to the first issue of Wrapped - Community Survival Guide for Winter Season. Wrapped is a community magazine, which has been developed by a talented group of individuals who are part of a Work for the Dole programme. The people involved in making this project come to life are not professional writers or graphic designers. Each contributor has, over the course of the past 6 months, gained skills within Microsoft Word, Adobe Indesign and Adobe Photoshop as part of this programme. Participants also learn other work-like skills such as meeting and exceeding expectations and deadlines, punctuality, accepting constructive criticism and also being evaluated as if it were an employment situation. We have had approximately 20 people in our activity over each week and everyone has contributed, whether it be in layout, editing, proof-reading or researching. I feel extremely lucky and proud to have been a part of this programme and have learned just as much from the participants as they have from me. We hope that you enjoy reading the issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.

FRED’S VAN
Helping the hungry and homeless
F
red’s Van makes it their goal to provide comfort, friendship, and care without judgement to some of the most vulnerable people in our community. The project was started in the late 1980s when Vinnies Youth voulunters, led by by Catherine O’Connell and Peter Barry, began distributing food at various squats from the back of an old station wagon. One night, the station wagon broke down and had to be pushed off the road. A group of visiting Lions International members witnessed this and were so impressed with the community spirit that they decided to fund the project.
Named for Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Fred’s Van holds his request that ‘we should take responsibility for the people who have too many needs and not enough rights’ at the heart of everything they do. With permission from the Adelaide City Council, Fred’s Van then began operating out of an old shed in Symonds Place, using Page 6 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
a portable barbecue in a laneway to serve people in need. Fred’s Van continued to expand and led to the funding, by Lions International, of a kitchen complex at the St Vincent de Paul Family Centre in Hawthorn. Although they still provide the same hearty meals and community spirit, they have added warm blankets, clothing, vouchers, books, and social support to their roster of services. The organisation also supplies referals to a range of other community and Government services. They now opperate from eight sites across Adelaide and two regional sites in Port Lincoln and Port Pirie, this community service is delivered through the hard work and dedication of more than 500 volunteers, rain, hail, or shine. Fred’s Van volunteers are a ‘community of purpose’, comprising of a diverse number of engaged and humble individuals. Many volunteers are also extremely involved as community managers, fundraisers, and organisers.
In the words of a volunteer working in Adelaide’s city center, “To me Fred’s Van is a positive way of giving back something, be it a mug of soup, a barbecue sausage in bread, coffee, tea and chocolate drinks, a blanket and particularly a willing ear to listen to our ‘street friends’ who although not necessarily living on the street, are certainly worse off than me. Although the constraints on my time are at times heavy, I can always make some time for Fred’s Van.”
“
Some statistics about the unlucky people in our lucky country •
Half of all welfare agencies reported a growth in demand for food relief services during the 2016 calendar year.
•
85,000 people seek food relief services in South Australia every month.
•
One third of them are children.
•
Almost half will be turned away.
Volunteers are giving hope to those who may feel hopeless, making their lives a little easier. It’s a way of building relationships and trust, helping to break down the barriers.
The sentiment is echoed by everyone who volunteers their time, effort, and donations to work on Fred’s Van. It is important that volunteers have a genuine heart to assist hungry people in a way that doesn’t patronise them or their situation. “Volunteers are giving hope to those who may feel hopeless, making their lives a little easier. It’s a way of building relationships and trust, helping to break down the barriers.” In this, Fred’s Van volunteers certainly succeed. For more information on Fred’s Van, including locations, timetable, and how to volunteer, please contact the coordinator on 8112 8720 or visit www.vinnies.org.au.

Who needs charity? The prices of essentials like food, health, education, housing, utilities and transport have climbed so much in recent years that people who are already struggling are susceptible to sudden bill shock and financial disadvantage. The current economic climate means people are turning to charity who would never have dreamed of seeking such support in the past. So it’s not just traditionally vulnerable groups such as the homeless seeking food relief, but also the aged, single parents and the working poor.

Winter is here and it is also flu season. No one wants to catch flu and suffer in agony the painful symptoms, which can be deadly. Wrapped shares some basic information and history on the influenza virus as well as some useful tips to help you prevent the flu and stay healthy for this winter season INFLUENZA = THE FLU Commonly known as ‘the flu’, influenza is a highly communicable disease that can be serious, debilitating and affect the whole body. It can also leave you feeling like you’ve just been run over by a bus. It is usually transmitted through inhalation of pathogen containing aerosol droplets from the coughs or sneezes of an infected person as well as from surfaces contaminated by bodily fluids. So it’s easy to catch and spread and hard to avoid.

SYMPTOMS Flu symptoms tend to develop one to three days after infection, and may include: •
High fever
•
Chills
•
Coughing
•
Runny noses
•
Poor appetite
•
Muscle Aches
•
Dizziness
•
Flushed Face
•
Headache
•
Tiredness
•
Nausea
•
Vomiting
Many people believe they have the flu when it’s actually the less severe common cold. When you have the flu, you will know it! If you don’t have the high fever and you are suffering from some of the other symptoms you are most likely experiencing an unpleasant cold, rather than the flu. While it’s common for Australian adults to contract a nasty cold two or three times a year, children get far more colds than adults. This is probably because schools and childcare centres are a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Eww! Serious complications can result from the flu virus for high risk groups. The elderly, young children, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions run a greater risk of developing complications as a result of the influenza virus.
Page 9 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Some of the issues that can arise from influenza include pneumonia, bronchitis, chest and sinus infections, heart, blood system or liver complications, which can lead to hospitalisation and even death. By having the flu vaccine each year these people in high risk categories are limiting their risk of complications.
TREATMENT AND PREVENTION Annual vaccination is the best way of preventing the flu and the most effective way to reduce the number of flu infections and deaths. Each year, a new vaccine is developed and is available for those who wish to be immunised. As the flu virus is constantly changing, the seasonal influenza vaccine includes protection against the flu strains which are most likely to be around that winter. To receive your influenza vaccination, visit your local doctor or immunisation provider. The vaccine is free for those within a high-risk group, but
it is also reasonably priced for the general Australian public (generally under $20.00). If you are unsure as to whether or not you are considered to be at high risk, please consult your local GP. You can also help to protect yourself against influenza by making sure to wash your hands regularly, covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze (with your arm, not your hands), using hand sanitiser and not sharing cutlery, cups and bottles with others. If you are unlucky enough to get the flu, most patients can make a full recovery with over the counter medication, a lot of rest and by keeping up with fluids. Just make sure to avoid alcohol and smoking, as this may prolong the disease.
FLU FACTS • In most of Australia, the peak flu season usually runs from August to September. • The Flu shot is safe for pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy • Seasonal influenza can be fatal to people in high risk groups • There is no live virus in the flu shot, so you will not get the flu from the vaccine • Influenza is a potentially fatal disease estimated to cause more deaths than road accidents every year: between 1500 and 3500 influenza deaths annually • Between 5% and 20% of the Australian population may be infected with influenza each year • Children are much more likely to contract influenza in any given season: 2050% compared with 1030% in adults.
Vaccination works by injecting the body with small parts of the influenza virus. This triggers an immune response and will cause antibodies to develop in the body about 2 weeks after injection. However, since the virus is not live, it will not trigger severe symptoms. During the flu season, because the immune system was preexposed to the same antigen, antibodies can be produced very rapidly and neutralise the virus before a large number can be established inside the body. Set a Budget
Planning out in advance what you’ll need and how much you’re happy to spend on it can help you to avoid unexpected expenses and impulse purchases. Showbags and rides can be especially dear, but giving your children a budget of their own for each can be a great educational experience, and help keep you from going dizzy at the expense of it all. Food and Drinks
Food vendors at the Show have some great chow, but they can charge a pretty penny, so pack some snacks to go or even lunch of your own to take with you instead if you’re looking to save some money. Expect to do a lot of walking too, so bring plenty of bottled water for you and the family to stay hydrated with so that you don’t have to pay out the nose for refreshments.
3
Don’t Drive
Between petrol and parking fees, driving your car to the Show is expensive, and can be a hassle. But there are cheaper and easier options; the relatively new Adelaide Showgrounds Railway Station is straight outside the showgrounds gates on the convenient Seaford, Belair, and Tonsley train lines. Failing that, riding your bikes up together as a family, or getting a lift from friends or family can still save you a lot of money on fuel and parking.
Cheaper Entry
Just the entry fee itself can leave you feeling destitute, so look out for the Discount Days on Wednesday the 6th and Thursday the 7th of September, when adults and students can enter at the much cheaper children ticket price between the hours of 9am and 1pm. Prepurchasing your tickets can also save you up to 15% compared to the gate price, which can add up to a pretty penny when a Family Ticket can cost you over $60 at the gate.
5
Free Activities
You don’t have to take the kids on rides all day just to keep them entertained. At the Farm Expo you can find free baby animal petting and feeding, from chickens & pigs to goats, alpaca, and kittens. Then there are the athletic competitions on display, with free entry to woodcutting, horticulture, horse racing, and a rabbit jumping competition at the Pet Centre. There is free food & wine tasting at the Taste SA Pavilion, free games & activities at the Kids’ Corner, and the RAA fireworks every night in the Main Arena.
6
Don’t Go!
Skipping the Royal Show for a year isn’t the end of the world, even if the kids might try to convince you otherwise. A day out at the Show can easily add up to a couple hundred dollars or more. Fortunately there are a lot of much cheaper or even free options for outings with the kids. Local events will usually be advertised in your local paper, and you can also find information on other rural exhibitions for the kids being run all throughout the year at www.sacountryshows.com
Page 15 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Getting Ready Take a Timetable It’s easy to feel lost for time on the day. By planning out a rough itinerary in advance, you’ll have a handy guide to refer to. Go showbag shopping earlier in the day so the kids won’t nag you for it– and then they’ll have snacks for the rest of day. But don’t feel the need to strictly adhere to a schedule at all costs; if the kids start to feel a bit sickly after a one too many rides or chocolate bars, don’t be afraid to end the day earlier than you planned.
Staying Safe
Pack Provisions
In the busy Show crowds, it’s possible for a restless child to slip out of sight. Getting lost in a large crowd can be distressing, so before the day starts, take a moment to explain to them what to do. For small children, it’s best for them to either stay still or look for another mother with children for help. For the older ones, explain how to find an info kiosk or agree on a spot to meet. Finally, take a picture of your kids at the start of the day for a handy visual reference.
Check what the weather is going to be on the day and have some sunscreen or an umbrella on hand to bring if necessary. If you’re worried that your younger children might find the fireworks at the end of the night too loud, bring along some protective earplugs or muffs for them to use. Don’t forget some bottled water, as it’ll definitely be a day full of walking.
Page 16 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
The Show doesn’t have to break the bank; it’s also an opportunity to earn some extra cash for the coming holidays through employment opportunities in all sorts of roles over the ten day event. For an overview of all employment and contact opportunities as they come up, hop online and visit www.theshow.com.au/showbusiness/employment/ Jobs at the show may also be advertised more generally in The Advertiser and on vacancy boards like Seek.com, so stay up to date for opportunities for roles such as running showbag stalls, vending gate tickets, and serving food.
With these tips, hopefully you should be a little more prepared for this year’s Royal Adelaide Show. For more info on the Show such as the showground map, event schedules and prices, and ticketing information, check out the Show’s official website and Facebook page over at

