We have had some serious fun this month playing with the likes of the Boscombe Bike Club, where we fooled around setting stuff on fire and dining with a few of our UPRAW favourites thanks to Oli and Tom from boxedvegtv.com (ending in a night of strait arming and Agwa shots in Smokin Aces). As usual, this issue gives you an insight into some of Bournemouth’s best hidden gems and the people behind them. We bring you the creators behind the Bar Tenders League and the best mixologists that Bournemouth has to offer, bespoke jewellery craftsmanship, at Aris Jewellers, where we watched the progression, from melted gold to the final glittering piece. We are looking for interns! If you fancy yourself as a whizz at illustration, photography, journalism or just want to be part of what we do, then send some info to sacha@platinummediapublishing.co.uk – get the chance to meet some of the great people, incredible talent and some cool new artists that are part of the furniture here at UPRAW HQ. An opportunity that’s definitely not to be missed!

We opened our shop Kaotichandbag- Geek Boutique in Pokesdown in November 2011 with the help of the Boscombe Area Regeneration Group ‘Talent’ scheme, which was set up to help creative businesses in the area, and have since developed our range by introducing hand made one-off comic book dresses, custom jackets featuring the likes of She-ra, Dr Who and Care Bears, skirts, custom rock jackets, babies’ bibs, and a huge range of geeky jewellery which we sell all over the world.

GEEKS ARE THE NEW COOL! Our shop is part toy shop part boutique, we wanted to offer something different to the Bournemouth area. We bring the aspects of ‘Geekdom’ all under one roof from toys & collecting to fiction & fashion. We buy and sell collectable vintage & current toys so kids can afford to buy their favourite superhero character with their own pocket money or people can trade the stuff they don’t want for something new. We also have a great range of products with a geeky or quirky edge made by other small label designers too, some local, some from further afield. We like to encourage and support other creative types and it’s the best way to get something really unique! Our shop is just a crazy Aladdin’s bat cave of geek chic!

Who wears your stuff? Quirky fun loving people of all ages and sizes who are not afraid to embrace the inner geek! People who like to be original - to wear something no one else has! We’ve sold our dresses to Teens, Tweens and Mums, jewellery from tots to pensioners, it’s the attitude that’s important not the age or shape! We like to think we’ve got something for everyone whatever their ‘geek-trest’, My Little Pony or Motorhead, Rockabilly or Star Wars or whatever floats their boat! Recently we sold a jacket made by one of our other designers to Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour apparently he wore it on stage saying it was his Dr Who look! Oh yeah did I mention we do blokes stuff too?

Comic Book appeal? Well they’ve always been popular but graphic novels and comics were seen as more of the domain of kids or nerdy boys until more recently, I guess in the last 10 years or so when the huge resurgence of superhero films such as X-Men, Batman, The Avengers, Spiderman etc not seen much since the 1970s /80s have put them back in the spotlight. Those in the know always knew how cool graphic novels and superheroes were but programmes such as The Big Bang Theory and the revival of Dr Who have brought it all into the mainstream with celebrities even sporting Batman prints on the red carpet!

If you wanted to get all deep about it you could say fantasy is a great form of escapism and in times of recession, it’s easy to see the appeal. But really it’s quite simple, they’re great stories, the costumes are awesome and it’s FUN! // TWINKS BURNETT

LONDON FASHION WEEK BACKSTAGE

With spring barely on our doorstep, our thoughts were turned to AW13/14 and the frenzy that is London Fashion Week. It’s hard to believe that in 5 days we had the low down on all the style trends that we will ALL be dying to wear come winter. After months of planning, pinning and preparation, Somerset House played host yet again to a wealth of designers, fashionistas, bloggers and the army that are models, hair artists, make-up teams and dressers to make the magic that seems effortless happen out their centre stage on the the runway. I was right there in the thick of it as a member of that army assisting Anthony Turner as part of the backstage hair team both on Preen and Marios Schwarb for L’Oreal Professionel.

Preen couldn’t have said it any clearer in their mantra for their models “You are the new Model Army! You have anarchy in your soul and love in your heart! Walk with a purpose and strength!” So that’s exactly what they did. The hair look was natural and effortless with an off centre part, the feel of the hair was to create a light and airy texture so as they walked down the runway the hair just flowed, this was achieved by spraying L’Oreal Fresh Dust into the hair. The make-up by Val Garland was clean and fresh with a strategically placed stroke of fine liner drawn either below or above the upper eye lid. These simple, clean, slightly punk looks perfectly suited Preen’s monochrome colour palette with injections of red and blue.

18 | upraw

The collection ranged from printed pixilated leopard and tartan to heavy embellishment with detailing on the collars, cuffs and edges. Lots of silver zipper work and pockets on the outside of pants and sheer tops gave the clothes a sensuality. These classic looks make a bold and daring statement. In contrast, Marios Schwab’s gothic - like beauty graced the catwalk with swathes of transparent, silver, burgundy and the palest pink dresses floating like medieval elegant ghosts. The fabrics where in rich velvets and satins with sheer panels and where either micro short or skimming the floor.

