IN CINEMAS JULY 3 It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snotlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the centre of a battle to protect the peace. FISHLEGS Resident dragon nerd and statistics guru, Fishlegs is a skittish and lovable oaf who seems to only get bigger with age. He’s a timid sort, reluctant to break or even bend rules, preferring instead to play it safe.

confident, competitive champion of the Dragon Races and Hiccup’s longtime girlfriend. She has a strong sense of duty and will always do what must be done without regard for herself.

RUFFNUT Ruffnut is the cunning sister half of the notorious twin duo. Much like her brother, Tuffnut, she delights in all things dangerous and against the rules.

son of Stoick the Vast, chieftain of Berk. No longer a runt, but still lanky by comparison, Hiccup is the island’s ace flier and resident dragon expert.

Species: MONSTROUS NIGHTMARE Class: STOKER Hookfang and Snotlout have a complicated relationship. Whereas most dragons obey their riders’ commands, Hookfang often enjoys doing the opposite of what Snotlout says. However, despite their occasional disagreements, Snotlout and Hookfang are both warriors at heart and work very well together in combat or competition with the other dragon riders.

Species: HIDEOUS ZIPPLEBACK Class: MYSTERY Much like the twins who ride them, Barf & Belch spend more time bickering than working together. The only time they do see eye-to-eye, however, is when enjoying a nice display of destruction – usually caused by Ruffnut & Tuffnut!

TOOTHLESS Species: NIGHT FURY Class: STRIKE Once thought of as the ‘unholy offspring of lightening and death itself’, Toothless (20 in dragon years) has proven to be much more of a giant, winged pussycat than the stuff of nightmares. Playful, inquisitive, and intelligent, Toothless is more Hiccup’s best friend than his pet. He is extremely protective of his Viking soul mate, and will stop at nothing to guard him from all harm. As the last known specimen of the Night Fury species, Toothless is indisputably special. He commands respect from dragons and humans alike.

STORMFLY Species: DEADLY NADDER Class: Tracker Although she preens and grooms herself like the most fastidious of birds, Stormfly actually possesses a playful spirit. Whether it’s winning dragon races with Astrid or fetching shiny objects, Stormfly is as game for a fun time as she is deadly in battle!

CLOUDJUMPER Species: STORMCUTTER Class: SHARP The owl-like Cloudjumper has been Valka’s companion of choice for flying and rescuing other dragons over the last 20 years. Cloudjumper’s pride, confidence, and large size lead him to think of himself as the top dragon in Valka’s mountain fortress, second only to the Bewilderbeast, who is the king of all dragons in the nest.

Species: GRONCKLE Class: BOULDER Unlike other Gronckles, Meatlug is actually a very sweet and affectionate dragon, especially with her rider, Fishlegs. Meatlug and Fishlegs do everything together – fly, research dragon trivia and, of course, eat!

We’re pleased to announce the winners of our HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 competition from Upstart Magazine April/May 2014. We asked readers to create their own dragon, then photograph it and send it to us for judging. Imaginations went wild as literally hundreds of entries rolled in at Upstart HQ from kids all over the country! It took us a while to judge but eventually we decided on our two big winners! And here they are….

My dragon name: REFLECTIKO My dragon characteristics: He is called Reflectiko because he has a shiny silver body that can reflect the sun. When his body gets too hot from the reflections, he breathes fire. He hates fighting. When it looks like another dragon wants to fight, he reflects the sun into their eyes and takes off into the clouds. All his friends like him because of his fun personality. His favourite trick is to reflect the sun to a point where his friends can roast marshmallows. Age group: 10 to 13 years ALYSSA CAFE, 10, Hillsborough Primary School, Auckland My dragon name: Tsunami My dragon characteristics: Tsunami adores the outdoors and she has spirals on her body that glow when she is deep under the water. She has lots of friends that love her because of her glowing scales. When Tsunami is angry at another dragon, she smashes the water with her tail sending massive waves in every direction. She is 8 years (dragon years) old and can already fly and swim faster than the wind. Tsunami is a Seawing so she can breathe under water. She is also the missing princess to the Seawing kingdom. I think Tsunami’s coolest trick is when she makes waves big enough for her friends to have a surfing competition.

We went to the museum, Te Papa – it is the best museum ever! It had a rollercoaster ride and another ride where you visited a volcano. We also went on the cable car, which was lots of fun. MY HOLIDAY Our magical trip to Universal Studios, Singapore

