NEW AGAIN KITCHEN REMODELING PRESENTS HOUSE CALL:
FROM AGED TO ADORABLE
THE CLIENT Originally from Southern California, Bob and Jackie Schneider made the trip to Chico to visit Bob’s aunt and uncle who had lived here for some time. Like so many before them, the trip turned into an extended stay; the two fell in love with our little city and decided to move here in 1976. They began working as soft drink distributors for the Dr. Pepper/Snapple group and, 11 years later, decided it was time to build the home they had always dreamed of. They found the perfect lot, tucked away neatly off of East Avenue, and set out the plans to have their custom dream home brought into reality. Their builder did just that and,w within the year, they were living in the home they’d so looked forward to. As time passed, parts of the home began to look a bit dated and in need of updating. As with most aging homes, a new paint job provided a quick facelift, but wasn’t enough to distract from the outdated elements of the home. Having managed to stave off any major renovations over their 29 years in the home, the two began to question whether 12
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E S E P T E M B E R 201 6
they should downsize and move into a condo or begin to refresh their home. Weighing the pros and cons of their situation, they decided that they couldn’t give up their location and that they would start renovating the home, piece by piece as cash flow allowed. With ivory colored tiles and brown grout surrounded by the home’s original oak cabinets, the kitchen truly looked its age. They decided it would be best to start there and, like the informed homeowners they were, visited the Chico Home and Garden Show to look for a company that could help modernize their kitchen.
THE CALL While browsing through the Home and Garden Show, Bob and Jackie came upon New Again Kitchen Remodeling and were drawn to the work they had on display. An example of a painted cabinet door caught their attention and they fell in love with the
granite options shown at the booth. They spoke to Ric, the store manager and interior designer, and set up a time to meet at the showroom. Upon visiting the showroom, the two were immediately impressed with the sales process. As Bob put it, “There was no pressure to speak of. Ric was easy going so easy to work with. He really wanted us to look through everything and make sure it was right for us, and his no-pressure attitude made the decision making process so much easier!” Jackie continued, “The showroom was so nice and their selection was great. There weren’t infinite things to choose from, which can be overwhelming. We had checked out ‘big box’ stores that were overwhelming. We really liked what they had to offer and how they offered it!” To top it off, Bob and Jackie had just talked with friends who had given them a glowing testimonial about their experience with New Again. It was a perfect match, and they invited Ric to get started on their project.
Granite counterops
THE CURE Ric visited the Schneider’s home, took measurements, and made his recommendations for which items would work best. Bob and Jackie decided to replace their tile counters in the kitchen with blue pearl granite countertops, and liked the look so much that they expanded the look throughout the home by replacing the countertops in their two bathrooms as well. They complemented the new countertops with new sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms along with a beautiful 6x6 bedrosian tile backsplash in parkkand arctic with a linear vintage mosaic tile border installed by New Again’s tile expert, Victor Cabrera. The entire process from demolition to renovation took a total of four days, and the couple completed the remodel by installing brand new appliances throughout. The changes quickly updated the look of both the kitchen and bathrooms, and allowed Bob and Jackie to breathe a sigh of relief over their newly modernized rooms. Jackie mentioned, “Everything was looking dull for CONNECT
so long; it’s so nice to finally have it look current. They made it new again! Everything looks so fresh and shiny.” When asked about the service, Bob remarked, “The installers were very nice and so patient. Everyone at New Again was great to work with; we’re really happy how it all turned out.” Excited over their newly renovated kitchen and bathrooms, the Schneiders are looking forward to inviting New Again back for phase two of the remodel where they plan to paint their cabinets, and redo their flooring, tubs and showers. They’re both quick to recommend that those looking to renovate should be sure to take their time and work with someone who they don’t feel pressured by. In multi-phase renovations like theirs, that kind of patience and lack of pressure is paramount to the success of the overall project. It’s exactly why they plan on recommending New Again to friends and family for years to come.
With another home renovation completed beautifully and another happy couple on the books, it’s no surprise that New Again continues to make a name for itself as the definitive kitchen and bathroom remodeling company in Chico. If you’re in a situation similar to the Schneiders and could use a hand in modernizing your kitchen or bathroom, give New Again a call today at 530.899.2888.

Crafting Heritage When your fourth great-grandfather was Chico’s original cabinet builder, it goes without saying that there are some big shoes to fill. For Dianna Petterson, it took a lifetime of traveling the United States and working in a multitude of different industries before finding her way back home to Chico to help continue the legacy her fourth-great grandfather had left. Born in Chico, Dianna met John Petterson in 1977 while they both worked at a convalescent home. They dated for a short period before she decided to move to North Carolina to pursue her passion in glass artistry. John took up a job building cabinets at Fleetwood in Chico and realized that he not only loved the work, but excelled at it as well. He continued honing his skills at Westgate Hardwoods, a friend’s shop in Orland, and finally Sawyer’s Cabinets in Chico. It was during these years that he met and worked closely with David Bingham, a transplant from New Jersey and graduate of VoTech, who also proved to be a detail oriented cabinet builder. The two became close friends and when Sawyer’s Cabinets closed its doors, John and David decided to start a custom cabinetry business of their own. As fate would have it, Dianna had recently moved back to Chico as well. She reconnected with John and, after seeing the caliber of work he and David were completing, decided to invest in the company they were forming. The three created an equal partnership, and Chico Custom Cabinetry was born in November of 2014. With over 70 years of combined experience in the cabinetry and construction industries, the team at Chico Custom Cabinetry is carving out its own niche in the local home improvement market, producing handcrafted, one-of-a-kind cabinets at affordable prices. Customers are encouraged to be involved in the process by selecting the type of wood, cabinet style, and hardware that best represents their vision, and there has yet to be a vision the team couldn’t handle. With John’s engineering talent and David’s skill in carpentry, they seem to have no problem living up to their tagline, “If you can dream it, we can build it.” With their local roots, working with other contractors on large renovation projects is not only something they enjoy, but also an opportunity to work with longtime friends. The past two years have proved to be huge for the young business. John and David have worked tirelessly to turn each customer’s vision into a reality, working on two projects at a time to maintain focus. Meanwhile, Dianna has promoted the business and followed up with customers after the completion of their project to ensure that the level of attention to their experience matches the attention paid to every detail of their cabinetry. The effort has paid off, resulting in rave reviews from customers, like the following from Amanda Ross of Chico, “I recently had Chico Custom Cabinetry make all of the cabinets at my home in Chico. They exceeded my expectations in so many ways. Their attention to detail, customer service, and design functionality, truly make this a reputable cabinet company in Chico. I highly recommend!” WITH THE FIRST TWO YEARS IN BUSINESS NEARLY BEHIND THEM, AND COUNTLESS YEARS AHEAD, CHICO CUSTOM CABINETRY IS QUICKLY MAKING A NAME FOR ITSELF AS CHICO’S GO-TO FOR HERITAGE-INSPIRED CUSTOM CABINETRY. IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING UNIQUE, OR HAVE A CUSTOM PROJECT IN MIND, CALL THEM AT 530.324.0032. TIMING IS EVERYTHING BY DAN BOSCH
The late spring and summer months are no-doubt known as the prime selling season when it comes to real estate. While it is true that a larger percentage of sales activity does historically occur from roughly May–August, opportunities for a home purchase abound throughout the year. As we approach the end of summer, those looking to find the right home can definitely still do so, and can even use the slower season to their advantage in some regards. The perception by many is that because more homeowners historically list their properties for sale during the prime months, that buyers will have more opportunities and more to choose from during this time as well. I always remind people who subscribe to this theory, that it is the peak season for both seller and buyers alike. Though more homes will undoubtedly be listed, competition amongst buyers will also be at its highest level. It is a relative equation and one that many do not consider when making the decision to buy a home. The bottom line is that there can be huge benefits to beginning your home search after the rush has subsided. Though there may be fewer homes to look at, the urgency to act on a property can lessen slightly as the number of buyers, and therefore the amount of competition is reduced. Another consideration to make regarding the benefits of purchasing a home during the fall season has to do with two additional factors—weather and school. You see, one of the reasons that activity levels are highest during the prime season is the fact that people have more time off and that children are out of school on summer break. 18
U P G R A D E D L I V I N G M AG A Z I N E S E P T E M B E R 201 6
The thought being, that if a buyer is going to tackle the process of securing financing and shopping for a home, a little extra time can be a big help. The fact that time off to move can sometimes be easier to come by during the summer months, when many are using vacation time anyway also factors in. Some buyers will happily trade their vacation, or part of it, for time to move and settle into their new home. The downside to this situation, however, is the fact that moving in the brutal summer heat can be a truly miserable undertaking. Scorching temperatures make things difficult and having children under foot can make the moving process less than enjoyable for all. Buying and moving in the later months of the year means cooler temperatures and that children are on a more set school schedule. There is something to be said for a day of uninterrupted work rather than trying to keep everyone in the family entertained during what can be a boring time for the younger members of the family. So, although the sun may be setting on another summer selling season, the reality is that this may not necessarily be a bad thing if you are thinking of purchasing a home. It is simply an opportunity disguised as a challenge. And a situation that can lead to an even better buying experience than you had hoped for.