Schwab’s usual statement Swarovski crystals adorned sheer panels that were revealed with thigh high splits. The dresses where combined with gladiator sandals, simple contoured make up and Pre-Raphaelite hair that was crimped with a centre part and scooped over the ears and taken into a low ponytail with wisps of hair being allowed to flow free around the face as she moved. The look empowered a warrior Schwab woman. This is always my favourite show so beautiful, always powerful, refined and elegant. // ANGELA LOWERY, Hair Aritist, Y salon

Eden Hair & Beauty is a new signature hair & beauty salon based in Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth. Kelly Williams is the owner and has 19 years experience in Hairdressing. Starting her Hairdressing career at Marc Youngs and training there for 4 years in all aspects of hair.

Within that time Kelly trained to become a technical advisor travelling to salons educating others at the tender age of just 20. From there she went on to joining the market leaders Toni & Guy for 8 years and trained to be a technician moving from Bournemouth to various salons within the company.

She trained in London for international and national trainees. Also within this time Kelly carried out the task of completing the Wella masters colour award, then swiftly followed by the L’Oreal colour specialist degree. Meaning there isn’t much she doesn’t know about hair colour!

Because of her experience she gained the position of right hand woman to the several times nominated hairdresser of the year Phil Smith in which Kelly had the opportunity to work on many photo shoots & also appeared on GMTV alongside him and has worked on many celebrity heads the most famous being Robert Plant of Led Zepplin. After a stint in Puerto Banus still within Toni & Guy Kelly returned home to her Bournemouth roots to set up Eden Hair & Beauty.

SHE APPEARED ON GMTV AND HAS WORKED ON MANY CELEBRITY HEADS THE MOST FAMOUS BEING ROBERT PLANT OF LED ZEPPLIN.

Top tip: When shampooing hair you should generally shampoo twice. The first shampoo will cleanse the surface of the hair and the second will penetrate into the core. Leaving your hair ultimately fresh. A very important part of your shampooing routine is that you must towel dry before you condition. Otherwise this will be like putting moisturizer on a wet face. It will just slide off. Also you only need to use a small amount of conditioner, no bigger than the size of a fifty pence piece. Your hair can only absorb so much.

UPRAW CHECKS OUT

I WANT TO RIDE MY BIKE “The Boscombe Bike Club started in our Boscombe kitchen in the early hours, using any vintage bike we could get our hands on.

We spent hours hunting for well-made bikes at the end of their lives, and turning them into something new and exciting.”

32 | upraw

We are all students at the Arts University Bournemouth, so being creative is at the heart of what we do. We’re constantly collaborating on new ideas, and we love that the B.B.C has become such a tight knit team. We are currently building a one off, custom bike for AUB, based on a vintage beach cruiser and we are working closely with them to create a bike like no other. We work closely with the lovely people at the Wheelie Great Bike Store in Lansdowne, Bournemouth, who not only stock our bikes, but donate a percentage of every sale to the Bournemouth Church Housing Association, who provide accommodation, education and support for those facing homelessness.

We strive to create one off custom bikes tailored to the owner’s personality, and try to create different, fun and exciting elements to each bike. This is where our passion lies and why we continue to put so much of our work and time into the Boscombe Bike Club. The Boscombe Bike Club consists of Josh, Jamie, Nicky the Italian and Holly. We all have individual skills and contribute different ideas to every bike we create. Holly’s knitted saddle covers have become a must-have for our bikes and are a new and original way to regenerate an old or ugly saddle. We’re so excited to see where the Boscombe Bike Club takes us and we want as many people as possible to get involved, as the B.B.C grows. We are planning an exciting summer with Boscombe Bike cruises and lots more.

WE STRIVE TO CREATE ONE OFF CUSTOM BIKES TAILORED TO THE OWNER’S PERSONALITY, AND TRY TO CREATE DIFFERENT, FUN AND EXCITING ELEMENTS TO EACH BIKE.

DRINKING WITH THE

BOURNEMOUTH

BAR League

TENDERS

mmmmmm COCKTAILS The League is a series of 13 competitions spread over the year. Any bartender can enter from the BH postcode. It’s a community event that aims to bring together the bartenders

of Bournemouth with the intention of encouraging higher standards so Bournemouth can increase its standing amongst UK drinking cities / towns.

