Sportsfest By: SUNNY PATRON
UGAD yearns to develop every aspect of its members' wellbeing. That's why this year, we had an Inter-Committee Sportsfest. This sporty event held on December 14, 2013 at Amoranto Sports Complex showcased PUGADeers' skills in sports and strengthened camaraderie between committees. Committees teamed up and battled each other out in games of basketball, volleyball and dodgeball. Members of the alumni also came to join in the fun and played for their committees when they were still in PUGAD. Of course, no sports fest would be complete without the pretty girls of PUGAD who led everyone in cheering for their committees. Any injuries obtained that day were totally worth it because everyone had fun and helped PUGAD become more bonded than before

Psyshock By: Jella Doplayna
ho wants to be the very best like no one ever was? This was the challenge of this year s Psyshock: A pokemon-themed Psych Quiz Bee. This year, teams were encouraged to have a member from every year level since they were to answer questions that ranged from the definition of psychology to social psychology. Five teams gathered at PH 400 last February 21 and they went through three rounds of questions̶Route 17, Zubat Cave, and PUGym. After three rounds, the top two teams had a rival battle with their own PUGADeer Pokemon. In the end, the team of Sam Benavidez, Berni Mariño, Luis Chan, and Miguel Fernando/Drei Valencia emerged victorious and they received the cash prize of P1000. Second place went to the team of Macky Bautista, Ian Agustin, Dan Conception, and Em Bartolome. ++
Rummage Sale By: Simon Malmstrom
s a Pugadeer, we learn that in order to hold certain events, seminars, and fun, worthwhile activities, an organization needs to have funds. The rummage sale during the first semester proved to be profitable so in order to have more funds for all the upcoming expenditures, UP PUGAD Sayk held another one during the second semester. PUGAD had its second rummage sale for the academic year 2013-2014 on January 18, 2014 at Barangay UP Campus. As usual, the second rummage sale was planned and organized by the finance committee. Of course, all Pugadeers were welcome to drop by and help out during the event itself. The event lasted from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. It started off with business going slowly, but before long, the customers started pouring in. It was a bit confusing to say the least. There was plenty of bargaining going on; promos spontaneously being offered to customers who just wouldn t accept the prices being given. A pair of pants, for example, to be sold originally for a certain price, would ultimately be sold for much less; and the pants would come with a shirt or two. Later in the afternoon, business would slow down once more with a few buyers and bargain-hunters coming by now and then. When all was said and done, regardless of the little difficulties that came up, the event was still able to earn PUGAD a profit of nearly 10,000 pesos; not bad, when you take into consideration that apart from time, not much was invested
Medical Mission By: MIKO ABOLA
he Medical Mission was brought back this year, as the guys and gals of Pugad gathered at the covered courts of Barangay UP Campus on the 8th of February. The residents of the community flocked to the venue between eight in the morning and one in the afternoon for the free check-ups. The Medical Mission this year was a special one as it was not one committee s project. The AdHoc committee brought together people who went out of their comfort zones to make the Med Mission happen. The day itself saw many eager Pugadeers helping all the people that came, helping in taking their vitals, guiding them to the right places, and explaining how to take their medicine. It was an opportunity for the Pugadeers to serve, and serve they did.
Poco Calubad PUGAD Sayk grabbed the irst place in the recently concluded Diliman Cup which was held last April 2-‐3 at UP Sunken Garden. Eight different organi-‐ zations played against each other during the competition. They were divi-‐ ded into two different brackets and had a round robin format of tourna-‐ ment. After the round robin, the 1st and 2nd seeds of the different brackets had a crossover match as well as the 3rd and 4th seeds. PUGAD was with JMA, PsychSoc, and AF in one bracket while IE Club, ERG, SEA UP, and EcoSoc were in the other one. After the irst day of games, PUGAD got a 2-‐2 win loss record where PUGAD won against PsychSoc and AF but lost to JMA after the round robin matches. PUGAD also lost to SEA UP after the crossover matches. After the 1st day, PUGAD was the 4th overall seed. PU PUGAD played against IE Club the next day in the quarter inals where PUGAD won and moved on to the semi inals against SEA UP. The semi inals match was a hard fought one as the match was only decided by one point and with that last point; PUGAD went to the inals against JMA. Eventually, PUGAD won and got its irst Diliman Cup Championship which was a big jump from 7th place from the previous year.
Diero Apacible Last February, PUGAD was given a unique opportunity to partici-‐ pate in an inter-‐org slow-‐pitch softball tournament, sponsored by the UP Softball Team. Dozens of the org’s members were excited about the tournament, including myself. Some of our including members were experienced in playing baseball or softball, while some were irst-‐timers. Softball know-‐how didn’t matter; anyone could have gotten in on the fun!
Our irst match was against the UP Diliman Ultimate Organization, or UP DUO. It was a fun game to start the tourna-‐ ment, even though we ended up losing by one point. Our next oppo-‐ poin nents, members of the UP Women’s Football Team, weren’t any easier to go up against. Being in the football team, they were all naturally fast runners. It was another loss for PUGAD, yet we all still had fun playing.
Gillian del Rosario Last January, a couple of our football enthusiasts Last Pugadeers joined the Diliman Football League. This league invited all kinds of people, organiza-‐ tions and teams that are both within and outside the university. The league also featured different kinds of people -‐-‐ the adults, the youth, the women and the men. But all were brought together in the tournament as teammates and as competitors. The Pugad team was led by Drei Valencia, who even through an injury on his foot scored goals. Also part of the team were Micah Alampay, Robin Molas, Macky Camagay, Luis Santos, Jayvee Ramos, Nathan Lim and Gillian del Rosario. With the special participation of Abby Consulta as the team manager. The league was Consulta tough, as the Pugad team encountered and faced football organizations, business companies and other more experienced teams. Nonetheless, it did not stop them from playing and enjoying the game. During huddles, captain Drei Valencia always inspired the team with his motivational and inspiring speech -‐-‐ let's have fun.
Our third match however, brought our irst victory! The UP Economics Society put up a good ight, but a mix of team work and excellent batting helped lock in batting the win for PUGAD. And to prove that our irst victory wasn’t just a luke or something, the team won their next match— against the ma Men’s Football Team. That was probably the most unexpected turnout in the entire tournament. No one knew how we pulled it off, but we did!
Although the Pugad team did not come out as winners of the tournament, they still remained victorious as the league strengthened not only their physique and stamina, it also toughened out their spirits. As losing out can only be felt once they have stopped trying, yes, the team did not win -‐-‐ but they had de initely learned something. Putting oneself out there, with a team backing you up can be one backing hell of an experience and a ride.
Our inal match was against majors from the College of Human Kinetics. We had a great irst couple of innings, but towards the end, CHK bested our soft-‐ CHK ball team. We didn’t end up qualifying to become the cham-‐ pions of the tourna-‐ ment, but all the fun, exercise, and free food and booze during the cham-‐ pionship match made it all worth it. The Women’s Foot-‐ ball Team, our irst opponents, were crowned the cham-‐ pions of that tourna-‐ ment, but the whole experience made everyone who parti-‐ cipated feel like win-‐ ners.

