Why major in Biology? As a biology major, you’ll gain broad exposure to biology as a discipline to help you enter professional or graduate school or pursue other science careers. Biology at UPIKE provides a one-of-a-kind experience in a small class-size setting. Most upper-level courses and labs have no more than 24 students enrolled, which will allow you to develop close professional relationships with faculty. If you can dream it, UPIKE can help you develop the tools and skills necessary to achieve it.
Program Distinctives UPIKE provides experiential learning opportunities through onand off-campus research and science internships. Additionally, you can travel to places like Belize, Arizona or the Gulf Coast, as well as explore interdisciplinary courses such as the Nature of Science, Religion and Science, or Religion and Nature. We offer courses associated with the basic foundations of life and health, such as anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, histology, immunology, molecular biology, neurology and physiology. We also prepare students for careers concerned with the environment through courses such as animal behavior, botany, ecology, entomology, field methods in ecology, ornithology and vertebrate zoology.

Why major in Film & Media Arts? UPIKE’s Film and Media Arts program focuses on film and digital media. As a student, you’ll learn to integrate digital technologies with traditional forms of artistic methods of expression through images. Why minor in Global Health?
Why are some communities “healthy” while others seem to suffer disproportionately? How can we help build a culture of health across all communities? While minoring in global health, you will learn to recognize the importance of cultural belief systems and how they influence personal and communal health. Through coursework and community networking, you will learn to interpret health policy and identify areas of healthcare change. Students will learn to analyze the different forms of health disparities and ways social systems affect health outcomes. The minor engages students in direct research and community-based projects that use data to promote evidence-informed health practices. The minor can complement any major and prepares students for careers in organizations with health-focused missions. For students intending to pursue careers in the health professions, the minor offers a distinctive credential in social, ethical and intercultural competencies.

Majoring in history at UPIKE helps you examine the causes and consequences of events and their impact on human experience from a variety of perspectives. You’ll learn how to analyze written, oral, visual and material evidence as well as develop communication skills and think critically. Program Distinctives History majors at UPIKE have participated in archaeological work in Israel and even the archaeological reconstruction of 3,000-year-old pottery. Students have served as guides at archaeological exhibitions, performed historical preservation surveys prior to the construction of the Coal Building at UPIKE and taken classes in China. As a history student, you can conduct archival research and will have considerable opportunities to travel, making history a hands-on experience. You can also participate in The Washington Center seminars and internships at Kentucky’s capitol.

Why major in Mathematics?
Mathematics is a versatile major that links well with other majors including art, biology, business, chemistry and education. As a mathematics major, you’ll get extensive practice solving complex problems and using critical-thinking skills in computation, concepts and proof. You’ll come to understand how and why computations work. Majoring in mathematics gives you tools for lifelong learning and a wide variety of careers. Advances in astronomy, chemistry and physics rely heavily upon mathematical ideas, and the biological sciences increasingly use mathematical models. Why minor in Music?
Whether you’re interested in majoring in art, biology or business and desire to develop your musical talent while at UPIKE, consider pursuing your musical passion while enhancing your studies by minoring in music. UPIKE’s music minor offers three tracks for students to engage in advanced musical study – vocal performance, piano performance and music history. As a graduate, you’ll possess critical thinking skills, utilize techniques for playing your chosen instrument and be able to read the language of music. Minoring in music can also help you learn methods for teaching instrumental, piano and vocal music.
Program Distinctives Students studying music can join dynamic performing ensembles such as the UPIKE Concert Choir and UPIKE Marching Band. Scholarship money is available for both ensembles. Students may play keyboard and wind instruments as well as develop their singing ability and study music history. Additionally, private piano lessons and voice lessons are offered for one credit hour to students seeking to develop their talent. Lessons are open to beginners and those with experience. Private practice facilities and Steinway B concert grand pianos are available to students.

Why major in Performing Arts?
The performing arts program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences Humanities Division. The emphasis in music is designed to provide students with a strong but flexible degree option. It involves more courses than a minor and focuses the student’s study in music within the performing arts major. It is responsive to students who want to perform and study music while also preparing for other career tracks or students who want to pursue a double major; this curriculum is situated within the context of a broader liberal arts background. Courses in the music curriculum are designed to strengthen student’s appreciation for music, skills in performance, musical literacy, research and arts advocacy. Why major in Psychology?
The science of psychology is defined as the study of behavior and mental processes. Psychology is a multifaceted science concerned with understanding topics as diverse as human physiology, sensory perception and adaptation, interpersonal relationships and psychiatric disorders. Opportunities for work as a psychologist are expanding in number and scope. The recognition that psychology can address many of the major problems facing society has led to increased opportunities for careers in fields such as social services, public health, ecology, education and the legal system. Because employers in different industries seek the analytical and problem-solving skills instilled by a psychology degree, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UPIKE will prepare you for a career in a variety of service and business-related fields.

Why major in Religious Studies? As a religious studies major at UPIKE, you’ll focus on understanding the Bible and religious diversity. Religious studies are a way of organizing the oldest and deepest human concerns about the meaning of life. Minoring in theatre at UPIKE is not only fun but provides skills that employers seek out and highly value. Why major in Accounting? If you have strong quantitative skills, are detail-oriented and enjoy problem solving, then accounting is a good fit for you. Accounting has long been called the language of business because it’s used by firms to communicate financial and economic information. By majoring in business administration-accounting at UPIKE, you will become proficient using Microsoft Excel, learn how to prepare tax returns and analyze financial data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 139,900 new accounting and auditing jobs will open up by 2026. This equates to a 10 percent growth rate.
Program Distinctives Upper-level accounting courses tend to have smaller class sizes and closeknit learning environments. You’ll be encouraged to work with classmates and form study groups. Nursing courses include extensive hands-on skills acquisition and clinical experiences in addition to learning in the classroom.

As a nursing student, you will take courses in health assessment, nursing fundamentals, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, obstetrical and pediatric nursing, and mental health nursing.
Initially, most graduates will begin practice as a generalist Registered Nurse in various areas (medicalsurgical, intensive care, obstetrics, emergency, etc.) of acute care. With additional education and experience, nurses can pursue careers in nursing education, primary practice and anesthesia.
The Elliott School of Nursing has a state-of-the-art skills lab where students are taught and engage in hands-on skills training. The simulation center allows for a realistic immersion in simulated situations, using high-fidelity simulators. Simulation allows students to practice using equipment and implementing skills they have learned in a safe environment without fear of harming someone. This results in a more confident student in the clinical area. Students have the opportunity to apply for paid externships available at area hospitals.

Program Distinctives UPIKE’s social work program has a strong field education component, which means you’ll gain at least 400 hours of real experience practicing social work in the community under the supervision of a social worker. Field education is geared toward your personal interests and may include medical settings, mental health agencies, substance abuse treatment providers, offender programs, child advocacy centers, child protective services, homeless shelters, school settings and crisis centers.
