UPS REPERTORY DANCE GROUP PRESENTS

THE SPRING 2020 DIGITAL PROGRAM Shining a spotlight on all our dancers, choreographers, and fans!!

WELCOME TO RDG'S SPRING 2020 DIGITAL PROGRAM! Thank you to all of our choreographers, dancers, supporters, and fans! We are so sad we cannot share the stage with you all this semester, but we hope you enjoy this program and video to celebrate and recognize all the hard work and passion put into these dances! ~~~ We want to give an extra special shout out and thank you to our seniors. You have all given so much to this club and left a lasting impact on our greater campus community. Thank you for your support, we hope to see you all soon! Enjoy!

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT KARA ASHPOLE When joining a dance club freshman year, I expected a competitive group focused on putting on high quality performances. And while we all know RDG puts on stellar shows, what makes RDG special is the remarkable community of students that comes together to dance, regardless of their experience. Not having a show this semester has been hard for everyone in RDG, especially the choreographers and officers, but the community we have formed as dancers is so much more than two nights at the end of the semester. It's in the confused look you give someone when you have no idea what your choreographer is doing, the friend checking in with you at rehearsal when something seems off and the pure joy of dancing together each week that keeps people coming back each semester. To the officer team: thank you for putting up with me this semester! Your hard work and drive to make RDG an even better community is inspiring. You are incredible leaders of this club and I miss seeing you all in person! To the choreographers: I’m so sorry your semester got cut short and your dances couldn’t come to life the way you hoped. You are the backbone of this club and I’m so grateful for the passion and dedication you bring to the table every week. To our advisors, Marta Cady and Kelli Delany: thank you for always showing up and cheering us on. I appreciate your constant support and love for RDG and couldn’t do this without you! We hope you enjoy our online “show” and are able to see a glimpse of our spring show and how much RDG means to us. Thank you for supporting RDG!

A NOTE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT ELIA GARCIA Welcome to the RDG Spring 2020 virtual show!!! Thank you so much for still showing your support from afar. COVID-19 has affected everyone in different ways and it has affected our club by needing to cancel our show, but that didn't stop us from trying to figure out a different way! All of our dancers, choreographers, rehearsal advisors and officers have worked so hard to bring this virtual show together and push through these new obstacles. I wanted to say that all of the things you all do for the club does not go unnoticed and we are truly grateful for everyone a part of RDG! Our wonderful choreographers have recorded a 1-2 minute(s) of their choreography to show you guys! Our choreographers are leaders of this club and they are what keep RDG alive! We know that every one of you had an ideal vision in mind and due to the circumstances we were not able to fully bring that vision to life but you have all been so flexible and understanding and that is just another reason (of many) why you guys are so amazing. I also wanted to thank our lovely rehearsal advisors for supporting choreographers and dancers! We are so lucky to have a fantastic officer team that has helped RDG navigate through this uncertain time. Thank you so much for not losing hope and making this virtual show happen. I also want to thank our beautiful RDG dancers. Nothing would be possible without you guys. The hard work and dedication you have for this club is something so special and something I will always cherish. Dance is so special to every one of us and I am so happy you are all able to express yourselves and have fun at RDG. I really wish you all could have shown the dance(s) you've been working so hard on! Finally, I would like to thank our RDG seniors. My heart reaches out to every single one of you. You are all leaders in this club and school and we are so sad you can't give a proper goodbye and dance one last time on the stage. We love you all and we wanted to dedicate this virtual show to you guys and your love for RDG and dance. With that being said, we hope you enjoy the show and feel free to share the show with friends and family. All my best, Elia

This is my fifth and final time choreographing for RDG. I went back to my roots and had a blast with choreographing a beginning-intermediate hip hop. I wanted my dancers and I to just have fun and party like it was the summer of 2010. Although we didn’t get to perform the entire piece I had planned, what we did get to dance was upbeat and energetic. I have had a blast growing as a dancer and as a choreographer. Yet this dance wouldn’t have been pulled off if it weren’t for how amazing my dancers are. This is our dance, and I’m so thankful for them coming along with me on this wild adventure. This is my final chance to be remembered as a past officer, a choreographer, and a dancer in RDG. I want to give some advice to anyone thinking about joining RDG; do it! I always said that anyone and everyone should dance in RDG at least once. Even if you don't think you can dance, you’ll never know if you don’t try. Good luck, and I will miss you all dearly!

This piece was a bit of a tribute to my favorite artist Bishop Briggs, I heard her sing this song in concert and based on the tears in my eyes felt this dance was meant to be. This piece is about coming to grips about your insecurities in relationships and embracing them. I really loved working with my dancers who brought a bit of themselves to this piece!

To Our Dancers ~ This was by far one of our favorite semesters and we are honestly devastated that we will not be able to perform it, but are SO thankful for the time we all had together. Obviously this isn't the way we expected to have our last semester go, but we feel genuinely so lucky to get to have watched all of you push yourselves and grow so much in the time we had. You should all be so proud, we certainly are. This dance was so special for us, and we wouldn't have wanted to do it with any other group! Rehearsal Advisor: Chelsea Goldberg

This dance was the culmination of my four years in RDG. It was not what I originally wanted it to be, but in the short period I was able to choreograph and teach it, it blossomed into the piece that I am most proud of. It was the hard work, dedication, frustration, and pain that are necessary for finding and creating beauty. Not only is the product beautiful, but the perseverance that preceded it, the strength it demonstrates, the suffering we can experience, are all beautiful depictions of humanity. Originally this dance came out of spite; I’m realizing now that it is so much more than that. I have found a personal metaphor within the piece for the rough patch our world is going through. This experience is awful, but our ability to persevere is beautiful.

I just wanted this dance to be fun and upbeat. Just groovin' with your friends being sassy and cute! All of my beautiful dancers are wonderful movers and are the reason this dance was so fun to create! They were the perfect mix of sharp and smooth and added their own sass to it. I have never created a dance like this before but I was fortunate enough to have the best group of dancers to bring my vision to life. I'm so sad we were not able to show everyone all our hard work on stage but just know I appreciate each and every one of you and saw how hard you worked at rehearsal. Also a special thank you to my seniors. You have all inspired me and I was really looking forward to sharing the stage one last time! This dance is meant to be fun and help dancers explore their saucier sides! While this song is relating to women shaking it at the club, we try to reflect our take on that in the “classiest” way. This hip-hop piece is meant for the dancer looking to improve on prior skill and are looking for a dance to help them “level up”.

How Do You Sleep? and Latch are two of my favorite songs by Sam Smith. I really wanted this dance to be all about the juxtaposition of of being restless but attached and in love at the same time. The beginning is slower, while the end builds, which would have given the audience some suspense and would have allowed for the dancers to grow throughout the dance.

This dance is a mix of flows and sharp movements to create a fun, fast paced piece. It’s technical with some twists, and is fun and emotional. It is full of lots of kicks, floor work, and jumps. The dancers were so ready to display their passion for movement on the stage and eager to go through this exciting journey with me.