OUTSMART
THE SCAMMERS
Australians lost nearly $300 million to scammers in 2016.
W
DATING AND ROMANCE
Scams are becoming all too common with the rise of online job searching, social media and dating websites. Criminals are forever finding new ways to extort money from the unsuspecting so the best defence against scams is education and awareness According to Scamwatch, a website created by the Australian competition and consumer commission (ACCC) to help people to report scams and find information on how to avoid scams, scams can fall into the following categories:
The rising trend in online dating has increased the number of scammers targeting people who are looking for romantic partners by pretending to be prospective companions. Many of these romance scammers play on emotional triggers to get you to provide money, gifts or personal details once they have gained your trust and your defences are down. According to the Scamwatch website, dating and romance scams reported the highest losses in 2016, totalling $25,480,351 in Australia alone.
e have all heard stories of people getting scammed and losing a lot of money. Many of these stories involve the young or the elderly. In fact, Australians aged over 55 accounted for nearly 50 percent of reported scams in 2016.
disasters. If you are interested in donating to the charity, go online and donate directly to the official website.
UNEXPECTED MONEY
BUYING OR SELLING
“Scammers invent convincing and seemingly legitimate reasons to give you false hope about offers of money. There are no get-rich-quick schemes, so always think twice before handing over your details or dollars.”
“Scammers prey on consumers and businesses that are buying or selling products and services. Not every transaction is legitimate.”
UNEXPECTED WINNINGS
“If you are looking for a fast way to make money, watch out – scammers have invented all sorts of fake money-making opportunities to prey on your enthusiasm and get hold of your cash.”
Unexpected prize and lottery scams are on the rise and they work by asking you pay a sum of money to claim your prize or winnings from a competition or lottery you probably never entered. Sometimes scammers will even send you a cheque for partial payment of your winnings just to make them seem more legitimate. However this cheque will eventually bounce and you will not receive any real payments.
FAKE CHARITIES Fake charities try to take advantage of your generosity and compassion for others in need. Scammers will impersonate genuine charities and ask for donations or contact you claiming to collect money for relief efforts after natural Page 18 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
JOBS AND INVESTMENT
ATTEMPTS TO GAIN PERSONAL INFO “Scammers use all kinds of sneaky approaches to steal your personal details. Once obtained, they can use your identity to commit fraudulent activities such as using your credit card or opening a bank account”
THREATS AND EXTORTION “Scammers will use any means possible to steal your identity or your money – including threatening your life or ‘hijacking’ your computer.”

Never send money to a romantic partner you met online, unless you have physically met and even then use caution .
7 Knowledge is paramount when dealing with scams so here are MY top 10 tips:
1
Be careful who you connect with on social media and don’t accept invitations or open messages from people you don’t know.
2 3
Avoid giving out your personal information to anyone and especially not over a text message, email or Facebook.
Always keep a current set of username and passwords for ALL sites, accounts and personal devices with your Last Will and Testament. These need to be kept someplace safe so that it can be found in event of an emergency
4
Keep all software up to date, this includes web browsers, anti-virus, operating systems and so on.
5
Too good to be true deals are just that. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
Page 20 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Be careful where you download programs, patches or other types of media, some files may have imbedded virus that can get through your anti-virus.
8
Cold calls are never good so before giving details, ask yourself “Could this be a scam?” If there is any doubt in your mind as to the validity of the call, just say “Sorry I don’t give out personal information during a cold call”. After you hang up, it is a good idea to directly contact whoever they claimed to be representing.
9
If you get an email from a company asking for your personal details, always investigate the content of the email by closing the email and logging in through the company’s official website. Very few companies will ask for personal details via an email link.
10
ALWAYS shred, black out or otherwise hide personal information on mail etc before throwing it out.
Regardless of how you are scammed, you could end up losing a lot of money.
If you are concerned about scams you can visit www.scamwatch.gov.au to keep up to date with scams to look out for, report scam activity, and get information about what to do if you become a scam victim.

RECONNECTING WITH YOUR KIDS
We all have distractions in life, but if we take a moment we can see what we are missing, quality time with your kids, her is a few ideas of how to get back that connection
R
econnecting with your kids can be fun and even educational without them even knowing. The kids will be surprise at how much fun they can have without playing on their computers or stuck watching television. It is also good to get your kids to use their imagination and their problem solving skills without having to find the answers on the computer. Having a list of ideas to keep your kids entertained is key. Otherwise, you’ll be unprepared for those two little words — “I’m bored.” As a parent or care-giver, if you can spare the time, (record that t.v show, put your phone on silent just for an hour) you will reap the rewards because your kids will love spending the time with you and doing an activity with your child will be etched in their minds forever, precious memories that can never be taken away Page 28 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Have them help with dinner Get your kids to help you at dinner time whether it be peeling vegetables or mixing or even just getting the knives and forks out it’s a good time to communicate with your kids regarding their day or you could listen to them read while you’re preparing the meal. Make time on the weekend or whenever is convenient and make some cupcakes they are easy to make and can also help with kid’s maths skills or their organisation skills
In the garden
Enjoy the outdoors
Get the old paints out and pant together then you can hang it up or put it on the fridge or get a cheap frame and display their artwork, the kids will feel proud of themselves. If you can buy some ply wood from Bunnings and cut out the shape of a flower then paint them and hang them out in the back-yard, it brightens up the yard you can also buy terracotta pots and paint them, plant some herbs or flowers in them {if you look around your neighbourhood you can get cuttings or ask neighbours if you can grab a cutting from their plants most plants will grow from cuttings. The kids could also make a cubby in the back-yard and they can use their imaginations.
Another idea is all those odd soaks could be turned into puppets by sewing on eyes or stick on eyes, mouth etc. Once that is done you can then put on a puppet show. Draw hopscotch on the driveway put together a box full of craft items like paper; glue sticks iceblock sticks. Whenever you’re in a discount shop grab some items from the mark-down bins which are normally at the back of the store and can have cheap textas, pencils etc. going cheap. Go down the beach and collect sea-shells or go to the park and collect some leaves or flowers which can also be great to stick onto pictures.
Birthday Cards If your kids are invited to a birthday party or if one of the relatives are having a birthday get the kids to make a card and even the wrapping paper can be a piece of butcher’s paper that is decorated with your child’s drawings or glue strips of coloured paper i.e. from magazines onto the paper seashells or go to the park and collect some leaves or flowers which can also be great to stick onto pictures.
Go on a picnic Throw a picnic lunch together, pack the cupcakes, grab a blanket to sit on, and head off to a park for a picnic lunch.
BASIC VANILLA CUPCAKES Start with a good vanilla cupcake recipe like this one and you can do anything with cupcakes. Eat them plain or get the kids to decorate them with coloured icing and some sprinkles or lollies. INGREDIENTS 125g unsalted butter (softened) 1 cup caster sugar 3 unit egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 cup plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 125 ml milk Icing 50 g unsalted butter 2 cup icing sugar 2 Tbs milk 2 Tbs sprinkles DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375f or 190c; line muffin cups with papers. Cream butter and sugar till light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add flour (mixed with baking powder and salt) alternating with milk beat well; stir in vanilla. divide evenly among pans and put in the oven for 25 minutes.
Get Crafty As a gift idea especially for family members get the kids to find a photo of them and with cardboard from an old box have them cut a square larger than the photo and decorate the cardboard then stick the photo on to it with another piece of cardboard make a stand for the back, pick some wild flowers from the park or the garden and put them into a book put a heavy object on top and after about a week the flowers should be dried and they can be stuck on the card.
Page 29 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Enjoy your kids Take the kids to the local park or if you live near the beach take a book or magazine and just relax on the sand while the kids make sand castles or play with a ball. If the kids want some spending money get them to gather all their toys that they don’t play with and go through their clothes and what is too small and have a garage sale, at the same time you can clear out any unwanted items or clothing you have, get the kids to make some signs up and let them run the sale and whatever money is made can be spent on an outing of their choice This is a good way for your kids to learn about handling money. Clean out your cupboards and gives them all your old pots and pans, mixing bowls etc. they will love playing with them. The housework can wait; your phone can be turned off for an hour, you can record that TV show. Above all your kids are only young for a short space on time so there will come a time that they will do their own thing and won’t want to spend the time with you. Enjoy it.
Create a time capsule Create a time-capsule, a piece of your family history, get the kids to write a letter to themselves for 20 years’ time send then get an old bottle or jar with a lid and make it your family timecapsule you as a parent could also write your kids a letter, of how life is at this time, how much you love them and even a bit about yourself so in 20 years’ time your kids will have a better understanding of you, bury it in the garden and put a rock or ornament over the site to mark where it is or draw a map of your yard and put an X on the place where you buried your timecapsule {so you remember where it is} put a date for 20 years’ time to all get together to open it.