And the season of giving has come upon us! Instead of just giving presents to the less fortunate, UP Pugad Sayk had their second visit to Payatas and spent the whole day with the kids. We were fortunate enough to visit the kids of Payatas Child Care Center before we head on to the new year and I must say, I loved every bit of it.
We We started with a Christmas story and headed on to snacking over cookies and juice. After that, some kids had their coloring books while others played games like patintero and Chinese garter and even had fliptop battles. And believe me; you would be surprised with the talent these kids have to offer. We also brought them lunch and gave them extra Christmas loot. The pugadeers' extra joyful disposition mas surely made the kids want them to never leave. I felt so happy to see that their smiles never left. From start to end, we felt nothing but love and hospitality from them. Even if it was a bit difficult to get their undivided attention at first, a whole day spent with them definitely was not enough. A little patience from everyone surely went a long way.

On January 27, 2014 UP PUGAD Sayk had an outreach program for children in the Payatas Child Care Center. It was expected that there would be a lot of children but it was a Monday morning. Some of them were in school so there were only a few kids who were actually able to come; so much for “the more, the able merrier.” Despite some minor setbacks, the kids and the Pugadeers who participated in the activities were still able to have a meaningful and fun experience.
Some of the Pugadeers let out the children and artists within and apart from painting the kids’ faces, they got paint all over themselves too. The kids, for the most part, had fun with the face paint, creating and becoming themselves works of art and masterpieces that could be born only from a child’s wild imagination. After much fooling around, talking with the kids, some artistry here and there, and a whole lot of picture-taking, it was time to eat. Since there were only a few kids, there was enough food for seconds and the. Pugadeers got to eat as well.

