What has been your career highlight to date? Well other than shooting the cover for urban coco issue 1? It’s difficult to say, I have shot so much in the last year alone. My favourite piece of work I have produced was for Laura Baker’s ‘Twisted Heritage’ line. There was one shot in particular that brought everything together, the art direction and editing
If you could work with any celebrity, who would it be and why? This is a tough one. Erm... maybe Leigh Francis, the creator of Bo Selector and more recently Keith Lemon. You could shoot everyone from Michael Jackson to Craig David to Mel B, all in one day. Well a version of them anyway. What would be your advice for aspiring photographers? First thing’s first you need to be confident with what you are doing. You need to learn your pocket full of lighting tricks that can be brought
Simon Paterson from Lara Ostertag, the hair by Carla Gittins and the subtle yet beautiful makeup by Kat Whimpanny obviously not forgetting our amazing model Olivier Lamb. The shot hangs on my wall as something to outdo with every other shoot that I work on. (sorry for the name dropping) Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? I’d like to be in Leeds still. It’s such a great city to live in, it’s big enough to enjoy variation without the cold anonymity that London seems to offer so many creative hopefuls. I’m working on an exhibition, called “Good Night Yeah?” at the moment which I intend to grow, tour and turn into a book. It is an “anti-social” documentary piece about people who aren’t enjoying their nights out. It’s about social pressure in young society to go out because “the club is where you have the most fun”. In fact it can be quite a daunting place full of strangers some of whom on drugs and out of control, it’s a place where tempers can flare due to excessive alcohol consumption, it’s a place where predatory boys hunt down girls in an attempt to have their wicked way with them, it’s a place full of paranoia, self consciousness and a lack of self awareness. www.goodnightyeah.wordpress.com So in five years time I suppose I’d like to be still working in fashion and working towards my second photo book.
out if a shoot isn’t going the way you planned it, it’s all about problem solving. Second tell everyone you know or meet that you are a photographer, the only way you are going to get work is if people know you exist. Last never turn down a job, you never know if it’ll lead onto another one. Even if you think you’re a portrait photographer and someone wants you to shoot some flowers do it. It’s all about constantly building your portfolio and gaining a much experience as possible. Every day’s a school day! Who or what inspires you? I would like to list some photographers, but I fall in love with someone new every month. Rankin, Guy Bourdin, Mario Testino are obvious choices, but I’d like to make a big point about Lara Ostertag. She is the one who drags me out of the mud when I think things aren’t going so well. Working with her over the last year or so has helped us both grow enormously, both in business and creatively. We have big plans for the future and as long as we keep going the way we are I see no reason why we can’t achieve them. www.simonpatersonphotography.wordpress.com www.goodnightyeah.wordpress.com Website on it’s way www.simonpatersonphotography.com

am a total Magpie, anything shiny and sparkly and I’m all over it. So when my attention was drawn to shoe designer, Jeffery Campbell, I knew that was the start of a new obsession. Jeffery Campbell is the fastest moving brand in footwear that everyone is talking about. The meteoric rise of the Jeffrey Campbell brand in the last 10 years is nothing short of amazing, it is currently available in 49 countries and rising. Jeffrey’s Inspiration and Design ideas come from everywhere, from vintage shops to astronomy! Spring 2012 finds Jeffrey Campbell looking back to the future. Revisiting 1960s romanticism and mixing it up with the sharper edges of modernity. Jeffrey Campbell uncovers a world of glamour and fashion where retro mod meets ultra modernist. Hints of vinyl, crochet, spikes, metallics, wooden heels or no heels at all Jeffrey Campbell is at the forefront of what’s next, the cornerstone of now and nostalgia. Truly turning the page on the next chapter of style! Here are just a few of my favourite designs. www.jeffreycampbellshoes.com