he food of the future can help you drink your way to health and weight loss. Its called ‘Soylent’. Think of it like a healthy alternative to Sanitarium’s ‘up and go’ without the gratuitous amounts of added sugar. Or a guilt free milkshake without any sugar. It contains all the recommended daily vitamins, carbs, fat and protein needs. It is a form of meal replacement. One bottle satisfies 25% of your total daily intake. Don’t let the idea of a ‘meal replacement’ put you off though. It doesn’t have to completely replace all your meals. Any I wouldn’t recommend it to. It’s best to think of it as a healthy easy and convenient way to replace one
“The texture is like a milkshake but not as sweet.”
of your daily meals. For example replacing breakfast or lunch with a bottle of Soylent is a good way to start. The USA based Rosa Labs invented and was the first company to start making Soylent in 2013. Currently there are several companies around the world making their own versions. With both solid bar form versions, powdered versions and premixed drink versions. In Australia there are three main companies which offer powdered and premixed versions. Premixed bottles are ‘ready to drink’ versions of Soylent. They don’t need to be mixed with water and are, as the name suggests, ready to drink immediately. Aussielent currently offers the largest range of Soylent in Australia. They have two ready to drink versions and several powdered versions. Vanilla, Chocolate and vegan.

your calorie intake and thus can help you lose weight. To lose weight you need to eat less calories than your body needs per day. For the average adult 2000 calories per day is what you need to sustain your current weight. Eating 200 to 500 calories less per day means you’ll lose weight. While eating 500 calories over means you will put on weight.
The second biggest Soylent company in Australia is Ozsoylent. They offer only three powdered versions. Chocolate, vanilla and original. Out of these companies I would recommend starting with Aussielent’s ‘ready to drink’. It doesn’t have a strong flavour and it’s the easiest to drink as it requires no prior preparation. The taste is very similar to soy milk. The texture is like a milkshake but not as sweet. The ready to drink bottle costs roughly $4 to $5 per bottle although it is cheaper when bought in bulk. While the powder works out to roughly $2 to $3 per meal. This is cheaper than most fast food options and much healthier. So how does Soylent help you lose weight? It’s all about how many calories you consume. First, let’s look at some of the benefits. The first is that it’s an easy way to get all your daily nutrients. The second is that it’s cheaper than regular meals, especially if you buy in bulk. Finally it helps you to watch
So the way Soylent helps you lose weight is because it’s portioned in an easy to manage way. Because each bottle is 500 calories you just need 3 of them per day to lose weight. Although you don’t need to replace every meal with Soylent to lose weight. It just helps you to replace typically unhealthy meals with more nutritionally rich and healthy ones. For example instead of an unhealthy and nutritionally limited fast food breakfast or lunch you and instead drink a bottle of Soylent. So next time you’re feeling hungry don’t buy sugary Boost juice or carb heavy ‘Up and Go’. Don’t give up and go to McDonald’s or Hungry Jacks. G grab a bottle of Soylent instead.

dead space ma 15+
PC $*$19.99, PlayStation 3 *$14.99, Xbox 360 *$19.95
Story: The game is set in the year 2508 and
you play as the character Isaac Clarke. You and your team receive a distress signal from the USG Ishimura, a planet cracker starship. Your guidance system malfunctions, leading to you and your team crashing in the dock of the ship. You now begin to investigate the ship of what has happened. While investigating you get split up from your team by some alien monster. You then find out the whole ship is infested in these horrifying creatures. So now you must find a way to get back with your team and survive this hellish nightmare while investigating where these creatures came from.
Review: I really enjoyed this game.
it has lots of twists that keep the game interesting. The alien monsters are creepy, the atmosphere of being in space trying to survive these creatures keeps you on edge. The story of the game is really interesting, and when you think you have it right something happens and makes you guess what is really happening all over again. I give it 3.5 out of 5.

Slender the arrival ma15+
PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox one *$10.00
Story: You play as the character Lauren who goes to visit her childhood friend Kate. When you arrive at Kate’s home she’s not there and there are drawings all over the house of a tall thin figure and symbols. After searching the house you reach her room and then hear a distant that seems to come from the woods next to Kate’s house. You go to investigate hoping to find your friend Kate, but there is something in the woods. The Slender man is trying to make you his next victim while you’re on the hunt trying to find out what happened to your friend. Review: This is one of my favourite indie horror games. When you have to collect the pages or turn on the generators the whole time you’re on edge wondering when slender man will pop up and try to take you away. You have to be quick to turn around and run away when slender man is near or he will take you away and you will never been seen again. I give it 4 out of 5

outlast r18+
Xbox one *$26.95, PlayStation 4 *$19.45, PC *$19.99
Story: An investigative journalist Miles
Upshur receives an anonymous tip that the Mount Massive Asylum, a private psychiatric hospital has been conducting inhumane experiments on the patients. Miles arrives at the hospital and finds a way inside. While inside he discovers corpses of the staff of the hospital and a dying SWAT officer informs Miles that the patients known as "variants" are roaming the hospital butchering anyone they see. He then pleads for Miles to run and leave. As Miles goes to leave a big deformed patient knows as Chris Walker grabs him knocks him out. When Miles awakens a priest of the hospital has turned off the power to all the exits of the hospital. Now Miles has to figure out a way to escape and find out what really happened to the hospital.
Review: Outlast is one of the best Indie horror games to play. You play as a defenceless character only holding a camera to document your experience in the hospital so everyone can find out the truth. The only way to survive is by running and hiding. You also have to use your camera wisely due to it having batteries and you have to find more batteries during the game. the game has an interesting story and you have those patients running around trying to kill you keeping the game intense and scary. I give it 3.5 out of 5

resident evil 7 r18+
Xbox one, PlayStation 4 *$77.00 PC *$57.00
Story: In the new installment of Capcom’s
Resident evil series. You play as new character Ethan Winters who gets an email from his missing wife Mia saying “come get me”. Ethan drops everything and goes to where the email says to go, in Louisiana. Upon reaching the destination he finds a house which seems abandoned and begins to search the house of any sign of Mia. Ethan eventually ends up finding Mia in the basement of the house in a cell, but unfortunately for Ethan the residents of the house are still around. Now Ethan has to fight to survive and escape with Mia while finding out the truth about why she went missing and what happened to the residents of the house.
Review: Resident evil 7 went in a different
direction to the original six games. Instead of a third person survival horror game it is now a first person game. Similar to the first three Resident Evil games with the puzzles and saving ammo for the right time this game takes you back to how resident evil used to be before the recent Resident Evil games became an action horror game. The game keeps you on edge the whole time knowing you are being stalked by the residents of the house and other creatures lurking around. It’s one of the best horror games in a long time. It has a good story and it actually scares you. I give it 4 out of 5

Will James survive the horror in Silent hill and find out the truth behind his dead’s wife letter?
Review: This is one of the best horror
games I have ever played. The atmosphere of it is creepy with all the fog everywhere not knowing what will come out of it. The game punishes the main character for what happened to his wife. Everything wrong he has done Silent hill keeps reminding him of it. It has a great story and gameplay, you have to play smart to get passed the puzzles in the game and use your ammo wisely because you only find a limited amount of ammo for your weapons. UNDERRATED HORROR MOVIES Grab your flashlight and cower under the covers. We’ve uncovered 5 horror gems to fill your winter nights with chills. By Jake A
1
GRAVE ENCOUNTERS Plot: A ghost reality TV show called
grave encounters goes to investigate the abandoned Colling-wood Psychiatric Hospital. They get given a tour of the hospital before getting locked in overnight to find evidence of the paranormal in the hospital. When it’s time to leave the man who locked them in there never shows up. As the team goes to break the door down it leads to another corridor instead of leading to the outside. Panicking the crew try to find a way to escape the haunted hospital while being hunted down one by one by the evil within the hospital.
Review: When I first watched this movie
it scared me. The atmosphere of it is creepy and scary it will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a found footage horror to give it that feeling that it is real to get you more scared. One of my favorite things about this movie is it starts off lightly with a window opening and just building from there. Even if you want to Page 38 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
watch the trailer before the movie it will scare you and give you chills down your spine. Grave Encounters is a cleverly made found footage movie that deserves to be more known. When it ends it leaves you with a lot of questions making you want more. You will get a scare out of this movie. I give it four and a half zombie stars out of five