Ken and Nancy Evans: “We have had many constuction projects done over the years for just about every form of addition or repair. Without a doubt your team led by Josh, Wil and Jesse were spectacular. They were professional, friendly, courteous and helpful throughout. At one point in time, Jesse who was leading the roof team, had his guys check roof tiles for cracks and replace them even though they were not part of the space they were working in. It is that kind of detail and extra attention that separates your company from others. “

I told them what I wanted so they designed it for me, and from there they took care of everything else, from the permits, to the paperwork and everything else that was required by PGE, plus they took care of a roofing problem without..raising the contract price. They were very professional, fair, honest, and easy to work with. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE (and did I mention I wasn’t even home when they installed it, we were on vacation.)

Family is important to Bob Byrd, who co-owns Oroville Auto Center with fellow NorCal native Benny Brown. Byrd’s office is tucked inside the center’s Ford dealership and is proudly decorated with reminders of two significant forces in his life: pictures from a Father’s Day photoshoot capture the smiles of his children, while framed awards recognize the business he and Brown have been building for the past ten years.
Driving Forward with
Oroville Auto Center
“I enjoy selling cars more than anything,” says Byrd, whose initial love of high school auto shop classes and muscle cars led him, almost accidentally, through the ranks of car salesmanship to manager. Eventually—after a fortuitous pairing with longtime entrepreneur Benny Brown—to co-owner and general manager partner of Oroville’s highest rated auto center. Now comprised of the Oroville Ford dealership and Oro Dam Auto Center, which sells Toyotas and Chevrolets, the business began with just one unexpected phone call. Though the two men had never met when Brown called Byrd in 2005 to suggest they enter business together, they joined forces almost immediately with a shared vision of a new and expansive dealership for the North State. This idea endured even through the recession of 2007, which halted their plans just after they were formed—luckily, Brown and Byrd had enough confidence to view the subsequent six-year hiatus as an obstacle rather than an endpoint. In 2013 they jumped right back to where they had left off, partnering with Ford for the ground-up creation of the automaker’s newest dealership north of Sacramento. While the year-long construction of Oroville Ford was an impressive undertaking in itself (with brand-specific materials shipped from all over the country, including an entry tower hailing from the east coast), Brown and Byrd had been looking for new opportunities to grow before the plans were even finalized. When Hobbie Auto Center closed in 2012, Brown called Byrd once again (in what was surely a moment of déjà vu) and both eagerly discussed if they should seize the opportunity and purchase this dealership. Unsurprisingly, plans for expansion began soon after. This addition established Oroville Auto Center as the only Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota franchise to sell all three brands, and now the two stores share approximately 70 employees and average an impressive 125 car sales per month. With their success, Brown and Byrd refuse to stand still and instead have turned their attention toward further developments: in addition to constructing a new car wash at the Ford dealership, the business is preparing for a complete remodel of the Toyota and

Chevy showroom that has been nine years in the making. Byrd and his employees will sacrifice their offices for temporary trailers during the construction, which will only retain the skeleton of the current showroom to create a larger, more modern space by the spring of 2017. Despite its relative youth, Oroville Auto Center has made quite an impression on the surrounding area, thanks in no small part to Byrd’s philosophy that customers should be treated like family—and with his sons in mind as his successors, and one currently acting as a salesman, work and family already exist in close quarters at the dealership. “I treat people how I want to be treated,” Byrd states, emphasizing the importance of sincere customer service in an age where many people come to the dealership already knowledgeable about their options after scouring information online. The internet is a friend to Oroville Auto, however, which utilizes sites like Facebook and Yelp to connect with customers and pay close attention to areas for improvement. “I look at every Yelp review, every Facebook review,” says Byrd. Feedback is important to the business, and it has received almost unanimously glowing reviews—the auto center is the only 5-star Yelp-rated dealer in the north valley, and their business page has more Facebook ‘likes’ than any dealership north of Los Angeles. After the years of planning that went into its creation, Oroville Auto Center has clearly earned a great reputation during the short time it has been open for business, and the hundreds of new car owners smiling from its Facebook page only further emphasize this fact. This people-pleasing philosophy extends well beyond the dealership as well. Not only does the auto center generate considerable tax revenue for the city as a business, but it also supports the surrounding community through countless donations and sponsorships to local sports teams, organizations, and events. Though Bob Byrd and Benny Brown may have entered the auto business because due to a shared love of cars, their love of people is what has truly earned Oroville Auto Center its success.

Dear Reader, Over the past three years, Formal Education has been blessed with the unbridled support and generosity of Chico and its surrounding communities. The encouragement, loyalty, and business we have received has humbled us to say the least, and we couldn’t be more thankful for it. Our customers have voted us Chico’s best men’s clothier two years in a row, and we’ve had the pleasure of sharing that stage with some of our own favorite clothing stores. Our neighbors in Downtown Chico have helped show us the ropes and learn the ins-and-outs of the retail business, an industry we previously had no experience in. When they say it takes a village, the proof is in our story. Since 2013, customers, friends, and family have shared their feedback with us—what we could do better, how we could make the store more approachable, and what mattered most to them. We took each of these pieces of feedback to heart and, when the opportunity to expand arose, we jumped on it. We opened the doors to our brand new location at 127 Main Street in the middle of August. Twice the size of our old location, the new space has finally given us some room to breathe and spread our wings. The feedback we’ve received over the years has been instrumental in defining the new space, including the price points we carry. We’re excited to launch our new lower price point, offering a full formal outfit—dress shirt, slacks, and tie—for $95, as well as full suits starting at $149. Stop in and see what’s new at Formal Education, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday– Saturday at our new location across from Upper Crust at 127 Main Street, and be sure to join us for food, drinks, and prizes at our grand reopening weekend on Saturday, September 24th, starting at 10 a.m. We can’t wait to see you there! Formally Yours,
Aveed Khaki

Forever THE DIAMOND IS
Between guest lists, dietary restrictions, accommodations, and getting everyone where they need to be at the right time, planning a wedding is no easy feat. The Hotel Diamond, and its premier dining experience, Two Twenty Restaurant, are on a mission to change that. Booking lodging and the rehearsal dinner in the same location is sure to alleviate stress for both the bride and groom as well as their incoming guests. With 43 rooms and suites available in the hotel, and one of the best locations to host a rehearsal dinner in town located directly below them, enough can’t be said about the convenience found here. The hotel itself has been referred to as the “jewel” of Chico, and has significantly changed the face of Downtown Chico, setting the standard for the finest accommodations in town. Completely reconstructed from the ground up, the Hotel Diamond offers every contemporary convenience that guests would demand. While contemporary, the hotel still remains true to its historic roots with fine craftsmanship visible throughout the building. Original style crown moldings, rich walnut cabinetry, and artisan furniture custom made to match the hotel combine to create a warm and inviting environment. Best of all, the hotel is located in the heart of Downtown Chico, within a few short blocks of all downtown restaurants, nightlife, and bars. Room block discounts are also available for those looking to host their wedding guests here. Led by Chef Michael Iles, former executive chef at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Two Twenty Restaurant is a unique addition to Downtown Chico. The entire restaurant space was renovated prior to opening last year, creating an environment that is both airy and elegant, including a piano bar and lounge that opens to the dining room, which in itself is composed of a formal dining space and an area that’s more relaxed—yet still luxurious—where people can have drinks or dine. The menu is just as impressive and reflects Chef Michael’s 30 years of restaurant experience. The resulting effort is referred to as California classic cuisine with a twist, served in an intimate setting by a warm and friendly staff. With a focus on fresh ingredients and sourcing items whenever possible locally, Two Twenty not only delights with delicious meals, but supports the local food community as well. Rehearsal dinner parties are invited to work with the chef directly to craft a menu that is perfectly suited to their own palette.

The restaurant is perfectly designed for rehearsal dinners, with multiple locations available to accommodate parties of up to 100 people. For those with smaller parties looking for privacy, the restaurant provides a beautiful subterranean wine room that is both intimate and cozy; for larger parties, the restaurant boasts two large banquet rooms. Directly adjacent to the restaurant itself is the hotel’s artisan cocktail bar, providing yet another locale with an atmosphere all its own for celebrating guests. Two Twenty offers multiple options on how the bill can be split up as well, allowing for the hosts to decide just how many drinks they are providing each member of the dinner party and when the remaining drink orders will be kept on separate bar tabs at the bar itself.