38 | upraw

JAMES fowler from the larder house explains... Where did the idea come from? I hear a lot about the cocktail & bar culture of other cities. Bristol for example has recently become one of the best places to visit for quality bars served by quality bartenders. Various bartender events & regular competitions have really brought the bartenders of Bristol together creating a hub of talent. I want Bournemouth to host its own competitions for its bartenders so we as a town can be recognised for serving great quality drinks. What is the main aim of the league? To unify the local bartending community. To encourage new bartenders. To increase standards so we can move upwards to compete better in National competitions. Who can enter? Essentially anyone from the BH postcode. You can be in or out of work, or perhaps not even a bartender - most will be though! I have made it as accessible as possible, with many competitions, held in different venues around the BH area. The winners of competitions 1, 3 & 6 also get to choose the theme for further competitions. Who will be judging the competitions? Well there are two judging groups. The competing bartenders themselves will judge each other. Competitors once registered will judge fellow bartenders and by the end of the competition choose their top 3 bartenders. The bartender with the most points wins the top points to go on the league table. The other judge is a brand / sponsor judge who is there to give actual feedback in terms of what the

brand looks for & to help the bartenders develop themselves for national competitions. The brand judge won’t influence league placings. Are non-bartenders allowed to spectate? Yes the more the merrier. There’s going to be brand training 2 hours before each competition to add an educational opportunity to the events. A few of the venues will be holding industry nights afterwards. Do points mean prizes? Each competition will be sponsored by a drink brand. The brand / sponsor judge will present a prize for his or her favourite - this may not be the league winner on the day! The bartender that comes first on the day will win a bottle of spirit & their points will be added to the league. The person that wins the whole league (announced early Dec 2013) will also win a bounty of stock that has been collected from all the competitions over the year - that’s a minimum of 13 bottles of spirits! How do you plan to expand/develop the league in the future? More competitions, more brand support & hopefully bigger prizes! Where will the February/March comps take place? 12th February - Competition 2. Mai Tai (Ashley Cross) Theme - Tequila Aphrodisiac drinks March - TBC This competition will be decided by the winner of competition 1 Will you be doing other events alongside the league to encourage community spirit etc? We will be doing a pub quiz as a more social event - all questions will be bar, cocktail & spirit related - again with points to credit the league.

39 | upraw

THE IDEA IS TO UNIFY THE LOCAL BARTENDING COMMUNITY. TO ENCOURAGE NEW BARTENDERS.

NICK SCOTT FROM POST LIVING

H e r e a r e a f e w p i e c e ’s f r o m Nicks current collection.

I have been involved in interior design and styling for over 20 years in several different roles. I was lucky enough to start styling for TV with a very successful art department so my first job was standing by on a TV set at Pinewood Studios starring Bob Hoskins and this totally gave me the buzz I wanted from work. I worked on shoots for TV, film and magazines producing all sorts work mainly based in London. I worked for 3 years on the Jamie Oliver campaign for Sainsbury’s when he first signed his contract and this was great. We travelled to amazing locations and built big sets in some on the best studios in London. I started Post Living with my Brother-in-law after a weekend break in Brighton. I had this idea to make tables and my Brother, Stew, has a love of graffiti and together we started to put this idea together of ‘urban home wares’. It was simple really, I love furniture and home wares and he has a love for urban art. We couldn’t really see where you go to buy this kind of stuff so decided to give it a go. We wanted something simple, bold, accessible and affordable we launched Post Living selling limited addition table packs from great illustrators like Pete Fowler, Jared Nickerson, Mr. Flurry and Big Nige via our on-line shop. The next step for us is to find local retail spaces that share our passion for this kind of art in the local area in Bournemouth. We really want to work with local artists, make the product locally and sell it locally... that’s the plan! There seems to be huge interest in urban art within the local area. We have several very

special collab’s coming up with amazing artists and this time the table packs will be very limited edition, maybe 2 or 3 all signed by the artists. We have been amazed about how generous the artists have been with their time and work... they love the idea like we do and just want to have some fun with it. These packs will not be sold on-line but will be sold via retail and gallery spaces locally. New this year is the idea of Post Living coasters. They can easily be mailed out and provide an affordable piece of art for the home. We are about to release a series of 5 different coasters from 5 artists and they look fantastic. We have collaborated with Pete Fowler again, Si Mitchell, Kris Douglas, Shrunken Heads and Tom Joyce. this will drop in march and will be sold on-line but again we want to find local outlets to stock these. If they fly, then there is a second wave of artists

47 | upraw

ready to go. Watch out for our 2013 coaster look book out soon!

That’s a lucky position to be in.

It has been a steep learning curve but the most satisfying project work wise that I have done. We have received great feedback and got PR from ‘Living etc’ amongst others which was one of our main aims when we sat down and chatted in Brighton. The next step is to find places to stock and sell our products locally and build up on-line sales. So if you like what we do and feel you want to be involved then hit us up! we could always do with help finding retail outlets or building the online profile. This is a project done outside my main work and time is limited, but it’s something that is a passion and a release. We work with who we want and produce what we want.

I LOVE FURNITURE AND HOME WARES AND STEW HAS A LOVE FOR URBAN ART.

NOT KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT, CLOUDS OF BURNT ORANGE SMOKE ERUPTED FROM HIS MOUTH, AND POSSIBLY HIS NOSTRILS.

