FROM THE EDITOR There is always a feeling of excitement and anticipation in the air when the season is changing, but when spring begins to poke its sunny face around the corner, I get especially giddy. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good rain and of course we need as much of it as we can get, but I’m a tad obsessed with these warm and bright Chico days. Green is everywhere, the almond trees are showing off their magnificent blossoms, and we’re beginning to venture back outside to enjoy it all. With these longer days comes more time to take advantage of this beautiful little piece of California we get to call home. I can’t help but look forward to showing my little one everything there is to love about Butte County. Even at seven months old, I can tell knows that all of the fun lies outside. As I type this, he’s likely watching the older kids at daycare with envy as they run freely around the playground. Good luck keeping Liam inside once he figures out how to use those legs, Miss Terrie! I already know he’s going to love exploring Upper Bidwell, letting his imagination run wild at Caper Acres, and splashing in the City Plaza fountain during Thursday Night Market. It makes me smile to think about the traditions that we treasure enough to preserve for generations to come. Speaking of traditions, this month we had the pleasure once again of putting together our annual spring fashion preview. It is always a treat to collaborate with the local clothiers who keep us in style year after year. We were fortunate enough to have Almendra Winery & Distillery in Durham as our gorgeous backdrop—the natural woods and warm, rustic elements creating the perfect complement to the cheery florals patterns and flowy fabrics we adore this time of year. If you haven’t taken the short drive out to Almendra yet, I highly recommend it. Admire the sights along the way and take advantage of this small window of perfect weather we’re given each year. Thank you for your continued support and readership!

Reason to

SMILE

In the business of improving oral hygiene since she was just 16, Dr. Loeta Robles started as a sterilization assistant to Dr. Beckett then moved up to dental hygienist and finally, after Dr. Beckett’s urging, a dentist. It is appropriate that Doctor Loeta Robles chose a career in dentistry, because through tough situations she has always found a way to grin and bear it. Commuting for four years to dental school at UCSF, and returning home on weekends to her two daughters and husband Jesse may seem like too difficult a challenge for some, but not for Dr. Robles. “I was always so driven to come home to my family and by Sunday night was rejuvenated. My thought was ‘just let me get back and get this done,’” Loeta says. Although she was voted most motivated student in her class and received honors in dentistry, Dr. Robles recognized early that she wasn’t working hard for awards; but instead to gain the most education in the field that she could. Buying the practice from her mentor and “second mama” Dr. Beckett in October 2015 has been a homecoming of sorts. Amazingly, most of the team has remained the same from when Loeta was 16. Continuing with the practice’s concentration on comfort, you walk into Dr. Robles’s spa like office, greeted by friendly staff. All patients are given a blanket, head pillow, and noise cancelling headphones to make the process more enjoyable. Paper mobiles hang above as you relax into the lush green landscape and natural light coming from the large windows. No detail left unnoticed, Dr. Robles’s goal is that all patients feel relaxed and cared for in her hands. She focuses on helping patients with prevention and treatment; specializing in crown and bridge, restoring implants, and operative procedures. Not only a renowned dentist, but also working mother and wife, Loeta gives her patients that reassuring touch some doctors lack. She listens carefully, using her 25 years of experience in dentistry to give exemplary care and make sure everybody leaves smiling.

PV HIGH PRESENTS: INTO THE WOODS JR.

The quiet chatter of the audience diminishes, the lights overhead dim, and the deep red curtains draw back, revealing the stage. The performance begins to tell the tale of a “young maiden, a carefree young lad and a childless baker with his wife.” Each character in the performance crosses each others paths, causing their stories to intertwine. Throughout the play, mistakes are made, truths are revealed, and lessons are learned. “Once upon a time, in a far off kingdom, there lay a small village at the edge of the woods,” begins the play.

“Into the Woods” is a musical that premiered on Broadway in 1987. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine collaborated to create this brilliant, complex piece. This April 13 through 15, Pleasant Valley High School is putting on an adaptation of “Into the Woods Junior” with permission through Musical Theater International. With a cast of twenty incredibly talented teenagers and director Tamara Jensen and music director Ryan Heimlich, the show is sure to be amazing. I was given the wonderful opportunity to assist Melisa Schultz with the choreography. Even from the very first rehearsal, it was clear that every cast member was so excited to be a part of this magical production. From Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf, to Rapunzel and Jack and the giants, this story is a collection of several fairy tales. One day, a baker and his wife are informed by the witch next door about a curse she placed on their family that makes them unable to have children.

She tells them that if they can collect four items in “three days time,” the curse will be reversed. Preparing for a play requires more effort than you may realize. Practices are held four days a week after school. Acting is more than memorizing lines, singing is more than using your voice, and dancing is more than counts to a beat—these students work extremely hard every day so they can be ready to put on the best show possible for their community. As I talked with some of the cast members, it was amazing to hear the different theater backgrounds each actor came from. Caleb Johnson, who plays the Baker, was inspired by his dad from a young age to pursue an interest in theater. Kendra Pittenger plays the Baker’s Wife, and she began theater by performing in plays through her church. Julia Nevers, who plays “naive” Little Red, has been dancing since she was two years old, which led her to discover a love for theater. Energized, ecstatic and exhilarating—that is how Caleb, Kendra, and Julia feel when they perform. Live theater is a broad spectrum of emotions and these feelings are no exception. Theater impacts every actor differently, and in my opinion, that is what makes it so captivating. DON’T MISS INTO THE WOODS, JR. APRIL 13–17, 7:30 PM AT THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS, 1475 EAST AVE., CHICO. TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED AT WWW.CHICOTIX.COM OR AT THE DOOR.

