WELCOME A
WO RD
FROM
T H E
E D ITOR
It’s finally the Christmas season, and now we can justify being ‘merry’ for a whole month, especially with the German market here at last - mulled wine in Christmas boots all round! It has been a chilly winter, so there is no time like the present to get the Christmas jumpers and wooly bobble hats out and celebrate by getting some serious Christmas spirit on. We have been to some super cool places this month, the Sknddy Clothing Co. guys were wicked and put on a super rad pop up event which kept us up all night (lucky we can handle a party on a school night) with Simon Hulton and Polar Bear throwing some seriously grimey beats around the place whilst showing off the newest R.O. range. We’re also super stoked that Prevail Skate House is being built right opposite the Upraw HQ – the best part of this month by far, getting updates on how the skate houses progress is going, which means we can pop in and try it out. I spent an hour alone just running and jumping in and out of the foam pit. This place is going to be ridic when it opens. And lastly we can’t go without mentioning the Annie Mac Presents gig at the O2. Was probably the best night of the year we reckon. Super sick gig, great venue, and I won’t forget trying to interview Skream and Benga with loafs of bread attached to their hands in a short while – yeah it is a long story but you’ll find out the whole story in our next issue.

The store at 8 Albert Road trades across two floors and carries sneaker & streetwear brands including Adidas Originals, aNYthing, Benny Gold, Brixton, Carhartt, Converse, Diamond Supply Co., Dickies, Durkl, Herschel Supply Co., Huf, Nike NSW, Obey,

We caught up with Harry Swinhoe, the creator of the Sknddy brand, along with his collegues Abi and Chloe to check this rad new clothing line that we found that is right here in Bournemouth. Also hosting cool pop up events to show case their line, this isn’t just a brand, it’s a lifestyle.

Sknddy Clothing Co, originally from street art and a DIY culture, has developed into an independent lifestyle company. On Tuesday 27th November, Sknddy launched ‘Collection R.O’, the abbreviations stand for Remain Original which the Sknddy team bases their ethos on. Sknddy Highjacked was held at The Anvil, Lansdowne, and was a night of celebration for Sknddy’s latest range - inspired by Mayan designs, Greek Mythology and Egyptian Artwork. The creator of Sknddy Clothing Co, Harry Swinhoe, was inspired by the 2012 and Mayan calendar conspiracies, wanting to create something completely different and moving away from the mainstream Aztec patterns. Sknddy Clothing was born in the small town
of Alton in 2009, and Sknddy Highjacked was created as a way for Harry to show his love and appreciation to his supporters and team. “Back when I was 14 I never thought I’d be running a clothing line, it was just a signature I had become accustom to drawing, we tagged the ‘threepeak’ logo all over our hometown and fell into a hobby we knew nothing about but loved! The idea picked up pace & I began to make canvas’s and posters incorporating the design & eventually printed 50 tees back in 2009, which I managed to sell to my family and friends.” The event, stimulated by Sknddy’s independence and originality, consisted of a collection of House, Dubstep,

Trap and Hip Hop music and of course, a pop-up Sknddy stall. The night was hosted by Bournemouth’s biggest up and coming DJ’s, headlined by Mr. Hulton who has taken the Bournemouth student scene by storm this year. Other DJ’s included Polar Bear, who brought a mixture of jumpy beats and experimental rhythms. Followed by Pystal & Crills, who delivered excitingly dark trap with quick drops. The pop-up stall was a near sell out with smiles all round, a few trips and tumbles and a lot of tidying up to do! Sknddy Highjacked delivered yet another successful evening, with hopes and plans for Sknddy to go bigger and better next time!

WORK HARD SKATE HARD WE CAUGHT UP WITH TONY HILL, THE GUY BEHIND WHAT IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BEST INDOOR SKATE PARKS TO HIT THE UK. A DREAM THAT HE HAS WANTED TO PERSUE FOR OVER 30 YEARS, WE INTRODUCE THE BEGINNING TO ‘PREVAIL SKATE HOUSE’...