Suits or Tuxedos? Why to choose one over the other and when to rent vs when to own. A note from the folks at Chico’s #1 rated men’s store, Formal Education. We’d love to help make your wedding everything you’ve always dreamed of. Call us at 530.809.1839 to schedule a private fitting or visit us at 127 Main Street in Downtown Chico. A common misconception when renting a tuxedo is that it will fit like a tailormade suit. The truth is that they usually won’t. Due to the nature of renting, rental tuxedos are created to fit the greatest number of renters. As a result, tuxedos will naturally seem a bit more relaxed and less fitted than a suit. Often times it is more beneficial for the groom to consider purchasing a suit or tuxedo ahead of time and have it tailored to guarantee a more fitted look in photos, and throughout the ceremony and reception. Though it may seem somewhat different from most standard weddings, we tend to advise that the groom look different from his groomsmen. Just as the bride in her gown will look different from her bridesmaids, so too should the groom stand out from his groomsmen. This being said, it is perfectly acceptable for a groom to purchase a suit or tuxedo for a better fit during his own wedding, while his groomsmen rent their suits or tuxedos. It is important to note, though, that the groom and his groomsmen should all wear suits or tuxedos, but never mix the two. We recommend selecting suits if the wedding is taking place in the morning, early afternoon, or outdoors, whereas tuxedos make an excellent choice if the wedding is taking place in the late afternoon, evening, or indoors.
Consider renting a tuxedo or suit for: •• your groomsmen •• the financial benefit of those who won’t wear a suit more than once •• members of the wedding who are out of town, as sizing can easily be handled out of town •• individuals who have difficulty with standard sizing as rentals are shipped as separates and modified individually Consider purchasing a tuxedo or suit if: •• you are the groom •• your groomsmen would wear their suits more than once •• you’re aiming for more of a tailor-fitted look in photos

GARIBALDI’S CATERING:
Catering to Your Taste! Born to a New Orleans military family, it’s no surprise where Chef Kevin Garibaldi gets his Creole flare or his strict attention to detail. It is, however, a mystery as to how he maintains a humble nature with his level of experience in the food and restaurant industry. Studying under two master chefs in the world famous Sardine Factory on Monterey’s historic Cannery Row during the early 80s, Kevin had the opportunity to cook for world leaders, entertainment icons, and sports heroes. He continued his career by working in, and opening, some of the most notable restaurants on California’s central coast including Rogue Restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf, The Lodge at Pebble Beach, Quail Lodge Country Club, Clint Eastwood’s Hog’s Breath Inn and The Mission Ranch in Carmel. It was at these fine establishments that he had the opportunity to study a myriad of various cuisines and expand his cooking repertoire. Kevin moved to northern California in the early 90s looking to settle down and plant some roots of his own. He met his wife, Rachel, started a family, and continued his career in food service by 32

catering private and community events throughout Butte County. Over the years, it became more apparent to Kevin that the North State was in need of more caterers who offered fine cuisine at a reasonable price and more than just a standard menu of items to choose from. Pulling from his experience with multiple cuisines, Kevin decided to launch his own catering service in 2006 focused on affordable, high-quality cuisine with menus custom created alongside each of his clients. His new company, Garibaldi’s Catering, revolved around the tagline “cater to your taste,” which challenged customers to bring their own favorite recipes to their first meeting and include them in the catering of their wedding or event. In the decade that has followed, Kevin has created countless custom menus for his clients that have included everything from the bride and groom’s favorite shared meal to grandma’s secret recipe. The result has been weddings and events that made those attending feel comfortably at home, and that’s totally by design. After all, what says home to family and friends like grandma’s secret recipe?
Perhaps best of all, it isn’t just the customcatering or affordability that makes this business so sought after. Garibaldi’s Catering truly lives up to their “cater to your taste” signature, by offering full-service catering—both buffet style and fullservice sit-down dining. To top it off, they’ll even include dinnerware and stemware at no additional charge for those who visit their booth at the Chico Bridal Show. When it comes to planning weddings, every dollar saved is a dollar available for the following honeymoon and, as anyone who has planned a wedding will tell you, dinnerware and stemware are a significant cost unto themselves.

Layers of Love Opened in 2010, Lovely Layers Cakery began in a shared commercial space behind Bacio Catering. As a one woman show, she quickly became known for her attention to detail and the inspiring flavor palettes of her cakes. She built up her customer base and in just one and one half years expanded to Lovely Layers’ current location at 131 Meyers Street. Now a team of five, Lovely Layers Cakery is one of the largest and most well-regarded local bakeries. With nearly a perfect five-star score on both 34

Facebook and Yelp, over 200 different reviews, it’s no surprise they’ve come so far so fast. Currently, Lovely Layers bakes wedding cakes for 120 weddings each year along with 63,000 cupcakes, 18,000 specialty cookies, and another 1,200 specialty cakes. This year, they’re about to surpass those numbers with five months still remaining before year’s end. Emily and her team treat baking as an art form and have become known for their over-the-top cakes that you would normally expect to see on TV shows like Cake Boss or Ace of Cakes. No cake is ever the same and they customize each cake to the customer, with the ability to make accommodations for those who are vegan, gluten free, have nut allergies, etc; they’re even working on paleo options. Among their extensive list of portfolio projects, Lovely Layers’ recently completed a dessert bar for Build.com’s holiday party, creating desserts for over 1,000 people, as well as an 800-person cake for Enloe Hospital’s new helicopter unveiling, that naturally came with a replica helicopter made of cake. Perhaps our favorite part of Lovely Layers’ repertoire is their affinity for flavors that enchant
adult palettes. We’ve fallen in love with their boozy flavors and they’re a no-brainer for any wedding. From the Maple Bourbon—a maple pecan cake soaked with Jim Beam bourbon, filled with salted caramel and maple bourbon cream cheese frosting—to the Pink Champagne—a strawberry cake soaked with champagne and filled with vanilla custard, there’s something here for everyone. The Pale Ale—chocolate cake soaked in Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a butter cream frosting—happens to be one of their most successful flavors, and we can easily understand why. Whether you’re looking to delight those at your wedding, a special someone for their birthday, or an entire office, Lovely Layers is a surefire hit. They even have a walk-up counter where you can buy cupcakes to try their flavors for yourself before buying a full cake creation. IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO HAVE A CAKE BAKED FOR YOUR WEDDING, BE SURE TO SET UP A CAKE TASTING 8–12 MONTHS IN ADVANCE TO ENSURE THE DATE YOU WANT IS AVAILABLE. An avid baker since childhood, Emily Zimmerman enjoyed few things more than spending time in the kitchen perfecting her skills. It’s no surprise, then, that after graduating high school, attending culinary school was at the top of her list. She moved to Portland and enrolled in Western Culinary Institute, famous for producing such chefs as Matt Lightner and Homaro Cantu. It was here that she discovered her true passion for baking and decided to make it her life’s work. Finding jobs wherever she could that offered baking experience, Emily worked in multiple locations from Oregon to Kentucky before finally finding her way back to California. She landed here in Chico and worked at a number of local bakeries before deciding to open her own.
Wedding KID-FRIENDLY
The wedding experts have spoken, and even Martha Stewart says it’s ok not to invite kids to your wedding. If you do want to have a kid-friendly wedding though, here are a few ways you can keep the kids entertained so your guests can be present for you on your day. KID’S MENU
CANDY OR DESSERT BAR
MINI PHOTOGRAPHERS
Ask your caterer about chicken fingers, grilled cheese sandwiches or other easy foods. The kids will be happier and their plates will probably cost you less. If you have a large group of kids, consider setting up a buffet table for them with some simple, yummy options.
Many caterers offer a candy or dessert bar where you can make your own goodie bag or sundae. The kids will love it, but make sure they don’t overdo it or you’ll have hyper little guests with tummy aches.
Give the kids disposable cameras and “hire” them to walk around and take photos during the reception. It will keep them busy and you’ll end up with some fun photos from a different perspective.
CRAFT TABLES Set up a table or tables with craft supplies, coloring books, playdough and games. Cloth the table with butcher paper so they can color on it and you don’t have to worry about any linens being ruined.
BABYSITTER Most parents have a babysitter they trust, so feel free to ask them for suggestions. Reserve a room at your venue and set it up slumber-party style. Encourage the parents to bring blankets, movies and snacks. If it’s not in your budget, ask the parents in advance to bring cash to pay the babysitter.
BUBBLES Bubbles are always a fun option for kids. They are relatively mess-free, safe, quiet and fun. Designate an area where they can play freely with their bubbles.

Tucked away behind towering shade trees and within a free-flowing stream, the island can accommodate outdoor ceremonies and receptions of up to 400 people. Though outdoor weddings seem to be everyone’s ideal choice in northern California, weather can often be unpredictable, with rain and extreme heat both as possibilities throughout the summer months. Weddings booked at Neighborhood Church need not worry about weather affecting the festivities, though, as a backup location is always on reserve should the need arise to bring the party inside.

