FROM THE EDITOR
Although I’ve been with Upgraded Living for nearly four years now, it never ceases to amaze me that we can put together an entire magazine in just a few (very short) weeks. But then, I think about all of the wonderful people that help make this happen, and it doesn’t seem so impossible. We are fortunate to have a network of caring and dedicated individuals who take time out of their busy schedules each month to share their stories, their passions, and their ideas. This magazine is a truly collaborative effort, and we are proud to be able to combine the talents of so many into one publication and share it with all of you. This time of year we’re reminded to take a moment to give thanks for all that we have, and I have to say, what we have is pretty great. Thank you to all of our dedicated readers, contributors, advertisers, and staff members—we love you more than pumpkin pie! It’s also that time of the year when the colder weather has finally come to stay for a bit. This month we bring you the season’s newest styles from our local clothing retailers—all of which are sure to keep you feeling cozy and looking great. One of my favorite ways to welcome a new season is with a fun new addition to my wardrobe, and with so many fantastic clothiers in our area there is no shortage of options for refreshing your look any time of year. With each new season comes new opportunity—opportunity to reinvent yourself, to collaborate with others, to rediscover your appreciation for the people and things that surround you. We hope that this beautiful November inspires you to do all of that and much more.

INJECTING CONFIDENCE The application of products into the skin for the purpose of beautification has been around for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians associated beauty with holiness and the process of beatification took on an almost magical role. In some cultures, naturally occurring products such as minerals, salts, and honey were applied to produce a smoother and more even skin tone. Over time, the complexity and nuances of such mixtures evolved into even more useful and sophisticated formulations to assist patrons in their quest to look younger and feel more vibrant. Over the last several decades the technology has advanced even more rapidly and physicians can now inject, directly, naturally occurring and therapeutic products into the skin to more substantially produce youthful and radiant skin. These “injectables,” have a wide variety of cosmetic and medical uses. Mostly they are used to restore volume to the cheeks and lips and to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. In fact, lip injections have been steadily gaining popularity over the past few years, and for good reason: they’re quick, relatively painless, affordable, and provide an instant youthful look to one’s face. But, ah, the dreaded “duck lips”—everyone wants fuller lips, but at what cost? Although the benefits are plentiful, lip injections have garnered a reputation for leaving a fair share of patients with unnaturally shaped, or overinjected lips. Newer and finely developed products, however, are making duck lips a thing of the past. Considerable progress has been made in the past few years and injectables have come a long way since their early uses. Augmentation of the cheeks for example, to restore a woman’s more youthful heart-shaped face, can reestablish beautiful and natural looking cheeks. Products like Juvéderm’s Voluma (for cheek enhancement), and Volbella (for gentle enhancement of the lips), have led the charge in making these benefits available with far less downtime and swelling than in the past. They utilize hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecular sugar in the body, to provide the desired firmness and volume to the area of injection. After years of providing patients access to Juvéderm, and as an educator, consultant, and highly rated physician for its parent company Allergan, Dr. Hodari of Rejuvené and North Valley Dermatology was selected
by the manufacturer to receive their newest injectable, Juvéderm Volbella XC, before it is available to other physicians. Juvéderm Volbella has a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA) than its predecessors, while still providing the long-lasting results patients have come to expect from the Juvéderm collection of fillers. Due to the lower concentration of HA, Volbella is delivered as a soft, smooth gel that adds subtle volume to the lips and softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. As a soft gel with lidocaine, results have a softer, more natural feel and can be delivered nearly-pain free. The lower concentration of HA and use of an ultra-fine needle for delivery also reduces swelling and recovery time. A recent study has shown that 98% of people who received Volbella reported that their lip appearance goals had been achieved, with results lasting up to 12 months. Dr. Hodari has been providing his patients access to the Juvéderm family of products for years, and more recently Juvéderm Volbella, ahead of its public release in the middle of October. The results from both, as displayed in the before and after photos, are subtle but clearly transformational.

COOL KID: Falling leaves. Apple cider. Long sleeves. Lively fires. These four things represent the epitome of autumn. Eighth grader Brad Debord has created his own candle business, Butte Creek Candles. “Every small child wants stuff,” he states. “And we only have two options in life: work for someone or work for yourself.” Brad has chosen the latter. He came up with the idea to start his own candle making business two years ago. One night, he couldn’t fall asleep, and as he was sitting in his living room, he observed the variety of candles around the room. Immediately, Brad quickly typed up a document about candles and starting a candle business. He emailed the document with his ideas to his father and brother, and not long afterwards, Butte Creek Candles was established. In the beginning, the process was trial and error. “Just looking something up won’t do” Brad states as he recalls the memories from the beginning of the businesses. To perfect the candle making process, Brad needed to try to make the candles himself. At first, the candles he made had no smell at all, but now that Brad has learned how to make them on his own (with the perfect amount
BRAD DEBORD of scent!) he rotates different candles seasonally. Currently, some of the candles he is selling for the cozy fall season are Butterum and Berry Vanilla. In the scorching summer, some of the more popular scents are Watermelon and Ocean Breeze. Butte Creek Candles took off when Brad had the opportunity to be a part of the Kids Inc Business Showcase, hosted by the Chico Mall. This program is an opportunity for kids to showcase their designs and business ideas. Brad was selected to be in this program this summer in July. From a young age, Brad has always been inspired by his dad, Greg. Greg is an entrepreneur, so this has influenced Brad’s wish to start his own business. When he is older, Brad hopes to continue to run his own business like his father. Autumn has always been one of my favorite seasons. Something about golden leaves falling and the scent of pumpkin pie fills my heart with joy. Brad’s candles are the perfect way to bring a bit of nature into your homes this fall season! If you are interested in ordering candles this holiday season, please contact Brad through his Butte Creek Candle Company Facebook page.

