UP PUGAD SAYK: Seniors 2015

Page 1

INTRODUCTION On its 15th year, UP PUGAD Sayk looked to continue its tradition of personal growth and development. Academic year 2014-2015 was one studded with changes like the academic calendar shift or the controversy about banning freshies from joining organizations. The people and the culture inside the organization differ year in and year out, but this year has exposed us to the extent to which change and transformation is embedded in the identity of the org. The central theme to our projects and events this year was Anchored, the idea of staying rooted to what the organization really is about so that we stay true to PUGAD’s identity amidst all the inevitable transformations it will undergo. We amended the constitution to allow for flexibility during such a period of adjustment, placed emphasis personal growth, not just of the members but also of the org, and introduced new twists and takes on classic PUGAD projects, all while welcoming 47 promising new members to the family. It hasn’t been entirely smooth, but I would like to think we did the best we could with what we had. 15 years of PUGAD pride have certainly shown us the benefits of a positive and humanistic view of people. Hundreds of people have received the warmth and the light, with their lives having been changed for the better. Still, as PUGAD approaches two decades of emphasizing good relationships and pushing each other to grow in our own ways, there is much to be done. There still remains establishing a niche for the org in the community it finds itself in, as well as finding sustainability org operations in light of ever increasing numbers. Bittersweet as it may be to find my days as an active member of this organization in the past, I still thank everyone for four great years of personal growth and discovery, especially for the support and trust you have given the Execomm this past academic year. I’m excited to see this org reach its potential, just as it has seen me reach mine. Here’s to the past 15 years of this wonderful organization, and here’s to the rest of its wonderful existence! To the fire that we shall never let die! To Psychology and beyond! JANSSEN KOTAH President

FIRST SEMESTER ACLE:

Food

For

Thought

(Pam Torga). UP PUGAD Sayk held the ACLE last October 28, at the Palma Hall. The ACLE was entitled “Food for Thought” as it talked about the psychological aspect of food consumption. The event was graced by experts in the fields of food business and gastronomy. The first two guest speakers were Peter Tiope and his business development manager, Kathrina Crisostomo. Tiope presented an overview of the food industry and the fast-moving consumer goods distribution in the country. Crisostomo, on the other hand, provided a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting the choice of food we buy & eat, plus a brief discussion about food froregions. The third guest speaker of the event was Prof. Raymond Macapagal from the Center for International Studies. He talked about why we eat what we eat in certain amounts. He also revealed the cognitive processes that take place when we consume food and experience hunger.

ACQUAINTANCE PARTY (Simon Malmstrom). “Parental Guidance: PUGAD at 15” was the theme of this year’s Acquaintance Party. Chicklets and PUGADeers were invited to dress up as their blockbuster alter-egos and come get to know each other. The Akwe was held at Woodside Homes Clubhouse, Brgy. Kristong Hari, New Manila, Quezon City on the 12th of September, 2014 from 6:30 to 11:00 pm. People came in costumes and people won awards for their acknowledged efforts. Aside from coming in a wide variety of costumes, the chicklets did all kinds of things from singing, dancing, acting, rapping, and what-not. There was more than enough food and drink for everyone. A photo booth was set up and pictures were indeed taken, although not necessarily in the photo booth itself. Overall the akwe didn’t disappoint. Somehow, we always manage to a have a good time (‘cause we’re awesome).

APPS’ NIGHT (Georgia Kalaw).

In fulfillment of a requirement of PUGAD Sayk’s App Process, the Chicklets held their Applicants’ Night last November 21 at the Geli Residence, Capitol Homes. It was more than just a requirement — it was a night to bond, enjoy the company of each other and do what Chicklets do best which is to have fun! On the day itself, loud tunes played, strobe lights set a feel good mood and the chicklets partied the night away! Pizza, chips and booze were served for everyone’s satisfaction. The title of the event being Pau Hana which meant, “work finished,” definitely was the best way to cap off the semester long app process.

APPS’ ORIENTATION (Gil del Rosario). It was that time of the year again — the time to welcome the newest batch of Chicklets for School Year 2014-2015. Last September 1, the App’s Orientation was held at the infamous PHAn lobby. The morning started with the introduction to PUGAD. With this came every committee’s introduction from each committee head, along with a game. After all the fun and festivities, President Janssen Kotah sent the apps off with a few messages about the PUGAD experience. With that, the day ended with the new Chicklets being welcomed to the family, and to be welcomed to the fun-filled start of their application process— their journey with PUGAD. APPS’ PROJECT (Jezi Llamas). For a day, the embodiment of one of PUGAD’s values: “People First” was generously fulfilled by the UP PUGAD Sayk Chicklets, through an afternoon dedicated to the children of the Daan Tubo community. The small community of Daan Tubo is hidden away within the hustle and bustle of the ever-busy Katipunan Ave. With activities like origami making, storytelling, fun games, as well as dancing, the project was able to showcase the innate abilities of the children, which, more often than not, are overlooked. Although the project

1 0 | UP PUGA D SAY K 1 5T H Y E AR only lasted for a few hours, it was something that was able to give worth and importance to the children and surprisingly, to the Chicklets as well.