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, since I was 13 and I am now 48. It’s been my mission in my life to build Dorset a good indoor park, not some pile of junk, a really good park that flows and people are gonna love it.” And that’s been proved already by a few pro bikers that have come down here who love it and have rated it as one of the best parks in England! I’ve had Anthony Ramsey on board, who really knows what he is talking about. Ian Jennings from Maverick whos a skater and skate park architect who is shit hot - he can put anything together, you don’t think it’s gonna work but he comes up with these ideas and they are wicked. We’ve got a great team working on this, and were gonna open up a shop and cafe area soon too around the side of the skate park. We’ll be selling BMX’s and anything skate really. We’ve been really busy, we started this in September, was all going good until Poole Council came along. They have given us some
setbacks, but were still going! This park is a passion of mine, I’m getting on but I still skate and I love bombing around this park. I don’t like Cricket and I don’t like football, this is just what really hits the spot for me. A lot of people are getting ready for this, doors open on 23rd of December for a massive gig for MAD Gear. They came down about a month ago to see what’s going on and loved it so much they wanted to host their Christmas party here. They usually hold it in top parks in the country, but they rated us strait away and said that its going to be one of the top three apparently which is a real honour. Its all down the skate architects though, you know. But until we open, were gonna.. “Work hard. Skate Hard.”

Sitting in the same old office chair day after day can be so dull. Why not kit it out with crazy addons and race it down the road? WHERE ARE THE BEST ACOUSTIC SESSIONS IN BOURNEMOUTH? RIGHT HERE IN CAMDEN BAR AND KITCHEN BASED IN ASHLEY CROSS. Tim Wilson is the hero that hosts Camden open mic night every Monday. With help from local talent he has made it one of the most popular nights to see live music in Bournemouth. Tim explained to us how his open mic night started with an amp and PA, but the format changed after a power cut on the third week. While most of Ashley Cross closed, the Camden team pushed ahead with their night using candles stuck in old whisky, wine and rum bottles. The music was stripped down to the raw talent and it has stayed like that ever since. Every Monday you can expect an intimate gig, set to candle light, from great local talent. Alongside great music this place offers the finest in home cooked food (which is sourced as locally as possible). Add that to their awesome coffee art skills, their ever changing cocktail menu, and you will without a doubt have an amazing experience. This lot are a creative bunch - so always expect the quirkiest of nights. Their events are like no other; you may find yourself feeding your mate a banana whilst blindfolded on the Sunday night quiz (this will be Sean Beamount’s doing!). After popping down to Open Mic Night (as usual), we had a little chat with the chief Lauren Curley to get an insight into what Camden is all about. “We thought about opening a bar the same way most people do - in the pub. Two local families talking about making something independent. It was just an idea then, but we had some clear thoughts about the sort of place we would like to create. For starters, we are all passionate about music. We play an eclectic mix of indie, rock, electro...maybe even a little old school hip hop. Strictly no commercial r’n’b, strictly no Steps. We love people. The staff are a merry bunch and
the regular crowd are pretty awesome too. We like to get to know people and we look after our flock. (Is flock the right word? Probably not, we aren’t a church. Although we do have wine). Good, home-made food and decent coffee were a priority from day one. It’s been a work in progress but the menu is always changing, with daily specials, and people seem to like it. We certainly do, and we are pretty proud of the local produce we use and our breakfasts (pancakes, anyone?) We do a few cocktails because they’re pretty damn tasty (our espresso martini is a bit of a winner) but we aren’t too crazy with it. Sometimes you just want a pint, and that’s cool too. We do some crazy events sometimes, we get ideas and run with them. Like Halloween speed dating (speed dating from hell!) or ‘May the fourth’ star wars night. The bonus rounds at our Sunday quiz are pretty mad, and the Monday Open Mic is really fun. We have had some awesome times following through on crazy ideas, and will continue to dream up random events and games. Ultimately, we couldn’t have made our pub dream into a reality without a lot of help from friends, support from regulars, and a great team of staff behind us. At the risk of sounding like a cheesy corporate douche; that’s what Camden is really about. The people... and beer.”

You said that other offerings have lots of unnecessary ingredients, what goes in Jimmy’s Iced Coffee? “We only have 5 ingredients. We have; milk, sugar, water, coffee (obviously, this has to be the main ingredient!) and then there is a red seaweed called carrageenan which is found in heaps of products. This is a white powder that almost turns to gum if you put it in your mouth. I have tried it raw and it tastes really weird haha but this basically stabilises the product! So yeah, only those things – you don’t need all the silly things that most of these iced coffees have inside them!”