DEFEATING DEPRESSION Being a mother is no easy task. As if the challenge of developing and carrying a new human for 10 months isn’t difficult enough, mothers are expected to be impervious to the multitude of challenges that face them post-pregnancy and to do so with a smile on their face, often with little support or understanding to speak of. Though pregnancy and childbirth are usually a joyful and transformative time for mothers, it can also be a daunting one. One in five mothers will experience depression anxiety during pregnancy and one in seven will experience it post-pregnancy. Those statistics double for mothers who are living in low-income situations. With nearly 700 new mothers in Butte County experiencing some form of pregnancy-related depression each year, raising awareness for the condition and providing early detection is critical to treating it and ensuring the long-term health of both mother and child. Anna Bauer, Gail Garcia, and Ann Dickman are part of a collective on a mission to do just that. Mothers Strong is a collaboration of healthcare providers, local agencies, businesses and champion moms who are providing a network of help and support for mothers experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, depression and anxiety that occurs during and/ or after pregnancy. Each member of the group brings a unique and necessary skillset to the collective, allowing the group to accomplish more than any one therapist or counseling program could on their own. The group officially formed in 2014, allowing them to achieve the collective impact they needed to bring knowledge of perinatal depression to Butte County. Their annual First 5 funding is $30,000 to provide training, scholarships for professional education, outreach and awareness campaigns, and host mothering summits designed to educate mothers and mothers-to-be. Over the past 2 years, Mothers Strong has made huge leaps in achieving their goal of incorporating more therapists who are trained and available to moms and partnering with community resources like 16

Butte 2-1-1, a 24/7 community organization that takes phone calls from people in need of resources. They’ve also founded Mothers Strong Cafe, a private Facebook group where mothers can connect with other mothers at any time via social media to offer or receive support. The group is accessible to moms through the Mothers Strong Facebook page at www.fb.com/mothersstrong. The group is looking forward to 2017, and working to further expand their collective of trained healthcare professionals while championing further awareness of this very common and very treatable condition. They plan to continue working with local OBs and pediatricians to implement screening measures that ensure timely detection and treatment for mothers and are more than willing to provide whatever support physicians’ offices may need to make it happen. As Anna, Gail, and Ann are quick to point out, awareness of pregnancylinked depression is key, and treating the condition is much more approachable than most might think. If any of the following statements apply to you or a mother you know, simply dial 2-1-1 or visit www.helpcentral.org/mothersstrong for further information. The path to wellness is just a short phone call away. • I have not been able to laugh and see the funny side of things. • I haven’t looked forward with enjoyment to things. • I have blamed myself unnecessarily when things went wrong. • I’ve been anxious or worried for no good reason. • I have been so unhappy that I have had difficulty sleeping. • I have felt sad or miserable. • The thought of harming myself or my baby has occurred to me.

At The Spa with
HALEY JORGENSEN Neatly tucked away in the southeast corner of Philadelphia Square on Chico’s Esplanade, The Spa has been discretely beautifying and inspiring customers with the foremost products and services in the beauty industry for the past two years. A good deal has changed during that short time, and The Spa has grown significantly since we first attended its grand opening in October two years ago, but their attention to detail and customer experience have remained unwavering. They have continued to operate as a tightly knit family of professionals, and it is likely that this closeness and their commitment to customer service has earned them their perfect five-star rating on both Yelp! and Facebook. Most recently, the team at The Spa welcomed Haley Jorgensen into their family. A Chico native, Haley graduated from Chico State with a degree in health science education in 2013 before venturing into the world of aesthetics. Intrigued with the industry, she found a program offered in the field and decided to give it a shot. Unsurprisingly, she fell in love with it and decided that she would make it her life’s work to teach others how to take better care of their skin. She graduated from the program in 2014 and began working at The Hair Co. as an esthetician in Chico shortly thereafter. Over the next two years, Haley built an impressive clientele at The Hair Co., working alongside some of Chico’s most well-regarded stylists. She continued seeking out new education and learning to perform new treatments, eventually deciding to take the next step in her career at a surgical spa. In September of 2016, after two-and-one-half years as an esthetician, Haley joined The Spa as their new skin therapist. With an “expert” designation from Dermalogica, one of the skin care industry’s most highly rated brands, Haley brings a wealth of knowledge to The Spa along with the specialized Dermalogica Facial. A completely customized facial service, the Dermalogica Facial is unique to each individual’s needs, utilizing pure, rich ingredients and various treatments that can reverse the signs of aging, treat acne, correct abnormal skin pigmentation, and reduce inflammation, redness, and rosacea. As a representative of the brand, she has access to, and experience with, the entire product line and is excited to share her knowledge with visitors. Beyond the Dermalogica Facial, Haley provides a number of classic spa services including waxing, spray tans, and makeup for bridal parties. She also offers chemical peels, a skin-resurfacing procedure that takes 30-45 minutes, and the popular Hydrafacial, an hour long hydradermabrasion procedure that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, hydrates, and provides antioxidant protection to the skin with no discomfort or downtime to speak of. Haley is determined to help her clients find the skin they’ve always wanted and teach them how to maintain it. As she puts it, “This job is not work, it is fun and rewarding! I’ve built wonderful relationships with clients that are now friends! I absolutely love it!” With an excitement that mirrors the other women who work here, we know she’ll fit right in.