DISCOVERY SHOPPE BY KYLEEN BROMLEY

PHOTO OF DISCOVERY SHOPPE LEAGUE PRESIDENT RENA KOKE (LEFT) WITH FELLOW VOLUNTEER, LORETTA CARROLL (RIGHT)

Beneath the shade of a simple tulip tree at 315 Flume Street in downtown Chico sits a small shop with a history dating back to 1959. The most current location of The Discovery Shoppe League is where the old “Red House” was located so many years ago, that many may remember visiting as young children. The Discovery Shoppe first opened its doors in 1959 by a small group of women who were concerned about the need for services to help local families experiencing challenges. While names and locations may have changed throughout the years, The Discovery Shoppe has steadfastly maintained its vision and mission to the community. Specifically, the Discovery Shoppe is a local non-profit thrift store that accepts donations, sells the donated merchandise, and then distributes the proceeds to other non-profit organizations in Chico and surrounding areas. As explained by the volunteers, the success of the Discovery Shoppe is based on a myriad of factors. These factors include the generosity of the donors, the patronage of the customers, and the overall support of the community. The Shoppe is operated 100% by volunteers consisting of 120 women. All of these women, who have been sponsored by current members in order to be approved as volunteers, bring their own unique strengths, knowledge, and areas of expertise. They perform all types of tasks such as, accepting and handling donations with care, pricing items, displaying and selling the merchandise to customers. Other responsibilities involve marketing, community outreach, and overall duties to operate a successful business. Although none of The Shoppe members are paid, they are rewarded in many ways. They have the opportunity to become involved in determining which non-profit organizations should benefit from The Shoppe’s efforts. These volunteers are able to identify, recommend, and select appropriate and worthwhile non-profit programs that enhance the lives of numerous groups and individuals. As a result of their team approach, hard work, and the generous help of the community, The Discovery Shoppe has donated to over 100 nonprofits and is optimistic about the future. The ladies at The Shoppe take nothing for granted or lose focus of their purpose. In addition to providing funds to help other nonprofits, they also provide items that may be needed at elementary schools, shelters, and other programs. These ladies stick to their motto, “Passing forward to our community.” The rich history of The Discovery Shoppe and the wonderful volunteers make it possible for The Shoppe to give 100% of their proceeds to other non-profit organizations. After meeting the ladies of The Discovery Shoppe, it is easy to see why they wear their red aprons with pride. It is evident that The Shoppe will continue to be a positive asset to our community for many years to come. Stop by and say hello to the ladies at The Discovery Shoppe!

RETIREMENT REALITY Retiring is looking more distant then ever for most Americans. A recent report from Gobankingrates.com found that most Americans have next to nothing saved for retirement. In fact, 56% of people have less than $10,000 saved for retirement. These statistics confirm prior studies from the Federal Reserve which have similar findings. Many people rely on Social Security income alone, but the max benefit possible (for high earners) is only about $30,000 annually before tax. Having additional funds set aside can help with housing, dining, travel, entertainment and healthcare costs which are sure to come. Here are some ideas on ways to increase your retirement savings:

BY RENEE MICHEL, MBA AND JOE SWEENEY, CFP® FINANCIAL ADVISORS WITH ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP

PAY YOURSELF FIRST When writing the monthly checks for bills, treat your savings account as a bill to be paid. Most banks have websites and apps which makes transferring money into your savings account painless. Commit to saving a fixed amount weekly or monthly to get the ball rolling.

B- The automatic nature of the savings allows you to average into investments over time, buying more shares when they are lower and less when they are higher (dollar cost averaging). C- If your plan has an employer match, contribute enough to at least get the full amount. That’s free money for retirement.

UTILIZE YOUR COMPANY 401(K) AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE Employer retirement plans are an important part of building a nest egg: A- Enrolling is easy. Employees elect a percentage of their salary, and that money gets swept into an investment account every payday. The money is pre-tax, meaning you don’t pay federal or state income tax now on the balance you save.

DECADES & SOUND WAVES BY MATTHEW MANFREDI

If you consider yourself a Northern California resident, you probably have heard Ron Woodward’s voice. Since 1974 he has been making his mark on the FM frequencies in the North Valley. Creator and program director of Thunder 100.7, Chico’s Classic Rock radio station that consistently plays classics from bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and AC/DC, Woodward made the decision to bring rock radio to Chico back in 1974, because at one time there was no such thing in our area. Music has always been a part of Woodward’s life. Born in the Bay Area, he would hang around the local radio stations as a kid. After graduating from Chico State with a degree in mass communication, Woodward moved to Sonoma County for a few years, working at KSRO, owned by the Finley Media Corporation, which also owned the Press Democrat newspaper in the surrounding area. The vision of starting a rock radio station had always been an idea that Woodward shared with his college roommate Jeff Kragel. “There were no rock stations in Chico back in the day,” Woodward said. “Zero.” Woodward and Kragel made the decision to buy a religious station and transform it into KFM. This was in 1974 and the beginning of what would be his long career in radio. “It was the glory days of radio. We put together radio shows, always live and local, keeping our listeners plugged into what was going on in our town. If people wanted to know what was going on locally, we gave it to them. This was long before the internet, and the rest of today’s technology.” Woodward said. “We were playing the music that everybody was into.” KFM was now Chico’s home of rock ‘n’ roll. This was only the beginning. After a few years, Woodward had become involved in creating radio stations all over Chico. He created KMXI, The Mix at 95.1 and The Blaze at 103.5. Including country, he has a love for all music. But classic rock is his first love. “I love the bands that have stood the test of time— Zeppelin, The Stones, and so many more,” Woodward says. Woodward says his favorite part of being on the radio is playing someone’s favorite song so they can sing along, tap their foot, keep plugged into what’s going on in our town, and put a smile on their face. He has 16

grown comfortable with the 10 to 12 hour work days over the years and his love for music is something you can hear every time he gets behind the microphone. Often asked about retirement, the thought hasn’t really occurred to him at this point in his career. His strong passion for the business is

the driving force. And this doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. “I’ve always just really loved music,” Woodward says.