Weddings on wheels with Truck-a-Roni!
Q. We have been seeing Truck-a-Roni everywhere around Chico recently. Tell us a bit about it! A. Truck-a-Roni is a local food truck serving up some delicious Italian food. We have been in business about three years now and specialize in catering special events, such as weddings! Q. The food is undeniably delicious, but the truck is pretty impressive too. Is there a story there? A. Yes! We bought the truck because it was a vintage love machine from the 60’s. We wanted something with curb appeal so people would fall in love with not only our food but also our cool little truck, and we’ve spent a lot of time fixing it up to make that happen. We actually get invited to a lot of events because of how “cute” it is. Q. What kind of food do you serve? A. We are Chico-famous for our Mac and Cheese w/Bacon! But we have other great dishes too.
Some of our main dishes are Chicken Alfredo, Spaghetti with Meatballs, Cajun Pasta w/ real Crab and Shrimp, Meatball Sub, Chicken Parm Sub, and many different salad options to name a few. We also just started promoting our personal Naan bread pizza and it has been a huge hit. We offer options like side salads, garlic bread, appetizers, desserts, drinks, and more to round out the meal when catering events. Q. What type of events do you enjoy the most? A. We love weddings! They are such a special day and bring so many happy people together. My wife and I had a food truck cater our wedding 8 years ago so it is very rewarding to have our food truck serve at weddings. We love being part of people’s special day and we definitely go the extra mile to make sure everything goes smoothly. Q. Why would someone want Truck-a-Roni to cater their wedding? A. Everything about Truck-a-Roni is LOVE so why wouldn’t you want us there? We are a husband and wife business and we make all of our food from scratch. We have great customer service, our truck/set up provides beautiful ambiance, and we are also often times more affordable than
traditional catering! In addition to all of that, my wife cries at every wedding we cater, and 100% of the couples we have catered are still married! Seems like a no-brainer!! Q. How many people can you serve and how do you serve at a big event? A. We have catered weddings with upwards of 250 people. We can serve right from our truck or set up a buffet in front of our truck. We work directly with the bride or wedding planners to ensure every detail is managed effectively. Q. What’s the best way to contact you? A. Send us an email at truckaroni@gmail.com with the event date, location, estimated number of people, and contact info; we will get back to you with additional information and pricing!

We’ve had a bit of a crush on Truck-a-Roni since we first tried its food at a Fork In The Road Gathering. We reached out to owners Robby and Jessica Busick to ask them a bit about their food truck and how it came to be.

and after his second interview decided it was time to make his final move Chico. They were attracted to the beauty of Chico, the university setting, and the charming bucolic lifestyle. Dr. Hodari began his practice as a board certified dermatologist at North Valley Dermatology in August 2011 and has built one of the most successful medical practices since, treating a full spectrum of ages and dermatological conditions. What started as general care of acne and skin aberrations, Dr. Hodari’s practice has grown significantly with nearly 30% of his business now stemming from cosmetic offerings like chemical peels, botox, and fillers. The practice has focused heavily on skin cancer as well, as it is one of the more rampant diseases in our area. One-in-five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of their lifetime, and though this disease could prove to be fatal, early detection increases patient survival rates to 98%. Dr. Hodari’s early skin cancer screenings over the past five years have helped numerous patients combat this disease from early onset, when it is most treatable.
The Art of Beauty Five years is a considerable amount of time to most folks. Often associated with the standard length of time necessary in reaching a life goal such as a college degree or wedding anniversary, five years can seem like an eternity to many. In the business world, however, five years is a drop in the bucket. For most businesses, five years is the turning point in deciding whether the endeavor is actually viable or whether it’s an unprofitable hobby. To develop a new business in a new town, build an impressive list of clients, expand that business into another city, and purchase an existing business to further expand your own is something most business people would only dream of accomplishing during a lifetime in business. For local dermatologist, Dr. Kafele Hodari, it’s what he has accomplished in the past five years. Born in San Francisco, California has always been home to Dr. Hodari, though he spent a fair amount of his life outside of it. His father, a former college football player, moved the family to Michigan when Kafele entered the fifth grade to pursue a master’s degree in advertising at Michigan State. The moves continued onto Iowa and Ohio before Kafele graduated from high school, eventually moving back to Iowa to attend Grinnell College, a 1,200 student private university. Like his father, he too played college football, but
found himself drawn to a career in medicine. He returned to Ohio after college to attend medical school, completing a master’s degree in business during his time there. In 2005, medical residency took Kafele to Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, where he decided to study internal medicine. Two short months after arriving, he found himself face-to-face with the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. A medical resident, Kafele was forced to mature professionally far faster than normal, caring for forty patients each day during the storm and its aftermath in a hospital crowded beyond capacity and thrown into utter chaos. Surviving the disaster himself, he went on to complete his three years of residency at Ochsner Hospital while contributing to the rebuilding of New Orleans. Finally, he decided to specialize in Dermatology and completed three years at Tulane University Hospital before returning his sights on California. Having lived in both large cities and very small college towns during his journey, Kafele began his search for the perfect mediumsized town. Through this search he was introduced, by a mutual colleague, to Dr. Richey at North Valley Dermatology in Chico. He visited with his wife, a gifted runner who unsurprisingly fell in love with Bidwell Park,
Determined to provide the perfect marriage of art and science to enhance beauty, Dr. Hodari kept his sights trained on the bigger picture since beginning his practice in 2011. Working side-by-side with local dermatology legend and co-founder of North Valley Dermatology, Dr. Donald Richey, Dr. Hodari was given the opportunity to learn more about the cosmetic and aesthetic side of the dermatology field. During his time at North Valley Dermatology, Dr. Richey mentored Dr. Hodari and groomed him to eventually take over Rejuvené, his thriving cosmetic practice of 16 years. In January of this year, Dr. Hodari did just that, thereby expanding his business to include Chico’s most recognizable medical spa. Over the past six months, Kafele has worked to bring a fresh and youthful perspective to the business, focusing on cutting edge technology and new procedural techniques. Opening the doors to his dynamic staff, Kafele has created a genuine meritocracy within the business, encouraging and empowering each member to bring their ideas to the table with the mission of making Rejuvené even more customercentric and results-oriented. The move has proved to be well-timed, as the business has grown steadily under his leadership. At the heart of Rejuvené are four main categories of expertise: skin care products, laser and light treatments, injectables, and spa services. The combining of these categories ensures that customers receive the most effective anti-aging regimen possible, and all in one location.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF REJUVENÉ
SKIN CARE PRODUCTS The foundation of Rejuvené’s results-oriented success is in its skin care products. Using the highest grade ingredients available, the medical spa provides prescription-strength products that are safer and more effective than over-the-counter products sold at drugstores. Although aesthetic procedures are the fastest and most effective treatment options available, many people forget that the products used on your skin greatly enhance the effects of those procedures. Proper use of high-quality cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens with natural ingredients guarantees that patients will get the most out of any procedure performed at Rejuvené, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Whether you’re partial to brands like SkinMedica and ZO from Obagi, or would rather opt for Rejuvené’s own line of quality affordably-priced skin care products, there’s something here for everyone. Best of all, Rejuvené also carries hypoallergenic and oil-free makeup for those with sensitive skin as well as anti-aging creams made with heralded ingredients like resveratrol—the active ingredient in red wine, green tea polyphenols, and caffeine. These ingredients work synergistically to reduce inflammation and rid the skin of free radicals and other damaging effects. If you’re looking to keep your skin young, clear, and glowing, there’s no doubt you’ll find what you’re looking for in the product room at Rejuvené.
LASER AND LIGHT TREATMENTS Although skin care products can make a noticeable change in a skin’s appearance and texture, there are times when procedural intervention is necessary. Laser and light treatments tend to be the most effective option in these cases, and Rejuvené prides itself on utilizing the latest in laser and light technology. Lasers can resurface the skin and address color abnormalities that products alone cannot, as well as decrease fine lines and wrinkles. With a variety of lasers available at the spa, patients can select the treatment that best fits into their lifestyle and schedule. If downtime is not an option, and you’re ready to attack your Netflix queue, a deeper CO2-like laser can deliver great results. For patients wanting minimal downtime, a series of more superficial laser treatments can produce similar results.

Light treatments are useful for a number of dermatologic conditions as well, including treating hyperpigmentation of the skin (red or brown spots), unsightly hair and tattoo removal, and rejuvenation of aged skin. Photofacials, also known as broad band light (BBL) treatments and intense pulse light (IPL) treatments, are all available at Rejuvené.
INJECTABLES AND FILLERS Perhaps the most commonly used products and services at Rejuvené though, are under the category of injectables and fillers. Molecules, like the household name Botox, relax muscles allowing wrinkles to diminish and fade over time. Originally used to treat lazy eye, patients realized their wrinkles were fading alongside their eye treatment, and hence its use in dermatology. The molecule has since been used to treat cerebral palsy, urinary incontinence, migraine headaches, and a host of other conditions, making it one of the safest and most used treatments in medicine. Considered to be the best of cosmetic procedures, its effects are predictable with little downtime, low risk, and incredibly affordable. As we age, our faces lose the volume they once had; skin begins to sag resulting in a triangle shape to the face where most of the volume is weighted towards the chin area. Before the advent of fillers, fat or collagen was injected into the face to counteract this. Unfortunately, these effects were often unpredictable or looked unnatural, resulting in either allergic reactions or the appearance of bloated lips and cheekbones that scream surgical intervention. This is no longer the case with products like Juvederm and Restylane that utilize hyaluronic acid to volumize the face, restoring it to its youthful nature. Best of all, modern filler procedures are affordable, safe, quick, and downtime is minimal.

