On October 24, 2021, UP BehSoc published an informative post for Mental Health Month, focusingprimarilyonthediscussion of productivity and how the COVID19 pandemichasaffectedourperspectivesand lived experiences on the topic. With the tagline “Pwede na bang magpahinga?” the writeupexploredthepossibleconsequences of tying one’s selfworth to their productivity, overworking, and consequently, burnout.Andwhatwecando to continue working as the pandemic progresses, while also assuring us that our own coping mechanisms for survival, includingworkingoneselftoexhaustion, are valid.Intheintroduction, famousquotations used by students on a daily basis were included, such as: “Anong padayon padayon? Pagod na ako,” “Kailangan kong maging productive. Bawal ang magpahinga,” “Gusto ko na humimlay.” It then went on to discuss the concept of productivity from the perspectives of psychology, sociology, and anthropology, giving readers a deeper understanding of this human behavior through a transdisciplinaryapproach. byIsabelaDorothyTolentino|October24,2022

Thewritersalsoexpressedtheirthou ‘pandemicproductivity’,saying: “It i to feel the urge to be productive du pandemic because humans are n inclined to work towards a goal and our social conditions push us to grapple with adverse life circumstances to survive. However, to a certain extent, this culture of productivity ingrained in us becomes toxic, relentless, and damaging to our overall wellbeing.” by: Kristine Nopre, Daguimol, Roselyn Montera, and Barbra BlessVeladiez by: Marie Eclarin and RicellePalcone

Rather, it was emphasized that larger systemsinsociety, asexacerbatedbythe COVID19 pandemic, work interdependently to make it simply impossibletotreatmentalhealthatthe individuallevel.Theorganizationcallsfor government interventions including substantial support for mental health education, professionals, andfacilitiesas we recognize that collective action is muchmoreproductiveandsustainable.

Written by Ezra Turla, Stella Crisologo, andMarielleSalas, thestatementaimed to reconcile the gaps between the mainstream (alternatively, outdated) approachintacklingmentalhealth(e.g., through words of affirmations, Filipino culture that bypasses valid arguments) that further stigmatizes mental health issues and places the burden on the individual.
