Meet the
PISTON PEAK CREW!
In Cinemas September 25 IN
It all begins when world-famous air racer DUSTY CROPHOPPER returns to hometown Propwash Junction after another victorious racing season. The former crop duster revels in his new career success until a fateful training run changes his course with a career-ending injury. The incident sets into motion a series of events that threatens the future of Dusty’s hometown. Forced to shift gears, he decides to train with the Aerial Fire Fighters at Piston Peak Air Attack Base as a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT). The heroic, often life-threatening efforts involved are admirable – but seemingly impossible to master – particularly if you’re a crop duster-turned-racer with an injury that can’t be ignored.
BLADE RANGER, veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter, heads up the Piston Peak Air Attack team. Blade Ranger is a tough and demanding air boss with a wry sense of humor – and he’s not exactly enthusiastic about his new trainee Dusty.

August / September 2014
Outgoing and spirited air tanker DIPPER is skilled at skimming lakes, scooping up more than 1600 gallons of water and dousing angry fires. A former cargo hauler from Alaska, Dipper is an avid air-racing fan with a major crush on headline racer Dusty. Why did the picture find itself in jail? It was framed – SOLIDA ODDOM, 11, Willowbank Primary School, Auckland
WINDLIFTER is a heavy-lift helicopter who can hoist dozens of trees or a huge tank of fire retardant. The Cherokee Indian’s wisdom is vast – with a deep knowledge of fire folklore, and his connection to nature allows him to sense fires before they’re even spotted.
MARU is the mechanic tug at the Piston Peak Air Attack base. Friendly with a sarcastic sense of humor, he’s been around a long time and has the cluttered hangar to prove it.
Feisty ol’ MAYDAY has been Propwash Junction’s fire and rescue truck for … ever. He’s always rarin’ to go, but he’s lost a little speed over the years. Plus, his hoses are leaky and he can’t see much without his glasses. Park superintendent CAD SPINNER is a luxury Sport Utility Vehicle who’s better suited for a country club than the country. Though completely turned off by dirt, Cad’s not opposed to playing dirty to get his way.
A jolly ex-military transport plane, CABBIE used to drop airborne utility vehicles behind enemy lines in Korea. Now he drops smokejumpers at Piston Peak – it’s a lot like combat, but nobody’s shootin’ at him.
PINECONE, an easygoing Southern soul and AVALANCHE, who once triggered a massive slide, are part of the SMOKEJUMPERS, a fearless team of grounded firefighters. And then there’s Drip, an outgoing dude who’s always leaking oil!
BLACKOUT, also one of the Smokejumpers, once accidentally sawed down an electrical line, cutting power to the lodge for weeks and sending shockwaves through his shortterm memory – at least he thinks so. What is a runner’s favourite subject at school? Jog-raphy – GEORGIA LOWE, 10, Mt Somers Springburn School, Ashburton
They’re all led by DYNAMITE, so named because you don’t wanna set her off!

Hi Upstart, Our whole family really loves Upstart Magazine! My brothers all fight over who gets to enter the competitions first and which prizes are the best. We like reading all the interesting articles from other kids too and my youngest brother likes looking at the pictures – TYLER YOUNG, 9, Hobsonville School, Whenuapai Hi Upstart, My name is Sandra and I am 9 years old. Your magazine is my favourite magazine in the whole world. You always make me giggle, laugh and smile with your funny jokes. There is so much stuff to win and things to do, and that’s awesome. I think you’re the best kids’ magazine by far (you should even win first place for best magazine… if there is such a thing). My sister thinks I’m a baby but I don’t care (because she’s 15). I like Upstart and that will never change –

Hi Upstart, This is my first time reading your magazine. I think it’s the best magazine around. There are lots of prizes and cute pics of animals. When I get a choice of my next magazine, I’m obviously going to pick Upstart. Thanks for being AWESOME! – MADISON McTAINSH, 11, Tauranga Intermediate
Hi Upstart, I have an issue with people talking on their phones while driving. This can cause injuries and accidents. People lose focus on the road and all their attention goes towards the phone. I think phones should be on mute when you’re in a car so the driver doesn’t lose focus and try to pick up the phone. This is for the safety of all children. “I think that I would like for people to think about the talking on phones outcome and the cause and effect. You can ignore your cell phone until you are while driving is as safe and off the road, or can rely on the courtesy bad as drinking of a friend inside the car to pick it up for you. and driving.” I think that talking on phones while driving is as bad as drinking and driving. It’s almost like technology is addictive

Flooding in Northland Hi Upstart, Here in Whangarei there has been some wild weather with lots of flooding. Houses in the Far North have no power and their backyards and roads are completely flooded with enormous amounts of water. The upside is that the rain has finally stopped in Whangarei and I am very happy about that. But for some of the other towns they are still hoping the rain will stop there too. Hopefully things will have settled down by the time you read this. Here are some images – SUSAN