Last January 11, 2014, the Probies had their outreach at Riles ng Tren in Muntinlupa. Being really far away from UP, the journey was almost as big, if not just as big, of a deal as the outreach itself. Due to the difficulty of finding transportation for everyone to get there, the probies resorted to commuthere, ting to their destination taking almost every mode of public transportation that day. The probies gathered in UP at 9 am that day, took the jeep to the MRT station, the MRT to Ayala, a bus going to Alabang, and a tricyle going to the place of the outreach. When finally in the place of the outreach, the probies were greeted by 200 kids of Feed Metro Manila, a non-profit organization that helps to alleviate hunger issues through feeding programs. The outreach started off with warm up exercises, followed by a few dance numbers prepared by the kids.
The probies then distributed cooked meals to them. Finally, there was a live story telling of “Ang Alamat ng Pinya” by the probie programs committee. The children were all smiles as they The performed their dance numbers, received their meals, and got attention from the probies. One could most certainly feel all the happiness and gratitude coming from these children, children who are lucky to even have one decent meal within the day. The thank you’s did not end until day. every single probie had finally left the outreach. Heading back, some of the kids even ran ahead of a few probies, waited for them to get to where they were standing, and shouted “Thank you, mga ate at kuya!” with their high little voices in unison. It was most definitely a tiring trip, but bringing joy to those little faces made the little adventure from the North all the way to the South worthwhile.

2013 was a good year for Pugad’s resident choir, Tiririts. Their eyes were dead set on Karolfest and becoming this year’s champion. As per the rules of the contest, Tiririts had to perform a song of their choosing, as well as a song that was assigned to all competing choirs. Tiririts picked a rather somber song called “Paglamig ng Hangin," in line with the contest requirements of it being a Filipino Christmas song that encapsulated the theme Paskong Pinoy. The contest piece on the other hand was a hit song of the 1980s called “Do They Know It's Christmas?” The choir performed an arrangement of the song by Macky Bautista. The choir rehearsed almost every day. Practices were held from Monday to Saturday, and practices after classes would oftentimes extend up until around 9:30 in the evening. Besides the performance of the songs themselves, they also had to prepare choreography. After almost two months of hard work and dedication, they found themselves in the CSSP Karolfest, held on December 03, 2013. After performing in front of an electrifying crowd, Tiririts emerged champions over Buklod Isip’s Himig Buklod, PsychSoc’s POPStars, and PolSci’s Kratos. They went on to represent the college in the University Karolfest on the 13th but they only managed to land 4th place. Nevertheless, the choir performed beautifully. This year’s incarnation of Tiririts was comprised of Weggie Bermudez, Maika Manicad, Sunny Patron and Pam Torga as the sopranos; Sam Benavidez, Mel Exmundo, Bear Reyes and Bella Tan as the altos; Miko Abola, Kiko Aurellano and Simon Malmstrom as the tenors; and Kent Alonzo, Macky Bautista, Pico Garcia and Pao Rupisan as the basses. Pat Baes conducted for the choir in both the College Karolfest and University Karolfest. Kent, Maika, and Pam were also the soloists for “Paglamig ng Hangin." The choir was led by Macky.

Mems' Night served as a night to celebrate the relationships that we built with one another over the past year as well as those that we intended to cultivate in the coming years. This year's Mems' Night was titled Lumiere. The event was tagged as a semi-formal black and white party. That said, the members arrived at the Filinvest 1 clubhouse all dressed up and suited up in the classic color combination of black and white. The night started off with a delicious dinner coupled with musical performances by Rae and Ben as well as a few songs care of Miko. There were more performances after dinner featuring Kyle, Maika and the boys (Drei, Angelo, and Kent), and the UP PUGAD Sayk singing group Tiriritz. The program also had a few games to keep things interesting. One of the games was a question and answer game about the history about our young organization. This not only challenged the older members but also provided an opportunity for the newer members to learn about our history. The other game was a guessing game where the members were shown baby pictures of current members and were asked to guess who it was. After the successful program and with a happy tummy, the night moved on to one of music and dance. By the end of the night, everyone went home tired but happy with another org experience to remember.