GO BACK TO THE BASICS FOR
GOOD HEALTH!
What we eat is critical. Food acts as medicine to maintain health, as well as prevent and treat disease. As an emergency department physician for 30-plus years, I’ve seen many patients suffering from chronic health issues such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and obesity-related illnesses. What most people don’t realize is that diet determines 80 percent of their body composition. By choosing healthy foods, individuals can reduce their risk of disease and chronic conditions. In fact, a healthful diet can help prevent cancer, since up to 60 percent of cancers are diet-related.
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E N OV E M B E R 201 6
So what’s my prescription for disease prevention and maintaining a healthy weight? · Ditch sugar and heavily processed foods · Choose lean meats, fish, and poultry
Our genes are designed to eat like our ancestors did. Cavemen ate to nourish the body and give it strength to carry on the daily functions of life. They didn’t eat for enjoyment or social reasons very often. Archeological evidence shows that when we ate a diet reliant on protein-rich foods and healthy fats, we were lean and healthy. Scientific evidence confirms this. Of the three macronutrient classes of food, only two are essential: protein and fat.
· Consume plenty of dark, leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables
Our ancient ancestors rarely died of heart attack or cancer. They died from old age, viruses, or forces of nature. Our recent foray into a diet consisting of highly refined grains, processed foods, and carbohydrates is out of sync with what our genes expect of us, causing epidemic levels of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
· Take it outside with hikes, walks, runs, and other outdoor activities
Our massive sugar consumption has increased by nearly 30 percent since 1983, fueling obesity and other health problems. While the American Heart Association 20
recommends no more than 9 teaspoons of sugar per day, the average adult consumes 22 teaspoons per day and the average child consumes 32 teaspoons per day. Sugar not only adds empty calories and displaces nutritious foods in the diet, but it’s been linked to the incidence of heart disease as well.
· Go for good fats like avocados, nuts, olive oil, and coconut oil · Drink lots of water to flush toxins and fill you up · Drop bad habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption · Do simple exercises like squats, push ups, sit ups, and planks
By making simple changes, you’ll dramatically improve your energy, weight loss efforts, fitness level, and overall health.

BEAUTY Q&A DA R K U N D E R E Y E C I R C L E S
Oh, those frustrating dark circles under your eyes! Are you getting enough sleep but still suffering from periorbital discoloration or “dark circles? Here are some reasons why and what you can do about them. What are some reasons for dark circles under the eyes?
by dark circles, thinner skin, and fine lines. Vitamin A derivatives such as Retinols can help increase collagen production which will aid in the reduction of dark circles and fine lines. Vitamin derivatives should always be used wisely and in moderation. Always seek advice from a licensed esthetician or dermatologist.
Genetics: The skin surrounding the eyes is some of the thinnest skin on our body. Blood accumulates under the eyes causing fragile capillaries to stretch and leak. If you genetically have fair skin and thinner than typical skin under your eyes, the blueish or reddish discoloration will be even more apparent.
Allergies: Histamines that are triggered by our immune system when suffering from allergies cause blood vessels to become inflamed. When these vessels are dilated, they become very prominent in color. Taking an antihistamine on a regular basis will help minimize the inflammation, again reducing any discoloration.
Some options to combat this are concealing with makeup. Concealers with yellow undertones cover bluish circles, peachy undertones combat yellow or brown discoloration. Keep the texture creamy as under eye skin is easily dehydrated. However, too much concealer can actually draw more attention to the area. Apply, set, and blend out with a brush or beauty blender. Another trick is to rinse your face with cold water instead of warm water. Warm water is a vasodilator, cold water is a vasoconstrictor, keeping the stretching of these vessels to a minimum, therefore reducing discoloration.
To understand what your cause of dark circles are, try this trick: gently stretch under eye skin. If the area doesn’t change in color, it is likely allergy related. If the area becomes darker, it is probably genetics or aging.
Age: Collagen is the protein responsible for maintaining the structure, smoothness, and elasticity of our skin. As we age, the loss of this protein becomes more apparent 22