NEUROKINETIC THERAPY, ANATOMY TRAINS AND DYSFUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS

We have all had that achy lower back, knee, shoulder or neck. Let’s take a minute to think about the bones and their structures as our hardware, with the muscles and their connective tissues as our software. When the software becomes compromised, due to injury or surgery, it can create dysfunction throughout the system. Something as simple as stubbing your left big toe can eventually result in right shoulder pain and dysfunction based on the functional patterns of what we’ve come to recognize as Anatomy Trains. What if I told you to stop thinking of skeletal muscles and their actions as individuals? The truth is, the body’s neurological recruitment of muscle actions is not so one-sided. The brain does not just say “Hey biceps, flex my elbow,” though that action may be the end result. Whatever they may be doing individually, muscles also influence functionally integrated bodywide continuities within the myofascial webbing (1). Realize that when the brain tells the muscle to complete a movement, it does not act alone. There are synergists, antagonists, functional opposites and these continuous webs of not only the muscles themselves but tendons, ligaments, and fascia. For example: The Superficial Back Line, as described in the Anatomy Trains book written by Thomas W. Myers, connects the frontal bone and cranial fascia to the erector spinae muscles and sacrolumbar fascia to the sacrotuberous ligament to the hamstrings to the gastrocnemius and Achilles tendon and ends at the plantar fascia and short toe flexors. In simpler terms, this anatomy train connects from head to toe. This is just one of the many 20

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G . C O M A PR I L 20 1 6

other fascial webbing lines that keep the body in proper movement function. How can we combat these patterns? Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) founded by David Weinstock may be that solution. NKT is a sophisticated assessment and treatment modality that allows practitioners to discover the causes of dysfunctional movement and coordination problems at their root in the motor control center in the cerebellum. The motor control center stores these patterns and completes their actions through the spinal cord to the muscles. Manual muscle testing is used as information to asses if a muscle will test inhibited, “weak,” or facilitated, “strong.” If a muscle tests as weak, the motor control center sees this as a “failure” and opens itself to reprogramming. This result allows for the NKT protocol of test-releaseretest to retrain the motor pattern in the cerebellum. Correcting these dysfunctional movement patterns is an essential component to rehabilitative therapy (2), helping you to get out of pain and restore proper movement! 1. Myers, Thomas W., Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual Movement Therapists. 2014. 2. Weinstock, David., Neurokinetic Therapy: An Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing. 2015.

It’s a Jungle Out There! How to Avoid the Downfalls. It’s Monday morning and after a warm, sunny couple of days off our office is packed with people and their aching bodies from attacking the yard over the weekend. Perhaps you decided to knock out the weeds, mow the lawns, trim the hedges, plant and reseed. You likely powered through a day or two of wrestling with your back yard jungle, and now you’re paying the price. I’m not going to go into a dissertation of explaining what you did and why you hurt, instead I’m going to go through a better way to avoid this cycle. Step One: Know your limitations. Work steadily for an hour and take a break. Stop bending over, stand up, arch your back and fold forward 4-5 times, drink a glass of water and then get back to work. Repeat this throughout your day. Avoided: Dehydration and dizziness from lack of fluids while working long hours and strained lower back or worse inflamed disc and acute severe back pain for the next 3-5 days. Step Two: Use your legs to squat instead of bending over at the waste and tensing the lower back. If you don’t have the flexibility to squat or have knee limitations, invest in a small stool and move it with you as you go through the garden or yard, pulling weeds, planting, etc. Avoided: Compromising lower back postural muscles (erector spinae), aggravating lumbar (lower back) discs (the sponges between two bones), and spasms in over used hamstrings and glute muscles. Step Three: Wear appropriate clothing and sun protection. It’s still cool enough outside to protect the legs and arms if you’re going to be cutting, mowing, trimming, climbing, etc. I see some nasty abrasions from weekend yard enthusiasts who really should take care of their skin to avoid sun damage and possible infections from dirty cuts. Skin is the body’s biggest organ and constant neglect will start to show over time. Avoided: Sunspots or melanoma, skin infections, deep cuts and possible stitches, scarring. HAPPY AND SAFE GARDENING!

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, can occur if you’ve experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a car accident, abuse, military combat or a violent crime. While feelings of worry or fear are common after a trauma, usually they diminish in time. Those who suffer from PTSD continue to have anxiety that can be re-experienced through nightmares, memories and flashbacks, explains Psychiatrist Dr. Scott Nichols, medical director for Enloe Behavioral Health. As a result, PTSD can lead to problems in relationships, careers and daily life. The good news is that PTSD can be treated. What are the symptoms? PTSD symptoms vary and can appear immediately after the trauma, or weeks, months or even years later. PTSD has been linked to other mental illnesses and can occur with depression, be disabling and may lead to depression, or in extreme cases, may result in suicide, says Dr. Nichols. Symptoms may include: 1. Flashbacks, sleep disturbances or nightmares 2. Fear, anxiety, and painful emotions 3. Inability to focus or make decisions

4. Feeling depressed, agitated, or resentful 5. Feeling emotionally numb, withdrawn, or avoiding close relationships How is PTSD treated? Treatment for PTSD must be determined by a physician or mental health professional. Seeking treatment takes courage and shows that you are

taking control of your life and future. “Counseling is a main treatment for PTSD; a trained professional can help you change the way you think and respond to triggers and life stressors,” says Dr. Nichols. “Exposure therapy can also help people face and control their reactions to traumatic memories.” Medication may be prescribed to help with sleep, depression anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares. For individuals unable to cope with daily life, Enloe Behavioral Health offers inpatient care. Complimentary assessments are available. For information, call (530) 332-5250 or (800) 560-5900, or visit www.enloe.org/wellness. Where do I start? It’s important to seek professional help if severe symptoms do not diminish within several weeks after a trauma. Make an appointment with a psychiatrist to discuss or confirm your diagnosis. Employee assistance programs, police departments, physicians, and crisis hotlines can recommend professionals. Maintain good health through nutrition, exercise, and enough sleep. It’s important to note that alcohol, benzodiazepines (Xanax and Valium), and other sedatives have been found to make PTSD worse over time. While getting professional help, remember to spend time with people you trust and enjoy. This can help avoid isolation and provide support and a sense of meaning to your life.

