THE UNTOLD STORY :

ROKAN BLOCK The Rokan Block, which has an area of 6,264 km2, has two of the largest oil fields, namely Minas and Duri. Both fields are the biggest oil fields because of its production. The Minas Field, which has produced up to 4.5 billion barrels of oil since it began production in the 1970s, is the largest oil field in Southeast Asia. Minas 'Brother', the Duri Field, is also one of the largest oil fields ever found in the Southeast Asia region. This field produces unique crude oil known as Duri Crude. In 2016, it was still able to produce up to 256,000 bpd of oil, almost a third of the total national oil production at this time. Chevron has held the Block Rokan contract since 1971 or 50 years ago. Why government choose pertamina to take over rokan block? Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arcandra Tahar said that the proposal made by Pertamina was “much better” than the one made by CPI, the local unit of United States energy firm Chevron. He said the government's assessment was based on four factors — the size of the signature bonus, a five-year working commitment, the government's take of the block's revenue and the split demanded by the applicants. Pertamina promised a US$784 million signature bonus, a $500 million five-year working commitment covering exploration activities and $57 billion in potential state-revenue over a 20-year period. Production cost of Rokan Block will be cut up to $1b The cut is expected to help the government's effort in reducing the operational cost of the block. The Rokan Block is currently operating under a cost recovery scheme that will shift to

a gross-split scheme in 2021, when the block is to be taken over by state-owned energy holding company Pertamina from PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI), the local subsidiary of US oil and gas giant Chevron Corporation. The gross-split scheme has been applied to all new production-sharing contracts (PSCs) since early 2017. The government has inked 25 gross-split PSCs for onstream oil and gas blocks since June 2018. Provisions for profit sharing on the Rokan Block? In general, the government revenue sharing scheme in the Duri Field is smaller than in the non-Duri Field. The reason is, Duri Field produces heavy oil and has an advanced oil recovery (EOR) steam flood. the portion of government in Duri Field are 35 percent and contractors are 65 percent for oil products. Especially for gas products, the government portion are 30 percent and contractors are 70 percent. The contractor's part is included with the basic components, variable components and the addition of eight percent profit sharing according to the discretion given by the government. The government also sets a different profit sharing scheme in Minas Field because an EOR chemical injection project will be carried out. The new profit sharing provisions will be listed in the new Plan of Development from Pertamina. The government has agreed on the terms and conditions of the new Block Rokan contract. After that, the production sharing contract (PSC) with a split gross scheme will be arranged.

n 31st July 2018, Pertamina gets Rokan Oil Block from Chevron, the major oil producer in Indonesia which has been operating in Rokan Block for 50 years. Total area of this block is about 2 6.264 km and one of Rokan's fields, Minas, is the biggest field in Southeast Asia which once reached production rate about 1.000.000 bpd. Based on SKK Migas' Data in late April, 2018 showed that Rokan Block's oil production stood at 210.280,06 BOPD and 24,26 MMSCFD for gas production. Pertamina prosposed US $784 million signature bonus and promised a $500 million to government. By taking Rokan block from Chevron, Pertamina will claim 60% of Indonesia's national oil and gas production in 2021.

Mr. Dedy Kristanto

Reservoir Engineering Lecturer

of UPN “V” Yogyakarta

Chevron will not operate Rokan Block in 2021 after their proposal to extend the contract had been rejected by the Goverment of Indonesia (GOI). GOI decided to give the Rokan Block to Pertamina that came up with better offer. The biggest question is can Pertamina maintain the production of Rokan Block as same as Chevron nowadays? are Indonesia's Man Power and Technology ready to operate Rokan Block?. To help you answearing the question, we decided to ask the opinion of Mr. Dedy Kristanto as Reservoir Engineering Lecturer of Petroleum Engineering UPN'V' Yogyakarta. “The key is in the management itsefl. Our people and technology are something that we should not worry about. They are ready to operate it. Indonesia people is competent enough to operate the Rokan Block. But, It goes back again into the management. Work culture should be good. The management should be good. Do the evaluation and monitoring and don't forget to respect each other.” Said Mr. Dedy on his office.

