Philippines Fundraiser Brings In Cash, Donations for Typhoon Victims Organizers of an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet benefiting victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines were happy to see over a hundred guests coming to Tulane University’s campus for the event – and the taxi was a real surprise. In addition to the cash raised from admission to the Friday, April 4 event, one of the diners approached the event’s organizers to offer one of his own historic treasures: A WWII-era taxi from the Philippines. The taxi is in need of slight refurbishment but is a valuable antique vehicle. In addition to this unexpected donation, the event raised $834 in admissions at the door, all of which will go to benefit families in the Philippines. The first $600 will be enough to purchase a new fishing boat and equipment for struggling fishermen who have lost their livelihood to the destructive typhoon. All remaining proceeds will be contributed to rebuilding efforts by the charitable group NOLA Loves the Philippines.

Several local chefs banded together to create this community meal as a way of reaching a hand from the New Orleans community to the Philippines after the 2013 super typhoon. The lunch was a collaboration of Tulane Dining Services by Sodexo, the Tulane Center of Public Service, and the charitable group NOLA Loves the Philippines. It was held at Bruff Commons on the Tulane University campus. Guests enjoyed Tinola, a Philippines take on the universal comfort food chicken soup, and a tropical fruit salad. This collaboration of New Orleans chefs and festive communal dining was aimed at harnessing the New Orleans spirit of food and fun for purposes of disaster relief. Those who coordinated the event feel that after surviving Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is in a unique position to understand the needs of the Philippines after the typhoon, which devastated parts of Southeast Asia November, 2013.

Together, we've raised

After Typhoon Yolanda ravaged the Philippines we wanted to help the people who had just survived this natural disaster. Juan and I started to work on a few ideas about how we could raise money for the Philippines. We had our ďŹ rst fundraising week in December right before the end of classes. Over Winter Break we learned about NOLA Loves the Philippines and decided that we wanted to donate our money to their mission of buying boats for people. We really liked what they were doing and what the

organization stands for and that is why we wanted to support them. It was important to us to help the survivor of the typhoon because no one should have to face rebuilding his/her life without any support. We wanted to help a community that needed help. The fundraiser in Bruff helped to raise awareness for the organization because it made people more aware of NOLA Loves the Philippines and it got people talking about the Philippines again. In the time since the typhoon

many people haveforgotten about it and we wanted people to start talking about it again. This fundraiser helped to raise awareness by helping us to promote the fact thatthere is still a need in the Philippines. I think this event went really well and I think everyone had fun participating. Thank you Sodexo for hosting the event. Lindsey Curewitz