BEAUTY Q&A A D U LT A C N E

It is rare that someone will escape the acne experience. It does not discriminate between men or women, teens or adults. There are many contributing factors to acne, the most significant being the hormone testosterone. However, adult acne differs from teen acne, and understanding how can help you to determine the best course of action for you.

probably noticed that your skin is dry enough on its own. As our skin matures, we experience certain hormonal changes that contribute to a lack of the essential moisture that gives us that supple, youthful look that we had in our 20’s and early 30’s. Instead, acne treatment products are primarily marketed towards teens, and leave adults with sallow and dull looking skin in addition to acne.

What are some contributing factors to acne?

How can I treat adult acne?

First, what is acne? Acne is a disorder of keratinization, which is the development of cells lining the sebaceous (oil) glands. A process called desquamation, the body’s natural ability to exfoliate dead skin cells is slowed, and those same cells then bind together with oil plugging the gland. The gland continues to secrete sebum triggered by testosterone, and with a lack of oxygen creates the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. This causes painful inflammation within the gland which results in pimples, pustules, and cyst-like lesions. How does teen acne differ from adult acne? If you’re one of the millions of people who has adult onset acne, you have probably noticed that it appears in different areas of your face than it did in your teens. Teens experience acne in the “T-Zone,” or center of the face. Adults typically have activity on the chin and sides of the face. Commercially available products are designed to dry out acne, and unfortunately these products dry out the rest of your skin as well. If you’re an adult in your mid-30’s or older, you have 24

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G . C O M A PR I L 20 1 6

With adult acne, the goal is to treat the breakouts while keeping the skin healthy and moisturized. I treat adult acne according to the individual complexities of the skin’s situation. I use Lactic acid, which is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid that works by dissolving the “glue” that bridges the cells together, and by increasing the glycosaminoglycans that are responsible for keeping the skin moisturized. Lactic acid also provides a deeper exfoliation that allows the skin to further absorb necessary bacteria fighting products. I also combine my customized acne treatments with one of the most effective acne agents, called salicylic acid. This beta hydroxy acid helps dissolves dead skin cells and is lipid soluble (ability to penetrate oil), making it very effective in treating acne. Salicylic acid is unique in that it also has a calming effect on the skin and can work as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Get your

FILL! What are dermal fillers and what can they do for you? When we are young, our faces have smooth, plump contours; cheeks are round and full, and no “laugh lines” have formed around our mouths. The aging process depletes bone mass and flattens out our collagen cells, and our bodies don’t compensate for that. Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Voluma are made from Hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our skin. Since it is not a “foreign substance,” it can’t be rejected, and is eventually re-absorbed into the body. The product is injected sub-dermally, to re-contour the youthful shape we once had. The lips can also lose their fullness, and Juvederm can be injected there to regain our “pout.” Here at the Derm Bar, we use microcanullas (thin, flexible hollow tubes with a smooth, rounded tip) which allow for fewer needle sticks and less pain for the client during injection. Juvederm is used for “parenthesis” lines around the mouth and nose, in the lip area, and the lower face. Voluma has a higher expansion level and is used for the cheek area to contour and subtly lift the surrounding tissue. Down time is minimal, although bruising is a possibility with any kind of injection. Given the price of a surgical face lift and the down time required, injectable fillers are gaining in popularity because of their fast and noninvasive nature! Putting the Chill on

PHOTOS BY FRANK REBELO

When Jeff Jukkola bought his home in 2004, he had no intention whatsoever of remaining there for the next 12 years. Centrally located and built in 1956, the home seemed like the perfect fixer-upper flip, but when the real estate market crashed soon after its purchase, Jeff found that the purchase made more sense as his own private residence than taking a loss on the investment. He decided to take on the project of fixing up the home himself while living in it. As the years went by, core items in the home began to wear out and break down, as appliances often do. His energy bills spiked and he started looking for the reason. As an engineer for PG&E himself, he was acutely aware of the potential causes for the dramatic change in energy use, but without experience in efficiency testing, he had no way to discern which of the potential causes was in fact at fault. In 2014, the home’s HVAC unit began its slow march toward the grave, and after living through one of Chico’s sweltering summers without AC, Jeff decided it was finally time to seek outside help. David Green of igreen was completing an energy audit and efficiency upgrade just down the street from Jeff in June of 2015. Reminded of the prior summer’s discomfort by rising temperatures, Jeff called the number on David’s yard sign and requested a home energy test. David stopped by, performed the test, and found that the home had a number of issues throughout the attic that were causing the energy spike. Between the extremely poor insulation, leaking ducts, and lack of air sealing, it was no surprise that the HVAC unit died as early as it did—it was constantly working in overdrive to make up for the air that

Your Energy Bill

was quickly escaping the home and delivering air through longer-than-needed stretches of ducting. David put a plan together and presented Jeff with a proposed energy upgrade. Jeff accepted the plan and they set out to revive the home. David replaced the HVAC unit with an ultra-efficient ducted mini-split system which saw instant efficiency gains, as it didn’t require long runs of ducting to deliver air throughout the home. In fact, the units sat right above the vents with very little ducting at all. He vacuumed out what little insulation the home originally had and replaced it with 14 inches of R49 insulation, keeping the conditioned air where it needed to be. Finally, he ran a test

to find where air from the living space below was escaping into the attic above. He found a number of air holes and sealed them to prevent the leakage. The changes, based on calculations, should make the home 24.3% more efficient than it previously was, meaning big energy savings for Jeff both in the short and long term. Jeff didn’t just hire David because he saw his yard sign though. As a PG&E employee, he was aware of a number of rebates that PG&E offered through a program called Energy Upgrade California and was looking to hire someone with the same focus on sustainability that he had. The program allows contractors like David, a LEED certified contractor and PG&E energy partner, to make modifications to the home and submit them for potentially huge rebates. In Jeff’s case, PG&E approved his energy upgrade for $5,500 in rebates, making the upgrade even more of a no-brainer. Upgraded and super energy-efficient, Jeff’s home is finally ready to take on Chico’s summer heat and for a small fraction of the cost of homes just like his. If you’re looking to save money on your PG&E bill or have a home that could use an energy upgrade, call igreen today and set up an energy audit appointment. After all, there are far better things to spend your money on during the summer than wasted energy.