Made by Hand A s this is our Shoe issue, we have been searching high and low for shoe related items that we think need to be shouted about, after all, women LOVE shoes! So when we came across madebyhandonline.com, an exciting new website devoted to promoting and selling contemporary craft from British and Irish designer-makers, we couldn’t wait to tell you about it. Friends Katie Honnor and Sarah James are passionate about contemporary craft, clocking up 20 years in-depth knowledge of the craft sector. They launched madebyhandonline in December 2010 with a handpicked collection of fashion accessories, jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture and more! One of the makers on their site is Jennifer Collier who creates handmade shoes...made from paper! We had a chat with Jen to find out more Your shoes are amazing! How did you first get in to creating these? I originally trained in textiles completing a BA (hons) Textiles, at Manchester Metropolitan University, in 1999. This was a traditional textiles course specialising in Print, Knit and Weave. Toward the end of the course I started experimenting with different materials, weaving with orange peel, melting fruit bags; all manner of things my tutors did not approve of. My practice now focuses on creating work from paper; by bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching I produce unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are used to explore
www. urban-coco. com
How long does it take you to create a pair? All the shoes are created using different techniques, some are hand stitched, some are machine stitched others formed over a mould, or created using paper templates I have devised, so they all take differing amounts of time. And obviously the more times you makes something the quicker you get. The hardest (and slowest) part is coming up with a design that works in the first place. I honestly believe the best way to learn is by not being afraid to make mistakes, this way you allow
the ‘remaking’ of objects. The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. The papers themselves serve as both the inspiration and the media for my work, with the narrative of the books and papers suggesting the forms. I tend to find papers, by scouring charity shops and flea markets, then investigate a way in which they can be reused and transformed; giving new life to things that would otherwise go unloved or be thrown away. Tell me more about the bespoke service you offer? The shoe can be made out of almost any type of papers, so quite often customers will send me things such as wedding stationary, theatre programmes, wallpaper etc so they can be made from their own papers. Or very often it is a map of a certain place; I keep a big range of maps in stock so I can fulfil the order as quickly as possible. Shoes made to
yourself to have happy accidents. All of the techniques I use in my work now are things I have taught myself since graduating by experimenting with different media and techniques. Probably more than half of my work never sees the light of day, but through the other half I have discovered something truly unique. It got to the stage where books and papers were my main inspiration, so it just made sense for them to become the media for the work too. I enjoy nothing more than finding a cook book splattered with food stains or a water damaged paperback that I can save from land fill and transform into something beautiful. Where are these available from? I exhibit throughout the country (visit my website at www.jennifercollier. co.uk for a list of exhibitions), and also sell through my own gallery Unit Twelve (www.unittwelve.co.uk), but the best place to see a full range and simply click to buy is via www.madebyhandonline.com What has been your most popular design to date? The stilettos are always the most popular, I think because there are an iconic shoe shape, and I am sure every girl has several pairs of ‘nonfunctional’ shoes in their wardrobeI know I have lots (well, they are inspiration.....)

an you imagine having the legend that is Jimmy Choo as your Uncle? Well Lucy Choi doesn’t have to imagine. As the niece of one of the most recognised shoe designers in the world, Lucy is following in her Uncles footsteps. Interview
Making footsteps in the fashion industry Can you tell us a bit about your background, before shoe designing what were you doing? My first ever job was working for a large IT corporation as a financial business analyst then as an account director looking after clients such as the London Stock Exchange. I decided to start my career working in a big corporation to understand the business world and all aspects of business. Fashion and footwear is part of my family heritage and I knew this ultimately would be my future but wanted to cut my teeth in the corporate world first. In 2002 I joined leading luxury footwear brand to help them to build the brand and grow the company both in the UK and internationally. I became the MD and oversaw every aspect of the business including the retail, wholesale business plus overseeing the marketing and PR. After 10 wonderful years I left last year to pursue a new path in fashion consultancy. Thanks to my connections in the shoe industry therefore, I was very lucky, and able to start my own brand. Being related to the legend that is Jimmy Choo, do you find your designs are constantly compared to his? My Uncle has been very supportive of me launching my own label, but no, our designs are not often compared as we have a different ethos behind our brands. I see Lucy Choi London as a boutique label specialising in affordable luxury. The similarities between us are that we both strive to produce shoes of exceptional design, quality and craftsmanship. What is a general day like as a shoe designer? Busy! It varies from one day to the next. One day I could be doing a shoot for the look book or be out with my buying team meeting with buyers and new stockists. I do everything from trend forecasting to budget forecasting. I also liaise daily with my PR team and regularly meet the press. Other days I could be needed in Hong Kong or Italy to see my factories where I oversee everything from the designs, to the fabrics to the fittings. I try on and wear each pair of shoes in the collection myself to ensure they are comfortable
www. urban-coco. com
and meet my high standards before they are produced. No day is ever the same, which is why I enjoy what I do. What inspires your designs? I take my inspiration from my travels around the world. I’m also inspired by women of all ages from how they dress and put a look together. Where are your shoes available? They are available from Daniel Footwear boutiques around the UK and online at www.lucychoilondon.com To all aspiring designers, what advice would you give them? To work hard, be totally dedicated, tenacious and to live your dream! I also believe that whatever you promise, you must deliver and be true to yourself. To date, what has been your career highlight? When the first collection arrived it was a very emotional moment, seeing my dreams finally become reality! If any celebrity could wear your shoes, who would it be and why? Alexa Chung, because she her own identity and quirky signature look. In 3 words, how would you describe your designs? Luxurious, affordable, comfortable In 2012, what can we expect from you? More fabulous shoes! The AW12 collection will launch in the summer and I’ve already completed the SS13 collection. We are now preparing for AW13 and we will also be looking for more high end boutiques and department stores in the UK and internationally. www.lucychoilondon.com

