Annual Report 2023
WELCOME A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR I am delighted to share the Foundation Annual Review of the past year with you. By way of introduction, I have enjoyed a long and happy association with Uppingham, beginning with my days as a pupil in Fircroft. My children have attended the School, and I currently serve on the Board of Trustees and as the Foundation Board Chair. 2022-2023 was an exciting year for the Foundation, with the launch of our first major regular giving campaign – Changemakers. The motivation behind the campaign is to harness the financial support of the Uppingham community, OUs and parents, through small regular donations. Together the cumulative effect of many small donations can be transformative and so I would encourage you to contribute what you can, at whatever level.
Philanthropy has been a core value of Uppingham since its founding in 1584 when Archdeacon Johnson founded Uppingham as a free grammar school for talented, local boys. Whilst the landscape has changed significantly since then, the same spirit of philanthropy underpins the School and the work of the Foundation remains key to the School’s future success. My thanks to all who those have contributed so generously to support the work of the Foundation over the past year. I would also like to extend my thanks to our Foundation Board members – a cohort of engaged and vital OUs and current parents who freely give of their time to further the aims and ambitions of the School. And finally, my thanks to the Foundation Team, the voice of philanthropy within the School, many of whom you will know through their presence at events and OU gatherings. I will look forward to seeing you at events and around School in the coming year.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR I recently marked 21 years at Uppingham and it’s been remarkable to see the changes at the School over the last two decades. Arriving as I did just after the switch to being fully co-educational, the investment in both facilities and people has transformed the place for the better in so many ways. The teaching of sport, science, the arts, music and drama has been enhanced with the introduction of superb modern facilities, and dozens of pupils have had the chance to benefit from world-class teaching thanks to generous bursarial support. None of these developments could have happened without the philanthropic support of the Uppingham community, both OUs and parents.
It is a blessing that the major capital programme of the last twenty years has reduced the need for significant construction in these more challenging times. Our prime focus, other than the regeneration of the Upper Pavilion, is the Changemakers campaign, aimed at creating a sustainable fund to support talented but financially disadvantaged pupils over the next decade. Every single bursary the Foundation supports will change a young person’s life and we have seen what a positive impact this philanthropy can have. Please do consider becoming a Changemaker with a regular gift, large or small. Together, with the combined contributions of OUs and parents, Trustees and staff, we can change the futures for many deserving children. I would like to finish off by thanking the many, many supporters with whom I have engaged over the last 21 years. Your generosity has been incredible. Patrick Mulvihill Development Director

BURSARIES Making education accessible is woven into the fabric of Uppingham, dating right back to the founding of the School by Archdeacon Johnson in 1584. Archdeacon Johnson founded Uppingham as a free grammar school for local boys who showed academic promise and potential but lacked the means to access education. Today we continue this philanthropic tradition by creating equal opportunities for talented and able children through the provision of the Uppingham bursaries programme. The bursaries programme is an integral part of the Foundation’s work. Since 1999, £4.3 million has been raised to support bursary pupils across the School. Through the generous support of OUs and parents we are able to remove the financial barriers for talented individuals who show passion, drive and ambition. We are able to empower pupils from all walks of life to reach their potential, by giving them the freedom and support to explore their interests and encourage their individuality. Over the last 15 years the Foundation has funded 72 pupils to Uppingham on bursaries. This figure will continue to grow as we extend our support to more pupils and open our doors even wider. The work of our Outreach Manager focuses on building relationships with schools and academies in challenging areas within Leicester to identify those pupils who may benefit from an Uppingham education. The reaction from the local community to this engagement has been warm, positive and encouraging and has produced a steady flow of pupils visiting our campus and exploring what opportunities may lie ahead.
“To create opportunities for young people from all walks of life and all backgrounds is a staggeringly important vision for the future.” Dr Richard Maloney, Headmaster
“She has been supported in Uppingham by her teachers who helped her grow her passion for writing. Uppingham has opened her character to learn and share her passion. I have loved watching my daughter grow in character, adapting to every obstacle put before her.” Bursary pupil parent

Particular thanks go to the Headmaster, for his ambition in making this partnership a reality, and Iain Hendry, for his willingness to persist in getting it off the ground. We look forward to a bright future with Uppingham and to creating more exciting opportunities for our pupils and staff. In all, we anticipate up to eight pupils from Castle Mead Academy may apply for places in the Uppingham Sixth Form, in September 2024.” Tom Hague Principal, Castle Mead Academy, Leicester