When to invite and when to sit tight!
Selecting the perfect guest list and minimizing collateral damage from those not invited is a nerve-racking event. Though we can’t take credit for this ingenious little formula, a friend of ours turned us onto it, and it has yet to fail anyone close to us who has used it in their quest to create the proper guest list. We hope that by following it, it can do the same for you!

Broadway Heights Voted Chico’s best lunch eight years in a row, Broadway Heights sits appropriately perched above Downtown Chico in the historic Phoenix Building at 300 Broadway Street. Recently purchased by local restaurateur, Scott Schulman, whose prior restaurant endeavors—Oy Vey Café and Hatchcover—still evoke a yearning nostalgia in Chico locals, Broadway Heights is once again elevating its offerings with expanded menus, a new happy hour, and the return of Chico-famous Desserts by Dawn. To top it off, the restaurant is also perfectly situated to deliver excellent rehearsal dinners and dinner parties. With seating for up to 100 people, Broadway Heights can accommodate small and large parties alike, whether you’re looking to have a private event tucked away in the restaurant’s banquet hall, or host a party for your office that makes use of the building’s entire top floor. With a reasonably priced catering menu, it’s easy to find the perfect option for your event, and the catering team is glad to put something together within your budget. Both sit-down service and buffet options are available and the restaurant’s on-site beer and wine license ensures that the party goes on just as long as you want it to. For those of us without a party to throw, Broadway Heights continues to be one of Downtown Chico’s best choices for lunch and dinner, and it’s no surprise why. Appetizers like their Thai basil chicken on romaine, Bidwell Bruschetta (mascarpone cheese, fig jam, roma tomatoes, and prosciutto on toasted focaccia bread), and creamy artichoke spinach dip are reasons in and of themselves to visit. The entree menu is just as delicious with salmon cakes, cajun meatloaf, and homemade chicken pot pie topping the list of customer favorites. Finally, those with a sweet tooth, or those looking to find theirs, will be glad to hear that the Desserts by Dawn menu is finally back at Broadway Heights! Made from scratch by restaurant manager, Dawn Fulks-Mcgaffick, the Xingu Black Beer fudge cake, an array of mouth-watering pies, and the new Chobbler (a cobbler-topped cheesecake) are the perfect way to complete (or start, if you’re like us) any meal.

Broadway Heights’ new Happy-2-Hours is a welcome addition to the downtown happy hour arena as well. With $5 off pizzas, $4 off appetizers, and a solid list of beer and wine specials, it’s the perfect place to meet friends or co-workers to let off some steam after a long day at work. A soon-to-be-launched cocktail menu will round out happy hour offerings in the near future with soju-infused drinks including an Electric Lemonade, Broadway Mary, 2nd Floor Mojito, Tropical Heights, and Cranberry Cocktail. Finally, Scott plans on bringing a bit of his home state of New York to Chico with Real New York Pastrami Fridays. Stop by on Friday the 19th (or any Friday thereafter) and get a taste of New York with a classically prepared, 2-week brined pastrami sandwich. For anyone that has had the privilege of trying one in New York, you’ll likely understand our excitement. YOUR BRIDAL BEAUTY QUESTIONS ANSWERED!
BY CASSANDRA PIERRO OWNER OF POWDER ROOM BEAUTY BAR
1. What are the benefits of airbrush foundation over traditional foundation?
4. What can I do to make sure my skin looks great for the big day?
Airbrush foundation will provide flawless full coverage while still looking natural. Most airbrush makeup formulas are longer lasting and more water resistant than traditional foundation. This means it is more likely to hold up the entire day through tears, sweat or oily skin.
Hydration and exfoliation! Drink lots of water, use moisturizer (even if you’re oily), and exfoliate using a combination of hydroxy acids and a gentle scrub. Be careful of over the counter products which can do more harm than good. Make sure to see an esthetician who can recommend the right products for your skin type. In addition, start any new products at least three months before the wedding so you’ll have time to see how your skin reacts.
2. What are my options for eyelashes? There are two main types of false lashes, strip lashes and individuals. Strip lashes look the most glamorous, but might feel heavy or start to come off in the inner corners. Individual lashes, which are applied in customized length and fullness, can be made to look natural or dramatic while still feeling comfortable. I recommend individual lashes because you won’t even feel them and will not have to worry about the corners coming up. 3. I love bold lip colors, but are they suitable for a “bridal” look? Bold lip colors are fun, but may not be the best choice since they tend to stand out on camera. Be wary of trendy colors. Most brides don’t want to look back at their wedding photos and say “what was I thinking with that lip color?!” On the other hand, choosing a lip color that is too nude will wash out your other features. I’d recommend using a timeless lipstick with just enough color to enhance your lips. If you just can’t go without your bold lip color on your wedding day, try a sheer version or gloss instead.
5. Should I go for glamorous “done-up” look, or keep it more natural? There are many factors to consider when deciding your makeup look, including the size of the wedding, time of day, location, and decor. For instance, if you are having a large evening wedding with a formal theme, I’d recommend glamourous makeup. If your wedding is an outdoor wedding with a country chic theme or garden party feel, natural makeup is more suitable. However, when going for a natural look, keep in mind that “wedding natural” is much more makeup than your everyday natural since it will enhance your features for the camera and guests.

BEATNIKS Opened in 2009 by Chicoans Mike Cress and Mike Huber (owner of Cal Java), Beatniks has grown considerably over the past seven years. As one of Chico’s busiest breakfast and lunch locales, the restaurant has become known for serving delicious dishes made of the freshest and highest quality ingredients, in a bright and friendly atmosphere. What started as a humble breakfast and coffee joint, has since evolved to offer lunch, art, a beautiful patio, and a well-designed banquet room that is perfectly suited for catered rehearsal dinners, office parties, and other private events. Though Beatniks is known for their breakfast and lunch offerings, their catering menu makes us wish they were normally open for dinner as well. From the pesto deviled eggs to the bacon wrapped dates, and the coq aux vin to the flatiron steak, the dinner catering menu is absolutely mouthwatering. With a full appetizer and dinner menu to choose from, there is no shortage of options here, and there plenty of menu items for vegetarians as well. Creating the perfect menu to satisfy your guests is a cinch and, with their an on-site beer and wine license, food and beverage service are both handled completely in-house. Catering a rehearsal dinner or event at Beatniks is not only delicious, but affordable too. Starting at just $25 per person, not only will your guests appreciate an incredible meal, but privacy as well, with the entire restaurant being exclusively theirs for the evening, and at no added cost to you. No need to compete with the volume or proximity of other tables here—simply sit down and enjoy the company of those you’re celebrating with. With room for up to 100 guests, the banquet room is truly the perfect location to host your event, and is provided complimentary with any catered dinner reservation.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF BEATNIKS
Conveniently located directly off of Highway 99 and on Highway 32, you can leave the complicated directions and GPS at home, as guests will find Beatniks without the need for either. Best of all, its central location is a straight shot to both Downtown Chico and most of Chico’s hotels, making continued celebration or turning in for the evening equally convenient.

WEDDING TIPS & TRICKS:
Greet Each Guest It may sound obvious, but it’s important to personally greet each and every guest at your wedding. Once the celebration is underway do your best to spend time with each person—whether that means chatting over a cocktail, visiting their table at dinner, or letting loose on the dance floor. Bridal Budget Breakdown A wedding has so many special details and elements that the planning process can seem quite intimidating. Planning ahead, knowing what to expect, and following a step-by-step schedule to choosing each element of your wedding will ease the process and make the event that much more fun in the end. Our opinion? Start with the budget first.
Costofwedding.com is probably the most effective resource for planning a realistic budget. The site allows you to select the area where you plan on having your wedding and will return the average rates that the most recent surveyed brides have paid for various services. In 2014, weddings in our Northern California area had an average cost of $25,000, and the average number of guests was around 135. MANAGING FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AFTER LOSING A SPOUSE TO DEATH OR DIVORCE Life as you’ve known it is never the same after losing a spouse to death or divorce. Although the two circumstances themselves are extremely different, the ensuing emotions can be similar. There are traditionally 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. All of which tend to cloud one’s current thought processes. Planning anything past dinner can seem utterly impossible. We’ve seen and worked with people through these situations and have summarized what we’ve learned into three important stages below:
Stage 1:Grief It’s important during this highly vulnerable, initial stage to make time to take care of yourself. Accepting help from others and seeking the emotional care you need will keep you sane. Focusing on your own health and faith can help keep your mind and body healthy. Financially: • Understand this is an emotional time, don’t make any sudden, irrevocable decisions • Prioritize immediate needs like cashflow and household bills
BY RENEE MICHEL, MBA AND JOE SWEENEY, CFP® FINANCIAL ADVISORS AT ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP
• Begin retitling your assets as instructed by your Attorney or CPA. In divorce, this can mean completing and using a QDRO (Qualified Domestic Relations Order) that instructs the division and acceptance of assets. Upon death, you will likely need copies of the death certificate and trust documents.
Stage 2:Growth In this stage, people begin to adjust to a “new normal.” They are able to find happiness in daily activities and might pick up a hobby. One is able to begin planning further out and feeling hopeful about their future. Financially: • You can do general life planning with your advisor on investments, taxes, insurance and estate intentions • Make decisions about where to live and what type of lifestyle you can afford • Talk with your children about money issues
Stage 3:Transformation
new interests and a plan for life without your spouse. People feel appreciation for life, even though it’s changed. Joy is possible, and one can grow in their compassion for others going through similar circumstances. Financially: • You can begin setting personal, long-term goals such as specific retirement income & charitable giving • Address your estate by titling accounts as TOD or in the name of your amended trust • You can feel better about investing in life experiences and new memories Losing a spouse, regardless of the circumstances, is hard. Always try and remember to be patient with yourself and those who are suffering too. There is no roadmap or set timeline; each person’s path is different. Surrounding yourself with a trusted team of advisors and friends is vital to your financial, physical and emotional health.
Transformation can take years to get to, but includes

