Letter From the Executive Director Dear Brothers,
I am privileged to continue serving as your Executive Director. Fraternities in the United States are under the microscope more than at any time in recent history. Some universities are establishing significant control over the conduct of students outside of the classroom -- and much of this control includes overseeing behavior in fraternity housing, which they feel is particularly worthy of oversight. In private colleges and universities, this is starting to impinge on our basic constitutional rights to free speech and free association. I am also afraid that these ideas are starting to seep across the northern border.

We knew that at the international level we had to improve our commitment to health and safety – and Zeta Psi has done that with a focus on reducing alcohol consumption during recruitment and by becoming more compliant with changing societal expectations. We are committed to preventing hazing and sexual misconduct in all of their forms. When possible, we have partnered with administrators on various campuses so that we can stay aligned with their expectations as to what is and isn’t appropriate behavior. We have discarded the long-standing model of chapter services and replaced it with a modern management approach that has improved each chapter’s behavior. We have also helped prepare our chapter leaders for meaningful employment. However, these efforts won’t be enough.
a single elder association in Zeta Psi – and that includes our best – that could not use more volunteer time and financial support. This applies to the our international chapters, too. In the coming years, we will celebrate the Iota Chapter’s 150th Anniversary and the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Phi Lambda chapter at the University of Washington. In 2022, we will celebrate 175 years of Zeta Psi and in 2029, 150 years as an International Fraternity (Theta Xi, University of Toronto). We have much to celebrate and much to do to accomplish our goals. On a personal note, you are warmly invited to attend our convention this summer in Baltimore, MD. The Zeta Psi convention is a great experience for active and elders alike. A fine group of spouses and kids attend each year -- and you and your family are invited to join us. For Zeta Psi to truly thrive today, we are going to need many more elder volunteers at the local level to serve in a wide variety of advisory roles – by helping active officers, providing internship and career guidance, serving on our alumni boards, joining committees and yes... providing financial support. Letter From the Phi Alpha Dear Brothers,
Zeta Psi finished off 2018 in an excellent position. We are following that up with a great start to 2019 as we are thriving at nearly all of our chapters. Our chapter development efforts have rarely been as active as they are now. We are working at re-establishing chapters at several schools and are starting a chapter at George Mason University. As we continue to expand our brotherhood into Europe, we now have a chapter at the University of Paris and an interest group at the University of Bristol.

At the same time, the fraternity system is under attack on many fronts due to wellpublicized issues with risk management violations regarding alcohol, safety and sexual misconduct. Several leading universities have openly discussed banning Greeks. This is a real threat and we must address it by holding ourselves accountable to the highest possible standards. While the IHQ staff has had to deal with the few individuals and chapters that fail to follow our risk management guidelines, most chapters get it. However, being good at risk management should not define who we are. It should be a skill we learn and practice routinely. Zeta Psi chapters and other fraternities are proactively leading efforts on campuses to spotlight the importance of a safe environment for women and the need for healthy relationships. Zeta Psi has partnered with the One Love Foundation (https://www.joinonelove.org) and has helped lead discussions on several campuses about both what a healthy relationship is and how to end unhealthy ones. As we look ahead, I have asked our leaders at both the international and local levels to focus on the fraternal ties that bind us
together. Our ritual focuses on five specific values. I’ve challenged our active Phis to spend some time at chapter meetings discussing these values, what they mean and how brothers should endeavor to live by them. This is a key foundation for our brotherhood that we do not spend enough time discussing. At our Grand Chapter meeting in Baltimore, we will vote on the question of allowing the five English words that are a translation of our ritual values to be used in public. Very few brothers can even recite what the five values are, much less discuss them and work to make them part of their daily lives. My goal is that we can have training materials that employ the words and invite discussion and training about living up to those values. We are much more than an organization with great events, shared living experiences, leadership training and career development. We are a brotherhood and like many things in life, you must work at it to succeed. I believe this is part of our obligation to help brothers attain success at being fraternity members, which will pay them dividends in their careers, marriages and life. Please join us this August in Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor for our 2019 Convention. In addition to our great programs, the Leadership Training Institute and our Grand Chapter meeting, we will also have excellent social events, including an evening at the National Aquarium for tours and dinner. In the beginning of the semester, we had Greek letter officer elections for all positions, with Alex Lee taking over as the new Phi. Currently, there are three new initiates. We are looking to have a paintball event with the elders in the near future. Convention Recap - Ithaca 2018
2018 marked 150 years since the founding of the Psi Chapter at Cornell University. One of Zeta Psi’s longest-operating chapters, the Psi has continually been a strong group that truly embodies the values of Zeta Psi. As such, it was rightly determined that the annual convention should celebrate such a momentous anniversary for one of Zeta Psi’s flagship chapters.
I
n August 2018, Zeta Psi achieved what some thought to be impossible. Against the odds, hundreds of Zetes from across the world congregated in Ithaca, New York for several days of brotherhood, leadership training and celebration in the name of Zeta Psi. #Ithaca2018 was a success. Throughout the week, Zetes and their guests enjoyed a tremendous slate of events that showcased the area’s natural beauty as well as Cornell’s historic campus, including the Psi chapter house. Distinguished Service Awards The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor that Zeta Psi can bestow upon one of its members. This year, Zeta Psi was extremely honored to present Distinguished Service Awards to two worthy recipients:

LEADING WITH
GRACE

What is grace? What is it about grace that connects us to our brotherhood?
G
race is a word that gets tossed around quite a bit. It is something which is offered before a meal and can describe someone who embodies elegance and poise. Grace can be an honorific conferred upon a person who deserves respect, a way of showing someone favor or a means of forgiveness. For those who lose their position of authority, it is said that they have “fallen from grace.” Grace can also be part of a salutation or benediction to those whom we wish well. In our own Circle, I am sure

someone at the Convention in August will quip, “Oh, look! Jeff Ball has graced us with his presence yet again.” Given some of the recent challenges facing Zeta Psi and the Greek system at large, it may be a good time to reexamine the word and how it may best apply to us and our values. For those in attendance at the Grand Chapter Meeting during the past several years (and especially last year in Ithaca), many difficult subjects were debated and voted upon. Irrespective of the outcome, the one thing which really struck me is the need for us to be able to
treat each other with grace, particularly when we disagree with our brothers when confronted with difficult issues. But what is our definition of grace? How does grace apply to us? Why should grace apply to us? In attempting to grapple with these questions, it may be helpful to turn to a theological definition of grace, which is “the free and undeserved kindness given from one person to another, even when the former has been wounded or offended by

the latter.” Grace is kindness that is given to the ill-deserving. In a theological sense, grace is the love of God that is given to the unlovely and the peace of God that is given to the restless. Grace can also be defined as the unmerited favor of God. Grace can be defined as the opposite of karma – which is about getting what we think we and others have brought upon ourselves. Grace is about not getting what we actually deserve (the consequences of our own bad actions) and all about getting what we do not deserve – mercy, forgiveness and redemption.
people every day, and it is easy to dismiss them or respond harshly. By showing grace, we are acknowledging them as thinking, feeling human beings. We are meeting them where they are, even if they do not return the gesture. In the final analysis, we do not have to like them but we do need to show them grace. We show grace through our accountability to ourselves and knowing how we wish to be treated by others. Our worldviews may be different and our life choices may not align, yet as members of the human race and brothers in Zeta Psi, we have an
I have done a poor job for most of my life of heeding the words which I have just written. I am getting better, but I am not there yet – I might get it right about 50% of the time. All too often, I still find my interactions lacking the grace which I so desperately seek to receive from others, partly because I have allowed my own sense of arrogant superiority to shade how I treat others, and partly because it’s kind of fun to be a snarky knucklehead. However, my lack of grace happens mostly because it is easier than listening to and respecting others. In recent years, I hope I have moved away from these destructive

This is a truth that should encompass everything that we do, particularly in regards to how we treat each other as brothers in Tau Kappa Phi. Grace is manifested through the deepest foundation of our values, which show our faithful loyalty to the fraternity and our selfless devotion to one another. Authentic and genuine values consistently reinforce our deepening relationships with one another and help us lead honest and principled lives.