The Pyramid to Healthy Food BY ALYSSA WORLEY

PHOTOS BY MICHELLE CAMY PHOTO OF MATTHEW MARTIN OWNER OF PRYAMID FARMS

On the average rainy day, everything seems gray and blurred. However, on this particular day, as we drove down the hill to Pyramid Farm, everything appeared sharp and green and alive. At first glance, it may seem to be just well tended rows of a family garden but with a closer look, Pyramid Farm contains 11 acres of homegrown vegetables of all varieties. Matthew Martin has been working the lush California soil on this farm right on the outskirts of Chico for the last 18 years. As a self taught farmer, his love for growing good food for good people started as a “hobby gone wild.” What started as a small backyard garden has grown into a full time career. Through trial and error, “I try not to make the same mistake twice,” Matthew has been providing nourishing food for the community for many years. Pyramid Farm cultivates mixed vegetables of all kinds, but is most widely known for their carrots. The strong relationship they have with their farmers market customers, wholesale buyers, and restaurants are what keep this small plot sustained. They need every single supporter to make it work and to retain the farm’s success. “It’s not easy and we have some of the best farmland in the world.” Certified organic, this health and community conscious farm hopes to continue to keep business flourishing while also beginning new projects. Providing fresh cut flowers for events and hosting affordable, rustic weddings on site are the two latest ventures for Pyramid. With a bathroom, outdoor kitchen area, and one of the best wedding backdrops nature can provide, the farm is an ideal place for those looking for an affordable venue. Be it a large farm dinner or ceremony, the ordinary idea of a farm setting is skewed by the refreshing view of dew dropped fields. Lush green rows, the open sky changing color from day to dusk, and the call of happy birds surround Pyramid Farm. It has become an oasis for Matthew and his wife Lisa, who spend their days tending to the animals, flowers and produce. Before the land was plotted to grow the amount of food it does today, the original farm was in the shape of a pyramid. Vegetables are one of the larger sections in the food pyramid, which we believe to be an omen that growth will continue for Pyramid Farm. Matthew Martin wants to tell his fellow vegetable lovers that by eating local they are helping resident farms to stay in business. “We couldn’t do it without them,” he says. And we couldn’t consume some of the best hand grown and picked vegetables in the area without Pyramid!

There’s no place like:

HomeStreet Bank You’ve undoubtedly seen their photos in our magazine and their billboards floating high above town. You’ve noticed them because the women of HomeStreet Bank in Chico are consistent, and it isn’t just by happenstance either—the company they work for has built their reputation on it. Since opening their doors in Seattle, Washington nearly one hundred years ago, HomeStreet Bank has prided itself in consistently proving that customer service is its number-one priority. It’s no surprise then, that with over 118 years of combined experience in customer-focused lending and banking, that the women of HomeStreet Bank in Chico decided to make this their home. In September of 2015, Allison Denney, Janet “JP” Clark, Lynnette Baker, Shelly Anderson, Shirley Amende, Toni Cooper, and Danette Moloney came together to open HomeStreet Bank in Chico. The 29th branch of HomeStreet Bank in California, the Chico location was opened just three short years after the company began its expansion into California from the Pacific Northwest. With branches throughout Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, the company is quickly staking its claim on lending in the western United States. As the oldest and longest standing relationship with the Federal National Mortgage Association, often referred to as Fannie Mae, HomeStreet Bank has the unique opportunity to pilot programs for the institution aimed at opening lending to a larger base of borrowers. The relationship fits in perfectly with the company’s core mission as well, to find a way for good borrowers to land the loan needed to make their dreams a reality. Each of the women in the Chico branch embody that same mission, and work tirelessly to provide that level of service. Perhaps most importantly, what happens at HomeStreet Bank in Chico, stays at HomeStreet Bank in Chico. When a loan is started here, it stays here through the entire process. The loan is never sold off, and the lending agent never loses touch with her client. Loans are processed onsite and the servicing of the loan from start to finish remains at the Chico branch. Better yet, should there be any questions, borrowers can call their agent at the Chico branch directly; there’s never a need to speak with someone on the end of a 1-800 number they’ve never met. It isn’t just the customer service that’s great here, it’s also the access to loan programs that most won’t find elsewhere, like their one-step builder loan that locks in an interest rate for 360 days. By doing so, the borrower is able to buy their land and build their dream home over an entire year with the same interest rate and just one loan, saving the borrower considerable time and money in the long run. Lending programs like these all but disappeared with the mortgage meltdown ten years ago. Though these programs are wonderful opportunities, it’s important to work with someone who is experienced and has the knowledge to help. Between new guidelines and stricter timeframes imposed by the government, knowing the insand-outs of the industry is a must, and the branch in Chico delivers, as no one here is new to the lending industry. With a clear focus on residential home loans, combined with the education and experience necessary to get things done, the women at HomeStreet Bank are poised to make their mark on the Chico lending community and local real estate as a whole. Visit them during their grand opening celebration at their new location, 2760 Esplanade #130, in Chico on April 28th from 4–7 p.m. We’ll look forward to seeing all of you there! Education & Community BY MATTHEW MANFREDI

If you look closely, small hints and traces of the Humboldt Wagon Road can be found all over Upper Bidwell Park—subtle pieces of Butte County history. Established at the south end of Downtown Chico in 1864, the narrow route would eventually stretch to the east, over the vast Lassen National Forest, to Susanville. Used to access gold and silver mines in Idaho and Nevada; the road was a vision made possible by John Bidwell himself. Consequently, as the road opened, the stretch of land would be traveled and explored and towns began to emerge along the way. With these towns, schools, post offices, and general stores began to appear in these small communities. Forest Ranch was one of these towns beginning to develop along the Humboldt Wagon Road. In 1878, a petition for a school to be built was put together by members of the community. Quickly, John Henry Shuffleton, a Forest Ranch resident, sold property at a fair price and the first Forest Ranch School would soon be constructed. The student body would consist of 10–20 students. As I sit in the office of the Forest Ranch Charter School, outside, winter is still very much in character, but the sun reaches out to Cedar Creek Road where the school is located. Before the current location, there had been several schools found all around Forest Ranch—five in total since the first was constructed in 1878. For unknown reasons, the first Forest Ranch School burned down sometime between 1900–01. This is something that would happen more often than expected. Luckily, the materials and school supplies were recovered and moved to a cabin located near the town store. Fortunately, school was resumed within the next week. With Forest Ranch residents and contractors working and building and striving for another schoolhouse to be built, success came within the next year very close to the foundation of the first schoolhouse. With a student body reaching to as much as 30 students, within another year, as history repeats itself, a fire would claim the building and the school was once again moved to the same cabin, a placeholder for the second time. “Harry Shuffleton was the one who continued to rebuild and provide the ground for the school,” said Dave Nopel, local Butte County historian and author.

