing there was more out of there for him. One day he got a phone call from Mark Twain’s nephew, Jerry Clemens, who wanted Lloyd’s help promoting a youth fair sponsored by American Airlines in the city. Lloyd had started a youth program through the clothing store which was quite successful. Jerry had gotten word so he invited Lloyd to join forces in promoting sales for the airline. And so began his career in advertising and marketing. He and his three other partners did promotion sales with big name corporations like American Airlines, Pepsi, Coke, and organized programs for these companies all around this part of the country. Further down the road, Lloyd worked on hit movie, 2001: A Space Oddysey. On that film, one of Elizabeth Taylor’s ex-husbands, Mike Todd created a new camera lens called the Todd AO. It was a revolutionary widescreen film lens that allowed one camera to shoot the whole width of the shot, instead of piecing together shots from three 24

cameras which created a sort of thin separation on the screen between camera shots and was the norm at the time. Similar to an IMAX theater now, this breakthrough lens made it seem like you were in the movie, not just a viewer. Lloyd Liebes, special photographic effects supervisor, Douglas Trumbull, and Mike Todd all worked together in creating that new look. Moving further along in his career, throughout much of the 1960s Lloyd was flown all over the world to do photography for Royal Viking Cruise Ships. He told me modestly as an afternote, “I never did any of these things first, they fell in my lap and I did my best.” In 1972 he opened a hugely successful modeling school in San Francisco with two top models as his partners, and only working professionals as teachers. It quickly became the best, most innovative modeling school in the world. Student models would go to runways for class and watch their own teacher walk in the show. This provided a real-life exposure to the world of fashion, with advice and instruction from people who were literally walking the walk. His photography studio was within the school and he was constantly busy with high brand designer fashion shoots. Every bit of the photography for Macy’s women’s department clothing was Lloyd’s creation and work. Department stores from all over the city requested his photos. Being that photography equipment is so expensive, he

UPGRADED LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2013 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

decided to build all that he needed in his studio. By that time, “Lloyd Liebes” was a name designers knew. Portrait requests by huge names like Jane Fonda, Jane Russell, many ‘70s bands, Edith Head, and Richard Avedon poured in. Lloyd was not afraid to break the mold in photography practices. He became known for bringing a generator to each shoot, which made it possible to create a studio on any location. Lloyd’s fashion photos were uniquely artistic, and pushed the envelope on what was expected. He shot with a 1,000 mm lens and was famous for jumping action shots. After a long and wildly successful career in studio work, he closed down in 1982. He moved to Chico with his wife in 2005 when she was offered a great job opportunity here. He misses the sweet smelling hibiscus that grew on his front porch at his home in Marin County, and understandably going to the theater and opera, but loves the quiet here and “does not miss the traffic at all.” I could truly go on and on about the stories Lloyd told me, especially after the house tour of all his portraits and cityscape photography. It was an incredible honor to get to speak with a true living legend. Lloyd left me with this quote by Einstein: “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” and with a twinkle in his eye, he nodded me goodbye and I knew he taught me a bit about just how important imagination can be. FOCUS