BOSCOMBE BIKE CLUB / CAMDEN & UPRAW NOOBIE Forget “planking” ... people of all ages are taking the “cinnamon challenge,” a dare to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without water. A search for the phrase “cinnamon challenge” pulls up about 31,900 results on YouTube - and the most popular has almost 10 million views. Every month we love to make fools out of our friends, so here we are. Firstly Jamie from Boscombe Bike Club stepped up to the challenge. Not knowing what to expect, clouds of burnt orange smoke erupted from his mouth, and possibly his nostrils. Then Will Butler, one of the Camden chefs took the toll. To start, the guy looked promising, but Will’s

BOXED VEG

As we roll into 2013, new trends in food are already beginning to take shape. Across the pond in the US, the pig, whose body parts have long enjoyed high praise, consistently at the forefront of food fetishes across the globe, may be soon be succeeded by an unlikely food group; the vegetable.

54 | upraw

It appears that, increasingly, the most sought after reservations, are for restaurants that have turned their attention to extracting as much flavour as possible from carrots, kale, heirloom beetroots and various other vegetables that get cooked, often in unusual ways and served to you on a plate, devoid of protein; I don’t know whether to blame vegetarians, or hipsters. So whilst that intro may not entirely paint the picture of where a recent night in Bournemouth was headed, it does explain that you can expect to see a lot more talk of vegetables this year in the mainstream food media. So when the hot new food trend is a food truck on London’s Southbank, a highly lauded Bagna Cauda and recipe for their trademark dish of gratinated cauliflower plasters the pages of The Guardian’s food supplements – other publications are available – you’re going to want a decent veg man. Enter boxedvegtv.com, a local veg box scheme that sources local produce and has three collection points in Ashley Cross, Westbourne and Southbourne. boxedvegtv.com is also, now supplying restaurants and hotels in Dorset, with a background of selling fresh produce in the city before moving to Dorset, only two years ago. Oli Perron, the brain child behind the business, also has an accompanying web TV series that he produces. Fresh for 2013, Oli Perron and friend, Tom Wittlin have just launched Frank & Beans, another series of videos documenting the duos escapades eating and drinking around Dorset. “I don’t want to create just another boring, cliché cooking show,” says Oli. “I wanted to use real people with real local Dorset food, as well as some of our nights out, the realistic edits can be much funnier than any scripted show.” The videos currently receive around 2,000 hits each and are continuing to grow. For their second online episode of Frank & Beans, boxedvegtv.com put on a supperclub night in collaboration with Upraw and The Living Room under the name Boxed-UP. For those of you unaware, The Living Room is in Westbourne, owned by the awesome

Fashion Editor Twinks

Andy and Anna and culinary home to their chef, Tansy. I make no secret that Tansy is one of my favourite cooks. Her food is honest and playful and free of the pretensions that so often surround food these days. To say I was excited that Tansy was preparing the food for Boxed-UP is an understatement. Oli and Tom, I’m not sure which one is the frank and which one is the beans, had been out with a foraging expert earlier in the morning and along with the produce from boxedvegtv.com, delivered a table heaving with food. The guests included Jim from Jimmy’s iced coffee, Upraw’s editor Sacha and fashion editor Twinks, Andy and Tansy from the Living Room, and friends of boxedvegtv.com Jon and Tasha. We attacked the food heavily, the starter of sea kale pesto with crusty bread had been foraged at Hengistbury Head and was followed up with a cavalo nero and parmesan breadcrumb salad. The table also saw a baked golden beetroot, watercress and blood orange salad bolstered up by a beef shin and sweet potato lasagne.

55 | upraw

I MAKE NO SECRET THAT TANSY IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE COOKS. HER FOOD IS HONEST AND PLAYFUL The whole table couldn’t stop talking about the cavalo nero breadcrumb salad. The evening was lubricated by Naked Wines, a mail order wine company that not only have some really great wines, but also support and work with wine producers to help them grow. Naked Wines sponsored the evening with a mixed case that included Sacchetto Prosecco that we were greeted with on arrival and a fruity Rioja Crianza from Carlos Rodriguez. Desserts had kindly been supplied by Avon Beach in the form of frangipane apple tart, chocolate brownies and a ridiculous Bailey’s bread and butter pudding with raspberry compote, which was every bit as good as it sounds. We continued drinking long after the last forkfuls of food had been stuffed into out mouths and the banter continued to flow. conversations ranged from how amazing ottolenghi is, a chef we can all get behind, and burlesque dancing, though I must point out that the two subjects were completely separate. drunken debauchery continued into the night at Smoking Aces in Bournemouth where the alcohol began to take its toll on some more than others. namely me. You can watch the second episode of Frank & Beans and subscribe at boxedvegtv.com to see what went down. So when those vegetable-heavy recipes start to roll in the mainstream media, you know where to get your produce from! If you’re a restaurant or hotel after great seasonal produce just get in touch on twitter @boxedvegtv //NICK BAINES

UPRAW FOOD REVIEW

WEST

BEACH

WB

A FISHERMAN’S CHOICE Most mornings, somewhere around 7am, you’ll find a lone fisherman in his rowing boat somewhere just off Durley Chine. Often, you’ll see him bobbing

around out near the horizon, other times you might catch him hauling his wooden boat back up the beach, rolling it across rubber buoys. >>>>>>>>>