E-MAGAZINE VOL.2

ractured Basement is igneous rock that undergoes fractures so that it can become one of the hydrocarbon reservoir types. Faults and fractures are important structures of the reservoir which cause secondary porosity to form. The discovery of a very large amount of hydrocarbon potential has been found in reservoir rocks which have naturally experienced fractures or fractures at this time. The discovery of basement fractured which applies as reservoir rock containing hydrocarbons has been known for several years, but generally it is classified as a non-productive reservoir, and has failed to attract explorers. Often categorized as "uneconomic potential", exploration with drilling still does not produce. At present, Indonesia itself has a basement fractured reservoir that is ready to be explored further regarding the hydrocarbon content contained in the reservoir. Basement fractured reservoir in Indonesia is found in the western part of Java and southern Sumatra, namely in the Bekasi and Bayung Lencir regions. A few days ago there was news that SKK MIGAS had successfully explored the Bayung Lencir area. In the oil and gas field in Bayung Lencir, the KBD-2X exploration well is a basement fracture which is one of the exploration targets that has the potential for giant recovery. This activity has been proven to produce hydrocarbons in several oil and gas fields in the South Sumatra Basin. Cooperation Contractor (KKKS) Talisman Sakakernang B.V. under Repsol Holding again showed its commitment in exploring Indonesia. Repsol has started drilling the KBD-2X exploration well in Tampang Baru Village, Musi Banyuasin District - South Sumatra which was plotted on August 20, 2018. The exploration drilling target is Fractured Basement. On August 29, 2018 a review of KBD-2X well operations was carried out by SKK Migas Planning Deputy Mr. Jaffee Suardin and Head of the Exploration Planning Division, Shinta Damayanti. In the review, the General Manager of Talisman Sakakemang B.V was present. Fransisco Gea, Exploration Manager Talisman Sakakernang B.V. David Ramos and also the local government. And it can be concluded that the accumulation of oil from the drilling of the KBD-2X exploration well with that much potential, from a source was not obtained from intentions, the possibility of reserves in basement rock fractures such as magnets, further searching and exploration is needed if the aim is at basement fracture reservoir. The existence of further knowledge and research to understand the distribution of fractures and their relationship to the basement reservoir can make the key to improve exploration and production management of these hidden resources.

nEW tECHNOLOGY MANAGED PRESSURE DRILLING

W

hile drilling process we always meet there are several problems which happenand make the failure of it. The problems come from anything, like formation collapse, swelling, loss circulation, pipe sticking, and the others. All of it can c a u s e d kick problem and if it is not handled properly will make failure on the drilling process.

12 NEW TECHNOLOGY

Base on oil field glossary , Kick is physically caused by the pressure in the wellbore being less than that of the formation fluid, this causing flow. This problem can caused blow out if it is not handled as soon as possible. Blow out is the uncontrolled release of crude oil and /or natural gas from an oil well or gas well after pressurecontrol systems have failed. Because of the problem we need to

find the way to prevent by a new technology toincrease the efficiency for drillingprocess. One of the ways is thorough Managed pressure drilling. ManagedPressure Drilling ( M P D) h a s b e e n u s e d around the world to help drill wells where there is a tight mud weight (MW) window Tripping and during connections. MPD actually improved some old ideas from underbalance drilling.

E-MAGAZINE VOL.2

Source : www.nov.com

According to the IADC, MPD is an “adaptive process used to precisely control the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore. The goal is to ascertainthe downhole pressure environment limits and to manage the annular pressure profile accordingly”. MPD can reduce the possibility that those problems occurs and therefore allows drilling through the un-drillable in

conventional way formations, helps to reduce Non-Productive Time. Basic tools required to conduct MPD are a rotating control device (RCD), drill string nonreturn valves and dedicated choke manifold. Managed Pre s s u re Dr i l l i n g i s divided into two categories: a “reactive” – when well is planned

to drill with conventional wisdomcasing set points to acts better if it will be a well control situation; and a “proactive” – when well is planned from the beginning to be drilled using MPD, and drilling programs takes full advantages of the ability to use this technology by precisely managed pressure profiles through the wellbore.

He stated that our country will become the biggest country who operates geothermal power plant since the Sarulla project began in Tapanuli Utara. Around 70 students from petroleum, geological, mining, geophysical, environmental and chemical engineering attend this event to fulfill their passion in unconventional energy.

In the questions and answer sessions, Ms. Lintang Hartanta, a petroleum engineering student, asked about the development of unconventional energy in Indonesia nowadays to Mr. Brahmantyo. “Unfortunately, the results of exploration activities have not considered to be satisfying, shown by Reserve Replacement Ratio of oil and gas in 2017 only reached 60%. The era of democratization and regional autonomy took a result that more and more stakeholders demand engagement; the upstream oil and gas industry is no longer treated in special way”, said the speaker. In the end, the speaker gave the suggestion to increase the exploration and exploitation unconventional energy, so that the cost would be cheaper, because of the satisfying findings.