DESIGNER BRANDS WITHOUT DESIGNER PRICES
It’s been nearly 4 ½ years since Cindy Brochheuser opened the doors to her upscale consignment boutique, Labelz, in the Mangrove Plaza shopping center. Over that time she’s managed to accomplish each and every goal she set for herself all those years ago when we first interviewed her about the new clothing store. What started as a small consignment shop, carrying a small selection of items curated from Cindy’s own closet along with items from family and close friends, has grown to a full fledged boutique whose selection holds its own with any other boutique in town, and at a significantly lower price. As an upscale consignment boutique, Labelz now provides a wide variety of designer items usually priced at 25% of what you would find in a standard retail store, and brands that you likely won’t find elsewhere in Chico. Hard to find designers like Eileen Fisher, Anthropologie, Vince, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Sanctuary, and Lulu Lemon can be found throughout the store alongside sought after brands like Chico’s, Miss Me, Rock Revival, Citizens for Humanity and Seven for All Mankind. With over 2,000 consignors, there’s no shortage either, as the items continue to pour in, most carefully worn, while the others are brand new with tags still attached. Our favorite part of the Labelz experience is that it provides residents of Chico and surrounding communities with the ability to treat clothing as an investment, much like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading Co. do for cities like Berkeley and San Francisco. Clients are able to schedule an appointment with Cindy directly, create an account, and review their items in person. Consignors receive a generous 40% return of the sale price of any of their items in cash at the end of the month, or may spend 50% of the sale price as credit to shop within the store itself. Considering the store’s offerings, most consignors tend to choose the latter. Over the years, Cindy has remained committed to her original purpose of using the store to raise funds for one of her favorite charities, PawPrints, a local charity that provides free spay and neuter clinics while also helping pet owners with vet bills when they can’t afford them. A $5 rack sits prominently placed in the center of the store, fully stocked with beautiful items whose full proceeds go directly to funding this wonderful charity. GIFTED KIDS You know the term “gifted” and what it means in your child’s education. “Gifted” students are quick learners and good in science and math as well as creative areas like writing or theatre. They generally achieve above average test scores. There is another type of “gifted” that easily includes the above mentioned, however could be interpreted as “different.” These kids may have unseen friends and animals and they “imagine” stories of people and situations that are wild and colorful. These children are very smart as well, although sometimes exhibit extremely stubborn behavior and will not cooperate in family or school situations. They balk at mediocre resolutions. Sometimes they are quiet and sometimes loud and boisterous, seeking constant attention. Often they are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD because their attention span seems short, when in fact they know the answer to a question so quickly that they wait for the rest of the class to get the answer, start looking around, and appear unfocused. Gifted children claim boredom when not engaged in activities they choose, and home life may be chaotic just because they are who they are....Sensitives. There can be trouble in or out of school with peers, parents, or teachers. Perhaps you have a silent, angry teen who grunts answers, or maybe you the parent are operating with older paradigms of discipline that simply do not work. What if you could have harmony in your home without drama or resentment? Just calm communication with mutual understanding for everyone’s needs—adults, teens and others. My coaching services are offered to both parent and child separately, bringing sacred connection and freedom to each person, individually seen and recognized for their unique gifts. Do Hearing Aids
Ever Work? If you said “NO!” you are not alone. I see many people who come to my practice— reluctantly—with the same attitude about hearing aids: “They don’t work!” The truth is that hearing aids can and do work. Of course, not all hearing aids are created equally, and some technology brands are much better than others. However, the successful performance of hearing aids is far more reliant on the professional who does the fitting, and knows their proper use of state-of-the-art diagnostic testing equipment.

BETTY At 89 years old, Betty Wilcox is about as spry as they come. Originally from Southeast Kansas, she’s lived nothing short of a full life. Speaking with her, one would never imagine that the past two years of her life had been spent in various levels of acute rehabilitation due to complications stemming from a quadruple bypass 18 years ago. In February of 2015, Betty found herself experiencing considerable chest pain. She rushed to the hospital and, after a series of tests, was told she had osteomyelitis, a bone infection in her sternum. She was scheduled for an operation in Redding where surgeons dug out the infected bone and skin from her chest leaving her weak and bedridden for a number of months. Upon returning home, she began feeling chest pain again. Another set of tests revealed that the infection hadn’t been fully resolved. Rather than undergo another surgery, Betty elected to receive care at Twin Oaks Post Acute Rehab in Chico. Weak and overcome by dizziness, Betty remained hooked up to an IV for a lengthy period of time to battle the infection. It was during this time that she was also diagnosed with benign tremors which had affected
her speech and mobility. Though she was exhausted from the whole ordeal, she gained strength from the love shown to her by both her own family and the staff at Twin Oaks, in particular Ivory Brown, who became a second family to her. Determined to make a full recovery, and given the proper support to do so, Betty worked with the healthcare professionals at Twin Oaks to regain her strength and mobility. She underwent speech, occupational, and physical therapies, eventually allowing her to achieve functional independence. As everyone at Twin Oaks is quick to mention, Betty never wavered in her enthusiasm, confidence, and motivation to get better. As Betty is quick to mention, the staff at Twin Oaks was sure to support that mindset to make her goals a reality. She set a date of August 1st, 2016 as her release date and, with a charming stubbornness, did exactly as she planned. She arrived home at 11am on August 1st and, thanks to her determination and the support of the staff at Twin Oaks, is well and can accomplish her daily tasks with nothing more than minimal supervision. As her daughter, Ladonna Joyner, mentions, “She’s so confident in herself since she returned that I have to remind her to use her walker.”
IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER LIKE BETTY WHO COULD USE A HAND IN GETTING BACK ON THEIR FEET, CALL TWIN OAKS POST ACUTE REHAB AT 530.342.4885, AND BE SURE TO TELL THEM BETTY SENT YOU.
Sadly, this rarely happens as very few hearing aid dispensers in the United States (including those audiologists who dispense hearing aids) have invested in this testing equipment. Worse, of those who do have the equipment, a small fraction actually use it! What this means is that the “professional” who does not use this equipment is simply guessing about the status of the patient’s hearing. The result is that patients are unsuccessful in their ability to hear—and where do they place the blame? The hearing aids! Let me ask you this: If you had hip replacement surgery, and afterward were in terrible pain and could not walk, would you blame the prosthetic? If you hired a plumber to fix a drip in your kitchen sink, and that evening you turned on the faucet and a geyser of water erupted, would you blame the pipes? Of course your displeasure in these scenarios would be directed at the person who performed the service. So, why does everyone blame the hearing aids? It shouldn’t be this way, and I’m happy and proud to say that this simply does not occur with my patients... because hearing is a wonderful gift! Just Say “No” to Holiday Weight Gain The holidays are here, and with them, all of the parties! Complete with sweets, indulgent dishes, and treats everywhere you look. Next, the extra pounds begin to pile on. If you’re expecting a high intensity workout or some miracle concoction to prevent that weight gain, you’re not going to find it here. Yes, the holidays can be tough, but I truly believe that you are tougher. You are worth more than that extra piece of pumpkin pie, the countless chocolates, the seconds, thirds, or even fourths. nfortunately, I’ve seen it happen all too U often—holiday weight gain that leads to New Year’s resolutions of losing that extra poundage. However, having a healthy holiday season simply starts with you. Let me warn you though, it’s going to be tougher than any workout and harder to digest than any cleanse you’ll take. It will be the most powerful thing at your disposal: are you ready to take note? You will have to politely say, “No thank you” against all the pressure from your family, coworkers, and friends. In the end, you’ll have the greatest reward—that feeling of satisfaction that you made it. The truth is, along the way, you’re going to be met with resistance. At first you’ll hear those close to you say, “Why not?” or “It’s just one piece, what harm can it do?” Yes, it’s only one piece, but as those pieces slowly start to add up over the next 90 days, you’ll find yourself not fitting into that pair of jeans you wore just a few weeks ago. When you get past that initial resistance and remain strong, those that wanted you eat that cake will soon be cheering you on. They will want you to succeed. T his is the true test of your self to achieve your “why,” your goal. What do you want to accomplish this holiday season? It all starts with you, and you have the power to achieve it! is how to be grateful in times of hardship. Sure, for a lot of us, Thanksgiving will be warm and fuzzy. I think of clove and nutmeg, pumpkin spiced everything. But for some of us, it will be a little more complicated. There is good in every situation. Only, the problem may be finding it. Or is that the problem? I have found that for most of us, the moment of our deepest gratitude comes in a compare and contrast style. You’re driving down the highway and someone is pulled to the side, changing a flat tire. The new tires you just had to shell out a whole paycheck for may have hurt when you signed that dotted line, but you’re not stuck to the side of a dangerous road bruising your knees and banging your knuckles.
GRATITUDE The holiday season is quickly approaching, and with it will come the stirring of many different emotions. Some will be good, and I hope most are for you. But others will be not so good. Regardless of how the holidays have treated us before, the intention remains the same. Gratitude. You will probably hear this in and out all season long, but what you may not hear about
Perhaps it’s perspective. We live so much in the moment of now that we often forget the past and future. What brought us to this moment? Why are you here, and where are you going? This moment may be terrible, but it’s also an opportunity. For growth. For maturity. For experience. Sometimes we experience terrible things that can be used to connect us with others who have had the same experience. Maybe this holiday season you can be the person to talk someone else off the cliff. Maybe you’re the only person who can, because you’ve been there. You know what it’s like to stare down that chasm and wonder how far it goes before it stops.
But if you just turn around, you’ll see the mountain top on the other side. Sometimes it’s hard to see the mountain top without help. We need more people pointing to it. If you keep staring down that chasm, you’ll never see it. That’s called perspective. You’ve come this far, and you can be grateful for that. Remember the things that brought you here. The good and the bad. Remember those who are less fortunate. Compare and contrast. Within all of it is an opportunity to help. What does helping do? It creates gratitude. For everyone involved. Here are some tips that you can use daily to stay in state of gratitude. • Wake up every day and vocalize what you are grateful for • Read or listen to something inspirational • Give something to somebody every day. Time. Food. Attention. A compliment. A smile. A statement of appreciation. Put a smile on your face regardless of the situation. When you smile, out of habit your body tells your brain that you should be happy and eventually, your brain will listen. Your emotional state responds to your physical actions, like Pavlov’s dog salivating at the sound of a bell.