My Favourite Pair of Shoes
My Favourite Pair of Shoes
My Favourite Pair of Shoes
I remember a pair of flat dolly shoes with polka dot linings which in my memory I wasn’t allowed to wear until my birthday. When I did they were too tight but I wore them anyway. I also had a pair of brown leather shoes with yellow and brown laces that I always referred to as bumble bee laces. I hated them, but now when I look back on them I quite like them. Freda, 26 My first special footwear purchase was a pair of knee high black leather boots from faith in York. I was 18 and I spotted them in the window, I went back at least 4 times that day to look at them before buying them. They cost me £140 which is more than double the amount I have ever paid for shoes! They were sky high skinny stiletto heels, (one of which happened to snap the 2nd time I wore them), a real sharp pointed toe and studs down each outer side. LUSH booties! But the most uncomfortable things I have ever come across, still have a home in my wardrobe - although I’ve not worn them in years (gave up after the 5th heel repair!) But I could never throw them out. Kylie, 23
out of the leather. I was really excited when I was bought my first pair of ‘grown up’ shoes. They were black slip on’s with a thick leather black bow that reminded me of Minnie Mouse ears. They had a heel that nowadays are called kitten heels but back then were called lavatory heels as they looked the same shape as the base of a toilet if you can believe it! I always thought it was a horrible a name. I felt so grown up as they were the first pair I bought knowing my size, rather than being measured in the children’s department at Clarks. I wore them to a school disco aged 14. Jan, 60 I was always a masculine child. I was also a twin and we were differentiated by colour. I was blue, with a generally considered male name and cropped hair. I remember being about 7 and getting a pair of red suede flats with a black sole and a tapestry ribbon bow. They made me feel so grown up and feminine. I was so excited. I get that same feeling now when I get a new pair of shoes, though I must admit they are slightly more elaborate now! Dale, 26

here’s something about a brand new pair of shoes that makes us all feel amazing. From getting them home, opening the box and neatly placing the new shoes on the floor to admire them before lovingly slipping your feet inside. We met up with some fierce females to find out about their favourite pair of shoes of all time. The first pair of shoes that meant something to me were hand-me-downs from a family friend and weren’t exactly in the best condition. They were plastic barbie kitten-heeled shoes with sparkles. Click-clacking around the garage in them I remember feeling like a princess - because I now owned the shoes that all the other little girls were wearing, I was finally one of the gang! It didn’t matter that they weren’t new; it was the way they made me feel that resonates with me to this day. Jen, 24 When I was 9 I was given some red boots for Christmas from my Aunty. I loved them so much I wore them for two weeks solid and even slept in them Christmas day night. I especially loved dancing in them in the lounge with my sister as I thought I was really grown up, and my Sister was really jealous as they were ‘big girl grown up shoes’. Natalie 28 I always wanted a pair of the plastic high heels that looked like grown up shoes. I was never allowed them. The first ones I remember getting were from Clarks, a pair of sandals with Daisy’s punched

My mum bought me this gorgeous pair when I was 6 for a family friend’s christening. They were baby pink satin Mary-Janes with a little heel. They were the first pair of “big girl” shoes I got and I wouldn’t take them off, I was obsessed with walking on any hard surface in them because I loved the clip-clop noise they made! Amelia, 20 From the age of 13 I was absolutely obsessed with shoes. Every Saturday I would go shopping with my mum who was also a shoe-a-holic I would pick out shoes that when I left school and started earning I said to myself I would buy (all ridiculous now but at the time I thought amazing). I remember leaving school and earning my first wage which was £35 a week and just weeks later I spent two weeks wage on my very own 5 inch black paintent killer heels. I adored these shoes and although I had nowhere to wear them as I was 15 I would just wear them round the house until they gave me huge blisters!! To this day blisters and the fact huge heels hurt your feet does not put me off! Steph, 26 Tweet us and tell us about your favourite shoes #MyFavouriteShoes

et for celestial stardom, 2012 could not look more promising for this 22 year old UK singer-songwriter from Kentish town, North London. Nyomi Gray known as Ny has been buzzing around the UK music scene for the past several years collaborating and working with well-known artists such as Tinchy Stryder, DJ Ironic and Giggs on her fist official single release ‘Be with You’

ith summer just around the corner Ny is set to take the stage on the Plan B tour as his supporting act performing her latest singles and songs off her upcoming album. When asked about her main influences Ny was quick to point out that her mother’s love for reggae music swayed her to grow up listening to Burning Spear, Beres Hammond and Peter Tosh. Also Lauren Hill and Mariah Carey had a great impact on her younger life, from seeing them on TV and listening to their harmonic vocals projected in a mesmerising way, at aged 11 Ny wanted to be just like them. Little did she know she was about to embark on a journey of her own which is by nowhere complete. At the age of 16 Ny was experienced enough to turn her music into a career, she stated “I felt as though I could express myself better through my lyrics and I had a lot to