FILM FESTIVAL Chico has an undeniable love for films and the independent Pageant Theater is proof of that. With a line that runs down the block as standard practice before each show, it’s no surprise that our town is also home to a fair share of film festivals and one for nearly every type of person. We have festivals that cater to those with short attention spans, those looking to get away from the standard big box plot lines and endings, those that prefer the color green, those who’d rather see life in technicolor, and those averse to sound altogether. With such a variety of viewer-specific options, it’s helpful for the community to have an event that appeals to the broad human experience; it’s called the FOCUS Film Festival. The FOCUS Film Festival is the only film festival in Northern California that explores documentary and narrative films celebrating diversity and inclusion. Through the festival, the hope is that the community will also learn to better embrace diversity not as a difference, but as a blend of varied and valuable contributions. FOCUS will feature twenty-two films over the span of two days — Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th — and will take place on Chico State’s campus at Colusa Hall. A project of Far Northern Regional Center, a non-profit organization that provides services and support to people with developmental disabilities and their families, the festival is funded through grants and community donations. FOCUS’ main partner in Chico is the CSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This year’s kickoff will take place in Sierra Nevada’s Big Room at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 3rd and will feature a blessing and traditional music from the local Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria. Chief Caleen Sisk, of the Winnemem Wintu tribe, will discuss her tribe’s journey prior to the showing of the film, Dancing Salmon Home. A number of the films shown throughout the weekend are already embraced by local groups — Valentine Road is being hosted by Stonewall Alliance and GSEC, High Ground is hosted by the Chico State Student Veterans Organization, Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter is hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association of Chico, and the Chico State Counseling and Wellness Center and UMatter are hosting A Sister’s Call. Several film stars and directors will be in attendance and the festival promises to be a success as it has been every year since its inception in 2005. We’re looking forward to being in attendance and we hope that you’ll make the time to see us there! World Music Festival Chico State’s Chico Performances program is known for bringing big name performers to the stage at Laxson Auditorium month-after-month throughout the school year, and if you’ve seen their sidebar ad in our magazine over the past few months, you’ll know that this year is no different. From musicians like country legend Bonnie Raitt to the more contemporary Andrew Bird and big name performances like Stomp and the Food Network’s Alton Brown Live there is clearly no shortage of must-see performances this year. Amongst all the shouting about big names and their even bigger buses, there is one event that has held a special place in our hearts since we were children and we’re excited to share in its twentieth anniversary. The Chico World Music Festival has been delighting young and old alike since 1993. A conglomeration of some of the best acts in the world music genre, the festival seamlessly combines fun, food, art, and music for the entire family; best of all — aside from the food and kickoff performance at Laxson — everything is completely free. This year, the festival will take place at Chico State’s campus on four separate stages over the span of two days with a kick-off performance on Friday September 13th and free music and activities on Saturday September 14th. The Friday evening show at Laxson Auditorium will star internationally acclaimed ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro, who has earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. Declared a “hero” by Rolling Stone magazine, his repertoire includes jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass, classical, and folk music. A master of all genres, there is little he can’t play, and a quick search on YouTube should prove that statement. The show will take place at Laxson Auditorium on Friday, September 13th at 7:30 pm with tickets ranging from $18 to $32. Saturday’s events include continuous music from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., a kids stage with performances by kids for kids, free art classes hosted by the Chico Art Center, free crafts for kids hosted by The Museum of Anthropology, an interactive booth by Gateway Science Museum, the gigantic strolling Sawmill puppets, international food and lots of shopping in the crafts and artisan booths. With summer coming to a close, the Chico World Music Festival is an excellent way to transition the family into fall and the backto-school mindset. Visit the festival’s website at www.chicoperformances.com for more information. We’ll look forward to seeing you there! Aveed Khaki

From Indonesia To Paradise When Karen Cover’s son began his schooling at Chico State University, she decided it would be the perfect time to buy a second home nearby.

To open the kitchen to the rest of the home, Sean removed a dividing wall that needlessly sat between the living room and kitchen counter, thereby tying both rooms together. He replaced the old and dated countertops with dream yellow granite slabs, and the worn cabinetry with Shaker-inspired, Malaysian oak stained gumwood cabinets. Owner Kevin Wu helped with the kitchen remodel himself and even found Karen the exact range hood she was looking for. As per New Again’s standard of working with other local contractors to ensure the best possible product, Sean invited Lindsey Glass from Wolfe Electric in Chico to complete the design and execution of the new electrical elements including a beautiful

A traveler by nature, Karen’s husband had taken a job with Chevon early in their lives together, and the job quickly amounted to a career that would take the two on fantastic adventures throughout the world, and into some of the most remote areas it had to offer. Eventually the two landed in Indonesia, and it has been home ever since. After visiting her son, and exploring Chico’s surrounding areas, Karen fell in love with Paradise. She began to search for a home in the area, and with the help of a local real estate agent found a location that resembled the landscape she had come to adore in Indonesia. House of Hope At Upgraded Living, we see our fair share of philanthropic stories — and happen to write a few as well. These stories that we see on a near daily basis are truly the most rewarding stories for us issue-after-issue. They illustrate the human condition and it never ceases to amaze us at how effective we, as human beings, can be at making significant change in our world when we work together. The following story is proof of that sentiment and how four women could come together to make a difference in the lives of eleven others, 36