Holiday Centerpiece
Holiday decorating with flowers can be fun and easy when you have the right tools and supplies. To make this traditional cornucopia you will start with a “Horn of Plenty.” They come in a variety of materials and many sizes and are available at most craft stores. Find one that fits your style and size of table. Next you’ll need a water tight liner to place inside. You will place your wet floral foam in that liner. Then the fun part starts! You will need some greenery (we used leather leaf, but you can even use some clippings from your garden) and some fresh flowers. For a more traditional and long lasting bouquet you’ll want to use flowers like mums, carnations, alstroemeria, and miniature carnations. For a more formal look, but not as long lasting, roses and lilies
make a beautiful and elegant statement. Finally, finish your look with filler flowers, like wax flower or statice, along with your favorite ribbon and fall accent picks from the craft store and you have one of a kind centerpiece with bragging rights! If all of this seems a little overwhelming, we invite you to attend a “Design and Unwined” floral class. You will learn step by step how to make a beautiful custom bouquet while sipping on wine and nibbling on appetizers. Each class offers a new and different bouquet and during the holidays there are many craft classes as well.

Do You Need a Trust? Let me start my answer by stating that no estate plan is like a bathrobe. One size does not fit all. Every person or family I deal with has different estate needs. Setting up a trust is generally more expensive than a simple will, but a trust can be a much better fit for many people. A will generally has no effect until you die, whereas, a trust normally becomes effective upon signing. A trust can be an effective tool for your care in the event of disability, avoiding conservatorship, and transfer of your property upon death, without probate. It is a simple fact of modern life, which we have seen in our practice, that more and more people are being affected with Alzheimer’s and dementia, even at an early age. A trust can effectively avoid having to put these people through a miserable conservatorship proceeding and permit their spouse or loved ones to have access to resources for their care. A trust normally names trusted people who determine that a person is no longer mentally able to take care of their financial affairs. The trust control is then changed to a new trustee named in the trust. This process can also greatly help prevent fraud and a thief from taking advantage of the disabled person. This transfer of the trustee may be the most important aspect of a trust for many clients over the age of 35. The trust can also avoid the expense, effort, and delay in the distribution of the estate that often occurs with probate. Avoiding probate can save an estate a great deal of money. The larger the estate the more important the advantage of a trust can become. This was just a very quick overview. Any estate plan must fit an individual’s need. For many people, all that is needed is a simple will. For others, a trust is a much better fit. Please remember that when it comes to your estate, you need to see an attorney that meets with you and creates an estate plan that fits your needs. That “one size fits all” robe, or estate plan, is likely to leave you exposed. Cover your backside. PERSONS & MILLER ATTORNEY 1209 Esplanade #4 Chico, CA 95926 530.893.0717

