Michigan State Firemen’s Association

T

BY DONNA THOMA

he Michigan State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) was founded in 1875 as a nonprofit organization as a way for firefighters to share experiences, learn from each other, and to socialize. The MSFA is proud to represent the Michigan fire service and be a provider to the needs of firefighters by being a distributor of fire service training manuals and books, providing training opportunities with our Spring Fire School, Fall Fire School and National Fire Academy “Michigan Weekend” in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

In addition to being a means of education/training of firefighters, MSFA supports fire departments across the state. This is especially important when a department loses 6

a firefighter in the call of duty.

Working in conjunction with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Washington, DC, MSFA provides resources to assist the families of fallen firefighters in rebuilding their lives and their departments, as well as working with the Fire Service community to reduce firefighter injury and deaths. The United States Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in 1992. The Michigan State Firemen’s Association also offers line of duty death services through their L.A.S.T. Team and funeral kits. Executive board members and past presidents also serve as advocates across the nation. For additional information on the MSFA visit msfassoc.org.

Festival to feature new training classes New to this year’s Firemen’s Memorial Festival are classes to help visiting firefighters obtain additional state certifications. Classes include:

• Michigan Propane Gas is holding live fire propane training on Friday, Sept. 17. • 2 The Rescue is holding Career Survival camp on Friday, Sept. 17. • State fire marshal is hosting a class on how to “read” smoke and residential tactics on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. Other classes are TBA.

For information on upcoming classes visit firemensmemorial. com or follow Michigan Firemen’s Memorial Festival Committee on Facebook.

The

Memorial

N

early 50 years ago, the idea of creating a statue honoring Michigan Firefighters, as well as where to place it was being considered.

In the end, the Forest Fire Experiment Station site was chosen due to its proximity to I-75; central location between St. Ignace and southern Michigan; to increase tourism in the area; and that it may help improve the economy in the county. The DNR donated the property for the construction n of the memorial and parking. Detroit craftsman, Edward Chesney, created the 12-foot, one ton statue and Sept. 20, 1980 the statue was dedicated.

8

A public park portion was completed June of 1984 and dedicated September 15, 1984. Dotted with antique fire fighting apparatus, picnic tables, and benches, it allows visitors space to enjoy the tranquility of the northern Michigan forest, in the shadow of a memorial to those who give their all in service to others. Names of firefighters who pass in the line of duty are engraved, at no cost, to the base of the statue. Names and the departments of other former or current firefighters who have passed of other causes, may be added to the wall at a nominal cost of $100. For information contact Cliff Messing at 989-670-3751 or delfire1953@gmail.com.

“The statue and memorial service are a way to honor firefighters in the State of Michigan, both volunteer and full time, who have given their time in this service to their

communities,” said Paul Wayco, past president of the Michigan State Firemen’s Association. Upkeep for the site is provided by donations. For several years, SPL/ SGT Dale Hardy, State Police officer and State Fire Inspector, offered coffee and donuts at the Memorial site for a donation towards upkeep. The red “Dale’s Coffee Shack” at the site, was donated by a family member in Dale’s honor at his passing.

To obtain information regarding Spring/Fall school, membership assistance, help with funeral arrangements for line of duty and fire service related deaths, contact MSFA at office@msfassoc.net or visit msfassoc.org. Donations for the Memorial site upkeep may be sent to Cliff Messing – 8826 E. Huron Line Road – Ruth, MI 48470. Please note: All applications for the Firemen’s Memorial or wall need to be postmarked by Aug. 1, 2021.

C.O.O.R. Christmas

S

chool was closed, Santa and Mrs. Claus had a super busy schedule.

School visits were curtailed, and many other conflicts seemed to try to derail the COOR Christmas party. If nothing else, COVID 19 has taught us that there is no “normal!” The Michigan Firemen’s Memorial Festival Committee still wanted to be able to do something in support of those children and the school. Jan and Emil Meissner,

two very special “elves,” purchased and donated Santa stockings to be filled with stuffed animals, coloring books, and crayons. The COOR Christmas Committee contacted Miss Holly at COOR to brainstorm about ways to bring some Christmas cheer to the kids. As a result of that meeting we decided to purchase items for the classrooms! That way, all students would benefit, even when school was limited to ZOOM-type calls.

Pictured (front, l-r) Sabrina Wilks, Emily Gubancsik and Melisa Akers, (back) Meranda Homan, Caitlin Moore, Tracy Hendershott, Thalma Hibbard, Ed Thoma and Donna Thoma.