A few years later, a third building was constructed, lasting for a few decades, again, perishing in a fire in 1933. Because of school census and the trouble of commuting to Chico for classes, in 1964, Chico Unified School District to the initiative to build a one-room schoolhouse for the growing population of Forest Ranch. The fourth building, still standing today, currently functions as the Forest Ranch Community Center. Again, Shuffleton secured the property for the building, making construction a possibility for the new schoolhouse where classes remained in session until 1992. “When I started that very first year, I taught kindergarten and first grade. We had a total of 33 students,” says Lynne Wright, former teacher of Forest Ranch Elementary School. Wright was the third member of the teaching faculty starting in 1972. She would continue until 1992 when the school was moved to its current location on Cedar Creek Road. “We closed the school down on a Friday and moved everything that weekend,” she said. School resumed on that following Monday.” The rich and unique history doesn’t stop there. In the summer of 2008, the school made the decision to begin the transition to fulfill the requirements toward becoming a public charter school. Within only a few weeks these requirements were met and the school was became known as Forest Ranch Charter School, marking 130 years of a school standing in the small community. Over 50 students from Chico enjoy the ride up Highway 32 with the free transportation system provided by the school, collectively adding to the student body of 140. To this day, the 15-acre campus featuring grades K-8 genuinely shows how education has prevailed through the past and present. The history, the tradition, and integrity are still very apparent in the halls of the modern facility. “The feel of the school is still just as warm and friendly as it did when it was a one room school house,” Wright said. Hudson’s for your Home Jim Clarkson moved to Paradise in 1984 with nothing but a rake in his hands and the dream to start a new life. Originally from Oakland, Jim was no stranger to hard work; he took his rake and began offering yard services to the people around town, eventually finding his way to the local baptist church. It was here that he met Arlan Hudson, maintenance chairperson at the church and one of our very own local legends. Arlan was a bit of an entrepreneur himself, he began his own appliance business out of his garage and eventually opened Hudson’s Appliance Center in 1964 on Pearson Road in Paradise. Recognizing Jim’s work ethic, he hired him at the church to take over its maintenance. It wasn’t long before his hard work not only earned him Arlan’s trust, but also a referral to Weldon Bauman, who had purchased Arlan’s appliance store in 1980. Based on Arlan’s referral, Weldon hired Jim as the new delivery person for the store. As Jim spent more time behind the wheel, he began to realize that there were a number of areas where the store could grow and provide more to its customers. The most important of these areas, in his mind, was on the end of servicing the appliances they sold to their customers. He approached Weldon and asked for the time to learn how to do this himself. Weldon appreciated his forward thinking, granted him the time, and Jim was soon ready to begin providing repair services for the company’s clientele. He opened the store’s service center and continued working with the Baumans for 22 years before buying the business from them in February of 2006. In 2014, Jim’s son, Vince, returned from the Marine Corps. A helicopter door gunner, Vince spent ten years in the military and by the end of his service was intent on being home every night and closer to his wife, Kristina, and two kids. Excited for his son’s return, Jim offered Vince

and Kristina jobs at the store and a partnership in the family business. The offer allowed Vince to do exactly what he had hoped for, and the two accepted. Over the past two years, the store has grown considerably. As the exclusive local retailer in Paradise for Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kitchenaid, Hudson’s Appliance Center not only sells some of the best refrigerators, washers & dryers, ovens, and dishwashers around, but they service them as well! With nine knowledgeable employees who know just about all there is to know when it comes to appliances, the company is well equipped to handle any job and they’re able to provide same-day service the majority of the time. Most recently, Vince and Kristina have launched a new campaign where Hudson’s will price match any northern California competitor, big box or small. The move guarantees that large appliance shoppers will never again have to choose between big store pricing and the kind of service only found at small, specialty retailers. The company’s 3,000 square foot warehouse is also stocked full of appliances, making purchasing a breeze. Better yet, if the item you’re looking for isn’t in stock, it’s only a few days away, as they receive shipments at least once each week. And yes, being owned and operated by a military veteran, military discounts are available as well. If you’re in the market for new appliances, visit Hudson’s Appliance Center in Paradise. With a vast selection to choose from and local service for the life of your purchase, you can skip those dreaded 1-800 numbers and rest easy knowing that you’ll be taken care of by a local family that has been in the industry for over 25 years. Better yet, you’ll know you are supporting a veteran and his family who have served our country for a decade, and can expect the same level of trustworthiness, devotion, and dedication that made him such a valuable member of our country’s armed services. “Sherry Landis was not just an agent, for us, from the first conversation I had with her on the phone, I felt she understood my needs. I felt more of a human connection with her than anything and could tell she genuinely cared. She understood me, and not only that, but she actually knew what needed to be done to sell my home. This agent was concerned with doing the right job and she never neglected us. She’s very loyal, honest, and full of integrity! I believe that she cares about doing a good job, but I felt that to her this is not just a job. She cares very much about her clients and others, and wants to help them sincerely. It’s because of this human approach that Sherry Landis is not only a top real estate agent, but a very honorable, kind, and REAL Christian (it’s our actions that show who we are not words), and everything she’s done from beginning to end has proved who she is. Her performance was more than excellent!“ -Arusyak Kirpichyan