With all of that said, how and when do we show grace?

We show grace by being deferential to each other. When conflict arises, we understand that there are always at least two points of view and two sides to every story. It is through grace that we listen and seek understanding from those with whom we disagree. This does NOT mean that we compromise our own beliefs, but we demonstrate that we have a willingness to listen – not with the intent of responding, but rather, with the intent of hearing.
Those are examples as to how we show grace. But when should we show grace? The answer is simple. When in doubt – lead with grace. When someone else is treating you harshly – lead with grace. When faced with difficult topics and conversations – lead with grace. When confronted with challenging personalities and complicated circumstances – lead with grace.
We show grace to one another by accepting each other where we are – not where we want the other person to be. We are confronted by complicated or difficult

behaviors and towards grace. I thank those who hold me accountable and challenge me to be better when I show a lack of grace in my life. That is the log in my eye. I know I can do better. I hope we can all do better. So, at the next gathering of brothers that you might attend, seek to be gracious. Even if that gathering leads to a controversial topic, if you are not happy with the way you are being treated or if you are confronted with a brother with a wildly different worldview – when in doubt – lead with grace and know that will not steer you down the wrong path.

Welcoming Back Tau
A
ny chapter expansion project inherently includes a series of trials, challenges and lessons. Overcoming these obstacles will ideally result in the establishment of a full-fledged chapter of Zeta Psi. The reactivation of the Tau Chapter at Lafayette College had its fair share of challenges along the way. Thanks to the combined efforts of the local alumni group, international guidance and a working partnership with its school, the Tau Chapter officially returned to its historic chapter house in September 2018. Chirag Nijjer, past president and inaugural member of the reconstituted chapter, reflected upon the early stages of the reactivation process: “ Things kicked off at the beginning of 2017’s academic year. The Tau house was being used as a dorm at the time and I was actually living there as a regular student with no affiliation to Zeta Psi whatsoever. Once word started getting out that Zeta Psi was looking to return to campus, the Director of Greek Life gave me a heads-up that it was something I should look into.” Zeta Psi’s IHQ, along with a dedicated group of Tau elders, started holding informational sessions on campus for interested prospective members. By November, a small group of seven undergraduates had pledged to bring the chapter back to active status. They also decided upon their respective roles in the chapter. Chirag was to chosen to be Phi with Matt Schoenfeld and JD Egan serving as his Alpha Phi and Gamma. As the fall semester

came to a close, the group grew to include ten members, all of whom were initiated into our brotherhood shortly thereafter. Chirag sees the biggest shift of momentum as happening early in the next semester. Zeta Psi’s Iota Omicron Chapter at the University of Oxford was celebrating its tenth anniversary and several brothers from the group at Lafayette expressed interest in traveling to London to attend this landmark event. Unsure of the appropriateness of a group of undergraduates visiting from a still-inactive chapter, Chirag approached elder Phi Larry Berglund about their intentions. “ I asked Larry if he thought our group would be able to attend and he actually ended up offering to have the elder chapter pay for us all to go. So, all of us recentlyinitiated brothers from the Tau Chapter got to visit London to attend this amazing event.” According to Chirag, this gesture from the elder chapter did wonders for the group’s morale: “ Getting to travel to London and attend that event suddenly made everything seem so much more real to us. It instantly became obvious to us that this wasn’t just some group we were joining – but truly a brotherhood for life.” If other groups are looking to start (or restart) a chapter, Chirag emphasizes that they make sure to utilize all of the resources at their disposal. Between the local elder group, the
International Headquarters, campus Greek life offices and other Greeks on campus, there are a variety of perspectives from which a new group can learn. “ I think expansion groups often stress themselves out trying to come up with answers to questions they’re encountering for the first time. Don’t worry about coming up with all of the answers yourself – others already have them.” Overall, groups should have a clear understanding as to why they’re trying to start a chapter in the first place. The Tau chapter was fortunate in that they had an eager group of elders ready and willing to help out with questions such as these whenever they were needed. On campuses where this isn’t possible, the leveraging of other resources is vital: “ Just find one or two elders who are willing to help. If that’s not possible, then develop and maintain a good relationship with the school. Having a strong partnership with Lafayette College has been one of the most long-term rewarding actions that we’ve taken.” Looking forward, the Tau Chapter is excited to further integrate themselves into the campus community. Now that they have successfully laid the groundwork for a strong chapter, they are looking to add additional philanthropic and community initiatives to their chapter repertoire.

