FOUNDER’S LETTER - SU M M ER J OHN SON Welcome to issue #003 of Upward Magazine. We have lots in store for you this month as we focus on Planning for Summer Vacations. I think we have a few good options for you. For our cover story, we have Fashion Model Krystle Wilson sharing on family, travel, and career.

Our top location destination this year is Lugano, Switzerland. While exploring Milan and Venice earlier this year, I took a train to Lugano and stayed at the Hotel Lugano Dante’ in the center of town. This hotel gave the perfect backdrop to the classic fairy tale that is

summed up in this whimsical place.

Swiss infrastructure perfectly balanced with the lush vegetation of Monte Bre’ gives you the best of both worlds.

So in this issue of Upward, one of our writers Brittany Templeton who lived in Lugano for four years, will share with us how great it is as a long-term stay. We are excited to share stories on Czech’s Spa Town, Milan, and lots of inspiration for your next trip. So no matter where you travel this summer or how long you stay, we hope that your trip will be all that you dream of, and full of surprises!

Professional model Krystle Wilson gives us insight on keeping up a sparkling career, world travel and starting a family, without missing a beat.

I arrived at a restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn earlier than I had planned. I noticed the morning mommy crowd getting thicker, catering to breakfast for families. I started answering a text and saw my cracked iPhone screen, which I still needed to get fixed, staring back at me in an unforgiving manner. My perfectionist tendencies kicked in and I decided to keep it hidden throughout the interview. Krystle arrived with her adorable two-year-old son, Lukas. When she walked in, everyone in the place could tell she was a model, even at nine months pregnant! We introduced each other and at some point I caught sight of the cracked screen on her cell phone. It was a relief to see that we are all humans, and soon we were laughing about nearly destroying our phones. Lukas, whose manners were like those

of a well-groomed adult gentleman, sat situated with headphones and educational games. Krystle describes the ins and outs of being a model, her love story with fellow model/entrepreneur Armando Cabral, and the changes motherhood brings.

This is no regular life. From humble beginnings, this American beauty has been the face of major clients such as Gap, J. Crew, Forever 21 and Saks 5th Ave. Although Krystle was living the wonderful life of a model with all of the trims, at a certain point in her career, she felt ready to start a family but was concerned about her future as a fashion model. Nevertheless, Krystle followed her desire. It also doesn’t hurt to be lovely on the inside and out, as Krystle is. She found favor with an agent whom she worked with in South Africa, who encouraged her to continue to model

during her first pregnancy, and she quickly began working with an agency for pregnant models.

At first, Krystle was intimidated by the idea of how her life would change after having children,

but that didn’t stop her from doing what she loves.

Modeling and family were both a dream come true for Krystle, and she wasn’t willing to compromise one for the other. She says that her friends who model are amazed at how she still works. “Most

of them just couldn’t wrap their minds around having children at this point in their career,” she says. Krystle tells them that their exciting careers do not have to end because they start a family, and neither does travel. She even makes the point that, “it becomes more fun, because of all that a child can bring to the table.” She tells me how many of her friends were nervous about bringing children on airplane. This is one scenario that most new parents become apprehensive about before booking a flight. Krystle makes sure that Lukas has plenty of activities and gives him a variety of snacks so that he doesn’t get bored. Another tip she makes for traveling with children is to pack very lightly. “Bring one of everything... jeans, dress, sweater, jacket, heels, flats...all in one suitcase.” She learned this while moving through Europe and South Africa for different modeling jobs. She would sometimes travel on trains where having less luggage really comes in handy, and makes a much more relaxing trip as well.

Krystle and Armando love to travel, which is fortunate because their company, Armando Cabral, is manufactured in Italy, where they visit the factory twice a year. They also both have family members who live outside the U.S., and so they frequently visit her relatives in Antigua on their island estate or Armando’s parents in Portugal. It takes real effort to make sure their families know the children. The couple even decided to build their vacation home close to Armando’s parents outside of Lisbon in Cascais.