UPGRADED LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2013 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

and as time goes on, countless more. Real estate agent Laurie Maloney and Director of Services for the Jesus Center, Shelly Watson, had long talked about the need to transition rehabilitated women from the Sabbath House into standard housing. The sober living houses that existed simply allowed rehabilitated women to live in a different housing environment from the shelter but didn’t teach them the skills necessary to make it on their own after leaving the sober living home. As a result, a number of women who had left the sober living houses found themselves right back at the Sabbath House within a relatively short period of time Laurie expressed her frustration with the situation to fellow real estate agent Nancy Wolfe-McCord on May 14th and the two began to discuss creative ways to fund a house that would provide the training these women needed to be successful in the outside world. As they were both members of the Chico Association of REALTORS® (CAOR), they decided to look within their own organization first, to see if change could be made from through the association’s membership. Laurie and Nancy approached Peggy Mead, CAOR’s association executive about a membership drive that would request ten dollars per month from each of the four hundred and fifty members to pay for the rent and utilities to make a new home possible. Peggy joined the team and together they created a video with Shelly which the presented to CAOR’s board of directors on June 6th in hopes of receiving the funding. By the end of the day, they had a check for $26,000. By the end of June, the team of four had identified a house, signed the paperwork, and received keys on July 8th. As a home to some rather messy college students, a considerable amount of repair was needed before opening the home to its new residents. The women called upon the association’s membership and community via Facebook for support and in 2 ½ weeks the home had been completely renovated, and named House of Hope, with approximately 95% of the furnishings donated being brand new. Upwards of $50,000 in products and services were donated during that 2 ½ timeframe and not a single dollar had to come from the Jesus Center. A month has since gone by and people are still contributing. The fully renovated house is now home to eleven women. With six bedrooms and four bathrooms, providing living arrangements for ten women in transition and one house manager to oversee its operation. The home will be self-sustaining within the first year, allowing all ten women to live in a safe and low cost environment with other women that are sharing the same experience transitioning into a new lifestyle. The project took two months to complete and the women are now looking to other community organizations to get onboard. Perhaps most exciting, is that the project could be replicated in any community through similar associations as well. While studying at Chico State, Albert Seeno III decided he would follow in his family’s footsteps and join in their real estate development business. After falling in love with Chico during his short time here, he spearheaded Creekside Landing, one of the first large subdivisions in north Chico. The community saw instant success and the company soon decided to open its second community, Tuscany Village, across the road. Five-and-one-half years since opening the first subdivision at Creekside Landing, the second full community, Tuscany Village, is almost completely sold out. With one hundred and ten homes sold in total, there are now only four homes remaining for sale before the next phase of development, three of which are the newly released and fully furnished model homes that visitors have come to adore. 44

Though the homesites developed by Discovery Homes have provided beautiful dwellings for both residents and newcomers to the area, housing is not all that this company has given to our community. The Discovery Gives Back Program donates $1,000 from the sale of every home to a Chico school of the new homeowner’s choice — to date, the promotion has raised over $100,000 for local schools. The development has also provided a wealth of jobs for local contractors whose work is overseen by superintendent, and longtime Chico resident, Pat Burns. As the housing market has quickly begun gaining momentum in northern California, there is no better time to buy than right now, and Discovery Homes is making the opportunity even more enticing during their seventy-fifth anniversary. In celebration of seventy-five years in business,