EXTRATERRESTRIAL
Plot: April and her boyfriend Kyle decide to go to her parents cabin for the weekend but Kyle invited his friends to come along with them. When they make it to the cabin they all start drinking and smoking having a good time until they see something crash into the forest. As they investigate they find a crashed alien aircraft and see footprints suggesting one of them is still alive. They make their way back to the cabin and encounter an alien but kill it short after. Now it’s a fight for survival as more aliens come to abduct April and the rest. Review: If I’m being honest I don’t like sci-fi
horror movies but this is good one. Its old style aliens in today’s generation. You know the type tall, slender, grey and big oval head with big black eyes. Though it is a sci-fi horror movie it has a lot of scary moments that will give you a good jump, it also has the old style probing in it as well. Extraterrestrial has your typical cliché characters but they all work well in this movie which ends up making it enjoyable to watch while waiting for the next jump scare. So even if you’re a fan of sci-fi horror or not it’s an enjoyable alien horror movie that anyone would like. I give it four zombie stars out of five
3
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Plot: five college friends go on a
little get away to Curt’s cousin’s cabin in the woods. Little did they know that something sinister and evil gets released in the woods. Zombies are hunting the college students. But that’s not all; there is something more evil living under the cabin. Will the college students find out what is happening or will they fall to their fate and become the next victims to the zombies and evil in the woods.
Review: this movie should have been bigger
than what it is. It’s new and something different for the horror genre. It has a good story and a bunch of twists to keep you wanting to watch. It’ll keep you guessing what is happening which will make you want to watch it all till you find out the truth. It is so underrated and will make you ask why you never heard of it. I give it four zombie stars out of five

DOG SOLDIERS Plot: A squad of British soldiers
gets dropped off in the Scottish highlands to do a training mission against a special air service only to find the squad bloody remains left behind. They find one survivor but he is badly injured. The British army squad now find themselves running for their lives from a pack of werewolves. Luckily someone was driving through the highlands and they quickly get into the car and drive to a lonely house. Can all of their military training protect them until sunrise?
Review: if you’re in the mood for a horror
comedy movie then this is the perfect one to watch. It is brilliantly made with great British humor. But it does have a lot of gore to give it that horror title. I liked the twist in the movie as well. If you don’t like werewolf movies then this one will change your mind. I give it three zombie stars of a five
5
BEHIND THE MASK: The rise of leslie vernon
Plot: In a world where Jason Voorhees and
Freddy Kruger are real, this movie is made like a real life documentary on a serial killer in the making named Leslie Vernon. A female journalist and her team follow and work with Leslie to find out what it takes to be a serial killer and how they choose their victim. Leslie explains in detail how he will kill his victims and how to stop them from escaping their fate and what rules to follow to become a serial killer.
Review: Ever wanted to know what it takes
being a serial killer and what rules you had to follow? If so this is the movie for you. Where Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and Freddy Kruger (nightmare on Elm Street) are real there are others who want to follow in their footsteps. I like the idea of this movie being a found footage documentary film describing what it is like being a serial killer and what it takes to be a professional serial killer.
I give it three and half zombies stars out of five

he sleepy seaside town of Somerton, South Australia, is not the kind of place where history is made, and so when a body was found propped up against the sea wall of a foggy beach in the early hours of December 1st, 1948, detectives were sure the case would solve itself. It was a suicide, they reasoned. A man would be reported missing. His family would come forward. The mystery would be solved. Nobody did, and as days slowly turned into months, detectives find themselves staring down one of the most puzzling cases in Australian forensic history.

he dead man carries no identification, no wallet, and no wedding ring. Although smartly dressed, the labels have been torn from his clothing. Among his meagre possessions: unused train tickets, a box of cigarettes, a packet of Juicy Fruit chewing gum, an American military comb. A half-smoked cigarette lay pinned between his cheek and his collar, as if his death has interrupted a relaxing morning smoke. An autopsy determines he was in fine physical health, except for an abnormally enlarged spleen, but his body shows signs of extensive internal congestion. The coroner rules the cause of death as unnatural – a suspected poisoning, although an expert chemist finds no trace of poison in his system. With no other viable recourse, the body is embalmed nine days later. His identity remains unknown. In June of the following year, the body is reexamined. The results are unremarkable, but a rolled scrap of paper is found wedged deep within a hidden fob pocket. Printed on it are the Persian words “Tamam Shud”; translated as “finished”. The fragment is identified as belonging to a rare printing of 12th-century poetry, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. An investigation is launched to locate the exact copy the fragment had been torn from. Against all odds, the book is found – in the back seat of an apparent stranger’s parked car. The book raises more questions than it answers.
Indentations of a short message, signed “Jestyn”, are found inside the back cover, along with the phone number of a local address no more than five minutes away from where the body was found. A quick visit brings police face to face with “Jestyn”, an alias of nurse Jo Thomson. When questioned, she proves to be an uncooperative lead, although investigators are convinced she knows the man.
Along with Thomson’s message, five lines of cryptic text are also found, one struck through. At first believed to be a foreign language, it’s quickly decided to be a cipher. Theories range from top secret spy communication, to a mnemonic code, to the meaningless product of a deranged mind. Despite all attempts, it remains unbroken. Jo Thomson, to her credit, proves no less enigmatic. A Sydneytrained nurse destined to be married, living in the sleepy seaside suburb with her fiancé and baby boy, her life is the perfect picture of Australian suburbia. However, many years later her daughter would claim she knew Russian, but when asked would refuse to explain why. She signed her name with an alias, and would for years
deny any and all investigation. Eventually she relented, admitting she was the nurse involved in the case, but remained adamant that she did not know the mysterious dead man. Flash forward to 2017 and the case has taken on mythic status. Theories range from assassinated Russian spy, to jilted lover, to shell shocked soldier, to simple suicide, and despite renewed interest, answers have remained as elusive as ever. Calls to exhume the man – who now rests in Adelaide’s West Terrace Cemetery – and conduct DNA analysis have been shot down citing lack of compelling reason. In the meantime, Adelaide University’s Professor Derek Abbot has taken on the mantle of world expert on the Somerton Man case as is of the opinion that the spy theory does not stack up. Records from the period are now public and simply do not back up the story, he says. In retort he offers a theory of his own: Jo Thomson’s son, then only a child, shares a few rare genetic anomalies with the Somerton Man. His lateral teeth were missing, his incisors directly next to his middle teeth, and he has an enlarged upper ear hollow. Although not conclusive, it’s evidence that Jo Thomson may have had a child out of wedlock with the mysterious man a few years before his death. Whatever the case, we may never know. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Page 43 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped

Goal Setting For Success
c e sk h y
A
life without goals is like a ship with no map. With no goals we have no idea where we’re going in life, yet despite this, many of us still fail to realize just how important goal setting can actually be. Whether you’re looking to save money, get in better shape, clean up your lifestyle, or open up new career possibilities, setting goals can help take you one step closer to achieving your dreams.
Perspective
Focus
Goals break down achivements into manageable steps, and allow you to focus on the smaller here-and-now goals that combine to create something much greater. A rigorous goal setting regime will tell you exactly where you are and where you need to go at every step of your journey. Knowing this, yow will be far more likely to succeed. a
r th
R e fo a
Goals remind us that progress is a journey, not a destination. With a record of your achivements, you can reflect on and take pride in what you have already done. Likewise, if you are struggling to meet your goals, this may indicate improvements to be Goals therefore, are ideal for measuring levels of success and finding out just how much progress you are actually making.
Motivation
Goals give us something to aim for. If you don’t have concrete goals to aim for, your motivational levels will be reduced as there will be less urgency. However, with regular goals, you will know exactly what they are aiming for, and you will therefore be more motivated. When you have something to work towards, you can focus all of your efforts and attention on meeting these goals and targets, no matter what they may be.
Accountability
The outcome of some goals —such as finding work — does not lie solely with yourself. Setting goals enable you to take control of the things you can control, while sidelining what you cannot. You may not find a job, but with proper goal setting, you make ensure you are doing all you can to get one.

Setting Effective Goals People often think that goals have to be complex and set on a large scale, when in reality, telling yourself you are going to wash the dishes before going to bed, and doing exactly that, will mean that you have accomplished something. It may be a small goal, but every step counts. That being said, not all goals are created equal. An easy mnemonic to guide you is S.M.A.R.T.
S M A R T Page 46 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Specific A goal should tell you exactly what you need to do, so you know exactly when you’re done. For example, instead of saying you want to read more, set yourself a page target for each week. Measurable Truly great goals have measurable criteria for progress. It’s important to know exactly what you have to do, and when you are finished. Ask yourself: “How will I know when this is accomplished?” Attainable It’s alright to shoot for the stars, but it’s just as important to ensure the goals you set yourself are realistic and achieveable. Goals that are not attainable are doomed to fail! Relevant The best goals are things you are both willing and able to work towards. Think about why you want to reach your goals and decide for yourself if they are right for you. Timely Keep realistic and flexible deadlines for your goal setting. If you want to lose weight, when do you want to lose it by?