Given that it is on the seaside, Lukas enjoys picking pebbles and shells out on the sandy shore. Krystle and Armando love the cobblestone streets and pasta in town. It’s always a trip she looks forward to. She says that another favorite destination is Stockholm. This city is full of families and has a wonderful infrastructure that caters to children.

It is also a plus because the attitudes of the people cater to families as well. Krystle recalled being in Sweden for a photo shoot when all of a sudden a child had a raging temper tantrum in the middle of a restaurant floor. The raging child’s mother just kicked back like the rest of the restaurant and ignored it. Though Lukas wasn’t the culprit of any tantrums, at least that time, she says Stockholm gave her an outlook on parenting that made allowances for the normalcies of childhood. Krystle’s laid-back yet planned out approach to parenting and career is refreshing to see, and I’ll continue to take notes-

he company was started by two childhood friends, Welella Neguisse and Anna Papadopoulos, born on different continents— Africa and Europe—but raised together in Berlin, Germany. Twenty years of friendship, a strong love for Welella’s native Ethiopian culture and a desire to help people fostered their vision to create something that could effect real change in Ethiopia. Welella is a former United Nations worker and Anna has a background in business, which together they fused to create Welana.

Welana (a combination of their names Wel and Ana) tackles the lack of employment opportunities with a special focus on female empowerment, and employs female weavers to help lift women out of poverty. In turn, Welana has introduced Ethiopia’s

intricate hand weaving techniques to the world market, showcasing its magnificent beauty and artistry all while empowering local communities through sustainable income development. The textiles integrate traditional Ethiopian patterns and designs with European minimalist style. The materials used such as cotton and eri-silk are also sourced locally in Ethiopia.Welella and Anna’s firsthand exposure to the struggles in Ethiopia had a life-changing effect on them. It cultivated in them a yearning desire to help people there live a dignified life that they believe all people deserve. Welana partners with non-profit organization Connected in Hope and an Ethiopian fair trade company, Sabahar, which provides fair trade standards, fair payments, provision of health insurance and pension with additional community benefits.

Welana aspires to show local Ethiopians that as individuals, “they have the capacity to generate an income and sustain their own livelihood.”

Welana helps them capture the world’s attention and share their brilliant colorful products.

Welana sells these beautifully handcrafted and designed shawls, throws and towels, all while emphasizing the importance of conscious consumption. They even have a reuse and recycle program to help protect the environment. Such is the extent of Welana’s approach to honest living by not wasting valuable resources but creating a continuous cycle.

Welella and Anna’s first hand exposure to the struggles in Ethiopia had a life-changing effect on them.

One woman in Ethiopia writes: “My mother carried fuel wood from the jungles near Kolfe to the markets in Addis Ababa. She would take me to the forest to help and I would struggle to carry my bundle in such long distances. Today my life is very different because of Connected in Hope.

Connected in Hope pays for my transportation to work in Entoto. We are all producing more

and selling more. I am learning English. I am able to support my three children as well as my sister and her daughter. The children are all in school.

When my income increases I will be able to buy a refrigerator. I hope my children will be educated and get a decent job so they don’t have to face what I faced.” Welana is a role model in sustainable fashion, putting people first.

Having lived, worked and studied in 12 different countries, Flynn Coleman is nothing short of impressive. As an international Human Rights Attorney, Coleman also wears the hats of numerous other titles, such as TEDx Speaker, teacher, author, innovator and even former competitive athlete.

With her endless list of accomplishments, it’s her unique attitude that stands apart. She chooses to focus on others and give credit to her surrounding support as a collaborative effort. Speaking on the success of her nonprofit, Coleman tells us that “it does take a village, and we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us. From my family and closest friends, to the people I admire, near, and far, to those I have learned from and those I work with, no one does anything alone.”

Spending countless hours flipping through photography magazines at Barnes & Nobles, Andre Perry quickly realized his interest. A graduate from the Art Institute of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, Perry hasn’t put down his camera since he first purchased it in 2000. A travel guru and photography extraordinaire, Andre has certainly found his niche for combining the two. With Nigeria and Rio de Janeiro his top two photo locations thus far, his next stop is also in Brazil: Bahia.