annins Talk If visitors asked Chico locals where one could get a drink in town, no one would hesitate with an answer. There are limitless options, most of which attract crowds who start the night with a mission: get in, get out, pass out. But if you’re looking for an experience, if you want to enliven your senses, if you want to engage, visit Tannins Wine Bar & Bistro. Nate and Tori met at a local Chico restaurant, Nate was the general bar manager, and Tori the general manager by day. They became close friends instantly, both sharing the same dream: to one day open their own restaurant. When the convenient location downtown opened up to lease, they jumped on the opportunity to begin the creation of their very own wine bar. Nate and Tori offer an eclectic wine list. “We don’t want to carry wines that you can find at your local Safeway or Costco,” Tori explains. The caring and respectful relationship they have with their customers is evident from their knowledge of wine and the attentiveness to your palate. They want people to find a wine that is personalized to each individual. Let’s face it, we’re not all the same. My friend Nikki and I tried the wine flights and both liked the wine that the other had ordered. A Cabernet and Zinfandel fan myself, I was surprised by the last wine that Nate recommended, a blend. “I don’t like sweet.” I told him. He encouraged me to try Drops of Jupiter by… wait for it…the band, Train, who partnered with Concannon Vineyard in Livermore to create this Petite Sirah. I was more than satisfied by the quiet sweetness of the full bodied fruit in this delicious red blend. Celebrating its 6 month anniversary in August, Tannins may be new, but a visit here will never get old. Aimed to please, Nate and Tori feature new dishes and new wines as they get a feeling for their customers’ desires. Come in for an hour, or two. Nate says, “We’re not trying to flip tables, we want to talk to our customers and we want you to come back because you really liked your time here.” Tuesday & Wednesday: 4pm-9pm | Thursday-Saturday: 4pm-10pm

Centered on family and close friends, we would gather around the big dining room table that would always need additional chairs borrowed from neighbors to warmly accommodate everyone. 46

I have fond memories of watching my mom, aunts, cousins, and grandmothers in the kitchen laughing, talking, cooking, and enjoying their wine. In our Italian family I was allowed a small watered-down sample of wine with our dinner, usually consisting of lots of carbs, meat and special family spaghetti sauce that could never be too spicy. COMANCHE CREEK

Second generation Chico native and founder of Comanche Creek Farms, Jim Miller proudly upholds his rural roots providing quality heirloom produce to the community and promoting eating local. 51

where your food comes from than to grow it for yourself? Although they would love to contribute to the Chico Farmer’s Market Comanche Creek’s high volume of quality goods would run out smaller vendors. Despite this minor setback, they still distribute weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes of assorted of fruits and veggies, which changes every week—this week’s box of treasures ranged from tart pluots to a painted serpent cucumber the size of Miller’s three-year-old grandson, Caleb. Boxes are assembled to provide a full scope of balanced nutrition and each is equipped with recipes. Fortunately, a major shift has occurred in the community over the past five years. With things like Chico’s campaign “Buy local, eat local,” the Miller’s have quadrupled their sales in the last three years. People’s habits are changing and their taste for natural foods seems to be a step in the right direction. The Millers say they are driven by one aim: an ongoing quest for quality, a term that dictates every facet of the Comanche

Creek farming process. Best known for its heirloom tomatoes, of which it boasts over 38 varieties and counting. Although the term heirloom has been corrupted for commercial gain, heirloom refers to any open-pollinated, non-hybrid strain of plant that’s ancestry has been preserved through the collection and passing down of that variety’s seeds in order to preserve its genealogy. Preserving a plant’s genealogy is crucial because enduring plants have managed adapt to harmful variables and survive things like harsh climates and diseases consequently passing down these beneficial traits to the next generation, making native heirlooms optimal for organic farming. The farm’s reputation is founded by its consistency in yielding superior products for their high end vendors including Crush, Leon’s Bistro and Red Tavern, just to name a few. Jim explains how it was the common practice of picking the tomato

during its green-state and then quickly refrigerating the product until it reaches the shelf, terminating the ripening process and creating mealy, styrofoam-like tomatoes. So, although that spongy tomato was able to shift from green to red, it was taken from the vine too early, and was therefore unable to reach its full potential. Rejecting these traditional farming techniques, Jim has learned to take the risk and leave the fruit on the vine, allowing the sugars to develop to their peak potential. These practices are time-sensitive, but effective, and whatever fresh veggies can’t make it to market in time are donated to local charity organizations. Comanche Creek advocates sustainable farming. Just because something is labeled “certified” does not make it “organic.” Certified only guarantees that that person has grown a product, while certified organic signifies years of natural and sustainable land practices. As organically certified farmers, the Millers pay special attention to their soil, rotating crops meticulously and using only green-fertilizer to restore proper nutrients. By systematically alternating in functional crops like their nine varieties of heirloom beans, which naturally reintroduces nitrogen into the soil, the Millers have watched the colors of the land evolve from burnt rust to a dark mahogany. These beans also provide a good source of protein for people with highly plant-based diets like Brandon’s wife, Kristin. Rich compost is substituted for synthetic fertilizers while ladybugs and quail take care of pests nat53