NEW AGAIN KITCHEN REMODELING PRESENTS HOUSE CALL:
CONSTRUCTING CORNING
THE CLIENT
Owen Gold Granite Countertops
If there’s one thing that our home makeover profiles are in no shortage of, its wild stories of how two people found each other. A foreign exchange student from Sweden, Anna Abel met her husband, Jason, at Corning High School during a semester abroad. Randomly placed by the exchange program, Corning was about as much of a culture shock as one could expect when traveling from Sweden. As the story often goes though, she returned home and later found her way back to Corning. Since moving to Corning in 1996, she and her husband have developed a formidable construction and real estate business, managing their 30 rental units throughout northern California and most recently completing construction of their first spec home, tucked away on a quiet lot in Corning. The home is for sale (or rent) and just the start of their endeavor, with plans

to build two more homes in Gerber and another in Corning in the near future. If the first is any indication of the three to follow, we’re certain they won’t last on the market for long. Though we’ve covered a fair share of local kitchen remodels completed by New Again Kitchen Remodeling over the past few years, the Abel’s new construction is the first project we’ve covered where New Again assisted in building the kitchen from scratch.
THE CALL
THE CURE
When it comes to selling new construction, timeliness is key. The longer a home sits unfinished, the longer it takes to get it on the market and, ultimately, the more it ends up costing the builder. With this in mind, Anna began sourcing the materials for the interior of the home while designing it. She found the perfect flooring, cabinets, fixtures, and appliances, but finding the perfect countertop to complete her open concept kitchen was still in the unfinished column. She loved white kitchens but had never built one herself, so she reached out to a friend for recommendations and was referred to New Again. She met with Ric, explained what she was looking for and the two set out to find the perfect countertop. With a fast-approaching deadline, the two made quick work of their first meeting, selecting the ideal granite slab, signing off on the proposal, and scheduling the install—all within the required timeframe and on budget. CONNECT
New Again arrived at the new home in Corning a few short days later and began putting the finishing touches on the kitchen. A massive, 8-foot slab of granite in Owen Gold was installed atop the kitchen’s center island, creating a beautiful presentation to the home’s living room, and providing plenty of entertaining space for visitors. Behind it, two more slabs were laid side by side and cut to allow installation of an undermount sink and oven. The counters were bullnosed to provide a break from the sharper lines of the cabinetry, and did an excellent job in tying the kitchen and its appliances together. The entire process was completed in just one short day and, as the pictures above show, the end result is absolutely beautiful.
and fit my design. It was a great experience and I’ll definitely be using them again,” says Anna. With three more homes slated for completion in the near future, it sounds like this may not be the last of Anna’s homes in Upgraded Living. The Corning home is available for rent ($1,700/mo) or purchase ($595,000). If you’re interested in renting, contact Teresa at 1st Choice Realty in Corning at 530.824.4101. To purchase the home, call Anna directly at 530.520.1020. One thing’s certain, we’ll be jealous of whoever moves in.
Modern, open, and completed on time, the kitchen is exactly what Anna was hoping for, and she’s quick to thank New Again for their part in it. “They were in my budget

chalkboard What are we thankful for this year? Hidden thrift store treasures, of course! Chalkboards are fun, versatile, and so easy to make. With just a few simple materials, you can turn a forgotten mirror or picture frame into a festive way to send a special message. We found this beautiful wooden mirror at the Arc Store in Chico for just $20! For just a few dollars more, it was transformed into a charming piece of decor that can be updated to fit any season! Materials needed: • Mirror or picture frame with glass • Painter’s tape • Chalkboard spray paint • Paint for frame Directions: • Mask off your frame with painter’s tape before spray painting your glass. • Following the directions on the can, paint your glass in a well ventilated area. We used two coats of spray paint for our chalkboard. • Allow the paint to dry completely before removing the tape and painting the frame. • If necessary, sand the frame before applying paint to your frame. We used a matte, chalk finish paint for a softer, vintage look.

Caring for the Community:
PA R A D I S E H O S P I C E Each culture has its own way of dealing with death—some revere it, others celebrate it, and then there are cultures like our own that tend to mourn it. It is an eventuality of life, but the subject of death itself is often treated as taboo, especially within our society. As a result, it is seldom discussed. The topic was shot down at the dinner table countless times growing up, which says something, considering that nothing else—politics, religion, or otherwise—was treated that way. It is an uncomfortable subject for most, and often made more difficult in that the discussion is usually had when one is dealing with a stressful and traumatic event, such as the impending loss of a loved one. The discussion is equally difficult for the person who is soon to pass, as there are feelings of worry and perceived abandon regarding the leaving behind of one’s family. Truly, there are few subjects or experiences as difficult as death, but thankfully there are organizations like Feather River Hospital’s Paradise Hospice and Paradise Hospice House that are uniquely trained to assist with the experience. With November being National Hospice Month, there’s no better time to bridge the conversation than now. Hospice care is the provision of end of life care for individuals and their family members who are living with a terminal illness. It is a program designed to work with those who are likely living in the last six months of their life, assisting them and their loved ones through the process of passing. Though often seen simply as in-home caretaking, the program at Paradise Hospice is actually much more, focusing on normalizing the concept of death for the family as a natural ending of 44