A spontaneous, yet careful traveler, Perry has taken travel photography to a whole new level. While he may head towards destinations on his bucket list, he tells us that what often sparks his interest in locations are other photographers.

So what does Perry’s creative process look like? First and foremost, Perry likes to keep it simple. When traveling as a photographer, he only brings one camera and one lense. “I try to keep the amount of equipment to a minimum and secured in a compact bag.

I also make sure to always have outlet converters for all my electronics.”

It’s easy to spend all his time behind a camera while traveling, but Perry manages to balance his work as a photographer well with experiencing the locations visited. “To be honest, when I’m behind the lens it doesn’t feel like work. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything because when I am shooting, I am also engaging with my surroundings and interacting with my subjects!”

It all sounds too good to be true. We asked Erin about how their children handle a constant traveling lifestyle “Travel is great for kids,” Erin says. “They are sponges and soak up languages, culture, and information. Our kids watched The Sound of Music the day we went on tour in Salzburg, Austria. They learned about tidal systems in eastern Canada, where they have the highest tides in the world. They learned about U.S. presidents when we visited Mount Rushmore. It’s an education that is memorable.”

The big question that stands out for most parents is about schooling. Do you have to be a teacher to homeschool your kids? “Travel is supplying the best part of their education,” Erin explains. “It teaches them geography like no classroom can. They learn basic science museums all over the world. They can count to 10 in four languages.

LIONFISH: A BEAUTIFUL MENACE

ntil recently I had pretty normal hobbies: running, reading, cooking...but my newest pastime, Lionfish hunting, seems to catch people off guard. Dressed in my finest bikini, with a three prong Trident Hawaiian sling in one hand, and a large grab bag in the other, I spend about an hour or two every afternoon free diving under abandoned piers or around coral reefs on the South Shore of Vieques looking for Lionfish. The word “lion” brings to mind large majestic creatures that rule the African savannahs with only one predator—the human. The same is almost true for the lionfish—however, there is one key difference: these beautiful tiger-striped fish, with feathery fins that arc out like a peacock in full strut, are wickedly venomous.

The Lionfish, also known as the devil firefish, is the most wanted creature along all of the Caribbean and Latin American coastlines. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has described them as “one of the most aggressively invasive species on the planet... their species has been called the biggest ecological disaster ever to hit the Western Atlantic.” While no one is certain how this Indo-Pacific fish made it to the Caribbean, many believe it is due to aquariums releasing the fish after realizing that lionfish eat all the other fish.

Why are they so dangerous? The ocean relies on a delicate balance between the reef fish and the coral reefs—the reef fish eat nutrients and algae off the coral and allows the reefs to remain healthy and continue to have biodiversity. The lionfish consume juvenile grouper, snapper and

other species that play an integral role in the health of tropical water ecosystems. Since lionfish thrive so well in nutrient-rich waters, ocean researchers have found that the presence of lionfish has decimated native marine life on some reefs by as much as 95%.

“In 2006,” says Mark Bras, lionfish hunter and Vieques Trust Oceanographer, “I net caught my first lionfish. Ten years later, I caught my 1000th. I have no idea how many I have shot. Sometimes, when we filet a large fish we find up to 40 small fish inside.” Adult lionfish have very few natural predators and are very good hunters. Their venom, located on their spines, is deadly to most creatures and while it is rarely fatal to healthy adults, will cause extreme pain, sweating, respiratory problems, and paralysis.

The good news is that lionfish taste good with a light white meat comparable to grouper or snapper.

Many chefs agree that the fish is a great substitute for almost any white fish recipe and have added Lionfish ceviche, sushi, sashimi and grilled filet to their menus. In 2010, NOAA started the Lionfish-as-food campaign, emphasizing that the fish are venomous when they sting but not poisonous to consume. “The hope is that we can eat our way out of this mess,” says Mark, as he carefully pulls a recently shot fish off his gun and into an ice chest. “We often try to catch the small ones and bring them back to our aquarium so the children can come and see them. It’s part of our active learning program.”