more sentimentally her friend who was tragically murdered in 2001. Ny said “My friend was a DJ and we made a pact that if we took the music serious we would always help and watch over each other, he was taken before his time, it’s now my responsibility to honour him through my music and hopefully he will be proud”. Ny is often seen with her best friend, X-Factor judge Tulisa and in their spare time away from music enjoy being around each other and catching up. She is very family orientated and even when she’s not recording vocals or performing she still finds time to be around friends who are. “I like to surround myself with music so even when I’m not doing it I’m still a part of it. I often spend time with Ghetts or Jammer and gate crash their sessions so I can still be a part of the vibe”. With performances over the summer in Aiya Napa and Malia and her album launch just around the corner it’s obvious this young women with outstanding potential is set to make her mark this year. With her mum as he co-manager and a great team behind her Ny has already released several mix tapes including split
What would you class as the most successful point in your career so far? There have been many amazing things that have happened in my career so far and I am truly blessed but if I had to choose, I would narrow it down to this. I’ve just come off a three week school tour and it was great. The last day I performed at a death school, I was a bit skeptical at first because I didn’t know how things were going to play out but when I performed they enjoyed it so much. The kids jumped on the stage and started to dance with me and sing along. You could tell they didn’t get the opportunity to see live music often and it was really touching to know even though they couldn’t completely hear the songs, they were just feeling the whole vibe and performance, I feel that’s more than music, it’s something deeply affectionate.
What have you been up to lately apart from music? You know what I don’t do much apart from music, I like to work with a lot of artists and just be around even when people are working on their music. Do you have any hobbies? Yeah I love traveling and going on holiday. Ethiopia is my favorite country it’s a beautiful place and I love the scenery. I also love animals and spend a lot of time with my dog. I’m very close with my little brother as well so I often take him out. We went to clown town the other week which is like an indoor climbing and play area, I couldn’t help but get involved and play with him. I’m really a big kid at heart. You recently went on tour with N Dubz how did that go? It was amazing. It was my first arena tour so it was a very special stage in my career as an artist playing in front of thousands of people. I gained great recognition and a lot of new fans who perhaps had never heard my music before. I loved performing in the arenas especially the O2, it made me want success even
through her veins
www. urban-coco. com
You have your own label “Dream Juice label”? Yeah I do I recently set it up because I can sing and write music, and I would love to help other artists out there who I think would really benefit. There is so much amazing talent out there it just needs to be heard. People send music to me all time and sometimes I don’t get to check them all that’s why I think setting up Dream Juice will help me develop artists who just need a shot at making it big. You’re touring with Plan B in June and July. What songs can fans expect? Fans can expect a few songs from me but I don’t want to give too much away. Il definitely be performing my new single ‘Music’ and a few off my new album.
Do you think the British urban scene could ever compete with the American? It doesn’t need to compete. It quite clear some if not most American artists are heavily influenced by UK music and fashion. We have our own sound and scene and it is recognised worldwide. Even Drake said he is influenced by UK music stating he listens to Wiley and Sneakbo quite a lot. Who would you like to collaborate with if possible? There are so many amazing artists out there at the moment doing their thing and I rate them all highly, but if I had to choose it would firstly be Beres Hammond. Because I have grown up on routes reggae since a very young age he was one of the first to inspire me to start singing. His songs are amazing and I would love to work with him. Secondly I’d love to work with Drake, he’s an amazing writer and he’s what’s hot right now. I met him the other night after his show and he’s a really cool down to earth guy and a great performer. I think finally the artist I would also like to work with is Missy Elliot. She’s a creative genius and all her songs stand out. If we worked together I know we would come up with some Fire! What releases can we expect to see over next few months? My new single ‘Music’ will be released on May 7th and its available on all online stores. Interview by Rydah Straughn

o look at her, Elle Varner looks like an adorable and stunning young girl and it’s quite a shock once she opens her mouth to sing and her soulful tones come flowing out. She was first brought to my attention when she collaborated with the legend that is J Cole on her debut single ‘Only wanna give it to you.’