Stay Active & Thrive! As we begin to transition into another season, we find our summer fun is almost behind us. Often times what makes summer so intriguing is that we typically look forward to getting out of our daily routine. Maybe it’s longer days, vacation time, social gatherings, and more time to get outside…it’s something different. As a health coach, and someone that’s constantly involved in the well-being and fitness of others, it’s an opportunity to enjoy and teach individuals about the benefits of getting outdoors through stand-up paddling aka: SUP. There is nothing better than getting out on a lake, river, or ocean and engaging your physical abilities while surrounded by nature and taking time out from the rest of the fast paced world... even in Chico. We have abundance in our area of fitness gyms, parks, and organizations, and they are fantastic. Everyone should find their ‘niche’ regarding maintaining a physical lifestyle because the reality is Americans are getting fatter and lazier, and the cost of healthcare is going up.

Watching the levels of physical and emotional capabilities of the human body during the Summer Olympics is inspiring. So you’re not an olympian? Take an interest in something that excites you and make the time to enroll in a class or try something different. For me, paddling was something I enjoyed doing and soon I was out at the forebay showing someone else that was observing how to do it themselves. Paddling involves using your core, your upper body, and it tests your balance. Do not let that last part scare you. Seven year olds can do it as well as 72 year olds! Some of the biggest health risks in more mature populations are gait imbalance and lack of core and leg strength; moving from a seated to standing position, even being able to get up and off of the floor. Learning to stand-up paddle engages you to find your feet, get comfortable being on a less rigid surface (water), and to breathe and enjoy the scenery. While there is still time to get outdoors, find something active to do, engage, and better yourself physically to help lead a healthier and more balanced life. DR. ife, mother, dean, neuroscientist—most would settle for any one of these titles; few could claim them all. Melissa Boeger counts each of these titles as an accomplishment in her life, but her greatest challenge was in finding another word: freedom. In her search, she has built a successful business, working part-time from home, traveling the world with her family, and teaching others to do the same.

ingredients but manufactured in the U.S. The quality, formulations and breadth of the catalogue including detox, weightloss, skincare, cosmetics, athletic performance, baby care, and more, made this a no-brainier. Mo was confident people wanted what Arbonne had, so she followed the system of sharing Arbonne with friends, family and soon a growing network of referrals. After just 2 years, her business grew exponentially. She reached Arbonne’s fourth level, Regional Vice President RVP, and earned the Mercedes Benz cash bonus program, bringing the first Arbonne Mercedes to Chico. But to Mo, this was about so much more than a car. RVP meant the plan to one day replace her career was now realized. Retired from neuroscience in 2014 she hasn’t looked back. Mo has nearly 500 business owners in her organization, each with a different goal she is determined to help them accomplish. Her success in selling product, mentoring a team, and helping others do the same, has earned her the highest level in Arbonne, Executive National Vice President. The business has given her what she calls health, wealth and time. “First and foremost I’m a mom with 5 kids! I have to show them that you CAN have it all: career, family, time, joy and a rockin’ income. But you can’t wish for it, you have to work for it and that’s all I did,” says Mo.
“YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL, YOU JUST CAN’T HAVE IT ALL AT THE SAME TIME.” This “advice” was given to Melissa “Mo”
Boeger, when she, like many, found herself struggling to balance family and career. Living in Forest Ranch, a son to care for, a demanding but gratifying job as a neuroscientist at UC Davis, Mo struggled with how to give her best to both. Seven years of four hour commutes, 10–16 hour days, meant the decision was obvious. It was time to look for work closer to home and get more time with her family.
She picked up a teaching position at Chico State but, to fill the pay gap, she began working part time as a caregiver advocate and a dean at a private university. Mo was closer to home, but her new jobs still left little time for family and no added freedom. With another child, this time a daughter, Mo knew it was time to look for opportunities without long commutes, grueling workweeks, and missed milestones. Her best friend, Tiffany, a stay at home mom, suggested building a business with Arbonne 62

International. Well versed in the link between toxicity and brain health, Mo was instantly attracted to Arbonne’s philosophy of pure, safe products, but when Tiffany explained Arbonne’s “home-based” business model, Mo replied, “Aww, Tiff, I have a real job.” To which Tiffany said, “You work constantly and have no time with your kids. How’s that ‘real job’ working for ya?” Hit hard by the question, Mo agreed to take a peek afterall. That’s when Tiffany introduced her to a group of consultants. They were doctors, business owners, even professors who, just like her, were looking for freedom and financial independence, and chose Arbonne as their vehicle. She listened to what they said and realized if even half of it were true, the opportunity would be worth it. Unlike many businesses, Arbonne has a system where consultants work to help each other succeed. Thriving in this mentorship model, Mo’s leaders showed her how to build a successful business from the ground up. Working just 10-15 hours per week, alongside her full-time career, she built her business with every intention of someday making Arbonne her only profession. And why not, selling Arbonne just made sense. The 36 year old company focused on products formulated in Europe from botanical
Mo’s Arbonne business stretches to Canada, New Zealand and soon to Taiwan. She gushes over her team saying, “They are dreamers, but disciplined, focused, hungry, fun, smart, and hopeful. They are why I wake up excited every day and why I count my blessing twice each night. I’m more committed than ever to helping them achieve their dreams.” Mo was lucky enough to marry her soulmate and college boyfriend, Cade, to whom she credits much of her success. “Cade makes me want to leave a legacy with my life. He sets goals with me, tracks my progress, and holds me accountable. He loves me and he believes in me so I want to make him proud! And don’t get me started on the kids! At ages 8 months to 13 years old, they are my WHY,” says Mo. Undeniably a successful entrepreneur, Mo is quick to mention that she isn’t anything special and that any committed, focused, and determined individual could do what she’s done, and she’s more than glad to help them do just that. The following seven women, all in Mo’s team, have reached or surpassed the major milestone of Regional VP, building their own international businesses while teaching others to do the same. They come from different walks of life, each with a compelling story. To learn more about Arbonne products or the business, visit www.arbonne.com, and look for a consultant near you!

I realized I had nothing to lose except for the baby weight I was carrying after my son was born. I quickly fell in love with the products and with my results, and people couldn’t stop asking me what I was doing to lose weight so how could I not do this? Arbonne has a 45-day money back guarantee so, just like me, people instantly saw it was the real deal. Plus, what’s the risk in jumping into something that can make you healthier and cleaner right!? I appreciated the fact that she was so knowledgeable but not pushy about the products or the business. Her true enthusiasm was apparent. To be honest, I wasn’t actively seeking out a change, but circumstances kept putting Arbonne into my life. After coming to the conclusion that these “run-ins” had to be more than just coincidence, I chose to pursue the business opportunity further. I experienced improved health with Arbonne’s botanically based products and had a firm belief in their efficacy. With products this good, I knew Arbonne’s business model was worth exploring. I often say, “Arbonne found me, but I chose Arbonne.”
I first learned about the Arbonne products at a vendor event in Chico. I purchased the Arbonne Baby Care for my daughter after I heard that Arbonne follows European standards. My daughter was developing hives with every other store brand product we used, Arbonne was the only brand that worked. My husband and I were thrilled and changed all our household brands to Arbonne. I was later invited to a home presentation where I met Mo, who shared the business opportunity with me. Frequent cuts in education made it an easy decision to become a consultant if for nothing but to supplement my income. I never could have imagined becoming a National Vice President with a growing global business! It’s not the life I always dreamed of, it’s better.
TANYA POWELL Profession: Mortgage lender for 12 years (now retired) Joined Arbonne: March, 2011 I was looking for a change and fell in love with the products. It took me 14 months to reach Regional VP, and it allowed me the chance to build a significant income with a very flexible schedule and low investment, but what really convinced me were the people and culture of Arbonne. The people have integrity and are eager to help each other. They come from different backgrounds, are passionate about life, and super fun! They have become like family to me. 63

Coming from a holistic health background, I knew consumers were demanding cleaner products and Arbonne was a company that was abiding by those standards for 36 years. It made perfect sense to me. People are tired of the junk in most products, and Arbonne provides safer alternatives in dozens of categories of consumable products. I decided to skip finishing my registered dietician certification and jump in with Arbonne instead. In all my time of owning businesses before this, none have offered the time leveraging that Arbonne has. I knew I was ready to work smarter, not harder, and to truly build a legacy for my family.
After our first son was born, we needed to fill a gap for me to leave my job in education and stay home. Mo offered me a sample of the anti-aging line to help with my cystic acne and, a week later, she followed up about the sample. She listened to me gripe about not having enough money as a stay at home mom and offered me the opportunity to come take a peek at Arbonne as a business.I happily agreed. When comparing companies and seeing that Arbonne was full of consumable products people were already using anyway, I jumped in! This business has changed my life. I’m not the same person I was 5 years ago and, now as a mom of two, my Arbonne business allows me to be a parent and a provider.
I investigated the products, company and compensation plan before I knew Arbonne was right for me and, ultimately with a daughter heading off to college in a few years, it turned out to be exactly what we needed. I continue my family law practice alongside my Arbonne business and would encourage others who are interested in joining to do the same. Put away your hesitations, ignore the naysayers, and allow yourself to imagine the possibilities. I did, and just by following the system and mentoring my team, I now have a life of “get to’s” not “have to’s.”