Dave is pretty much the only person fishing the waters within half a mile of the beach. For several years I have stopped down in the mornings to purchase fish from Dave at his small plastic table pitched up on the promenade. The fish could not be any fresher, nor any more local than his days catch. Flat fish are usually still alive up until you have chosen which one you want to buy, upon which Dave dispatches the fish, guts it and hands it over in a recycled supermarket carrier bag. Now at this point, the responsibility rests on your shoulders. If you overcook it, or things go wrong when taking the skin off that beautiful lemon sole you just had killed, the results aren’t going to be anything to write home about. I’ve often chatted with Dave down on the sand about the virtues of seafood. He eats fish every day, he tells me, and never eats meat. Along with rowing out into the bay for over forty years, Dave looks incredible for his age. I knew he supplied fish to Westbeach, just a short cycle up the beach by Bournemouth pier, but had never eaten there. They know how to treat the fish properly up there, he’d told me, on more than one occasion. I remember one time when he had three boxes of sea bass in the back of his boat. All of it caught to order for the restaurant. A couple of years since meeting Dave, I finally got to eat at Westbeach whilst on assignment for Upraw. There’s a calmness to the room, a peace that’s accentuated by the stern wind blowing across the sand outside the expansive glass windows that line the front of the restaurant. There was a bowl of plump mussels cooked with chorizo and tomato, the partnership of spiced pork products and shellfish being one that should never be ignored. Our table also shared a beef carpaccio and a mackerel and beetroot salad, which had a honey mustard dressing. Westbeach has been written about by Observer food critic Jay Rayner, who writes, “the sort of fish-heavy brasserie that every self respecting seaside town should have.” I completely agree with those words, but the sad fact of the matter is, fish restaurants of this calibre are relatively scarce. Embracing the rarity of Westbeach, we shared our mains. Pan-fried John

So if you ever look out early one morning from Durley Chine to see Dave pulling in his nets onto his small rowing boat, remember that when you want to know where to eat great seafood, always listen to the fisherman. // NICK BAINES

Dory with minestrone had a satisfyingly crisp skin and a firm, meaty texture, whilst a whole lemon sole was not only huge, but held a rippled, burnished pattern on its exterior and withheld a juicy, delicate tasting flesh. Meanwhile, Upraw’s photographer devoured a lobster thermidor shortly before we had to stop him from eating the hand towels; which look like chunky mints until they have been soaked with warm water table side. The kitchen, overseen by Head Chef Nick Hewitt, formerly of Chewton Glen, certainly knows how to work with what the local waters bring them. After the time and hard work put into catching fish, it’s heartening to see a respect given to the fish from fisherman, chef and finally a table full of diners.

STOOKI As flag-bearers of the UK trap wave that’s currently meandering its way through people’s eardrums, Stööki Sound saddled the weight of the whole movement as they ripped WAYF last month. The designers of sparse, 808-heaviness never shy away from a party and despite the impending hangover, caught up with UPRAW after the show to introduce their project that has seen plays on BBC 1Xtra and dance floors nationwide. So Stööki, how did you two meet up in the first place? Jelacee: “We met up through my cousin’s birthday meal and we got to talking about music but we then didn’t see each other for a good while. Then I remember heading out somewhere and we were in the same place; he DJs, I made music and then we just decided to make some tunes and it eventually became a production duo.”

67 | upraw

68 | upraw

TO HAVE PEOPLE THAT DON’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC GOING CRAZY WAS MAD

When it comes to making tunes how do you divide production responsibilities? Jelacee: It depends. Sometimes we make tunes separately, so I’ll just send over the stems for the tunes and other times we’re together. And Lukey, as a member of the original Stööki brand what does the whole movement entail? Lukey: Stööki is a lifestyle brand so there’s an art collective side where we make jewellery and apparel. We’ve just finished our new collection called ‘Obscura’ and our store will hopefully be online by the end of the month. We’re also going to be doing some art workshop events throughout the year.

And in terms of the UK representatives, who deserves a mention? Hucci, Muramasa, Dolce, The Ninetys; it’s still very, very young so there’s not too many people in the scene. Everyone in the scene knows each other and now you’re getting people that are coming up and interest is growing.

Bench held a competition called ‘Self Made’ which was about young creatives that have set up something independently. I remember that we entered on the last day and we didn’t think we’d even entered on time. Two weeks later we found out that we’d won and we were stoked because we’ve put so much of our time and effort into it. It was the perfect competition to win.

So you’ve mentioned Hucci and it was with him that your biggest track to date, ‘Ball So Hard’ emerged. What happened there? Jelacee: I heard his tune ‘Swerve ‘ and I emailed him because that tune was sick and the download limit had been reached on Soundcloud. He sent it over to me and introduced the idea of working together. We initially sent him over a track called ‘Millionaire’ and he liked that before sending him ‘Ball So Hard’, which sounded nothing like it sounds now. It had the main melody and a couple of other bits but it was basic. About a week went by and when he sent it over we were just blown away. Lukey: I remember hearing it for the first time and we thought that we needed to put it out straight away.

