Each year scholarships are awarded to children of exceptional talent joining the School into the Top Year (Year 6), First Form (Year 7), Second Form (Year 8) or Third Form (Year 9). In due course, scholarships will be awarded to children joining the School at Sixth Form level (Year 12). Candidates are assessed through test, examination or observation, interview and reference. Scholarship awards may be made either for evidence of a high level of attainment and promise or exceptional specialist aptitude. Uppingham Cairo awards scholarships to candidates who show excellence in the following fields: Academic, Music, Art, Sport, Textiles (Fashion Design), Design & Technology, Drama The Thring Award is awarded to candidates who demonstrate all round excellence
2. Limitations
Successful candidates should not expect to hold awards in more than one discipline. Candidates are not permitted to sit scholarships in more than two disciplines.
3. Awards
Uppingham Cairo is proud of its moral commitment to widening participation in the School, and applies Scholarship Awards in line with the policies of Uppingham School in the UK. To do so, we use as much of our funding as we can to enable as many young people as possible to benefit from an Uppingham Cairo education. For that reason, scholarship awards would not ordinarily exceed 25% of the fees.
At Uppingham Cairo a candidate may only hold one scholarship award at any one time so that they can specialise in their area of talent. This does not preclude them from participating in other areas of school life, however, the rich additional provision of each of our scholarship programmes requires pupils to manage their time judiciously within their field of expertise.
All candidates must have passed the standard academic entrance assessment and have been offered a place at the School prior to entering the scholarship process.
4. Age Limit Candidates will normally be under 14 on or close to 1 September in the year of entry. In assessing merit, the ages of candidates is taken into consideration.
Further information about the Art Scholarship may be obtained from the Head of Art, Mr Thomas Von Broen (tvonbroen@uppinghamcairo.co m)
What does Uppingham Cairo look for in a potential Scholar?
What is involved in the selection process?
An Art Scholar must demonstrate the ability to produce work independently. They should have a passion for creating work that relies on their own imagination and curiosity to explore new materials and artists. It is expected they have a strong command of the formal elements (e.g. tone, proportions, colour and form).
A full day in the Leonardo where candidates are set a number of tasks to show their ability to problem solve and sketch creative solutions.
There is also an interview with the Head of Art where candidates can show the work produced for the set task and other independently led projects that they have worked on.
What are the expectations of a Scholar?
An Art Scholar will be expected to be a presence in the Leonardo, working on independently led projects and helping other pupils in the range of extra-curricular activities that take place. They should be active in looking for competitions and community projects.
All Scholars will be expected to take the subject at GCSE and in the Sixth Form.

Set Tasks (external)
Candidates are required to complete the following two tasks and to bring these with them when they are interviewed at Uppingham Cairo.
Transforming the Boring Artists have a unique view of the world. They can find extraordinary beauty in the seemingly boring and mundane. They draw inspiration from everyday objects and events, stripping them of their ordinary functions and transforming them into works of art.
Candidates should demonstrate their own creative response to this broad subject theme. It is important that candidates create their own imagery and do not rely too heavily on images from secondary sources such as the internet. They should make some observational drawings/sketches and explore different media e.g. photography, collage, sculpture, film, printmaking or textiles. They should show how they have been inspired by artists or designers.
Independent project
Candidates should make an entirely independent piece of work and will be prepared to speak about it and what interests and stimulates them about the piece they have made.
Assessment:
(undertaken on the assessment day)