MEN’S HEALTH T E S T O S T E R O N E : T H E K E Y T O H E A LT H & V I TA L I T Y
There is a growing body of scientific data that testosterone plays a vital role in a man’s health. Testosterone can exert a profound influence on sexual function, bone density, fat metabolism, mood states, mental acuity, energy levels, and physical appearance. There is nothing that happens in the male body that is not enhanced, modulated, or directly regulated by testosterone. Without testosterone, a man’s physiology becomes transformed into a landscape of disease and frailty, devoid of masculine strength, health, passion, drive, joy, and vitality. How a man looks and feels has more to do with his capacity to produce testosterone than any other single factor. In matters of health, testosterone is a man’s best friend. With every incremental drop in testosterone there is a corresponding rise in the risk of disease. A sure physical sign that a man has a testosterone deficiency is lack of drive, fatigue, slowing metabolism (all factors leading to weight gain). Being overweight increases a man’s risk of 35 major diseases. Most experts would agree that the years of vitality for the healthy male are between the ages of 20 and 40. This is when we have reached our reproductive prime. We have the least amount of disease, we have the greatest amount of vitality, we climb the corporate ladder the best, and life goes on for most of us uneventfully. When the forties and fifties hit, we start to look old and feel old. We begin to notice a tire around the middle that didn’t used to be there. When we go to the gym, instead of feeling pumped and invigorated, we’re 66

sore, tired and fatigued, and it takes two to three days to recover from the exertion. Drive and competitive edge dwindles and we feel easily overwhelmed and less able to shoulder the stressors of life. No matter how hard we watch our diet and exercise, we don’t seem to be able to lose weight. We start to feel more fatigued and exhausted, and become more vulnerable to depression and anxiety. A decline in our stress tolerance causes us to become more easily overwhelmed with stress. Our libido begins to decline and our sexual performance deteriorates. 50 percent of 40-year-old men experience difficulty in attaining and maintaining an erection. When we go to the doctor’s office we are told our cholesterol is starting to go up and our blood pressure needs treatment with medication, yet these changes are rarely correlated, as they should be, with the decline of sex hormones as the root cause. If you are unable to sufficiently generate your own testosterone optimally, a personalized hormone restoration program may be the best option for you. Once testosterone has been restored toward optimal, most men can expect to lose a pound of fat per week on average. The beauty of this approach to health and weight loss is that it is permanent and sustainable, as long as you remain nutritionally and hormonally sound.

A New Reason To

Being born in a Thai refugee camp is not your typical start for a dentist. In the case of Maichou Yang, this was the introduction of life. At the age of three she came with her parents to the United States where she saw her fair share of struggles such as the shift to a completely different culture as well as not being English speaking immigrants. Growing up in Oroville, Dr. Yang aspired to enter the medical field in hopes of aiding in broader health care access and creating comfortable environments for patients of all backgrounds. She received her undergraduate education at Chico State and went on to attend the University of California at San Francisco, where she shifted her focus to dentistry. Having worked as an office assistant at a dental office in Chico, she knew many of the faces in Butte County. Shortly after graduating she found her home at Hanosh and Hunter Dental Group in Paradise. Her goals beyond her field expertise revolve around maintaining the confidence of patients. Her background has given her a great deal of empathy, thus allowing her to develop multiple methods of communication and genuine care for patient needs. Dentistry is often a male-dominated profession, but for many, it is a much more comfortable experience to get their dental treatment from a female. She is excited to work with such an enthusiastic team of experts that share so many of her values. For those who don’t know, Hanosh and Hunter is a full service dental office that prides itself in making sure patients are comfortable and taken care of. The team understands that dentistry has a stigma for being a daunting experience for most to the point that some avoid going altogether. If you are someone who struggles with this anxiety, they have multiple options for finding relaxation from nitrous oxide to oral sedation. Taking care of the patient does not end there: they do full screenings and offer help in any way they can in-house. Patients will also be happy to know that Hanosh and Hunter use only top-of-the-line dental equipment to emphasize quality of treatment.
The landscaping is still being completed, but the office hopes to hold its open house this coming October with the complete project. Hanosh and Hunter Dental Group is looking to become the face of Paradise dentistry for both cosmetic and more extensive needs. With Dr. Yang on board and a fresh new building, they are definitely meeting that goal.

Those who have passed by the Holiday shopping center on Skyway in Paradise may have noticed the mid-sized construction site behind Wells Fargo. The building itself is finally finished and after checking out the interior myself, I was extremely impressed. As someone who has anxiety about dental care, I found the lounge to be an elegant and comfortable place to be. With natural lighting pouring from the large windows, the space feels open and breathable. An electronic photo frame streamed various pictures of the staff with their families as well as in fun poses and wearing themed costumes together.

Wounds can take many forms, from a simple scrape or a deep gash to a surgical incision or medical condition. Whether your wound is small or large, taking care of it is critical for overall health, especially for those who suffer from diabetes or other conditions that make healing more difficult. Simple abrasions and minor cuts can be managed by most people at home using basic wound care. Use soap and water to clean the wound. Avoid hydrogen peroxide, which can cause irritation. Apply a clean, sterile bandage to keep the wound covered and help prevent infection. If you get a puncture wound or step on a rusty nail, see your doctor immediately as you may need a tetanus shot. How do I know if I need specialized wound care? Generally speaking, a wound should be completely healed or show significant signs of healing within two weeks. But if the wound is infected, or just won’t heal, it’s time to call your doctor or seek specialized wound services. Factors that may contribute to poor wound healing include diabetes, neuropathy, obesity, infection, immunosuppression, or inadequate nutrition. For some long-term wounds, a person may be told or think that amputation is the only option, but better options do exist. Specialized wound treatment and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Our rural community is fortunate to have a specialized care center for non-healing 68

wounds, ostomies, and hyperbaric treatment. Enloe’s Wound/Ostomy & Hyperbaric Center provides up-to-date approaches to wound healing, while offering support and individualized specialty care for unique medical issues. Physicians, nurses, and staff skilled in wound management and hyperbaric medicine treat open, hard-toheal wounds of all types, including pressure ulcers, burns, grafts, flaps, skin tears, and difficult leg wounds, among other wounds. This state-of-the-art center also offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds. Oxygen therapy is one of the most advanced and effective treatments available to treat hard-to-heal wounds and other conditions. It delivers 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized environment. The oxygenrich blood promotes healing, particularly for chronic wounds in patients with diabetes. Treatments increase the body’s own healing factors, stimulate new blood vessel growth in wound tissue, assist with tissue regeneration, healing, and helps to stimulate and maintain healthy tissue.