life, and preparing everyone for the emotions and experience of the passing. The program seeks to provide whole-person care, preparing the mind, body, and spirit of everyone involved in the process, to make the passing as natural as possible. There are many myths surrounding hospice care. People often think that once they agree to hospice, they’re throwing in the towel and that death will come quickly as they’re giving into it. Many people are afraid to inquire about it as they feel they won’t be able to afford it, while others simply worry whether the level of care given will match their expectations. The truth is, that the care provided by hospice is skilled and focused, and isn’t provided at the end of a long day at another job. Hospice staff are trained specifically in providing comforting and attentive care for those who are soon to pass. Prior to 1983, hospice care was unfunded on the national level, making it largely volunteer based and more difficult to attain. Since funding in 1983, the industry has grown significantly, and with it, so too have its offerings. Alongside that funding came full coverage through Medi-Cal and Medicare, which now cover 100% of hospice care costs—no copays or other out-of-pocket expenses. Through this program, hospice becomes responsible for providing the people who assist the patients and families, as well as necessary medications, medical supplies, and equipment. There is always a registered nurse available and on call to help families with whatever may occur after hours as well. The majority of hospice care is provided out in the community, where the patient resides, whether that be the patient’s own home, a residential care facility, or a skilled nursing facility. At Paradise Hospice, approximately 75% of the patients are cared for in their home in the community, while the remaining 25% are in a residential care facility or skilled nursing facility. Regardless of the setting, the caretakers focus on providing comfort, dignity, and personal care, while supporting the family so they can be the primary care provider for their loved one at home.
Paradise Hospice is unique in that it not only provides hospice care throughout the community, but also runs a hospice house. As one of only 13 such facilities throughout California, Paradise Hospice House provides 24/7 nursing and skilled care for up to 6 patients at a time, guaranteeing a round-the-clock caregiver-to-patient ratio that isn’t normally available in outpatient scenarios. Though clinical services are fully covered by Medi-Cal and Medicare, the program itself is only partially funded by the government and runs at a loss each year. The home relies heavily on volunteers who run two thrift stores in Paradise, and raised almost $200,000 last year to support it. Approximately 60% of the patients served in the Hospice House come from an acute care hospital, and the Hospice House provides a home environment as the final hospitalization at the end of a long illness. It is usually utilized during the last days to week of life, and often used when family feels overwhelmed. In these cases, patients receive the terminal care they need, and families are given the opportunity to spend quality time with their loved one without focusing on the more stressful tasks of managing medications, cleaning, etc. The Hospice House is also available to patients of in-home hospice care, as a respite-stay, or temporary housing to relieve family by providing intensive care to get non-life threatening symptoms under control. Once the patient is comfortable they return home to their families. Regardless of whether a patient utilizes in-home or in-patient care, Paradise Hospice has a team of hospice professionals including registered nurses, home health aides, social workers, a chaplain, and volunteers who are available to assist depending on the needs and desires of the patient at any given time. Paradise Hospice provides support for the family after a loved one’s passing as well. A bereavement coordinator and agency provide support for up to one year after a patient’s passing with follow-up phone calls and visits to check on the family. The coordinator provides educational materials and information on grief, what to expect, how to take care of yourself, and how to care for yourself during the holidays via mail over the course of the year, along with workshops to help work through particular grief. The organization also hosts a social group every Friday morning called the Brunch Bunch, that meets at a local diner and shares their stories and experiences with loss. Guest speakers offer information and help keep the meeting light hearted. Paradise Hospice and Paradise Hospice House will be hosting their main fundraiser of the year, “Light Up a Life” on Thursday, December 1st at 5:30 p.m. The event takes place at 1289 Bille Rd. and proceeds directly support the continued operation of Paradise Hospice House. We hope that you can join us in celebrating this wonderful organization. THE ADDRESS: A Destination for Stylish Living Walking into The Address is like seeing your home design Pinterest board come alive. Each section of the boutique displays a different stylistic flair. Napa, Man’s Den, European, Coastal Living, and my personal favorite, Fixer Upper Farmhouse inspired by the hit HGTV series are among the mix. It is truly a home decorator’s paradise.
around this bird cage, lantern, or painting. Even though The Address utilizes market trends to choose the items sold in store, they also make it a point to offer unexpected items to add whimsy and inspiration for shoppers. Their talented team specializes in creating layouts with coordinating pieces for the style you want to achieve.
As I run my hands along a gorgeous red pillow, warm notes from signature candles displayed float elegantly around the room. The Address’ team focuses on arranging their store similarly to how you would see products set in a home. The benefit of shopping in person vs. online is you can actually feel the unique textures and see the true colors of design pieces. Additionally, having friendly employees in store to discuss how best to achieve the perfect look is important when decorating your home.
Forever loyal to their values and customers, The Address truly makes it a point to offer the best for our community. The Address first opened in Oroville, later moving to Downtown Chico. In June of 2014 they moved and expanded to an open, airy space on Cohasset Rd with lots of parking. They love being in the center of town and a destination for people to escape life’s stresses in a tranquil environment.
Sometimes you walk into a store and a surprising piece catches your eye. Suddenly, you can envision an entire room centered
Along with finally having the space they need to create notable product placement; recognizing their customers personally is something “The Girls” take pride in. They not only know the names of people who come
in, but also their pets and kids. The girls take pride in remembering their customers’ latest purchases and helping them find pieces to renew their look. Unlike many boutique decor stores, this one chooses to showcase items for their style and beauty, at notably reasonable prices. You deserve to enjoy the home you work hard for and with many years of decorating experience, The Address can certainly help achieve the look you’ve always dreamed of!