Expansion Updates “ The 2018-2019 academic year was a tremendous success for Zeta Psi’s expansion program! In total, Zeta Psi reactivated chapters at Syracuse, Rutgers, Tufts, UC Berkeley and Lafayette College. In addition to bringing back some of our most cherished historical chapters, Zeta Psi is extremely excited to welcome the Psi Omicron Chapter at the University of Paris into The Circle.” GAMMA – SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY:
The Gamma Chapter had been inactive since 2007. In October a Launchpoint consultant, Dan Faill, came to Syracuse. Over the past seven months, we have grown to 26 brothers and we were initiated at the Tau Chapter at Lafayette on April 6th. Refounding the Gamma chapter has presented many obstacles that we have had to overcome. Our most noticeable growth has been in the strength of our brotherhood. It was not easy, as we were focused on reactivating the brotherhood if we wanted to become a fraternity. We have held many events throughout both semesters in order to get to know one and other better. Another obstacle we faced was participating in formal rush without a house. We had genuine conversations with the freshman and gained many members in the weeks following. Additionally, we held several recruitment events in order to find men that we believe will contribute to the growth of the Gamma chapter. Finally, we will be participating in one philanthropy event before the year is out; going to a local dog shelter and caring for the animals . Fall 2019 starts the official beginning of the revival of the Gamma chapter, and we are looking forward to building out our vision. With access to our house at 727 Comstock Avenue, we look forward to bringing forth our potential to make Greek life at Syracuse University and life in the City of Syracuse better for all.
DELTA – RUTGERS UNIVERSITY:
As of this moment, the new initiates of the Delta chapter are working towards reaching chapter status at Rutgers University. The founding group of 18 were recently initiated with the help of our Alumni association and the Kappa Phi chapter at Cooper Union. We can’t thank them enough and we appreciate them for giving us a warm welcome into our brotherhood. Considering that we are the first class in this new beginning for our chapter, we’ve been planning recruitment events for the end of this semester as well as the following one. We are currently working on relations with other Greek organizations and getting a head start on recruitment for next semester. Our brotherhood is as strong as ever, incorporating different events as we get to know each other. I can happily say that we have become a tightly-knit group and are ready for what is in store for us. We have all been working very hard with recruitment and participating in events such as the RUDM (Rutgers University Dance Marathon) to raise money for the Embrace Kids Foundation. We’re also excited to be living in our historic chapter house next year, making sure that it is given the respect it deserves. Although we have just started, I have no doubt in my mind that we will grow exponentially between each following semester. It is so rewarding to watch the brotherhood build stronger and stronger especially seeing it grow from basically nothing.
TAU – LAFAYETTE COLLEGE:
The experiences of our three founders on that mystical night in 1847 is, unfortunately, one we brothers will never have the privilege of sharing. Yet, the eternal bond formed that day is something that all brothers in Zeta Psi do have the honor of sharing. If one thing is clear, it is that all brothers in Zeta Psi carry with them a certain quality – it is as clear as the punctum of a photograph and is a quality that we all have and stems from the values we Zetes strive to live by. The banquet for the Tau chapter at Lafayette College on March 29th might have well have taken place at a boutique in Grasse, for that very sense of fraternity swept through the entire Marquis Dining Hall. The night was grand as brothers from around the world and many different chapters (along with with their families and Lafayette College officials) came to Easton, PA for the celebration of our historic chapter’s reinstatement. This was a true fulfillment of Brother Comstock’s vision and this night could not have been such a success without all oft those who attended and helped to set up the banquet. The Tau chapter actives would like to particularly thank Brothers Lauck Walton and Larry Berglund for their efforts in making this event a reality. Additionally, we would like to thank President Alison Byerly of Lafayette College for hosting us. Above all else, this event could not have been so spectacular without each and every brother in Zeta Psi who make our fraternity so special.
IOTA – UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY:
As the Iota chapter approaches its 150th anniversary, its members are becoming increasingly motivated towards becoming a chapter that wholly represents the value that Zeta Psi can provide for our student body, university, alumni and international community. In the last year our Phi, Finn Meagher, created a strong precedent for the upcoming anniversary with tremendous progress in national participation, alumni involvement and community contribution. This precedent brought forth a sense of pride in our chapter. This will prove to be critical in not only a historical time for the Iota chapter, but in a volatile time for Greek life in general. In the upcoming months, our brothers will become involved in a series of workshops and philanthropy fundraisers by working in conjunction with Kappa Kappa Gamma and the One Love Foundation. This will educate our members and we will ultimately utilize our voice to educate the public about the prevalent issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault in college life.