Hi Upstart, We had an enjoyable long trip to Sentosa, Singapore. When we found a huge fake castle we decided to go there and have some fun. The unique place was called Universal Studios. The most exciting ride I’ve ever been on was Far Far Away from the movie, Shrek. We got very wet when the donkey sneezed. I heard lots of children laughing. I felt very dizzy after the Mini Rollercoaster ride. Another crazy place was the Sesame Street Space Chase. It had aliens that made loud sounds. I also rode the Madagascar Crate Adventure. And we found Water World, which was an attraction where people had a battle with water and fake guns. I got very frightened because I didn’t know where the bullets would land In Sci-Fi City, there was a Transformers Ride: The Ultimate 4D Battle. We picked up our own 4D glasses and quickly jumped into the car. Then we suddenly moved into different weird and noisy rooms while we were rotating. Lastly, there was Revenge of the Mummy, a motion ride that went backwards, fell and tilted fast. Hi Upstart, I went on a school trip to Te Ao Marama. We went there on a bus. The hosts gave us a Māori greeting. We all went in the marae and the hosts spoke to us. When they finished talking we started our tour. They led us up a path, through a cave and into a village. All the houses were made out of flax. We came to place where, in the past, the Māori people would have talked about the war. We learned that they used to bang a log of wood to warn everybody about danger. Te Tai Tokerau Festival ‘a blast’ Hi Upstart, Well, this will be my last time writing to you, as I am now 13 years of age and loving high school. My birthday was on April 8th and the prize you gave was very special because it arrived not long after my birthday, so thank you Upstart. Now, what I really want to talk about is high school. I have six friends I hang out with and we just went to Te Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools Cultural Festival to represent WGHS in kapa haka. It was great because we got a hāngī (if you don’t know what a hāngī is, it’s a traditional Māori feast cooked underground). It was delicious! You can find our video on YouTube. The latest craze hitting the school playground is loom bands... and they are really cool! But for some reason most people think they are just for girls. I agree that they are great for making colourful bracelets and jewellery, and the sets you buy are definitely aimed at girls, with all the pinks and pictures of girls on the front.

Tricky to learn But why should they just be for girls? The looming process is actually quite tricky, and takes a lot of concentration and skills. When you work on the loom you learn how to control your hands and you learn to be patient. You must learn how to deal with frustration because sometimes the looping goes wrong; or you miss out a step; or one of the bands breaks – and it can drive you totally crazy. You must follow instructions, and use your imagination.

I think these things are really good for both boys and girls to learn.

We ALL love them!

In fact, at my school, it seems like the bands are more popular with the boys than the girls. Some boys just buy packets of bands in darker colours, like blacks, browns, blues, greens; and also camouflage, glow-in-the dark and spotted ones. Some boys admit they like bright colours anyway and wear the bands in rainbow colours, and that’s nice to see because there aren’t actually ‘boy colours’ and ‘girl colours’ anyway. When I went into the city and met Prince William, guess what he was wearing? You got it! Loom bands! He was actually wearing more than Princess Kate, so that must tell you something!

Get looming everybody!

Instead of just making jewellery, there are so many other things you can make with them. I have made snakes, light sabers, key rings, bag tags and more. If you want to, you can go to YouTube and learn how to make things from Star Wars and Minecraft, or watches... all sorts of stuff. There are even videos of boys teaching you how to make things on the loom. And it is nice to make stuff to give to other people. Boys and girls all make stuff to give to their friends and family. And it doesn’t really matter what they make. It’s just nice that they want to share the items they create. So I think it is time for everyone who is into it, to be proud of it, and get making!

National LEGO Building Comp – WINNER! ®

‘LEGOLAND Ahoy’ – that’s what 12-year-old REBEKAH SMITH from Cambridge will soon be shouting, as the winner of the 2014 National LEGO® Building Competition. After wowing the judges with her six-foot long model of shipwrecked Gulliver on Lilliput Island, Rebekah and her family will be embarking on an expensespaid holiday to LEGOLAND® Florida theme park. “My grandma gave me the Gulliver’s Travels book and when I was thinking about entering, my dad suggested I think outside the box and try and use LEGO in different ways so I decided to do that,” says Rebekah.

As a first time entrant to the competition, Rebekah’s brothers’ huge LEGO collection came in handy to build Gulliver across two weeks with over 15,000 bricks and 100 minifigures. Over 2,000 children around the country also got creative these April school holidays to enter the annual competition, now in its 11th year, run by LEGO New Zealand and Toyworld. The effort and detail children put into their entries is impressive and made judging very difficult, says Toyworld buyer Repeka Haurua. Rebekah’s prize includes return flights to Florida, USA, five nights accommodation and four days family admission to LEGOLAND Florida theme park and NZD$1,500 spending money.

I do if I find some young birds without their mum?

If you find some young birds, they may not actually be lost.

Mum and Dad birds might just have left them for a while to get them some food. You should leave them alone, and watch to see if the parent bird comes back to feed the chick. Help a young bird if you notice any of the following; • If the parents do not come back to feed the chick • If a nestling has fallen from the nest and you know for certain which nest it came from, try putting it back (without putting yourself at risk)

Rescue a bird if:

• An injury is obvious • The bird is having trouble standing or flying • One or both of its legs are dragging • The beak is damaged • A baby or fledgling is orphaned • It is trapped or entangled and cannot free itself • It is has some oil or chemical substance on it

• If you spot a fledgling on the ground watch from a distance as the parents may be close by. If you are worried about the safety of the fledglin g, then put it in the middle of a thick bush as high as possible, eg. a high hedge or a clump of bamboo.

• It has hit a window or been hit by a car • The bird has been caught by