Currently, divers are encouraged to kill lionfish.

Many schools have started implementing lionfish hunting into their marine biology curriculums.

The hope is with awareness and support from the restaurant community, the battle against the lionfish will start to reduce their numbers.

While many believe I majored in Yodeling, punching holes in Swiss cheese and taste testing swiss chocolate, what I did do was live in a magical city for four years. Lugano, Switzerland should be on everyone’s bucket list.

With the crisp morning air running through the streets, the Italian Alps directly before you, the yellow and red tulips tangled with scents of magnolias, you begin to question whether you’ve entered a Hollywood set or if this sight is truly reality. This was my immediate thought the first time I entered Lugano at 17 years old.

As the largest town in the holiday region of Ticino, Lugano is one of Switzerland’s most important

financial centers, as well as a town of parks, flowers, villas and sacred buildings. With Mediterranean flair, Lugano offers all the advantages of a worldclass city, combined with the cachet of a small town.

For myself, Lugano became home. During the four years I resided in Lugano, and studied at Franklin University Switzerland, visits from family and friends became my most anticipated adventures. I lived for the moment I picked each visitor up at the train station. Maneuvering through the locals commuting to Milan, or the families heading downtown for a boating day, seeing the reaction of each individual that stepped off that train was priceless. Each jaw dropping lower than the last.

“Living in a warm coastal area is conducive to working with ceramics,” Hadley Sedgwick confirms. “There are many long, warm, wet days here.”

The damper air makes the clay easier to work with, and the long days allow for plenty of studio time. Hadley Clay Studio resides in a private, wooded area.

“I feel connected to the natural ecosystem when I work, it’s very pleasant.”

There is certainly something uniquely organic and primordial about working with clay; crafting a vision out of a little piece of the earth itself.

Hadley began her business by selling readily made animal mugs from her own designs. It wasn’t long before her customers began to request custom im-

ages: Now she rarely makes ready-made mugs, focusing primarily on portraying people’s pets.”I wouldn’t say I have a favorite animal.”

Many of Hadley’s subjects are cats and dogs, but she does occasionally paint a barnyard animal, birds or fish — although she was once asked to paint the DNA strand of a prize bulldog. “Some pet images are more fun to portray than others but that’s usually because they’re making silly faces or conveying a lot of attitude.”

Given that she spends so much time recreating their faces, I had to ask: was Hadley a cat person or a dog person? “I am a dog person because I can hug them and take them for walks. I love cats but they’re more aloof and independent.” I can sympathize with her preference; cats are solitary creatures. “I am also severely allergic to cats,” Hadley added. Well, that certainly sets them at a disadvantage.

Memorial Day Weekend marks the official start of the summer season here on the East End. Montauk Highway, normally a quiet country road, becomes a crowded parade of eager beachgoers in sun hats and gingham. The mass caravan through quaint main streets and historic villages drop off vacationers, day trippers and the urban exodus habitué to their respective address in what the outside world has come to know as: The Hamptons.

The warm welcome to summer usually happens the weekend prior to infamous Memorial Day Weekend. We excitedly gear up for the anticipated long weekend in the sun. Early arrivals grab a bottle of rosé and and listen to live music at Wölffer Estate in Sagaponack. Others snag a seat outside at the Montauk Brewing Co. taproom or try to be the first in line for ice cream on Main Street. For many of us, it’s a time to get out a big blanket and head to our local beach or fire up the grill for friends. As it happens, the past several three-day starts to summer tended toward the wet or cold. A little sweater weather for a sunset picnic or a sharing a bottle of red by the fire is nothing to complain about.

The energy is high as the population triples and local or not, we all look forward to a magical summer by the ocean, full of possibility and keeping the world at bay for a few short months.

Go on and raise a glass of the pink stuff. We may await rain or shine like a groundhog in February this Memorial Day, but summer will come.