POWER TOOL

PHOTO OF DOUG GILLIS OWNER OF SKYWAY TOOLS

Doug Gillis met Sherry in 1989, three short years after opening Skyway Tools in Chico. Doug asked her out on their first date but, as the store’s sole proprietor, had to delay their date to take care of store billing and finish pricing tools. Sherry was in no mood for the delay and was looking forward to her date with Doug, so she offered to do the billing while he priced the tools. She never left the business. The two were soon married and she took over the store’s operations. In 1995, the two launched skywaytools. com and began selling tools internationally. The business began booming and the two decided to stop renting. They bought their current property at the corner of Bruce Road and Skyway in 2006 and built their new store. The store continued to do well for the next few years but got hit hard by the recession. They began questioning if they would be able to keep the store open but, instead of panicking, they put a ten year strategy in place. They began buying up used metal barrels, plastic buckets, and other barrels both large and small. They cleaned them, and recycled them in the store, selling the used barrels to ecoconscious and price-conscious shoppers alike. The move saved their business, and now makes up 40% of their entire revenue. Although they had survived the recession, the cost of doing business continued to increase and their energy bill was no different. At nearly $15,000 per year, the exorbitant expense of keeping the lights on was taking a major piece out of their bottom line. They were able to refinance their building in 2015 and decided to use the money to move to solar power. They had been given a number of quotes by solar salespeople who continued to stop into their business, but after reviewing the quotes, found that buying local with Sean at Urban Design Solar was hands down the best value at the lowest price. The solar salespeople even came out to rebid the project, but were still far over Urban Design Solar’s first bid. Doug and Sherry admired Sean’s knowledge of the industry and the level of service he provided throughout the process; they also found that Urban Design Solar had excellent references, a great portfolio of previous projects, and outstanding reviews on Yelp! They accepted their proposal and in just three short weeks their new solar installation was complete. One of the most important aspects to any large purchase is whether or not it makes financial sense. In the case of Skyway Tools, it made perfect sense. From an average monthly PG&E bill of $1,250, the new solar array, installed by Urban Design Solar, quickly dropped their PG&E bill to just $12. With loan payments on their new solar array sitting at approximately half of their old energy bill, they are looking to rapidly pay off their system in just under five years. After the fifth year, Doug and Sherry can expect to save at least $15,000

each year for the life of their system, a wise a different rate structure. In February alone, investment indeed. By choosing Urban Design applications for solar installations amounted Solar as their solar contractor, Doug and Sherry to 59.88MW of solar. Should installations saved $20,000 from the next closest bid. To say continue at that pace, the NEM cap will be that they were satisfied with the experience is reached in 8 short months at which point, new an understatement. solar customers will lose out on the many The two made the decision to move to benefits currently available. solar power at just the right time. With PG&E Solar powered and ready to take on rates on the rise and incentives like tax rebates the next ten years, Skyway Tools is perfectly quickly disappearing, the sooner businesses positioned to continue doing what it does best move to solar, the better. According to SFGate. — sell tools, services, and provide education to com, small businesses should expect a 5.1% our community. Whether you’re looking for air, increase in energy bills this year; for Doug hand, or power tools (especially those made and Sherry’s small business, this would have in America), drill bits, channel locks, recycled amounted to an additional $765 in expenses in house paint, barrels, or just about anything 2016 alone. To add to it, at the time of writing else in the tool world, Skyway Tools has you this article, PG&E only has 492.50 MW of solar covered. If you’re looking to save money on energy allotment remaining before its Net your PG&E bill, take their advice and make sure Energy Metering (NEM) cap is reached. Once to call Urban Design Solar. this cap is reached, a new set of guidelines will be implemented, changing the structure and pricing landscape for solar energy in California. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT 2260 PARK The new NEM will introduce additional fees and AVE. M–F 8 AM–5 PM OR CALL 530.345.0005 45

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED: •

Vintage teacups

Wax flakes (we used soy)

Wicks

Wick adhesive

Microwave safe container or double boiler

Food coloring and scented oil (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Wash and dry your teacups thoroughly. 2. Using the wax adhesive, place wicks in the center of each cup. 3. Heat the wax flakes in the microwave or double boiler until completely melted. We used about 16 ounces, but the amount will depend on the size of your teacups.

4. Stir the wax to ensure that there are no unmelted flakes and microwave a bit longer if needed. 5. Add any desired scents or coloring and stir again. 6. Pour the melted wax into each teacup, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top. 7. Allow the wax to cool and harden. This will take 3-4 hours. 8. Trim the wicks to your desired height. 9. Enjoy!

HOUSE CALL:

SAYING “NOPE” TO TAUPE

Bedrosian mosaic title backsplash

A San Francisco native from the Mission District, Katherine Sears lived in the Bay Area until early 2000 when she moved to Paradise to be closer to her son. The home she purchased when she arrived was in the right location and only one month old, but had clearly been built to someone else’s taste. For starters, nearly the entire home was painted taupe, her least favorite color. The kitchen counters were made of brown tile and dark brown grout, with a half-wall tile backsplash in the same color. Above and below the counters were white cabinets, and the kitchen was—you guessed it—painted taupe. When her son moved to Maryland with his family, she took the opportunity to rent the house and move back to San Francisco. A few years passed and Katherine’s son and grandchildren returned to Paradise.

U P G R A D E D L I V I N G . C O M A PR I L 20 1 6

She decided it was time to do the same. Upon returning in 2012, she found that her renter had completely changed her home and the movers had done some damage in the process as well. Rather than stew about it, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to renovate the home and finally make it what she had always wanted. She added a new deck, replaced the windows and their screens, had local painter, Curtis Clark, repaint the home, and last, she decided to refresh the kitchen.

THE CALL Katherine reached out to her friend, Mindy, who lived across the street and was in the process of remodeling her kitchen. Mindy was using New Again Kitchen Remodeling for her project and was delighted to recommend them with the highest of praise. Katherine called the showroom and

Golden dream granite counterops

spoke to Sean about her project and he invited her in for a consultation. When Katherine arrived with her son and daughter-in-law, she found the showroom to be incredibly clean with a wide variety of options available for her home. They were greeted by Ric, as Sean had been called away on the delivery of his baby. Ric assisted Katherine and her kids in selecting the right granite and backsplash for her kitchen based on her white cabinets and the new color palette she had selected for her home. They scheduled a time for the install and Katherine returned home to await her new kitchen.