As trap continues its infestation of the UK electronic music scene, how did you guys initially get into it? Jelacee: It was probably ‘Bugg’n’ by TNGHT… Lukey: …that was probably the first wave of trap, as it’s called now. Jelacee: Trap isn’t necessarily new, but that was big. There’s obviously the likes of Chief Keef and even going back to Three 6 Mafia, but the new wave of electronic trap has now come over to the UK and it was that track that got me into it.

How have Trap Door Records assisted with getting you down to Bournemouth and other things? Jelacee: Trap Door have been very, very good to us from the start. They jumped on our music from before the hype and they’ve been posting our tunes around to get us more known. That’s the reason why we decided to release the EP through them because we’re both entities on the rise and we work well together. We never thought we’d be headlining but they do well to push artists like ourselves without

69 | upraw

being too picky about names that aren’t yet known. Trap Door is more about who you should listen to, regardless of their size. So we saw how much Stööki loves to party, but what do you love most about playing out? Jelacee: Yeah, definitely! I came off the decks and started a mosh pit when we played. It’s got to be done. Lukey: I think the crazy people at the front of the booth when they’re going nuts for your music. When we played we couldn’t see that far beyond them but the two rows of people at the front make things a lot more energetic. So how has Bournemouth dealt with its trap baptism of fire? Jelacee: Not even joking, but Bournemouth has

probably been the best night thus far. We did Bussey Building in London and that was a hype, but to have people that don’t even now about the music going crazy was mad. I think the biggest thing though was the amount of people coming up to us after the show wanting to find out more about the trap movement. And finally, what have people got to look forward to? Jelacee: We’ve got a few more remixes and we’re considering a collaboration album because we have so many in line. I’ve got a solo free EP, which is probably going to come out on Creed Collective as well as some mixes to keep things ticking over. // ERROL ANDERSON

I think it’s the whole combination of great music and a great venue with friendly staff that encourages people to return every week Bar So. What was it that brought you to become a resident at Bar So? I’m just starting my third year at Bar So after they approached me to run and DJ on their Saturday nights, it’s now turned into a full time job creating events and promoting the venue and also having a input into the future of Bar So. It’s great working for a team that allows you to come up with some crazy ideas and sets to build for our special events. DJing can come with its perks, what has been the highlight of your DJing career? There has been many moments that stand out especially whilst running Bedbug, we had all the top DJ’s you can mention every Friday and I was lucky enough to have dinner with most of them and then play the warm up set. Partying with Steve Angello in 176 after Bedbug has to be one of the stand out moments, how he made his flight the next day I’ll never know. When you actually get a chance to have a weekend to go out partying, what is the music genre you want to hear? I only really have one weekend off a year and my ticket for Bestival is all already booked. I love the festival vibe and it gives you good chance to listen to all different genres of music but you can’t beat a good classics set to lift you up.

Danny, you’ve been headlining Bar So Saturdays for as long as we can remember - where did the love for DJing begin and what is it your doing that keeps bringing everyone back for more every weekend? I’ve been DJ-ing now for eleven years and still enjoy it as much if not more than when I first started. I’m still learning new skills and tricks everyday which keeps my enthusiasm and appetite to DJ high and I look forward to playing out every week.

WE HAD ALL THE TOP DJ’S YOU CAN MENTION EVERY FRIDAY AND I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE DINNER WITH MOST OF THEM AND THEN PLAY THE WARM UP SET.

What is it about Bournemouth that keeps you playing to the masses of these sunny shores? I couldn’t imagine not living next to the sea and during the summer months its almost the same as being abroad it’s just a shame we don’t always have the sunshine but hopefully we will this year. So what does 2013 have in store for you and Bar So? We are busy planning for the year ahead at Bar So and looking forward to bringing some new nights as well as the favourites. So Saturdays the giant screen comes into play with a full VJ set which is proving to be very popular already. Hed Kandi starts again on the 26th April bringing the glitz and glamour only a world famous brand can and not forgetting our Bank Holiday Events. I’m looking forward to our Xbox Tuesdays starting soon where you can play all the top games and kinect, you really have to see it to believe it . Already the year is filling up.