Large puppets, Lego’s, outdoor toys, etc were purchased and delivered. As we understand it, this was also a very big help to the teachers, as some funding had been cut for the 20/21 school year.

While we aren’t sure what

the 2021 event will look like, we’ve learned to be a bit more creative.

The Firemen’s Memorial Committee looks forward to Christmas 2021. Santa and Mrs. Claus are excited to see all the smiling children again as well.

M

Protect your property from fire

ost of northern Michigan can have wild fire danger year round, unless we have several inches of snow on the ground. If you own a home or cabin in northern Michigan, there are certain precautions you should take to keep your lives and property safe from wildfire. Whether a permanent, part time resident, or part time camper, it is important to assess your property or camp area. Some important steps are as follows: STEP 1 -

Assessing your property • Do you border forested or brushy areas? • Is there a substantial amount of tall, or leafy vegetation near your home or camp structure? • Do tree limbs extend over your structures? • Do you have a woodpile in close proximity to your structures? • Are fuel tanks nearby? • Have you used wood chips or other dried vegetation in your landscaping?

• Is there clear access to your home for firefighters? STEP 2 -

Create a defensible space by dividing your property into three zones: • Clear debris, leaves and brush at least 30 feet out away from all structures on your property. • Keep wood piles, storage sheds with fuel for mowers, gas powered tools, etc, 30-100 feet away, at minimum, from your main structures...home, cabin, garage. • A good rule of thumb is to keep vegetative debris cleaned up at least 100-200 feet away if possible. (Keep leaves raked and removed) Additional fire safe recommendations from the DNR are: • Keep campfires small and do not leave them unattended. Period! • Be sure to always have a bucket of water/garden hose and a shovel nearby to put the fire out. • Be certain all fires and barbeques

are completely extinguished. Stir water into the embers, turning unburned pieces of wood/charcoal over to wet the underside. (Charcoal can stay hot for many hours, be sure to keep children away from expended coals.) • Be courteous and obey local ordinances for burn permits, and fireworks. • Avoid dropping sparkler wires into wooden garden mulch. Sparklers burn at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. • Putting used sparklers and spent fireworks into a bucket of water ensures that they are completely out. • Fireworks will easily ignite grass or wooded areas and should be used only in areas free of vegetation.

• When improperly used, fireworks that explode or fly into the air are the cause of many wildfires each year. • Using fireworks on public property is prohibited without authorization.

FINAL BELL

James W. Stender The Michigan Firemen’s Memorial Festival Committee (MFMFC) lost a vital member on Jan. 15, 2021. James “Jim” Stender, was born Aug. 17, 1940 in Durand, Michigan. Jim and his first wife Carol, moved to Prudenville in 1975, where they established the Autumn Valley Crematory and Vault Company. The spring of 1980, Jim, then president of the Roscommon County Firemen’s Association, heard a statue honoring Michigan firemen was to be placed in Roscommon County. The Michigan State Firefighters Association contacted the Roscommon Firefighters Association for ideas to entertain the men and women

attending the dedication of the statue.

Jim approached the County Fire Chief’s Association for their input. A committee of 22 firefighters, businessmen, and DNR personnel organized that first event at the DNR airport. They also organized a parade in which fire vehicles from across the state traveled from Roscommon to the Memorial site.

Jim Stender, Bruce Lorion, Larry Schmidt, and Roy Milnes organized the Jim Michigan Firemen’s Memorial Stender Festival Committee in 1982. He served on the board of the organization until his passing.

Jim was always interested in improving fire fighting techniques/ safety, and attended and participated

in many classes, including the National Fire Training Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Jim was a longtime member of the Denton Township Fire department, where he served as lieutenant, organizing much of the training held at the Fire Training Grounds, where the festival is located.

His wife, Carol, was very active with the committee as well, where she served as treasurer until her passing in 2009. Jim later married Lynda Atwood on Oct. 2, 2010.

Jim is survived by his wife of 10 years, Lynda; Sons Russ and Rod (Misty) Stender; Two granddaughters: Ashley Stender and Rachael Stender; Two Greatgrandchildren: Callie Johnson and Landyn Slater; Brother Jerry (Marlene) Stender and several nieces and nephews.

Protecting firefighters from PFAS Poisons that harm people and pets should be banned

M

ichigan has a long history with flame retardants.