A Night in the Life of a Cycle Tourist Last year, two friends (Ed Hill, also an Iota Omicron Zete, and Ralph Weir) and I set off on an expedition to bicycle from Cairo to Cape Town. We had planned the trip during our final year at Oxford and had spent most of our final examination season dreaming about how it might unfold. However, nothing could have prepared us for the 7,000 mile trip that we would undertake over six months through ten African countries from the top to the bottom of the continent. It was certainly the trip of a lifetime and taught us much about resilience, forward planning (!) and the kindness of strangers.

ith a limited budget, our expectations of hotel amenities had to be lowered a little. Before long, we viewed a shack with a long drop toilet (also known as an outhouse) and a bucket shower as if it were a bathroom at the The Ritz. If it had running water, hallelujah! A plug socket hanging on a loose wire from the ceiling? Praise be! Such establishments sometimes came with complimentary
bed bugs and the nighttime excitement of trying not to lose your head torch (also known as a headlamp) down the long drop toilet when nature calls in the middle of the night. Petty trip advisor criticism aside, those hotels were ideal for what we needed: a (clean-ish) bed, a door between us and the town outside, and maybe a bucket of water to rinse off days of grime with. Sometimes there was no room at the proverbial inn – or there was no actual inn – and as our expectations of what we wanted out of a place to sleep in minimized, we ended up staying in some unlikely places. Here are a few: Egypt We were closely monitored by a firm but friendly police escort, who tail all cyclists that dare to travel around the country.