CHANGEMAKERS A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER This year we launched a philanthropic initiative which I hope will be truly transformative and, in time, becomes a part of Uppingham’s social impact which makes us all very proud. Changemakers is our regular giving programme which supports deserving young people to study at Uppingham.
Rebecca, L 16 Former Bursary Beneficiary At the age of 15, Rebecca was at a Leicester secondary school facing a number of challenges. She had many responsibilities at home which were holding her back from exploring her full academic potential. Receiving a bursary to attend Uppingham Sixth Form turned her life around. In her own words, Rebecca says: “If I was to encapsulate what the bursary did for me, it simply changed everything. The bursary completely and utterly changed the trajectory of my life, of my future. Not only academically, professionally but also personally.” Following a stint overseas volunteering with the Karen Hill Tribes in Thailand, Rebecca is currently studying for a degree in International Development at Sussex University. To hear more about Rebecca’s story please scan the QR code.
Our aim is to harness the power of the entire Uppingham community, be that past pupils, past parents, current parents, and friends of Uppingham. We want to use our collective power to transform lives on behalf of teenagers who do not yet have access to Uppingham’s educational experience.
Robert, SH 06 Former Bursary Beneficiary
We would like as many people connected with the Uppingham community as possible to donate a small amount each month to support our regular giving programme for bursaries. No amount is too small because we hope so many people will be a permanent part of our campaign.
“I always knew I wanted to have a career on the stage. Coming to Uppingham with the amazing facilities, I was able to grow and develop, not only as a person, but as a performer.
Whatever your stage in life, we hope you will join our appeal. Working together gives us much greater impact and our collective power has the ability to truly transform many lives. Uppingham’s foundation is charitable, and philanthropy should be at the heart of our endeavour. We have a moral obligation to identify talented young people from less advantaged backgrounds and enable them to join our school. Moreover, boarding fees have become unaffordable to many families, and we know people will face financial challenges in the coming years. Consequently, our collective support becomes even more important. If, together, we enable hundreds of children to attend Uppingham who would not have otherwise been able to, we will have done a huge amount of good. Many of you have already contributed and, on behalf of the young people who have benefited from your generosity, thank you. Dr Richard Maloney Headmaster
Since its launch just a few months ago, Changemakers has generated donations ranging from £2 a month to £10,000 a year with total projected income, including pledges currently standing at almost £300,000. What an astonishing start to the campaign. Thanks to this generous support, many young people will be given the opportunity to grow and flourish, to pursue their passions and explore their capabilities. 8

Annual Report 2023
The stage was set for local boy and aspiring actor Robert, when a bursary gave him the chance to shine in the spotlight at Uppingham.
My time at Uppingham did shape me into the person I am today. I was encouraged to release my inhibitions, try new things and push my boundaries.” Upon graduating Robert went on to study Musical Theatre at the London Studio Centre and has been working in musical theatre ever since. He has performed in many musical greats including Cats, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 42nd Street and many more. To hear more about Robert’s story please scan the QR code. Nayomi, J 09 Former Bursary Beneficiary Focused and ambitious, Uppingham gave Nayomi the opportunity to be independent and step outside of her comfort zone. Having grown up not knowing anyone who had experienced life at a boarding school, it was a big step into unfamiliar territory. “There comes a responsibility with being a recipient of a bursary. And it’s a responsibility that I take very seriously, and I never want to take it for granted and want to make the most of the opportunity that it’s afforded me. If I was able to meet someone who contributed to my bursary, firstly I would say an enormous and very obvious thank you.” Nayomi graduated from the University of Bath with a BSc in Chemistry and decided to pursue a career as a lawyer. She is currently working as a successful lawyer, with her sights set on becoming Partner one day. To hear more about Nayomi’s story please scan the QR code.
The Changemakers campaign will give more people like Rebecca, Robert and Nayomi the gift of an Uppingham education long into the future. To support the campaign and become a Changemaker please scan the QR code:

THE UPPER RENOVAT IONS
A major renovation project is currently underway at The Upper Pavilion. The Upper has served as the focal point of cricket at Uppingham since it was built 100 years ago in 1923. Many of our OU community will remember long sunny days spent enjoying the beautiful game with the beloved Pavilion providing shelter and refreshments as required! However, time has taken its toll and the Pavilion no longer meets the needs of young cricketers. As a result, the School is making the biggest investment in cricket in our lifetime. With guidance from the Uppingham Rovers, the ECB and others, the Upper Pavilion is undergoing a major refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory and to ensure its future for the next 100 years. The refurbishment encompasses a full internal and external refit, from the foundations to the roof, lovingly restoring aspects lost over time such as the balcony and clock as well as providing modernised changing rooms and catering facilities. The viewing terrace will be expanded, and the historic panels and long table in the Club Room carefully restored. The results will provide pupils, spectators and the Rovers with a refreshed fit-for-purpose facility that meets the needs of contemporary cricket for both boys and girls. The new facility will be ready for the 2024 season. If you would like to find out more please scan the QR code:
10 Annual Report 2023
“I’m really looking forward to seeing the Upper Pavilion once it has been completed. The project is going to bring the pavilion up to the modern standards required for hosting cricket, whilst maintaining the beauty and tradition of the pavilion when it was initially built. It will make the Upper one of the premier grounds in the area, ready to host not only school and OU fixtures, but also representative cricket.” Rob Taylor Director of Cricket, Uppingham
“It was fantastic to have the opportunity to visit the Upper recently and have a look at the pavilion and see the progress on the major refurbishment of the whole structure which includes the rebuilding of the balcony structure which will be a fantastic place to watch the cricket from. I’ve no doubt the standard of work by local craftsmen will mean the facility will be enjoyed for another 100 years (it was originally built in 1923). As an OU and current President of the Rovers it’s exciting to see the project in progress and this together with the appointment of Rob Taylor as Director of Cricket confirms the emphasis the school places on their sport. There is no better place than the Upper to play and watch cricket and 2024 will be an exciting one for all involved and I very much look forward to watching matches there and to enjoying the facility in all its glory” Hedley Stroud (L 68) President of The Uppingham Rovers

A LASTING LEGACY As the focus of the Foundation turns to the creation of a meaningful bursary fund to enable young people who may otherwise never have access to an Uppingham education, legacies become an increasingly important element of the strategy for building that fund. The Foundation has been fortunate to receive significant legacies from several OUs in recent years, including Michael Pix (L 53) and Captain Percy Kennedy (Hall 28). Here are their stories:
Leaving a gift in your will enables you to donate at a time when you can be certain you no longer need the money and while we naturally all wish for members of our family to be our primary beneficiaries, a charitable legacy need not detract from this and can even bring tax advantages. Such gifts can be inflation-proofed by pledging a percentage of your residual estate rather than a defined sum, which also protects the share destined for other beneficiaries. Legacy gifts do not count toward the nil rate tax band for Inheritance Tax. This can reduce the taxable value of your estate, and leaving 10% or more to charity can further reduce the rate of tax payable on your estate from 40% to 36%.
Michael Pix (L 53) was an exceptional insurance broker, linguist, raconteur and Chairman of J.H. Minet Fine Art & Jewellery Division, from 1984 to 1997 and Willis Faber Dumas Fine Art, Jewellery & Specie from 1998, until his retirement in 2003. Michael re-engaged with the School in the latter years of his life and in 2015 donated a valuable collection of Chinese artefacts to Uppingham, which are on permanent display in the Library. Michael and his wife Jeanne lived in Chinon in the Loire Valley and developed a strong friendship with Jerry Rudman, Uppingham School Archivist. Michael advised Jerry that he was leaving a large bequest to Uppingham which we would receive on the death of Jeanne.
If you would like to learn more, please scan the QR, visit uppinghamfoundation.co.uk/legacy-giving or contact Sam Dewhurst sgd@uppingham.co.uk
After Michael’s death in 2018, Jeanne, donated 46 pieces of Roman glass to Uppingham before she sadly passed away in October 2022. In her will, Jeanne confirmed Michael’s original wishes, and the School received one of their two properties in Chinon along with all its contents, including a considerable library of antique books. We are immensely grateful for this generous legacy left to Uppingham.
LEGACY DONORS Remembered with thanks.
Captain Percy ‘Darby’ Kennedy (Hall 28) was the son of Edward ‘Cub’ Kennedy, breeder of racehorses (including the famous stallion The Tetrarch). The Captain, as he was almost universally known, was always fascinated by aviation and spent his life flying for Imperial Airways and Aer Lingus as well as setting up and running his flight school at Weston in Ireland, where among others he trained George Peppard, the leading man of The Blue Max (1966), to fly a Tiger Moth. At the age of 90 he drove through Uppingham on his way to Spain where he would set up home in Estepona, and this detour to his old school had great consequences. Captain Kennedy decided he would like to support boys and girls wishing to attend Uppingham. Over the next six years he funded seven pupils with donations of almost £500,000. Receiving updates on their progress brought great joy to him. He died aged 101 in Spain and thanks to his love of sport, rugby in particular, a sports scholarship was named in his honour at Uppingham. 12

Michael advised Jerry that he was leaving a large bequest to Uppingham which we would receive on the death of Jeanne.