urally in place of manufactured pesticides. Once an avid hunter, Jim admits the families of quail that use his tomato posts to mate have turned him off the sport entirely. The Millers welcome these and other native fauna such as the friendly river otter that seem drawn to this flourishing ecosystem just off the creek. Iridescent Great Whites, melon striped Green Zebras, ruby encrusted Red Cherries, and Indigo Roses the color of dusk—the Millers recognize each facet and individual cut of every imperfectly translucent genus in their arsenal. They are able to distinguish between the countless varieties and determine at a glance not only the breed, but the lineage of that particular plant’s ancestry. Although preservation of pedigree is important, the Millers like to introduce trial crops, even experimenting with new creations by isolating distinctive characteristics through generations of breeding. Jim is a Willy Wonka of veggies, easily sorting through the tangle of yellow gumdrops with seasoned hands selecting the perfect orb that bursts with such sweet mango flavor you’d almost forget you were eating a tomato. Gems like this golden morsel color the property. It’s surprising what candied treasures they’ve managed to tuck into these neat rows of green. Whether or not they will continue to grow their business is yet to be determined. Though there is huge potential for growth, it would be hard to maintain the quality for which they have strived. When asked for his advice to the community, the seasoned son of agriculture simply replied, “Know what you’re eating.” Eating clean is clearly a way of life for Jim Miller and his family. Developed over three generations of hearty Chico stock and the insight to recognize and pursue a few unexpected opportunities, Jim and his family are a great testament to what is great about this town. They support their community by not only physically providing better food options, but also through promoting a healthy lifestyle in their efforts to lead by example. It’s families like the Millers that prove hard work and innovative approaches to farming are the cornerstones of sustainability. Dani Weast Frank Rebelo 54

Too Wired to Workout? by Scott Amick

I am not talking about having too much caffeine pre-workout, I am talking about wearing those unfashionable, annoying, old-school wired headphones while you exercise. As Pinocchio once realized, strings will hold you down! Wireless headsets are now the functional and fashionable way to listen to your favorite tunes while working out. As technology continues to advance, casual exercisers, fitness buffs, and fitness fashion aficionados alike are ditching the wires for a whole new listening experience.

A Coach for Weight Loss? By Dr. Dina Rabo, DC I’m sure we’ve all at one time or another in our life had someone along the way we’ve worked with to “enhance our skills” or hired to “improve our game,” or “challenge us to excel in a particular area.” Whether it is in athletics, business, personal gain, or a general “life coach,” there comes a time that we could use some motivation to get us “to the next level.” Well….what about a weight loss coach? I’m not talking about going into a clinic, standing on a scale, having someone check off a few measurements and give you a list or bag of diet foods and say “good luck and we’ll see you next week.” I know when I’ve wanted to excel at something I’ve sought out a coach, mentor, someone who has done it, been there, and can get me from Point A to Point B effectively and expediently. Why wouldn’t you want to do it in an area that

is so challenging for most individuals, to be so disciplined around food and habits or emotional eating? Having someone to motivate you, who understands you, your daily schedule and pitfalls, your habits, and your health history as well as who can give you options, encouragement, and educate you about things you don’t think of. It’s nice to have some guidance and support when you’re so used to your own lifestyle habits that you can’t continue to keep yourself from “falling off the wagon” at the next wedding, birthday party, work BBQ, business crisis, reunion, etc. Having a coach is nothing short of ensuring your success at something you really want. It gives you incentive to push on and stay the course. Dr. Dina Rabo, DC 530.846.6262 rabochiropracticcenter.com