BEAUTY Q&A P O S T S U M M E R S K I N R E PA I R
As summer slowly comes to an end, many of us find ourselves seeing new freckles and sunspots in the mirror. Even the most diligent SPF users and re-appliers may see these effects from the sun. Our skin obtains its natural pigment from melanin produced by melanocytes in the deepest layer of our skin’s epidermis, the basal layer. When melanocytes are triggered, they overproduce melanosomes containing a darker melanin called eumelanin, which climb their way up to the surface skin cells, causing hyperpigmentation. This process is our skin’s natural way of protecting itself from future UV damage. What are other causes of hyperpigmentation? While UV exposure is the most common culprit for freckles and sunspots, there are many other factors to consider. Genetics If you are predisposed to freckles or are fair skinned, UV protection is key. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 daily, and as high as SPF 50 if you are anticipating prolonged sun exposure. Reapply every two hours or after swimming, seek shade when possible, and wear a brimmed hat wide enough to shade your shoulders and décolleté. Hormones can also contribute to uneven skin coloring. The most common form is called melasma, commonly called the “pregnancy mask.” Melasma affects not only women who are pregnant or using oral contraception, it also is seen in women experiencing hormonal fluctuations. Acne When treating acne, the focus isn’t solely on the active breakout. Many over the counter products are extremely astringent and can strip the skin’s natural lipid barrier. Great care needs to be taken during the healing process, which is unique to each individual’s skin, to prevent permanent scarring. Post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation can last months after a breakout but will fade with the correct treatments and a proper, consistent regimen.
How do I repair the damage? Once the origin of your hyper-pigmentation is diagnosed, a treatment plan will be prescribed. Peels are the most common form of treatment for brightening the skin. Peels remove old, keratinized skin cells, speeding up the skin’s natural cell turnover rate and allowing better product penetration. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) My preference for treatment includes glycolic (sugar cane derived) and lactic (sour milk) acid peels. These water soluble acids work by breaking down the intercellular bond between skin cells, making the exfoliation process more effective. The moisturizing properties of AHAs increase amounts of hyaluronic acid occurring naturally in the skin to help plump from within. Beta Hydroxy Acid Peels These are a great choice for those experiencing breakouts as they calm erythema and inflammation. Beta hydroxy is a fat soluble acid that works by penetrating at the base of hair follicles, causing clogged pores to open and bacteria to be destroyed. Enzyme Peels A popular choice for a wide range of skin types. Derived primarily from fruit like pineapple and papaya, these enzymes contain protease, which gently digests keratinized protein. These peels are safe and gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.

STABILITY BALL WALKOUTS
OBLIQUE PLANK
Bird-Dogs are a great exercise to activate your Erector Spinae group. Start on all fours. Extend one arm and one leg in opposition, reaching fingers and toes in their respective directions. Make sure your belly button is pulled in (toward the spine) and complete a full exhale with every rep. Repeat with opposite arm and leg combination. Do 3 sets of 20 reps or 3 1-minute intervals.
Stability Ball Walkouts are a great exercise for proprioception (the body’s self-awareness). Start in a seated position. Walk your feet out to the point where your back, neck, and head are now resting on the ball. Complete a bridge (lifting pelvis toward the ceiling, squeezing the glutes), holding the bridge, walk yourself back up to the starting position. Do 3 sets of 20 reps or (3) 1-minute intervals.
The Oblique Plank targets the oblique muscles of the abdomen, but is also a full-body isometric exercise. Start in a normal plank position, rotate to one side, stacking your feet (bottom leg in front of top), keeping both elbows on the floor and your neck long, pull belly button in, lift hips toward ceiling and complete a slow controlled exhale. Do (3) 1-minute intervals, 30 seconds on each side.

Corrective Jaw Surgery Have you ever wondered why your teeth don’t fit together just right? Do you have trouble chewing your food or talking? You may have a problem with your jaw. There can be several different causes of misalignment of teeth and jaw. There could be a simple crowding of the teeth that causes teeth to be crooked. This can often be corrected by an orthodontist who has received two to three years of specialty training after dental school. There could be a greater problem such as the jaw bones not lining up. The lower jaw may bite too far forward, backward or the upper and lower jaw may be very different in size. As children grow, an orthodontist can provide non-surgical interventions that can correct minor jaw discrepancies. After growth has been completed, which can be from the teenage years to young adult, the jaw is set where it is. As a grown adult, the only way to correct the alignment of the jaw is through corrective jaw surgery. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon spends four to six years after completion of dental school in an accredited residency program that specializes in surgery. They are trained to perform these procedures in the safety of an operating room in a hospital or a surgery center. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon often works with an orthodontist to correct the alignment of someone’s jaw and allowing them to bite correctly. If you think that you or a loved one has a problem with their jaw, schedule an appointment with your local oral and maxillofacial surgeon. DR. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. The sound of the metronome repeats. The steady rhythm helps the pianist keep time. The musician concentrates on the notes, simultaneously keeping time as according to the time signature. The song is over; the musician has played to the best of his ability. 17-year old Diego Bustamante has dedicated years to his passion for piano. He began playing at the young age of seven. His parents observed his interest in music and soon enrolled him in music classes. Ten years later, he continues to practice piano every day. When he isn’t taking lessons from his teacher Dr. Robert Bowman, Diego is playing at home. Diego is a frequent performer; he plays piano at events varying from concerts with other young musicians to soloing with the Paradise Symphony. “My favorite aspects of performing are having the opportunity to share my art and trying to play at my best each time,” Diego states. Not only does Diego dedicate much of his time to performing, he has also created his own album! Diego was receiving constant encouragement to put out a CD. Lucky for him, he has two good friends who have all the software he needed, and soon enough, he began the project! The genres of music Diego plays are classical and ragtime. Classical and ragtime are most often
separated into two different categories, but Diego wanted to mix both styles. Although the songs recorded were not original pieces, Diego’s dedication to his craft made the album his own masterpiece. When I asked Diego if he wanted to play piano the rest of his life, he grinned from ear to ear and said, “Of course!” That’s the phenomenal thing about discovering your calling. Once you find it, you want to spend any and every moment you have devoted to it. His advice to someone who wants to learn piano is, “Be sure to challenge yourself with pieces that will help you advance your skills.” In the future, Diego aspires to receive a master’s degree in piano performance and become a concert pianist. In May of 2017, Diego will have the opportunity to perform with the North State Symphony. He competed at the North State Audition and, won the competition! His award? The opportunity to solo with the symphony! Diego has chased his passion and followed his dreams. His gift of performing piano has been a part of his life for years, and it will continue to be a part of his life for many more to come. Every second of each song Diego has played has led him to where he is today. “Piano has given me a purpose and a direction in life,” he says.
THE CHICO EXPERIENCE WEEK
PHOTO COURTESY OF SUE ANDERSON/ CSU,CHICO
The month of October has always been a busy one in Chico, and unsurprisingly so. Between the cooler temperatures, art-inspiring color changes throughout town, and the heightened pace of life brought by returning students, October seems to be a month when folks can’t help but want to spend their time outdoors enjoying it all. Over the past seven years, CSU, Chico has worked to better organize the events that take place throughout our community in October into a more manageable timeframe that can be enjoyed by residents, students, and their visiting families alike. Originally launched in 2010, The Chico Experience Week is a campuscommunity celebration that has grown to encompass the majority of Butte County’s October festivities over a 10-day period. With more than 90 events taking place between October 7–16, The Chico Experience Week will showcase the many entertaining, artistic, recreational, education, and civic-minded activities that take place throughout Chico and its surrounding communities. Best of all, these events will take place during what is arguably the most comfortable time of year, temperature-wise, in Chico. This translates to the best possible time to ride bikes through Bidwell Park, shop downtown Chico, and enjoy the offerings of our many amazing restaurants, all while participating in some of the most anticipated events of the year. Off campus, The Chico Experience Week will include staple events in downtown Chico like the Downtown Harvest Sidewalk Sale (October 7–8) and the Parade of Lights (October 15). For foodies, the Sierra Oro Farm Trail’s Passport Weekend (October 7–8) provides one of the most comprehensive (and delicious) farm-to-table experiences in Butte County, with 33 of the county’s finest farms and wineries opening their doors to visitors for two full days. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s sought-after Oktoberfest will complete its two-weekend stretch on October 7 and 8 as well. For those looking to support a good
cause while raising their heart rate a bit, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place on October 8. For those looking to fill their soul with laughter, The Producers begins its time at Chico Theater Company on October 14. The month will be just as busy on campus as it is off. Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a three-day reunion, alongside the annual Family Weekend BBQ (October 8), Greek Week (October 10–16), and Golden Grad festivities (October 14–15). Chico Alumni will host its annual fall mixer (October 13), the Young Cattleman’s Association will put on its 5k run, and quite a few performing arts and athletics events will also be available on campus throughout the 10-day period. With so many events to choose from, truly there are few times in the year as well-suited to having friends and family visit and discover all that our piece of Northern California has to offer than during Chico Experience Week.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS YEAR’S EXCITING LINEUP, VISIT THE CHICO EXPERIENCE WEEK ONLINE AT WWW.THECHICOEXPERIENCEWEEK.COM, OR PICK UP A POCKET EVENT GUIDE AT 238 NORMAL AVENUE IN DOWNTOWN CHICO. Bird cage succulent planter Succulents are the plant of the moment! Drought tolerant, low maintenance, and so very versatile—what’s not to love? You don’t need a green thumb to create something beautiful with these little friends. We found this lovely vintage gold bird cage at Eighth & Main in Chico, and just knew that a touch of green would bring it back to life. Here’s what you’ll need: • Bird cage (old or new, it’s up to you!) • Assortment of succulents • Cardboard • Sand • Sheet moss

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit the bottom of your birdcage and line it with a thin layer of sand. This will help to absorb excess water. Line your cage with a bit of sheet moss, then begin to place your succulents, loosening the soil around their roots and adding more soil as needed. Once your succulents are planted, you may want to add additional sheet moss to cover any areas of exposed soil and keep it from spilling through the slots. If your birdcage allows, let your succulents poke through the slots for a more “undone” look. Your succulents will not require much water, just a nice soak about once a week, and will tolerate either sun or shade. Inside or out, this addition to your home is sure to make you smile!
