BURSARIES Making education accessible is woven into the fabric of Uppingham, dating right back to the founding of the School by Archdeacon Johnson in 1584. Archdeacon Johnson founded Uppingham as a free grammar school for local boys who showed academic promise and potential but lacked the means to access education. Today we continue this philanthropic tradition by creating equal opportunities for talented and able children through the provision of the Uppingham bursaries programme. The bursaries programme is an integral part of the Foundation’s work. Since 1999, £4.3 million has been raised to support bursary pupils across the School. Through the generous support of OUs and parents we are able to remove the financial barriers for talented individuals who show passion, drive and ambition. We are able to empower pupils from all walks of life to reach their potential, by giving them the freedom and support to explore their interests and encourage their individuality. Over the last 15 years the Foundation has funded 72 pupils to Uppingham on bursaries. This figure will continue to grow as we extend our support to more pupils and open our doors even wider. The work of our Outreach Manager focuses on building relationships with schools and academies in challenging areas within Leicester to identify those pupils who may benefit from an Uppingham education. The reaction from the local community to this engagement has been warm, positive and encouraging and has produced a steady flow of pupils visiting our campus and exploring what opportunities may lie ahead.