This is pretty big, how long has Jimmy’s been around for? “We launched Jimmy’s in November 2010 so only two years ago and we have been selling since last April 7th in Waitrose and Selfridges. We had four months of, ‘okay let’s do this full time’ and my sister who is part of Jimmy’s still had a cafe at the time and working on selling that, getting the recipes organised, designing the product, and then five months later we got into Selfridges which was really cool!”
And lastly... what is next for Jimmy’s Iced Coffee? Jimmy elaborates a lot of exciting things going on, but we can’t tell you them just yet, but let’s just say we are very excited for him! But here is what he can reveal) “We need to get into Sainsbury’s for the major next step, which will lead us onto working with MTV which is really exciting for us. There is also a potential new carton on the cards, which will allow for ease of distribution to new countries and things like that. Me and Suze (Jimmy’s sister) grew up in Dubai so we have great connections over there, so that will be the one we hit first even though it’s a lot further than other potential sites. Exciting times ahead!“ Jimmy also tells us of a very special somebody that

These are a true team of craftspeople and you can see this lot have worked together for years. Their product knowledge is second to none, with each individual being constantly involved with the stock to keep it current and in keeping with industry trends. Customers have access of direct contact with the staff, James Edis, the Managing Director (aka the captain) introduces us to the team: “We have; Head Bar Tender Niall Percival aka the Whirl Wind, General Manager Gemma Terry aka The General, Head Chef Joshua Manning aka Pork Chop, Assistant Head Chef Andrew shell drake, who is currently launching his own chutneys called Dorset Goodness, and Trainee Chef Anthony Stratton aka Ant the Rant and the other Director Darren Clarkson aka Maintenance Dept.” You can see this lot are all great friends and this projects in their excellent service. With their menu’s, as well as their bar keep specials changing daily/weekly, you know these guys are serving the best that is available to their expert knowledge, sourcing all food as locally as possible. The lunch menu changes every day according to what is best in season. We ate the 10oz Market Lamb Burger, gently spiced with cumin, served with a fried shallot and mint yogurt with their big golden crispy chips. All food here is freshly prepared and you can see the effort that goes into every last bit of your meal, from the preparation, to how the food is served and displayed. This is one of the biggest burgers I have seen for a long while, cut in half you could see the meat, pink in the middle,
keeping the consistency of each mouthful tender and juicy even considering its size. Being winter and nearly Christmas, we had to try the Eau De Vie blazing mulled cider. To make this, Niall creates a house made spice of rum with spiced caramel and angustorus bitters, then heats the cider and does a blazer (type of cocktail) by setting alight the spiced rum - reducing the flavours into the cider so it is a mulled cider blazer. Niall makes his own range of boutique cocktails made on the spot, customised to every different pallet. “All I need is someone to say two things to me that they want in the cocktail and I can generally make something they like. You can choose from short strong and potent, or long - juiced up and refreshing. I always talk to my customer as I go so I can keep tabs on what they want in the cocktail, so ultimately I can make them the exact drink they are looking for” Make sure you check out Eau De Vie Fest - Their first birthday where they will be hosting 3 live bands, setting up a mobile bar and serving the same great quality food from card board boxes just like you would get at a real festival.

That was a wicked gig guys - how did you enjoy playing in Bournemouth!? I loved it, we’ve been stuck in our houses the past few months so these few shows we’ve done have been a release of steam of sorts. The crowd were amazing.
So who’s idea was it to shoot your new wild, party video for “Start the Party” in Ibiza? We love it - the videos pretty apt, any excuse for a wicked party! We’ve been lucky enough to shoot a few videos but in doing so you realise that they’re not particularly fun or
You worked with Jason Perry on the new album who has previously worked with Mc Fly (so quite a contrast to you guys). What was it like working with him? This is our 3rd record with Jason Perry, our first being The Best in Town. When he got suggested to us we knew him better as the frontman of A than a producer. During the last 3 records we’ve become great friends and he gets the best out of us during every point of writing and recording. He’s a very talented individual.
Toy Story is 10 times the film STARWARS Episode I is and looks less CGI’d. glamorous to do. We’ve shot one in a field at 1am, got soaked by freezing water and been stuck in a boiling van. With the song being about starting a party we thought that we could do the old house party video but thought it’s already been done so much. Then we thought fuck it, let’s go on holidays and shoot the video out there.
What was the best part of making the video? The banana boat looks pretty fun! The cliff jumping was my favourite thing to do. I used to spend most of my summers swimming in rivers and it reminded me of it, well almost, the water in the Mediterranean was a lot warmer and had fewer rats than the Taff.
Your new album “Start the Party” is released 21st January. What can we expect from the new album? It’s a very positive upbeat record. Full of riffs, shouting and big choruses. We decided to write a record that you can put on at a party and just enjoy it.
How does it feel being asked to perform with Yellowcard on their European tour in February? We can’t wait to get back out to mainland Europe and feel very honoured to be asked by Yellowcard, it’s gonna be a great tour.
And lastly, Gavin, are you still watching star wars - if yes then how do you feel about the whole Disney takeover - do you care? A lot of people are whining but after the pointless, selfish changes Lucas did to the originals and the over cgi’d prequels I honestly feel hope for new Star Wars films under Disney. When people hear Disney they think Mickey Mouse when they should be thinking The Avengers, Pirates of the Carribbean and any Pixar film. Toy Story is 10 times the film Episode I is and looks less CGI’d. As long as they stay true to the all ready established Star Wars timelines I’d like to think they’d do a great job.