BAKE-OFF (Chris Deatras). From

November 11-14, it was committee against committee in a battle of flour, sugar, and ovens. Each of the five committees brought their best sugary concoctions to the tambayan each day of the week, selling them to the people in and around PUGAD. Apart from the profit, which consisted 70% of the criteria, there was also a taste contest a la Master Chef, which was the remaining 30% of the criteria. At the end of the week, after all the (sugar) dust settled and the ovens cooled down, it was the Internals committee that reigned supreme.

CHECKPOINT (Joe Giron). On September 17, the Chicklets have reached a “Checkpoint” in their PUGAD journey. Checkpoint was the event that had them experience their first reflection GA and revealed who their buddies will be. In the GA held in PH 207, the apps were given more information to deepen their appreciation about the org. On top of the reflection, two team building activities were held. The first activity illustrated that everyone has their own way of growing and developing; but what’s important to remember is to celebrate the differences and individuality. The second activity involved the apps and mems using each other as support as they sat on each other’s laps, forming a circle. The point of this activity was the importance of team effort and trust among the apps and the mems. Finally, it was time to find out the buddies. First, the apps tried to guess who their buddies were based on the clues they were given throughout the day. Eventually, apps were paired with their buddy. The checkpoint concluded with the apps meeting their buddies for the first time while sharing cupcakes, arranged in the PUGAD Logo.

FRIDAY NIGHT FEVER (Gil del Rosario). In celebration of the 15th year of PUGAD — Friday Night Fever was held on September 26, at the Filinvest I Clubhouse. Originally, FNF was to be the culminating event of PUGAD Week, but it was delayed after Typhoon Mario hit the country. The Externals Committee headed the event with the help of the Finance Committee. It was to be a more casual yet fulfilling experience for the Chicklets, Pugadeers, Alumni and outsiders. After warming up with games, karaoke and even a couple of rounds of Just Dance!, everyone danced to the tunes of the 70’s and the 80’s. It was a refreshing experience to see the PUGAD family relaxing and having fun. Friday Night Fever was truly an event that gathered apps, mems, and even some alumni, to come together and celebrate PUGAD’s 15th Birthday. FROST (Yssa Ong). PUGAD ended the semester with the annual Alumni Homecoming, which doubled as this year’s Christmas Party. It was held at the roof deck of the Platinum 2000 Condominium last December 19, 2014. The night was abuzz with eager chatter and joyful laughter, and everyone looked as good as they felt since they were all dolled up in their best semi-formal wear. Each committee (including Execomm!) prepared a performance that was judged by PUGAD alumnae Sam Benavidez and Pau Catanaoan, with Externals bagging best performance of the night. Although it was “Frost,” everyone left with a warm heart. KAROLFEST 2014 (Miko Abola). UP PUGAD Sayk Tiririts once again competed in the annual Karolfest competition held by the university. They performed a medley of Pasko na Naman and Ang Pasko ay Suampit as arranged by Joel Navarro and Eatnemen Vuelie, a combination of a South Sami folk song and a Danish Christmas carol. Despite coming up short at the university-wide competition last December 13, 2014, there was beautiful music to be heard, both through

1 2| UP PUG A D SAY K 1 5T H Y E AR our ears and in the hearts of each singer. This year, Tiririts consists of Mel Eco, Sunny Patron and Pam Torga as the sopranos; Mel Exmundo, Yssa Ong and Paula Tuaño, the altos; Kiko Aurellano, Simon Malmstrom, and Miko Abola, the tenors; Kent Alonzo, Ethan Maslog and Pao Rupisan, the basses; and Macky Bautista as our conductor.

MEMBERS’ NIGHT (Carlo Man-

uel). Mems’ Night — a night made for fostering friendships within the organization. The theme of the night itself was game night, which provided a chance for members to bond and build on their relationships with one another not through a formal event but through the chance to have simple, relaxed, and fun encounter with each other. The night gave everyone a chance to really spend time in each other’s company highlighting not the fun of guessing the culprit, acting out the card, or hitting that double word score but the members of PUGAD. In a way, Mems’ Night, by strengthening bonds within the organization, truly captured one of the org’s main beliefs – people first.