product and it wouldn’t be the same album without my team as a whole. I am so lucky to have been trusted with not just singing but writing and producing on the album as well
You come from a creative family, with parents both in the music industry. Did this inspire you to follow in their path? Having two parents in the industry definitely helped, but discovering Whitney Houston as a child was a major factor. She was everything to me. I wanted to be her.
Moving forward, you must have so many exciting plans in the pipeline. What are you looking forward to most? Honestly, most looking forward to coming overseas and to the UK! I feel like my vibe and music are such a fit for the decadent music taste of my friends overseas and I cannot wait to share it.
You released your debut single in the states in August last year, what has it been like since then? It blows my mind to experience the steady rise to stardom from my first single and now moving into my second. I went from basically unknown to being stopped by fans on the street not just in NY but in the airport and every city I visit lol....its crazy! In February, you performed for the Roots pre Grammy Jam session and dedicated this to the late Whitney Houston. She clearly had a huge impact on you? Whitney inspired me immensely as I mentioned before... because of her I wanted to be a pop power singer. She always made you feel like she was singing to you right in your living room and for that I loved her dearly. If you had to describe your music in 3 words, what would you say? Fresh, Real and Classic What can we expect from your forthcoming album? I can confidently say without an ounce of arrogance but pure pride that my album is a classic. It is a body of work that I spent so long trying to “perfect” until the day I realised it was “Perfectly Imperfect” and so was I, hence the album title Perfectly Imperfect. I wrote every song on the album and co produced on every song, so not only is my heart and soul in the music but my craft and attention to detail. Pop and Oak (Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay) produced almost the entire album with the exception of an amazing track I did with Shux (Empire State of Mind), so the album has a consistency and fluidity reminiscent of the days when an album had one producer! You can listen to the album and not only get a glimpse of who I am as a person and what I’ve been through, but find how easily identifiable and universal the song concepts are. am once again very proud of my baby. How much input do you have in to your album? I had full creative control on my album but I definitely used the amazing team around me for their input and expertise. My managers Jeff Robinson and Suzette Williams, my dad who co wrote and co produced with me, and Peter Edge my A&R contributed greatly to the final
For other aspiring singers trying to crack the industry, what advice would you give? Always leave a lasting impression!! Be prepared at all times to break out your notes whether your on the Tube or in a studio...you never know who you may meet and when your big break will come. If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be? Adele and Andre 3000 are two of my biggest dream collaborators. Clearly, you’re in to fashion and it seems you aren’t afraid to take risks. Are you a highstreet or designer kind of girl? I dress from a very practical point of view and just try to kick it up a notch. I love to mix high and low fashion like a designer shoe with a vintage piece. My thing is it’s not how much you spend it’s how you rock it. What can we expect from you in 2012? This is definitely my year! I will be dropping my album, debuting overseas, touring, doing some award shows, and I just cannot wait to share my music with the world! The bigger the better? those people) to dropping nearly half a foot when I get home and take myself out of them. They do hurt after a while, and they’re dangerous to wear in some places, for example the metro or a slippery pavement. But because I’m a woman, I power through with bleeding feet and risk breaking my neck with every step I take in the avid hope that a man might notice me molding myself according to his best wishes and marry me and buy me lots of heels.
I
need that attitude sometimes and I will fight the case of high heels until I’m old and my toes are squashed up.
T
he TUC tried to suggest a ban on high heels in workplaces a few years ago. As you can imagine, this drivel didn’t go much further than a ridiculing splash in the Daily Mail and was met with a unanimous, ‘you can have my heels when you prise them off my cold dead feet’ by women all over Britain.
of the curve of a woman. The lick of red that flashes from the underside of Louboutins is tantalising. They make any outfit ‘pop’. Heels can make you strut. They create a nice posture and add an enchanting sway to your walk. And now more than ever, the high heel has it’s role at work. I know men who get nervous just listening to a businesswoman’s court shoes clacking down the hallway. Naturally, people are now questioning this paradox of pain and power. Women have always been mentally at the same level as men but high heels put them physically at the same level, which in workplaces that are still male dominated can be important. Tory MP Nadine Dorries said a few years ago, “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye. If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me.” Like the corset, it is argued that, high heels were a male invention to shape women the way they liked them and ultimately to constrain them and make them suffer. I can’t bear it when this argument occurs and here’s why. I love my high heels. I love how I feel when I’m in A huge problem many people seem to have with high them. I love the whole heel wearing experience from heels is that they are sexy. The arch of the heel is symbolic buying them in the shop and squealing (yes I’m one of