REFRAMING FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE? Personal Finance can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. As Financial Planners, our goal is to help people make better decisions relating to how they handle money. Most of the time this includes discussing topics like budgeting, saving and investing (and more specific topics like titling accounts for maximum tax or estate benefit). These are topics which can be strangely foreign to most people, because our culture generally encourages bad money behavior. Will Rodgers once said “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” During this holiday season we ask that you consider the following suggestions on how to reframe some of the common questions we face. Instead of: Should I check to see if the market was red or green today?
BY RENEE MICHEL, MBA AND JOE SWEENEY, CFP® FINANCIAL ADVISORS AT ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP
Instead of: Do I need to update anyone on my Christmas list? Think: Do I need to update my beneficiary forms? Instead of: How can I save the most on Black Friday? Think: Can I afford to save more through my 401(k)?
Instead of: Can I afford to miss that 15% off sale? Think: Can I afford another payment to my 15% interest credit card? Our wish is that you and your families finish out the year with all your financial “ducks in a row”, more money in your pockets (and retirement accounts), less “things” and lots of new memories and experiences to cherish for many years to come.
Instead of: How much shopping can I take care of Thanksgiving Weekend? Think: Have I spent enough time with my family this Thanksgiving Weekend? Instead of: How will the election results affect the stock market next month? Think: How will I plan to fund a 30 year retirement?
Think: Where are the best Christmas light displays this year? North State Symphony ‘Tis the season for the North State Symphony! Celebrate the beautiful transition into winter with a diverse trio of concerts. In November, trumpet player John Hagstrom will solo with the symphony at Laxson Auditorium for “Inspired by Italy.” He’s from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which Scott Seaton describes as having “the best brass section in any American orchestra.” The concert also includes Mendelssohn’s famous “Italian” Symphony, a crowd-pleasing opera overture, and a contemporary rhythm-driven work for strings. It’s a perfect Sunday afternoon outing: 2pm on November 13. In December, holiday concerts feature Sacramento-based soprano Carrie Hennessy joining the symphony’s baroque orchestra for favorites by Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach. Catch the show in Red Bluff on December 16, Chico (St. John’s Episcopal Church) on December 17, or Redding on December 18. Then on December 31st, ring in the new year with an exciting New York City-inspired pops concert at Redding’s Civic Auditorium! Concert and optional dinner tickets are available at reddingcivic.com. Single tickets for symphony concerts are on sale through the University Box Office at 530.898.6333. More information is at www.northstatesymphony.org.

WRITTEN BY KYLEEN BROMLEY PHOTOS BY ERIN HANSEN (LEFT) ROGER DIEFENDORF WITH HIS FAMOUSLY SWEET ONIONS (RIGHT) A STUNNING CHIOGGIA BEET
GLORIOUS ORGANICS “But have you ever had their sweet onions?” my editor asked me as we gingerly walked up the dirt road of Morning Glory Organics Farm to meet with Roger Diefendorf, the owner and farmer of the business. The morning was cool and crisp and the season for growing was changing. The melons had been mostly picked and sold and now it was time for gourds and fall produce to begin. With a hearty handshake and kind smile, Roger led us around the grounds, giving us a very historic and informative tour of his sustainable farm where he takes pride in how close to the produce he is. From turning over every melon to make sure they don’t get sunburnt, to the careful use specific worm castings for the healthiest soil, nothing on this farm goes unnoticed. Roger has an impressive knowledge of the varieties of fruits and vegetables that grow best in the soil here in Butte County. Starting in 2008, Roger and his wife Kaye began working together on this small sustainable farm with a mission to grow “the oldfashioned way,” which is to say, as organically and naturally as they can. In fact, the hens on the farm not only provide an excellent bounty of eggs, they also provide the farm with insect control. Again, every detail of the farm is tended to with care and consideration to make the most health-conscious product available to Butte County. A feat I feel, based on our short tour with Roger, they have accomplished.
To give you an idea of the work that Roger and Kaye put into their farm, imagine walking across eight acres of land and planting seeds by hand, a task that had been all too familiar for them. But as the farm has grown, Morning Glory has had to mechanize to make the job less time consuming. Also, unique to this farm is the fact that Roger and Kaye do not use commercial fertilizer on their crops. For the onions they started with seabird guano, but that became too expensive so they turned to worm casting, also known as compost tea. With worm casting and a touch of mycorrhizae (a form of fungus that colonizes on the root system of its host plant and provides an increase in water and nutrient absorption) Morning Glory Farms has found a way to help work against the hard clay earth and sandy soils that can deplete the plant of nutrients. Learned a little something there, didn’t you? Morning Glory Organics takes pride in finding the most natural and organic way in which they can grow the foods they eat and offer to our community. This is not just a process for Roger and Kaye, this is a lifestyle. It is their passion to create the healthiest options for produce, not just for their dinner table, but for yours as well.

6 Sanity Saving Tips for a
Perfect Turkey Day! 1. Make tedious potato peeling a thing of the past! Simply boil them with the skins on, then submerge in ice water and watch in amazement as the skins peel right off! 2. Microwave sweet potatoes for six minutes instead of baking them for an hour—you will get the same result and save precious oven space! 3. Pesky lumps in your gravy? Use a quick-mixing flour instead of all-purpose flour. 4. Did you know that starting white turkey meat at a cooler temperature helps to keep it moist? Place ice bags on top of the breasts for 30 minutes before cooking. 5. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to your pie dough to make it extra tender and flaky! 6. Not sure what kind of wine to serve? Something light and fruity like a pinot noir will pair perfectly with all of your Thanksgiving dishes. SOURCE: FOOD.COM