In 1973, cattle across the state were accidentally contaminated with a fire retardant called Polybrominated biphenyl, or PBB, when workers at a factory that manufactured the product mistakenly placed bags of the highly toxic chemical in a shipment of livestock nutritional supplements.

The flame-retardant chemical was mixed with cattle feed and distributed to farmers across the state. Tens of thousands of cattle and poultry got sick and were exterminated and buried. The chemical plant that produced the contaminant closed in 1978, and the site was placed on the federal Superfund list five years later because of contamination in the Pine River, which abuts the property, and in groundwater. Cleanup was still ongoing as of a couple years ago.

While the PBB chemical flame retardants of the 1970’s was found to make cattle and poultry sick, other toxic flame retardants were manufactured and sold to protect people, including firefighters, from being burned if materials caught fire. As a result, cancer is the number one killer of America’s firefighters. In 2010, a NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)

studies about 30,000 firefighters from across the country. The results showed that firefighters have higher rates of the digestive, oral, respiratory, and urinary systems cancers than the general U.S. population, including being twice as likely to develop testicular or prostate cancer, as well as nonHodgkin Lymphoma. Among female firefighters, the rate of breast cancer is six times the national average.

“Firefighters are some of the best advocates for policy change regarding these products. It is time to ban the use of toxic chemicals to create consumer goods and to ban the use of toxic chemicals to extinguish fires caused by the burning of these consumer goods”

The adverse health effects are now known to include cancer, neurodevelopmental and reproductive toxicity. Studies show these chemicals build up in human bodies over time and do not break down even after being diluted and spread out in nature. So what is being done? In 2017, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued guidance

to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to protect the health of consumers, especially children, from exposure to organohalogen flame retardant chemicals found in infant or toddler products, upholstered furniture, mattresses and mattress pads, and plastic casings of electronics. In 2018, the US Congress passed a bipartisan bill in 2018 called the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act creating a national registry for firefighters diagnosed with cancer. An organization called Safer States saferstates.org reports that there are 44 new policies in 14 states and more in the works across the country as people take action to protect themselves, their children, firefighters and even their pets from being exposed to these chemicals.

Firefighters should be able to focus on saving lives without fear of illness and cancer caused from their work. It’s not too much to ask.

Attention Gold Badge collectors

2021 will be another great year for all collectors of Firemen’s Memorial badges!

What is a Gold Badge? A Gold Badge is a special badge we issue each year. These badges are printed in gold and are auctioned off to the highest bidder. They are the first ten badges printed (110) plus one for the year of the festival (2021). Each badge comes with an Official Badge Certificate to certify the buyer’s name, number of the badge won, date badge was purchased, and the date and year of that annual festival. The auction will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 inside the Big Red Barn.

Add to your collection or purchase a badge in honor of a fallen firefighter. Certificates will have the name of the purchaser or honoree, so it can be placed on an honor wall, or near the patch collections in your fire station. Norm Yoder has again offered to be our auctioneer. Monies raised from the Gold Badge Auction helps support the festival. We look forward to seeing you there!

Fallen 9-11 firefighters to be honored as part of ceremony “Dedicated to the members of that unselfish fraternity of men and women who hold devotion to duty above personal risk, unceasingly (finding) better ways of protecting the lives, homes and property of their fellow citizens from the ravages of fire and other disasters.” The 2021 Firemen’s Memorial ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 18 and is scheduled to feature speakers Ed Sedlacek, president of the Roscommon Firemen’s Memorial Festival, and State of Michigan Fire Marshal Kevin Sellmyer. Cliff Messing of the

memorial said the fallen firefighters from 9-11 will be honored at the event, and the names of fallen Michigan firefighters on the wall will be read out loud as well. Upkeep for the memorial site, which is undergoing several improvements, is provided by donations. For many years, SGT Dale Hardy of the Michigan State Police offered coffee and donuts for a donation towards upkeep. The red “Dale’s Coffee Shack” at the site, was donated by a family member in Dale’s honor at his passing. Coffee will be available around 7 a.m.

Firemen’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, whenever flames may rage, give me the strength to save some life.

Whatever be its age, help me to embrace a little child before it is too late, or some older person from the horrors of that fate. Enable me to be alert to

hear the weakest shout and quickly and efficiently put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and put in my best to guard my neighbor and protect his property. And if according to your will I have to lose my life, please watch over my children and my wife.