That is, of course, ludicrous. Every day I put high heels on I’m doing it for myself. It makes no odds to me if some bloke leers at me while I’ve got them on. Any man who thinks it’s ok to ogle women would do it with or without the heels. And if he sees a pair of stilettos as an excuse to do so, then I’m afraid he is the one with the problem, not me. High heels can cause damage to your feet so be sensible. When I go on out to the pub or to work I put some ballet shoes in my handbag. If my feet hurt or I’m going to be dashing around I just slip them on. I respect my body and I wouldn’t put myself in danger. A day on heels does hurt but I love them and I know this is probably just me, but it’s my own way of being tough. They remind me of my mother who is a very strong woman with stilettos surgically attached to her feet. or not?
W
hen I think about discussions of women in the workplace I think of equal pay, the limited number of women in the top end of the pay bands and powerful positions, maternity leave...the list goes on. Popular debate falls often onto women, power and fashion It is a complex and interesting cultural minefield that whether we like it or not, is one through which we must all navigate. It would be naive to deny the power and importance of fashion. Fashion is a multi million pound industry; in England events such as London Fashion week make a huge contribution to our economy. Retail is a vital component of fiscal stimulus very much needed in this time of financial crisis. What you wear in the work place and the cultural signifiers your outfit fires at your colleagues, clients or boss is infinite. Most women have the dilemma of ‘what to wear’ to the multitude of work functions. Consider Theresa Mays consistent hounding in the press, the uproar at a hint of cleavage in parliament. God forbid you wear a kitten heel in government, never mind expose your cleavage or the silhouette of your figure and identity yourself as a woman. But what of shoes in all of this? High heels are politically, culturally, sexually loaded objects. Do they make women powerful? Is it ‘appropriate’ to wear heels to work? We have our trusty argument of ‘empowerment’ which is, as ever, far from robust. Most simply, they often make women feel good. Men and women have different cultural dress codes. Smart wear for women is often a suit or dress with heels, for men: a suit and smart leather shoes. Whilst sexuality is a trait imbued upon femininity as desirable, the notion of wealth and financial stability is the malecounterpart. Christian Louboutin once said that “there is an element of seduction within shoes that doesn’t exist for men...a woman can be sexy, charming, witty or shy with her shoes. shoes for men are about elegance or wealth.” Does walking into a board room or the office in heels create an image, or illusion of power or demand the attention of your male counterparts? The sad thing is the assumption we need to demand their attention, and also the assumption that male colleagues are so outrageously idiotic and sexually orientated that if you want them to sit back and be awed by the presentation

that you are delivering, slinking past them in heels is the way to achieve this. What is also interesting in this discussion is that ‘women in the work place’ are those considered ‘high powered’, “The Clackers”(as in the Devil Wears Prada, described by the sounds of their heels in the marble lobby) What about those who are not in such positions? Heels are essentially something that removes power from women. There is a tension between the extended height and the subsequent feelings of confidence, power, and desirability with an underlying fearfulness. At any moment you may fall over, stumble, and twist your ankle. Police made headlines when handing out flip-flops to drunken women on nights out as this was a cheaper alternative to the strains placed on the NHS. For most women wearing heels makes them feel that they have ‘improved posture’. The reality is that it
H
was a must, not even a kitten and certainly not a stiletto. “F*ck me shoes” and “killer heels” these phrases attach an aggression to the objects. Like shoulder pads were considered “power shoulders” in the 80’s. There is and always will be a wave of fashion trends that women utilise to establish a powerful image. Just as we have evolved from shoulders to feet as powerful we have a history of fashion and desirability as a distortion of the real body through restriction and even mutilation. Consider corsets and the Chinese tradition of binding. Ultimately when we break this debate down there are many political and ethical issues for women to negotiate. Women can and should wear what they want when they want. The problem is the interpretation of others. So one must be savvy. I don’t believe wearing heels is ‘empowering’ but I certainly don’t believe they are inappropriate. They can be beautiful and fun and they
igh heels are politically, culturally, sexually loaded objects. Do they make women powerful? Is it ‘appropriate’ to wear heels to work? We have our trusty argument of ‘empowerment’ which is, as ever, far from robust. Most simply, they often make women feel good. creates an unnatural posture: an arched back, your bum pushed out and your breasts pushed up. The feelings of sexiness that heels give women makes them feel good, a woman I know described a new pair of heels as “an orgasm in a box”. This is if you can walk in them. There are few less attractive fashion statements than a woman unable to walk in her own shoes. Maybe just pipped to the post by women wearing only leggings seemingly unaware that the sunlight exposes her bum through the sheer fabric. When it comes to shoes in the workplace the height of the shoes seems to be key. Harrods in London has the strict dress code which includes unembellished heels as compulsory without a doctor’s note. A mid heel
can simply look good. Anyone who is into fashion is into aesthetics and this can be creative and inspiring. I have been trying to think of shoes in relation to true notions of empowerment though, and can think of only one; the act of learning to tie your own shoes as a child. One of the early markers of maturity and a true act of power and independence. By Dale Ellis

Dating disasters
A
t U.C we love to have a laugh with our girls, conversations usually end up being all about men. So we talked to some fearless females that we know to find out their dating disasters, as expected, they ALL want to remain anonymous!
I
went on a date with a really cool older guy and he took me to a restaurant! I was only young and hadn’t ever really been out that much, so I felt really special and grown up. Sooo.... pretty nervous I already had the sh*ts. I ordered my normal chicken Tikka Massala (that’s all I knew back then, maybe a korma if I was feeling extra extravagant) then I ate about half of it and the butterfly’s had turned into me running to the toilet and literally throwing up everything I had eaten, plus my maccy D’s which I had earlier on in the day and I’m sure a whole Mc chicken sarnie came out! Anyways, I sorted myself out sat down and said I wasn’t hungry anymore. So we left the restaurant, sat in the car and I could smell sick, looked down and I had sick all over my shoes and it had splashed up jeans!!!!!!!
‘My
horrendous date was with a beautiful French guy I met in a club. He took me to a very fancy restaurant and we had a lovely dinner and lots of drinks. It was getting to the end of the night when a woman approached our table looking VERY angry. She started shouting at me calling me a ‘Home Wrecker’ and a ‘Whore’ - I had, had a few drinks and thought it was a joke, so I laughed along. Only when I saw his face did it click that this was his wife… very angry wife. Turns out he was not only married but he also had kids (he told me he was single!) I made a quick exit as she shouted abuse for the table - everyone was gawping at me! Very embarrassing! The French man then texted me later apologising and saying ‘It was a pity my wife found out’….what is wrong with men?! Ha!