SOUNDING LIKE THEY FELL INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY AFTER BEING DRAGGED THROUGH A 1980S TIME WARP, THE HISTORY OF APPLE PIE AMPLIFY FUZZED-OUT GUITARS WITH A HANDFUL OF SHOEGAZE. I CAUGHT UP WITH LEAD SINGER, STEPHANIE MIN, AND BASSIST, KELLY OWENS, TO CHAT ABOUT THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, TRAVELLING THROUGH TIME AND DRIVING MUSIC BEFORE THEIR SHOW AT 60 MILLION POSTCARDS. Hey guys, how has the tour been going so far? Stephanie: Really good, I don’t want to go home. We go home after tomorrow and I am really sad about it. Kelly: It has been the first time we have properly done a headline tour and we have realised there are ups and downs but we are getting on really well and having fun. No arguments then? Stephanie: Well, we have had a few fistfights! Kelly: Yeah, just to get out that aggression. Stephanie: No genuinely, what happens is we have a massive argument then make up and hit the dance floor very aggressively. For instance, the other night I was picked up by James and thrown onto this couch and my whole back landed on this radiator behind it. Kelly: I am literally covered in bruises. We get a bit raucous. When did you decide to put your debut album, Out Of View, together? Stephanie: Beginning of last year, our managers told us to go and record the album, just go do it. That didn’t go to plan, we did it but we weren’t happy because we were just doing it by ourselves, literally in the bedroom and using the studio to mix it. We didn’t like that, then we departed from our managers and got a massive, what’s the word… Kelly: Second wind? There is less pressure the second time round, we knew what we didn’t want to do and then got Josh to help out with a few bits when he came back from tour. That’s Josh Hayward from The Horrors, right? How was it working with him? Stephanie: Yeah, it’s weird because he did coengineer it but he was very much sitting in the corner doing something else. Like working on his pedals or whatever. Kelly: It was just good to have someone there for input and support.

Cool, so who would you tour with? Kelly: Sonic Youth. Stephanie: Yeah! I would really want to tour with blur as well; I would love to do that! What is the scene like when you get home? Kelly: It is good; there is always something to do, always people putting on gigs, really DIY stuff as well. Stephanie: But there is not so much a sense of community as there was. NME used to be really good at coining the next scene. Kelly: I’m f*cking sick of that though. Stephanie: Actually, they just did one this week that was ‘Acid is back’. Kelly: But that’s really lame, make your own scene that’s what it’s about. Do it your f*ckng self! Sorry, I didn’t mean to swear. So what are you listening to at the moment? You must get through a lot of albums when you are driving between gigs. Kelly: We do but it’s normally songs that have been out for a bit. Jerome (Guitarist): We just listen to that My Bloody Valentine record. Kelly: YEAH! I love it Jerome: I think it is the best thing I have heard in a long time. I’m going to go it’s better than Loveless. I think ‘Wonder 2’ at the end is the best thing I have ever heard. Stephanie: We listened to it solidly for the first week. Do you have a go-to jam on the tour bus? Jerome: ‘Its A Fast Driving Rave-up With The Dandy Warhols Sixteen-minutes’. Kelly: That song is so good, we just make up our own lyrics to it. Stephanie: We always listen to it on the last night of the tour when we are driving home. Awesome, nice chatting to you guys! // JAMES EMBIRICOS

RITA ORA

Rita Ora came from nowhere to release three no1 singles and a chart topping debut album. On the eve of her first UK tour, she talks to Andy Welch about her stunning rise to fame.

rita

At the tail end of 2011, Rita Ora appeared in the video for Hot Right Now with DJ Fresh. Before that, she’d only really been seen in a handful of online videos, but by the time of the song’s official release in February last year – it went straight to no1 and ended up selling more than 480,000 copies – she was one of the most talked-about singers in the country.

“It was a real pinch-yourself moment, and the meeting we had with Jay-Z was just unbelievable. It was so nerve-wracking, interesting, exciting and weird all at the same time.

As an introduction, it clearly worked, and Ora’s subsequent two singles, RIP with Tinie Tempah and How We Do followed Hot Right Now to no1.

Immediately after her UK tour, which Ora’s currently rehearsing for, she has dates in Australia, and then mainland Europe. Between now and the summer she’ll record her second album, and hopes to have it released by the end of the year.

“That’s definitely the most surreal thing that’s happened to me,” says the 22-year-old Londoner, on the morning of the Brit nominations. “The success of the singles, and the tour selling out within minutes of the tickets going on sale as well- all of last year was crazy.” Ora is getting used to “surreal”. She was signed by Jay-Z’s management company and record label Roc Nation in New York after Mr Beyonce himself called to request a meeting. “I’d play anywhere – bars and clubs, in my dad’s pub, just to be out singing,” she says. “I guess Roc Nation heard about me just through people they know in the industry, called me up and asked for a meeting.

You know when you can feel someone’s power? It was like that, you could just tell when you walked in the room that he was powerful and successful.”

“My first album was finished when I was 19, and I’m 22 now, so I have a lot more I want to talk about and say” she adds. Ora’s self-titled debut featured production from the likes of Major Lazer, will.i.am, The Dream, Stargate and Diplo, but she promises the second album will see fewer writers contributing more. “I’m very excited about some of the people lined up, I can’t wait to work with them. But obviously I can’t say who they are yet. Pop music’s very secretive.”