GOT THE WINTER BLUES? TRY SOME RETAIL THERAPY
O
p shopping is a fantastic way to stock up on all your winter needs for a fraction of the price. It’s not only great for your pocket but it’s also good for the environment while also supporting local charities and businesses. Thrift shopping can lead to some wonderful finds, from funky leather boots to a winter coat, fashionable dresses or accessories like a woolly scarf or gloves, all at a very low cost. Personally I love pre loved fashion, not only does it give me the opportunity to be creative and dress outside the box, it’s also healthy for my wallet. I would say eighty per cent of my wardrobe has once belonged to someone else who loved wearing it. I have been very lucky from time to time and found absolute gems! Like my black real leather Italian boots ($7), or my knee-high soft brown leather boots made in Brazil ($6), my gorgeous vintage red bag ($4)or my long “Little Red Riding Hood “ coat that I adore ($9). Even right now, as I write this article I am wearing a warm lovely earthy brown jumper and a café latte scarf I picked up at Anglicare for a total price of $8 and my trusty companion, my leather bag is also pre loved. Who
needs to know they are from the op shop, right? All I can say is that I feel fabulous knowing I got a bargain, helped the local charity and look good at the same time. Adelaide enjoys a wide range of thrift shops with something to suit every taste. Whether you’re into vintage clothing, 80’s fashion, pre loved high end brands, faux fur jackets or need inspiration for your next dress up party, you are sure to find something you will love at your local op shop. Non for profit organisations rely heavily on their op shops’ success as well as on their volunteers to be able to assist so many people in need. These organisations have been around for many years and are well known and respected names in our society. The Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul, Anglicare and the Salvation Army are some of the charities that offer quality goods at great prices with the profit going to worthy causes in our local communities and abroad.

The Salvation Army SA The Salvation Army retail stores are called the Salvos Stores, with multiple op shops in every state; this organisation is well known by most people. They count heavily on the donations of business and the public. Their retail shops are also used to train volunteers and people who are looking to expand on their work experience. Salvos store provide quality goods ranging from books, clothing, bric a brac, furniture, accessories and much more. Go and have a look, you’ll be surprised at what you’ll find. So if you want to look trendy and keep warm this winter but only have $20 in your pocket, why not head to your local thrift store and grab a bargain? You will not only be happy with your purchase, you will also get that warm feeling inside for helping those in need… a warm trendy jacket at a steal price and a warm
Stock in op-shops can come and go very quickly and the best items tend to move fast, especially in busy city stores. Go as often as you can to maximise your chances of finding hidden gems. If you are really serious about op-shopping, it doesn’t hurt to ask an employee when they refill their stock and find out if there is a schedule for adding new items. If you go right after the stock has been replenished you’ll beat everyone else to the good stuff.
Some op-shops still don’t accept cards so make sure you have some cash on hand. Opshopping is also a bit more time consuming than shopping in retail stores and, unlike when you are at a shopping centre, there probably won’t be stalls selling snacks nearby. Make sure you have plenty of time and eat before you go. Op-shopping isn’t much fun if you are rushed or hungry.
Look for the potential in things and try to be open-minded. Sometimes clothes, knickknacks and furniture just need a minor alteration or repair to make them wonderful. Other things can be repurposed into something entirely new. Use your imagination and try to think outside the box.
Just because you are buying second-hand, doesn’t mean you have to skimp on quality. I would suggest feeling and closely inspecting a garment’s fabric, this will let you know if a piece, which may not suit you in its current form, can be transformed into something fabulous.
Op-shopping is not like strolling through a clothes store where you can quickly scan the displays. You need to set aside some time to go through the individual racks of clothes, sort through the crockery and dig through the boxes of assorted junk. It takes a little more patience than traditional shopping but if you are thorough, you can be rewarded with great finds at bargain prices.
Not all op-shops are created equally and it might take you a while to discover the hidden gems in your community. Before you set out on your op-shopping adventure (some hardcore people even take road trips to hunt down the best stores), study a map and decide what stores you will visit, check the opening hours and plan the best route.
This tip is more about focusing your thinking. Have a rough idea of what you’re a looking for. If you find a bargain ask yourself, Is this what I came here to get? Do I really need this item? And Will I actually wear this? By keeping these questions in mind you can avoid spending more than your budget allows and you will also only spend your money on items you really love. What is Cities Skylines? Cities: Skylines is a city building game. You start off with a small 2x2 kilometre square with 1 highway connection, flowing water and land to build on. It is your job to build a functioning city for your incoming residents You have a set budget, so within the set budget, you need to build roads, power plants, waterpipes and pumping stations. Each level you unlock, also unlocks new buildings, assets and a bunch of other things. After a certain amount of levels, you start to earn new grid squares, to help expand the city, unique builings and parks. with each level, as a reward for levelling up, the game provides a much needed money boost. Each new level, the higher the payout is.

Game Mechanics:
The game controls (for me personally) are a little awkward to use, but after a while of playing, I slowly got use to them. I ended up changing the controls to better suit me, but even then, I still found them awkward to use. The game does have controller support, but it will take some getting used to, I had problems trying to map every button, as the game did not have all the controller buttons assigned automatically. The finance system in the game is very good, I found myself going to debt quite often even though I didn’t spend much money. I fixed the debt problem by spending more money then I should have. Most of my money was spent on parks, which filled up about 50% of the residential area, I also added many hospitals, police departments, fire departments and schools, YET my residents were still not happy The one thing I don’t like about the games mechanics is how unrealistic the population is. I know it’s only a city building game, but my city had sewage problems. Now away from the poopy situation, I don’t like how unrealistic the population is, the residential, industrial and commercial area all have to be perfectly balanced (example: each house equals 1 commercial building and or industrial building. I found a Mod that fixes this, (this may be half the reason why I ended up in debt). The mod basically changes how the game zoning behaves, so every 10 residential housing, equals to 1 commercial or industrial building.
Page 54 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Residents, Commercial and Emergency Services
After the last couple days of playing, one thing I have noticed is that, the residents in my city can’t handle not being able to poop for more than 3 seconds, if I was to turn off the sewage plant, they go on a poop frenzy and complain that the streets are over flowing with sewage. They also don’t have any sense of direction either, but have more sense than most Adelaide drivers. They also want a hospital to themselves. I ended up having just as many hospitals as residential housing. The emergency services in this game, are among the dumbest I have seen. They don’t get to the emergencies until it’s basically too late. I have seen residents die from being sick because the ambulances are too lazy to go help. I had a plague happen which knocked out 70% of my residents and over filled 5 hospitals. Fire Trucks only do half a job; if there are multiple fires in 1 location they will put out one fire and then piss off to Narnia and let the rest burn down.
Page 55 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Traffic:
Traffic in this game is just like the traffic in Adelaide. They disobey road rules, try to kill each other by cutting corners and pulling out in front of others. They would rather die in an accident than live a happy life. They also enjoy driving through each other, and causing some chaotic traffic jams. Not to mention that they don’t know how to utilise more than 1 lane, they all try to squeeze into 1, even though there is multiple lanes. There is 1 good thing that the traffic do better than those in Adelaide, they are smart enough to stop at traffic lights!
Page 56 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
DLC’s (Downloadable Content)
The game has a range of DLC’s, one of which can be a pain in the butt. The ones I have installed are; After Dark, This DLC basically allows strip clubs and casinos, Bars and a range of other things. Natural Disasters, This one is my favourite, because the disasters are unexpected. I had a tornado make a direct impact with my residential area; I lost 900 residents due to the damage caused. Once I hit 35 thousand people, I noticed traffic congestion issues, especially in the town area. Fixing this wasn’t easy at all, as I basically had to re-grid everything, which was very time consuming. Planning the city well ahead of when it really becomes established is a must, as I found out. Having to delete half the buildings just to re-grid was a pain. Imagine all those poor business men who lost their jobs, and had to rebuild? The possibilities on this game are endless, you can even take the time to make everything perfect, like OCD perfect, or like me; go full out putting roads in random places (which works for a third of the time, so OCD is your best chioce). No matter how you play the game, you will find enjoyment out of it, just like what I did, especially when my residents had a small toilet situation for about 3 seconds, which caused some concerning street flooding.

Finding the best place to build a shelter Looking for a place to build your shelter is not an easy task. You need to build a shelter that’s near clearing.(if you are lost, and its very hilly, finding a point at tops, or close to tops of hills is best) This clearing will become a useful tool later down the track. You need to build against the main wind direction, so studying the cloud direction and wind direction is crucial. If there are no clouds, and the wind is not strong enough to know its direction, roughly estimate the direction of the wind. Also if possible, make sure the shelter is built near flowing water.
building your shelter When building your shelter, you need to mark out the layout of the shelter, what walls go where. You need to start with large, long logs at the bottom, and for the walls. Once the main frame is all set up, you can then work on applying the dirt, mud, leaves, sticks and twigs along the roof and walls. You will need to layer and make sure that it is going to be waterproof (Nothing is worse than have it start raining and you getting wet, especially if it is going to be a cold night). For the shelter floor, place a heap of leaves and grass, so that it fills the shelter at least half full. This all will provide warmth and comfort.
how to survive in a survival situation Being in a survival situation is quite daunting at first. But knowing these few rules will guarantee your survival, or increase your chances of survival. If you are lost. You need to have an Action Plan. This Action Plan needs to have a list of jobs that need to be done. Number 1 being the top priority and number 2 being the second priority etc‌ Each job can be done at roughly the same time, or if you are in a group bigger than 5, you can set group tasks. (For example: 3 people work on building a shelter while the other 2 go out to collect firewood). Your top priority is to build a shelter. It needs to be big enough for yourself, or the group (depending how many people are with you). It needs to be low enough so you can sit down. This shelter will be your home until you are found. Page 65 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Building a fire pit A fire pit should be placed no less than 2 metres outside your entrance to your shelter. You should also have a clearing of 1m around where the fire pit is going to be placed. The pit itself needs to be roughly a hands length deep, this will stop the fire from spreading, and will make it easy to manage.
starting a fire When it comes to creating the fire, if you have the right tools with you, the most effective fire starter is using a Flint and Steel. Before using the flint and Steel, you need to gather some tinder. Tinder consists of dead ground cover (twigs, grass, pine needles). Other useful stuff to use is cotton buds, tissues and paper, as they are easy to ignite. You will need to also gather some larger sticks and form a small Tipi in the fire pit, then you will need to place the tinder under this small Tipi. Now use the Flint and Steel to create a spark that will hopefully start the fire. Once you see smoke, start carefully blowing on the fire.
Page 66 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Building a sign Once your shelter and fire pit are complete, you will then need to start planning out your SOS sign. You need to pick the best location to place the sign (usually out in the open, that will be clearly visible from the air). It will need to be large enough to be seen a few thousand feet in the air, and will need to stand out from its surroundings, so choosing the right materials is crucial. Large logs and branches are best. The use of small sticks can be used to fill in the gaps and neaten the whole thing up. FACT: SOS originated from a phrase ‘Save Our Ship’. There has also been other iterations of this. ‘Send Out Succour’ and ‘Save Our Soul’. Most commonly used one is ‘Save Our Soul’.
Keeping Warm at night When sleeping, it is very important you stay as warm as possible (especially during winter and early spring). The best way to keep warm is by stuffing pine needles, grass, leaves in all pockets, under your arms and groin. This will be uncomfortable but this is one way to keeping warm. The second way is to sit back to back against your survival partner. With sitting back to back, your bodies heat will transfer to the other person. Being in the sitting position isn’t the most comfortable position to sleep in, but in a survival situation, your life and staying warm is the number 1 priority.