Hi Upstart, My friends Konig, Harrison and I went to Daytona Indoor Racing here in Hamilton. It was just we three on the track riding on go-carts. It was my first visit and it was awesome! The carts were very safe and if you crashed, it wouldn’t have hurt. Konig was being very cautious on the track; he would give way whenever we passed him, while Harrison and I would just speed! But if we needed to turn on a corner we had to brake and turn the wheel hard! Riding on the go-carts was the shortest 30 minutes of my life. The employees there were very generous giving us 10 minutes extra. It costs $25 for 20 minutes. I recommend going to Daytona indoor Racing! – CARLOS WIJNEKUS, 13, St Columba’s Catholic School, Hamilton

letters / ngA r e ta
Hi Upstart, My letter is tell readers a true story about a very brave dog. George was a Jack Russell terrier who lived in Manaia, a small Taranaki town. He was a friendly little dog, who enjoyed his morning walk to the dairy or shops with his owner. On Sunday, 29 April 2007, the five children next door decided to go to the dairy. When they started walking, George followed them. On their way to the Manaia dairy they were attacked by two Pit Bulls. The dogs went straight for the smallest boy. The Pit Bulls were too big for George but he barked and gave a warning and then charged at them. While George kept the dogs away from the children, the children were able to escape. But sadly George was not so lucky. The Pit Bulls turned on him, biting him so badly that he had to be put down by the local vet. The story of George’s bravery was in the newspapers, on the radio, on the internet and on television all around the country. His owner’s phone rang non-stop. There was no doubt about it. George really was a hero – AHAANA NANDINI, 7, Manurewa Central School, Auckland
In 2009, George was posthumously awarded a PDSA Gold Medal (which has been called the animal equivalent of the George Cross) by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals. His owner was presented with the medal by Governor-General Anand Satyanand in a ceremony at Manaia.
Walking 15km – helpful tips Hi Upstart, Have you ever thought of a goal and wanted to achieve it? Well, I have. Walking or running 15km can be very hard. I’m going to tell you some steps you can take to get fit enough to walk or run 15km. 1. Start running around the block. 2. Go for bike rides with your mum or dad. 3. If you have a pool, try to do 5-10 laps. That’s how I reached my goal of running 15km – JACK WIKI, 9, Rototuna Primary School, Hamilton

My Rave….
BY HANNAH LOWE, 12, Ngatea School, Thames
I had been waiting all year for the National Young Leaders Day and finally it had come. We had a lot of laughs heading up to Auckland from Ngatea and once we got to the Vodafone Events Centre, I guessed there were more than 2,000 students and teachers – all there to learn how to become better leaders. The theme for the day was 3D, which stood for Dream, Dare, Develop.
Inspiring story The first speaker was the NYLD manager, Annette Fale. Annette talked about Abby Wutzler from Wellington, the 10-year-old girl who put her own life in danger to warn others on a beach in Samoa that a tsunami was coming, and in doing so saved many lives. I found her story to be very inspirational. I look up to Abby as a leader and role model for everyone around the world, especially the adults and children she saved.
NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY – fun and inspiring!
will succeed.” Throughout Jamie’s inspirational speech, I was thinking, “Yes, I can do it because I believe I can and I know I can! I just need to try!” And then I thought that if I was given the opportunity to go back and change just one thing I’d done in my past it would be to finish the whole 800m race in Jamie Fitzgerald Athletics, because I know now I was only ‘putting out my sea anchor and slowing myself down’.
Cam can!
Charlie Laumatia The next speaker, Cam Calkoen was my last year’s favourite. Cam is a very inspirational speaker and he lives his life with awesomeness in it and never lets anyone say he Famous adventurer can’t do this or he’s not normal. He told a childhood story about when he stayed at his friend’s house for the night. When he awoke in the night he discovered he had wet the bed. Charlie told us he was so embarrassed he got straight up and walked to the front door to run home. But his friend came up behind him and told him to go back to bed. As they walked back into the room, Charlie’s friend climbed onto the top bunk where Charlie had been sleeping and said, “Dude, did you wet my bed? Oh, I do it all the time.” Charlie got really embarrassed and admitted to it. His friend didn’t laugh. He just said, “We can flip the mattress over.” And that’s exactly what they did. They put fresh sheets and everything on and went back to sleep. The next morning they talked to Charlie’s friend’s parents about it and they were fine. But Charlie went to school on Monday really scared his friend was going to tell everyone. But his friend promised he would never tell a soul – and he kept his promise. Charlie said his friend showed leadership skills by not telling anyone and keeping his promise to Charlie. They are still great friends today.