IN B OURNEMOUTH DJ’S WE TRUST
GARETH SUTCLIFFE Gareth has been playing host to DJ sets all over Bournemouth for over 4 years now and we thought it was about time we got to know a little bit more about him. Founder of Bournemouth’s most premium house night ‘Get Satisfied’ along with Lloyd Miles - these guys have single handedly changed the music scene in Bournemouth as we know it.
71 | upraw
72 | upraw
You have recently got into producing as well as Djing, how’s that going? Very very early stages to say the least. Producing and making records is a very hard skill and it will take several months or even years to perfect to a standard where I can make a living out of it. It’s not something you can rush and you really need to find your own sound before you can start putting stuff out. I’d love, one day, to be able to put music out on my own record label, something myself and Lloyd Miles have had a brief conversation about already.
How did you get into DJing? I can’t really put an age on it, I think it was around 15-16 years old when I persuaded my mum to get me some DJ software for our home desktop computer because I couldn’t afford CDJ’s! After teaching myself the basics and after getting a few gigs at my local TigerTiger, I moved down to Bournemouth and things eventually took off from there.
When you and Lloyd created the night Get Satisfied, in our eyes this was the best house night to hit Bournemouth, what can people expect when they come along to this event at The Old Fire Station? Thanks for the compliment! We’ve worked very hard from day one to make this the best event it can be. We’ve spent days upon weeks promoting and organising everything. We both have a very good attention to detail and don’t mind spending that little bit extra to make the event extra special and unique. Everyone can expect a no holds bar pumping underground House night with music from some of the world’s best underground House DJ’s.
When playing a set, what is your music genre of choice? I’ve progressed from various sounds and I can say I’m a very versatile DJ. I regularly play commercial mash up sets at Lola Lo every Monday and Bar So every Thursday but my passion is with Underground House music. I fell in love with it after doing my first season in Ibiza in 2011 and haven’t looked back since. This passion eventually led myself and Lloyd Miles to start Get Satisfied.
I bet Ibiza was crazy.? So crazy that I went back for 3 months in 2012! There is no other place like it in the world. I’m very lucky to say that I was a resident for Pukka Up Boat Parties and I also made the odd appearance at Space which is probably the highlight of my career so far.

What’s the whole ethos behind Get Satisfied? The town and the South Coast was lacking a House event on the scale which we’ve made it. We also wanted to create it so it was an non-exclusive event - none of this pretentiousness you can find at other clubs around town - so that everyone can come and enjoy the music and the event together.
What have you guys got in store for the next upcoming event? 2013 will bring another huge year for us at Get Satisfied. We’ve got another 2 events before Easter, including our huge first birthday in March (but we can’t tell you the line ups just yet). Myself and Lloyd will be making a few Festival appearances over the summer under “Get Satisfied” as well as more appearances in Ibiza. Although Autumn 2013 is a while away, we will be upping our game and line ups to make sure Get Satisfied is a household name across the UK not just on the South Coast!
“The town and the South Coast was lacking a House event on the scale which we’ve made it. We also wanted to create it so it was an nonexclusive event - none of this pretentiousness you can find at other clubs around town”
What are your top ten tunes at the moment? 1. Flashmob - Hot 2. Tensnake - Mainline 3. Darius Syrossian, Hector Couto - Metal 4. Eats Everything - Trubble 5. Zee&Eli - A Rub Dub 6. Maxxi Soundsystem - Stella’s Way 7. Sub Focus - Tidal Wave (Shadow Child Remix) 8. Disclosure - Lividup (Waze & Odyssey Street Tracks Remix) 9. Jay Lumen - Get Ready 10. Miguel Campbell - Not That Kind Of Girl

BEN HOWARD Willy Mason was an amazing supporting act, and created an incredible atmosphere, a great act to get the crowd warmed up. ‘Save yourself’ went down well, with the crowd singing along. His years of experience show when pleasing the audience. Ben Howard was pitch perfect and the audience stood in awe.
The lights put on a great display and the venue was intimate enough, even though Ben commented on how much bigger it was than what he remembered. Seeing Howard live exceeded his album, his proficient guitar playing, was effortless and it left the audience to appreciate his voice, he performed beautifully and was a joy to watch. Ben Howard was endearing and an undeniable talent
Keep your head up, one if Howards most popular songs created energetic swells from the audience.
Overall a great chilled night to relax and enjoy the music. Made for an unforgettable evening.