300 species of native and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles roar, growl and screech at Adelaide zoo.
O
ne of Adelaide’s most iconic attractions, the Adelaide zoo is located in the parklands just north of the city centre. Housing more than 300 animal species of native and exotic mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited over 8 hectares, This non-profit zoo is the second oldest zoo in the country and represents a significant part of South Australia’s heritage and history. With new additions being added and the latest exhibit known as immersion is currently in its second phase of development, providing visitors with the experience of walking through the jungle.
Pandas
History
Who could forget about the giant panda exhibit, home to Wang Wang and Fu Ni, the only Giant Pandas in Australia who arrived in late 2009. Living it up in luxury these two have been the highlight of the Adelaide zoo experience. Despite having different personalities (Fu Ni being more playful and loves to interact with people, while Wang Wang is more laid back and independent). Zookeepers are hopeful to see some baby pandas in the future.
Steeped in more than 130 years of history, Zoos SA has been established as an integral part of South Australia and is one of the oldest conservation organisations. First opening its doors on 23 May 1883, occupying 6.5 hectares (now 8 hectares). It was founded by the South Australian zoological society and later renamed the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia. The purpose of the zoo has also changed over the years and is now renowned for its breeding and conservation programs.
The nature’s playground, is a recently installed new play space and is a wonderful environment where visitors can let their imaginations run wild. This playground offers climbing structures, aerial walkways (to get a birds eye view of the zoo), slides, water features and an interactive children’s zoo full of native animals.
Don’t forget to stop by and see Chilli, Australian’s only remaining flamingo. Until 2014, Chilli’s long term companion was the Greater flamingo, who is thought to have been the world’s oldest flamingo, having lived at least 83 years. Although flamingos are social birds, Chilli has adapted well to being the centre of attention.
Flamingo
This modern zoo has also moved away from housing of species separately. Now species are grouped together as they would be in the wild, the exhibits are carefully planned out and have been designed with the needs of the animals in mind, providing more natural habitats. This also serves an educational purpose for visitors.
Page 69 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Conservation efforts Zoos are uniquely positioned to aid in the conservation of species with the capacity to hold and breed animals, undertake wildlife research and protect species through conservation programs. Over the years Zoos SA has been involved in a wide range of conservation programs. Their efforts have spanned the globe with conservation and sustainability programs with positive outcomes. These include habitat restoration, captive breeding, contributing to insurance populations, conservation education, community fundraising, wildlife disease management and relocation efforts. Zoos SA has been on the forefront of a breeding technique called cross-fostering to help save the endangered wallaby species. Cross-fostering involved transferring the young from a threatened species to a pouch of a similar species. This allows the mother to produce more young and increase the population. Page 70 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Working with communities is important for Zoos SA conservation efforts. Zoos SA recognises the role that community’s play in species and habitat conservation. This is demonstrated in the community engagement conservation programs.

WINTER IS HERE! YOUR COLD WEATHER SURVIVAL GUIDE
There are many practical tips that will enable you and your household to keep warm this winter! Put these into action and
A hot water bottle is your best friend on the cold, frosty nights. The only energy required is boiling the kettle or filling it up straight from the hot water tap. You can pick one up for under $10 from your local chemist.
maybe save a few dollars while you’re at it! A cuppa tea or hot chocolate is a great external and internal warmer! Hang on to that mug to let the heat penetrate your hands and feel the liquid warm you from within.
If you haven’t already, it is a good idea to invest in some heat bags. These are small fabric bags that generally contain wheat and maybe lavender for a soothing smell. After being zapped in the microwave for the recommended time, these bags can stay warm for hours and provide great comfort. Something you may not have thought of is to insulate your windows with bubble wrap. The large-bubbled plastic works best when taped to the inside the windows. The cold air remains

trapped between the glass and plastic, allowing the room to remain warm. If bubble-wrapped windows aren’t an option for you, consider opening the drapes in the morning to let in any potential sunlight and close the curtains at night to keep the warmth from the day contained inside. Plug in the holes! Fill any wafts of air with newspaper, cloths, rolledup towels or speciallymade draught-blockers. In older houses air can come in through unused chimneys, so tape up the fireplace with cardboard or whatever you might have to hand.
Don’t sacrifice your health this winter! Exercise regularly, even if it’s around the house, and remember that it is important to keep yourself hydrated!

Should you have any type of floor covering that isn’t carpet then it is likely going to be a very cold surface. Consider investing in some large rugs as insulation. If you have a fireplace, ensure the flue has been cleaned and that everything is in working order. The build up of corrosive materials can be dangerous and can end up being an expensive hazard if not seen to regularly. Have a room you don’t use very often? Close the door! There is no point heating it if it is not in use.
To stop you from having to warm up a whole room, try using personal warmers instead. Electric throw rugs are great, and cost far less than a heater to run, but if you’d rather conserve electricity, just simply rug up! Blankets, vests, warm fuzzy socks and even thermal underwear can help contain your body heat. Dress your bed appropriately! AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE GOES INTERNATIONAL Article: Mikel
IN APRIL, 2016, HISTORY WAS MADE AS AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL WENT INTERNATIONAL IN ITS FIRST EVER GAME IN CHINA
O
n 14 May, 2017, Port Adelaide Power defeated the Gold Coast Suns in a historical match, watched by millions. However, this match was not played in South Australia, Queensland or anywhere else in Australia. This game was historical because it was the first time that a premiership game was played in China.
On the 14th of April 2016, Port Adelaide Football Club Chairman David Koch announced a three-year multimillion-dollar partnership with leading Chinese property developer Shanghai Cred. Within this partnership, Port Adelaide is set to take primary responsibility for developing Australian Rules football in China. The partnership will see Port Adelaide hold annual training camps and provide sponsorship in 3China, as well as producing AFL programs and broadcasting games in the country via China Central Television and other networks. The globalisation of Australia’s game has divided opinion though. Is there any need to spread Australian Rules internationally? It Page 82 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
might be a pipe dream to expect other nations to embrace playing Australian Rules Football but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a push for more international exposure.
PORT ADELAIDE POWER The Port Adelaide team originally started off as an SANFL team, alongside Adelaide (which has no connection to the Adelaide Crows). While Port Adelaide started in 1870 and the Adelaide team started in 1860 and dissolved in 1893. Before the Adelaide team dissolved in 1877 there was a total of 8 team that joined the team and Port Adelaide. Now Port Adelaide being the last South Australian team to join the AFL has
CLOSING The crowd of about 10,118 featured a healthy contingent of locals among the fans, who travelled from Australia and all over China. With the game also allowing 1.3 Billion people to watch this game free all around the world, it has begun what would seem to be an International AFL premiership games to be played not only in Australia but also around the world not only China. With this game being played in China due to the deal, Port Adelaide will be playing some of their home games in China with such teams as GWS, Geelong, Carlton, St Kilda and Melbourne are prepared to consider selling home games for a match in China next year. With this being said we shouldn’t rule out games being played in such plays as the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and many others within the next few years. become the first to host an AFL game outside of Australia. The winner of this match was Port Adelaide Football Club by 72 points making history on the first to win outside the country which created this game.
GOLD COAST SUNS The Gold Coast Football Club, nickname the suns, were accepted into the AFL in 2009, however they did not began playing for the AFL until 2011. Rodney Eade is a former AFL player and is the current head coach for the Gold Coast Suns. He has to date coached 359 AFL games.
DID YOU KNOW? 1. Did you know that before AFL was called Victorian Football Association until 1990? 2. Did you know that as of 2002 AFL began an International Cup for other countries to play the game on a non-professional level? 3. Port Adelaide’s first club captain and home Guernsey didn’t feature in our first game? 4. Port Adelaide has never been the wooden spoon in the AFL 5. Do you hate winter? Does it make you feel depressed? Do you staple Autumn leaves back on trees exclaiming “this ain’t over yet!”
Maybe you have S.A.D
S
.A.D “Seasonal Affective Disorder” was first popularised by Norman E. Rosenthal in 1984 describing the negative psychological and physiological effects that the change in season has on some people. It is most common during the winter though it can also occur in other seasons. S.A.D affects somewhere between 1 and 10 percent of Americans depending on location and is more common in women than it is in men. The main Symptoms include oversleeping, decreased mood, weight gain, heavy feelings in arms and legs, a craving for carbohydrates and decreased motivation. The most significant cause of S.A.D is believed to be the reduced amount of sunlight exposure during the darker months with socialisation, exercise, diet and genetics also playing a part.
Into the Light When your eyes are exposed to sunlight it passes through your retina and reaches your suprachiasmantic nucleus. Here light is decoded into on/off information and if insufficient light is present a signal is sent to your pineal gland to secrete melatonin. Melatonin is a compound used to regulate sleep. When the body isn’t exposed to enough sunlight signalling to it that it is daytime melatonin is released. The excess of melatonin can cause Hypersomnia (too much sleep). Melatonin isn’t the only chemical that is signalled to be released by the sunlight entering your eye. Serotonin found in your brain and gestational tract can also be triggered to be released enhancing mood and regulating hunger.