MINI-TBS (Karelle Bulan). Cre-

ative and matching combat uniforms, a 16ft by 16ft square battlefield, friendly yet fierce competition, exploding eggs, hanging hankies, raging men, and dripping wet PUGADeers and Chicklets, and a whole lot of team-building - a few things that comprised UP PUGAD Sayk’s Mini-TBS held in the University’s Sunken Garden on September 18. The mini-TBS, albeit only intended to be a small gathering for bonding and team building and as preparation for the bigger TBS, became an avenue for UP PUGAD Sayk to get to know each other better and show not only cooperation and teamwork but their competitive sides as well. Dozens of soaked PUGADeers and Chicklets with aching limbs and a few scratches here and there walked across the Sunken Garden field as the sun began to set that September afternoon, but everyone would agree that it was one heck of a

U P PUGAD SAYK 1 5TH YEAR |13 seminar that would be quite difficult to forget.

PSYCH 101 SEMINAR (Josh Santos & Pao Rupisan). PUGAD held its yearly Psych 101 Seminar on October 04 and October 13. It featured different speakers that talked about different topics in Psych. The first day featured talks from PUGAD alumni. Sam Benavidez talked about the psychology behind gossip; Cholo Luistro talked about attribution; and Sam Sanchez gave an introduction to Developmental Psychology. The second day featured talks from professors in the Psych department. These were Ma’am Div Salvador, who spoke about what being a psych major entailed, and Sir Jay Yacat who gave a talk about Sikolohiyang Pilipino. PUGAD WEEK OPENING & GRAND PAKAIN (Miko Abola).

Despite the incoming torrent of rains, PUGAD week was kicked off last September 16, 2014 at the AV Lagmay Hall lobby. The festivities commenced with the unveiling of 2 birthday cakes in commemoration of UP PUGAD Sayk’s 15th anniversary. After the blowing of the candles, PUGADeers and non-PUGADeers alike digged into the feast. It was an event enjoyed by all, and it promised a good and fruitful week for PUGAD.

RUMMAGE SALE (Kent Alonzo) This semester’s Rummage Sale was held last October 18 at the Dagohoy Covered Courts in Barangay UP Campus. The sale went on smoothly, with a very efficient system implemented, making the marketing and purchasing of the rummageables easier. Despite the work that had to be done, and the exhaustion felt afterwards, it was a memorable experience for everyone. Here, PUGAD shows the side where we must all work to actually get something done, while still keeping the smiles on our faces. TBS1 (Rory Nakpil). The semestral

PUGAD Team Building Seminar took place on a beautiful and sun-

1 4| UP PUG A D SAY K 1 5T H Y E AR ny Saturday morning. The festivities may not have begun on time, but they were definitely worth the wait. UP Diliman’s campus was transformed into a monopoly game board, each “property” either a photo-op or a fun dare to be executed by the teams. Dares included the classic “guess that alum!” performed by the apps, the mind game “psychologist”, matching mems to their body parts, creating an advertisement, etc. Other dares — e.g. having to tell a taxi driver to bring the team to Tagaytay — had to be performed when teams landed on the non-property cards of the game board. Some teams were given the opportunity to draw Chance or Community Chest cards that either made their journey smoother or rougher. The winning team was the Blue Team, composed of Danicca Pineda, Luigi Catolico, Ethan Maslog, Michelle Mariposa, Arby Lagamia, and Rory Nakpil. Though the TBS was plagued with mishaps and trip-ups, it was great exercise, even greater fun, and one of the greatest bonding experiences…EVER.

SECOND SEMESTER ACLE (Pao Rupisan). On the 26th

of March, PUGAD conducted its ACLE entitled Sinekolohiya: A film viewing alongside a talk regarding the reception of Filipino local films. The film presented was Dukit, a 2013 independently produced film by Armando “Bing” Lao. The film was centered on the life of a Kampampangan woodcarver, as the title literally means, “carved in wood”. Mr. Lao was invited to the event itself, and after the film viewing he talked about the “found story” format as a method for filmmaking. Asst. Professor Divine Love Salvador then talked about how films are received. All action and all happiness won’t necessarily make a movie memorable or have real impact. Sometimes it’s the movies that have a lot of drama or those which are dynamic that really make an impression on people.