THE CURE Katherine was pleasantly surprised to find that the store owner, Jin, showed up to help with the installation of her new CONNECT

kitchen. It wasn’t an anomaly either, as he makes every effort to work on each job site to ensure the attention to detail that New Again has become known for is maintained. Jin and his team removed the dated brown tile countertops and replaced them with golden dream granite slabs while finishing the window sill in the same granite to tie the two together. They removed the old worn sink and replaced it with a new Dawn USA stainless steel sink, as well as installed all of the new necessary plumbing and fixtures for her appliances. Finally, Victor Cabrera brought the room together by bridging the gap between the counters and cabinets with an espresso-colored Bedrosian mosaic tile backsplash. The difference was night and day.

been doing. I brought my gardener in the other day as he hadn’t seen the kitchen yet, and his eyes went wide at how different it looked. I am so happy with this kitchen; if I could take it with me the next time I move, I would! Go to New Again Kitchen Remodeling, talk to the guys, and check out what they have to offer. They do excellent work! The guys are super friendly, they finish their work quickly, and I couldn’t be happier with them.” Visit New Again Kitchen Remodeling or give them a call and see what so many customers, like Katherine Sears, are raving about.

When asked how she feels about her new kitchen, Katherine replies, “I am so pleased. I will absolutely continue to recommend New Again to my friends as I’ve already

I’M IN A RELATIONSHIP… BY DAN BOSCH

Times have changed… The amount of information available to us now is staggering and there is no place that this is more apparent than in the arena of real estate. When it comes to the way in which people are now obtaining their real estate information, and ultimately making their buying and selling decisions, the variety of resources is truly immense. All of this information brings with it not only new options, but new challenges as well… One of those becoming most evident to me is that of Agent selection and loyalty. In fact, in many cases I have spoken with people who cannot recall how they connected with the Realtor that they are working with, the Agent’s name and company, or even what the particular person is doing to assist in the process. Helplessness and confusion abounds and is adding to the complication and stress of the process for buyers and sellers alike. The online sites definitely do not help matters. In their rush to provide the public with every possible bit of information about available listings, neighborhood values and emerging trends, they often are randomly connecting people to agents that they don’t even intend to contact. Adding to the confusion is the fact that many times the Agents themselves do not know what property the person is even contacting them about. Listings for sale are confused with those for rent on many sites and in addition, much of what people are finding is simply outdated information. Homes that have long-since sold are showing as active listings and incomplete data on other properties causes further frustration. Now, I am not advising against using many of the resources available for informative and educational purposes throughout the process. The point that I am attempting to convey is that at the heart of the matter is a relationship…

Unfortunately, few people place as much emphasis on finding the right Agent as they do in finding the right property, or having the right advertising for their home. The person in whom you put your trust when it comes to buying or selling real estate needs to be chosen with care, not accidentally stumbled upon. You should not leave your success up to a real estate site’s algorithm or assume that the first person you speak with is your only option. Finding someone to assist in what is potentially one’s largest financial decision should not be left up to a chance encounter… Instead, I encourage you spend time, conduct research, look at reviews, and talk to friends and family to get their recommendations…. At the end of the day, whether you are buying or selling, I firmly believe that there is no more important precursor to success than the choice you make as to who will represent you. And while choosing your agent is extremely important, the work does not end there. All of the information, distraction and noise bombarding buyers and sellers is further heightened by another challenge that is coming to the forefront in our industry... There is a tremendous swelling in the ranks of Realtors throughout the country. This is happening at the same time that more and more resources to “find” someone are emerging every day. If during the process you continue to look around online, visit open houses and ask opinions of others, your business will no doubt be solicited by many. If you have made your decision on who you wish to work with, do not wander astray. No matter how you have connected with and chosen your agent, remain loyal and do not be afraid to tell people that you are in a relationship.

the Fantasy 5k Fun Run Many of us would agree that Caper Acres is one of Chico’s most treasured icons. Its whimsical features have been igniting the creative imaginations of young minds since 1970. After decades of running, jumping, climbing, and games of make believe, our beloved park’s age is evident, and renovations are a must. Of course, with big projects like this come big price tags. The $3.1 million dollar renovation project will have to be completed in phases, and some of the work has already begun. The City of Chico Parks Division has been eagerly working to raise the necessary funds—last year they were able to reach their $25,000 goal through the annual Annie B’s Community Drive, and continue to work with North Valley Community Foundation on fundraising efforts. While the renovations will bring the park into the 21st century and address safety and functional concerns, much of the original, iconic features will be kept intact. Major renovations will include updated fencing and lighting, the addition of fun and educational elements, restroom remodels, and layout improvements. If Caper Acres is near and dear to your heart, you won’t want to miss out on this upcoming opportunity to contribute to revitalization efforts. On Saturday, May 14th, the Chico Parks Division is hosting a Fantasy 5K Fun Run at Sycamore Field in Bidwell Park. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Caper Acres renovation project. Come dressed as your favorite fairytale character and enjoy some fresh air, exercise, and fun for the whole family. The kids will be sure to enjoy this magical event! Don’t miss this chance to take a little break from reality for a very worthy cause. All ages are welcome to walk or run either a one mile or 5K loop. Refreshments, informational booths, and even massages will be available to participants. Dress to impress and help preserve Caper Acres for generations to come! TO REGISTER FOR THE RACE, VISIT WWW.RACEPLANNER.COM. PREREGISTRATION ENDS APRIL 30TH. CHECK IN BEGINS AT 7:30 AM, RACE BEGINS AT 8:00 AM. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT THE CITY OF CHICO PARKS DIVISION AT (530) 896-7800 OR PARKINFO@CHICOCA.GOV. AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE FUTURE CAPER ACRES BY MELTON DESIGN GROUP OF CHICO.