Page 85 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Clinical Treatments Like other mood disorders, S.A.D can be treated with antidepressants but an equally effective and less invasive method is the use of a lightbox. Lightboxes are devices that emit light in the same frequency range as natural sunlight allowing users to compensate for the lack of natural light during winter. The standard application is a morning session of 30 minutes with a lamp of 10,000 lux 41 to 61 centimetres away from the face. The use of light boxes to treat SAD has shown favourable results through testing. When compared to Fluoxetine (Prozac) in the Canadian Can-SAD Study (Figure 1) it showed to be slightly more effective than the antidepressant. The first week proved to be the most impactful period for both treatment methods following a similar Page 86 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
curve towards a -15 improvement on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score at week four. The effectiveness then similarly trailed off for both methods ending with a near -17 improvement after eight weeks of treatment.
Cloudy Testing One of the most important metrics used in the research and hypothesising of S.A.D is the percentage of SAD sufferers in a given population. It is imperative that this is a accurate representation of the people suffering S.A.D in that area. If it is not accurate then any conclusions made biased on comparing it to other variables such as sunlight during a given time of a year will be false and misleading. So what is wrong with the testing? One of the most common tests using for screening for S.A.D is the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire and there are afew problems with it. The main one being that the questions are not being asked for the current state of the person taking the test. If I asked you “What did you have for lunch three days ago?” Could you remember? Would you need some time to think? Would you have a senior moment? Now how about ten months ago? How much did you weigh? How long did you sleep for? And how did you feel? All these Questions are in are asked in the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire. The danger of asking people questions of our past instead of documenting our present state is that our memories fade and distort over time and can also be coloured by cognitive assumptions. One of these assumptions could be that we are happier in summer. This may be actually true for some people but there is also the possibility that people who don’t remember their actual past state are swayed by how summer is portrayed in culture. In most popular culture Summer and light is associated with good and happiness while Winter is associated with darkness, evil and sadness. This is evident throughout art, literature and especially popular music. You don’t see anybody singing about Winter. And with good reason too.. imagine Bryan Adams with his party anthem Winter of 69 where he “got his first real case of influenza!”. Or the upbeat “I’m walking in puddles woooooow!” Even in children songs the rain is the bad guy. Like the time the sun came out so save your old mate Incy Wincy. To be Fair Frank Sinatra seemed to be great time Singing in the Rain, and while the Sun Is Shining for Elmore James it was raining in his heart. Though I suspect that is more to do with the scandalous woman who turns up like clockwork around the 8th bar of every blues song. Jokes aside there is real causes to why summer is portrayed in such a positive light in popular culture i.e the variables that contribute to S.A.D But those variables may not have the same affect on that person taking the test and if they can’t remember their actual state they may be swayed to popular consensus. A more accurate test would have been to get participants to log their health and emotional wellbeing once a month to get a more precise reading. Interestingly enough, researchers have been able to use a similar set of data taken from a large national phone survey on depression taken periodically over the year and found that was statistically insignificant correlation between the amount of sunlight they were exposed to and there levels of depression. Page 87 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Causation or Correlation? Because there are so many variables and feedback loops caused by the change in season it is very difficult to determine exactly what factors cause S.A.D. This is made even worse by the fact that a key metric (the percentage of SAD sufferers for the population) may be incorrect leading researchers to make false assumptions. Take for example the Nordic countries of Iceland Sweden Finland and Norway. All of four Countries experience winter periods of extreme darkness with Iceland having the shortest hours of sunlight in the day in the winter. Yet surprisingly despite the lack of daylight Iceland has a surprisingly low percentage of S.A.D sufferers going against the hypothesis that S.A.D is predominately caused by lack of sunlight. Sweden also had a relative low percentage of S.A.D suffers of 3.5% @ 61.1N taken from a completion of global SAD Research findings (figure 2) so what was the cause on this? It has been hypothesized that they maintain good vitamin D levels through their large diet of fish making up for the absence of sunlight. But other factors to consider would be Iceland’s high rank of third on the 2017 Gross National Happiness index only being bettered by Denmark second and Norway first. But contradictingly Norway has a much higher S.A.D percentage of 9.65. Possible differentiating factors between the two include unemployment, community engagement, alcohol consumption, family structure, differences in weather or a myriad of other factors but without a solid foundation of meaningful preferably standardised SAD screening tests any hypothesises would be just shooting in the dark.
Thoughts On Overlooked Factors Light and Shade Maybe people are more likely experience seasonal depression if they experience a large contrast in weather. If it is always dark wet and gloomy all the time with the right attitude people can learn to live with it. However If you have well defined summers or you move from a country that has warm and sunny weather you will have higher expectations of the weather. And as summer turns to winter and the days become overcast and rainy you are less likely to go out and exercise like you did when you were spoilt with good weather in the summer. The old adage when our expectations do not meet reality we will experience unhappiness may be true for weather too.
At Risk Groups Another thing to consider is that physical activity can play a larger part in some people’s lives than others. Physical activity and socialisation are both activities that release dopamine and can play a large role in our general happiness. In particularly people who are either Introverted, single or unemployed are more likely to be less social therefore rely more heavily on physical activity and the great outdoors for their energy and general happiness. So when the winter comes unless they make a conscious effort to continue physical activity indoors they are no longer getting the energy they need though exercise. Extroverted and employed people will not Page 88 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped

suffer as badly if they don’t exercise because they are able to get there energy from socialising and working regardless of the weather. I forgot the single demographic; watching Netflix alone will make you depressed an obese, whereas Netflix as a new couple...still physical activity.
Are you really S.A.D? So if recent findings that standardised periodical depression tests find little connection to sunlight and depression then S.A.D’s primary function is to give researchers more work, sell more pills and give you an excuse for your problems, right? Well not really. It is possible that S.A.D is rarer than we thought with other variables and feedback loops playing a larger role than sunlight alone. So even though we are unsure on how common S.A.D is and how much light plays a roll we do know with a great degree of certainty that sunlight does. We also know that that Light Boxes are as effective in the treatment of someone with S.A.D symptoms as Prozac and although I am not sure if it would be ethical to do so, I would be interested to see the results of a purely placebo treatment to totally rule out placebo. And it’s not just the light that makes me think there is something to S.A.D it’s the warmth and the aesthetics. Perhaps it’s just my S.A.D talking but haven’t you been out a overcast day when a rays of sunshine burst through the clouds changing your whole mood?
ghts is also home to the darkest eykjavik recording the darkest ng only 4:07 hours of sunlight
5 ways to reduce your chances of getting seasonal depression this winter 1) Make the most of the sunlight available Open the blinds to maximize the amount of sun exposure and get outside when the sun is out. Use Google weather instead of the news forecast. The advantage of this is by clicking the numbers along the line you can get predictions throughout the day in three hour increments. By doing this you can maximize your time planned outside as often it will not rain all day and even though it could be forecasted to rain with a rain icon the chance of it actually raining may be low enough and worth the risk of going outside. In the screenshot to the left notice how even though it is predicted to rain on Wednesday by clicking on the nineteen we can see there is only a 4% chance of it raining at around 9:00am.
Page 89 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
2) Stay Fit and Social Physical activity and social interaction are the second two most important things that you can do to combat winter depression. Both of these activities release feel good chemicals that are good for your physical and mental health. A great way to kill two birds with one stone is to get involved with indoor team sports. There are a wide variety of indoor sports to play in Adelaide with the most popular being basketball, soccer, cricket and netball. Other options include volleyball, table tennis and ten pin bowling and for the more adventurous among us rock climbing, parkour or roller derby. If you are looking for flexibility, a membership to a 24 hour gym is a good option as well as lap swimming at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre. If you still want to play a team sport but don’t have the flexibility to commit to training and attend every game, Sportivore.com.au is a great option that allows you to attend social pickup games to suit your availability. The competition is fun but competitive and games are often followed by a drink at the pub to cool off.
Page 90 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
“There is no bad bad clo
3) State of Mind It is important that if you are prone to experience seasonal depression that you practice self-awareness and make a conscious effort to adjust your behaviour when you sense you are becoming depressed. The Norwegians embrace the concept of koselig, or “coziness” to help them get through the coldest and darkest of winters. You can do the same by appreciating the contrast of season and to enjoy the things unique to winter.