BLOCK SCREENING (Kent Alonzo). On April 24, 2015, PUGAD once more had another film on the table for screening in Trinoma. This time it was Avengers: Age of Ultron. Under the leadership of Finance Committee head Maan Ordoña and Deputy Jio Capinpin, we were once more able to successfully manage and actualize our second consecutive block screening event. Willing PUGADeers contributed in the brainstorming of ideas which included marketing, sponsorships, logistics and so much more. They also were present, gleefully assisting in preparing all the freebies for the audience, and determinedly persevering in keeping the people orderly and taken care of as they stayed in line. Once everyone was settled in their seats, surrounded by their freebies and their friends, we were all gifted once more with another work of art on film. It may have been a challenging day for PUGAD, but as we always have done time and time again, we left with smiles on our faces, and new memories in our hearts. CHILL MOVIE NIGHT (Miko

Abola). One word to describe the event? Chill. PUGADeers kicked back and relaxed at the Mendoza residence last March 27, for the PUGAD Indie Movie Night. The night featured movies that were filled with feels and frights, both foreign and local. In particular, the Taiwanese film You Are the Apple of My Eye left the PUGADeers in attendance in a mess of feels. There were even some homegrown productions shown that night. It was a night that ended the stressful midterm season and kicked off the week-long break we were all craving.

CRUISIN’ @ 15 (Miko Abola).

Capping off PUGAD’s 15th year, PUGADeers and alumni gathered to the Filinvest I pool on June 05, for the culminight. Dressed in their best summer outfits, people ended the year with a fun night of swimming with friends. The main event of the evening was the

1 6 | UP PUG A D SAY K 1 5T H Y E AR much-awaited Mr. & Ms. PUGAD Sayk pageant, which showcased the talents, wit, and good looks of the PUGADeers chosen to represent their committees. There were also musical performances in between segments of the pageant, and even a couple of audio-visual presentations that chronicled this past schoolyear. Before the end of the night, the title of Mr. & Ms. PUGAD Sayk were awarded to Luigi Catolico and Macky Camagay of the Externals Committee. It was a night that celebrated the year in the company of good friends.

PROBIE PROJECT (Pao Rupisan). This year’s batch of Probies decided to hold an outreach with the kids from Sulyap ng PagAsa, a housing compound in Brgy Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, catering to less fortunate communities in the area through its monthly feeding program for underweight children. Funds for the outreach were raised through the selling of specially designed notebooks/ journals, as well as ice candy in AS. On the day of the outreach, the probies were divided into several teams with the children and played a variety of games such as Maria Went To Town, Calamansi Relay, Three-legged Race, etc. After the games, the kids were served lunch as PUGADeers performed a few songs for them. To end the outreach, the Probies gave out story books to each of the children. SPORTSFEST (Chris Deatras). On March 14 and 16, PUGAD held a sports fest for the members. On the first day, members gathered at the sunken garden to play field games such as ultimate, kick ball, and dodge ball. After lunch, some people even went to the UP Gym for some basketball and soccer. On the second day, the players gathered at Capitol Homes Court for some legit basketball and volleyball action. It was essentially Externals versus Acads-Fin-InternalsSec (a.k.a. THE WORLD), but in the good spirit of competition and fun the teams were separated into fair teams. At the end of the day, the

U P PUGAD SAYK 1 5TH YEAR |17 winner was… EVERYONE. Because everyone wins when everyone is having fun.

TBS2 (Ethan Maslog). In this sem’s

PUGAD Team Building Seminar, members banded together as pirates, but not just any kind of pirates—competitive pirates. Teams even had their own wireless speakers to play the theme song to Pirates of the Carribean to announce their fierce presence on campus. Calamansis were treated like game currency and the goal was clear: get as many of them as possible to win. Teams had three ways to win: one was to solve witty SMS clues to find caches of calamansis hidden all throughout UP Diliman’s campus; another was to earn them as prizes for winning in short notice mini-events at random places every hour. Green Team may have had the most number of calamansi, but in the end the Yellow Team prevailed as the most resourceful juicers. Yellow Team was composed of team leader Lanz Blas and members Yssa Ong, Sary Valenzuela, Kim Cano, Ranjo Mondragon, Rei Geli, Arby Lagamia, Ben Pabiona, Diero Apacible, Carlo Torres, and Pao Rupisan.