I
was on a night out and I met a guy who I thought was pretty fit. We had a great time together so much so that I ended up going back to his for a few more drinks. It turned out his house was quite far out and I was literally dying for the toilet! I couldn’t hold it in anymore so it was either piss myself or ask to get out the taxi and do it outside the car for all to see! So I chose to get out the car and piss on the roadside, classy or what! Better out than in though I suppose!
‘I
was on a date with this total hottie I had fancied for ages. We agreed to go for a drink in the evening however when he turned up it became apparent that he had been drinking all day and was absolutely smashed! He could barely walk and was slurring all his words. I decided to grin and bear it (because he was so hot) but 5 mins into the date he fell off his chair, flat on his face. He was so drunk I had to immediately call him a taxi and send him home. Fit, but sh*t!

y name is Clementine Serrell and I’m addicted to shoes. If there was a group for such an addiction I’d be the founder of it! As an ex fashion student and Visual Merchandiser I know that the choices we make when it comes to our outifts reflect a huge amount about us. And in my opinion shoes can give a lot away about a person. Obviously every multiple of you’re chosen outfit is important but when I’m discretely oogling someone’s ‘look’ the shoes make or break. Guys in particular- good face, check…..good preppy outfit, check……bad trainers that even Gary Lineker wouldn’t wear, oh dear! The best thing with fashion at the moment is that you don’t even have to spend a lot to re create certain looks. New Look is one of my favourite shoe hide outs, and Office do every sandle under the sun for a perfect summer look.
Monday
Tuesday Quite a casual look, but I think the New Look boots really make the outfit. Being blond I try not to go OTT with leopard print as I don’t want to rock the ‘Pat Butcher’ look but a little touch can be very effective. The jeans were on sale in Miss Selfridge, and the printed racer back was actually free with magazine, bargain! The scarf is Mulberry and the brooch was made by my great grandfather. I always think it’s nice if jewellery has sentimental value.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these shoes, which are vintage Russell and Bromley, again a bargain from a charity shop at just £25!! They are so feminine and I always think navy and white is a classic combo. The skirt is a simple pencil skirt from Topshop, great for all seasons, and the blouse is from New Look, again a bargain at £7 in the sale. They didn’t have any in my size but I loved the print so bought it 2 sizes too big, knowing I could utilise it.

Wednesday This dress is so useful, great for days when you need to look smart at work, and stylish for socialising after. The necklace is one of my favourites, and is so good for dressing up more plain pieces. The shoes are one of my most used pairs (and I think it’s starting to show!). They are from Jimmy Choo and are just a classic stiletto. Every girl should have a staple black shoe, they don’t need to be expensive just a good shoe. I am a bit in love with ‘toe cleavage’ and these give you a great one, they are also surprisingly comfortable. The bag is Mulberry and again is really useful as it’s big enough for a night away but not too big to use for work.
Thursday
Androgyny is something that keeps swinging back on the fashion pendulum and while my look here isn’t too masculine the Primark brogues add a hint gender-bending. They are also really comfy!! The maxi skirt is from La Redoute, one of my favourite mail order companies, and the scarf is Alexander Mc Queen. The pattern has been copied by a lot of high street stores but I still think it’s quite a timeless piece. The fur gillet is from Mango and is getting on a bit now. When Sienna first started the boho craze I think we all went out and bought one but it always comes in handy. The handbag is vintage and part of a collection my mum has built up over the last few years.
`Friday Another essential for every girl in my mind is a good pair of black pencil trousers, these are from Oasis. The shoes here are my newest purchase and I absolutely love them!! They are from Christian Louboutin and I think they are a classic shoe. When spending a bit more on a good pair of shoes you wonder whether you should go for something really crazy and a bit different but in my opinion they will only date from season to season. I feel great when I wear these (and also about 5inch taller!). The top is from Next and the pearls and handbag were all from an antique auction.