The boys in blue with AK47s forbade us from camping as they were concerned for our safety without explicitly stating what the cause for concern was. Despite that, we managed to spend one night camping in a wind farm (not a subtle reference to Ralph’s tent) and another behind a gas station (not a subtle a reference to Ed’s tent). Sudan The Sudanese police take a much more laissez-faire approach. They have lots of desert and not many tourists, so they let us go where we wished. With free rein to camp in the Sahara, we spent most nights under the stars trying to remember constellations. With no light pollution (unlike in London) the stars were incredibly bright and it was only a few minutes before we spotted a shooting star and made a wish (for the provision of food supplies more exciting than spaghetti, shredded tuna meat and canned tomato paste). We also stayed with a number of Sudanese families, who taught us the meaning of Sudanese hospitality (several litres of Sudanese tea and great company). Mr. Mohadin (center, below) was a prodigious sugar-and-milker of repeated glasses of tea. One memorable night we stayed with a sheikh on the banks of the Nile. He took great delight in telling us how superior British goods were to Chinese, shouted “Land Rover!!” a couple of times into the night sky and woke us up at 5 am to
Ethiopia Bartering for beds. On arriving in an Ethiopian town at the end of the day, the first thing to do was to ascertain where the cheapest hotel was – usually behind a bright-red Coca-Cola sign advertising a bar. In the courtyard a conversation would inevitably take place right before we managed to fit ourselves and our bikes into one of the poky (uncomfortable and cramped) rooms. The dealmaking began. “We would like one room, please.” “But there are three of you!” “Can we all stay in one room?” “No.” “But there’s a double bed and one of us will sleep on our camp bed on the floor.” (Much confusion ensues at my attempt to mime a camp bed.) “It is illegal to have more than one person stay in a room in Ethiopia!” “No it’s not. It wasn’t in the last hotel in the last town!” “One person to one room!” “But what about couples?” “Okay, but you must pay double price!”
“But we’re only getting one room!!” Consternation would be etched onto the hotel manager’s face as he wondered how he could get more money out of these three argumentative and grubby ferenjis. At this point they usually saw our determination plus how badly we needed a wash. After an extensive back-and-forth we would cram into the room, having parted with our money. On one occasion in the Ethiopian highlands, we camped next to a farmhouse and 20 children arrived, perplexed by what we were doing there. They helped us put up our tents, taught us some Amhara dance moves and then played noughts and crosses with us. When we woke up the next morning, we found out that the farmer had stayed outside all night watching over our bikes. He was wrapped in a thick sheep’s fleece and chanting Ethiopian Orthodox prayers – a humbling moment. Kenya Our first night in Kenya was surprisingly spent at a police station, and was not due to how criminally we all smelled. At the checkpoint on the road, a certain Sgt. Kiplagat had invited us to spend the night in the police barracks. We were lent the beds of soldiers out on night duty and treated to Kenyan-style spaghetti at Chez Kiplagat. The following evening, as we slogged up a particularly steep hill, the heavens opened.

We certainly learned one thing from our time in that school – Malawians love to party. Zambia Fences. On entering a country with tighter controls on private land, camping became significantly more difficult. Barbed wire topped these barriers and the threat of roaming game rather unnerved us. Cycling south of Lusaka at the end of the day, we found ourselves hemmed in on either side by such fences. An easy night’s sleep would not be possible if we camped within meters of the busy road. We plowed on as the sun set, until, to our right, a gate appeared in the never-ending fence.
We decided that any more cycling would be folly and rushed to pitch our tents. The real folly, however, was where we put our tents – on the slope of a hill. We had forgotten that water obeys the law of gravity. As we sat snugly in our tents, water began to pool beneath, which then turned into a torrent. In a manner oddly reminiscent of the UK property show “Location, Location, Location” we ran around outside semi-naked as we tried to find higher ground. Tanzania Asking locals where to stay invariably leads to more interesting places than hotels. A few days later, we were struggling up a hill not far from the Malawian border as dusk fell. Cycling through a tiny village, we asked a policeman if there was anywhere to stay. “Not for another 20 km,” he replied. It was clear that we were not going to find a place before nightfall. Glancing up, I spotted a church perched on a nearby hill. Five minutes later I had scrambled up to said church, just as the congregation was leaving. An elderly man, Emmanuel, came over. I asked if we could pitch our tents in the churchyard. “Of course,” said Emmanuel. Only as we pitched our tents did we realize that our arrival in town was akin to the arrival of the circus for the village’s kids. They stuck their heads through the tents’ windows and tried to clamber in. My camp bed soon became a trampoline and even Emmanuel himself lay down on it as he chuckled to himself. After a game of football