What is your favorite/craziest/ “pinaka malala na” PUGAD memory? I guess it’d have to be when Clarrie and I joined the first Mr. and Ms. PUGAD contest. It was the first time I’ve really done anything spontaneous like that in front of people. I guess it’s an indication of how much more comfortable and confident I’ve become in myself. Or I’ve just become more uninhibited, haha. Either way, it was a fun experience! What legacy will you leave behind? There are two important things I’ve learned in PUGAD. One is to always realize that there is room for growth, which I learned from when I got accepted as probie to the many times I’ve gotten disgruntled with the org. It’s important to realize that there’s always room for growth, especially with yourself, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Second is the importance of making time and effort for people. Some of my favorite memories are simply sitting outside the tambayan and listening to people open up. It matters to slow down and listen without judgment to people open up and share with you. What brought you to PUGAD? Compared to other courses the blocks in psych didn’t get to see each other much in the first sem. Well at least that was during my time. That is actually the main reason I wanted to join a psych org in the past so I had 4 psych orgs to choose from but then I needed a home or a safe place to go back to whenever I need a place to get away from my other home. Something like what we had in our high school or grade school years. Then there was only one choice, PUGAD. I wanted to be part of the PUGAD family. Who was your first/ most memorable mem crush? Nicco Layawen? EVERYONE KNEW THIS I mean how could they not have, I would hyperventilate around him. Some people called it the NIcco effect. I got all flushed and out of breathe from just seeing him. It was only after he graduated when I actually learned how to be around him. OH OH AND ALEX CASTRO I don’t need to explain that What is your favorite/craziest/ “pinaka malala na” PUGAD memory? Oh god there are just too many. Seriously, it’s always a blast being around pugad people Probably Adhoc? So a bunch of us decided to try attending an adhoc, I mean we were already in our third year and a bunch of us haven’t experienced it yet. And at first it was just me and weggie, but then it became a big group of just random people! Like even people we weren’t close to. I mean apparently we attended the worst adhoc, with the stampede and all, but I had so much fun because of the people I was with. At around 3am we ended up trying to find taxis for 10-11 people while it was pouring out and we only had three umbrellas. Yes we brought umbrellas to adhoc. “ What legacy will you leave behind? In PUGAD? I am not exactly sure. I do hope people will still continue Euphoria. I was actually one of the people who took care of the first ever Euphoria. That was my freshman year and for some reason, I wanted to help out with it and I raised funds for it. It was exciting because we were starting from scratch and we really did want to leave some sort of legacy. I think that was the most successful one yet. What brought you to PUGAD? Actually nahila lang ako ng beki friend ko na magsign up sa booth ng PUGAD nung org fair kasi nagbabantay daw yung crush nya, si Ian. I even attended the Apps Orye pero yung beki friend ko iniwan ako at nag app sa PsychSoc. Medyo gago di ba haha pero nagustuhan ko kasi yung orye (si Jolo naghohost nung time na yun pano ka nga naman di matutuwa di ba haha) so I decided to push through. Pogi naman kasi talaga di ba. Pero I didn’t expect na sem after that, I won’t only get a crush towards a mem but actually fall for a Pugadeer. Lol pero syempre let this remain a blind item hahaha! #LongGoneAndMovedOn ang peg. What is your favorite/craziest/ “pinaka malala na” PUGAD memory? Pinakamalala? I can’t remember any. So siguro yung favorite na lang. Gustung-gusto ko every time manunuod ako ng Karolfest to support PUGAD’s Tiriritz. Sobrang wow. Iba yung feeling. Nakakaoverwhelm maging part ng PUGAD. Lalo pag inannounce na nanalo ang PUGAD (as usual charot). What legacy will you leave behind? Hmm legacy? Siguro yung mark na not all members who started as probies end up being a disappointment? I got accepted as a probationary member and I had to appeal for my membership. During the appeal I found out their main concern was all the orgs I had to juggle. They fear PUGAD will be just one of my orgs. In the end, when I grew sick and tired of everything, PUGAD was one of the two orgs I kept. Give 3 words that describe your experience of PUGAD. Also yung mem’s night this year lol ANLALA kbye What legacy will you leave behind? I’m the only (ever?) Linguistics major to be in PUGAD, I think. So I guess in my own way I represented my field to the org. Ngayon mas alam na ng mas wide variety of people ang Lingg, ang ginagawa ng Lingg, and I get to clear issues and other shenanigans regarding language and its technicalities. It’s nice also to share and exchange knowledge with people with broader perspectives; to not just get contained within the field that you’re in. Since PUGAD has members from different courses, it’s so interesting to know about what they’re learning. Whatever I’m learning from them, I always relate to what I’m learning in Lingg, and it makes the experience of learning concepts of my own field more exciting as I see it from different angles. This whole learning experience just makes my stay in PUGAD a lot more meaningful. I hope the people in PUGAD also feel the same way hehe. Sabi nga sa consti diba, isa sa values ng PUGAD ay unity through diversity. So I guess embodying that value is the legacy that I will leave behind.