Mojito’s Mojito’s
s ’ o t i j o M I was so excited to be visiting the Radisson Edwardian Manchester because all I have heard about this place is great, great great.
Arriving a little later than planned (thanks Manchester traffic and broken Sat Nav) we were greeted by the friendly concierge who offered to park our car for us, saving us the hassle of trying to find the car park at the back of the hotel. Upon arriving at reception we were immediately made to feel at ease and it felt like we were on a mini holiday. We were shown to our room where we couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes and get refreshed before heading to dinner. We were dining in Opus One, which is one of two restaurants available in the hotel. The surroundings were opulent and dramatic with soaring ceilings, velvet red walls, high gloss black woodwork, antique gold wall coverings and bespoke furniture in black crocodile skin hide and we were seated by the large glassed hotel façade overlooking the bustling streets of the city so we could watch the world go by. Under the direction of head chef Neil Armstrong, Opus One serves innovative modern British food that blends the best of local produce, presented in a modern, contemporary way. Obviously we started by ordering wine, it had been a long day! We opted for one of two Rose wines which were available, Pinot Grigio, which was crisp, light and full of flavour.
Then it was time to decide on what to eat from the extensive menu. We asked the knowledgeable waiter for some input on what to choose and we decided on organic salmon and king prawns which came in a jar with whisky, shallot marinade and avocado puree then my partner chose tastes of wild duck and Foie Gras with mulled orange chutney and walnut bread, as recommended. Before our starters arrived we were treated to a complimentary amuse bouches which teased us, tasted divine and made us even more eager to receive our starters. When they arrived they were impeccably presented, the Salmon starter was a fun dish and all the flavours complimented each other perfectly. My partner said the wild duck was to die for! Moving on to our mains, I am a huge fan of pork so it was easy for me to choose slow cooked pork belly, roasted langoustine and Cheshire gammon pressing with apple. My partner chose lamb loin, soft herb crust, slow cooked shepherds pie, smoked white aubergine caviar. The lamb was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. By this point we were both comfortably stuffed and content but it would have been rude not to have a dessert! We decided to share the Taste of Manchester iced vimto parfait, with Manchester tart, warm Eccles cakes, clotted cream and a Manchester smoothie. One word, WOW! Perfect end to our evening which had been lovely, the atmosphere in the restaurant was animated
and bustling yet romantic and cosy at the same time. Staff were attentive, topping up our wine and water as soon as it needed, but not the point of annoyance. It was a relaxing dining experience which left us keen to return. The rest of our evening was spent in our roomy bedroom watching TV and nibbling on the complimentary fruits which had been left for us. We both slept well in the comfortable bed, enjoyed an extensive full English and continental breakfast before checking out of the hotel. Definitely somewhere we will be returning in the near future.

osmo called them ‘fashion’s IT band’ and their new track was used on Grey’s Anatomy in the US. They have already created a buzz in the states and now they’re doing the same in the UK. They were first brought to my attention when sitting on the front row at high profile shows at London Fashion week earlier this year. I couldn’t wait to find out more... How did you come up with the name, Early Morning Rebel? For fun, we used to sit around and make up band names. Most of them were perverse. When we started this project, we were mulling over our extensive lists, and Early Morning Rebel jumped out at us. Something about it spoke to us.

You all seem like really good friends, how do you know each other? Dustin and I grew up and went to high school together. We played music since we were 15 years old. Jon(bass) and Josh(Drums) were mutual friends in bands around town. They were the perfect addition to EMR. We are close friends, and genuinely enjoy each others company.
Like a collection of songs make up an entire album. They are both forms of expression and art.
For people that haven’t heard your music before, how would you describe your sound in 3 words? We would love to hear your 3 words... You tell us...
To date, what has been your career highlight? Just being capable and able to produce a body of work, and do what what we love.
What can we expect to see from you in 2012? We will be releasing a full length record, touring in the UK and US and Releasing lots of videos. You were recently spotted on the front row at recent shows at London Fashion Week, is fashion something you have a keen interest in? Absolutely. We respect and are inspired by fashion and designers. The process of creating a great line is similar to the process of creating an album. Each look is like a song and together they make up the entire collection.
If you weren’t singing, what else do you think you would be doing? Actor, playwright or novelist.

eeds’ White Cloth Gallery – a brand new photography and film gallery and the first of its kind in the North of England – opened in Leeds last month with the unveiling of a hard-hitting exhibition which delves in to the lives of London’s gangsters. Running for seven weeks, ‘The Family’ is the first work to exhibit at the White Cloth Gallery and features pictures from the acclaimed photographer Jocelyn Bain Hogg’s book of the same name. This unique exhibition is a follow-up to his hugely successful and controversial 2002 book ‘The Firm’, which documented a thriving London underground dominated by the players who made their names in the 60s and 70s: Freddie Foreman, Tony Lambrianou, Reggie Kray and Joey Pyle among them. There will be a Jocelyn Bain Hogg book signing for the exhibition on May 26th so save the date. For more information visit www.whiteclothgallery.com