(with a ball made of many plastic bags tied together), the village bade us goodnight and we settled into our tents for a long slumber. Malawi The ‘warm heart of Africa’ really lived up to its name. On our first night, we stopped in a town just south of the border and hoped to find a place to stay. The only other outsiders in town were Chinese construction workers. It quickly became clear that there was nowhere to stay and it looked like we’d have to camp along the busy road. However, upon realizing that there was a school nearby, I went to investigate. I found a huge complex of empty breeze-block classrooms. A friendly student led me to the headmaster’s bungalow. I waited outside, unsure of what to expect. Before long, the door opened and the headmaster appeared. At first he was was a little confused why a ‘mzungu’ (foreigner) had turned up on his doorstep, but after explaining our situation, he said, “why, of course you can stay,” and clasped my hand warmly. Before long, we were in one of the breeze-block classrooms and bedded down beneath an ancient chalkboard. What we hadn’t expected was that the whole town would have a party all night – a party to end all parties…and this party was happening right next to the school. Thumping tunes rang through the night air and the floor of the classroom we were sleeping on, as did the excited shrieks of the town’s kids who were surprised by the sudden apparition of some mzungus in their classroom. Unsurprisingly, we didn’t get much sleep.
This turned out to be a chicken farm and we asked the guard if we could camp inside. We waited in the dying light as he went to fetch the farm ‘manager.’ We didn’t expect a guy our age in rugby shorts who had studied in Reading, but that was what we got. “ You guys want somewhere to stay? Got plenty of room in my bachelor pad.” The rest of the evening was spent in Ryan’s family-sized house watching the World Cup, cooking spaghetti bolognese and discussing what it was like to manage a chicken farm in rural Zambia at our age. Botswana Camping in the UK is often limited to a cushy campsite with showers, WiFi and a self-catering kitchen. In Botswana, as we lit our fire in the bush to ward off wild animals, we wistfully thought of that style of camping. We had spent the day trying to dodge elephants on and off the road through Chobe National Park and were fully expecting more to appear during the night. To make matters more even more problematic, Ed found a large hole near our campsite that we believed to be the home of a honey badger or maybe an underground-dwelling lion (we were thinking rationally, as you can see). Pitching our tents in triangle formation, we fortified our camp with branches and my shoes (smelly enough to scare off anything living). As we cooked dinner, a nearby bush rustled and a bull elephant lumbered into view. We froze, sensing the hour of our fate. The bull advanced till he was ten meters away, his heavy breathing reverberating around the camp. At the last moment, the

fire crackled and he halted, paused and then disappeared into the bush. Our interaction with these mighty animals was not over, however; throughout the night they wandered close to our camp, their deep bellowing and the crunch of branches under their feet sending shivers down our spines. We lay dead still in our tents, praying that an elephant foot wouldn’t stomp down through our feeble nylon shelters. South Africa In the most developed of the countries we visited, camping was again difficult due to the primacy of private land in the country. In Northern Cape, we pushed our bikes through tunnels and behind rocks to get away from the road. Barbed wire again proved a snag. Lifting bikes over fences felt a bit like crossing a minefield. On the penultimate day of the trip, we found ourselves with the sun setting on a dirt track deep in the farmland of Western Cape. We spied a farm ahead and asked if we could camp
in their grounds. “This is a chicken farm and if you stay here you might get bird flu,” we were told by the fellow at the gate, “but Michael, the farmer down that track, might be able to help you out.” With the last of the sun illuminating the fields of rooibos, we cycled away from the road along a sandy track. Upon reaching the farm, we stumbled into the man we presumed to be Michael, who asked cheerily if we wanted somewhere to stay. Bowled over by his generosity, we accepted, and before long he and his wife, Annelle, cooked us the largest T-bone steaks we had ever seen and offered us delicious local wine. Over dinner, we discussed with Michael and his 84-year old friend Dirk how they felt South Africa had progressed and faltered since the establishment of democracy in 1994. In South Africa, more so than any other country in Africa we have visited, politics lies just below the surface. Speaking to figures from the rainbow nation’s many ethnic groups has opened my eyes to a country that is still coming to terms with its racist past and forging a way through a
troubled present. Everywhere A nice part of itinerant travel by bike was learning that finding a place to stay in Africa doesn’t require lastminute.com, but more often, a friendly conversation. People helped us and welcomed us up and down the continent. All we needed was a patch of grass to put up some tents. We often got much more out of the kindness of people’s hearts and homes. I hope this has given you a sense of a night in the life of a cycle tourist in Africa. One thing’s for sure – we will never again complain of the odd noise in the night in the UK! Membership Criteria Zeta Psi Board of Delegates Clarifies Membership Criteria.
M
ajor questions regarding Zeta Psi are answered by the Board of Delegates at Zeta Psi’s Annual Grand Chapter Meeting. Every active and elder chapter gets one vote to represent its interests. This past summer, brothers got a first-hand look at how this process works.
Nearly a year before Zeta Psi’s 171st Convention in Ithaca, NY, a question was raised about Zeta Psi’s Constitution and Bylaws. At this time, Zeta Psi’s official Bylaws stated that membership is restricted to “men who have attained satisfactory academic achievement, displayed honorable character traits, and who have been involved in college or community activities.” The term “men” had not been formally defined in Zeta Psi’s official documents. During the months leading up to the Convention, many discussions ensued.