recruitment

How to be successful in an interview As we explained in the last issue, you never get a second chance to make the right first impression. However what happens after you submit your CV? A good recruitment agency will keep you posted on the status of it at all times. Therefore working with a great recruitment agency is crucial to your career steps. Mastering a few simple techniques could secure you that all-important, sought-after job so it’s essential you take this advice on board. Put simply, competition is higher than ever in the current economic climate so make sure you do everything you can to stand out. Research The permanent consultants at SOS recruitment recommend researching the employer details as much as possible. This might seem obvious but they don’t just mean history, background or general information as you will be doing nothing different than regurgitating the website. Remember, the people interviewing you know all this already so stand out and quote other news such as charities they support, affiliates they are involved with and recent events and provide your opinion on each if plausible. If you can link research to posts you’ve seen on Twitter or show that you’ve read their blog the company will be more than impressed to say the least. Handshake There’s a real truth about a good handshake combined with effective eye contact. A handshake to remember is firm and equal to the other person; placing your hand on top or below is a sign of dominance or subservience. Extend your arm and go in for the handshake-welcome, whilst looking up, making eye contact and engaging with your audience. Stating your name and the all-important ‘Nice to meet you’ at the same time will work wonders. The interviewer will like and respect your confidence and take these as positive traits that you are friendly, open, welcoming and approachable.

Body language & dress code How you express yourself goes far beyond the words you use. Research shows that 55% of a first impression is based on visual impact. Consequently it is key that your dress code is spot on; scruffy dress creates a bad impression and poor body language can hint at traits such as deceitfulness, nervousness, boredom or aggression. If you are being interviewed by more than one person, maintain eye contact with the full interview panel. As your interviewer explains the opportunity to you, show a positive reaction by nodding and smiling. Regarding dress code this is a business opportunity so dress to impress – it’s as simple as that. You need to dress in business wear; men should wear ties and be cleanly shaven. You’d be surprised how many people forget about their shoes so ensure you have clean, shiny or even new shoes if possible. Don’t cave under the pressure Now that you’re in the interview room this is your time to shine so don’t ruin it by panicking or caving under the pressure. Our tips are to take deep breaths whilst

you are waiting, talk slowly and communicate clearly. Under interview pressure it’s easy to get carried away by talking too fast or too much; slow down and keep it relevant. Keep your answers concise but be ready to expand on information and don’t just give yes or no answers. This could be your one and only chance to impress the interviewer so show them you are rational, composed and think your answers through. This is your opportunity to highlight the best examples of yourself so don’t rush through these positive points – use your time wisely and get the employer to concentrate on your every word. Know your strengths and weaknesses This point is very important and shows the potential employer that you know yourself and can be confident on both strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. Some people think you shouldn’t reveal weaknesses but in fact the opposite is true. The trick lies in recognising something that could be a strength but in disguise. For example, that you work too much or you’re a perfectionist. Therefore practice beforehand and know exactly what you are going to say. The potential employer does not want to hear weaknesses such as you have a low attention span, that you’re late to work or have trouble accepting authority! These are big no-no’s. Take this as the time to position a weakness positively and go one step further to outline how being employed by the company that is seeing you would help you develop as a person, gain extra qualifications, extra training and support, learn a new language or allow you to build on a skill you need. Positioning yourself at the company in question and what you think you can learn from them will go down very nicely. It also shows you are willing to learn and advance with the company, which they will respect. Assuming you are an intelligent person you should be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, and by stating them will highlight to the employer what you are really made of. Give specific examples You’d be shocked by how many candidates, when asked, can’t relay one specific example about something they have done. Immediately, this will place you a few steps back. Interviewers want to hear how you dealt with a tricky situation, met sales targets, or dealt with tight deadlines. So many candidates state there are too many examples to give one, or that they can’t think of one; this is not beneficial as employers want to see you give exact, live examples on how you made the difference in the workplace. SOS recommends working examples such as times you’ve been a team leader and what you did when there was a problem, an example of how you took

your initiative, managed to prioritise your workload or met stringent targets. If you work in sales how to close a deal is imperative along with live examples of figures and timeframes. If you’re a Manager specific examples of disciplining, leading by example, reporting to Directors or handling difficult situations will make you shine. See this as the opportunity to give evidence to the things you’ve stated on your CV. Examples of your performance really will make you a cut above the rest as you are demonstrating to the employer how you can make a difference to them. Last but by no means least… Thank the interviewer for their time and for seeing you. This is of the utmost importance. You’d do very well to back this up with outlining your ambitions to join the company so remind them why you’re interested in the role and what makes you a suitable candidate; even ask a couple of questions to demonstrate your level of interest and how keen you are. Employers appreciate you being keen so don’t be afraid to ask how long it might take to hear any news. The final factor is to leave on a high note saying that you would really like the position if you were offered it. This will reinforce your ambitions and desire to the employer and make that all-important lasting impression! If you’re looking to talk to somebody or to develop your career talk to SOS today. Plus…. We are also launching our very own educational program in the spring, which includes three seminars. We will be covering a variety of topics so to find out more and secure a space email events@sosrecruitment.co.uk

I enquired about jobs on the Wednesday, discussed possibilities on the Thursday, went for interview on the Friday and got the job! They were the only agency to respond personally by phone and email so as to personalise their service to me and I was offered advice and really helpful guidance throughout by Kate and all the staff I dealt with. SOS will always be my first point of call.’ J Wickham - SOS Candidate