4) Get amongst it! The weather is often not as bad as we make it out to be and once we get out there are we feel better for it so harden up and remember the adage “There is no bad weather only bad clothing”
d weather only othing”
5) Visit your doctor/Try Light Therapy. If you have tried the above tactics to no avail it would be a good idea to see a doctor who will assess you and recommend further treatments. To save on a trip to the doctor though first it may be worth trying light therapy for yourself as light boxes can be ordered online where you can find recommended usage instructions as well. There is an increasingly growing number of light boxes available with LED lights offing a more compact and cheaper alternative. However it may be a good Idea to still consult with a doctor first to recommend a specific light box and custom treatment plan.

et’s face it... Winter is a season which most of us find tiring and glum. Even on those rare days where the sun decides to shine, we still wish we were in Summer, Spring or even Autumn. So to the sporting demographic, this would be a great way to forget the inclement weather which resides with us for months, and replace it with a healthy and social bonding experience within a baseball competition which is thriving every New Year.
THE BEGINNING OF WINTER BASEBALL IN AUSTRALIA Winter Baseball in South Australia had its origins in the late 1960s when the South Australian Baseball League (SABL) made the decision to change its fixtures to become a predominantly summer sport. This decision was obviously made in the best interests of the game since that nature of baseball is best suited to drier conditions. However, there were a number of people and some clubs that this change did not suit. This included many cricketers who previously could alternate seasons between baseball and cricket.
This great game is only getting better and caters for all ages and genders. In my humble, sports lover opinion, its a great oppitunity to meet new people, create new friends and exercise. A nice distraction from winter, don’t you think!?
Did you know Baseball is second most thriving sport in Australia Sa Baseball provides MLB clubs with new talent every year. MLB clubs often send youth players SA to gain experience.
Not surprisingly, the drive to form a Winter Baseball competition came from one of these clubs. Stan Scarman from the Adelaide University Baseball Club contacted the existing Baseball Clubs and the baseball community seeking expressions of interest in continuing the Winter competition which would stand alone from the South Australian Baseball League now scheduled for the summer months. So in the end, baseball, which is one of the most quickly expanding sports within Australia, now has a place and time for everyone. Baseball in South Australia provides the “sporting type” with a great distraction for the cold gloomy days which rule our lives. So if your plainly and simply a summer person that’s into sport, especially cricket players, why not give it a go.

Its not the end of the world... of Warcraft W
ith World of Warcraft’s (WoW) 13th anniversary coming up in November and the release of patch 7.2 The Tomb of Sargeras I decided I’d share a brief history and some of my ten year journey through Blizzard Entertainments MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) masterpiece. When I first started playing World of Warcraft in 2007 I was just 13 years old. A few friends and I convinced our parents to buy it for us and since then I’ve been in hardcore PvP (Player Versus Player) and raiding guilds and I’ve also been a completely casual player. In the last 10 years I’ve
Page 94 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
been playing the game has evolved into almost a completely different beast then it was when I started. In the last 13 years since World Of Warcraft was released they have released six expansion packs and with those expansions they’ve released new races, new classes, new continents and revamped the original map. With these expansions we’ve travelled to distant worlds ravaged by war, to the frigid wastes of Northrend and to isles shrouded in mist. We’ve travelled through time and to a split dimension only to cause Hell for ourselves. The story telling in World of Warcraft makes you feel like you’re part of the driving force, whether you’re fighting in the ongoing and unending conflict between the games two factions the Horde
and the Alliance, or you’re leading the assault in raids against mad dragons, demon armies and legions of undead. All of this and a fantastic player base that even includes celebrities such as Vin Diesel, Cameron Diaz and Mila Kunis. World of Warcraft is more than just a game, it’s a community that revolves around the game, where anyone can be something more than themselves.
World of Warcraft was released on November 23rd 2004 to coincide with the 10 year anniversary of the Warcraft franchise. WoW was received incredibly well and stores sold out of copies within days. Unfortunately, Blizzard Entertainment wasn’t expecting such an overwhelming response and struggled to keep servers from crashing with the immense load. However they learnt from this and staggered subsequent releases around the world allowing Europe to receive the game before North America and Oceanic regions. As each expansion was released the servers were upgraded to allow for a smoother transition and to handle the load of new and returning players. In October of 2010, World of Warcraft
reached its peak of over 12 million current subscribers; and, in January of 2014, Blizzard Entertainment announced that over 100 million accounts have been made in the games lifetime. World of Warcraft also holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscription. In 2010 it was reported World of Warcraft produced $800 million USD per year from only its North American and European players, which was greater than the GDP of Samoa at the same time and those figures weren’t counting the players from Asia which account for 48% of the games total player base
game was experiencing massive growth and with the addition of rated player versus player Arena battles, people had more to do than ever before. It was in this expansion that the development team introduced Flying into the game so that you were able to purchase your own Fantastical beast to fly around the skies of the first additional continent “Outland”. This expansion also introduced two of the major players in the Burning legion-the Demon Lieutenants Archimonde and Kil’Jaden .
When I bought and started playing World Of Warcraft in 2007 it was near the end of the inaugural expansion “The Burning Crusade”. It was at a time when the
Page 95 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
On the 13th of November 2008, just ten days before their 4th anniversary Blizzard Entertainment released World Of Warcraft’s sophomore expansion “The Wrath of the Lich King”. This went on to sell over 1900 copies a minute equating to a total of 2.8 million copies on its first day of release making it the fastest selling PC game at the time. In this expansion players returned to the world of Azeroth and discovered the frozen wastes of Northrend to confront the undead scourge lead by the Lich
Page 96 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
King Arthas himself. From the moment players landed on the shores of Northrend the feeling of desperation is evident with armies of the scourge leading assaults on both the Alliance and the Horde. With this expansion players fought against constructs made by Gods, confronted creatures of the void (similar to H.P Lovecraft’s Cthulu) and took the fight to the Lich King Arthas the Undead master of the scourge himself laying siege to his citadel, Icecrown. This expansion also introduced a new playable class, the Death knight. Who are group of undead warriors who had broken free of the Lich
Kings control. It was in Wrath of the Lich King that I joined my first Raiding guild and experienced what it was like to lead the assault against the enemies of Azeroth.
On December 7th 2010 Blizzard Entertainment released “Cataclysm” World of Warcraft’s Third expansion. It was with this expansion that the world of Azeroth was changed forever with the arrival of the Mad Dragon Deathwing. The world haemorrhaged causing floods and earthquakes changing the landscape. This expansion introduced WoW’s first underwater zone which received mixed reviews among players. Along with the underwater zone, 2 new races were
released. The first of which are the Worgen a race of men who had fallen to a curse turning them into beasts forcing them to leave their walled city of Gilneas. The other race that was introduced to the game was the Goblins who originally sold weapons and supplies to both sides during the first and second wars. It was after the events of the cataclysm that a faction of goblins joined the Horde. It was in this expansion players helped restore balance to a broken world by fighting Ragnaros, the elemental lord of fire. Players also fought Deathwing, a
dragon whose only intent was to bring about the end of days. It was around this time I met an incredible family of 3 that all played WoW together and a friend of theirs who I now live with. These are just some of the lasting friendships I’ve made through World of Warcraft.
Page 97 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
On the 25th of September 2012 Blizzard Entertainment released “Mists of Pandaria” World Of Warcrafts first completely original venture. Unlike the other expansions before it Mists of Pandaria was the first expansion to allow the development team to go in their own direction. This expansion was like vegemite you either loved it or hated it. Mists of Pandaria focused on an
The fifth expansion to Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft was “Warlords of Draenor” released on the 13th of November 2014. Continuing with the events of the Mists of Pandaria players were sent back 35 years in the past to the land of Draenor which would eventually become Outland. This expansion first focused on quelling the Iron Hordes invasion of Azeroth and then defeating the Fel Horde lead by
Page 98 | Jul 2017 | Wrapped
Asian inspired art style. This expansion also brought with it a new race and class, the Pandaren, who are the only race able to select either the Alliance or the Horde for their faction. This expansion focused on the old gods which are Lovecraftian horrors and creatures called the Sha that embody negative emotions such as doubt, anger, fear and pride. I remember when this expansion was released
Gul’dan. This expansion was poorly received when compared to its predecessors. The time travel plot was seen as a last ditch effort to keep the game alive. Warlords of Draenor remains the only expansion I took a hiatus from. Despite this with continued development the expansion grew in popularity. While veteran players were disapproving of the direction the story had taken it was refreshing to be able to see what
a friend and I sat in the kitchen of his girlfriend’s house and played for three days, only stopping to eat and go to work.
the planet of Draenor looked like before it had been ravaged by war and demon invasions. In the ending days of Warlords of Draenor the world of Azeroth was plagued by demon invasions as they prepared their assault. Unbeknownst to players at the time the direction the story had taken was to set up for their most recent expansion, Legion.
On August 30th 2016 at 16:00 AEST Blizzard Entertainment restarted their servers and their Sixth expansion “Leigon” was live. After fighting off demon invasions across the continents of Azeroth, players took the fight to Gul’dan and his demon army on the Broken shore, part of the new continent released for Legion. The new class released for legion was the Demon Hunters, a group of elves whose mission for vengeance against demons resulted in them taking the demons powers and using them in the fight against the
Legion. With this expansion Blizzard Entertainment has constantly released new content and players have been returning in droves. So far in Legion players have quelled the incursion of the old gods, aided in an Elvish rebellion and are preparing to launch an offensive on the Tomb of Sargeras.
In the foreseeable future I expect Blizzard Entertainment will allow players to bring the war to the Legion and attempt to reclaim the planet of Argus. But this also leaves open the possibility of an expansion that will have players delve into the Lovecraftian elements of the game with a possible Old Gods expansion. Despite the games 13 years of history, World of Warcraft is still going strong with Blizzard Entertainment continuing to develop new content for the game, along with companion apps for both Android and iOS. I hope that we see World of Warcraft continue strongly while players continue the fight.