Brothers discussed the issue and debated the pros and cons of the various proposed solutions to this question. Some of that discussion was in our ZeteConnect Facebook group – and not all of it was pretty. An online discussion forum was created in order to help foster communication and brothers were encouraged to weigh in on the upcoming vote with their own thoughts. These deliberations eventually culminated in a seven hour Grand Chapter Meeting – the longest in living memory. Throughout this meeting, delegates presented their opinions before those in attendance. After final arguments were heard, the Grand Chapter vote on seven different versions of possible language commenced. Ultimately, the Grand Chapter’s board of delegates voted to reaffirm each chapter’s autonomy and the ability to select its own membership as long as a candidate fits within Zeta Psi’s eligibility criteria. The updated excerpt of Zeta Psi’s Constitution, as decided by the Grand Chapter in August 2018, now reads:
“Membership shall be limited to males; and regardless of eligibility otherwise, no one who is a member of any other social college fraternity shall be eligible for membership. The term ‘males’ is defined according to the discretion of the active chapter to which an individual has petitioned for membership.” The delegates in the room that day carried on a vigorous and healthy debate. Despite the contentiousness of the matter, the debate was always civil. Though the question of membership eligibility was contentious for many, the brothers in the room put their differences aside and fully engaged. By the end of the meeting, an overwhelming supermajority of delegates agreed to pass the approved language. It is far more than some wanted and far less than others desired – but it reaffirmed that our active chapters get to decide which men get bids and which don’t without interference from Zeta Psi’s Grand Chapter.

You can even experience history just by walking through our streets! Baltimore’s independent artists have developed a strong following in recent years – with public wall art murals and tours throughout the city which explore some of the most unique street-art displays you’ll ever see. The city has also made a strong name for itself in the brewery, distillery and winery industries. With the establishment of over 25 breweries, distilleries and wineries across the city over the past decade, Baltimore rivals some of the best cities in the west. Distillery tours are prevalent

throughout Baltimore and you can visit some of the most ones notable, including Union Craft Brewing, Key Brewing, Monument City Brewing, Diamondback Brewery, Suspended Brewing and others. Additionally, Sagamore Distillery recently opened its doors and does a $15 tour and tasting every hour. It is well worth the visit! To top it off, Guinness recently opened the doors to its US-based headquarters right here in Baltimore – and produces the world’s supply of Guinness Blonde while also pouring its extensive list of beers. If you’re a history buff, you know that Baltimore has a significant place in the our country’s history. Not only was it a major battleground area, but it also marks the origins of the U.S. National Anthem. You can visit Fort McHenry, Federal Hill, Patterson Park, the U.S.S. Constellation and the S.S. John Brown – a WWII Naval Ship that is docked in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Additionally, you can visit Edgar Allan Poe’s grave and his final watering hole, which is The Horse You Came In On Saloon in Fells Point, Baltimore. There are also tons of family-friendly activities. The National Aquarium in Baltimore is one of the nation’s largest and is positioned right in the heart of Baltimore’s inner harbor. You can also visit Port Discovery and the Baltimore Science Center for a hands-on, educational experience for parents and kids of all ages. A short drive or cab ride up I-83 will take you to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore for an even more fulfilling experience!