The Big Shift By Renée Michel, MBA Financial Advisor at Asset Management Group Last year the first wave of baby boomers reached full retirement age. According to aarp.org an additional 8,000 will turn 65 (full retirement age) every day for the next 18 years. That is over 52 million people – most of who will need to shift their investment objective from accumulation to distribution. During the accumulation stage investors are focused on saving enough to retire and growing their savings. The time horizon for this stage is often known or at least projected, as we all have an idea of when we would like to retire. Although markets and the economies around the globe cannot be controlled, during the accumulation stage there are some things we can control. Investors have the ability to adjust the amount they save, how they invest those savings and can choose to delay retirement if their accumulation goal is not met. As investors shift their investment objectives from accumulation to distribution, a lot changes. The time horizon for their investments is now an unknown, as nobody knows exactly how long they will live. The focus shifts from growing their savings to generating enough annual income to live comfortably, and assure that they will not outlive their money. The big shift is a big deal and retirement income planning is essential. If you are within 10-15 years of your ideal retirement age, you should be meeting with a financial advisor at least annually to review your savings plan and retirement income goals. HAVE YOU LISTENED LATELY?

Radio Frequency Technology for Skin Tightening: by Dr. Vimali Paul This procedure is widely used for contouring, specifically because it is non-invasive, non-ablative, and has minimal downtime. It also delivers relatively quick results. Some clients notice a difference the first day! Measurements are taken at the first visit to document the amount of reduction and progressive changes. Radio-frequency is emitted into the skin to heat up the treatment area to 40-44 degrees Celsius. This causes superficial toning and tightening by releasing excess fluids from the underlying fat cells. It is designed to reduce wrinkles and cellulite, and can be used on: face, neck, arms, buttocks, thighs, abdomen, and “love handles.” As the water molecules are released, there is a process of collagen remodeling and connective tissue formation that makes the skin appear firmer and tighter. Once the collagen is heated by the radio-frequency pulses, it responds by starting to regenerate and “plump up” to function like younger skin. This treatment is recommended in a series of 6 treatments, spaced 2 weeks apart. There may be some mild discomfort afterward, with some possible swelling and redness. Questions? Football Season Can Be A Penalty For Your Teeth!

How’s Your Stool?

by Dr. Michelle Anderson, DC

By Eric Eltzroth, DDS Are you ready for some football? It’s that time of the year again and nothing says football season like a big tub of Gatorade being dumped on the winning coach at the end of a game. But for you and your kids, this is a no-win situation for your dental health. Gatorade was originally developed at The University of Florida in 1965. It was intended for athletes who endured rigorous workouts in the hot sun. Somehow this drink has become a staple of our popular culture, and its combination of sugars, salt and electrolytes can be anything but healthy for the general public. Holly J. Benjamin, M.D., a member of the executive committee of the AAP Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness, states the following: “For most children engaging in routine physical activity, plain water is best. Sports drinks contain extra calories that children don’t need, and could contribute to obesity and tooth decay.” Even

worse are “energy drinks” – made with huge amounts of stimulants, some containing more than 500 mg of caffeine-- the equivalent of 14 cans of soda! That combined with excessive amounts of tooth-rotting sugar, and you’ve got a formula for disaster. Good old fashioned tap water, fortified with fluoride, not only remains the healthiest drink but it’s the least expensive as well. If you are a bottled-water person, try alkaline water, which may also help decrease the risk of developing cavities. Enjoy this football season, and remember not to let energy drinks and sports drinks “blitz” the dental and overall health of you and your children. Visit your dentist regularly so we can check for cavities and make recommendations on how to help prevent decay.

" When you lose your vision, you lose contact with things. When you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people." -Helen Keller

Health is like a three legged stool. One leg is diet and exercise, one leg is proper motion, and the third leg is healthy thoughts. The seat of this stool is being well adjusted. That provides stability for the three legs of the stool. The more energy and effort you put into those three legs, the stronger the legs get and the more healthy you become, as long as the top of the stool is stable. When you are well adjusted, your body becomes balanced and is then allowed to heal, to invest energy in nutrition, motion and thoughts, and to grow into true health. Many of my patients start care with the belief that I am healing them. They quickly learn that I am merely a facilitator of health. I work with the human body to remove interference in the nervous system. This allows for the brain to send nerve signals at full strength, which in turn has a direct positive effect on the way your body is able to heal. There is no way I can heal anyone. You are the only person who can heal you! Be proud that you have that power within you. My job is to help increase your healing potential - you take it from there. If you’re ready to have your power turned on or turned up, call us. We are the mechanic your body needs. Chico Spine & Wellness. Life Changing Care through Chiropractic.
