“We have been associated with the BE/ME program since its inception and have actively used the program as our primary means of recruiting graduate process engineers into the business. Without exception the students who have been placed at QAL have been very talented and from day one have been able to contribute value to the projects they are assigned. They provide a resource that is out of the daily firefighting world of operations, allowing longer term projects to be worked on that have consistently delivered value far and above the resource commitment required to manage the students. The students come armed with a wealth of knowledge that they enthusiastically apply to the real world situations that are faced within the workplace. The students are a real spark of energy on-site that is a pleasure to be around. QAL continues to be very proud to be associated with this program and the ongoing collaboration opportunities that derives with UQ as a result. Tom Connor, Production Analyst, Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL)

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/ Master of Engineering (BE(Hons)/ME) Placement Program GUIDE FOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS 2016
The 21st century engineer is now someone with a truly global outlook who addresses increasingly complex and interdisciplinary challenges. The one known constant in the world – and in the engineering profession – is change. UQ’s response is to deliver the new five-year integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering (BE (Hons)/ME) program. The program provides UQ students with greater specialisation opportunities and produces graduates who are agile and globally competitive. The defining activity in the BE (Hons)/ME program is a placement with industry or a research institution. Industry placements are an outstanding opportunity for you to engage with our best and brightest students on real and immediate challenges facing your company. The program is managed by an Industry Placements Coordinator, maximising outcomes and benefits to students and program partners. Our students are already world-class. In setting this new standard in Australian engineering education, we are excited about the opportunities that will be opened up to a new generation of young engineers and the industries they will go on to be a part of and lead. More information on the program can be found here: www.eait.uq.edu.au/be-me
What is the BE (Hons)/ME Industry Placement Program? Only the most outstanding undergraduate engineering students, who have a cumulative GPA of 5 (from a maximum of 7) or above, are eligible to enrol in the BE (Hons)/ME Program. The industry placement takes place during either second semester of the 4th year, or the first semester of the 5th year. As a BE (Hons)/ME program partner, you are offered the following: • Involvement in the student selection process • A high-achieving engineering student placed in your company full time for 12 to 24 weeks • An opportunity to utilise high-performing student engineers on real and immediate issues facing your company – at a fraction of the cost of a graduate engineer • An opportunity to identify student engineers to build your pipeline of talent • Continual placement collaboration with a UQ Industry Placement Coordinator • A UQ based academic supervisor supporting the student throughout the placement
How does the BE (Hons)/ME Program work? At the end of their third year, students with a GPA of 5 and above choose whether they wish to join the five-year BE (Hons)/ME program or remain in, and graduate from the traditional four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program. Students who join the BE (Hons)/ME program, undertake a placement in industry or conduct a research project with a university or research institution, either in Australia or overseas. Students are required to produce a report as part of their placement. We also work closely with our industry partners to define the scope of the placement. We provide our industry partners with the opportunity to interview students to ensure “best-fit” for them and for your company. After the student returns to UQ from their industry placement, they complete their final fifth year, which includes advanced courses and project work. The student then graduates from UQ with an integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering.
Key dates Our BE (Hons)/ME placement program is offered in both semester 1 and semester 2 and placements may be undertaken at any time between the dates outlined below:
Nathan Crepin BE (Hons)/ME 2016 cohort “The BE/ME program offered a really attractive opportunity to get out of the lab or lecture theatre and put my skills and knowledge to the test. I was anxious to get some hands-on experience, and my placement far exceeded my expectations. One of the most exciting aspects of my time at Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) was being granted access to the airfield at Brisbane Airport. This allowed me to walk around the terminal aprons amongst all of the parked aeroplanes, which included the enormous Airbus A380. These opportunities have not only helped me expand my technical knowledge and communication skills, but have been a catalyst for my professional and personal development. I have embraced with enthusiasm a personal responsibility to deliver the best results for BAC while always looking for opportunities to improve my professional skills and networking. The confidence that I have inherited through this responsibility has absolutely had a positive impact on both my professional and personal life, and will be one of my defining characteristics when applying for positions in the future.” Nathan Crepin undertook his placement at Brisbane Airport Corporation in 2015
